Excellent tour. The cave was well worth seeing, as was the underground lake. Would've liked more time in Argostoli .. 25 minutes was nowhere near long enough but this was due to a particular group of customers over running by 10 mins at each stop .. sue was an excellent and very informative guide ..

it was a nice tour, but honestly way too long ... it took us 4 hours to go, and 4 to come back ... bus, bus, boat, bus, and viceversa ... it was really exhausting! we left our hotel at 7 in the morning, and where back at 22h ... it was a nice tour, but noth worth all those rides : - but really well organised though .

This was a fantastic day trip and I only have good things to say about it. First of all the tour guide Sue was brilliant. She was such a lovely person and she was so knowledgeable about Kefalonia, the Ionian islands, Greek mythology, Greek history, economy and politics! She went out of her way to help anyone who needed assistance on the trip and spoke amazing Greek! She was a really interesting person, one you're just so glad you met and that you'll remember for a long time. It was a long day but it was broken up by two trips which you paid an extra 10euro for. The first was to the Drogarati caves and the second a boat trip on the Melissani underground lake. These were two things I never would have seen if we didn't go on this trip. The Melissani lake was beautiful and the caves were stunning. The coach trip around Kefalonia was equally pleasant and interesting with Sue giving us facts, stories and history along the route. We stopped for photos in some gorgeous spots, visited an orthodox monastery and got to have a really nice lunch in a local taverna partway through the day. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone going to this area of Greece. We were both very hungover during the trip but managed to keep it together on the bouncy ferry and coach!

This tour is a great value especially considering the transportation you'd need on your own for both islands, and Kefalonia is beautiful. We got to see a number of places, including the caves and underground lake, while also having a relaxing lunch. All of the door to door transportation was comfortable, and Sue was a great guide. I wish we had an opportunity to swim at one of the beautiful beaches, but I think that is likely an issue with all day trip tours since there is only so much time. The only negative is that if you are staying on the southeast of the island, you are may be picked up first over two hours before ferry departure from Agios Nikolaos in the north and then in the evening, be dropped off last. Makes for a long day, but at least the drive across Zakynthos is scenic!

This tour was awesome. Sue, our guide is so professional and brilliant. She provided us with all the necessary informations regarding the isalnd of Kefalonia with it's landmarks.

Amazing experience! Everything was very well organized (pick up and drop off from / to hotel, coach and ferry transportation). Our guide, Sue, was super friendly, fun and knowledgeable. Our bus driver was great too! I highly recommend taking the option to see the underground lake, it's fantastic.

This Underrated Greek Island Has an Adorable Town, Incredible Food, and a Famous Shipwreck Beach — How to Visit

Here’s the ultimate guide to Zakynthos, the Ionian wonder famed for its picture-perfect Shipwreck Beach.

day trip to zakynthos from kefalonia

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, areas to visit, how to get around.

Instantly recognizable by its astounding luminous turquoise seas enclosed within soaring craggy bluffs, Greece’s Insta-famous Shipwreck Beach is Zakynthos’ claim to global fame. An unwavering favorite among Travel + Leisure readers, the beach, known in Greece as Navagio, frequently tops best beach lists .

Situated off the Mediterranean country’s western mainland, Zakynthos is a member of the Ionian island group, a dreamy blend of blues and greens. The seas that wash Zakynthos and its neighbors range in hue from pale aqua to teal, while the landscapes are cloaked in olive trees, numbering an estimated two million, along with pine trees, citrus orchards, and rare flowers like sea daffodils. Bougainvillea and jasmine bring vivid color and aroma to the isle which its former Venetian rulers named Fior di Levante (the flower of the East).

While Zakynthos has long been known, particularly among young British holidaymakers, as a wild party isle, many locals have worked hard over the years to shrug off this reputation. Most bars that give the island this name are limited to the southern beach town of Laganas. So, you may want to avoid this part of the island altogether.

Most visitors to Zakynthos are drawn to its diverse beaches — some sandy, others lined in fine pebbles or rocky, and caves ideal for snorkeling. The island is unique because it hosts the most important nesting ground for the endangered Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). In fact, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established in 1999 to safeguard this delicate habitat, particularly on beaches in the south, as well as other wildlife, including the Mediterranean monk seal. Rubys Sakis Kandilas, CEO of Explore Zakynthos and a licensed tour guide, told T+L that environmental organization volunteers work diligently to raise awareness among locals and visitors of the need to safeguard turtle nest locations.

Beyond its natural attractions, Zakynthos is evolving into an enticing culinary destination, according to Sophia Kladis, manager of Windmill Bay Hotel . From traditional family-owned tavernas sourcing organic produce from their own farm to upscale seaside restaurants reinventing recipes with deep-seated Venetian roots, there is plenty to keep foodies curious.

Rounding out the experience, Zakynthians make for the utmost hosts, going out of their way to ensure you savor every minute on this wondrous isle.

Longing to lounge on Zakynthos' fine beaches? Here’s how to plan an unforgettable vacation on the island.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Capture the surreal beauty of Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach — known worldwide as one of the most beautiful in the country.
  • Swim in the Blue Caves and remote coves via a skippered charter or self-drive around the island.
  • Explore Zakynthos town.
  • Take a boat tour to the north or south to spot sea turtles and see coves only accessible via water.
  • Dine at an electricity-free taverna on Dafni Beach, where family-run restaurants serve fresh local food.

Olea All-Suite Hotel

A fluid free-form pool connects the 93 rooms at the minimalist, adult-focused, five-star Olea All-Suite Hotel , ensconced amid silvery olive and carob trees on a hillside in Tsilivi facing the Ionian. Organic materials such as bamboo, rattan, and oak grace the soothing indoor-outdoor living spaces that merge effortlessly. Set aside plenty of time for spa treatments featuring Babor products.

Lesante Cape

Situated in Akrotiri, this upscale seafront resort echoes classic Zakynthian architecture in the form of stone-built arches framed with white bands and terracotta-tiled rooftops. Suited to families and couples alike, Lesante Cape features 55 rooms and 10 villas dressed in neutral hues, infinity pools, five restaurants sourcing ingredients from an organic garden, a spa, and even a cultural museum showcasing the island’s heritage.

Domes Aulūs Zante

This all-inclusive five-star hotel, equally accommodating of families and couples, sits at the edge of a pine forest that opens to a sandy beachfront. Conscious of its location in Kalamaki, at a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles, guests of Domes Aulūs Zante are encouraged to contribute to local sustainability initiatives.

See Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach

You’ll never forget the first time you saw Shipwreck Beach, known as Navagio in Greek. A rusty shipwreck, now split in half, lies half-submerged in bright white sand surrounded by vertical cliffs and washed by luminous cyan seas. The views are equally awe-inspiring, whether you peer down from the top, stay within the confines of a safety platform, or take in the views from the sea. While landslides in recent years have closed off the beach to visitors, you can reach the bay by boat and swim offshore at a safe distance.

Reach Secret Beaches by Boat

Boat tours ply the northern and southern coasts and offer the opportunity to swim and snorkel in translucent waters. Those headed north pause at Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves and stop at secluded coves accessible only by sea. Those heading south visit Marathonisi (Turtle Island) in Laganas Bay, picturesque Cameo Island, and the Keri Caves. Those lucky enough may catch a glimpse of a sea turtle. Kladis recommends choosing one itinerary or spreading it over two days rather than a full-day island circumnavigation, which can be tiring. Alternatively, rent a self-drive boat or hire a skippered motorboat .

Visit the Turtle Rescue Center

At Zakynthos’ southeastern tip, you’ll find Gerakas Beach, one of the island’s most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta ). There, you can visit the Zante Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center , open May to October free of charge, and learn more about the endangered mammal and how to reduce your impact on their life cycle and habitat. Most importantly, you’ll find out what you should do if you see a turtle in the sea or hatchlings leaving their nest.

Courtesy of Nobelos

In Agios Nikolaos, on the northeast coast, yachties drop anchor at family-owned Nobelos , at the edge of a pine forest. Spend a day lounging on sunbeds on a petite, sandy beach, then relish stellar sea-to-fork fish, seafood, and firmly traditional Greek fare in stylish yet welcoming surroundings. Produce is sourced from the owners’ organic farm, and fish are transported via wooden caique. Bookings are recommended.

Located beside Solomos Square in Zakynthos Town, Prosilio is the island’s definitive fine dining destination. Talented young chef Kristy Karageorgou crafts whimsical dishes with distinctive Zakynthian ingredients that look almost too good to eat. Try the cuttlefish ravioli stuffed with sauteed greens (tsigareli), langoustine, and kourkoutzelia, an edible violet wildflower, or the signature pork ragu with local tavla cheese foam.

Ampelostrates

In the south, head inland to Ampelostrates in Kiliomenos village for wholesome Zakynthian dishes in an atmospheric stone-built farmhouse-turned-mezedopolio amid grape vines, lemon trees, and wandering chickens. “It’s traditional but quirky. The type of place where the owner will serve a wine they produced this year,” said Kladis. “They make pies with wild greens and kouneli ladorigano (rabbit with olive oil and oregano), one of their special dishes.”

On Dafni Beach, which falls within marine park boundaries, family-run old-school tavernas like Porto Mela are run on generators as electricity isn’t permitted. Kandilas recommends the in-house bread baked in a wood-fired oven and served with olive oil from the owner’s grove, tomato, and garlic. Stifado, a hearty rabbit stew made with onions, and ladotiri, a slightly spicy native cheese made with sheep and goat milk and matured in local olive oil, is a must-try, he added.

Right on the port in Zakynthos Town, Varkarola is not simply a taverna beloved of locals and visitors alike but “one of the last remaining families keeping Zakynthos’ Venetian kantada (serenade) tradition alive,” Kandilas said. Immerse yourself in the heartfelt song, accompanied by mandolin and acoustic guitar, as you dine on house specials, veal sofrito, and slow-roasted beer-marinated pork shank.

Maremagnum/Getty Images

Zakynthos’ warm-weather season runs from April to October, with July and August proving the busiest and hottest months of the year. In August, boat trips, restaurants, and even sun loungers on the beach need to be booked ahead, Kladis said. Toward the end of the month, a feast day celebrating the island’s patron saint can cause traffic jams on the roads leading into Zakynthos Town. Kladis recommended visiting in early June or in September. “It’s not over-crowded, it’s still warm, and there are just enough people to bring the island to life,” said Kladis. “You can see and experience everything you’d like to without having to book a week in advance.”

The quickest way to reach Zakynthos is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to the island take about 60 minutes and operate daily. From the mainland, ferries depart from Kyllini port in the northwestern Peloponnese four times a day in summer and take one hour and 15 minutes. Zakynthos features on cruise line itineraries, including those of Atlas Ocean Voyages, Norwegian, and Azamara.

Anton Petrus/Getty Images

Zakynthos Town

Spend a day in the capital, Zakynthos Town. “Start at Zakynthos port, where you can see yachts in the harbor,” Kandilas said. Marvel at the grandeur of Agios Dionysios Church and its bell tower. Dedicated to the island’s patron saint, its Catholic architectural style contrasts with the Orthodox domed style. “Then head to Solomos Square to view the statue of poet Dionysios Solomos, who composed Greece’s national anthem. On Agios Markos Square, visit the museum dedicated to him and other eminent Zakynthians,” Kandilas said. Pore over portraits, photographs, and period furniture. Also, head to the Venetian castle ruins atop Bohali Hill for panoramic sea views.

Northern Zakynthos

Kladis recommended venturing to the island’s north by car or boat. “There are some villas and houses and a few traditional preserved buildings, but, mostly, it’s very natural,” she said. “The beaches are rockier than in the south, and the waters are deep and blue. It’s just so calming and picturesque.”

Southern Zakynthos

Heading south, you’ll encounter warmer seas and sandy beaches that shelve gradually, making them more kid-friendly. Vassilikos is home to some of the island’s best beaches, according to Kandilas. Sweeping Laganas Bay, a popular swim spot, forms part of the strictly-regulated National Marine Park of Zakynthos . This protected area is home to over 300 fauna species, including loggerhead sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals, and more than 170 types of marine flora.

Heading inland from the southeastern seaside resort of Argassi, an essential lookout during Venetian rule, you’ll find one of Zakynthos’ two domed churches. Stroll around the ruins of the 15th-century stone-built Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery built on an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Artemis and take in Ionian views from atop Skopos mountain. Closer to the town is the 16th-century Domeneghini Tower , which is closely associated with Greece’s 1821 War of Independence.

By Rental Car: Book a rental car in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “It’s safest to travel by car. In summer, it’s hot, and distances are long, so you want to be comfortable,” said Kandilas.

By Taxi: Between May and October, silver taxis operate 24 hours a day on the island. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Zakynthos Town, and the port and in popular resort areas on the eastern and southern coasts. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. There are fixed fares for numerous routes. It costs around 15 euros to reach Zakynthos Town from the airport.

The Best, Most Unmissable Beaches

day trip to zakynthos from kefalonia

Kefalonia is a land of countless amazing beaches, all distinct and captivating. It would take around a week of exploration to visit all of the island’s beaches. Whether you’re a fan of milky blue seas or calm crystal-clear waters, Kefalonia is the place to be.

Best Beaches in Kefalonia and Zakynthos / Xi Beach

Located on the southwestern side of the island just after Lixouri, Xi is Kefalonia’s most distinctive beach. Easily accessible, with crystal clear shallow waters, it also has water sports facilities, numerous beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas. What makes it stand out is its dark brown-red sand, attributed to its clay composition. Take the opportunity to enjoy a natural spa experience – smear your whole body with clay, let it dry for 10 minutes and then plunge into the sea. Clay helps to detoxify and tighten the skin and here you’ll have an entire beach full of clay sand at your disposal.

Antisamos beach

Located on the western side of Kefalonia, near Sami, facing Ithaca, Antisamos is renowned for waters that change color, from ultramarine-blue to cyan-green. Located in a closed bay andsurrounded by a lush green landscape, the beach has coarse pebbles, thus it’s probably a good idea to bring your beach shoes.

Best Beaches in Kefalonia and Zakynthos / Fteri

Pericles Merakos

Located in Paliki’s northern coast, Fteri is framed by lush hills and distinguished by its pebbly shores, limestone cliffs, sea caves, and vivid blue waters. Accessible via boat from Zola Harbor or via a 45-minute hike, this is officially a stunningly beautiful place. For essentials, pack sturdy footwear, water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen.

Emblisi beach / Shutterstock

In a beautiful, closed bay on the northeastern side of Kefalonia, near Fiskardo, Emplisi beach is made up of stark white pebbles, while the bottom of the sea is sandy. The large smooth slab-like rocks on the left side of the beach are ideal for sunbathing on. Meanwhile, the beach has a fascinating seabed that’s ideal for snorkeling. There are no umbrellas and sunbeds, but there is a canteen where you can get the essentials.

Myrtos from above / Shutterstock

Myrtos, the postcard-perfect beach with azure waters and white sand is the island’s number one attraction. Surrounded by dramatic towering cliffs, this world-famous beach has been ranked among the best globally. It is located in the northern part of Kefalonia, three kilometers after the village of Divarata. As you head down to the beach, admire the magical beauty of the coast from above and take lots of pictures. Unfortunately, the beach offers no natural shade, but a part of it is serviced with sunbeds and umbrellas.

Petani beach / Shutterstock

The name comes from the Homeric word “epipetanoi”, which means an area that’s rich in water all year round. White pebbles, limestone walls, crystal clear waters and a lush green landscape all combine to create a work of art. The springs that flow from the mountain, pour into the sea and the water currents dye the waters in all shades of blue. Legend has it that in ancient times, fairies washed their clothes in the springs while enjoying the view.

Makris Gialos

Makris Gialos beach / Shutterstock

Lengthy and cosmopolitan, Makris Gialos is the beach closest to Argostoli. Along its golden sandy shore you will find beach bars renting umbrellas and sunbeds, some of which may require reservations, especially in August. There are also water sports facilities.

Dafnoudi beach

Close to the chic, lively town of Fiskardo on Kefalonia’s northern coast, this beach has large pebbles, dense greenery, and clear emerald waters. Access is via a short, easy trek from a parking area near Antipata village. Remember to bring all essentials for the day, such as water, shade, and snorkeling gear.

On the beaches of Zakynthos, the protected Caretta Caretta sea turtle buries her eggs until they hatch and the baby turtles set off on their dangerous journey to the sea. Access is allowed until sunset, and anyone lucky enough to observe the baby turtles as they race into the water before darkness falls, is sure to enjoy a remarkable sight.

Consider exploring the beautiful beaches of Zakynthos by renting a car. With many of the best beaches located outside of town, having your own transportation is essential for a convenient and enjoyable beach day.

Marathonisi

Marathonisi

A small, private, uninhabited island located very close to Keri beach, Marathonisi is accessible by boat, but anchor throwing is prohibited as it is part of the protected marine park. One beach on the island is pebbly, while the other is a large sandy strip that slopes into the sea. Both are beautiful.

Daphne is a small and secluded beach located in the western part of Zakynthos. It has crystal-clear waters and fine sand and is surrounded by a dense pine forest. Daphne is an ideal choice for those wishing to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful swim.

Porto Zoro beach / Pericles Merakos

Porto Zoro is a quiet, sandy beach known for the large rocks in the water that create a special scenery. There are sun loungers and umbrellas available, and access is easy with a parking space nearby.

Agios Nikolaos

Gerakas beach / Shutterstock

In the picturesque Vassilikos region of the island, Agios Nikolaos has breathtaking scenery, with crystal-clear waters and sandy shores. Its name is derived from the charming chapel at the edge of the beach. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports, sun loungers, and beach bars.

Pelagaki beach / Pericles Merakos

Gerakas is one of the island’s most beautiful and organized beaches, located in the southeastern part of Zakynthos near the village of Vassilikos. It is a protected area within the Zakynthos National Marine Park, known for its golden, fine sand and warm waters. The Caretta Caretta turtle visits the beach to lay its eggs, and access is restricted after sunset. The use of umbrellas is only allowed in certain areas in order to protect the turtle eggs.

Pelagaki is located on the northeastern side of Zakynthos, in a coastal area belonging to the territory of the mountainous village of Koroni, situated inland at an altitude of 161 meters. It lies between two low hills, and there is no road leading directly to it, which means a little walking is required to get there. Its shoreline is covered in fine pebbles, and there are low-height rocky ends ideal for diving off or snorkeling around.

Porto Koula

Near the charming village of Agios Sostis in Laganas bay, Porto Koula is a green oasis that retains its traditional character. Olive tree-lined paths lead visitors to the sandy beach, where they can relax on sun loungers and under umbrellas. There is also a beach bar and traditional tavernas serving delicious local cuisine. In addition, some tourist shops offer souvenirs and other goods.

Navagio beach / Marketing Greece

Navagio Beach, which stands for ‘shipwreck’ in Greek, is a strong contender for Greece’s most Instagrammable spot and deserves an honorary mention. Unfortunately, since 2022, this stunning location has been inaccessible to both locals and visitors due to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that caused large rocks from the surrounding cliffs to tumble into the bay. Previously, Navagio Beach was only reachable by boat, adding to its allure. With its mesmerizing waters, soft golden sand, and dramatic cliffs, it’s easy to see why Navagio Beach became the iconic symbol of Zakynthos. This unique setting creates a breathtaking backdrop that captivates all who lay eyes on it.

Trying to decide where to stay in the northern part of the island after a few days in Argostoli in order be to be closer to the places of interest in this part of Kefalonia as would like to avoid long drives daily.

From info online it seems Assos and Fiskardo are very picturesque. Any other options of picturesque towns or villages that would be a suitable base for this part of the island ?

Can you also share what are the differences between Assos and Fiskardo (apart from size) and what would you say are the advantages/disadvantages of each ?

Appreciate your input.

Fiscardo is a place I have visited a few times and love it. It's a beautiful village, I think the only one that survived the earthquake in the 50's. It is really just like your description. It has a small but pretty town shingle beach, lovely tavernas, cafes and bars all along the harbour and gorgeous views over to Ithaca. It is very picturesque. There are also some lovely beaches just outside Fiscardo. It can be a little more expensive but there are some very decent tavernas with good prices. The caveat is that I have only stayed in the village in May and September, the last time being September 2022. July will be much busier and of course hotter.

Just to add that these are the only real tourist villages in the North but Agia Efimia, which is more central and a great base for touring the island is another very picturesque village that may appeal to you

day trip to zakynthos from kefalonia

Agia Efimia always

You don't have to stay in Fiscardo, places on the edge are quite popular with the independent traveller.

Places like Magganos and Antipata are nice and fairly relaxed but it's easy to pop in and out of Fiscardo when you want.

Maybe a bit further away, but Zola just on the edge of the Paliki peninsular has a nice village feel to it, but you are a bit of a distance from everything else and on a pretty steep hill.

We love heading all over the Island and dip in and out of all resorts just like when we're in Fuerteventura we find exploring as much as possible in the earlier hours heading for lunch then returning home 4ish to chill by the sea or pool befroe a local taverna for dinner, So far we've stayed in Peratata & Svoronata & in two weeks time Trapezaki & cant wait! Goudy I will visit those place you mentioned thanks

Fiscardo is nice but too far north and still the tavernas are a bit more expensive than others towns and villages.

Agia Efimia is more central. It does get crowded some lunchtimes when folks on coach tours descend on the village centre. As Goudy has pointed out Fiscardo and many other coastal resorts have villages nearby where there are cottages and villas to rent. A short drive from Agia Efimia are the villages of Dendrinata, Makriotika and Divarata.

The beaches around the village of Agia Efimia are however small pebbly unserviced coves.

Sami, a bit further south also has several nearby villages including Poulata, Tzanetata and of course Karavomilos which is a coastal village only a 20 minute walk along the beach to Sami. Sami is also the base for the ferries to the nearby island of Ithaca.

Just a few ideas.

  • Boulevard boats 3:42 am

Kos is one of those rare places that’s naturally romantic. It is ideal for couples looking to take some time out together and reconnect in a stunningly romantic setting.

With its hidden coves, blue waters, and relaxed atmosphere, Corfu is considered one of the best Greek Islands for couples.

One of the most romantic activities is taking a stroll down Corfu Canal d’Amour (Lover’s Canal). This pathway leads to a beautiful beach with crystal-clear waters. You’ll notice previous visitors have added locks to the chain-link fence alongside it. Why not do something romantic and add your own?

For an extra-special romantic experience, book yourself and your special someone on a private boat tour . This way, you can avoid crowds and get to enjoy the calm, blue waters of Corfu in complete privacy. You can take a picnic and relax as you sail through this beautiful part of the world!

Rhodes is one of the most romantic destinations for couples in Greece – and with good reason! Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot to escape from it all, or a bustling city where you can explore together, Rhodes has it all.

This is also one of the best Greek Islands for couples in September thanks to the warm weather and fewer crowds!

The old town of Rhodes is a must-visit, with its cobbled streets and stunning architecture. Stroll hand-in-hand through its quaint back alleys and take in the atmosphere – you won’t be disappointed.

Butterfly Valley is highly recommended by locals so try and take a day trip here too!

And if you like history, the Acropolis of Lindos is an absolute gem that is perfect for couples. This stunning ancient Greek citadel will take your breath away. And the surrounding area is perfect for couples looking for a relaxed place to stay.

If you’re looking for a truly romantic getaway, then look no further than Crete! This Greek island has it all – from rustic tavernas with delicious local cuisine to beautiful blue waters ideal for swimming and exploring. Plus, the dramatic gorges serve as a picturesque backdrop for any romantic escapade.

One of the most popular places to visit for couples is Elafonissi Beach, also known as the “Pink Beach”. The unique pink sand makes it a truly spectacular site. The best thing to do here is to book a private boat tour and go snorkeling .

Another great spot to check out while in Crete is Agios Nicholas. This small village offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea, and its quaint streets become even more romantic at night when they are illuminated with string lights.
