The medieval tour of florence: not just renaissance.

The Medieval Tour of Florence will let you discover the most ancient soul of this city: the guilds, the tower-houses and Dante. We will see its towers, the city’s guilds in the church of Orsanmichele, the medieval Palazzo Davanzati, and Dante Alighieri ’s neighborhood. This is a tour for those who want to get to know Florence a bit better, instead of only scratching the surface. It’s highly recommended for children and families. Florence is widely known as the cradle of the Renaissance. However, it is in the Middle Ages that the base for the flowering of the Renaissance art in the 15th century was laid. How was the life of a medieval merchant? Did people live with all the comforts of our modern houses? How long people could expect to live in world dominated by pestilence, war and food shortages?

DAVANZATI PALACE & ORSANMICHELE CHURCH

Firstly, we’ll tour together Palazzo Davanzati . It houses the Museum of the Old Florentine House. In the in the past it was the residence of the rich Davanzati family. Thanks to the Medieval Tour of Florence, we will discover the medieval way of life, when the houses were tower-shaped and therefore not very comfortable. At the time strolling along the streets was unsafe. The windows were not covered with glass and only the rich families could afford a well. A visit to Davanzati Palace is a proper jump back in time! Secondly, we head to Orsanmichele Church . It was originally the granary of Florence. It was later converted into a church under the patronage of the Florentine Guilds . They were also in charge of the maintenance costs and donated the statues of their patron saint. These statues are now located in the external niches. The Guilds commissioned the statues to famous artists, such as Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Filippo Brunelleschi and Giambologna. Walking along the narrow streets around Piazza della Repubblica, we can find the seat of some guilds by looking at the names of the streets!

DANTE ALIGHIERI & HIS DISTRICT

This is the area where this great poet lived. In the small Santa Margherita dei Cerchi church he married Gemma Donati, and this is also where his beloved Beatrice Portinari was buried. During the fights between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, Florence was not a safe place and this is why many fortress-like houses were built. Indeed, the tower-houses served as a defence. When a family fell into disgrace, there were some people, known as the Buonomini (the Good Men), ready to help. We will see how all this happened in the Oratorio dei Buonomini (the Oratory of the Good Men) .

Why you choose this Tour!

  • Because to intimately understand Florence, it is essential to know its medieval history.
  • Because every time someone refers to the Middle Ages as the "Dark Ages", I get goosebumps.
  • Because I went on TV talking about the Oratorio dei Buonomini!

Medieval and Renaissance Florence complete Walking Tour

Your easy & complete Walking Tour through Medieval and Renaissance Florence starts from the characteristic central market neighborhood, with its workshops and multicolored stalls, where the Medici Chapels and the Basilica di San Lorenzo - the family church of the Medici - are located.
Just a few minutes walk away, you'll reach the Piazza del Duomo, where you can admire the Cathedral, including a visit of the inside, and its dome by Brunelleschi, the bell tower by Giotto, and the Saint John Baptistery with its magnificent “Gates of Paradise”.
Your tour continues with a visit of the medieval neighborhood where Dante Alighieri and his adored Beatrice lived.

From there, you'll discover the Palazzo del Bargello, which now houses the National Museum. Only a few minutes walk through the lively streets, and you'll find yourself on the famous Piazza della Signoria, with the 14th-century Loggia dei Lanzi (also called Loggia della Signoria or sometimes, after its architect, Loggia di Orcagna), Florence's most captivating outdoor sculpture gallery. The Piazza della Signoria is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio, which is lined with a series of sculptures, including the life-sized reproduction of Michelangelo's David – arguably the most famous sculpture of all time. The Palazzo Vecchio's famous neighbor, the Uffizi Gallery, is one of the most important museums in the world.
Your guide will then take you on to the picturesque Mercato della Paglia (Straw Market), which dates back to the 11th century. It received its lovely Renaissance Loggia during the 15th century and has since then been called the “New Market.” This is where the famous “Piglet Fountain” is located, a Renaissance copy by Giambologna's student Pietro Tacca. The piglet is dear to the Florentines who rub the bronze boar's shiny snout for luck.
Your path through the heart of Florence next takes you to the Ponte Vecchio, the “jewels bridge” across the Arno river. Be prepared for stunning views onto the city - and into the windows of the jewelry shops that line the bridge. By crossing the Arno, you will reach the Oltrarno district and Florence's princely Pitti Palace - once home to the Medici, the Lorraines, and the Savoy Kings of Italy - where your tour ends.

Palazzo Davanzati: Medieval cuisine and domestic affairs

The museum and furnished nobleman's home, Palazzo Davanzati in Florence Italy, is charged with atmosphere and charm, holding the secrets regarding domestic life in the middle ages. Inside you will find rooms adorned with antique furnishings once used for meetings, a small private study, dining room, bedroom with original wall decorations and the lively kitchen suggesting the bustling variety of domestic tasks.

firenze medieval tour

A Museum to Stoke the Imagination

The Palazzo was built around the mid-fourteenth century by joining together a number of tower-houses and other properties belonging to the rich Davizzi family. In 1578, the palazzo was purchased by Bernardo Davanzati , a successful merchant as well as a famous historian and intellectual.

The Palace represents a stage of transition between the closed, vertical structure of the medieval tower-house and the more spacious Renaissance palazzo, arranged around a central courtyard. On the ground floor, the façade features three large wooden gates , once used as an open loggia to host chats, commercial trading, waiting room and playground for family children. Leading up from the courtyard, supported on projecting flying buttresses, is the staircase : in stone up to the first floor and made of wood further above. Each floor features spaces dedicated to the private life of the family.

Stepping Back in Time

The walls of the main rooms and the exquisite bedrooms were decorated with frescoes and in winter covered by tapestries to keep the warmth in. Several rooms feature entirely painted walls, displaying geometrical motifs, birds and heraldic devices suspended from rings and lined with vair (“vaio”, fur from grey squirrels). Up high on the walls, a painted arched loggia offers trompe l'oeil views over gardens with plants and trees.

Hint: Great adventure for kids. I was only seven when I visited the Palazzo for the first time. It was absolutely love at first sight. I was astonished by the colorful walls, by the painted parrots, the curious tools next to the fireplace in the large kitchen. A walk through the Palazzo was my first trip back into the traditions of ancient merchants, of cooks preparing Medieval meals from ingredients purchased at the nearby Mercato Vecchio and of the echoes of domestic life and marriage taking place in a noble Gothic house.

The most interesting fresco decoration is inside the private bedroom named “ Camera della Castellana ”. The upper part of the walls feature a pictorial cycle of narrative character: around the entire wall, there are arches of a loggia with a garden forming the background to the various episodes of the courtly tale of the Chastelaine de Vergy .

The subject is a moralistic tale of love and death which was very well known in the 14th century in Florence. The tale derives from a French chivalric romance of the thirteenth century and tells about two couples who meet among citrus gardens, held conversations amongst towers and lush trees until there is just one of them, but no spoilers here!  Go to Palazzo Davanzati to discover who survives !

The frescoes of the Camera della Castellana were created for the marriage of Paolo Davanzati and Lisa degli Alberti , which took place in 1350. They still inspire poetry and and an intimate romantic atmosphere.

In the kitchen, decidedly the more curious of the rooms for those who enjoy the Florentine recipes, besides pots and pans and the crockery, are utensils such as a citrus fruit squeezer, a corkscrew, a dough kneader and a grain mill used to separate the flour from the bran, a copper cauldron and an eighteenth-century churn for making butter.

The same room also displays various tools used for weaving (skein winder, loom) and for sewing.
The fireplace equipment in the kitchen and the other rooms is completed by andirons, utensils for use on the fire and wafer irons dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Jugs, bath tubs and pitchers and buckets made of copper and zinc for hygiene and the various needs of the home are distributed in several small bathrooms.

How about a few Surprises?

The absolute modern concept within the Palazzo is expressed by the presence of an internal well , the rare “agiamenti” ( toilets ) on all floors, the well-equipped kitchen on the third floor, all perfect comforts for the noble family living at Palazzo Davanzati in medieval times! On each floor, water could be drawn from the well through an opening in the wall (fitted with doors so the well was hidden, also kept children out). In the large basement area, a tank was used for the collection of rainwater.

Each room shows the culture, refinement and taste of the ancient owners.

The collection of lace and embroidery holds a special place among the various types of furnishings and accessories (which includes majolica, furniture, sculpture and paintings) housed in the museum. Some of the typical female domestic crafts include christening outfits with delightful gowns, coquettish bonnets and the most exquisite cushions.

A Great Gift for the Remembering the Past

The furniture currently present in Palazzo Davanzati has no relation to the history of the building and the families that owned and lived in it. It was acquired through donations or on the antiques market specifically for the furnishing of the Museum; although not all the pieces are the originals of the palazzo, they do suggest the decor of a typical residence and also its evolution over time.
Among the furnishings are chests that were used as containers for clothes or linen or for precious objects.

In 1904, the Palazzo was purchased by the great antique dealer Elia Volpi , who first opened it up as the “Museo dell’Antica Casa fiorentina”. It was a stunning example of displaying objects he was selling, the exquisitely “Florentine” taste of the brilliant private dealer, memorable rival to the well known collector Stefano Bardini (whose palazzo is on the other side of the Arno and also a museum today). During the first half of the last century, the Palazzo lived through a series of sales, purchases and bankruptcies of antique dealers, until it was bought by the State and opened as a public museum in 1956 .

I find Palazzo Davanzati one of the most enjoyable and fascinating museums of Florence. I consider it as a magical historic bond with the Middle Ages, while its decorated colorful walls are simply outstanding…

Last but not least, the view from the top “altana” floor from the open loggia is truly marvelous and represents the symbol of wealth of Gothic Florence.

A journey through medieval florence.

The oldest depiction of Florence. Painted by Bernardo Daddi in the 13th century. Museum Bigallo, Florence. - Source: Wikipedia

Florence is known as the cradle of the Renaissance, but it was the wealth amassed in the Middle Ages that made this golden period possible.

More than 800 years have passed since the Middle Ages, and not much is left in the city from that period. Many buildings were demolished, especially in the second half of the 19th century when Florence became the capital of Italy and a major redevelopment of the city was carried out.

I went looking for traces of Medieval Florence with a tour organized by Artemide , a collective of five young city guides.

Old market square by Fabio Borbottoni (1820-1902) – Source: Wikipedia

Wealth through trade

The tour started on Piazza della Repubblica , the ancient heart of the city where in Roman times the forum was located. In the Middle Ages, it was the location of the main market square. Our guide Dasha led us through streets and over squares that are closely connected to the medieval history of Florence. She vividly told about life in the narrow streets of the medieval town where the houses were built so close together that sunlight could not even penetrate. Due to the lack of hygiene and the absence of any form of sanitation, the people suffered from all kinds of diseases and epidemics, and the stench must have been unbearable.

In addition to the existing social classes of the clergy, military and civilians in the Middle Ages, a new class of merchants arose that brought great wealth. This new bourgeoisie lived on their own squares and to protect themselves against attacks by feuding families, they built towers in which they could retreat.

In the Middle Ages about 150 tower houses rose in Florence, now there are 50 left , some still stand on their own, but most have been absorbed by other buildings. The towers could reach up to 70 meters in height, but in later centuries, all towers were shortened to a maximum height of 30 meters. The entrance was via a staircase on the first floor. In case of emergency, the stairs could be taken down fast, leaving the family safe in its tower during an attack. Wooden bridges connected the towers making it possible to move between buildings. Most families had multiple towers in their possession.

Important families in the 13th century were the Donati, Cerchi, Macci, Adimari, Amidei and Ricci.

Piazza dei Tre Re and Vicolo dell’Onestà

The first square that we visited on our quest for the Middle Ages was Piazza dei Tre Re , the Square of the Three Kings, named after the tavern that was once located there and that was known for its deep-frying. In Florence many streets and squares got new names over the years, but under the new name you can often find a sign with the old name. This square was once called the Corte De ‘Macci , the domain of Macci family. The only thing that reminds of their power and wealth is the Torre de’ Macci .

Torre de' Macci

There are still a number of medieval alleys, including Vicolo dell’Onestà between Piazza dei Tre Re and Via dei Calzaiuoli. The alley was named after the Magistrate of Honesty seated there which dealt with the regulation of prostitution, such as prices, locations and the paying of taxes.

Torre degli Adimari

The area around Via dei Calzaioli and the Duomo was the domain of the distinguished family Adimari. Only two towers are left of the various buildings that the family owned: Torre degli Adimari in Via dei Calzaioli.

Torre degli Adimari

Piazza Santa Elisabetta

Vicolo and Piazza del Giglio

Passing through Vicolo del Giglio we ended up at Piazza del Giglio , here are no historic buildings, but this square and the nearby Via del Campanile is the setting of a ghost story. I will tell all about in a later article.

The next stop was Piazza Santa Elisabetta , where the oldest tower of Florence can be found: Torre della Pagliazza . The foundations of this tower rest on the circular structure of a Roman bath, while the tower itself probably dates from the 6th century. In the 13th century, the tower housed the women’s prison; the name of the tower is derived from the straw mats where the prisoners slept (paglia = straw).

piazza Santa Elisabetta

The Torre dei Ricci-Donati can be found on the left site of the square. It’s evident that the entrance was on the first floor; on the ground floor there was room for stables or workshops. The Medieval towers had small narrow windows that in the course of centuries have been replaced by larger windows.

Torre dei Ricci-Donati

Donati, Cerchi and the Vicolo dello Scandalo

After the civil war between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, won by the Guelphs in the second half of the 13th century, it seemed as if peace had returned to Florence. It didn’t take long however until a huge fight started between the Donati and the Cerchi , both Guelphs. The quarrel led to the separation of White (Cerchi) and Black (Donati) Guelphs. It did not help that both families lived in proximity to each other and the battle turned violent and bloody. The city council decided to separate the two territories by creating an alley between Via del Corso and Via degli Alighieri. The alley was first called Vicolo del Panico (Panic Alley) and was later renamed to Vicolo dello Scandolo (Scandal Alley).

A fence on both sides usually closes off the alley, but when we were there, the gates were open. Although it would have contributed to the medieval experience, we decided not not to go through it and to walk around it instead.

vicolo dello Scandalo. Entrance in via del Corso, exit in via degli Alighieri.

The domain of the Donati family was located around via del Corso where the Torre de’ Donati and their own square Piazza de’ Donati can still be found.

The famous poet Dante Alighieri did not have any sympathy for the rich Florentine families, and he wrote about many of them in his Divine Comedy. His statements about these families can be found on the facades of the buildings that still bear their names.

Torre de’ Donati and piazza de’ Donati

The rivaling family Cerchi lived only a few blocks away. The Torre de’ Cerchi is one of the few towers that have not undergone major changes and still looks pretty authentic with its small, narrow windows. A little further on the corner of Via de’ Cerchi and Via de’ Cimatori you can still find the coat of arms of the Cerchi family recognizable by the three circles (cerchi means circles). It is also the place where their loggia once was.

Torre de’ Cerchi

Torre della Castagna

Another well-preserved tower is the Torre della Castagna (Chestnut Tower) at Piazza San Martino. The tower was built in 1038 and in the 13th century, it housed the priors of Florence. Its name comes from the chestnuts that were used for voting.

Torre della Castagna

Ponte Vecchio

The tour led us further over Piazza della Signoria and via Calimaruzza , where the wool and fabric traders were located. Their guild weapon can still be found on several buildings.

calimaruzza

The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge that was spared during the withdrawal of the German troops; all other bridges were destroyed. The streets that gave access to the bridge were destroyed in order to make the bridge inaccessible. Therefore, the area around Via Por Santa Maria, which leads to the Ponte Vecchio, consists of almost exclusively post-war buildings.

An exception is the Torre degli Amidei. An important Florentine family whose blood revenge on the young Buondelmonte the ‘Buondelmonti was the spark that ignited the war between Guelphs and Ghibellines. To appease an earlier incident between the two families, a marriage was arranged between Buondelmonti and a girl from the house of Amidei. But the young man broke the wedding agreement after he fell in love with a girl from the Donati family. On Easter morning of the year 1216, he rode his horse across the Ponte Vecchio and passed the Amidei tower on the way to his wedding. There the Amidei family pulled him off his horse and cut his throat.

Torre-degli-Amidei

Torre degli Amidei (left) and a medieval painting of the murder Buondelmonte de’ Buondelmonti.

The Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345 after its predecessor was washed away during the great flood of 1333. A memorial plate on Ponte Vecchio is a silent reminder of this major disaster. Another Medieval remainder is the sundial located directly below the hatch on the wall.

ponte-vecchio

Borgo San Iacopo

We ended the tour in Borgo San Iacopo on the south bank of the river Arno.

Torre dei Belfredelli is one of the tallest surviving towers of Florence characterized by the small garden on its side towards Borgo San Jacopo. The top floor of the tower was added well after the 14th Century.

Torre dei Barbadori is just across the street. This tower was built in 12th Century by the Barbadori a prominent family of merchants.
