We were very warmly welcomed by the staff who took great care of us during the entire trip. They even made special food for us as per our taste. The rooms are very clean well equipped with all modern amenities. The boat has a top sun deck where we enjoyed a lazy afternoon. The sightseeing was smooth and well organised. The egyptologist was quite knowledgeable and told us some really interesting stories. My room was gigantic and everything was clean and fresh. It has everything you need, pool, spa and a gym. The excursions were lead by a guide who sounded like he experienced the actual history. Everything was well planned. Customer service was second to none. Staff is incredible; attentive to your every need and always up for friendly chat. It doesn’t matter if you have any kind of food allergies or that they have a meal plan already in place. The chefs are so talented, that they can whip up anything for you want at a moments notice. It doesn’t matter if you are vegetarian, vegan, or need gluten-free, they will cook whatever you order. I suggest letting them just make up their own because the chef will make some of the most amazing food to the most delicious Egyptian and Indian dishes. I do wish they would’ve given us an evening at the night market in Luxor. It’s nice that you don’t have to tip every time you eat as you tip at the end of the cruise. We were told suggested tip to be between $25-$30 per guest per day. Since this is what we were told by the staff, this is what we paid. Make sure you bring money with you because tipping the people that carry your luggage, the excursion, driver, and your guide to be paid in cash and separate. I would have liked to have added a day of exclusion at the night market in Luxor. Cruise staff, especially Hussian and Nasser taking such good care of me. Unfortunately, I cannot remember everyone’s name of the people that made breakfast lunch and dinner so enjoyable. My only complaint is that excursion leaders always take you to their friends’s shops which is pretty much with every excursion in Egypt. I can’t wait to take another Oberoy cruise. We were on the Movenpick Sunray from Aswan to Luxor. We were told it was a new ship, but it was quite dated and we all agreed they put WAY too much furniture in the rooms (in my room with a queen size bed, they could have eliminated the dresser, a chair, and one of the two small tables). They also need better charging areas in the rooms. The service was great, the food was very good. I had my laundry done and they did a great job. The gift shop was not interesting, but most gift shops were not very good in Egypt. Hotel Marsam has the BEST gift shop of local artisans. Read more Written November 16, 2023
  • AmyW868 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply the best Simply the best. From the staff, accommodations, food and guides to the sites everything was first class. You will notice the difference when you have the sites to yourself or very limited people at them as they do that on purpose so you have the best time exploring around. The tours are limited to only 6 people or less ensuring a private experience. Do yourself a favor and book the suite D05 with the private jacuzzi on the back of the ship, worth every penny. This is the only cruise I would recommend to my friends and family. Read more Written October 22, 2023

  • AmateurAnthroplogist 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Spectacular luxury experience from start to finish We just finished a 6 day Nile cruise aboard the Oberoi Philae. Our high expectations were exceeded in every regard. The recently refurbished boat is lovely and luxurious. Spacious cabins with beautiful bathrooms, fantastic quality king beds with high quality sheets and towels refreshed twice daily by attentive housekeeping staff. Meals are all a la carte and the quality and variety of the menu was outstanding. With only 22 cabins aboard the staff quickly learn your preferences and driver excellent service. Of course the daily tours of the magnificent sites and antiquities are outstanding. Maximum group size is 8 guests per Egyptologist (our group had 4). The Egyptologists were outstanding and accompanied us throughout the week. Each transfer was in a comfortable luxury van with plenty of chilled water. We have travelled extensively and had the opportunity to experience numerous luxury brands. This is truly a world class experience. Highly recommend! Read more Written September 19, 2023
  • Varun_723 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Memories to last a lifetime Going to see the Pyramids is on many a bucket list, but I found the true highlight of my two week holiday in Egypt to be my cruise down the Nile aboard the Oberoi Philae. This incredible river cruiser is built to house approximately 40 to 50 people, considerably less than most other boats of the same size, but travelling during the off-season means there's far fewer guests aboard. When my wife and I checked in, we found that not only had we been upgraded but we were also only 2 of 4 guests aboard, and essentially had the boat to ourselves like a private cruise. Despite this small number, the boat ran with a full roster of staff, determined to make our experience memorable. With the small number of guests onboard, we began to get to know some of the incredible staff, all of whom share the same exceptional passion for their jobs. Emad, Nasser, Rahman, Alaa, Ellia, Farida, and many others turned what we expected to be good to great. From every meal, every interaction, every jaw dropping towel creation during turn down service, every booking at the spa, and every chat about football (which always ended in laughter), the memories the crew have left us with will stay with us forever. Additionally, as my wife and I were also celebrating her birthday, the kitchen went out of their way to bake a custom cake to mark the occasion. But travelling down the Nile and stopping at various sights also meant we needed a guide, and the person assigned to us made us fall in love with Egypt and history in general. Tarek's knowledge and enthusiasm has now set the bar so high that I'm afraid no guide may ever be able to match it. Sightseeing with him felt like retracing the steps of the people from 1000s of years ago, an interactive experience like none other and truly the history teacher I wish I had in school. If you want to be absolutely blown away, make sure you ask for Tarek Ibrahim as your guide and you will not regret it. To sum up this rather long review, I'll simply say that you can't possibly go wrong with this team. They're all collectively pulling in the same direction and that's set a new standard of excellence for hospitality and made us feel like we were travelling with friends. If given the opportunity, I'd love to take the cruise again, if only to experience the amazing service once more. Read more Written August 20, 2023
  • 770malvikam 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth every penny My husband and I stayed with the Oberoi Philae for our 4-night journey from Luxor to Aswan, and we couldn’t have made a better choice. The rooms are modern and spacious, and compared to most of the large cruise liners, the Philae has a relatively smaller capacity of just around 22 rooms. The staff was extremely welcoming and made us feel truly at home during our time onboard. By the end of our stay, we knew many of them by name, and looked forward to chatting with them during meals (where there was a different menu every time!) or in the hallways. The spa is also a must-visit after a long day walking around Egypt’s ancient wonders. The itinerary is perfectly balanced so you can enjoy the historic sights, while leaving enough downtime to unwind on the boat. We wanted to add a couple of additional tours to our schedule, and they organized everything seamlessly. Finally, I have to give a special shout-out to our Egyptologist guide, Tarek, who took the entire experience from great to unforgettable. His passion and knowledge for his country’s history was infectious, and we learnt more than we could have ever imagined from him. Truly one of the best tour guides we have encountered on any of our travels. If you have the chance, definitely ask for him as your guide. Overall, I can’t recommend this cruiser enough. And if you can bear the heat, I’d highly recommend going in the off season. We visited in August and were 2 of only 4 passengers onboard! Read more Written August 20, 2023

  • Sheila C 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Tour Guide Ever My family and I spent 9 days in Egypt and the last 4 days were spent aboard Sonesta Moon Goddess Nile River Cruise. The ship was great, I have cruised other river cruises (Avalon, Viking and American) and this experience was unique and specific to Egypt (the entertainment, the food and the shopping). The ladies (4 of them) enjoyed the massages (they are still talking about them) and the cabins were very nice, spacious and clean. The highlight of our trip was our tour guide Khaled Fouad. He was very knowledgeable about his country and shared his enthusiasm for all of the Egyptian sites with us. He creatively included our group into the historical events we saw each day by incorporating us as characters in history. This really helped to keep us engaged, especially the teenagers. He expertly guided us past all of the “street vendors” and made us feel safe when the onslaughts occurred by sending them away. We toured in June, so it was HOT and he made sure we were OK and not overheated. He adapted his tour to keep us in the shade and air conditioning when he could. We learned a lot from Khaled at each stop on the tour and I shared it daily in my social media travel logs, which has created an interest in people who follow me to come to Egypt. My experience in Egypt has changed my life and I plan to return. Thank you Sonesta and Khaled for making our Egyptian experience so memorable. Read more Written June 27, 2023
  • xiaocai 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Superb experience, but certain parts of the ship already show signs of age As part of our 12 day trip through Egypt, we spent 4 nights on the Philae travelling up the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. Cruising the Nile is really magical and should be on everyone’s bucket list. We experienced so many unforgettable moments during the cruise, be it lazy lunch on deck while sailing, sipping on a cocktail during sunset watching the river, and all the great sightseeing included. I don’t believe there is a more comfortable way to cruise on the Nile than onboard the Oberoi Philae. With its very generous size considering its only twenty something cabins, it never felt crowded or was there any wait for anything. It felt very exclusive and we were oftentimes the only people on the sundeck, in the lounge or in the gym. The facilities are excellent and also include a full-sized Spa with large treatment rooms with very moderately priced treatments and super professional SPA staff from their Bali property. The overall design is very understated and not as “colonial” (or tacky) as on other Nile cruisers. Our cabin (standard “Deluxe Cabin”) was extremely spacious, with twin beds and a separate seating area, large dressing area and HUGE bathroom. The size of the standard cabins was also the reason we picked the Philae over the Zahra. Every day, the house keepers would create some towel animals and caused a lot of fun and surprise. Housekeeping was immaculate and otherwise invisible. As regards sightseeing and activities, the Oberoi team gets in touch with you long before the departure and checks what you want to include on the itinerary and makes sure they customise the itinerary for you. Most sightseeing is included in the rate, but there are certain sights not covered. We did the Philae temple at night and made a day trip to Abu Simbel on top of the regular itinerary, both highly recommended and very well-organized by Oberoi. There is also hot air ballooning and many other activities you can pick from (all for a charge). Since we were the only German speaking guests on board, we got a Egyptologist guide to ourselves and our private van just for the 2 of us (although not a Mercedes Benz van any longer, but Hyundai or Toyota). But normally, they would put a small group of max 6 people together. Our guide and driver were excellent and have repeatedly worked with Oberoi. One advice: Since not all sights are covered, we would encourage everyone to extend your stay in Aswan and Luxor prior/after the cruise. We did 3 nights at the Sofitel Winter Palace and 2 nights at the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract before the cruise which was enough time to cover the most important sights (there is just so much to see in Egypt!!!). Temples of Dendara and Abydos are amazing!!! So is the temple of Khnum in Esna with its gorgeous columns. The stretch of Nile between Assuan and Luxor is not very long, therefore, we opted for the shorter cruise (as opposed to the 6 night itinerary which includes more sights) in order to be able to experience these legendary historic hotels. Although we enjoyed very much the journey, mostly thanks to the incredible team and food, the ship unfortunately already shows its age and could use a retouch: We saw many chipped tiles in the swimming pool and also in the bathroom and a couple of mouldy corners (for which we have deducted a point)… This did not impair our experience overall, but paying USD 1,600 per night (yes, per night, not per cruise!), you don’t want/expect to see something like this. Further, while we understand that they are striving for the “clean” look, I do think that Oberoi could make the ship a bit less “cold” and a bit more “cozy”: e.g. the sun beds are just grey sun beds without any toppers on them. This really does not look nor feel very comfy: As we passed by a couple of Sanctuary Boats, while we understand that these are less “exclusive”, we could not help but think that their sundecks looked much more inviting as the sun beds and chairs all had thick, striped toppers and cushions and they placed some plants and lanterns here and there. To end on a positive note: The entire team onboard was outstanding! Very attentive, welcoming and chatty, but at the same time keeping the right level of distance. Kudos to Oberoi who always manages to train the staff to a level which is rarely met by any other hotel company! We will never forget this cruise. It is a trip of a lifetime! • mcullen22 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles room without a view We cruised through a tour company. It was really a mixed bag. First off, Egypt was amazing. The sights are truly breathtaking. The people are nice and we felt safe throughout the trip. Positives: The room was very nice and very roomy for a ship. The staff was overall very helpful and pleasant. Could be better: The food was very average. Mostly buffets. probably a step above a Norwegian or royal Caribbean cruise line. The spa staff were like hawks circling prey. They waited outside and pounced when you walked by. They also changed prices when pushed. Really disappointing: They do not tell you that the ships dock side by side so 3 out of 4 nights/days our patio faced another ship. Literally the other ship was 5 feet away! We could shake hands with the people on the other boat. as a result, we had to keep the shades drawn and we had absolutely no view! It was terrible! Read more Written January 24, 2023

oberoi egypt nile cruise

Luca Moretti

Oberoi Zahra is where great food meets the Nile. Each meal was a culinary adventure, a carefully chosen mix of tastes that went together perfectly. The places on board were even better than I thought, making this cruise a real treat for the senses.

Sofia Costa

The best way to see the Nile is on an Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise. The ship is very fancy, the food and the staff are great. I loved the daily trips to see old Egyptian tombs and temples, and the Egyptologist on board knew a lot about the subject. I highly recommend the Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise to anyone who wants a trip they will never forget.

Rafael Garcia

My wife and I booked the Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise, the best choice we’ve ever made. The cruise was even better than we had hoped. The food was wonderful, the staff was friendly, and the ship was beautiful. The daily trips to old Egyptian temples and tombs were our favorite parts. The Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise is the most luxurious way to see the sights of ancient Egypt.

Miguel Torres

A trip beyond what was expected! The Oberoi Zahra Nile Cruise is like a paradise on the water. The suites are luxurious, the perfect service and the culture tours are mind-blowing. It is a must-see for anyone traveling in search of wealth and history.

oberoi egypt nile cruise

Many thanks for great information!

oberoi egypt nile cruise

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

The 10 best Nile cruises for 2024

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Egypt’s is one of the greatest stories ever told, and untold. It’s more than a century since British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb; yet Egypt’s narrative continues to unfold.

The latest find was in January this year at Saqqara, near Cairo, where archaeologists uncovered a rock tomb believed to be 4,500 years old. Located on the Nile’s west bank, Saqqara’s necropolis served as a royal burial ground for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Last year embalming workshops were found here and archaeologists have also unearthed a granite sarcophagus from the reign of King Ramses II (1279 to 1213 BC) along with hundreds of mummies encased in painted sarcophagi. Among the cache of goods being taken to the afterlife was an intact papyrus scroll.

There will be plenty of grave possessions on display at the Grand Egyptian Museum when it finally opens in its new location at Giza. Alongside 10,000 ancient artefacts the museum will hold King Tut’s entire tomb trove of 5,000 objects. The latest estimation for the opening is mid-2024 – with any luck some cruise passengers will be among the first to visit the museum complex this winter.

Cairo’s pyramids and museum treasures are a prelude for the main event, however. Strung along the Nile are temples, royal tombs, colossal statues, mausoleums, island monuments and ancient inscripted chambers that stop time. Against this historical backdrop, buffalo irrigate river-fed crop fields, children paddle from littoral beaches and single-sailed feluccas and calls to prayer from nearby muezzin catch the breeze.

There’s nowhere else quite like it. Here are some of the best ways to cruise the Nile this year. For further inspiration and advice read our complete guide to Nile cruises.

Best for a two-country trip

Best for: Old-school romance

Before the arrival of steam-powered boats, visitors would cruise the Nile on small, two-masted dahabiya, led by a “houseboat crew”. La Flaneuse du Nil recreates that slow-travel tradition with style – and hot water and flushing loos to boot. On its journey between Luxor and Aswan, the flat-bottomed boat visits small villages and islands and drops anchor in peaceful seclusion.

The seven cabins feature louvred shutters, wood panelling and tasteful antiques and there is a beautiful balcony suite at the stern. The recent addition of 48 solar panels means guests will be able to enjoy sailing without the thrum of a generator – just like the old days.

The details: From £5,997pp including flights, five nights on board, a night at the Winter Palace hotel in Luxor and three nights at the Old Cataract hotel in Aswan. Departs January 2025 (020 3582 4990; originaltravel.co.uk ).

Best for: The long cruise

For those keen to linger on the Nile, or for the returning visitor keen to fill in the gap between the pyramids and ancient Thebes, this 10-night sailing from Cairo to Luxor ticks both boxes. The real beauty of this cruise, however, is stepping ashore to world-class sites that are largely unvisited. Highlights include the tombs, catacombs and temple of Tuna el-Gebel; the sarcophagus of Akhenaten in Tel el-Amarna and the temples of Abydos, Denderah and el-Kab. The five-star Movenpick Darakum has 52 cabins spread over three decks, a small gym and a large sun deck with a plunge pool.

The details:  A 10-night Secret Nile cruise costs from £5,725pp including flights, transfers, excursions and international flights, departing on September 13, 2024 (020 3811 6790; vjv.com ).

Best for: A family cruise

There’s plenty of opportunity for cultural exchange on this holiday with Intrepid, and the variety and pace of the itinerary is ideal for those travelling with older children. After a couple of days in Cairo you’ll fly to Aswan and sail to Luxor via Edfu and the Esna lock. There is dinner with a Nubian family, a visit to the floating Temple of Philae and a lazy sunset sail by felucca. Back in Cairo there is time for coffee at El Fishawy, the city’s oldest coffee shop, and dinner “at home” with a Cairene family.

The details:  An eight-day Premium Egypt holiday costs from £2,219pp staying on board the Nile Style or La Fayan in April and May 2024. Includes four nights in Cairo and a hotel night in Luxor; excludes international flight. Children must be 15 or over (0808 2745 111; intrepidtravel.com ).

Best for: A cruise and beach combo

For winter-sun seekers the lure of Red Sea beaches can be as tempting as Egypt’s tombs and treasures. So why not dip a toe into both? Marsa Alam’s reefs are a favourite with scuba divers and the snorkelling is equally rewarding. Clouds of reef fish are abundant and you might see turtles, tuna, mackerel, dolphins, sharks and even the odd manatee. Discover Egypt combines a week here with a leisurely Nile cruise on the MS Tulip and there is an optional excursion from Aswan to Abu Simbel to see the four colossal statues of Ramses II (£92 by coach or £345 by air).

The details:  A two-week holiday including seven nights at the Hilton Nubian Village Marsa Alam and a week’s cruise costs from £3,015pp departing in October or November 2024. Includes return flight from Heathrow (to Luxor and back from Marsa Alam) and all other transfers (020 7407 2111;  discoveregypt.co.uk ).

Best for: Accessibility on the Nile

All hotel, cruise, transport and dining logistics are taken care of on this accessible holiday with Responsible Travel. For added peace of mind, guest-relations assistance is available throughout and transfers in an airconditioned vehicle are assisted. Following a three-night stay in Cairo, with visits to the pyramids, Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, passengers will board a five-star accessible ship in Luxor, for a sail to Aswan.

The itinerary includes visits to Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Sobek (the crocodile god) at Kom Ombo. At Aswan there is a sail around Elephantine Island by motorboat and a visit to the Unfinished Obelisk.

The details:  An eight-day Nile Cruise costs from £2,339pp in an accessible double room for departures in November and December 2024 (except Christmas and New Year). Includes all accommodation, sightseeing in Cairo with lunches, flights from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan to Cairo, private guided tours and a helper during visits to historical places. International flights cost extra (01273 823 700; responsibletravel.com ).

Best for: A side trip to Alex

Part land tour; part cruise, this trip includes a visit to the seaside city of Alexandria, founded in 331BC by Alexander the Great and once Cleopatra’s power base. Remnants of the royal palace and its sunken treasures lie in the city’s seafront bay. The must-see modern library, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, was built to commemorate what was the ancient world’s single greatest archive of literature. Its design features an inclined cylinder, part of which goes underground. The trip includes four nights in Cairo before flying to Luxor to join the ship, which sails south to Aswan.

The details:  A 12-day Cairo, Alexandria and The Nile cruise costs from £2,895pp, including four nights in Cairo, nine excursions, all flights, most meals and home-to-airport transfers. Departing on November 21, 2024 (0808 258 1538;  titantravel.co.uk ).

Best for: Exclusive access

By next year Viking will have six ships on the Nile. The newest on the river is the 41-cabin Viking Osiris, named by Lord Carnarvon, of Highclere Castle. The current earl’s great-grandfather was the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, benefactor and co-explorer of Howard Carter and this trip offers a pre- or post-cruise tour of the Earl’s private collection of photographs detailing the discovery and excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun.

A 12-night Pharaohs and Pyramids itinerary include visits to the pyramids and spice market in Cairo and the necropolis at Sakkara. Osiris then spends eight days on the Nile with excursions to the Queen Nefertari’s and Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings and visits to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena and the High Dam in Aswan.

The details:  A 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise costs from £6,945pp, including all flights, transfers, excursions, drinks with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi and tips. Departing on October 13, 2024 (0800 319 66 60; viking.com ).

Best for: Going your own way

If you prefer a bit more flexibility and are comfortable booking flights and hotels independently, the MS Esplanade sails on three-, four- and seven-night cruises between Luxor and Aswan, and charges a per-night cabin rate. The 73-cabin ship has a small spa, a stylish top deck with poolside cabanas and plush cabins with wide windows. All sailings take in the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor temples, Edfu, Kom Ombo, the Aswan High Dam, Philae Temple and a sunset felucca cruise.

Tack on a night or two in Cairo at the 13-room Villa Belle Epoque. Located in the tree-lined suburb of Maadi, the beautifully restored 1920s villa has a ground-floor conservatory overlooking a garden and poolside dining area, shaded by fig, guava mango and lemon trees.

The details:  Double cabins on the MS Esplanade ( mayfaircruises.com ) from $330pp or $300pp triple-share in October 2024. Doubles at Villa Belle Epoque from $240 per night ( villabelleepoque.com ). Flights to Cairo from around £500 return in early October ( egyptair.com ).

Best for: Suite dreams

For dreamy, in-cabin views of the Nile, book one of the four forward-facing suites on board AmaDahlia. With its gym, massage rooms, heated pool, 16 suites and marble-clad bathrooms, the 72-passenger ship doesn’t skimp on luxury. Soak up more river views from the pool where there is alfresco dining and Chef’s Table dinners.

Itinerary standouts include exclusive access to the Queen of Nefatari’s tomb at the Valley of the Kings and a private visit to the lavish Abdeen Palace in Cairo. The former royal palace contains five museums, a pharmacy of rare medicines, a former royal printing house and a collection of exquisite paintings.

The details:  The 11-night Secrets of Egypt and the Nile itinerary costs from £4,623pp departing 24 May 2024. Includes return flight between Cairo and Luxor, transfers and four hotel nights in Cairo. Return flights from London or Manchester cost £650pp. (0800 520 2250; amawaterways.co.uk ).

Best for: A two-country trip

Uniworld’s stylish river ship, SS Sphinx, features locally sourced fabrics, decorative hand-carved detail and Egyptian artwork. The wine list champions Egyptian wines and menu items include fatteh, mulukhiya (made from jute leaves) and hawawshi (pitta filled with ground beef). After a day’s touring guests can relax in chic, tented cabanas on the pool deck. Along with the usual showstoppers, the itinerary includes afternoon tea at Aswan’s fabled Old Cataract Hotel and an excursion to see birds including herons, kingfishers and the Nile Valley sunbird. The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking cruise ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Fast-growing Viking has one of the most diverse arrays of itineraries of any cruise line.

Not only does the California-based company offer ocean cruises in almost every corner of the world, it also offers river cruises on many of the world’s major rivers.

That’s notably different from most cruise lines. Typically, cruise lines operate either ocean cruises or river cruises but not both. That gives them a smaller range of itineraries.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Viking has a particularly large footprint when it comes to European river itineraries, with a wide range of sailings on nearly every European river of any note, from the Douro in Portugal to (until recently) the Volga in Russia.

The company also operates river trips on the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and it just began river trips on the Mississippi River .

There are 80 river ships in Viking’s fleet — an astounding number. None of its main competitors among river lines catering to North Americans, which include Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and AmaWaterways , have anywhere near that number of vessels.

Among ocean cruise destinations, Viking has a major presence in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, which it considers its home turf. (The company was founded by a Norwegian family.) However, you’ll find Viking’s nine traditional ocean ships everywhere from North America to Asia and Australia.

Last year, the line began cruising to Antarctica with its first expedition ship — a type of vessel built specifically for travel to remote, hard-to-reach places. Viking now has two such vessels.

Among the line’s voyages, there’s everything from eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean to 138-day around-the-world voyages.

Overwhelmed with choices? Here are the five best Viking cruise destinations where the line can truly offer you a memorable vacation.

Scandinavia and Northern Europe

Some of Viking’s most interesting itineraries are around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, with many beginning or ending in Norway — the homeland of the company’s founder and chairman, Torstein Hagen.

As Hagen once told me, Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea are what the company considers “Viking country” — a region where it wants to dominate.

During summers, in particular, Viking devotes an unusually large number of its ships to itineraries around Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea and other Northern Europe destinations such as Iceland. Many, notably, use the relatively small but famously scenic Norwegian city of Bergen (population 286,000) as a gateway, something no other line is doing. That allows for unusual variations on the typical Baltic Sea or Norwegian fjords cruise.

The line’s most popular route in the region, “Viking Homelands,” is a two-week-long, one-way trip between Bergen and Stockholm that combines several days of exploring the fjord region of Norway’s west coast with more-typical Baltic cruise destinations such as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Helsinki.

Note that, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Viking has pulled the St. Petersburg stop, as well as stops in Finland and Estonia from the Viking Homelands itinerary; the trips instead feature extra stops in Norway and Denmark. It’s unlikely St. Petersburg will return to the itinerary until the war in Ukraine is resolved.

Viking also offers a 14-night itinerary that includes several stops in the northernmost part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Dubbed “Into the Midnight Sun,” the one-way route between Bergen and London is unique because it combines calls in far-north Honningsvag and Tromso, Norway, with visits to Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. Though part of the United Kingdom, these archipelagos have ties to Norwegian and Viking history.

Itineraries that will take you from Bergen to Iceland or even as far away as France, Portugal and Spain also are available.

Viking’s Scandinavia and Northern Europe trips range widely in length from just seven nights to a whopping 28 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Viking offers that include calls in Northern Europe are one-way, 28-night voyages between Bergen and New York City. The trips include stops in Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

In Northern Europe, Viking ships mostly sail out of Bergen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London as well as Reykjavik.

The Mediterranean

Viking has grown into a major player in Mediterranean sailings, with more than 30 distinct itineraries that include stops in the region.

The trips include voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean and some that include stops across both areas.

Typical of the latter is the line’s 14-night “Mediterranean Antiquities” routing, a one-way trip between Athens and Barcelona that stops in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Monaco, France and Spain.

More-focused Mediterranean itineraries include the line’s nine-night “Empires of the Mediterranean” voyages between Venice and Athens, which mostly concentrate on stops along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s main hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice, Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens), Greece; and Istanbul.

Europe riverways

Viking is, quite simply, the giant of river cruising in Europe — at least among lines that cater to English speakers. The company operates around 70 river ships on a broad swath of the continent’s rivers — far more than any other river line catering to North Americans.

In all, the line accounts for about half of all river cruises taken by North Americans in the region. The next biggest player in Europe river cruises for North Americans, AmaWaterways, is less than half the size.

Among the rivers in Europe where Viking has a major presence are the Rhine, Main and Danube in Central Europe; the Seine, Rhone, Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde in France; the Douro in Portugal; and the Moselle and Elbe in Germany. Until recently, Viking also offered cruises on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. The voyages have been suspended since Russia invaded the country in early 2022.

On nearly all of the rivers, the line offers multiple itineraries with lengths ranging from seven nights to as many as 22 nights.

Among 10 different itineraries on the Rhine River alone, offerings range from a seven-night “Rhine Getaway” from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, to a 22-night “European Sojourn” from Amsterdam to Bucharest, Romania. The latter adds travel on the Main and Danube rivers to days on the Rhine.

Viking offers some of the most intimate and elegant cruises on the Nile, with three ships including the recently unveiled, 82-passenger Viking Osiris — one of our favorite vessels on the river.

All three of Viking’s Nile ships operate the same seven-night Nile cruise itinerary that Viking pairs with a four-night stay at a hotel in Cairo (three nights before the cruise and one night after) to create an 11-night “Pharaohs and Pyramids” tour of Egypt.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking’s loyalty program

The cruise portion of the tour includes visits to the historic temples of Luxor, Karnak, Esna, Dendera and Abu Simbel as well as a visit to the iconic Valley of the Kings. The stay in Cairo brings a visit to the pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and other sites.

Viking Osiris is the first of four sister ships that Viking plans to launch on the Nile by 2025 as it doubles its footprint in Egypt. The vessels offer a clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced design that mimics the look of Viking’s Europe-based vessels.

Notably, the ship features an entire deck of sprawling suites that rival anything else found on the Nile for luxury and comfort. Each comes with two full-size rooms — a large living room with a residential feel and an adjacent bedroom with a walk-in closet and bathroom. Each suite also has an outdoor balcony with seating for two — something you don’t always see on Nile ships.

Viking is a newcomer to cruises to Antarctica, but the destination is a big growth area for the line. Viking recently added two new, 378-passenger expedition cruise vessels specifically built to travel to the White Continent.

Dubbed Viking Octantis, the first of these vessels began sailings to Antarctica in February 2022. The second ship in the series, Viking Polaris, has just joined its sister in Antarctica this year. Together, the two ships are already making waves in the market for Antarctica cruises, in part because they have several new and unusual features.

Most notable is The Hangar, an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to two of each ship’s exploratory vessels while still in the protected interior of the ship. A first for an expedition ship, it’s something that is significantly improving the experience for passengers heading out on Antarctica exploration.

Related: The 3 types of Viking ships, explained

In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Viking offers several Antarctic itineraries, with the typical trip starting with a night at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before a flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, to board one of the two expedition ships for an 11-night cruise to Antarctica and back. A longer version of the trip features 13 nights on board one of the ships and extra days in Antarctica.

Viking also offers Antarctica sailings that combine a visit to the White Continent with stops in the Falkland Islands, Uruguay and Brazil.

Viking Octantis, notably, also operated Viking’s first sailings around the Great Lakes this year. In 2023, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will spend their summers in the Great Lakes.
