Mackinac Island, Michigan

Step back in time on michigan's mackinac island.

Vehicle-free Mackinac Island – off the Michigan coast in the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron – has been a popular retreat since 19th-century industrialists built imposing summer "cottages" here, and remains serenely lost in time. The only way to get around is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage, as you make your way past impeccable Victorian mansions and out to the fringes of forest, marshes, beaches and 19th-century Fort Mackinac. The island is home to the palatial Grand Hotel, which lays claim to the longest porch in the world. Since 1887, the Grand has hosted many presidents, as well as the likes of Mark Twain and Thomas Edison (who first demonstrated his phonograph on the hotel's iconic porch).

Everyone traveling on an Intrepid trip must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of carriage. 

All travelers are required to produce: 

• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
• All children aged 5 to 17 years old must provide proof of vaccination (if eligible), proof of recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.
• If you are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons, you may apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. To apply, you must provide a medical certificate from a medical professional. 

In all cases, you must be fully inoculated. This means you must receive the full dosage of the COVID-19 vaccine and allow enough time for immunity to take effect. Each COVID-19 vaccine has different dosages and timeframes for inoculation, so please check the relevant medical advice associated with your vaccine.

How can I get to California?

Getting to California is relatively easy as there are a variety of options available including flying, driving, and taking public transport. You can fly into both big airports, such as LAX (Los Angeles), or small airports like Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) depending on which part of California you're traveling in. You can also drive to California if you're from a neighboring state (or want to go on an epic road trip) or you can take a bus or a train with several routes to all the popular destinations.

How do you get around Los Angeles?

Driving is the most time-efficient and popular way of getting around Los Angeles due to the city's size. While there is public transportation in the form of a bus network and the local metro, it's sometimes unreliable and can be quite time-consuming. Los Angeles is known for its crazy traffic situations, especially during peak periods of the day, so make sure you give yourself enough time to get around.

How far is Utah from California?

The time it takes to travel from California to Utah depends on how you're traveling and where in California you're traveling from. Flying is by far the quickest way to travel to Utah with a flight between LAX and SLC (Salt Lake City Airport) taking just under 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive between the two states for an epic road trip that's 12 hours long. If you were to take public transport between the two states it would be longer still but is a relatively cheap option.

Does it snow in Salt Lake City?

Yes, it does snow during winter in Salt Lake City. Snow is expected to fall between November and March but it's not unheard of to experience snowfall as early as October or as late as April. Salt Lake City is a great place to participate in winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and bobsledding, with neighboring mountains close to the city itself.

Due to New Orleans' geographical location, the weather can vary significantly during the year. Being near large bodies of water, such as the Mississippi River, the weather in New Orleans is often wet in the colder months and humid in spring and summer. You'll want to make sure you're as comfortable as possible while walking the many amazing hikes and trails in Yellowstone National Park so packing clothes, including hiking boots and socks, that you're familiar with is a must. Regardless of the season you're traveling in, the weather can be quite cold at nighttime so ensure you're packing a heavier jacket or coat to keep you warm. You should also pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and other items that will protect you from the sun during the day.

Planning a successful family vacation is work—but not if you let a packager do the work for you. Buying a vacation through a tour operator frees you from the tedious details of deciding where to stay, what to eat, when to visit each attraction, and how to get to each place. Travel packagers take care of all the logistics, and truly expert ones know their destinations deeply, so their inside knowledge may even be able to provide you with special perks. Austin Adventures keeps groups small: It aims for a 6:1 guest-to-guide ratio and vets those guides for charisma, making sure the leader has a personality kids will want to follow. Family groups explore Europe, New Zealand , Latin America, and North American national parks (a company specialty). Austin excels in outdoorsy outings such as horseback riding, glacier trekking, kayaking, and bicycling (always on trails, never on highways). The company strives to add excitement with what it calls unexpected “wow moments”—like the reward of ice cream and brownies served after a hike to the top of Angels Landing in Bryce National Park. Many trips follow a 6-day/5-night schedule plan, although international tours are longer. On departures for families with teens, expect more pedaling, paddling, and hiking to panoramic views, such as in the San Juan Islands , Yellowstone National Park , and the Kenai Fjords region.

Tauck , founded in 1925, launched Bridges in 2004 to cater to the family market through deeper cultural experiences. On Tauck’s increasingly popular European river boat family departures (the company owns its own vessels), visit multiple destinations but unpack only once. In port, you and your kids bike through the countryside, learn to make marzipan, and visit a Camargue ranch to meet cowboys and their legendary white horses. On board, kids fly kites, cook with the chef, and learn local phrases. For cruises, Tauck adds three guides and a family host to the ship’s standard staff. For land trips, one driver/escort leads.

Originally known as R Family Vacations and rebranded as KelliGregg Travel in 2022, this inclusive company gears trips toward LGBTQ+ travelers and their kids, friends, relatives, and allies. In addition to expanding its offerings for grown-ups, KelliGregg continues to organize its summer highlight under the R Family banner: a big cruise featuring show tunes, LGBTQ+ comedy acts, family dance parties, theater camp, outdoor adventures, and a lot more.

There’s something special about having a friend in a foreign destination. Thomson Family Adventures creates that connection with Friends Across Borders, a digital pen pal initiative available for families who book many of its trips. Your kids correspond ahead of time with local children whom they then meet during the journey. In places with scarce internet and computer access, ground partners personally print and deliver messages. The goal is to immerse kids in the culture, whether it's through activities such as swimming with whale sharks in Baja , sailing in Ireland , or hiking in the Andes (pictured). Some trips cater to families with teens or multigenerational participants. On departures with more than eight people, a Rafiki (Swahili for friend) travels along to keep the kids engaged. Trips always have one driver and one guide.

Among the more than 50 itineraries in over 40 countries visited by  Adventures by Disney , you can count on getting hands-on local experiences, guides with a gift for storytelling, and time built into the schedule for parents and kids to be both together and apart. You and your children might craft bento boxes at a Japanese cooking school, try archery at a Scottish estate, and learn hurling in Ireland. At other times, adults might sample wines at a vineyard in Tuscany while kids are taken to pick herbs for infusing olive oil. During adults-only dinner nights, kids grab a meal and watch a Disney movie. Daily activities are focused on local culture, not Disney characters—although you may expect a few surprise appearances from those along the way. Tours of Southern California grant private access to the Walt Disney Studios & Archives and Jim Henson Studios, which are normally closed to the public. In Europe, Disney partners with AmaWaterways for river cruises. Overall, many ABD trips are 8 days/7 nights, but the company also operates shorter Escapes that can be booked on their own or added to an itinerary.

The Sierra Club , one of the oldest U.S. conservation organizations, calls its trips “adventures for a cause.” By leading organized rafting, hiking, canoeing, and volunteering vacations for families, the Sierra Club connects kids to the outdoors, hoping to turn them into future protectors of the environment. Family excursions explore the United States: Wind down rivers in Utah, Oregon, and Idaho (pictured); or base your brood at an Adirondacks’ lodge for hiking, canoeing, swimming, and mountain biking. On service trips you might do things like clearing trails in the Tahoe National Forest or working with animals on a Pennsylvania farm. On Sierra Club Outings, the naturalist leaders are volunteers.

National Geographic Family Journeys (in partnership with G Adventures) were launched in 2020 as a subset of Nat Geo's 300 or so vacations for a general audience. These family-specific itineraries are developed alongside experts such as scientists and researchers, who emphasize sustainability and supporting local culture. On these trips, you and your kids might taste-test noodles cooked by teens learning culinary arts in Hoi An, Vietnam (pictured); plant seedlings at a tree nursery in Costa Rica; or fashion your own Carnival mask in Venice . Pre-departure, parents receive field guides with advice on sparking children’s interest in the area, and kids get tips on photographic storytelling. The 7-day Southwest Highlights tour was amazing! Alex and Amber were terrific guides that helped to give us options to make the most of our time at each tour stop. They also took care of setting up camp most days and prepared great meals throughout the trip. The trip was well organized, and we stopped often during the drive. I recommend this tour to people who want an active vacation, checking a number of National Parks off their list, but don't want to do all of the research needed to make it happen.

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.

Your priorities change when flying with kids , and perks like advanced seat assignments, early boarding, and inflight entertainment may play a more prominent role than price when deciding which airline to fly. And when you're flying during a busy time of year like Thanksgiving or the winter holidays, choosing the best airline for your family matters even more. 

While every airline allows travelers to gate-check a travel stroller and/or car seat free of charge, not all airlines are the same when it comes to seating families together or keeping kids entertained at 30,000 feet. Here’s a look at the best U.S. airlines for kids and families, and the ways in which they go above and beyond both at the airport and in the air.

The best overall airline for kids and families, JetBlue is known for having the most legroom in coach of any U.S. airline, and that can make a big difference if you’re flying with a lap child . With an average seat pitch of 32 to 34 inches, JetBlue’s spacious seating means your family will have ample room to spread out and get comfortable during the flight.

Another reason why JetBlue ranks among the best airlines for families is its free inflight Wi-Fi and personal TVs at every seat that help everyone in the family stay entertained. Choose from live DirecTV, movies, or SiriusXM radio, with included kid-friendly programming such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Animal Planet. (Just remember to bring headphones that fit the little ones .) JetBlue is also generous with its snacks by providing an unlimited snack basket in the galleys after service is completed.

At JFK airport in New York, JetBlue’s Terminal 5 is set up with families in mind. There’s a pirate-themed playground near Gate 12 and an aviation-themed interactive play area near Gate 26. Alternatively, you could purchase a Blue fare, which includes full-size carry-on bags and advanced seat assignments, along with other family-friendly perks like no change fees. 

Pro Tip: When comparing prices on Google Flights , adjust the "Bags" filter to "1 carry-on bag." That way you’ll only see "Blue" fares on JetBlue.

2. Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines shares top billing as the best airline for kids and families. Internationally, it has fewer options than JetBlue, but within the U.S., Alaska offers more than 1,000 daily flights, including more nonstops from the West Coast than any other airline. Seattle is the airline’s primary hub, with others in Anchorage, LA, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon. Its route network extends into a lot of smaller cities via its sister airline Horizon.

Alaska Airlines stands out with its family-friendly offerings. It’s one of only three airlines to offer a family seating policy that guarantees that children under 13 will be seated with at least one adult on the same reservation at no additional cost. The airline also offers priority boarding for families traveling with kids two years and younger. 

On board, entertainment options (via inflight Wi-Fi on passengers’ personal devices) include a separate Kids Zone entertainment stream that includes audio stories, kid-appropriate movies and television shows, and educational shorts like ABCmouse. 

On the food front , there are the standard drinks and light snacks offered onboard at no extra charge. There are also preorder options (preorder two weeks to 20 hours before your flight) that include kid-friendly options like the Kid’s Choice Picnic Pack with items like Pirate’s Booty, granola bars, apple sauce, and a little toy to play with.

Alaska’s frequent flier program allows new parents to maintain elite status Mileage Plan benefits for an extra year with its Elite Leave Program. Its unaccompanied minor program, Junior Jetsetters Service , escorts solo-traveling kids between the ages of five and 17 and includes supervision at all times, early boarding, and a free meal on flights longer than two hours.

Though it's not a family-specific offering, Alaska's 20-minute baggage service guarantee is a sanity saver for families who check luggage. The airline promises that bags will be at baggage claim within 20 minutes of the plane's arrival at the gate, and if it's not, passengers are offered a $25 discount code or 2,500 bonus miles.

Another thing that sets Alaska apart from many other airlines is its Fly for All app (for iOS or via Google Play ), an app designed for traveling families, unaccompanied minors, and passengers with cognitive and developmental disabilities, including autism. The app is designed to help passengers understand the airport, boarding, and flight process before they even get to the airport to reduce travel anxiety.

3. Southwest Airlines

Best airline for families who need flexibility

If your family often travels with multiple checked bags or values flexibility above all else, put Southwest at the top of your list of family-friendly airlines. All of Southwest’s airfares include two free checked bags , and there are no change fees if something comes up and you need to change the time or day of your flights.

If you haven’t paid for Upgraded Boarding and your children are over 6 years old, you’ll want to check in exactly 24 hours before departure to ensure seats together. This is because the boarding order is determined by when you check-in.

Of course, as with any ultra-cheap airline, extra fees are plentiful with Frontier. But there are ways to mitigate the extra fees, especially when traveling as a group. By joining Frontier’s Discount Den membership ($59.99 annually, plus a one-time $40 enrollment fee), you’ll be able to purchase discounted fares for up to nine people on the same reservation. And you’ll have access to exclusive sales such as Frontier’s frequent kids-fly-free promotions, where one child under 15 can fly for free for every paid adult fare.

Families can often share bags to reduce fees, and it may even be worthwhile to purchase tickets at the airport to eliminate Frontier’s online booking fee, which can add up to $46 per person each way. The larger your family , the more you can save if it’s convenient enough to buy tickets at the airport.

5. Delta Air Lines

With its best-in-class experience among U.S. legacy airlines, Delta is the large U.S. carrier most likely to deliver a good experience to traveling families. With hubs in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, LA, Minneapolis, New York (JFK and LaGuardia), Salt Lake City, and Seattle, it’s well-positioned to serve cities around the country and the rest of the world.

Delta has a host of offerings families will find helpful, including discounted tickets for children with a pricing structure that depends on the age of the child and the destination of the flight. Delta’s family seating policy isn’t a guarantee, but the airline does say that it "strives to seat family members together upon request," and that if you can’t get seats together when you book, you should call the Reservations line (800-221-1212) to "review available seating options."

The airline also checks strollers and car seats for free (curbside, at the ticket counter, or the gate). If you book a seat for your child – or if there’s an open seat in your row – you can bring a car seat on board, as long as it’s Federal Aviation Administration-approved. In addition to your carry-on allowance, you can also bring baby packing essentials like a booster seat, infant seat, and/or breast pump/cooler bag for free.

As part of its entertainment offerings, Delta has a whole suite of kids programming, including movies and kids shows from the likes of Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon.

For infants, Delta offers free onboard bassinets (SkyCots) for babies up to 20 pounds and 26 inches. Each flight has a limited number of SkyCots, so it’s important to request one in advance by contacting the Reservations line and then speaking with a gate agent at the boarding gate. 

Delta’s unaccompanied minor program offers passage for up to four kids together for a single fee and includes an employee escort, barcoded wristbands that track them on their journey, the chance for guardians to escort the minor to the gate, and at some airports, access to a kids-only lounge. 

Delta doesn’t have restrictions on flying if you’re pregnant and doesn’t ask for medical certificates for pregnant women traveling, though the airline does suggest that if you’re eight months pregnant or more, you check with your doctor before flying.
