How to Get to Walt Disney World From Miami

How to Get to Walt Disney World From Miami

Miami is only 230 miles from Walt Disney World. That is just a short 3 and a half hour drive or a 1 hour flight! It is incredibly easy to go from one of Florida’s greatest party areas to the most Magical Place on Earth.

Whether you are planning a one day trip to Disney World to experience a festival at EPCOT or maybe you want to be at Disney for the latest ride opening, there are many different ways to get from Miami to Walt Disney World. Some travel options are definitely better than others, but we are going to guide you through those so you can make the best decision.

We visit Walt Disney World weekly and often travel between different areas in Florida. In fact, traveling from the Miami area to Walt Disney World is popular for guests either before or after enjoying a Disney Cruise.

In this planning guide:

Drive/ Rent a Car from Miami to Disney World

The easiest way to get from Miami to Disney is to drive. This method takes the hassle out of booking something ahead of time and trying to get all of the times to align with your plans. The downside to driving is factoring the tolls, gas, the wear and tear on your car, and the traffic you will encounter.

If you don’t want to drive your specific car or maybe you booked a trip to Miami and just want a day trip to Disney, you can always rent a car and then drive. This does involve an extra cost of the rental car and dealing with the bookings, but it is another option if you like having the freedom of your own car versus relying on other modes of transportation.

disney world day trip from miami

If choosing to drive, taking the Florida Turnpike and I-95 North is the fastest way to drive from Miami to Orlando. If you take this route, the trip should take you around three and a half hours and the route is 230 miles.

Again, while driving has its major benefits, the biggest downside is the traffic that can turn a 3 and a half hour drive into a four or four and a half hours.

Take a Train from Miami to Orlando

Another option that is great if you don’t want to drive or don’t have access to a car, is to take the train. There are two train options when going from Miami to Orlando.

An Amtrak train from Miami to Orlando is an easy option. The trip will last between five hours and seven and a half hours depending on which train you choose. Pricing is around $75 in total for the trip.

If you plan to take a train, you should expect to stay in Orlando overnight due to the timing of the trains. You will most likely lose the time that you want to do your activities, so it is best to do this option when you want to stay for a few days. Another downside to taking the train is you will have to use other transportation options to get from the station to Disney World.

disney world day trip from miami

The newest train option to go between Orlando and Miami is the Brightline Train. Brightline high-speed rail service from Miami to the new Orlando Station at Orlando International Airport is available. Choose from the budget-friendly Smart Service ticket level or treat yourself to Premium Service, which includes free drinks, snacks and priority boarding. Pricing is based on when you depart and return, but guests can book in March for $79.00 for SMART or $149 for Premium one way.

The Brightline train is much quicker than Amtrak in that it can get you between the two stations in only three and a half hours. Parking at this station is only $20 per day.

Catch a Flight from Miami to Orlando

Flying from Miami to Orlando may seem like the best option since it is the shortest on the surface, at only an hour, but flying does come with many downsides, one being that you will wait longer in the security line on your return from MCO than your entire flight.

disney world day trip from miami

In addition, smaller planes are used to fly between Miami and Orlando so the flights may not be as readily available. Booking early is the best way to ensure you get the dates and times you want. Spirit, American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, Jet Blue, Frontier, and United all fly between Miami and Orlando.

The last item to consider when flying is how to get from the airport to Walt Disney World. To read more about options from MCO (Orlando airport) to Walt Disney World, read our article  Mears Connect Airport Shuttle to Disney World Guide 2024 or  How Much is Uber and Lyft From Orlando Airport to Disney World? .

Ride a Bus from Miami to Orlando

A bus is another option for visitors that do not want to drive between Miami and Orlando. There are a few different bus lines that offer routes between Miami and Orlando.

Through Greyhound, you can book a variety of time options for your departure and return. Greyhound has added more bus routes using FlixBus.

The total trip is around six hours by bus for $80 round trip. You can also add upgrades such as select your seat or ride neighbor free. For baggage, you are able to bring one carry on and one stored bag.

disney world day trip from miami

Megabus is another company that offers bus routes that are about four and a half hours. The Megabus is a luxury double decker that offers at-seat power outlets, panoramic windows and a green alternative way to travel.

The bus departs at the Miami Intermodal Center and arrives at Florida Mall. This is located in the parking lot adjacent to the Lynx Florida Mall Superstop. Keep in mind overnight parking is not allowed, so if you are traveling from Orlando to Miami, you will not be able to park your car at the Orlando station.

Tickets for this bus are $35 one way, but seat upgrades can be bought for an additional fee. Guests are able to bring one piece of luggage and a personal item with them.

disney world day trip from miami

RedCoach is another bus option from Miami to Orlando. One way tickets range from $24.99 to $49.99 depending on the time you are looking to depart and which seating class you choose. Pricing will also vary by season and holidays. The RedCoach bus is between four to four and a half hours for a trip. Guest will get to choose their seat on the bus based upon the seating class. Guests are able to check two pieces of luggage and bring a carry on item with them for travel.

disney world day trip from miami

As with many of the other options above, you will need to plan in time to get from the bus station to Disney World and what transportation you are going to use to get there. With the time it takes by bus, it is also a smart idea to use this transportation if staying overnight.

Take a Rideshare Service to Miami

Another option to get from Miami to Walt Disney World is to book a rideshare service from your location in Miami.

A one way trip from Miami to Walt Disney World booked during a non-peak time is between $287 – $358 for an UberX and $507-$645 for an UberXL. Booking an Uber is not the cheapest option of the ones listed here in this article, especially when you have to also book the ride back. In addition, it may be difficult to find a driver willing to drive the long journey.

disney world day trip from miami

You can also request an estimate from Lyft. When getting estimates for a Lyft, the company explains that it provided you with a price for the Lyft fare, Local tolls or fees, and Tips to your driver, but notes that between the time of the estimate and booking can change the price. To book a Lyft for 4 people is between $250 and $297.  To book an extra comfort would be $420 and a Lyft black is $755 one way.

Things to Consider When Booking Travel from Miami

Before fully deciding on what method of travel you are going to take between Miami and Orlando, it is important to take a few factors into account.

Most of the time driving is going to be the cheapest option for any budget, but booking ahead and searching for deals for the bus, train, and flights, you could also fit any of these travel options into the budget you have set for your trip. Our family typically drives to Disney because even though we can sometimes find deals for our family, driving is typically always the cheapest and worth it for our family.

disney world day trip from miami

If you choose to drive, it is important to think about parking fees for the hotel you may stay at when visiting Disney. The on-property resorts have free parking for guests, so the parking fees would only apply for non-property hotels.

If choosing not to drive, you will need to factor in parking your car at the airport terminal, bus locations, or train stations.

disney world day trip from miami

The daily rate for the parking garage at the Miami Airport is $25.00. Valet Parking at the Miami Airport is $39.00 daily.

If taking the Greyhound bus from Miami and loading at the Golden Glades Multimodal Facility. Parking is available in the garage for no fee.

Parking at the Amtrak station for day and overnight is available through different lots. Amtrak does not have its own parking garage; however, Amtrak recommends using Spot Hero for parking.

3. Time Restraints & Convenience

When booking your travel, it is important to note if there are any specific time restraints to your travel.

A car will offer the most flexibility for leaving and arrival times. You can also stop along the way and pick up groceries or any other necessities if staying for multiple days.

Taking a flight is a large time commitment despite it being only an hour long flight. Most airports suggest getting to the airport at least two hours before your flight time. The MCO (Orlando) Airport suggestion is actually three hours ahead of time due to how busy security lines can be. I have waited a short 30 minutes at MCO and almost two hours at MCO. There is just no easy way to tell. This turns a one hour flight into at least a three hour adventure for your trip. When arriving you will need to either book a Mears driven by Sunshine Flyer bus or a Rideshare to get to your resort.

disney world day trip from miami

The train and bus have very set departure and arrival times, and while you don’t have to be at the stations as early as a plane, it is still a specific schedule that cannot be altered. If you miss your departure time, you are stuck trying to find an alternate option to get to your destination.

With the flight, train, and bus option, you also don’t have the convenience of a car to stop on the way to Disney property where you want. You will have to book some type of rideshare like Uber or Lyft and add a stop. Having to book a rideshare can also add time to your travel if you arrive or depart at a busy hour and have to wait.

4. Travel Companions

The final consideration when traveling is who are you traveling with? Depending on if you are traveling by yourself or with a large group, you may choose different modes of transportation to appeal to each individual.

If traveling solo, the bus or train may be a great option because you don’t have to worry about driving by yourself. You can use that time to sleep, read, or even work on the trip.

My family almost always chooses to drive to Disney because being in the car doesn’t bother my kids. However, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law always choose to fly because my nephew gets carsick on long drives.

You may not be able to fly if you have someone you are traveling with that is afraid of heights or health conditions that don’t make it safe to fly.

Another travel companion consideration is how much luggage you will have. The car typically provides the most space for items. Depending on the airline, you could have many bag options for cheap, such as Southwest, or the bags could be an extra expense, such as American Airlines. Most trains and bus options allow you to have a certain number of bags for free before having to pay for extra. It is important to consider what your travel companions will need to pack before choosing a transportation option.

There are many ways to travel from Miami to Disney World including a plane, train, bus, driving, and rideshares. With only 230 miles, or about 3 hours of travel, it is an easy day trip to take or you can stay for a few days.

There are bus options such as Redcoach, Megacoach, and Greyhound that offer bus routes between Miami to Orlando.

Yes, Amtrak runs from Miami to Orlando. There are two trains that run the route. Guests can book seats or a private room.

The fasted transportation option from Orlando to Miami is to take a flight. However, once adding in travel time to and from the airport and waiting at the security lines, driving is almost as quick and slightly more convenient.

How Far Is Disney World From Miami and What Are the Best Ways to Get There?

posted by James Brockbank on February 28, 2022 // last updated on February 28, 2022

Planning to journey from beautiful, vibrant Miami to exciting Disney World in Orlando? To help you get there safely and quickly, we have all the information you need on the trip from Miami to Orlando. There are numerous ways to get from one city to the other, and they all take a varying amount of time and fall into different price ranges.

So that you can educate yourself on the available options and make an informed decision, we’ve explained the five best ways to get from point A to point B and some of the estimated costs.

Choosing the right transportation method comes down to more than just the duration of the journey and the cost, so read until the end for important factors to consider when planning this trip.

How Far Is Disney World From Miami?

Where are disney and miami located, 1. drive i-95 north, 2. drive fl-60 west, 5. fly , budget , demographic, bottom line.

disney world day trip from miami

The distance between Miami and Disney World in Orlando is 230 miles. When driving, this distance takes roughly three hours and 20 minutes.

If you are considering doing a day trip from Miami to Disney World, this is definitely possible but will likely not be the most enjoyable experience. Seven hours in a car doesn’t leave much time for fun at the park, and long car rides take a significant toll on kids, and adults, honestly.

disney world day trip from miami

For starters, Miami and Disney World are both in Florida , so they are not too far from one another. Orlando is in the center of Florida, closer to the east side of the state. Miami is all the way at the bottom of the state, right on the coast.

5 Best Ways to Get There

To help you plan your trip, this is a quick rundown of the five best ways to get from Miami to Orlando so you can enjoy the theme parks Disney has to offer.

disney world day trip from miami

Taking the Florida Turnpike and I-95 North is the fastest way to drive from Miami to Florida. If you take this route, the trip should take you around three and a half hours and the route is 230 miles. While this is the most popular route, people sometimes avoid it because of the traffic.

If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive that is likely to have less traffic, you can take the Florida Turnpike and FL-60 West .

Taking this route, you’ll have to drive for about four hours—243 miles. But there is a possibility this route could save you time if I-95 is packed with traffic. Consider taking this slightly longer route if you go to Disney during the height of tourist season in the summer.

If you don’t want to drive or don’t have access to a car, taking an Amtrak train from Miami to Disney is an easy option. You can board an Amtrak train going to Orlando from Miami at Lakeland Amtrak Station, Kissimmee Amtrak Station, Lynx Kissimmee Intermodal Station, or the Walt Disney World Transportation and Ticket Center.

The cost to take an Amtrak train for this distance is about $75, depending on which train station you buy your ticket at. The length of this trip is around seven and a half hours, which is almost double the time it takes to drive yourself. If you plan to take a train, you should expect to stay in Orlando overnight, so plan accordingly.

There are a handful of buses that will get you from Miami to Orlando. A Greyhound bus travels from Miami to Orlando and back not once, but twice a day, giving you two opportunities to make it to Disney this way.

Greyhound bus tickets can cost between $30 and $50 for a one-way, depending on the type of ticket you purchase. Greyhound offers flexible tickets that you can reschedule with ease. It takes these buses around six and a half hours to get from Miami to Orlando.

If Disney World is going to be the focus of your Florida trip, it may be easier to fly directly into Orlando. The airport closest to Disney World is the Orlando International Airport (MCO). If, for some reason, you must fly into Miami, it is possible to take a flight from Miami International Airport right to Orlando International Airport.

The flight will be around an hour or less, so you’ll likely spend as much time in security and at your gate as you will on the plane. If you hate airports and the effort of boarding a plane and deplaning, this is not the best option for you. The price of these flights is hard to say, as it varies wildly depending on the time of year and many other factors.

The other issue with flying from Miami to Orlando is that there are not always a plethora of these small flights available, since driving is such an available option for most. If you plan to fly, make sure you book your flight ahead of time and plan accordingly around those flights.

disney world day trip from miami

Considerations

There are some aspects of your trip to keep in mind when deciding the best way to get from Miami to Florida. Since there are a variety of options, consider these factors to help you figure out the best transportation method for your vacation.

As mentioned, the I-95 driving route is technically shorter but can take longer, depending on traffic. You can check apps like Waze the day of to get an idea of what traffic will be like and decide that way.

The time of year you go plays a huge role in this as Disney around summer and spring vacation will be packed with tourists. But if you go in October instead or around a big holiday, you may be able to avoid the I-95 traffic and make it there in a tight three hours and 20 minutes.

Keep in mind that if you drive to Disney, you also have to park at Disney. Parking at Disney can be a true nightmare and can take significant time out of your theme park day. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of parking, which also costs money, then it’s best you don’t drive to Orlando.

If your trip from Miami to Orlando is about more than just Disney, there may be pitstops along the way you and your family want to check out. If this is the case, consider which pitstops you want to see and what highway they run along so you can pick the best route to take to see all the attractions.

Another reason for pitstops is if you have little kids, they’ll likely need the bathroom at least once throughout the almost four-hour drive. If you know your group will want to make frequent stops to use the restroom, get food, or sightsee, a train or bus will not be the right transportation method.

Of course, you should choose the transportation method that fits your budget. It’s hard to say what the cheapest option will be, but it is likely one of the Greyhound buses unless you have your own car. But even with your car, gas and parking fees can add up quickly.

As mentioned, the flight prices can’t be discussed for certain as they change often, but ins some situations this could be the cheapest option, especially if you don’t have significant luggage. Driving gives you more freedom but renting a car can be expensive, especially in Florida, and if you are under 25 it could cost you thousands in insurance just for a day rental.

Flying or taking the train with a large group of five or more people can be a major hassle. But if you are just traveling in a couple, these things are easier.

On the other hand, a group of four adults can switch off driving shifts, but a solo vacationer will have to drive the entire way by themselves. Consider how the size of your group will fit into these transportation methods and if your choice is practical for the number of people you are with.

Just as important as group size is group dynamic. Are you a family of four with small kids? Are you a newlywed couple? Are you a group of five adults? A small baby will likely struggle more on a bus than they would in a car. Newlyweds will likely have no problem taking this short flight, as if this is a honeymoon, it will have been planned ahead.

For this consideration, it comes down to your own judgment call. Some babies love planes, some hate them, some adults hate driving, some prefer it to a bus, so you need to account for you and your group’s preferences.

There is no one correct way to travel from Miami to Orlando, so you can choose any of the options discussed and likely have a wonderful time on your vacation. Make sure you plan enough time to actually enjoy the theme parks, and if you think you will need overnight accommodations, plan these before going to be safe.

Different Ways to Get From Miami to Disney World

There are a few different options when it comes to traveling from Miami to Disney World. You could drive, fly, rent a car, use a rideshare, take a bus, or a train. You could also use a combination of those options! Let’s take a closer look at each option for further information on each one.

Drive Your Own Vehicle

Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy

The first option for traveling from Miami to Disney World would be to drive your own vehicle. This may be the most comfortable and convenient option for some travelers. When driving your own vehicle, you won’t need to make any traveling arrangements prior to your travel date. You’ll also have the comfort of a familiar driver and vehicle.

A trip from Miami to Disney World in your own vehicle will be about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The cost of driving your own vehicle would of course be $0. However, you will want to keep in mind that you’ll be paying for gas along the way as well as tolls.

When Driving Your Own Vehicle From Miami to Disney World:

  • Cost – Gas and Tolls
  • Travel Time – 3 Hours 30 Minutes

Book a Flight

Flight of Passage queue

While some may not think about flying since Miami is only a few hours away, it actually is possible to book a flight! Timewise, flying is going to be the fastest option on this list. A flight from Miami International Airport to Orlando International Airport is only about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

However, even though the flight itself is short, remember that it will take up more of your time than that. You’ll want to consider the time beforehand as well as afterwards. Normally, you’re instructed to arrive at the airport at least a couple hours before your flight to ensure that you have time to get through security and get your luggage checked in (if you have any). If you do have luggage, you’ll want to add on the additional time at the end of the flight that it usually takes to collect your bags.

Of course, the cost of your flight will vary depending on which airline you take as well as the date. Currently, I’m able to find one-way flights from Miami to Orlando for an average of $65-$120. You may have additional charges for seats and luggage.

Something else you’ll want to consider when flying is how you’re going to get from the airport to Disney World, as that will be an additional cost. From the airport, you can rent a car, use a rideshare, or shuttle service .

When Flying From Miami to Disney World:

  • Cost – Current average one-way cost of $65-$120 ( Plus seats, bags, and transportation from the airport to Disney World)
  • Travel Time – 1 Hour 15 Minutes

Drive a Rental Car

Cruz from Hollywood Studios

Choosing to drive a rental car from Miami to Disney World is very similar to driving your own vehicle. One similarity would be travel time. Whether you’re driving your own vehicle or driving one that you’ve rented, it will still take you about 3 hours and 30 minutes to get from Miami to Disney World. Another similarity would be the comfort of knowing your driver, whether that be yourself or someone else in your party.

As far as cost goes, you’d similarly have to pay for gas and tolls. You would, however, have the additional cost of renting the car. The cost of your rental will vary depending on which car rental company you use, what type of vehicle you rent, and how long you rent the vehicle for.

When Driving a Rental Car From Miami to Disney World:

  • Cost – Gas, Tolls, and Car Rental

Use a Rideshare

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway sign

If you’re unfamiliar, a rideshare is when you make an arrangement for a driver to take you from one location to another. It’s similar to a taxi service, except when you use a rideshare, the driver is using their own personal vehicle. Usually, rideshares are used for much shorter distances. However, it is possible to take a rideshare from Miami to Disney World.

If you prefer someone else to drive you places, taking a rideshare from Miami to Disney World may be something that you want to consider. It is, however, very pricey to take a rideshare for this far of a distance. While the prices may look similar to what a rental car would cost you, remember that rideshare prices are only one-way. When you rent a car, you have that vehicle for the duration of your trip.

The two most popular rideshare companies are Uber and Lyft. The estimated travel time for a ride with Uber from Miami to Disney World is 4 hours and 10 minutes. Lyft’s estimated travel time is 5 hours. Prices for rideshares vary depending on time of day, how busy they are, and which vehicle type you want. However, I will provide a list of prices that I was given when writing this article so you can see an estimate.

When Taking a Rideshare from Miami to Disney World:

  • 7 hrs/140 miles
  • None were available. No price was given.
  • Travel Time – 4-5 Hours

50th Anniversary Disney bus

Another way you can get from Miami to Disney World is by bus. A popular bus company that you could use is Greyhound. The amount of time that it will take for your bus trip will depend on which route you choose. However, the shortest amount of time for a trip with Greyhound will be 3 hours and 45 minutes and have a minimum of 2 stops. Greyhound trips from Miami to Orlando can cost as little as $24.99, but can cost more. The highest price that I’m currently seeing is $70.99. Tickets can be purchased online, on the app, or in person with cash. The price of your Greyhound ticket includes your ride, one carry-on bag, and one bag that is stored underneath. On the bus, you’ll also have access to free Wi-Fi, electrical ports, reclining seats, foot rests, extra leg room, and a restroom.

When riding a bus, you won’t be dropped off directly at the Walt Disney World Resort. You will arrive at a bus station. Similarly to the airport, you will need to have transportation for the rest of your trip to Disney World. Renting a car won’t be an option at the bus station, but you can still use a rideshare, taxi, or shuttle service.

When Taking a Bus From Miami to Disney World:

  • Cost – Current prices are $24.99-$70.99
  • Travel Time – 3 Hours 45 Minutes  (Minimum)

9 Best Day Trips from Disney World

Bok Tower Garden

There’s so much to experience inside Walt Disney World Resort that most people never even consider leaving the park. However, there are tons of potentially fun and educational day trips within a short drive of Disney World. So if you brought a car (or don’t mind renting one) and you have an extra day to spare, then maybe you should consider taking one of these day trips from Disney World.  There is so much to see and do in the central region of Florida!

All of the destinations listed below are located no more than an hour or two from your Disney-area hotel.  Plus, they’re family-friendly and most are affordable. This list includes beaches, nature preserves, historic cities, and even more theme parks!  So, without further ado, here’s our list of the top 9 day trips from Disney World.

1. Universal Orlando Resort

universal orlando reosrt dragon blowing fire

Universal Orlando Resort, also known as Universal Orlando or just “Universal,” is an American theme park resort and entertainment complex based in Orlando, Florida.

It’s only about 10 miles from Disney World (20-30 minutes) and is an easy day trip. There are plenty of transportation options between Disney and Universal , including Uber, shuttle, taxi, or car rental.

Universal Orlando Resort is home to two theme parks, one water park, and one dining, shopping, and entertainment district.

The first theme park, Universal Studios, is comprised of exciting attractions and areas themed around the film industry.

Islands of Adventure, the second theme park,  is home to eight distinct “islands” that are themed around different forms of adventure.

Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a huge draw, especially for Harry Potter fans.  The area is sandwiched inside both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure theme park.  Here’s a Universal Orlando map to help you out.

Volcano Bay is Universal’s 27-acre water park that includes water coasters, water slides, raft rides, a lazy river, and wave pools.

Universal CityWalk Orlando is the resort’s entertainment and retail district and features nightclubs and dozens of dining establishments like Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville,  and Voodoo Doughnut.

Check out our list of the Best Rides at Universal and Universal Studios vs Disney World before you go.

Address:  6000 Universal Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819

2. SeaWorld

SeaWorld Orlando is a nearby marine zoological park. In 2018, the theme park hosted a reported 4.594 million guests, which ranks it as the 10th most visited amusement park in the US.

When combined with the neighboring Aquatica and Discovery Cove, the formation is known as  SeaWorld Parks and Resorts Orlando. The entertainment complex consists of three parks and many hotels.

There are rides and attractions, shows and presentations, and interesting animal attractions. It’s fun for the whole family!

The distance between SeaWorld Orlando and Disney Springs is only about 5 miles. Therefore, it makes an easy day trip if you are staying at one of Disney’s hotels.

Address:  7007 Sea World Dr, Orlando, FL 32821

3. St. Augustine

Have you ever been to the oldest city in America? If not, then you’ve never been to St. Augustine.

St. Augustine is located about two hours northeast of Walt Disney World and makes for a good day trip.

The city, founded in 1565,  is located on the northeast coast of Florida. Its know for its Spanish colonial architecture, especially C astillo de San Marcos, a fort built by early Spanish settlers.

There are many family-friendly attractions and activities in the area, including visits to St. Augustine Beach, Crescent Beach, and Anastasia State Park, a wildlife sanctuary.  You can also explore the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum to check out all the pirate artifacts, or just explore the downtown area by trolley or by walking the cobblestone streets.

4. Kennedy Space Center

Cape Canaveral has the closest beach to Disney World, where you can just relax and soak up some sun — or head directly to the Kennedy Space Center.

If you are interested in science or space, the Kennedy Space Center is a wonderful day trip from Disney World.  Take a tour of the facility, view the exhibits, see the shuttle launchpads, and experience the IMAX screening and simulator.

This can be a relaxing, fun, and/or educational day trip from Disney World — and a great option for STEM curriculum coverage on vacation if you’re homeschooling your kids .

Address: Space Commerce Way, Merritt Island, FL 32953

5. The Beaches

There are plenty of beaches located within a reasonable driving distance of Disney World.  We have an extended list in our Beaches Near Disney World article, but here are a couple of favorites:

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach has been ranked the #1 beach in America for a reason. It’s known for its laid-back atmosphere, soft, white sand, and – you guessed it – clear water!

The beach attracts visitors year-round.  It gives visitors an opportunity to swim in the warm Gulf of Mexico waters or go jet-skiing, parasailing, and paddleboarding.

The winding beachfront promenade is a popular spot for cyclists and rollerblades, and the area has plenty of casual seafood restaurants and cafes if you need a bite.

At sunset, you will find nightly festivals with street performers and craft vendors on Pier 60 Park.

Address: Causeway Blvd, Clearwater Beach, FL 33767

New Smyrna Beach

The city of New Smyrna Beach is south of Daytona Beach, about a 1.5 hr drive from Walt Disney World Resort. The area is known for its beaches, including Canaveral National Seashore. Smyrna Dunes Park has beautiful views of Ponce Inlet and the lighthouse.

The downtown Canal Street Historic District is lined with palm trees, shops, art galleries, and the New Smyrna Museum of History.

Guests can come here to surf, swim, fish, rent a bike, explore the city, or just relax along the shoreline.

Address: New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169

Daytona Beach

Daytona is known for its NASCAR racing and spring break crowds, but the beach alone is a great place to relax on your day away from Disney World.  Just be sure to avoid the times when crowds are expected.

The beach’s boardwalk is a great place for families.  There are games, carnival rides, and numerous dining spots along the beachfront.

Address: Daytona Beach, FL 32118

6. The Everglades

Everglades National Park is one of Florida’s most popular natural attractions. It’s a 1.5-million-acre wetland preserve on the southernmost tip of the state.

The Everglades is comprised of coastal mangroves, pine flatwoods, and sawgrass marshes. It’s home to hundreds of animal species, including the American alligator, Florida panther, West Indian manatee, and leatherback turtle.

Guests can explore the everglades via an airboat with guided tours. The national park is a way to see some of America’s most interesting flora and fauna, and worthy of a day trip from Walt Disney World.

7. Legoland Florida

Located about an hour away from Disney World, Legoland Florida is a theme park that has over 50 rides spread out over 150 acres.

The park is marketed towards families with children age 11 and under.

Legoland Orlando’s attractions include several roller coasters (suitable for younger children) and education exhibits like a model village of scenes and landmarks from around the world (created out of millions of Lego bricks).

If you or your children like legos, then this is the ideal day trip from Disney World!

Address: 1204 Helena Rd, Winter Haven, FL 33884

8. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is home to an abundance of natural wonders, including its most famous resident: manatees.

Visitors go on the walking trails and a floating observatory to get a closer look at the animals.

The park is also home to American alligators, Black bears, bobcats, herons, flamingos, river otters, white-tailed deer, and the hippopotamus Lu, known for his performances in many movies over the past several decades.

Address:  4150 S Suncoast Blvd, Homosassa, FL 34446

Other Daytrips to Experience Florida’s Wildlife

Blue Springs State Park

Blue Springs State Park is a seasonal park featuring wildlife (like manatees, wild hogs, and bald eagles) and a warm spring on the St. John River. It’s popular for swimming, kayaking, and family fun.

The park has walking trails on the island which lead to a fascinating Native American shell mound. If kayaking isn’t your thing, you can also camp, fish, or go SCUBA diving.

Address:  2100 W French Ave, Orange City, FL 32763

Lake Toho is one of Florida’s best bass fishing spots.

Here you can take a guided trip and learn how to fish from the experts.  These fishing professionals can teach you how it’s done or helping to improve your skills and show you a few new tricks.

If you’re already a bass-fishing pro, then you may want to just go out on your own.

69 Lakeview Dr. Kissimmee, Florida 34741

9. Bok Tower Gardens

Looking for some peace and quiet after several days at the theme parks? Then look no further: Bok Tower Gardens is calling you!

This contemplative garden and bird sanctuary is located just north of Lake Wales, Florida. The park includes a 250-acre garden, visitor’s center, Pinewood Estate, and the Pine Ridge Trail. The centerpiece is a 205-foot tall Singing Tower, which has stood here since 1929. There are about 60 bells that take up the chorus as the clock chimes.

Spectacular views, walking trails, and tranquility abound!

Address: 1151 Tower Blvd, Lake Wales, FL 33853

Editor’s Note

Ponce De Leon Springs and the metro Tampa area didn’t make our list, but they are worthy of consideration. There are just too many great things to experience in Florida that we can’t name them all!

For that matter, you don’t even necessarily need to commit an entire day — there are plenty of great activities around Orlando that only require an hour or two of your time.

With that said, we hope that our Day Trips from Disney World page has given you some good ideas.

Universal Studios is one of the most popular family days out in the United States of America, if not the world.

Away from Harry Potter World you can experience the adrenaline thrill of the Fast & Furious Supercharged adventure or if your blood pressure can’t take it, the Despicable Me – Minion Mayhem is good, honest fun.

8. Little Havana

Little Havana, Miami

For decades there has been a thriving Cuban community in Miami who have bought from the islands many of their traditions and cultural quirks.

Stepping foot in Little Havana will feel like you are walking the streets of Cuba itself.

With the Miami sun beating down and the smell of cortadito in the air you’ll feel like you have ventured into the Caribbean, without even leaving the mainland.

Take time in the afternoon to visit the cigar factory and learn the fine art of cigar rolling from master artisans.

Throughout the day you can chat to locals, learn about their life in Little Havana and even hear about the stories of the first-generation immigrants who created this vibrant neighbourhood.

Wynwood, Miami

The Wynwood neighbourhood of Miami is one of the most arty and trendy there is.

This hipster district is modern and buzzing and home to more shabby-chic and minimalist coffee shops and bars than you can shake your hook at.

Now the new home of craft beer, you can easily spend an afternoon sampling what each innovative brewhouse has to offer.

Walking through Wynwood is a wonderful experience.

22 Amazing Florida Day Trips You Can Take from Miami

22 Amazing Florida Day Trips You Can Take from Miami

  • Pinterest 426

Looking for easy Florida day trips you can take from Miami? After living in South Florida for 8 years, these are my top picks.

Miami is one of the world’s top vacation destinations, with luxurious hotels, exclusive nightclubs and iconic beaches. There’s so much to offer, it’s hard to believe anyone would ever want to leave this South Florida paradise.

Thankfully, the city is situated such that visitors and residents alike can take several easy day trips and be back in time for a mimosa brunch the next day.

The trips on this list are located in the central and southern areas of the state for ease of access. There are many cool places in North Florida, like Devil’s Den and the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine, but that’s a stretch for a Miami day trip.

If you’re looking for the best Florida day trips from Miami, check out these ideas for a quick change of scenery.

1) Visit Homestead

Florida day trip orchid farm

Homestead is just 35 miles south of Miami, but it’s a completely different landscape. Instead of Art Deco buildings and palm trees, you’ll find sprawling gardens and countryside.

obert is Here, a seasonal produce market, was recently featured by O magazine as a must-see in the sunshine state. If you’re in the area from November to mid-April, make a stop by Knaus Berry Farms for their famous cinnamon buns. You’ll also find R.F. Orchids here, a highly awarded nursery with hundreds of species of orchids and free tours on weekends. Done

2) Learn the mysteries of Coral Castle

day trips from Miami Florida Coral Castle

Built by one man as a tribute to his would-be bride, Coral Castle is often featured as one of the world’s most mysterious destinations.

This is because, to date, it’s unclear how Ed Leedskalnin managed to unearth, transport and mold over 1,100 tons of coral rock.

A few years ago, a giant piece of rock that pivots to serve as the back door stopped turning. Despite their best efforts and an abundance modern technology, crews have been unable to restore the door to its prior functioning.

3) Attend a Full Moon Party in  the Florida Keys

People walking along the beach at sunset

Do you like piña coladas and dancing on the beach? If so then head to Islamorada, one of the first stops when you’re entering the Florida Keys. Morada Bay hosts a party every month during the full moon, complete with bonfires, fireworks and even a marching band.

4) Go to Siesta Key Beach

View of crowds at Siesta Key Beach

Located just south of Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach is consistently ranked one of the top 3 beaches in the United States, and it’s not hard to see why. With fine, baby powder-like sand and more than 250 days of sunshine a year on average, this is the perfect place to escape the stressors of big city life.

It’s less than 4 hours away from Miami and beats South Beach every time.

5) See the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

Interior of the Dali Museum

The last place you’d expect to find the largest collection of Salvador Dali paintings outside of Europe is in St. Petersburg, Florida. Then again, when it comes to this eccentric artist, fans know to expect the unexpected.

Featuring a giant dome designed to resemble Dali’s Theatre and Museum in Figueres, Spain , guests tend to take as many pictures of the building itself as they do of the artwork inside.

6) Go sea shelling in the Ten Thousand Islands

Seashells on the beach

The Ten Thousand islands are only about an hour and a half from Miami and offer a secluded seashell hunting experience. Instead of walking down a public beach, visitors take a boat onto small islands and have their pick of what the tide brought in that day.

If you’re looking for a reliable tour provider, I recommend Reel Kind Fishing .

7) Take an Everglades boat tour

Airboat in the Everglades

Taking an airboat tour in the Everglades is a Florida experience everyone must try at least once. You’re guaranteed to spot alligators, and it’s interesting to see the swamp lands that once covered the entire state.

If you choose to take a tour through the Seminole Indian tribe, stick around afterwards to see alligator wrestling as well.

8) Bike ride down Shark Valley

Baby alligator in the grass

Also located in the Everglades, Shark Valley is considered South Florida’s best bike trail, and gets packed on the weekends. This is because you’re guaranteed to see wildlife, from alligators to flamingos.

Those who aren’t athletically inclined will be relieved to know there’s a tram available, so you can still enjoy the trail sans pedaling.

9) Go antiquing in Naples

Antique shop storefront

Naples, Florida is one of the richest cities in the country and served as the original vacation spot for wealthy business tycoons. Today, remnants of these estates can be found in antique shops throughout the city.

You never know what treasures you’ll stumble upon while antique hunting.

10) Hop on a boat to the Bahamas

Day Trips Florida to the Bahamas

South Florida is the only place in the country from which you can take a day trip to the Bahamas. Hop on a 2-hour ferry from Port Everglades and spend the day in Grand Bahama, exploring Freeport and surrounding attractions.

Like they say, it’s just better in the Bahamas.

11) Swim with manatees at Crystal River

Manatee swimming under water

Manatees seek refuge in Florida during the cold and have been known to flock by the hundreds to Crystal River, a national wildlife refuge, between January and March. Guests can paddle board, swim or kayak in the area.

Chances are high you’ll run into some friendly marine life along the way, so have your GoPro at the ready.

12) Visit Disney World

Day Trips in Florida to Disney World

Disney World, aka the happiest place on earth, is just over 3 hours away from Miami and is one of the quintessential Florida day trips. If you’re craving a little magic, take a drive to Orlando and relive your childhood.

Most Florida residents are annual pass holders and have gone to Disney no less than a dozen times in their life. If they’re not pass holders, Florida residents are at least entitled to a discount.

Popular events include Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and the Annual Food and Wine Festival at Epcot.

13) Go to Universal Studios

Dragon at Harry Potter World

Not a fan of Mickey Mouse? Spend some time with Harry Potter or Spiderman instead at Universal Studios. This is home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, spanning across both parts and connected by the Hogwarts Express, part ride, part transportation. The two main areas are Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

You can also visit Universal Studios without admission to Harry Potter World, going on the Jurassic Park Ride or Hulk roller coaster. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Miami to Orlando so you need to be out the door by 5am to make a day trip work.

14) Venture up to Fort Lauderdale

15) Try wine tasting at Schnebly Winery

Group at wine tasting table

Schnebly Winery is a local winery and brewery with events like line dancing and karaoke throughout the week. There’s a restaurant on site, though you need a reservation to be able to dine there. If you’re looking for a place that’s off the beaten path and offers wine and beer tastings, this is a great spot.

Pro tip : Check online for discounts before you go through deal sites like Groupon or Living Social.

16) Take a canoe through Peace River

Woman kayaking alone

17) Visit Dry Tortugas National Park

View of Fort Jefferson

If the Bahamas doesn’t feel secluded enough for you, take a seaplane or boat over to Dry Tortugas National Park , landing at Fort Jefferson. Your visit is timed and can last for a half or full day.

Dry Tortugas is a series of remote islands 70 miles west of Key West which are difficult to access, but provide pristine water for snorkeling, diving and other aquatic activities.

18) See the Kennedy Space Center

NASA globe spinning

19) Watch a mermaid show

Mermaids underwater

20) Shop at outlet malls

Outdoor outlet mall in Orlando

Outlet malls are a big deal in Florida. Perhaps its because people like to adhere to a certain standard of living here, or maybe they just like to save a buck.

Whatever the case, big outlet malls like Sawgrass Mall and the Orlando International Premium Outlets could keep you entertained for hours, and the best part of taking a day trip is you don’t have to worry about fitting your purchases inside luggage.

21) Get to know Fort Myers

Colorful beach apartments

22) Drink tea at the Japanese Garden in Delray Beach

How much is a ticket to Disney? Cheaper than usual this summer

disney world day trip from miami

Summer can be scorching hot in Florida, but if you can take the heat, you can score some of the best deals of the yea r at Walt Disney World.

Special three- and four-day Magic Tickets bring prices down to under $100 a day for adults, which at Disney and other theme parks means anyone age 10 and up.

Disneyland in California is also offering a summer promo slashing prices in half for kids ages 3 to 9. Admission is always free for children under the age of 3 at both resorts.

Here’s what to know about saving at Disney parks this summer.

How much do tickets to Disney World cost?

Disney World tickets vary by date and park. This year, starting prices for one-day, one-park admission for adults range from $109 at Disney's Animal Kingdom to $124 at Magic Kingdom. Next year , the cheapest one-day, one-park adult tickets will cost $119. On most dates, prices are significantly higher than the starting price.

However, the resort is offering two ticket deals through the summer. The 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket costs $396, which works out to $99 a day. That includes one day at each of Disney World’s four theme parks, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Tickets are valid through Sept. 22 and must be used within seven days of the start date.

The 3-Day, 3-Park Magic Ticket costs $267, which works out to $89 a day. It includes one day each at EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Admission to Magic Kingdom is not included. Tickets are valid through Sept. 24 and must be used within five days of the start date.

Disneyland vs. Disney World: What's the difference? How to choose.

How much does it cost to go to Disneyland?

Disneyland ticket prices also vary by date. One-day, one-park admission starts at $104 for adults and $98 for kids ages 3 to 9. However this summer, child prices drop down to less than $50 per day with a special 3-Day Disneyland Ticket offer.

Guests visiting Monday through Thursday can save the most. Three-day tickets cost $249 for adults and $149 for children, which works out to $83 per day for adults and less than $50 per day for kids with no park hopping. Monday to Thursday tickets may not be used on Fridays or weekends.

Guests who want more flexibility can get 3-day tickets valid any day of the week for $299 per adult (less than $100 per day) and $199 per child (less than $67 per day), without park hopping.

Both types of tickets are valid from June 10 through Sept. 26 and are subject to park reservation availability. Unlike Disney World, Disneyland still requires park reservations for all tickets.

SpaceX, NASA rocket launch traffic: Fastest routes from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach

Best view to watch a rocket launch head to space coast. toll routes are the fastest way from orlando to near kennedy space center..

Where’s the best place to watch a rocket launch ?

Google and Florida residents will likely say anywhere on the Space Coast of Florida, which has 72 miles of coast and is located about an hour from Orlando theme parks.

With summer vacation approaching, many families will likely be in Orlando to enjoy its theme parks and other attractions. If visitors wanted to add one more “attraction” or must-see thing to do, they could consider driving from Orlando to watch a rocket launch from a Space Coast beach. FLORIDA TODAY, a USA TODAY Network-Florida newspaper, provides interactive launch coverage and livestream at  floridatoday.com/space  with frequent updates on launches at least 90 minutes in advance, sometimes longer, depending on the mission. For questions or comments, email  Space Reporter Rick Neale  at [email protected] or tweet him  @rickneale1  on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. You also can contact Space Reporter Brooke Edwards at [email protected] or tweet her  @brookeofstars  on X or  Instagram .

No tolls route from Orlando to Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Kennedy Space Center, Florida

The fastest way to get from downtown Orlando to Central Brevard without tolls is to take State Road 50, then head east on State Road 520 to Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach is less than 10 minutes from neighboring Cape Canaveral.

If you want to go to North Brevard (Titusville, Canaveral National Seashore, near Kennedy Space Center) from the downtown Orlando area, take State Road 50.

Toll roads are more time-efficient. Fastest way from Orlando to Brevard County, Florida

No matter where you're coming from, your trip will be faster if you take the routes with tolls, as these roads are the most direct and have the highest average speeds, according to according to Michael Williams, deputy communications director at Florida Department of Transportation.

"Toll roads provide travelers with a choice that typically has greater reliability, less congestion and quicker travel times," Williams said. "Also, toll roads and other limited access roads in Central Florida are patrolled by Road Rangers who can render several services for free, including changing a flat tire, providing one gallon of gas, making minor mechanical repairs and towing a disabled vehicle to a safe spot."

If you're coming to Brevard from Orlando area, the toll roads you'll want to take are State Road 417 or State Road 408 to State Road 528.

It's best to map your route before the drive or have a navigator or directions plugged into your speaker system.

From Orlando theme parks via toll roads to Central Brevard area (Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral): From Walt Disney World, take State Road 417 north, then head to State Road 528 east. Another option is I-4 to State Road 528 east. From Universal Studios, drivers can take State Road 408 east to to State Road 528 east. Or, take State Road 417 north to State Road 528 east.

Does weather, time of day impact best route?

Toll roads are considered the fastest routes for everyone, including motorcyclists, regardless of weather or time of day, according to Williams. However, some times are busier than others.

These roads will experience heaviest traffic from around 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily, according to Williams. Traffic is lightest between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Preparing for your trip: Know what Orlando traffic looks like now

Before heading out, you can map your trip on apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps, Waze and others. Not only will these apps show you how long you can expect your drive to take, but they'll also show you if there are crashes or other delays along your route.

You can also check live traffic feeds from Florida Highway Patrol and FL511 , which will show you crashes, fires and other incidents along your route. FL511's feed allows you to map your trip with directions that can be printed ahead of your drive.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recommends checking your vehicle's fluids and tire pressure before making a trip away from home, and also making sure you have your proof of insurance and registration with you. It's also a good idea to make sure you have a spare tire and to check its pressure prior to your trip, according to FLHSMV.

Start Planning An Extra Vacation Day, Disney World Is Getting a Fifth Park!

  • Big news from Disney: a new deal with Florida ensures $17 billion investment & fifth theme park.
  • Landmark agreement ends long-standing tensions, benefits both Disney and the state.
  • Massive investment expected to create jobs, boost economy, and enhance tourism in Florida.

There's huge news coming out of the Magic Kingdom this evening. After years of tensions between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis , a new development agreement has been reached that promises to reshape the future of Walt Disney World . This landmark deal will not only ensure a substantial investment from Disney but also pave the way for a fifth theme park at the iconic resort near Orlando. The agreement, which marks the end of a prolonged period of acrimony, includes assurances and guardrails that will benefit both Disney and the state, after what felt like a lifetime of fighting . Disney has committed to investing up to $17 billion over the next ten to twenty years, a figure that, while previously promised, now comes with a renewed commitment and extended timeframe. The investment is, unsurprisingly, expected to significantly boost Florida's economy, creating thousands of jobs and enhancing tourism.

One of the key points in the agreement is Disney's promise to make an initial capital investment of $8 billion within the first ten years. This investment will go towards existing infrastructure, new construction, and technology upgrades. Additionally, the deal includes a "minimum development" clause, ensuring that Walt Disney World will expand to include at least five major theme parks in Orlando.

Moreover, Disney has secured the flexibility to convert hotel and motel land use entitlements into up to 225,000 square feet of office space within the district. This could potentially revive Disney’s plan to relocate approximately 2,000 Parks, Experiences & Products staffers from California to central Florida, further boosting the local economy.

Disney Is Facing a Battle with Universal

This new agreement is set to replace a favorable 30-year development deal previously signed by a Disney-controlled board. The final vote on the new deal is expected next week, and if approved, it will provide the necessary framework for Disney's ambitious expansion plans. The announcement of the fifth park comes on the heels of Disney securing a revised development agreement with the City of Anaheim for Disneyland . Known as DisneylandForward, this $1.9 billion multi-decade expansion plan aims to create mixed-use environments and new attractions. Additionally, Disney has committed to a staggering $60 billion investment in its parks worldwide over the next ten years.

The timing of Disney's announcement may also be influenced by the upcoming launch of Epic Universe , a $1 billion expansion at Universal Studios Orlando. Set to open next year, Epic Universe represents a significant competitive challenge . Despite this, Disney CEO Bob Iger remains confident, stating that Disney has a sophisticated approach to analysing and meeting the needs of its business. Stay tuned to Collider for more.

World War II veterans travel to France to commemorate 80th anniversary of D-Day

Updated on: June 1, 2024 / 9:10 PM EDT / CBS/AP

More than 60 veterans of World War II took off Friday from Dallas to France, where they will take part in ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The group ranges from 96 to 107 years old, according to American Airlines, which is flying them first to Paris. The flight is one of several that are taking veterans to France for the commemoration.

The group will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery, visit the Eiffel Tower and join in a daily ceremony known as le Ravivage de la Flamme, which honors fallen French service members at the Arc de triomphe.

D-Day 80th Anniversary

They then head to the Normandy region for events that include wreath-laying ceremonies on Omaha and Utah Beaches, two of the landing sites for the Allied forces.

Almost 160,000 Allied troops, 73,000 from the United States, landed at Normandy on June 6, 1944, in a massive amphibious operation designed to break through heavily fortified German defenses and begin the liberation of Western Europe.

A total of 4,415 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself, according to the Necrology Project , including about 2,500 Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded.

The group traveling from Dallas includes six Medal of Honor recipients from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam who wish to honor the World War II veterans.

There are also two Rosie the Riveters, representing women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war.

Hundreds of thousands of military women from Allied nations also worked in crucial noncombat roles such as codebreakers, ship plotters, radar operators and cartographers.

There are various ceremonies to commemorate the day in France and to thank veterans, some of whom will make the long trans-Atlantic journey despite advanced age, fatigue and physical difficulties.

"We will never forget. And we have to tell them," Philippe Étienne, chairman of commemoration organizer Liberation Mission, told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, with only approximately 100,000 American World War II veterans still alive, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is working to preserve their memories.

To reach new generations, the museum sends course programs to schools across the country, and has immersive exhibits like one about the Pacific War.

"I think that story is vital for them in the future," Michael Arvites, a teacher at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, told CBS News. "In a world that is ever changing, that has threats that are new, and some threats that are old."

Steve Ellis served on an invasion landing craft in the Pacific during World War II, and recently shared his stories with seniors from Holy Cross High.

"That first time in combat, do you remember being nervous, or do you feel like your training had prepared you for that moment, or what were your feelings going into that?" one student asked.

"For me, and I think most of my contemporaries, when we're in combat, no — not nervous at all, just doing our jobs," Ellis responded.

— Barry Petersen contributed to this report.
