New Fall Shows Added in the US, Canada and Mexico

Depeche mode’s first tour in over five years kicks off march 23, 2023 in sacramento, ca.

Following the rapturous reception to their new single “Ghosts Again,”  Depeche Mode  have added a new Fall leg of North American tour dates to the Memento Mori Tour, which will support Memento Mori, their forthcoming studio album due out March 24. With the addition of these 29 new shows, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees will now set out on a colossal 75-date tour — their 19th tour and their first in over five years.

The Live Nation-presented tour begins March 23 with a limited North American run featuring stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, and Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. The band will then embark on their European stadium tour on May 16, with noted stops including the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium.

Following the end of the European summer run, the newly added tour dates bring the band back to North America in the Fall, with the tour stopping in Mexico City at Foro Sol before returning to the US and Canada. Newly announced tour stops include Austin’s Moody Center, Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, additional New York City shows at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena and more, and concluding with a multi-night run in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum and Crypto.com Arena.

Pre-sales will kick off with a Fan Pre-sale on Tuesday, February 21, with the general on sale beginning Friday, February 24 at 10am local time. For further information on the tour routing and ticket on-sale dates, please visit  depechemode.com . The full listing of dates, cities and venues is also below. On the Memento Mori Tour, the band will once again be partnering with luxury watchmaker Hublot to support charity endeavors tied to the tour.

Reception to the Memento Mori tour has been overwhelming with shows quickly selling out across Europe and North America, and over 1.5 million tickets already sold for the initial 46 shows. The tour is on track to be one of Depeche Mode’s largest to date and is also well on its way to being one of the largest worldwide tours of 2023. The tour will feature Depeche Mode favorites and rarities, alongside new songs from Memento Mori, including the new single ”Ghosts Again,” which has been heralded as “a melancholic and joyful ode” (Vulture), “hypnotic” (Rolling Stone), and “a gorgeous, haunting song” (Revolver). The beautifully stark and cinematic Anton Corbijn-directed video for “Ghosts Again” released on February 9th can be viewed at  https://depechemode.lnk.to/GhostsAgain .

Having sold more than 100 million records and played to more than 35 million fans worldwide, Depeche Mode remains an ever-evolving and singularly influential musical force. An indelible inspiration to fans, critics and artists alike, Depeche Mode continues to forge ahead, with the Memento Mori album and tour representing the opening of the newest chapter of a peerless and ongoing legacy.

Depeche Mode has returned to unveil a new album, “Memento Mori,” and accompanying tours of North America and Europe, all to kick off next year. The forthcoming album will be the band’s 15th studio effort and its first release since the death in May of founding member and keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher.

“We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time,” said Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore. “After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

“Memento Mori” will be Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s “Spirit.” While there is no official release date for the set just yet, the band’s reps confirm it will be arriving next spring, via Columbia Records.

The “Memento Mori Tour” is the band’s first in over five years, with their most recent trek being the 2017-2018 “Global Spirit Tour.” The Live Nation-presented tour will begin with a special, limited series of North American arena dates starting in late March, and will culminate in New York’s Madison Square Garden on April 14. After that, the band will head out to Europe for their summer stadium tour.

North American shows kick off in Sacramento, California, in March 2023, and take in a handful of cities in the United States and Canada, culminating in a Madison Square Garden concert on April 14. A huge arena tour of Europe follows. Check out the dates below.

European stadium stops include the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium. During a press conference in Berlin today (October 4), frontman Dave Gahan and main songwriter Martin Gore previewed a piece of music from their upcoming LP, which they’ve been recording in Santa Barbara, California.

The pair are due to head to New York following the event to finish working on the James Ford-produced new record.

“We’re quite far into it now, the actual recording process,” Gore explained. “We’ve got all of the tracks finished for the album, without them being mixed.”

Gahan said that Depeche Mode had begun writing the material “a couple of years back”, before eventually reuniting in the studio this summer.

A “memento mori” is an object that’s kept as a reminder of the inevitability of death – a skull, for example. According to Gore, the album’s title was in place prior to the passing of founding member Andy Fletcher aged 60 in May .

“It sounds very morbid, but I think you can look at it very positively as well,” he continued. “In that [you should] live each day to the max. I think that’s how we like to interpret it too.”

Additionally, Depeche Mode have announced a world tour for 2023, including a concert at Twickenham Stadium in London. Tickets go on general sale at 10am this Friday (October 7) – buy yours here .

In August, Gahan and Gore were pictured together in a recording studio . “Finding stability in what we know and love, and focusing on what gives life meaning and purpose,” they captioned the image on social media.

Depeche Mode last week shared an image of a mixing desk and teased the something would be happening today . The group then confirmed an announcement for midday BST in Berlin.

Speaking to NME about the future of Depeche Mode last year , Gahan hinted that the band would get back in the studio in 2022.

He said: “There’s a tonne of stuff that we’ve done with Depeche Mode that I’m really proud of. I think that’s come with time and age. Martin put out a record last year  which I really liked. I actually bought a copy because it wouldn’t feel right otherwise.

“I know he’s been pottering away in his studio as well, so I guess at some point next year we’ll get together. Hopefully at least to just have a chat about what we both feel like we could move forward with.”

Depeche Mode’s ‘Memento Mori’ Is a Bleak Celebration

By Kory Grow

In “Ghosts Again,” one of many introspective moments on Depeche Mode ‘s 15th full-length, Memento Mori , Dave Gahan croons, “Time is fleeting.” This is not a new revelation, but the tranquility in his voice feels fresh. More than four decades have passed since the group formed as a quartet of mostly teens eager to immerse themselves in the nascent synth-pop culture with party anthems like “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Now, with only Gahan and Martin Gore left in the lineup following the death last year of keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, they’re asking, “How much time do we have left?”

Acknowledging mortality defines much of Memento Mori, but it never feels heavy handed or even all that sullen. Some of the tracks even sound upbeat.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

The duo still specializes in pensiveness, too. “Before We Drown,” cowritten by Gahan, drummer Christian Eigner and multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordeno (members of Depeche Mode’s touring lineup), builds tension minute after minute, as Gahan sings, “First we stand up, then we fall down/We have to move forward, before we drown.” Synths effervesce eerily like fireworks around his voice as he sings the final words. “Always You” features buzzy synths and an emulation of steel drums buried deep in the track as Gahan places all his hope in someone, “You’re all I need to keep believing.”

Gypsy rose blanchard sues true crime content creator for defamation and fraud, ‘surviving r. kelly’ executive producer ‘begged’ diddy to confess to alleged assaults on cassie, bad boy for life: sean combs’ history of violence.

Occasionally, the sense of absence in the songs feels overwhelming; the chorus to “Caroline’s Monkey” is brutally sparse and stilted, as Gahan sarcastically sings, “Folding’s better than losing/Fixing’s better than healing” before eventually landing on “sometimes.” But mostly, the group packages its dark thoughts in ways that pay tribute to its past while acknowledging ghosts that haunt the present, and the spirits yet to come.

The final track, “Speak to Me,” even feels like Depeche Mode’s version of the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life,” via fuzzy Nick Cave synths and Gahan’s pleas for human contact. “I’d be grateful [to connect with you], I’d follow you around,” he sings, “I’m listening, I’m here now, I’m found,” before the synths crescendo into a cacophony. As always with Depeche Mode, everything counts in large amounts, and on Memonto Mori , the stakes feel bigger than ever.

Depeche Mode Closes Out 2023 With Moving Return Of ‘Memento Mori Tour’ To L.A. [Photos/Videos]

Depeche Mode is unquestionably one of England’s most iconic acts of the last half-century. But these synth-rock stars wouldn’t likely be where and what they are today—let alone have revolutionized modern music the way they did—without Los Angeles.

It was in the City of Angels, with its thriving LGBTQIA+ community, that Dave Gahan , Martin Gore , Andy Fletcher , and Vince Clarke broke out as bona fide global superstars. Their concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena back in June 1988, with 60,000 attendees, was a seminal moment in the band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career.

Given that unbreakable bond between band and city, it was only fitting that Depeche Mode closed out the North American legs of its Memento Mori Tour —and its 2023 calendar as a whole—in L.A. And not just with one show, but four: two at the Kia Forum and two more at Crypto.com Arena . This, after selling out the Forum back in March, near the start of their latest go-round.

Like that show, Depeche Mode’s latest trip to L.A. on Saturday at the Crypto.com Arena came, unfortunately, without Fletch. The founding member and long-time keyboardist passed away in May 2022, before the band recorded its latest album, Memento Mori . But not before Fletch had a chance to help write the songs that comprised Depeche Mode’s 2023 release. In that way, this tour and this particular performance were a tribute to Fletch.

The set began with a pair of singles off the new release, “My Cosmos is Mine” and “Wagging Tongue”, and went on to loop in more Memento Mori favorites, including “My Favourite Stranger” and “Ghosts Again” mid-set. That quartet of tracks came in second among featured Depeche Mode albums, just behind 1990’s seminal Violator with five. Among that latter group was “World Through My Eyes,” which was dedicated to Fletch and included images of him as a backdrop.

Not surprisingly, “Enjoy the Silence”, “Waiting for the Night”, and “Personal Jesus” all made the cut, either to close the main set or fill the encore. “Policy of Truth” clocked in during the first quarter of the 24-song show.

Depeche Mode brought to bear plenty of other staples of its repertoire, as well. From “Walking in My Shoes” and “Everything Counts” to “John the Revelator” and “Just Can’t Get Enough”, the band made sure to plumb every era for tunes to keep the packed house on its collective feet.

Along the way, Dave danced and twirled across the stage (and between costume changes), Christian Eigner kept the beat on drums and Peter Gordeno , who has toured with the band since 1998, held down the keyboard with aplomb. Martin did a little of everything, as is his wont. He filled in for some of Fletch’s parts on keys, sang his heart out on “But Not Tonight” and, of course, wailed the rest of the night away on guitar.

And together, they treated a fan named Martha to a rendition of “Happy Birthday”—their only cover of the evening. Not that Depeche Mode needs to pay real tribute to its forebears at this point. Their influence spreads far and wide, with Muse , The Killers , Nine Inch Nails , Shakira , No Doubt , Linkin Park , Coldplay , Chvrches , Rammstein , and La Roux among an exceedingly eclectic cast.

That sonic crusade doesn’t figure to end any time soon. Depeche Mode has dates lined up across Europe through the winter and spring of 2024, starting with a handful of U.K. concerts in January. Those first shows of the new year will serve as an official homecoming for one of Great Britain’s greatest bands.

But, in truth, this tour has already been a rousing success for arguably their most ardent base of support in L.A., with five spectacular shows in town to prove it.
