How to Actually Relax on Vacation

By Olivia Morelli

Diving from high cliff into the ocean

How to relax on vacation? It's easier said than done. As much as we love a holiday, the combination of planning, booking, traveling, and being in an unfamiliar place can be exceedingly stressful. (Though, you know, we at Traveler hope that our destination guides , intel , and recommendations—from the best places to go in 2024 to some of our favorite hotels and cruises ever —help alleviate the sense of overwhelming bounty the travel world has to offer.) Truly, there’s nothing worse than returning from a trip feeling more uptight than before you left. Ever need a vacation from your vacation? Not fun.

So, below, we round up the best ways to make sure you actually relax on vacation—from the ultimate packing tips to advice from experts on the best ways to truly unwind.

A version of this article originally appeared on Condé Nast Traveller UK .

Pack properly

When it comes to organizing your holiday, spontaneity can be really fun. Booking flights, activities, and restaurants all can be improved with a sprinkling of carpe diem. For packing, however, organization is key. Whatever you do, don’t leave packing until the day of travel. There will undoubtedly be a few items that spring to mind just before you head out the door, so make sure you aren’t already frazzled and sick of packing when that happens.

Making a list is always helpful in ensuring you don’t forget anything important, but if you’re not a list kind of person, then just make sure you give yourself enough time to remember anything important. Start with the essentials: passport , phone, charger, keys, wallet, visas or travel documents, prescription medication .

Throwing a bunch of mismatched clothing items is never the best policy, so think of what the weather will be like at your destination, dress codes at any fancy restaurants or events you might be attending, cozy outfits for evenings in, and suitable footwear for a variety of activities (there’s nothing worse than discovering the only shoes you’ve brought give you blisters on day one). For toiletries, packing your liquids in a transparent plastic bag will save you time during security, so you aren’t frantically scrambling through your bags while in line.

Structure and schedules can help

Organized fun may not  always  be the best kind of fun, but when it comes to being able to enjoy your holiday to the fullest, sometimes a little structure is the best way to achieve that. Think about what you want to get out of your vacation: Is there a particular restaurant you want to try ? A museum you’ve been desperate to visit? A beach you can picture yourself snoozing on? Doing your research will help guarantee you can slot in everything you want to experience during your trip.

Booking restaurants or bars in advance will save you valuable time; buying tickets for galleries or museums means that you won’t be forced to wait in line for hours on end; and a quick Google search of a beach will tell you how long you need to leave for transport there and back, plus anything else of note (when does it get crowded, are there sun beds, are there places for food nearby, etc.).

Of course, leave yourself some time for last-minute decisions and spontaneity . The unexpected is often the most fun, but only if you’re in the best mindset to embrace it when it appears.

Spend some time outside

For most of us, the majority of our working days are spent indoors. Vacations are a great time to get some much-needed fresh air and vitamin D, plus there can be some serious health benefits to getting outdoors on your holidays. “Spending time in nature helps travelers relax by reducing their mental fatigue, boosting happiness, and restoring their concentration,” Dr. Mahrukh Khwaja, a Positive Psychologist (MAPP), founder of Mind Ninja, and author of  Navigating A Squiggly Life , tells Traveler . “An unthreatening natural environment allows the mind to wander freely and relaxes the brain’s strong focus on specific tasks.”

That’s not to say you need to prioritize exercise on your holidays, but raising your heart rate slightly during a trip, be it from walking, swimming, hiking , or dancing, can do wonders for your ability to relax for the rest of your time away. “Studies show that travelers spending time in nature and taking part in hikes, walks, or cycling exhibit a reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension,” Dr. Khwaja explains. “Research also shows that tourists staying in green environments produce lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.” All that to say, simply spending more time outdoors can help you relax on your travels and therefore more fully enjoy your time away.

Soak up the local culture

Immersing yourself in a new place’s culture and history can help you unwind. It can be hard to switch off from the stresses of home, whether that is stressing about your workload when you return, resisting the urge to check your emails, or worrying about family members waiting for you at home. Meeting new people , learning new things, and educating yourself about the place you are visiting can help you get out of your head and momentarily forget those stressors waiting for you.

“Taking holidays can enhance our quality of life and happiness through the experience of new, novel moments, increasing our sense of meaning, and an increase in positive emotions, such as awe, gratitude, and curiosity when we immerse ourselves in different cultures,” Dr. Khwaja says. “Studies also report that traveling and taking a break from work reduces work stress, exhaustion, and absenteeism through the practice of switching off, slowing down, and prioritizing experiences that nourish travelers.”

Cognisomatic hypnotherapist  Jessica Boston  explains why broadening your horizons might help your mental health long after your holiday ends. “Being in a different environment to our usual one challenges the algorithms of our perceptual reality. Our subconscious mind makes sense of the world through our standardized algorithms of safety and possibility,” she explains. “When we are on holiday , our subconscious mind takes information in and decides if something is the same, similar, or different to something it already knows, and then takes action on how to respond appropriately—for example, recognizing any potential threats or danger).”

Traveling gives us a perfect time to exercise these mental skills. Boston goes on to say, “It’s easy through times of stress for these processes of coming to terms with our perceptual reality to get more narrow. We become lazy and more ‘blanket’ in how we perceive new experiences, which can damage our mental health. Travel challenges our perceptual reality and sets off a chain reaction where we can make sense of the wider world more easily. This can help us become more hopeful of what we can achieve beyond our basic understanding and, therefore, help us to feel better. We begin to think: ‘If this is possible, what else is possible?’”

Take your time

We rush around every day, running to catch trains and hurrying through our commutes, finishing off tasks as quickly as possible and willing the clock to move faster so we can finish work and rush back home . It can be tempting to treat holidays the same way—rushing to make sure you can squeeze in everything you want to do in a short period of time. But holidays are a time to pause and slow things down. It’s not often that we return to a destination more than once, so it’s important to appreciate the little things as much as possible. Pacing yourself through activities and things you’d like to do means you give yourself the time to actually enjoy each individual moment. Give yourself longer time periods that you think you might need to explore, so that if you end up really enjoying something in particular, you don’t need to rush onto the next thing.

Practice mindfulness

Before you skip this section, hear me out. I don’t mean you need to meditate on your next holiday (although if you’d like to do so, go ahead). Being mindful allows you to appreciate things you may otherwise have overlooked. Take your time to think about all the different sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of your new surroundings. Looking up, for example, is a travel tip I’ve often received; as weird as it sounds, by glancing upwards now and then you might catch sight of intriguing architecture, tiled buildings, murals on walls, or—if you’re lucky—a buzzing rooftop bar you won’t have noticed otherwise.

“In our hectic daily lives, the urgent pace driven by our anxieties and a demanding culture often keeps us from being in the present moment,” Boston explains. “There is a bid for attention from so many outlets, and anything related to survival keeps us constantly watching for imminent danger. This habitual state makes it challenging to be truly present as our minds continuously w1orks overtime.”

“Stepping away from the familiar environment that reinforces these patterns offers a natural break from survival cycles,” she expands. “Slowing down to pay attention to new cultures, sights, and sounds helps us to be fully in the present, which recalibrates our relationship with time and effortlessly realigns our priorities. Suddenly, the pressure of a work email diminishes when juxtaposed with centuries of history or diverse ways of life. By slowing down, you will find that you discover new aspects of yourself and find simple joys that remind you that now is the time is now to fully enjoy yourself. Your ability to practice being present will reshape your perspective and reposition your priorities leading to a greater sense of inner peace.”

“The pressure of a work email diminishes when juxtaposed with centuries of history or diverse ways of life.”

Dr. Khwaja agrees: “A key way in which our brain can benefit from traveling is through the practice of being mindful abroad. Researchers report practicing mindfulness as a tourist, such as increasing awareness of our external environment, grounding ourselves to the present moment, and non-judgmental perception about a destination has positive impacts on our wellbeing, actions, and thinking responses. Mindfulness allows us to move from stress to awareness and broadens our attention to reframe life circumstances in a positive way.”

Treat yourself while on your trip

Obviously, a vacation in itself is a treat—and it can be an expensive one at that. But if you are already going on holiday, then it’s important to make sure that you aren’t spending the entire trip worrying about how much everything costs and scrimping on experiences while you’re there. This harks back to the earlier point about organization: If you plan accordingly, you’ll be able to balance out more affordable experiences with some finer ones too. A vacation is supposed to be a spoiling experience, so make sure you give yourself the opportunity to enjoy the trip as much as you can afford to.

Don’t put too much pressure on the vacation

Having said that, it’s equally as important to realize that a holiday is not always guaranteed to go entirely smoothly. It’s helpful to remind yourself that you are in a new-to-you place and you cannot plan for every potential. There are endless amounts of variables that can occur, and attempting to plan for all of them is never going to work. Do what you can to prepare yourself physically and mentally, but once you arrive at your destination, try your best to relinquish attempts to control anything and everything. This is a chance for you to fully relax, kick back, and enjoy the little time we get each year to let things unfold naturally.

5 Easy Steps to Actually Enjoy Your Vacation

Stop stressing, and start making the most out of your time off.

enjoy your trip vacation

You'd think planning and going on a vacation would be a dream. But, for a surprising number of people, taking time off of work, family, and daily responsibilities can be a stressful nightmare.

In 2015, Healthline surveyed more than 2,000 working adults and found that 62 percent of respondents had "very" or "somewhat" elevated levels of stress during their winter vacations. But stress is the last thing that should be holding us back from taking time off. Here are five ways to keep stress at bay when planning, taking, and returning from a vacation — so you can enjoy your hard-earned getaway.

Don't be so hard on yourself, to begin with.

"If you're someone who works, you're checking your emails, you're getting text messages, maybe you're going onto social media, you're digesting a lot of information, so it's no wonder that we're going to have a hard time settling down from that and quieting our mind on vacation," Dr. Megan Jones Bell, clinical psychologist and former chief science officer at meditation and mindfulness app Headspace , told Travel + Leisure . "It's a lot to expect that you just go flip a switch."

To help combat the stress of planning travel, try to unpack what is actually making you stressed in the first place. Is it the idea of unplugging that has you worried? Then maybe book a vacation where you know there will be reliable Wi-Fi . Are you stressed about feeling like you have to check in with work but don't really want to? Try an internet-free vacation instead. Worried you can't plan the ultimate trip? Hire these A-list travel agents to do it for you. No matter the source of your stress, there is always a way to help ease it.

Start the relaxation process before you leave.

According to Bell, you should begin the relaxation process before you even leave for the airport. This, Bell explained, can be done by building in rituals and routines you can perform before, during, and after a trip "that help anchor you and act as a buffer to the stress that's going to try to creep back in."

For Bell, this entails settling in for a Headspace meditation routine, which means she begins a new 10-minute daily practice several days before leaving for an excursion. If you're new to meditation, you can always sign up for the app (free trials are available for newcomers) and work your way up minute by minute each day until you find a comfortable length.

For others, those rituals could also mean journaling what you hope to gain from your vacation or creating a personalized itinerary so you can ensure you get to see everything you want to while away. Just make sure you make your routine your own.

Make sure all your vacation goals are achievable.

Making plans for your vacation is a great idea, but stuffing your days with too many to-dos can be a real buzzkill. In fact, multiple studies have proven that meticulously planning your leisure time can seriously ruin your fun. And it's not the activity, but rather the act of assigning a time to an activity that will do you in.

To combat this itinerary-induced stress, Bell suggested starting each morning of your trip by setting an intention. Taking just a few minutes to quiet your mind and think about what you'd like to accomplish that day will help mitigate any stress you may feel later on.

And before your departure, try creating a looser itinerary for your journey. Create a list of all the "must-see" places and another of "would like to see." This way you can prioritize your time without feeling constrained by the clock.

Use vacation time to kickstart healthy new routines.

Instead of thinking of vacation as a few days away from your real life, think of it as a few days away to help improve your everyday.

"Vacation is a really great time to initiate healthy habits that you just don't have the time or energy to start during your day-to-day life," Bell said, noting that you're much more likely to pull healthy routines back into your life if you can start them in a happy, conducive environment.

To do this, look into a vacation that is tailor-made for your goals, such as a yoga retreat , a culinary journey to improve your kitchen skills, or even an all-around wellness getaway to renew your mind, body, and soul. Or, as Bell suggested, use it as a great time to — you guessed it — start a meditation practice, which has some seriously impressive, scientifically-backed health benefits .

Keep up your new habits for at least 10 days after you return.

According to Bell, it takes just 10 days to form a new habit, meaning if you start a new one on your vacation you should bring it home with you to reap all the rewards.

"Research at Headspace has shown that the use of the app for just 10 days can reduce stress," Bell said. "So that's where I'd say before your vacation, if you start meditating and you can do just 10 minutes a day during it, it's gonna help reduce your vulnerability to stress."

But really, no matter what new habits you form or how relaxed you were on vacation, re-entering your normal life can get you down. To combat the post-vacation blues, make sure to build in an adjustment day to settle in, decorate your home with your new souvenirs, and stay in the vacation mindset as long as you can. Follow these steps and you'll be a master at beating vacation stress in no time.

Now, there's only one thing left to do: Plan your next stress-free adventure .

8 Tips How to Really Enjoy Your Vacation

Avatar

Experience pure happiness on your vacations by living in the moment and reducing stress. You can accomplish these strategies by planning ahead and incorporating a few healthy habits into your real life.

Research shows that American adults’ happiness begins with planning.

Vacation planning brings joy because the excitement builds, and you can look forward to something.

Plus, most people who go on vacation experience the perks of feeling happy and excited before the vacation actually occurs more than the vacation itself.

However, don’t waste your entire life waiting for your dream vacation.

If you want to visit a beach, big city, or a golf course, you can make your dream come to life by planning ahead.

Additionally, on the first day of your vacation, be sure to be in a good mindset no matter what.

You are there to relax and de-stress, so do not give into minor distractions.

Also, make sure you have everything you need before leaving home to reduce future anxiety.

How To Plan The Best Vacation ?

  • First off, with whom are you traveling? Make sure you have positive travel companions instead of surrounding yourself with people you don’t like. Therefore, stay away from people who cause you stress when planning vacations, or you could spend your whole time miserable.

You also shouldn’t bring the wrong friends who will force you to do things you don’t want to do. Instead, make sure everyone agrees on your chosen destination and plan activities in alignment.

  • Second, you must plan. For example, finding a resort with unlimited access to food can take away from the stress of keeping track of your finances and will awaken your enjoyment factor.

Thus, research hotels before booking anything.

  • Seek out doable vacations over a “once in a lifetime” trip. Studies show that our brains will get bored with the “once in a lifetime” trip quicker than smaller pleasures experienced more frequently.
  • Try new, fun things. Time slows down when adults break from routine. New experiences will make your vacation seem longer and add to the fun and rewards of the overall experience.

Check out Airbnb Experiences in advance to search for things to do near your destination.

  • Hire a babysitter. Parents will end up spending most of their vacation time taking care of their kids. They will need to clean up after them, watch them every second of the day, and plan each day for them.

Taking care of children is not exactly the recipe for relaxation. If you can afford it, look for a babysitter so you can keep your precious time to yourself.

  • Take control of work. Get work off your plate and vocalize to your boss and co-workers that you will be out of the office. Hopefully, this type of planning will limit your workload.

However, if things come up, schedule time at the beginning of the day to answer emails, return calls, and then shut off for the rest of the day. That way, you are taking care of business but remaining present on your vacation by putting away the computer.

Overall, your co-workers will have to understand if you are making an effort to get things done at the beginning of the day.

  • Manage the transition. The day after vacation can be a mess because of unpacking, errands, and chores. If possible, plan to go home early and get an early flight so you can have the day to organize your things.
  • Choose a location where the weather is consistently nice. For example, if you want to go to the Jersey shore, make sure it is in the summer. Or, if you’re going to find a beach, pick an island vacation that is not in hurricane season. You don’t want to end up stuck inside because of bad weather.

How To Plan A Trip If You Are Bad At Planning ?

If planning stresses you out and is not for you, there are certain options that can help you.

For instance, you can hire a travel agent. Hiring a travel agent is the ultimate way to avoid all the planning anxiety.

If you do not want to spend money on an agent, get inspiration from social media, specifically Pinterest, to help you think of a list of to-dos while on holiday.

Taking the time to organize your ideas for your vacation goals will leave you feeling more relaxed going into the trip so you can create present memories with your friends or family.

Another option to avoid planning for your vacation is visiting a friend. Do you have a person you miss seeing because they moved away? You can have your friend plan sights to see around their city and take you out for a “day in their life.” It’s always a great time to visit a familiar face. You may even end up in a different country and have the time of your life.

  • How To Reduce Stress In Just A Few Minutes

When something goes awry on your vacation, do not react. You do not want to ruin your trip with reactive behavior. Instead, take a deep breath for your well-being because breathing exercises can help you calm down in just a few minutes.

The best way to find happiness when things are going wrong is to stay mindful and step back from the situation to take a break. Vacation is about relaxing, after all.

Another great idea is to take a walk. Walking can improve your mindfulness and health and take your mind off things by focusing on your surroundings.

Finally, do not focus all your energy on making each day a perfect day. Things will go wrong, the family might cause issues, but you will have to deal with them. Planning as much as possible helps prevent this type of stress.

  • How To Get More Vacation Time

Everyone wishes they had more time off, but what if you could make it a reality? Some companies and jobs allow you to carry over your vacation days into the new year. Ask your boss if this perk is something your company is willing to do.

Another way to get more vacation days is to ask your boss if you can have extra. You may need to barter some paychecks or other holidays, but there is always room for negotiations.

Lastly, if you plan your vacation around a holiday, you can get an extra day off. For example, if the Fourth of July is on a Thursday, you can take that week off, so you are taking less time than you normally would. Plus, you can add the holiday weekend to your trip.

Your dream vacations can happen just by taking time to plan ahead and stay mindful.

Therefore, you should do your research before your vacation to make sure the itinerary makes sense upon arrival. Additionally, take care of work early in the day on your getaway or before you arrive. You should also travel with people you enjoy the company of and plan activities together.

Also, practice mindful breathing to stay calm when things go awry and you need a break from the scene. Plus, be mindful while vacationing, so you are making memories and staying away from your phone.

Finally, wait for a holiday or holidays to take off work to get extra days off, so you can vacation wherever you want in the world without a worry.

10 Better Ways to Say “Enjoy Your Stay”

You might hear someone say “enjoy your stay” while spending time in their country or city. It’s a hospitable phrase that shows you’re welcome there. This article will explore some synonyms you might also be able to use if you want to replace this phrase.

Better Ways to Say Enjoy Your Stay

The preferred alternatives are “have a lovely time,” “enjoy your trip,” and “enjoy your time here.” They show that you’re either traveling to a new place or staying in one. People will use these phrases to welcome you or to wish you a good time (usually on vacation ).

Have A Lovely Time

“Have a lovely time” works really well when you want to show that someone is welcome. It is a great synonym for “enjoy your stay” because it shows that you welcome them and you want them to have a “lovely time.”

You can use this phrase if you know that your local area has a lot to offer.

Similarly, if you know that someone is going on vacation and you are talking to them for the last time before they leave, you’ll be able to say this as a parting message.

  • I hope you have a lovely time. There are plenty of things to do around here. Make sure you explore some of the best ones.
  • Have a lovely time away! I will miss you a lot, but I know you’re going to have a blast while you’re out there.
  • Have a lovely time! Don’t forget about us while you’re out there having the time of your life! Come back to us.

Enjoy Your Trip

“Enjoy your trip” is another great alternative. However, “trip” implies that someone is traveling to a new area. If they have already arrived in a new place, it’s likely that “enjoy your trip” won’t work (but “enjoy your stay” will).

“Trip” always means that someone is traveling. This phrase is great for someone who is just leaving to go on holiday, and you’re saying goodbye to them.

  • Enjoy your trip, Steve. You’ve had a tough run, but I’m so excited for you to go out and explore a little bit of the world.
  • Enjoy your trip. We’ll see you on the other side. Hopefully, you’ll have some great experiences to share with us.
  • I hope you enjoy your trip. Let me know if there’s anything you might need from me while you’re away. I’m here to help.

Enjoy Your Time Here

“Enjoy your time here” is a great way to welcome someone to a place. “Time here” is used to show that you are welcoming them, as “here” shows that they are in an area that you are comfortable and familiar with.

“Enjoy your time” is synonymous with “enjoy your stay.” It works best when you are welcoming someone to a new area. You won’t often find that it works when someone is leaving or traveling to a new place (only when they arrive there).

  • Enjoy your time here. I think you’re going to fall in love with this country. Just shout if you need anything from me.
  • Enjoy your time here, mate. You’re going to find so many wonderful things to do while you’re out exploring.
  • We all hope that you enjoy your time here. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. That’s for sure.

Enjoy Your Visit

“Enjoy your visit” is a common way to be hospitable to tourists and travelers. “Visit” works when you are talking about the local area. If someone has just traveled to where you live, you can say “enjoy your visit” to show that they’re welcome.

It’s a really good way of welcoming someone into your area or community. “Visit” is similar to “trip,” though it works best when you know that someone has just arrived at the place they are “visiting” (whereas “trip” means they’re traveling toward it).

  • Enjoy your visit, tourist! I’ll be here if you need anything from me. I’ll act as your guide for the next two weeks.
  • Enjoy your visit to our bountiful countryside. Hopefully, you’ll find some amazing things to get up to as you explore.
  • Enjoy your visit here, Dan. It’s going to be so wonderful for you to learn about some of the local activities.

Have A Great Vacation

“Have a great vacation” works for people who have arrived or are traveling to their destination. You can say it when someone is leaving to go on vacation, and you can say it when you’ve just seen someone start their vacation.

For example, if your friend is going on vacation tomorrow morning, you could say, “have a great vacation.”

Once that friend arrives in a new country and checks into the hotel, the receptionist could also say, “have a great vacation.”

  • Have a great vacation, Sarah. We’re definitely going to miss you, but we’re sure you’re going to have the best time abroad.
  • Have a great vacation. Don’t forget to send us a postcard. We want to hear about everything you’re getting up to.
  • I want you to have a great vacation. That’s why I’ve sorted all of the things you need to do before you head over there.

“Have fun” is a simple way to show that someone should “enjoy your stay.” You don’t need to overthink things. “Have fun” already shows that you hope someone is going to make the most of their time during their “stay” with you.

  • Have fun! Don’t let anybody upset you while you’re out there. This holiday is for you and your self-discovery.
  • Have fun, of course! Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with while you’re out there.
  • Have fun! It’s going to be so wonderful to have someone like you around these parts.

Please, Make Yourself Comfortable

“Please, make yourself comfortable” is a bit more specific. It works best when you’re welcoming somebody into your hotel or local area. “Make yourself comfortable” is a common hospitable phrase when someone is entering your house.

The idea here is that you are a local. If you are comfortable in your area, you will often want travelers and tourists to feel comfortable. The encouraging phrase “make yourself comfortable” works well here.

  • Please, make yourself comfortable. Don’t let anybody tread on your toes while you’re here. Just have a fun time.
  • Please, make yourself comfortable in our wonderful city. There are so many sights to see and things to do.
  • Please, make yourself comfortable. We love welcoming new people into our amazing hotel. Enjoy yourself.

There’s Plenty To Get Involved With

“There’s plenty to get involved with ” is another specific choice. This time, it’s referring to people immersing themselves in the local activities and things there might be to do around.

If you live in an area that has a lot to offer or do, you might find that this phrase works well. It encourages someone to go out and try things that will improve their “stay” or “visit.”

  • There’s plenty to get involved with around these parts. We hope you enjoy some of the local culture while you’re here.
  • There’s plenty to get involved with around here. Please, make sure you check out some of the local attractions before you leave.
  • There’s plenty to get involved with all over this place. You know that you can always come to me if you need help as well.

I’m Sure You’ll Love It Here

“I’m sure you’ll love it here” shows that you have faith in the area someone is staying. Rather than saying “enjoy your stay,” you can use “I’m sure” to show that you’re assuming how much they will enjoy themselves.

“I’m sure” works well here to show that you know the area well. It works when you want to imply that everyone has fun or “loves” the area that they “stay” in. It usually gives the person you’re speaking to confidence in having fun.

  • I’m sure you’ll love it here. This is one of the greatest cities on earth, and there is so much for you to do around these parts.
  • I’m sure you’ll love it here. It’s such a beautiful place, and every tourist that visits seems to fall in love with what we offer.
  • I think you’ll love it here. It’s everything you’ve been looking for in a vacation. Just take the weight off your feet and have fun.

Make The Most Of It

“Make the most of it” works well to show that someone needs to enjoy themselves. Some people can forget that they need to relax on holidays and vacations. For those people, phrases like this work well to remind them that there’s plenty to do to have fun.

While this isn’t the most common hospitable phrase you can use, it still works well. It shows that you’re hoping that someone will find the beauty in the area around them (especially if you live locally and you love the area).

  • Make the most of it, sir. So many people forget to enjoy themselves while they’re here. There are so many great things to do.
  • Please, make the most of it out here. You’ll find so many interesting things to get up to. You definitely don’t want to miss out.
  • Make the most of it. It’s a vacation that you’re much in need of. Now, just go out there and have a blast.

You’re Vacationing All Wrong. Here’s How to Have a Truly Restful Break

enjoy your trip vacation

T ravel can do wonders for your well-being. “Experiencing awe, going to novel places, engaging your creative mind, being in nature, and spending time with family and friends are all things that we know can increase well-being and even reduce stress,” says Stephanie Preston, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan.

But those perks aren’t a given. As anyone who’s dealt with intrusive work emails or an overly ambitious itinerary can attest, it’s possible to arrive back home from a trip feeling more stressed than you were before you left.

Keeping certain tips in mind as you plan and set out will help you better reap the benefits of travel.

Take a few short trips instead of one long one

Because the positive effects of traveling fade about a month after you return home—and because the planning process can make you happier than the trip itself—traveling more often could be key to improving mental health, says Laurence Chan, instructor of medical psychology at Columbia University. That means taking a few smaller trips may be better than taking one big trip, he says.

It may also be easier to fit into a busy life. “If someone is taking a longer vacation, there could also be a logistical limitation to disconnecting, and someone could be more likely to engage in work spillover tasks—like attending a ‘can’t-miss’ meeting or conference call,” he says.

Temporarily delete or mute apps

It’s hard, but put your phone away as much as possible—and consider deleting your work email app or social media apps while you’re gone. One 2016 study linked spending less time on one’s phone to a more relaxing vacation.

“I think social media in general is hard to disconnect from,” says Dr. Paul Nestadt, a psychiatrist and director of the Johns Hopkins Anxiety Disorders Clinic. “It can be anxiety-provoking to keep doomscrolling.” He adds that some of his patients actually feel more anxiety from disconnecting entirely, so be mindful of your personality and what suits you best.

If you’re particularly addicted to your phone, Preston recommends choosing a vacation destination that has limited internet access, such as a camping spot in the mountains.

Have a loose plan

If you’re aiming for a relaxing getaway, you shouldn’t overschedule yourself. But don’t underschedule yourself either, says Henley Vazquez, co-founder of the travel agency Fora.

“There can be the impulse to figure it out when you’re there,” she says. But faced with an empty agenda,  “we end up defaulting to checking our phones.”

Vazquez says a good rule of thumb is to plan a half-day’s worth of activities every day. Consider also preparing a list of restaurants you’d like to try in advance so you don’t succumb to stressfully surfing Yelp from your hotel room.

Put down your camera

While it might be tempting to take photos throughout your trip, consider occasionally leaving your camera or phone in your bag and simply enjoying the present moment. “I think it has become almost an impulse to experience your own trip through your social sharing rather than to just experience it on the ground,” Vazquez says.

Instead of snapping photos for Instagram, work on savoring your scenic hike, relaxing boat ride, or joy-filled family dinner. “No matter which activities you engage in, I think it’s important to do them fully,” Chan says. “If you’re going to be walking, just walk. If you’re going to be exploring the sites, just take them in.”

It might seem like a counterintuitive way to tamp down stress, but try to do extra work before you leave for your trip, Nestadt says. If you don’t, you risk feeling even more overwhelmed when you return home. “That can kind of delete or overwrite the beneficial effects you would’ve had from the trip,” he says.

Cut your trip a day short

Even though you might dream of spending 10 days sunbathing and swimming in Hawaii, nine would be better if it means you have a day of rest and recovery between your vacation and returning to work or school.

“If part of the reason you’re taking the vacation is because you need a break, then building a buffer [day] in really allows the recuperation that you’re able to achieve on vacation to last,” Nestadt says. An extra day at home is especially helpful if your trip involves jet lag, Preston adds.

Go for a hike or swim

One study found that when people exercise on vacation—regardless of whether they do at home—they had improved sleep, heart rates, and well-being. Although a run on the hotel gym’s treadmill is good, it’s even better to break a sweat in nature, as exercising outdoors can lower anxiety and stress.

Choose a sun-drenched spot

Regular exposure to sunlight has countless benefits for physical and mental health. It can improve sleep, strengthen the immune system, release mood-boosting serotonin, increase vitamin D stores, and lower blood pressure. One study found that people experienced more health benefits from their vacation when they were in a sunny locale rather than an overcast one. If you’re torn between Seattle and San Diego for your next jaunt, for example, you might feel happier and more relaxed if you choose the latter.

Consider your travel companions

You might think traveling with anyone will be fun—a vacation is a vacation, right? Wrong. One study found that who we travel with greatly impacts how much we enjoy our trip. (Out of traveling alone or with someone’s friends, partner, relatives, or colleagues, people enjoyed traveling with their colleagues the least.)

One reason: You might want to rise and shine for a morning hike, for instance, whereas your brother-in-law might want to sleep in and zone out at the beach. “There can be a lot of interpersonal conflict over how you manage the schedule and the priorities,” Preston says.

To truly recharge, think very carefully about how well your vacation desires will mesh with those of your travel companions.

Tap your friends for advice

Googling the best restaurants in Mexico City could lead you down a three-hour rabbit hole of research. Instead, consider asking for food recommendations only from your friend who went there a few months ago. “Crowdsource advice from friends who have been places, and they’ll tell you the restaurants to go to or the hikes that were spectacular, and that can save a lot of time,” Preston says.

Pack with compression cubes

Packing is personal, Vazquez says. Some people carefully plan their outfits, while others toss a hodgepodge of items into their suitcase and figure it out later. Regardless of your style, she recommends using compression packing cubes to condense your items and serve as portable drawers, keeping you organized while you’re away. “I cannot overemphasize what a game changer these were for me when I found them,” she says. They’re particularly useful for people traveling with kids, as you can pack each family member’s items in a different compression bag.

Eliminate layovers if you can

You might not be able to avoid layovers if you’re traveling somewhere far away, or if your budget doesn’t allow for a nonstop flight. But it’s ideal to take direct flights and streamline travel if you can. Flight connections can be stressful, especially if you’re traveling internationally, have a short layover time, or if one leg of your flight is delayed.

If you’re spending significant time getting to and from your destination, you might not return feeling like you had a truly restful trip, Vazquez says. “You might have even added to your anxiety by making a large portion of your time away dedicated to complicated travel arrangements,” she says.

A first-time guide to Naples, Florida

Sunset at the beach in Naples.

The beaches in Naples are ideal whether you're traveling solo, with your sweetheart or with family © Susanne Pommer / Shutterstock

Located on the southeast edge of the Florida peninsula, the cozy coastal town of Naples is a wonderful choice for your next weekend escape, romantic getaway or family trip.

The area offers plenty of water sports, fine dining and upscale shopping, though its pristine beaches alone are enough for a relaxing vacation, and the super friendly people here are more than willing to reveal their insider tips about the Paradise Coast.

While reports show that Naples is home to some of the wealthiest people  in the US, the cost of living here is still more affordable than other popular Florida cities like Miami or Palm Beach. And despite the rumors that the city isn’t the most diverse, I, as a Black woman, feel very safe and welcomed by the locals.

Here’s what you need to know to make the most of your first time in Naples.

GettyImages-1355277399.jpg

When should I go to Naples?

The best time to visit Naples is between March and May. Notably, it has yet to become a popular spring break spot, so you'll find it peaceful this time of year. The weather is at its most pleasant, and accommodations are reasonably priced.

From June to September, Naples gets very hot, with lots of rain and average temperatures over 90ºF (32ºC), sometimes even exceeding 100ºF (38ºC). If you visit around this time, be sure to bring an umbrella, as hurricane season for the Sunshine State is July through October. Although the weather is dicey, you'll find some decent deals around this time.

Winters in Naples are mild but still offer an escape from the cold weather, as average temperatures linger around the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 24ºC). This is also an ideal time for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

How much time should I spend in Naples?

Naples is the perfect destination for a three-day weekend trip and, in my opinion, works best for anyone looking for a quick solo or romantic getaway to experience the white sandy beaches and great food. Stay longer, and you can make time for day trips to nearby destinations like Fort Myers and Everglades National Park .

Cars are parked alongside white buildings on a street lined with palm trees at sunset

How do I get to Naples?

Although Naples does have its own airport, it’s primarily reserved for those flying on private airplanes. In fact, while you’re in the city, you can often see stylish jets in the sky throughout the day.

That said, you’ll likely want to fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), located in Fort Myers, which is roughly a 35-minute drive to Old Naples. The average price of a rideshare is roughly $50 or so, depending on the time of day.

Is it easy to get around Naples?

Naples is certainly a very walkable town in most areas – especially near and around the bustling 5th Ave South. For those looking to rent a car, it’s also a driveable city without heavy traffic, and it has a decent number of both paid and free parking options.

From personal experience, rideshares are your best bet for getting around, especially for short weekend getaways. Uber pick-up times are fast, with average waits of three to five minutes, and prices range from roughly $7–16 per ride.

Sunloungers are arranged around a stylish rooftop pool, which is illuminated with pale blue lights

Where to stay in Naples

The  AC Naples Marriott  opened its doors in 2023 and is a great option for a cozy yet luxurious stay. It’s just a five-minute drive to 5th Ave South, where you’ll find plenty of luxe boutiques and dining options. In the heart of Old Naples, this three-story property offers an intimate and boutique-like experience with excellent service, modern rooms, a rooftop pool and Mediterranean bar, Limón . A one-night stay will cost roughly $160–200.

If you’re looking for slightly more budget-friendly hotels during your stay, try the  Courtyard Naples (around $114–240 per night) or the  Residence Inn Naples (approximately $118–175 per night).

There are also plenty of lodging options for easy beach access, such as the  Naples Grande Beach Resort (roughly $197–235 per night) or the  Naples Bay Resort & Marina (around $190–219 per night.)

Top things to do in Naples

Explore the picture-perfect beaches.

Southwest Florida's beaches are certainly worth the hype, with plenty of gorgeous white-sand stretches to choose from. My personal favorite in Naples is, hands-down,  Clam Pass Park . It’s free to access (except for a $10 parking fee) and open to the public daily from 8am until sunset. When you first arrive, you’ll need to walk down a three-quarter-mile wooden boardwalk, which is more easily covered on the free tram service. The 35-acre beach features plenty of marine life and coastal birds. There’s also no shortage of activities like nature walks and fishing.

Despite the slightly overpriced beach chairs and umbrellas, this family-friendly beach has calm, blue waters and some of the most beautifully glistening seashells scattered across the sands. There’s also a snack bar, restrooms, bike racks and foot showers. Be sure to bring your own towels, though, as there aren’t any available for the general public to rent; they’re reserved for guests staying at beachfront resorts.

Other popular beaches to visit include Vanderbilt Beach, Tigertail Beach and Marco Island Beach. If you’re looking for dog-friendly beaches, take your pup to Bonita Beach Dog Park, Gulfside City Park Beach and Lighthouse Beach Park. Various water-based activities to try at local beaches include parasailing, jet skiing and dolphin spotting.

A pond filled with water lilies reflects the many tropical trees and plants that surround it at the Naples Botanical Gardens in Naples, Florida.

Enjoy some off-the-beach activities

If you’re a nature lover, head to the Naples Botanical Gardens  to see rainforest plants, succulent displays and waterlily-laden pools in tropical-themed gardens. They also host regular kid-friendly events and have a restaurant with garden views called the Fogg Café.

Popular festivals throughout the year include the  Naples Seafood & Music Festival , the  Naples Craft Beer Fest and Naples Downtown Art Fair .

Take a boat tour

If you’re looking for fun local boating experiences, La Gondola offers private tours in the heart of Naples on authentic Venetian gondolas – perfect for a romantic date night in the town. Another fun option is Naples Princess Cruises . You’ll want to book both in advance as they sell out quickly.

Eat and drink at Naples’ top restaurants

Campiello: If there’s one spot that will make you mistake Naples, Florida, for its Italian namesake, it’s Campiello . This award-winning Italian restaurant features a rustic contemporary menu with wood-fired meats and pizzas – get the Margherita.

D'Amico’s Continental Naples: This upscale butcher steak house restaurant was ranked not only one of the best in Florida but also one of the best in the country – and rightfully so. Commonly known as The Continental , this spot has a menu full of premium steak, seafood and cocktail options, as well as an impressive 39-page wine list.

Jane's Café on 3rd:  Included in nearly every Naples food guide and raved about by all the locals, the celebrated brunch spot Jane’s Café on 3rd  definitely lives up to the hype, from its “lobster smashed avocado Benedict” to its French toast.

Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila Bar: If you’re looking for something more casual, Rocco’s Tacos is a great choice for tacos, birrias, quesadillas and taco burgers. For anyone traveling on a budget, it also has regular happy hours and Taco Tuesdays specials.

A fountain with palm trees stands in front of a row of tall, colorful, European-style buildings

My favorite thing to do in Naples

As a cafe lover, I enjoy frequenting coffee shops everywhere I travel to enjoy a good cup of joe alongside the locals. Something about the ambiance and environment just makes me feel at home no matter where I am in the world.  EJ’s Bayfront Cafe  made for a simple yet lovely experience on a recent trip to Naples.

There’s often a short wait to get in, but the menu is a brunch lover’s dream, and it's known for having some of the best comfort food in town. It's just steps away from the ocean and has plenty of outdoor seating. A fan favorite is the banana-stuffed French toast platter with thick-cut challah bread, stuffed with sliced bananas and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. The food arrives extremely fast, and the service is top-notch.

How much money do I need for Naples?

Despite Naples being one of the most affluent towns in America, travel accommodations are fairly reasonable – especially if you limit excursions. Shopping at local boutiques will set you back the most, especially along 5th Ave South. Food and drinks are fairly priced, and the majority of restaurants don't have additional service charges.

You could easily plan a two-night stay for under $1000, including a roundtrip non-stop flight from New York City, for example.

Average costs:

  • Dinner for two: $80–215 (or more)
  • Brunch for two: $60–90+
  • Mid-range hotel off-peak, midweek in summer: $100–250+
  • Beer/pint at the bar: $7–10
  • Cocktail: $15–18
  • Ice cream: $6–8

Try this pro trick for an affordable and stress-free summer vacation

  • Travelers are facing high prices and crowds this summer.
  • The best way to get around the high prices and crowds: Be flexible.
  • There are ways to become flexible during the busiest travel season of the year, from planning your trip to the tools that get you there.

Life is full of compromises, and that will never be more true than when you're traveling this summer.

Flights will be packed. Just before Memorial Day, the Transportation Security Administration set a new record for most air travelers screened. It checked nearly 3 million passengers on May 24, surpassing the previous record set last Thanksgiving. U.S. airlines are projecting a record summer . They expect to fly 271 million passengers in June, July and August, up 6% from last summer.

Roads will be jammed. GasBuddy’s latest summer travel survey predicts 76% of Americans plan to take a road trip sometime between Memorial Day and Labor Day – up 18% from last summer.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

Hotels are full, too. Average hotel occupancy will rise to 63.4%, the highest level since 2019, according to the consulting firm HVS .

There's only one way to get around the high prices and crowds: Be flexible.

"With peak season prices, crowds, flight delays and more, your itinerary should be in pencil − not pen," said Bill Smith, CEO of Landing , a company that offers flexible rentals. "Being flexible can help to minimize your travel spend while maximizing your adventure this summer."

There are ways to become flexible during the busiest travel season of the year, from planning your trip to the tools that get you there. Being a more flexible traveler also means thinking about travel a little differently − bending but not breaking.

Should you repeat your vacation? Let's settle this once and for all.

Junk fees: Travelers are drowning in junk fees during the summer of surcharges

Ways to become more flexible this summer

So, how do you become more flexible? Here are a few examples:

  • Fly to another city. Sometimes, the place you're trying to visit is too popular − and expensive. That's what happened to Phil Strazzulla when he tried to visit Milan last summer. Airline ticket prices were more than $1,000. But he could fly to nearby Zurich for less. So he did. "Not only did this save us more than $300 for each ticket, but the drive over the mountains was spectacular," said Strazzulla, who runs a software review company. "Travel flexibility can result in cost savings − and a unique experience."
  • Go off the beaten path. Being truly flexible can mean getting outside your comfort zone. "Instead of Rome, Italy, go to the Puglia region," said Lynna Goldsby, a cruise planner with Travel With Lynna. "Instead of London, try Normandy or Bath." Trying these alternate destinations can still satisfy your travel itch but also reduce your expenses for lodging, restaurants, tours and transfers, she said.
  • Take a detour. Airfares are often less expensive if you fly out of the way through an airline's hub. Don't waste that opportunity, said Linda Robert, a travel coach with Back in the Groove Again. Airlines such as Icelandair, Qatar Airways and Copa have stopover programs that allow you to enjoy a day or two at their hubs before continuing to your vacation destination, often at no extra cost. "This strategy enriches your travel experience and offers a cost-effective way to see more places," she said.

Here are a few useful flexibility tools

There are a few new ways to be flexible.

For example, Landing, which is a favorite of digital nomads and location-independent workers, rolled out a new tool this week. Its 12-month Flex Stay program offers renters the opportunity to save up to 30% on monthly rates by committing to living with Landing for a year, which has locations in more than 375 cities.

"This new offering gives members the freedom to roam throughout our nationwide network of fully furnished apartments as much − or as little − as they’d like throughout the year," Smith said.

Another newish feature is Airbnb's flexible dates search , which lets you select a period of time rather than a specific date, to see more options. Airbnb introduced the feature during the pandemic, and it can help you save as much as 20% on vacation rental accommodations.

One of my all-time favorite tools is available on almost every self-respecting online travel site. It's the ability to search for airfares or hotel rates based on a more flexible schedule. Google Flights and Kayak are great at showing you more flexible options. Pro tip: Don't limit your flexibility to dates; select a region you want to visit, which may include an alternate airport.

Will new airline consumer protection rules help you when you fly this summer?

Tipping is 'not an entitlement': Should travelers stop tipping for everything?

You can also be flexible when it comes to the rate you pay, said Virginia Tech hospitality and tourism professor Mahmood Khan. Hotels cut their rates by about 20% if you pay upfront. (But you have to be sure you're going because those lower rates are usually nonrefundable.)

"At times, selecting a hotel away from busy destinations, yet comfortable for commuting, helps in finding an economical deal," he said.

But how do you put it all together this summer, including the flexible itinerary and the tools? Funny you should ask.

What are some more ways to increase your travel flexibility?

There are also new strategies to increase your travel flexibility, which can help you save money and a big headache when you're on the road.

"A critical skill is knowing how and when to put white space into your itinerary," said Stephanie Chastain, owner of Infinite Ireland Travel, a boutique travel consultancy. "A too-rigid schedule leaves travelers vulnerable to travel hiccups that disrupt well-intended plans."

What is white space? It's literally that − a blank page on your itinerary. An empty afternoon with free time. A leisurely breakfast instead of getting up at the crack of dawn for an all-day tour. It's a rest day every two or three days, to prevent yourself from vacation burnout and to give your schedule some wiggle room.

Even the experts keep relearning the lesson of flexibility. For example, I had to fly from Anguilla to Miami at the last minute recently, and the flights were crazy expensive − around $800 for a one-way ticket. Just as I got ready to book, I realized that Anguilla is a short ferry ride from St. Martin, which has more flights.

Total savings: $200.

Being flexible means thinking about travel differently from everyone else. It's the belief that there are many ways to get to your destination and that if you don't get there on the exact day your vacation starts, it's not the end of the world. Travel companies love sticking it to you when you absolutely must be in one place at a fixed time. Be a contrarian. But don't go too far.

Bend so you don't break

Some of the best travel advice for people who want to be flexible comes from veteran travel adviser Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. She told me lowering your expectations is one of the best ways to stay flexible.

"Life isn't perfect," she said. "Your trip will likely involve unforeseen and unpredictable events."

One more thing: Being too rigid is a recipe for a terrible trip. I've made that mistake before, and believe me, it's no fun.

You don't want to take it too far. By all means, schedule your flight on a weekday to avoid high fares. Try booking your flight by using one of the flexible fare features on Google Flights or Kayak, or check out Landing's new flex program.

But if you make too many compromises, it won't be much of a vacation. You'll end up staying in a motel in the suburbs, far away from all the attractions, and missing all the fun. Be flexible, but be smart.

Bend − but don't break.

I also appreciate all the pockets: The sizable laptop pocket is perfect for someone like me who uses a huge laptop; the eight pockets in just the front compartment are so handy for everything you could need while traveling; and the bag even comes with a zippered water bottle pocket on the side. – Leilani Osmundson

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack in blue.

Price: $185 or less

The Osprey Farpoint is truly an all-in-one travel pack that combines quality with minimal weight. The clamshell-style carry-on bag features a substantial main compartment across from a large mesh pocket. There's an easy-to-access zippered laptop sleeve on the side for devices up to 16 inches.

For extra support and comfort, the backpack includes a sternum strap, back panel, harness and hip belt; the latter three can be zipped up for fully streamlined travel, and compression straps help slim the bag down even more. The Osprey Farpoint 40 meets most domestic carry-on size requirements and is compatible with the Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack , which can be brought onto the plane as a personal item.

This is one of my favorite backpacks. I love how the back can be zipped up so the bag more resembles a duffel; this makes it easy to stow away without having to deal with a lot of straps. Additionally, the interior compression straps can really help cinch down belongings, especially if you're using packing cubes . – Leilani Osmundson

Solo Grand Travel TSA Backpack in gray.

Price: $117.99 or less

Perfect for weekend getaways , the Solo Grand TSA Travel Backpack opens like a regular suitcase. In the main compartment, you can secure several outfits with compression straps and store accessories and toiletries in two zippered mesh pockets. In the back, a padded compartment protects laptops up to 17.3 inches in size, and on the front there are a variety of pockets – even pockets within pockets – for your phone and other essentials. This backpack is also equipped with two side mesh pockets, a trolley sleeve, and side and top carry handles.

This backpack is flawless. It's big without the bulk and has plenty of pockets, which not only makes it ideal for weekend getaways but also prevents me from having to awkwardly rummage through my bag when I need something on the plane. – Amanda Norcross, Senior Content & SEO Strategist

TUMI Voyageur Celina Backpack in black.

Price: $475 or less

This backpack blends function and fashion with a compact design. On the front of the bag are two zip compartments and a U-zip pocket with a card slot, a slip pocket and a pen holder. The interior of the bag is divided into two separate compartments: one zippered section with a padded laptop compartment (holds up to a 15-inch PC or 16-inch MacBook), and another large compartment with a zippered pocket and two slip pockets (ideal for glasses or charging cords).

There is also a zippered compartment on each side of the bag, one of which has a water-resistant lining for a water bottle. On the back of the bag you'll find a hidden phone compartment and a trolley sleeve to attach to a roller bag.

This style oozes sophistication, especially the black with the gold hardware. From its sleek material to its many pockets and details, this backpack looks and feels like a chic handbag that can go from the office to a beach resort with ease. I especially like that there are two places you can access the front compartment of the bag, and I like that the laptop section is separate from the rest of the backpack so it's easier to take out my computer and go through airport security (which makes me less likely to drop something from inside my bag). – Rachael Hood

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L in black.

Price: $299.95 or less

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a solid, rugged choice that will last. The nylon canvas shell of the backpack is weatherproof and water-resistant, with a waterproof bottom liner as well. You can unzip the back panel to access the main packing compartment, which is also accessible via zippers along each side of the bag and can be divided in two by a mesh sleeve. To keep you organized, this backpack has quick-access pockets for small items like passports and glasses, plus expandable side pockets for water bottles, tripods or umbrellas.

The bag meets carry-on size requirements but can expand by 1.5 inches if you need the extra room; the shoulder straps and hip belt tuck away if you plan to check it instead. If you prefer a smaller bag, the Peak Design Travel Backpack also comes in a 30-liter size .

If you only want to bring one bag on a short trip, you can't go wrong with this backpack. It's sturdy, reliable and able to fit a ton while still being carry-on-sized. It served me well on a recent trip to New Zealand, and I'd definitely recommend it for travelers who like hands-free luggage. – Catriona Kendall

Kelty Redwing 36 in blue.

Price: $134.95 or less

If you'll be adventuring in the great outdoors for your next trip, consider purchasing the Kelty Redwing 36 backpack. You'll find two exterior water bottle pockets as well as a hydration-friendly inner pocket (for storing a water bladder). Tool loops can hold hiking poles, fishing poles, ice axes or other adventure gear. Organization is made easy with plenty of zippered pockets, including one on each side of the bag, a large one on the front and one on top that's perfect for storing travel documents such as a passport. Plus, a ventilated back panel helps keep you cool when you're hurrying through airports or hiking up a mountain.

If you need a bigger backpack, the Kelty Redwing 50 Tactical is a great checked bag option and has many of the same features as the Redwing 36 along with more straps and pockets.

The Kelty Redwing 36 can be cinched down quite a bit for truly streamlined travel and to better meet carry-on size guidelines. However, I'll caution that the waist belt is difficult to remove. – Leilani Osmundson

Samsonite Tectonic NuTech Wheeled Backpack in black.

Price: $159.99 or less

If you want the flexibility to either carry or wheel your luggage, a wheeled backpack style may work best for you. The Samsonite Tectonic NuTech Wheeled Backpack transforms from a rolling bag into a backpack by just tucking in the handle, pulling out the stowed straps and using the wheel cover. The durable polyester material is water-repellent and has red accents.

There are three sections to this bag: a main compartment with space to pack for a weekend trip, a dedicated sleeve for both a laptop up to 15.6 inches and a tablet up to 11 inches, and a front pocket equipped with various organizational features. There are various small pockets, pen sleeves, card slots and a key leash within. You can tuck a water bottle and umbrella into the exterior pockets on either side of the bag. Just keep in mind that this bag may slightly exceed carry-on size restrictions on some airlines with stricter rules.

I expected a wheeled backpack to be uncomfortable to carry, but this convertible bag has proved surprisingly convenient. I like having both the rolling and hands-free options for different circumstances, and it has ample packing space. – Catriona Kendall

augustnoa classic noa in cream.

Price: $148 or less

This sustainable water-resistant backpack is constructed with 100% recycled materials and has 10 pockets to organize everything. The spacious interior compartment has a 17-inch padded laptop sleeve and a tablet sleeve with a strap to secure it in place, as well as an interior mesh pocket for small items or charging cords and a removable shoe bag.

On the exterior, the front pocket has a built-in mesh organizer for pens, and there are mesh water bottle holders on each side of the backpack. The back of the bag has two adjustable padded straps, each with a built-in zippered compartment ideal for keys, ID or tickets. A hidden zip pocket makes for a secure space for a wallet or passport, and the trolley sleeve provides added versatility.

This backpack is great for travel or everyday use. I especially appreciate the comfortable backpack straps with the small zip pockets. They are easy to reach and perfect for small items like lip gloss, cash or a transit card. Durably constructed, the water-resistant exterior performs well in any weather, and I love that there's a padded space for both my laptop and iPad. – Rachael Hood

Monos Metro Backpack in Vegan Leather in brown.

Price: $230 or less

For an upscale backpack that can be dressed up or down, this Monos style is an ideal choice. Constructed with sustainable vegan leather (there's also a nylon version with vegan leather accents), this structured style is both water- and scratch-resistant. The 15-inch laptop sleeve is separate from the main packing compartment so you can access your device easily. The brand's QuickSnap Modular Kit System means you'll have a detachable Metro Kit for small items that attaches magnetically to the front of the bag; this kit is interchangeable between Metro bags and can be swapped out for a different kit or removed entirely, depending on your needs.

The backpack's main compartment is designed for maximum functionality with a felt-lined document sleeve, a large zippered pocket, two slip pockets, and a waterproof zippered privacy compartment for a rain jacket or gym clothes. On the back, you can make use of a hidden slip pocket for your phone, a trolley sleeve and adjustable padded straps. There's also two top carry handles if you'd prefer to carry this backpack like a tote.

I really like the elevated styling and durability of this vegan leather bag. But what sets it apart is the separate laptop compartment (I don't like to have to open my entire bag to get out my laptop while on the go), and the modular Metro Kit system that can be removed when it's not needed. It's full of value-added design elements, and the material looks classic and appropriate with any attire. – Rachael Hood

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on its size, a backpack is considered a carry-on item. To be able to put it in the overhead bin, you generally don't want it to exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches, but that sizing varies by airline, and since backpacks are soft-sided, the dimensions can be somewhat malleable. If it fits under the seat in front of you on the plane ( check your airline's specific size requirements ), it is typically considered a personal item. If the backpack can fit under the seat, then you can often bring it in addition to a larger carry-on bag (based on your airline ticket type and inclusions).

For a backpack to be a carry-on for most domestic airlines, it should not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (or should be able to be squished to approximately those dimensions). To be considered a personal item, it must fit under the seat in front of you. Underseat size and space varies by airline and airplane type, so it's best to check with your airline's size restrictions.
