Possibly The Greatest Crossover Tour in the North

district 15 tours

Before you head out, please check to make sure that the trails are available, using the  OFSC Interactive Trail Guide .

district 15 tours

The Abitibi Canyon Tour located in OFSC District 15 , sits less then 200km from the southern tip of Hudson’s Bay and The Arctic ocean making it the most northern of all the 35 official OFSC sanctioned snow tours . This unique location sets it apart in many ways from the low height of the black spruce trees (thanks to a short growing season) that line many of the trails to the brilliant and abundant sunshine often bathing regions this far north. Sure it’s a decent hike when trailering from The GTA (about 9 hours) but once you’ve arrived it all becomes worth it.

district 15 tours

At 300km The Abitibi Loop is the perfect mid-range length for touring riders looking to rack up some kilometers while still taking in the sights along the way. The primary trail used is A103 most commonly originating in Cochrane, ON and heading in a clock-wise orientation, passing through Smooth Rock Falls and continuing to Abitibi Canyon.

district 15 tours

(Abitibi Canyon Basecamp - Photo by Shelby Mahon) The variety Abitibi offers is second to none and the unique geography of the region allows for this. The west side of A103 known to locals as ‘Piston Alley’ is a wide fast trail often chasing hydro lines, making it critical that you check the weather  and dress accordingly, as any exposed skin at these highway speeds can be prone to frostbite. Believe me it’s no accident that a warm-up stop was made at the most northern point of the loop after riding this section. (It also doubles as a gas station with a large drum of 92-octane gas on hand. There are no other fuel stations in the area so make sure to gas up here!)

Once you reach Abitibi Canyon you’re treated to some epic snowmobiling; Freeriding in the famous canyon through a few feet of powder is something trail riders don’t often get the opportunity to do. Carving fresh lines in the massive bowls of the canyon feels more akin to riding in B.C back-country then Ontario.  Another great attraction offering those social media worthy photos is the Abitibi Canyon Dam (originally built in the 1930’s). I like to frame riders with the dam in the background or if you like epic landscape shots, hop off your sled and photo-bomb the majestic Abitibi River.

district 15 tours

One unique and memorable attraction I strongly recommend checking out when in Cochrane, is the Polar Bear Habitat . This is both the largest, and only human fed care facility in the world dedicated strictly to Polar Bears.  What separates it from other sanctuaries is the 7 hectares of natural wilderness including a large lake that provides the bears with an ice platform for over half the year, giving them the feeling of being in their natural environment.

district 15 tours

Their mission is to take on the bears that wouldn’t make it in the wild otherwise, while offering a place to thrive.  It also acts as first hand education resource to the public on these majestic predators.  While on site you can get an up-close and personal look as they are hand fed by the staff, it was amazing how docile and well behaved a 700kg animal could be as the trainer hand-fed them frozen fish for lunch.

district 15 tours

Another attraction worth a visit while on site is The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders Snowmobile Museum . With 100 vintage sleds on display dating back to the 1950’s, serves up a gold mine of information and history for anyone with an appreciation for the origins of snowmobiles and snowmobiling in the region.

district 15 tours

Going along with the theme of unique, Abitibi Canyon presents a much different lodging experience from the typical hotel, with two options available. The first is called Abitibi Base House located in Smooth Rock Falls. It offers all the creature comforts a touring rider could ask for; equipped to accommodate up to 8 riders with an optional heated garage for sleds, running water, electricity, internet and even satellite TV. These might sound like expected amenities in 2018 but remember where talking about remote northern Ontario!

district 15 tours

The second option is the more rustic but authentic expereince, especially if you’re looking to un-plug from life for a few days. Abitibi Base Camp is located an hour’s drive north of Abitibi Base House (or head north on ‘Piston Alley’ by sled) where a modified trailer awaits you for a one-of-a-kind camping experience. No ‘Glamping’ here; you get a warm bed and a BBQ with power supplied by a generator and that’s it. No Wi-Fi or running water here. What’s the big benefit to staying at Base Camp? It’s proximity to the trails! Located just 2km from A103 makes this a highly desirable option for the die-hard rider who is looking to be on the sled as much as possible not sitting in the truck trailering to locations. Sure the surrounding cities of Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls offer standard hotels, restaurants and fuel but all of those aren’t located in such close proximity to the trail. Regardless of your preference having a few options is great depending on your tastes and what type of ride you’re after.

As I’m writing this it’s late December and we’ve had another green Christmas in Toronto. With the sporadic nature of Ontario winter’s these days having places like The Abitibi Canyon Loop Tour are becoming more of a necessity then a novelty. Cochrane is currently under a snowfall warning yet it’s 10 degrees Celsius here in the city! With such a consistent snow pack year after year It’s not un-common that the riding season up there goes into May and for that reason alone makes it a great option and worth checking out!

We Are Charleston's Best Walking Tour Company

"The historic tour of Charleston was an enjoyable, informative experience. The guide was very knowledgeable on the area and was able to show us some of the more quirky parts of Charleston. She also made a strong effort to ensure there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and answered all of the questions asked. I would recommend this tour!"

"Our walk started at the beautiful city hall building. Amy, our tour guide, was adorably sweet, dressed in all shades of pink and beige from her hat to her boots. She's very very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all of our questions with grace and authority. You can tell she really loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. My husband is so convinced that he now wants to move here. Great job Amy! Thank you for an amazingly insiteful tour."

"Second walking tour of Charleston and I would say amazing. Our guide, Evans, is a born and raised Charleston guy. He knows everything, I actually took notes so I could take my husband on the walk the next day. Good stories. Only one thing is 2 hours is enough by then everyone is brain dead. I would highly recommend this tour, plus he guided several of us to a restaurant with a fabulous lunch, Poogan’s porch."

"I have been on several tours of Charleston, but Amy walked us by and through places I had never been as well as a few of the places other tours include. After finding out where your members were from and their interests, she included information in her tour that touched on those. She also provided a list of favorite places both downtown and in nearby areas. Though we saw many places, I didn’t feel like I was rushed from one place to the next."

The Best Savannah Tours

angel statue in Bonaventure Cemetery

A great way to get to know Savannah, Georgia, is with the aid of someone who lives there and knows the city's history. With the help of traveler reviews and editor analysis, U.S. News selected Savannah's best guided tours, some of which focus on the city's architecture, others on its food and some on its ghostly residents . Whether you're walking through the Historic District or riding a Segway through a storied cemetery, you'll gain an insider's perspective on Savannah's top attractions , culture and folklore on these tours.

Editor’s Pick: Gray Line Savannah – Savannah Land & Sea Tour

Price: Adults from $74; kids from $36 Duration: 3 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Tanvi Chauhan , a travel writer and book author based in Savannah, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Gray Line Savannah – Savannah Land & Sea Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

The combination tour offers an excellent way to both begin and conclude your day in the city. The land tour takes place aboard an open trolley bus, with a driver who also serves as your tour guide. Commencing at the Georgia State Railroad Museum, the tour proceeds through numerous renowned landmarks, including the iconic Forsyth Park , the historic Harper Fowlkes House and the infamous Sorrel-Weed House . You'll also see attractions featured in the New York Times bestseller "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," such as Clary’s Café, and locations from "Forrest Gump," like Chippewa Square. The bus tour covers the historic district and a portion of River Street only. Popular districts like the Plant Riverside District, the newly developed Eastern Wharf and nonhistoric areas like Starland are not included on the tour. Guides are expert narrators with extensive knowledge of historical periods, especially in the Revolutionary War, Civil War and slave trade history. Due to the fast pace from one location to another, not much in-depth information is provided about any given landmark, making it best suited for travelers interested in a general overview.

The boat tour offers a unique perspective of the city skyline compared to the bus tour. Onboard the Georgia Queen, visitors receive a narrated tour by the captain, covering the history of the Savannah River, the Fort Jackson National Monument (which is visible along the route) and a deeper exploration of the Savannah port's economics.

Why we love it:

  • The tour guide may highlight minute details often overlooked in other, more generic tours. Traveling with guide John, for instance, offers casual learning opportunities about Webb Military Museum, the American Legion, the Kessler Mansion, the Gingerbread House, and the Victorian-style Forsyth Animal Hospital, along with amusing anecdotes about Sir Henry Ellis, after whom the Ellis Square is named.
  • While meals are not provided on the boat tour, there is a bar with concessions available on both the inside and outside decks. Plus, opting for the 3:30 p.m. tour increases your chances of spotting dolphins (for free), as they're more active in late afternoon.
  • The optimal way to experience this tour is to begin with a land tour at 9:30 a.m., which concludes at 11 a.m. You can request the driver to drop you off at any point on their loop for lunch at the end of the tour (consider trying the renowned Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, open Monday to Friday only). After lunch, explore the city squares and make your way back to River Street to catch the 3:30 p.m. boat tour. The river tour typically finishes just as River Street and the adjacent Plant Riverside District come alive with live music, seafood restaurants, bars and vibrant activity.

17 Great Things About the 15th Arrondissement of Paris

1. musée bourdelle.

Musee Bourdelle

In the category of hidden Paris gems is this amazing museum seen by few travelers. We'd like to change that. A student of Rodin, sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) created stunning bronze and marble sculptures. You can visit the pleasant gardens and studio where he lived and worked. The garden is full of oversized statues and his unfinished pieces are still in his workshop. Admission is free (you heard that right) plus the line ups are nonexistent. You can thank us later.

Discover what's on when you're here, 2. hotel le marquis eiffel.

Le Marquis Eiffel

Housed in a classic early-20th-century building with high ceilings, Le Marquis Eiffel is completely fitted with modern hotel conveniences and oozing the type of boutique hotel feel that we adore. Located between Champ de Mars and Metro Line 6, you'll find Le Marquis Eiffel only a twelve-minute walk to the Tower. We recommend the Executive Double rooms — they give you more space plus a little table. You always need a place to set your wine glass!

3. Île aux Cygnes – A Paris Secret

Ile aux Cygnes, photo by Mark Craft

This "isle of swans" is best known for the replica of the Statue of Liberty that's located downriver of the Eiffel Tower. The man-made île is also famous for its long, straight running path. Created in the 19th century at the same time the Pont de Grenelle was built, it was intended to protect the bridge from the large barges then plying the Seine. At only 11 metres wide and 850 metres long Île aux Cygnes clocks in as the third largest island in Paris, behind Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis (also a man-made island).

4. pullman paris hotel.

Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel

Only a 4-minute walk away, the Pullman Paris is the closest hotel to the Eiffel Tower. But that's not the only reason to consider staying here. The Pullman Hotel is a modern building with all all of the amenities you expect plus the added benefit of having larger rooms than most small hotels in Paris. And c'mon — the views of the Eiffel Tower can't be beat!

5. The View of Paris from Tour Montparnasse

The View of Paris from Tour Montparnasse, from Wikimedia Commons, by GetFunky

This 56-story skyscraper is often overlooked (a too-tall Paris planning blunder from the past) but the views of Paris from the observation deck are superb. First, you take Europe's fastest elevator (38 seconds) 640 feet above Paris where, on a clear day, you can see for more than 25 miles and spot all the landmarks of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower.

6. rue du commerce.

Rue du Commerce, photo by Mark Craft

This is a lovely, one-way shopping street that runs in the 15th from Boulevard de Grenelle right up to the church of St Jean Baptiste de Grenelle . It's busy all day with local shoppers and there's a lot to do and see. While a number of Parisian chain stores have taken up residence here (like boulangerie Paul ), there are still local businesses to be found, as well as good food shopping.

7. Grenelle Market

Grenelle Market, photo by Diane Shaskin

Along Boulevard de Grenelle at Rue Commerce is where you'll find this lively and popular food market. It runs every Wednesday and Sunday, rain or shine. Rain doesn't really bother shoppers, since the market is set up under the overhead tracks of Metro Line 6. If it's winter, bundle and join local Parisians for one of the better markets in the city.

9. jardin atlantique.

Jardin Atlantique

High up on the roof of Gare Montparnasse is a garden built to commemorate the trains that ran (and still run) from the gare out to Brittany and the Atlantic Ocean. Having a garden here is quite an undertaking when you consider that it is built 55 feet above the train tracks and that the giant concrete tubs that hold soil, plants, and hundreds of trees each weigh…well, we don't know what they weigh, but it's a lot!

Typical of Parisian garden design, there are a number of thematic gardens located in the overall plan (like "aquatic plants" and "grasses moving in the wind") as well as pine trees that are meant to remind us of the coast of Brittany. Visit Jardin Atlantique the next time you're at the gare to meet a train. Located in the 14th & 15th Arrondissements — the boundary line goes right through the center of the jardin

10. Metro Line 6

Eiffel Tower from Metro Line 16, photo by Mark Craft

Line 6 of the Paris Metro starts in the east at Place de la Nation in the 12th Arrondissement, crosses the river, and then in the shape of an arc passes through the southern Left Bank arrondissements — the 13th 14th, and 15th. (Line 6 is mirrored on the Right Bank by Line 2, which arcs from Place de la Nation to Charles-de-Gaulle-Étoile in the west, where it meets up again with Line 6.)

It's in the 15th Arrondissement that Line 6 gets interesting, for that's where it rises above the ground to run on elevated tracks, giving the rider a good overview of this part of this southern quartier . The train ascends from the depths just past station Pasteur and continues in open air all the way to the river, passing over, among other things, the site of the Grenelle Market.

If you stay on board past station Bir Hakeim you cross the Seine, still above ground on a bridge. If you sit on the north side of your Metro car, you'll be able to catch one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower as you speed over the river. (Photograph above from March 2012.)

Our Most Popular Day Trips from Paris

11. parc andré citroën.

Parc Andre Citroen

At the outer extremity of the 15th, running along the Seine, is the modernistic Parc André Citroën. The area is called Javel and it's where bleach used to be made in the 19th century (and the reason "Javel" is a name for bleach). In the 20th century, though (starting in 1915), it was the site of André Citroën's massive automobile manufacturing plant. By 1932 it was the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world.

The plant was closed in the 1970s and the land lay vacant. Then, in the early 1990s, this modernistic park was designed and built on the site. There's tons of open space, modernistic buildings and structures, and a real feeling of a new century. It's unlike any other park in Paris. It's sort of far out (both from central Paris and, you know, "far out"), but a great place for kids to run around. Reach it by riding to Metro Place Balard, at the end of Line 8.

12. Parc Georges Brassens

Parc Georges Brassens

Georges Brassens was a very popular poet/songwriter/singer who played guitar while singing verses from his poems, as well as other poems by well-known French writers (like Victor Hugo). His dark humor and anarchist tendencies didn't stop the city of Paris from naming a park after him in 1984, just a few years after Brassens died.

The site was formerly home to a slaughterhouse and horse market (think horse meat). Residents of the 15th breathed a sigh of relief when these less-than-salubrious neighbors were closed for good in 1979. It wasn't out of civic pride that the land was turned into a park. It turned out that the presence of abandoned limestone quarries made the site unsuitable for the sports complex city planners favored, so a park was built instead.

It ended up being a serendipitously wonderful decision that created a great space for residents of this part of the city. There's a large central pond, lots of trees, a rose garden, and even a medicinal plants garden. Two sculpture bulls flank the main entrance gate as a nod to the site's previous use.

The Highest-Rated Paris Activities

13. promenade de la petite ceinture.

Promenade de la Petite Ceinture

La Petite Ceinture ("little belt") is a railway line built between 1852 and 1869 that circled around Paris in the outer arrondissements. The last passengers rode the train in 1934, although parts of the system were in use for freight transportation up to the 1970s. In the 15th La Petite Ceinture served the Citroën factory (now the location of Parc André Citroën and the slaughterhouses of Vaugirard (now Parc Georges-Brassens ).

After being abandoned for decades, parts of La Petite Ceinture railway line are slowly being turned to other uses. In the 15th Arrondissement the line of the tracks has been turned into a green pedestrian-only walking path running from Rue Balard to Rue Olivier de Serres. The tracks have largely been left in place, but now there are walkways running alongside the tracks or, in a few places, on top of the tracks.

The pathway is less than two kilometres long and there are only a few access points. Perhaps that's why the path is rarely busy – that and the fact that it doesn't really go anywhere yet. There is talk, though, of opening up the tunnel at one end or the other and of directly connecting to the two parks mentioned above.

Perhaps the best walk is to start by spending time at Parc Georges-Brassens then cross Boulevard des Maréchaux to find the promenade access point next to 108 Rue Olivier de Serres. (There are both stairs and an elevator to get you down to track level.) After a pleasant perambulation you reach the end of the line (so to speak) and find yourself on Rue Leblanc (stairs and elevator again) where you're only 2 minutes away from the southeast entrance to Parc André Citroën .

14. Le Cordon Bleu

Le Cordon Bleu

The most well-known cooking institute in Paris, Le Cordon Bleu , has been around since 1895. It's French Cooking Training Central for both professional chefs and interested amateurs. Even though there are now Cordon Bleu locations around the globe, many foreign students still prefer to attend the Paris campus since the city remains the center of things culinary. (There was an American named Julia who attended Cordon Bleu in the 1940s. We hear that she went on to do a few food related things.)

Over the years, Le Cordon Bleu has moved around in Paris. It once was located on Rue du Champ de Mars, near the Eiffel Tower (where Julia Child attended classes), then in 1988 moved to Rue Léon Delhomme, in the 15th (where we once attended classes). In 2016 the cooking school moved again to a sparkling modern building on the banks of the Seine, also in the 15th. There are over 40,000 square feet of classrooms, training kitchens, wine cellars, and display areas. We think Julia would be pleasantly surprised.

M.S. 51 in Park Slope is one of the most selective middle schools in District 15.

Before District 15 implemented a lottery-based system for middle school admissions, M.S. 51 in Park Slope selected students based on grades and other measures. (Patrick Wall / Chalkbeat)

A Brooklyn middle school integration plan shows some patterns are hard to break

Charlie Tolan’s offer letter for sixth grade, a seat at Charles O. Dewey Middle School, initially left him deeply disappointed.

It was 2019, the first year his Brooklyn district removed selective admissions in favor of a lottery. None of his friends from P.S. 10 in south Park Slope had been matched to the school in Sunset Park, and he understood it had a “bad reputation” in his community. State test scores were lower than at the schools he preferred, and there were rumors of discipline problems.

But Charlie’s attitude, and his family’s, changed when September rolled around. He quickly made friends, he liked his teachers, and he found the classes engaging and just the right level of challenge, said his mom, Lisa Raymond-Tolan.

Charlie, now in ninth grade, was in the inaugural class of the New York City education department’s effort to better integrate District 15’s middle schools through overhauling admissions. The process came after years of parent advocacy but was also met with trepidation from some families. Still, Charlie didn’t see himself as a participant in some kind of virtuous social equity experiment.

“Charlie just got absorbed into Dewey,” his mother said. “It’s not like there were all these diversity and inclusion things happening overtly at the school. It was just middle school—and that’s what it should be.”

The district’s middle schools now enroll a more demographically mixed group of children than they had before. The share of low-income students at most of the schools has shifted closer to the average figure across the district (though shifts in some schools have been larger than in others). But some diversity advocates suggest that’s just the first step.

“It’s not just about moving bodies,” said Lena Dalke, a school integration advocate at New York Appleseed who works with middle school student activists. It’s about “how to create welcoming spaces in all schools for all students.”

Now, proponents of the District 15 plan—including educators, advocates, parents and students—are considering what happens after a school becomes more racially, ethnically, and economically mixed, and how to foster schools that are supportive of students and families from different backgrounds.

What has worked and what hasn’t in District 15’s plan, which took effect for rising sixth graders in the 2019-20 school year, might be worth a closer look as many other districts across the city recently announced they are dropping selective admissions for next year’s incoming students after a two-year pandemic-related pause on screens for all middle schools. Ten of the city’s 32 districts with schools that previously selected students based on grades or other measures opted to ditch screens, though unlike District 15, few of them had explicit diversity goals with seats set aside for certain children.

One outcome is evident as the students in District 15’s first class of the diversity initiative have gone on to high school this year: Attitudes about schools have begun to change in some corners of Brooklyn, but other patterns around the desirability of certain schools remain hard to break.

For Raymond-Tolan, Dewey offered “a tremendous amount of support” when her son needed help with social concerns; she found the principal, Amanda Bueno, to be “truly amazing.”

Over the past two years, she and Charlie represented Dewey at Park Slope forums for fifth graders and their parents considering their middle school options. Their attendance was itself evidence of a change: “I don’t think Dewey would have been even invited in years past,” Raymond-Tolan said. “I do think there was a shift in the narrative, that Dewey is a good place to go.”

A quick turnaround in a highly segregated district

District 15, which runs from Boerum Hill to Sunset Park, is one of the most racially and economically diverse in the city, but its schools have also been segregated . At M.S. 447 in Boerum Hill, about 27% of students were from low-income families in the 2018-19 school year; at Sunset Park’s Dewey, the share was 93%.

Geography accounts for some of that, as families from more affluent and whiter neighborhoods like Park Slope and Windsor Terrace favored nearby schools, and lower-income and immigrant families living in the south part of the district clustered in Dewey and Sunset Park Prep.

But advocates for equity in education say that academic screens were a significant factor: All but one of the 11 schools in the district used screens in their admissions decisions, and students from families with fewer resources were far more likely to be excluded from well-resourced, sought-after schools due to missing the necessary grade  and test score cutoffs.

Under the new system, middle schools would no longer use screens such as grades, state test scores, auditions, or attendance records to select sixth graders. Instead, admissions would be by lottery, and priority would be given to students who were English language learners, low-income, or lived in temporary housing, with a goal of filling 52% of spots in each school with priority applicants (matching the ratio of families in the district who qualified for free or reduced-price lunch). In lively public meetings, some parents argued that retaining screens ensured a merit-based process; others suggested that affluent families needed to stop hoarding privilege.

Resistance to the diversity initiative trickled down to some students as well. Melanie Rosas-Reyes, now an 11th grade activist with IntegrateNYC from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, first heard about the plan from classmates at their well-resourced middle school in Boerum Hill who opposed the idea. Implementing a lottery instead of screening applicants, these students reasoned, would reduce the chances their high-performing younger siblings would get their top choice.

“The idea of meritocracy, that some students deserve certain things because they worked hard—it was really harmful for me to internalize that,” Melanie said. “I would have appreciated having a wider frame, because I was just hearing what privileged people thought about the admissions plan, and not the people who would benefit from it,” such as children from families like hers in Sunset Park.

When admissions results were released in 2019, even advocates of the plan were surprised by the results: Nine of the 11 middle schools reached the planners’ target range of 40% to 75% of offers to low-income students, up from four schools the year before, according to education department data.

In 2018, the last year when screens were used, just 16% of offers to M.S. 442 in Windsor Terrace went to priority group children. In 2019, the first lottery year, the rate jumped to 52%. In the south end of the district, at Dewey, 91% of offers went to students in the priority group in 2018; in 2019, that number fell to 67%.

“The plan had a big impact on the composition of schools,” said Adam Lubinsky, managing principal at WXY Studio, the urban planning firm that helped design the new system. “It was really encouraging to see.”

Across the district, economic segregation in sixth grade decreased by 55% and racial segregation decreased by 38% compared with the previous year.

‘No quick fixes’ in building inclusive school communities

The proponents of the District 15 diversity plan understood that redistributing students among the 11 district middle schools would not be the end of the job. (This year a 12th middle school opened in the district.)

“As hard as that demographic shifting piece is, it is relatively easy compared to the inclusion and equity work,” notes Carrie McClaren, who served as a parent representative on the working group for the diversity plan. “There are no quick fixes, unfortunately.”

That proved true for some students who were in the minority at their new schools. Melina Mays made the long commute from her home in Red Hook to Sunset Park Prep, which she had ranked first on her application, impressed on the tour by the warmth of the principal and the enthusiasm of the students. But Melina, who was one of just a handful of Black students in her class, encountered hostility from a group of boys who harassed her and her friend with racial slurs. Although the school did contact the ringleader’s parents, according to Melina, she says the behavior continued. (Sunset Park Prep did not respond to a request for comment.)

Neither Melina nor her mother, Dorothy Mays, felt the school community was especially welcoming to people from “outside.” Because Melina had injured her foot, Mays took her daughter to and from school during her eighth-grade year, but she rarely interacted with other parents when she was there. “The person I spoke to the most was the school crossing guard,” she said. Mays says she understood there was often a language barrier — some of the parents did not speak fluent English, and she doesn’t speak Spanish — but she added, “They really need to work on making you feel welcome.”

Mays summed up her thoughts on her daughter’s middle school years: “I hope other people have a better experience than she did. And that they really work on diversifying the whole school system.”

The planners had outlined an ambitious range of proposals to reinforce the diversity plan, including an ethnic studies curriculum, the hiring of more teachers of color and bilingual school counselors, attention to racially disproportionate suspension rates, and collaboration among PTAs to encourage “cross-cultural community building.”

But then came the pandemic, which sent the first cohort of the diversity initiative home to learn by Zoom in the spring of their sixth-grade year. The challenges of remote learning, and then of recalibrating for in-person classes, consumed educators, parents, and students for the next two years.

Some diversity support programs did get under way: The D15 Community Education Council arranged for implicit bias training for principals and assistant principals, and created an “equity team” in each middle school, composed of “teachers, parents, and anyone at the school who wants to participate in creating a welcoming school environment,” Camille Casaretti, D15’s CEC president, wrote in an email.

Some middle schools organized events to highlight diversity. One had a “peace and diversity day,” for example, and another recently held a Latinx Heritage Teach-in.

Now that the new school year has begun with some semblance of normalcy, plans are in the works to “identify inequities in resources and program offerings” among schools and to address those inequities, Casaretti wrote.

Students have also taken an interest in advancing conversations around diversity. With the help of Dalke, from Appleseed, and Sarah Stone, a middle school coach from IntegrateNYC, students formed Integrate clubs in each middle school, which provide a hub to discuss topics such as building relationships and restorative justice. The clubs from different schools also meet up to share perspectives. For one such meeting, the students visited Park Slope Collegiate, the only school in the district where students must enter through metal detectors, and discussed why the scanners might make some people feel targeted or fearful rather than safe.

‘All good schools’ but some still have more high-needs students

Four years ago, when families were first grappling with the new admissions system, “there was apprehension from parents about applying to or attending schools that were unfamiliar,” said Nyah Berg, Appleseed’s executive director.

Nevertheless, fifth graders that first year placed many more schools on their lists than their older peers had in previous years, and that trend has continued. “Students and parents were looking around the district a lot more,” said Lubinsky at WXY, rather than treading the same worn paths to the same few familiar schools. “That was really healthy for the district.”

Berg also believes attitudes have changed: “One parent said we used to have three ‘good schools’ and now we know they are all good schools.”

The application data back that up: More white families are applying to Sunset Park Prep and Dewey, and more immigrant families are applying to the schools that historically enrolled a large majority of white students, according to Dalke.

Nevertheless, some patterns of segregation have persisted. At Dewey, the share of offers that went to low-income students has crept up again after the initial decrease to 67%. Last year, 86% of offers went to children in the priority group, according to data shared by the district’s Community Education Council.

In the 2021-22 school year, nearly 90% of children at Dewey and Sunset Park Prep were living in poverty, according to DOE records — less than before the lottery but still well above the other District 15 schools.

Breaking those patterns, it seems, requires more than a lottery that gives a boost to historically marginalized students: It requires affluent families who recognize the value of a small, nurturing school like Dewey or Sunset Park, and who are willing to ignore entrenched assumptions about what a “good school” really means, advocates said.

Raymond-Tolan, the Dewey parent, has revised her own thoughts in that regard, in comparing the experiences of Charlie to that of her older son, who had attended M.S. 51, in Park Slope, which positioned itself as a school for academically gifted students.

“Is the school going to take care of my kid and help them when they need it, whether academically or socially?” Raymond-Tolan wrote in an email.  “At Dewey, they knew Charlie well and were there for him — and us — when we needed it.”

WXY has begun an evaluation of how well the District 15 diversity initiative is working so far, which may illuminate why some habits and attitudes have been resistant to change.

With about a third of the city’s districts deciding to embrace lottery admissions, advocates and planners involved with District 15’s initiative will be watching closely.

“It’ll be interesting to see how these other districts respond,” Lubinsky said. “District 15 has been a useful precedent.”

Old Arbat District: the Art Quarter

Holidays are bright and colourful, we all love them because they form a ray of light amongst the grey monotony of the daily grind. Arbat is a real street-holiday, where it is always noisy and fun: people meet, walk, watch the performances of talented street artists with clowns, singers and dancers strutting their stuff. Right on the pavement, artists proudly exhibit their works.

There is a very special atmosphere here that has long attracted representatives of the creative intelligentsia. L. Tolstoy and S. Yesenin, A. Pushkin and his young wife N. Goncharov, A. Blok and B. Pasternak are fondly remembered by the hallowed paving stones along Arbat. It is of no surprise that the heroes of the famous novel ‘War and Peace’ were ‘registered’.

We would like to invite you to take a walk with us along the historic Old Arbat! We will talk about the history and architecture of the most romantic street in Moscow.

  • You will hear a lot of interesting facts about the grand houses that were located here and their wealthy residents.
  • You will learn how a once inexpensive inn for carriage drivers has since turned into one of the best restaurants in the capital!
  • You will see the famous house where A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova spent their honeymoon and stand at the wall dedicated to the memory of post punk/new wave icon Viktor
  • You will be carried away down the beautiful side streets such as: Bolshaya Afanasyevsky, Nikolopeskovsky, Filippovsky, Krivoarbatsky. In a bygone era, these streets were part of Arbat and were bustling with its spirit.

B.Okudzhava dedicated some of his lyrical poems to Arbat, his favourite street from childhood. A. Rybakov, author of the famous novel ‘Children of the Arbat’ also lived here. There is also a little corner of Bulgakov's Moscow on Arbat - the former Torgsin store (now the ‘The Seventh Continent’), where the novel ‘The Master and Margarita’ unfolded.

Every house on Arbat is a piece of history, and we will dive into this history head first.

Sorensen Requests Millions to Support Local Projects

Sorensen Requests Millions to Support Local Projects

Sorensen Submitted Fifteen Requests Totaling Over $242 Million to Fund Local Projects as Congress Works to Fund the Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) is requesting funding for 15 local projects that will benefit Illinois families as Congress works to fund the government.

“We have such a special way of life here in Central and Northwestern Illinois,” said Sorensen . “And if we want to make our region sustainable for future generations, we need to make investments now that will support our region’s growth. These fifteen local projects that I am requesting funding for from Congress will bring clean water to communities that need it, invest in our infrastructure, and support our first responders. As your trusted voice in Washington, I will never stop fighting to bring hard-earned tax dollars back home to make our neighborhoods safer and healthier.”

The Community Project Funding process allows members of Congress to request funds for critical initiatives in the communities they represent. Sorensen requested the following projects be included in FY2025 spending bills:

CENTRAL ILLINOIS

STEM Education at Illinois State University: Sorensen is requesting $15 million in appropriations to construct a new state-of-the-art STEM building for Illinois State University (ISU) in Normal. This project will allow ISU to better prepare, grow, and retain the next generation of STEM workers in Central Illinois.

“Illinois State University is grateful for Congressmen Sorensen’s support of the University and the STEM building project. A new STEM facility at Illinois State University will serve as a core resource for science education, which is essential for supporting enrollment geared to workforce development, including engineering, nursing, and data science. A new facility will replace aging facilities and improve accessibility in our laboratory classrooms and teaching greenhouse.  Such an investment in Illinois State University will provide essential facilities for STEM education, foster local and regional economic development, and develop well-trained students seeking a STEM-based career in the growing regional and state economy,” s aid Aondover Tarhule, President, Illinois State University.

Flood Prevention Infrastructure for City of Bloomington: Sorensen is requesting $4,614,000 for the City of Bloomington to upgrade its stormwater infrastructure to prevent flooding in homes and businesses. The project will relocate existing stormwater pipes to make room for three new stormwater basins, which collect stormwater and slowly release it at a controlled rate to avoid overflow. The project will also separate a combined sewer.

“Representative Sorensen's commitment to securing federal funding for our stormwater improvement project is invaluable. This initiative is crucial for enhancing our infrastructure and mitigating the impact of increasingly severe weather events on our community. His support will help us protect our residents and properties from the damaging effects of flooding,” said Mboka Mwilambwe, Mayor, City of Bloomington.

Roadway Infrastructure Improvements in Peoria: To increase safety and reduce traffic at the intersection of West Northmoor Road and North University Street, Sorensen is requesting $1.6 million to make critical infrastructure upgrades. Funding for this project will add dedicated right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes, and signals would be moved out of the islands to remove the hazard from the clear zone on University Street. New sidewalks and a multiuse path will provide pedestrian and bicycle access to accommodate the neighborhoods and multiple schools along the Northmoor corridor.

“Securing funding for the Northmoor and University Street intersection ensures that our infrastructure is resilient for the future and provides safety and efficiency for the 55,000 motorists who traverse this intersection daily,” said Rita Ali, Mayor, City of Peoria.

Wastewater Upgrades for City of Elmwood: Sorensen is requesting $1 million for the City of Elmwood to protect its waterways from contamination by sewage, ensuring more reliable wastewater treatment and water access for families. The investment will be used to clean sludge out of the Elmwood’s wastewater lagoon’s ponds and upgrade the wastewater system’s existing rock filter.

“We are honored and grateful to be able to work together with Rep. Sorensen on this Community Funding Project. These requested funds for the City of Elmwood wastewater lagoon upgrade are a great benefit and would have a huge financial impact for our community. The City of Elmwood will benefit not only immediately but generationally. The Community Project Funding request would allow us to prevent issuing bonds, raising water and sewer rates, or raising property taxes for our community. This partnership shows Rep. Sorensen and the City of Elmwood’s commitment to the community, financially and environmentally,” said John Hulslander, Mayor, City of Elmwood.

“We are honored and grateful for the requested funding for the City of Elmwood, which would enable us to undertake crucial lagoon restoration work. This project underscores our shared commitment to preserving the ecological health and meeting or exceeding the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's requirements.” said Nathan Brunnelson, Alderman, Chair of Water/Sewer Committee, City of Elmwood. “The allocated funds would facilitate essential upgrades and restorations aimed at improving water quality within and exiting the lagoon.”

Water Infrastructure Improvement for Village of South Pekin: Sorensen is requesting $4,960,000 in funding to replace water mains throughout the community of South Pekin. Upgrading mains throughout the community will remove current levels of manganese and eliminate the associated health risks currently exposed to the community.

“The Village of South Pekin is greatly appreciative of Representative Sorensen and the House Appropriations Committee for taking up our request for funding, which will go a long way to help South Pekin achieve the goal of installing filtering, replacing water mains, and replacing the lead pipes and/or fixtures from the curb to the resident's dwelling. The Village of South Pekin and its residents extend their thanks,” said Eric Stout, Mayor, Village of South Pekin.

Water Infrastructure for the Village of Maquon: To ensure smaller communities in Central Illinois don’t get left behind, Sorensen is requesting $720,000 for the Village of Maquon to upgrade its wastewater treatment facility. This investment will allow the community to have a more resilient wastewater treatment system that is compliant with EPA standards, while lowering costs for families and seniors living in the village.

"The Village of Maquon is thrilled to have our project selected by Congressman Sorensen! Our wastewater plant is need of major improvements and maintenance, and this funding would help us avoid imposing a significant rate increase on our residents. This is really a huge deal for us," said Mark Thomas, President, Village of Maquon.

WESTERN ILLINOIS

Upgrades to Rock Island Wastewater Treatment Plant: Sorensen is requesting $10 million for the City of Rock Island to repair, improve, and update various piping, equipment, and infrastructure at the Mill Street Wastewater Treatment Plant. The investment will improve the plant’s ability to treat wastewater efficiently, increase treatment capacity, reduce operational costs, and improve the plant’s resilience and sustainability.

“The Mill Street Wastewater Treatment Plant requires essential repairs and improvements to continue to keep costs down and provide quality wastewater services to the residents of Rock Island for generations to come,” said Mayor Mike Thoms. “Wastewater infrastructure is vital to the daily operations of municipalities. We are grateful to the federal government and Congressman Sorensen for supporting projects like these, which provide crucial upgrades needed to ensure our communities remain healthy, vibrant and sustainable places to live and work."

Clean Drinking Water for East Moline Families: Sorensen is requesting $800,000 for East Moline to upgrade its water treatment system so it can continue to provide drinkable water to households for years to come. The funding will achieve this by repairing a clearwell, which is a critical tool used to disinfect drinking water during the last stage of the drinking water purification process.

“As the Mayor of East Moline, I am committed to ensuring the reliability and sustainability of our community's water supply. Our aging Water Treatment Plant's concrete clearwell has developed some significant cracks which compromise the integrity of the structure and, if not addressed, could compromise the reliability of our potable water system. With federal funding through the diligent efforts of Congressman Sorensen, we could finally address this issue. This project is not just about maintenance; it's about safeguarding our community's public health and ensuring a sustainable water supply for years to come. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Congressman Sorensen for his continued support and commitment to East Moline,” said Reggie Freeman, Mayor, City of East Moline.

Training Tower for Sauk Valley Firefighters: To give first responders the tools and training they need to keep families safe, Sorensen is requesting $1.5 million for the Rock Falls Fire Department to construct a new training tower for use by the department and other local departments in the region.

“These Federal Dollars will be used by Sauk Valley firefighters for community fire training at the Rock Falls facility,” said Rodney Kleckler, Mayor, City of Rock Falls.

Water Tower for Coal Valley: Sorensen is requesting $3,440,000 for the Village of Coal Valley to construct a new water tower to better provide families with reliable water access. The project replaces aging infrastructure and ensures Coal Valley is compliant with state health and environmental requirements.

“The Village of Coal Valley is deeply appreciative and honored to be considered for funding by Representative Sorensen as part of the appropriations process. This essential infrastructure project would not be able to move forward without Representative Sorensen's assistance in fighting for this crucial funding source,” said Mike Bartels, President, Village of Coal Valley .

Sewer Upgrades for City of Silvis: Sorensen is requesting $3.4 million to allow the City of Silvis to upgrade its outdated sewer infrastructure. Current sewer lines have served the community for over a century, but are now prone frequent leaks, blockages, and structural failures. The project bolsters the city’s resilience against flooding and storm surges and minimizes disruptions to essential services.

“The replacement of the century-old sewer lines on 7th Street and 3rd Street in Silvis is not just a matter of infrastructure maintenance; it is an investment in the future of Silvis and its residents. By securing funding for this critical project, we have the opportunity to create lasting positive impacts in the realms of public health, environmental sustainability, community resilience, and economic development. Together, let us renew Silvis and build a stronger, more vibrant future for generations to come,” said Matt Carter, Mayor, City of Silvis.

Sewer Upgrades for Macomb: To reduce the impacts of flooding and storms on the community of Macomb, Sorensen is working to deliver $1.6 million to upgrade sewer and stormwater infrastructure. The proposed project will be used to replace 2,668 linear feet of old vitrified clay pipe with new polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, ensuring resiliency of the city’s stormwater system and reducing the impacts of flooding on homes and businesses for years to come. When old infrastructure leads to overflow, it pours into basements, causing homeowners to pay for removing the water and property damage.

"This storm sewer project will greatly improve stormwater drainage in the southwest part of the City of Macomb. If approved, the money would remedy a decades long drainage issue in our city. We are grateful to Congressman Sorensen for submitting our request and look forward to it getting approved," said Michael Inman, Mayor, City of Macomb.

Infrastructure Improvements along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers: The Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP) is a historic bipartisan, interstate river infrastructure initiative that Sorensen has been a strong advocate for since entering Congress. Sorensen and a bipartisan group of colleagues are working to secure $187 million to support NESP and upgrade outdated locks along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. By upgrading locks, river navigation becomes more efficient, bringing Illinois’ goods to market faster, and boosting the regional economy.

"Illinois corn and soybean farmers thank Rep. Sorensen for continuing his strong support for the inland waterways. Ours river system is an efficient and sustainable means to move our commodities that also improves congestion on our interstate road network. Continued access to the waterways provides a competitive advantage that helps our farmers meet markets across the globe, " said Andrew Larson, Director of Government Relations, Illinois Soybean Association.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS

Water Infrastructure Upgrades for Rockford: Sorensen is requesting $3 million for Rockford to upgrade critical water infrastructure that is currently at risk of failure. The project will replace more than two miles of outdated water main and lead service lines along the Auburn Street corridor from Central Avenue to Main Street, bringing clean water to nearby neighborhoods.

“I am very thankful for the staunch advocacy of Congressman Sorensen, who has helped us secure federal funding for a number of key initiatives over the past two years,” said Tom McNamara, Mayor, City of Rockford. “The most recent funding would allow us to replace more than two miles of high-risk water infrastructure. This project is part of a much larger investment that will reconstruct and revitalize an important corridor on the west side of Rockford.”

Water Infrastructure Upgrades for Freeport: Sorensen is working to secure $3.6 million for Freeport strengthen its water infrastructure to better connect neighborhoods to reliable water access. Funds from this project will replace water mains in the neighborhoods that need it most, where existing infrastructure is currently in poor condition.

“The City of Freeport thanks Congressman Sorensen for requesting funds in CPF FY25 appropriations for our water main replacement project. This significant funding will allow the City to replace miles of aging water main infrastructure to complement our Street Replacement projects. The water main project funding will allow Freeport to strengthen its infrastructure foundation to support existing residential and commercial customers. Thank you, Congressman Sorensen, for your genuine concern for all of our constituents,” said Jodi Miller, Mayor, City of Freeport.

Congressman Eric Sorensen serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.

15-year-old to make PGA Tour debut after success on Korn Ferry Tour

Having made history by making the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event, a high school freshman is getting the call to the big leagues.

Miles Russell, 15, accepted a sponsor exemption for the Rocket Mortgage Classic later this month. That has him set to become one of the youngest players to ever compete on the PGA Tour.

“Ever since I first started playing golf,” Russell said in a statement Monday, “my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players, and I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”

A native of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Russell added that he was “thankful” to the Detroit-based tournament’s title sponsor for giving him the opportunity to make his debut at golf’s highest level.

It’s the next step in what has already been an impressive career in the sport for Russell, who last year became the youngest boy to earn player of the year recognition from the American Junior Golf Association, besting a mark set more than three decades earlier by Tiger Woods.

Russell’s feat on the Korn Ferry Tour came at an event in April. Playing in his home state at the Suncoast Classic, Russell opened with rounds of 68 and 66 to become the youngest player to make a cut on that circuit. He broke a record set in 2006 by Gipper Finau, the younger brother of PGA Tour standout Tony Finau.

Assuming he tees off at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Russell won’t be the youngest to do so on the PGA Tour. That status is still held by Michelle Wie West, who was 14 years 3 months 4 days old when she used a sponsor exemption to play in the 2004 Sony Open, where she barely missed the cut .

The youngest boy to play in a PGA Tour event was 14-year-old Guan Tianlang at the 2013 Masters, where he made the cut . Per the PGA Tour, older 14-year-olds who also made their tour debuts at that age include Andy Zhang (2012 U.S. Open) and Lorens Chan (2009 Sony Open). Russell will join a list of 15-year-old PGA Tour debutantes that includes John Oda (2012 Sony Open), Tadd Fujikawa (2006 U.S. Open) and, going back to the 1957 Canadian Open, Bob Panasik.

Russell, who finished tied for 20th at the Korn Ferry event, will seek to become the youngest PGA Tour player to make a cut since Guan at the 2013 Zurich Classic. Last month, a pair of 16-year-olds, Kris Kim (at the Byron Nelson) and Blades Brown (at the Myrtle Beach Classic) made cuts on the tour.

The recently completed U.S. Women’s Open saw a 15-year-old girl, Asterisk Talley , make the cut and appear near the top of the leader board before she finished tied for 44th.

“Miles exemplifies the future of golf, and our tournament is the perfect stage for young talent to shine,” Rocket Mortgage executive Casey Hurbis said of Russell in a statement Monday.

Russell also has accepted a sponsor exemption to play in another PGA Tour event, the Bermuda Championship, in November. In a qualifying tournament Monday for this year’s U.S. Open, he shot even par over two rounds, performing better than accomplished veterans such as Harold Varner III and Russell Knox but still falling three shots short of possibly making that field.

Former Fresno Sleep Clinic Owner Sentenced to 46 Months in Prison for Submitting Over $1.5 Million in Fraudulent Claims for Sleep Studies to Medicare and Medi-Cal

FRESNO, Calif. — Jeremy Gober, 43, of Hanford, was sentenced to 46 months in prison Wednesday for committing health care fraud and aggravated identity theft, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

According to court documents, Gober co-owned and co-operated Got Sleep Inc., which operated sleep clinics in Fresno and Orange Counties. Sleep clinics perform diagnostic sleep studies to identify disorders like sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

From August 2016 through July 2020, Jeremy Gober caused Got Sleep to submit thousands of claims to Medicare and Medi-Cal for sleep studies that were not actually performed on patients.  The claims also falsely stated that the patients had been referred for the sleep studies by physicians with whom Jeremy Gober had previously worked. This was done because Medicare and Medi-Cal will not pay for a sleep study unless the patient was referred by a physician. Gober caused more than $1.5 million in fraudulent claims to be submitted and $587,000 to be paid out by Medicare and Medi-Cal.

On March 11, 2024, Jeremy Gober’s brother, Travis Gober, was sentenced to 19 months in prison for his conviction in a similar health care fraud and aggravated identity theft scheme related to other sleep clinics in the Central Valley.

This case was the product of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the California Department of Health Care Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton prosecuted the case.

Miles Russell, 15, to play Rocket Mortgage Classic

Change Text Size

Miles Russell already has finished in the top 25 of a Korn Ferry Tour event. Now he is preparing to play on the PGA TOUR.

He’s just 15.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic announced Monday that it has given Russell a sponsor exemption into the PGA TOUR’s annual stop in Detroit. The tournament will be played June 27-30 at Detroit Golf Club.

Russell has quickly established himself as one of golf’s top up-and-coming prospects. He won both the Junior PGA Championship and Junior PLAYERS Championship in 2023, then became the youngest player to ever be named the American Junior Golf Association’s Player of the Year. Tiger Woods is the only other player to win the award before turning 16.

This year, Russell became the youngest player to ever make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour and just the second player under the age of 16 to make a cut on either the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour (Tianlang Guan is the other).

Russell eventually finished T20 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Lecom Suncoast Classic, shooting 68-66-70-66.

Russell will be among the youngest players ever to make their debut on the PGA TOUR. The record belongs to Michelle Wie West, who was granted a sponsor exemption to play in the 2004 Sony Open at the age of 14 years, 3 months and 4 days. Wie West also became the fourth woman to play a TOUR event. Guan (2013 Masters), Andy Zhang (2012 U.S. Open) and Lorens Chan (2009 Sony Open) also debuted at 14 years old. Other 15-year-olds to play TOUR events have included John Oda (2012 Sony Open), Tadd Fujikawa (2006 U.S. Open) and Bob Pasanik (1957 Canadian Open).

One of golf’s potential future stars will be making his PGA Tour debut this month in Detroit.

Miles Russell, 15, will compete in the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club under a sponsor’s exemption, the tournament announced on Monday.

The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic will be held June 27-30.

“The Rocket Mortgage Classic is known as a tournament where ‘future stars start,’ and we’re thrilled to have Miles make his PGA Tour debut here and add to that legacy,” RMC director Jason Langwell said in a statement. “He has proved with his many accomplishments at such a young age that he belongs, and we are excited to see Miles compete alongside the world’s best golfers here at Detroit Golf Club.”

Russell, a high school freshman from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, cemented his status as one of golf’s best young players when he made the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event, the LECOM Suncoast Classic, in April.

That performance came after he won the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots last August and won AJGA Player of the Year honors. In doing so, he topped Tiger Woods to become the youngest player to win that honor.

Russell was given one of four sponsors exemptions into the tournament, which was won by Rickie Fowler last year.
