Travel Tips and Tricks

Useful articles for traveling, 10 best european cities to visit in winter.

#1 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: A winter visit to Rome may have you bundling up to see iconic sights like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain, but you'll have ample opportunities to warm up, too. Head indoors to admire Michelangelo's famous Sistine Chapel frescoes before sampling some of the city's world-renowned pizza and wine.

#2 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: The charms of Paris are alive and well in winter. Warm up while sipping coffee in romantic cafes, and spend time visiting heated indoor museums like the Musée du Louvre, the Musée Rodin or the Musée d'Orsay, which are less crowded this time of year.

#3 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: Prague's castles and underground restaurants are perfect spots to seek refuge from the city's harsh winters. For those willing to brave the cold, there are also festive options like Prague's beloved Christmas markets and outdoor ice skating rinks.

#4 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: Winter is Venice, Italy's low season. Although you'll still find many visitors during this time of year, you can expect lines to be shorter and airfare and hotel rates to be cheaper. If you visit in January and February, you'll witness the exciting festivities of Carnevale.

#5 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: Winters in Amsterdam can be chilly, but those willing to endure the cold will enjoy significantly discounted hotel rooms and flights. Most of Amsterdam's attractions are open year-round, and during the winter months, the city offers holiday festivities and many places to ice skate.

#6 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: Vienna welcomes winter with advent markets, public ice skating rinks and plenty of lavish parties. Add wintry touches like snow-covered rooftops and nearby ski slopes into the mix and you'll find yourself in a European winter wonderland.

#7 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: This French port city's winters may not be filled with snow, but its cool weather and popular Christmas market help set the scene for the holidays. And no visit would be complete without sampling some of the region's world-renowned vino at one of downtown's wine bars.

#8 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: In Spain's Andalucía province, summer temperatures can be hot to the point of unbearable. Reserve Seville for a winter escape to experience its Old World ambiance and charming seasonal traditions (think: nativity scenes and holiday markets) while enjoying cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and lower hotel rates.

#9 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: If you like the idea of beautiful castles, cathedrals and other Baroque architecture covered in snow, one look at Salzburg, Austria, might be enough to lure you in. Add in Christmas bazaars and nearby skiing destinations, and you'll likely be sold on vacationing in this charming city.

#10 in Best Winter Vacations in Europe

Why go: You'll definitely need to don cold weather attire for a wintertime trip to Germany's trendiest city, but the snow-lined streets and rooftops are eye-catching. Not only will you save on lodging, but you'll have the chance to experience Berlin's lively open-air Christmas markets.

My 10 Best Travel Tips After 30 Years of Traveling the World

#1 - Travel Insurance.  No one ever wants to have a bad vacation, or plans on loosing their luggage.  Travel insurance can literally be life saving.  Ask  your travel agent about plans for your next trip.

#2 - Alert Your Bank and Credit Card Company of Your Travel Plans

This is a great habit to get into if you don’t want your credit card company or bank to put a hold on your card while you are overseas.

#3 - Store important documents in the clouds.  This can be everything from Passport information, to your complete travel itinerary.  If you ever loose your documents, or even your cell, your documents will always be just a few clicks away from any computer!

#4 - Global Entry.  If you travel a lot, and dislike waiting in security lines then Global Entry is for you.  Once you have completed the application and qualified, you will always be PSA pre-checked for all domestic and International flights.  You will also be fast-tracked through immigration for International arrival.  Once you have experienced this service, you will never look back at waiting in line!

https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry

#5 - Ask The Locals!

We always ask the locals to point us to the best restaurants, awesome spots to watch the sunset, the best coffee shops, etc.  Another great resource are Fire departments, and they are global.  The crew knows the area (it's their job), and they know the best things to do as well as places to eat.  Best of all, the love to help!

#6 - Let Someone at Home Know Your Plans. This is extremely important when traveling solo, but it’s still a good idea no matter how many people are in your travel group.  This person may also be listed on your travel insurance.  Having a point person at home is always a great idea.

#7 - Beware of Free Public WIFI

I always try to avoid logging into bank accounts or entering any passwords while I’m using free public WIFI at a place like an airport. I’m not as strict about it once I’ve gotten to my hotel, especially if they have a password for their wifi.  I recommend always using a VPN at home or traveling!

#8 - Put your Hotel Address and phone number in Your Phone.  This way if you are ever lost, you will always make it back to your hotel.

#9 - Enquire about the price BEFORE You Take Public Transportation.  If you are already used to using app's like Uber or Bolt where you see the price BEFORE you agree to book a ride, then do the same no matter where you are at.

#10 - Put Electronics, Medications, Toothbrush, and an Extra Pair of Underwear in Your Carry-on.

A few important items should always go in your carry-on. A swimsuit is also a good idea if you are going on a beach vacation. You can buy most of these things if your bag gets lost, but having them in your carry-on will save you money and time if your luggage gets lost in transit.

We booked a trip for six to Maui and when it came time to the trip try to check in we were told by Hawaiian Airlines it wasn't a regular trip and we couldn't check in and we had to go to the airport several hours early to check in.. TA advised arrive at the airport two hours in advance even though security only required one hour just so we could check in- no help!! Also we were charged $800 for Insurance that I never had requested didn't see and would never have ever paid for- Of course my fault for not looking in the details because I was super busy working Went there four times to pick up our tickets and they were closed Guess the time of the travel agent is no longer meaningful/ worth it?

i have used EDH Travel to book a cruise, a trip to Disney and a trip to Hawaii. The prices i've paid are no more than what i would pay on the internet and their advice has been so spot-on it has saved me hours of research if i tried to book these on my own. The staff are helpful and wonderful and i plan to continue to use them in the future.

Top 5 airlines flying to El Dorado Hills

Seats are uncomfortable but let room was adequate. The snack is pretty weak and the staff not particularly friendly.

We landed in San Diego from Fresno 10 min late and our gate was occupied. We waited OVER AN HOUR to get to the gate and didnt get any updates about what was happening until I asked. Then we were told it would be another 5 minutes....which turned into 25. My wife was waiting in cell phone lot over an hour and finally had to leave. It cost me $40 cab ride and a fight with my wife. THanks for nothing Alaska Air.

The terminal at Newark is a complete dump, utterly, profoundly sub-acceptable is every dimension: overcrowded, under-venitilated, lacking in seating, terrible and minimal food options, terrble sound quality from gate announcements, gate agents completely untrained in use of a microphone. And that is after going through the worst and slowest tsa checkpoint in the country. I will never fly to Newark again and will avoid Alaska if at all possible in future travel.

The flight was delayed for 2 hours and the last delay was not communicated and had to check manually.

When Alaska uses Sky west which it does on many flights in and out of PDX, The planes use " Gates" that are outside of the terminal and are a long walk to and from the planes. Also you must board and deplane using a ramp. I have difficulty walking so going into Portland was difficult. Going out was worse . We walked to nearly the emd of this "Tunnel " only to be told there was a problem with the plane so we had to take the long walk back to to the terminal and then back out again when the plane was fixed. I will look for a Southwest flight next time I go to Portland

Crew was outstanding. Flight was fine. Food was a joke! I didn't get the priority I paid for!! That pissed me off since I paid extra!!!

I liked the price of the 2 way tix. I hated having to pay $8.00 for Internet access. It should be free. Legroom and seats are very confining.

The one stewardess was rude about helping me put my bag in overhead….she said “ Is it heavy ?” (I am 73 yrs old)

The flight was about an hour late, and there was notable turbulence for a good part of it. But of course, that was not Alaska Air’s fault, and I think the crew did a good job of keeping it safe. Service suffered a little as a result (I wish I had been offered the option of purchasing food). Overall, it was ok, because we landed safe and sound. Thanks!

Flight was delayed 2 hours. Other than that, it was a good flight.

It was good until there was a 3 hour delay because there was not any pilots to fly the plane.

Had to change aircraft due to a faulty door. Surprisingly it only caused about an hour and a half of delay. Delta handled this situation as well as can be expected.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.

Everything was very good other than I had selected a specific seat when I booked the flight and they changed it once I checked-in the day before my flight. I was still in first class but lost my aisle seat for a window seat. Being tall, the aisle offers more comfort so I always select an aisle seat.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

I’ve had a couple flights this week on United that were delayed by an hour or more

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

Our original business class flight was cancelled so we not only downgraded but we were also spread out across the plane not sitting together in separate middle seats. My poor kids were scared and couldn’t see me on the flight and the crew wasn’t sensitive to the situation and what the airlines did to us. Very dissatisfied with United airlines.

The WiFi didn’t work and the seats are too close together. Very uncomfortable.

My husband and I pre-ordered our food, but they did not have my husband’s order, and my cheese plate was very average. I asked for a blanket and was told they don’t carry blankets on domestic routs. The flight was on time and smooth!

There were delays on both ends. It made it less than excellent. This plane was great though

Everything was great except for the wifi was junk. Crew was super friendly and helpful

Attendants were rude. Scowling. Seats were miserable and we paid extra.

Fight crew was not very attentive and the bastions were gross!

Our flight was great we left Kona earlier and got into LAX almost an 1hour earlier as well. LAX AA is in repair so to get out and found our bus to get pick up was a bit confusing.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

5 hour flight - full flight - not enough room to use my computer - slightly delayed - Admirals club was excellent quality food, drink made up for flight seating. No food offerred on flight, you ahd to prebook.

We experience delays on departure and connecting flights resulting in 14 hour to our next departure. We were accommodated with a night's stay but was only provided a 12 dollar meals accommodation. The airlines rules state.at least 50 dollars. In any case, it can not make up for the whole day missed on our vacation in Sydney Australia.

I can say I will not be taking this airline again any time soon. Seat were uncomfortable and too tight. Lack of chair screen and little overhead space.

Flight was good and clean but delayed over an hour on the return flight.

It was nice! There was a very unhappy child in front of us and the flight attendant did a great job calming the child. I was impressed.

They stuck us with multiple extra fees. I will never fly spirit again

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger.

They charged me 212.00 for a heavy check in bag at the gate. The pricing and process was so confusing - as if it was designed to purposefully gouge customers who need to board plane. That experience combined with the outrageous price charged will prevent me from ever flying Spirit again. And I’ll be sure to tell the story to anyone who cares to hear.

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.

The agent at the check in desk was absolutely rude. The rest of the team after that was good, but the check in process at LAS was miserable. The woman at the desk spoke like we were stupid and was rude throughout the process.

Its so random that they only allow 40 pounds on checked bags when all airlines take 55. They then charge you for each 10 extra pounds, so my checked suitcase was $130 and the flight $30 ... its like whattt, im for sure not traveling with Spirit again

So bad. The check in process was laborious and the check in agent didn't seem to know how to manage the process efficiently and was confused about how to check in my son's sports equipment. The baggage fees were outrageous and so expensive. $90 for a carry on bag? And $200 additional for 2 check ins. The security lines were insanely long and the terminal was not very nice in the Spirit area. $5 for a water on board. It was my first and last time flying Spirit - I tried to save $ by flying them due to the accommodating schedule but I should have paid for Southwest, because it would've actually ended up less expensive due to the free bags with Southwest. There were no charging ports on the airplane, no wifi and really uncomfortable seating. The flight crew were great though, courteous and efficient in their boarding. Flight was delayed 1 hour, but we made up 15 minutes in flight.

My experience was better than expected. What I did find not so great was the seats. Very little room, they did not recline and the tray table was the size of a post card. There was no food to try, just standard snacks that you had to pay for and I don’t know of any entertainment. I would fly again even though everything was an upcharge. Flight was on time with little disturbance
