Casual Eats with NLEX Lakbay Norte in Tarlac

Table of Contents

T arlac has always been known as the go-to stopover destination for everyone who’s traveling to Baguio , La Union, or Ilocos. Well, those days are nearly gone because Tarlac is already developing to be one of the must-visit travel destinations up north! Luckily, I’ve been invited by the NLEX Corporation to go on a quick tour in Tarlac as part of their goal of promoting rising tourist attractions in the North. But this isn’t a simple tour! No, because this is an amazing Tarlac Food Trip with NLEX Lakbay Norte!

NLEX Lakbay Norte in Tarlac

A lot of people say that food is such an important part of traveling, some even say that it is the best part of it! Well, I wouldn’t dare to disagree because I believe that eating has always been the best and fastest way to appreciate any travel destination. Luckily, Tarlac is just a couple of hours away from Manila via NLEX and SCTEX!

Suit yourselves because we are definitely going to have a great time as NLEX Lakbay Norte takes us on an exciting gastronomic adventure while enjoying the rich culinary scene and beautiful cultural heritage of Tarlac!

Aquino Center and Museum

Our first stop is no other than the Aquino Center and Museum which is easily accessible right from the Luisita Exit of SCTEX. Nestled in Barangay San Miguel, Tarlac City, this non-profit and non-government museum houses important photographs, personal belongings, and other memorabilia of the Aquino Family. From the late national heroes Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, President Corazon Aquino, and their son President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino,  a huge chunk of Philippine history lies in this very establishment.

Bloodied Clothes of Senator Ninoy Aquino

The Aquino Center and Museum are well-funded by the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation, which means that entrance to the museum is free but donations are much appreciated.

Razon’s by Glen and Halo Cafe

Apple and Peach Waffle

Next up, there’s no better way to start off our adventure than by having a sumptuous breakfast offered at Razon’s by Glen and Halo Cafe! This beautiful gem is a restaurant and coffee shop in one where guests are welcome all-day. We’ve sampled lots of their best-selling breakfast meals such as Tapsilog, Tocilog, and a bunch of sweet and savory waffle meals including the Tuna Melt Waffle, Spam Waffle, and Apple & Peach Waffle. You can also try out their Pasta and Burger meals which are all reasonably priced and delicious!

Diwa ng Tarlac

Paintings from various artists from Tarlac

After eating, it’s best that we walk around and explore for a bit first before going on another gastronomic adventure, right? Well, that’s why we’ve decided to visit the famous Diwa ng Tarlac along Romulo Boulevard. It’s a community center with a beautiful display of Tarlac’s rich culture where guests can enjoy and witness paintings, photographs, and sculptures that are all proudly created by local artists.

There’s also a large exhibition on the lower ground floor featuring beautifully-designed wedding gowns, wedding photographs, and other services from local wedding organizers and suppliers.

Yoo Ja Ne Korean Grill and Restaurant

Samgyeopsal in Tarlac

Alright, it’s time for yet another exciting food trip! Our next stop is at one of the most popular and rising food hubs in Tarlac right now, the Fairlane Boulevard. Filled with small restaurants and local food stalls, I’m sure that you’ll be able to satisfy all your cravings here. For lunch, we visited the newest foodie hotspot here named Yoo Ja Ne Korean Grill and Restaurant.

This Korean Grill serves a wide variety of all-time favorite Korean specialty dishes like seaweed rice mayo, crispy samgyeopsal, ramyeon, japchae, and many more. It’s an authentic Korean food trip experience. The restaurant is owned and operated by a Korean Chef and his Filipina wife. Oh, and don’t forget their crispy and cheese Korean Corndogs. Trust me, they’re simply the best!

Kart City Tarlac

Kart City Tarlac

Ah, after a satisfying lunch at Yoo Ja Ne Korean Grill and Restaurant, we still have time to go for another fun and adrenaline-pumping adventure! That’s why we’ve decided to visit the famous Kart City Tarlac or KCT. This is a nice spot to enjoy quality time with family and friends as you show off your Go-Kart driving or Pedal Driving skills on their 700-meter racetrack!

While taking a break, you can also grab a quick bite at Chap’s Diner and try their awesome snacks like Nachos, Bagnet, Sisig, and many more.

The Borough Pizza Pub

The Borough Pizza Pub Salad

After Go-Karting all afternoon, we visited yet another hidden culinary gem along Bypass Road. The Borough Pizza Pub is a rising star in Tarlac offering irresistible pasta and pizza goodness. Their meals are famous for their big servings and exceptional taste!

Some of The Borough Pizza Pub’s best-selling flavors include the Queen Elizabeth Pizza, Chicken Pesto Pasta, and BBQ Bacon Beef Burger Pizza. Partner any of these sure-win pizza flavors with their Hail Kale Smoothie and you’re good to go!

Finally, to cap off our gastronomic adventure here in Tarlac, we’ve decided to enjoy yet another belly-busting feast at the one and only The Boss Rotisserie by Mang Ben’s Lechon. We sampled almost everything on their menu and believe me, everything on their menu are all worth trying. Our orders include Boss Fried Rice, Mixed Seafood Gambas, Lechon Shawarma, Aligue Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet, Pancit Canton, Lechon Sisig, and of course, Mang Ben’s Lechon!

All of these mouthwatering dishes are definitely delicious and a must-try, but my favorites are Lechon Shawarma, Boss Fried Rice, and definitely Mang Ben’s Lechon.

Whether you’re in search for a restaurant in Tarlac or going on a food crawl, you will not only fill your tummy but you will have something to take home with you as well.

Sometimes it’s nice to just drive the neighborhood and eat your way around. Certainly, Tarlac food trip will have something to satisfy your craving from Filipino dishes to native snacks and more. Make sure to bring a hungry tummy and prepare yourself for some of the very best restaurants in Tarlac City.

Table of Contents

With a casual vibe, Tatuns is a restaurant in Tarlac that serves ultimate Filipino comfort food. Among their bestsellers are their kambing (goat) dishes like Adobong Kambing, Kalderetang Kambing, and Kampukan. You will not find it easy to convince me to eat goat meat but the way Tatuns prepared theirs was really good.

Restaurant in Tarlac - Tatuns

Adobo and Kaldereta are some classic Filipino cuisines and Tatuns gave that exotic twist by using goat meat. And I will never get tired of saying I love their Papaitan – it was the right mix of sour, bitter, and spicy! Yum! You can’t say you’ve had a Tarlac food trip without trying Tatuns.

Your Tarlac food trip will definitely be not complete without visiting a charming cafe in the neighbourhood. Kape Agape located in the Ylang-ylang town of Anao is indeed a fabulous surprise for coffee lovers like me. Its warm and creative ambiance suits spontaneous, fun conversation with your friends.

Kape Agape

Aside from coffee, they offer pasta, nachos, and desserts – all good! They also serve pansit with noodles made from malunggay and squash. Kape Agape is your friendly restaurant in Tarlac that supports mental health advocacy and the arts.

Betty’s Resto Bar

If we’re talking about sticky rice cakes, then Betty’s Resto Bar will be your best restaurant in Tarlac City. Sticky rice cakes are among the classic Filipino desserts and Betty’s did delectable justice in serving them. While Duman is their bestseller, I also equally like their Tibok-tibok that is like maja blanca but with carabao’s milk.

Betty’s Resto Bar

There is more to their menu and their place has that “instagrammable” atmosphere. For the best native cakes in town, Betty’s Resto Bar should not be missed in your Tarlac food trip.

Sapin-sapin

Betty’s Resto Bar Address: San Roque, Tarlac City Contact No: (045) 982 0465

La Boneteria

If you are like me who can eat bread at any time of the day, La Boneteria’s malunggay pandesal and bonete are for you. Eat them while hot! You can just make a quick stop at their store on your Tarlac food trip.

Malunggay Pandesal and Bonete

La Boneteria Address: Villa Zarraga Subdivision, San Vicente Tarlac Contact No: (045) 923-1098

Bonnette’s BBQ Grill

With a cool, al fresco ambiance, Bonnette’s BBQ Grill suggests a good hangout place for group of friends. Their barbecue and homemade vinegar for the win! Bonnette’s BBQ Grill is situated just next to La Boneteria. Believe it or not, we got to try the barbecue and pandesal combo. And it just works!

Rustica Restaurant

For a cozy restaurant in Tarlac, Rustica Restaurant is there to serve you. With elegant wooden interiors, it’s a place you’d want to reserve for special occasions.

My top favorites: Cream Dory wrapped in Bacon, Spicy Prawns, and Barbecue Beef Ribs with Black Pepper Sauce.

Binallay Grilled Suman

Suman is another type of sticky rice cake popular in the Philippines. It is wrapped in banana leaves and is usually steamed. Another version is the grilled one which I love and Binallay Grilled Suman has them. You definitely have to grab some if you go on a Tarlac food trip.

Mango Products from Hardinero Agriculture Cooperative

Ahhh fresh green mangoes!!! I am drooling just thinking of them with bagoong . Another version, Green Mango Pickles or Burong Mangga is just as good. Especially the one from Hardinero Agriculture Cooperative because the vinegar they used to soak the mangoes with is Mango Vinegar. They also sell Mango Jam.  These are products you certainly want to bring home from your Tarlac food trip.

Zwitoffer Leche Flan

One of the most favorite Filipino desserts, Leche Flan is always served during special occasions. It is simply made from eggs and milk with a soft caramel on top. Leche Flan is prepared on llanera or baking pan but Zwitoffer’s version is made on the eggshell itself. Even without the caramel, Zwitoffer Leche Flan is still luscious and what I really like about it is that it’s not overly sweet. It is another delectable treat to take home from your Tarlac food trip.

eating there is like eating in your own home but being attended well. they serve local and western dishes, but i prefer those like home-cooked meals. the food taste very good. well, the ambiance is really cozy and "homely" since it is originally a two-story house made of wood (traditional style) then converted to a restaurant. cost of food is more expensive compared to other food establishments.

If the only basis of my rating is food, then i give it a five star score. The lechon manok was perfect, juicy and tender. The pork sisig was just as great; especially when complimented with their condiments. Service was fast despite the jampacked lunch time crowd. Parking was sufficient, at least 15 vehicle parking space. The ambiance was like having a meal at a makeshift canteen. The washroom needs little improvement. Overall, a highly recommended restaurant. Will be back.

So much of the seafoods and other Filipino cuisine, the taste was just ok, and the shrimp was delicious. Out of others, nothing special. Too bad to experience the bad service.

I have been frequenting Cafe Teodora (the main dining area of L Square Hotel) for quite some time now (usually on business trips), and it never disappoints. The place is small, very intimate, but nicely and minimally decorated. The staff are very attentive to the preferences of regular customers; in fact, they already know by heart that I want my water at room temperature :) Location is great too, as it is accessible and easy to find. (By the way, I can't help but mention that it's great that even though the property is along MacArthur Highway --which is always a busy road -- you rarely, if at all, hear vehicle noise when inside the hotel rooms.) Everything is delicious at the Cafe Teodora (formerly L Square Restaurant), but I have to specifically mention their Spicy Spare Ribs, Chicken Pork Adobo (variant in the breakfast menu), Special Pancit Bam-i and the L Square Burger. Glancing at the menu, you would think they are expensive, but that is just so WRONG! Most of the items in their menu can serve 2 to 3 persons, thus you get your money's worth. TRUST ME. They are currently re-branding and revising their menu, but luckily, I heard they are retaining my favorites :) :) :) Writing this review makes me drool.

The coffee is great if a little costly...the craft beer even better but expensive. It has a very pleasant clean ambiance - tastefully presented by smiling attentive staff. The bread baked on the premises is wonderful but be careful they sometimes tell you the bread is fresh that day when it's already a day old!!!! The cakes and gateaux are wonderful.

Reviewed By KathyLouReyes - Pasig, Philippines

The place is in need of more renovation and modernization, but the saving grace would be the warm, hospitable, helpful staff and its cleanliness. I think the hotel has potential to be better, if the management paid more attention to detail. For one, there was no door greeter. There were still left-over red strips of crepe paper attached to thumbtacks on the wall, from who knows how many events ago; they were using tattered, very visible, green nylon string to open the lock on one of the function room main doors; the knob of the door was falling off and was attached with clear, packing tape; the white chair coverings, again while clean and washed, is already showing signs of age; no paint peelings as the place does look like it’s been re-painted; the new aircon is hidden while the old but still working aircons look like they’ve been battered for years and have survived a flash flood with some yellowed paneling falling apart already. The projector we rented was fairly new. There are a few cracks on the floor; but the café’s décor tiles look new and the pattern is neat and pretty. The bathroom for the handicapped had no toilet roll holder or toilet paper; but the female washrooms did, with a mirror that is also in need of replacing ( it has the black spots that come with age ). The food could also be better – Maja club was ok , but again could be better if they used better bread. I liked their Dinamite and chips but their chili con carne tasted more like the Filipino sweet spaghetti sauce. The taste of their grilled chicken was good but it was tough. And their buttered veggies seemed to be the frozen type, but it had the taste of butter instead of being blanched so I was alright with it. Last of all, was our Account Executive who was very accommodating and chill, though I wish she would answer her phone more promptly as she seems to leave it elsewhere, and there have been a few errors that caused delays in our transaction, but I would overall recommend her and am very grateful for her service. She has always informed me of when she had to go on leave and has always tried her best to fulfill our requirements. The technicians and servers were also professional and on-hand. I would also recommend this hotel, despite it’s hiccups. I think if more people used it, more income would flow in and they would use the profit to renovate. It already feels like they’re renovating what they can when they can, which is great.

I love that more restaurants in the Philippines are embracing the full range of Filipino produce, even things like saluyot that are sometimes seen as lower-class foods. I learned a lot about cooking with ingredients like these during my travels in the rural areas and I've really been wanting to apply them to Western cooking techniques, so it's cool to see that some people are already doing that!

When In Manila Search

#foodtrip: there’s a hidden cafe in tarlac that you should check out.

Last weekend, I had a quick road trip back to my home province, Tarlac. I spent the weekend with my family since I haven’t been home for quite a while. We spent the day hanging out at the mall, watching the latest installment of Spider-Man (yay!), and of course, dining out.

Hidden somewhere in the middle of the tree-lined complex of Luisita, along McArthur Highway, we visited a nice cafe that doesn’t only serve coffee but some comfort food as well.

Cafroozzo  is a local neighborhood coffee shop and restaurant that is intrinsically from Tarlac. Unlike the huge coffee chains that we have in almost every corner in Metro Manila, Cafroozzo is the brainchild of a couple, Nelson and Carolina Ramos, from my province.

We were invited to check out the restaurant. We arrived a little after lunch, which is a perfect time for coffee. But as I’ve said, they serve more than coffee so we were able to try some of their food as well.

We sat beside this Instagrammable wall. I know a lot of us love to take selfies that we can share on social media and this is one of the best spots in the restaurant.

_cafroozo ig wall

Cafroozzo has the Hawaiian Burger. We asked them where they get their patties from and they told us that they make them. What’s different on this burger compared to an average burger, it comes with a generous slice of pineapple. We can say that it is the restaurant’s personal take on the Amazing Aloha – if you’re familiar with that now-defunct Jollibee burger.

_cafroozo hawaiian burger

The Hawaiian Burger comes as a meal served with a side of fries and iced tea of the day.

The restaurant also has the Pinoy breakfast staple  tapsilog.  However, unlike the savory  tapsilog that I was familiar with, their version called Beef Tapa Rice was a bit on the sweet side. It is still good though and the garlic sauce that it is served with brings the dish a notch higher.

_cafroozo beef tapa rice

A good deal for their Beef Tapa Rice was to get brewed coffee for just 8 pesos.

The Cafroozzo pizza is a fully-loaded pizza with slices of ham, pepperoni, olives, and bell peppers. It is topped with a generous amount of cheese.

_cafroozo pizza

We also dug into their serving of ribs. Like the Hawaiian burger, it comes as a meal with rice and iced tea of the day.

_ cafroozo ribs

They also served us with Buffalo Wings. It could have been a little spicier, but overall it’s okay.

_cafroozo buffalo wings

We are already a bit full but we soldiered on to still try their super cheesy lasagna.

_cafroozo lasagna

Of course, we wouldn’t miss trying their selection of frappes. We tried the Black Forest, Chocolate, Caramel, and Matcha.

_cafroozzo frappes

We also tried the hot Cafe Mocha.

So, if ever you are in Tarlac, why not check out this hidden cafe in Luisita. They also have other branches in SM Tarlac and Citywalk.

TARLAC TRAVEL GUIDE | Itinerary + Map

Tarlac Travel Blog Guide

The province of Tarlac in Central Luzon is really not known for tourism. In fact, some people even dub it, jokingly, as the toilet stop of Luzon—the area being frequented only by motorist needing to relieve themselves on their way to another province. But my visit to Tarlac opened my eyes to its many tourist spots and food places unknown to most travelers in the country. Tarlac has a lot of tourism potential—it has historical places, museums, adventure parks, religious destinations, hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, and gastronomic places. With this travel guide, allow me to help you to get lost in Tarlac.

UNDERSTAND TARLAC

Tarlac Province

HOW TO GET TO TARLAC

Tarlac province is located in the region of Central Luzon. It is a mere two to three hours ride by bus from Metro Manila. Numerous buses with terminals in Cubao, Quezon City (Victory Liner, Five Star, Baliwag Transit, Genesis, JAC Liner), and Manila (Philippine Rabbit, Viron, Genesis) pass by the province through the NLEX. Fare for an aircon bus is usually pegged at an average of ₱250.00, depending on what town you’re gonna get off. As of this writing, there are no operational airports in the city, the nearest one being Clark in Pampanga.

HOW TO GET AROUND TARLAC

The main mode of transportation to get around in most towns in Tarlac is the tricycle. The minimum fare varies for each municipality. To move from town to town, there are jeepneys, e-jeeps, and mini-buses. Note that for San Jose, public transport are few and far between since most residents use their own private transportation.

SPEAK TARLAC

Kapampangan and Ilocano are the common dialect in Tarlac. Although most, if not all, Tarlaquenos speak and understand Filipino and English. Note the translations are in Kapampangan first and Ilocano second.

ORGANIZED TOURS IN TARLAC

There are a few local tour operators that you can tap if you don’t want to do a DIY Tarlac tour. I actually recommend joining a local tour especially if you don’t have a car, since most of the tourist spots in Tarlac are a bit far from each other. Here are a couple of recommended ones:

Markyance Travel & Tours Contact Number: (0917) 516-5656 Excursionista Travel & Tours Contact Number: (0918) 611-1115

WHERE TO STAY IN TARLAC

Tarlac isn’t really a tourism hub, so guesthouses, inns, and hotels are not that numerous compared to other places. Although the concentration of lodgings are located in the center of the province, Tarlac City, one can still find a few lodging houses and resorts on the province’s outlying towns.

Hotels Tarlac

WHERE TO EAT IN TARLAC

Tarlac is said to be a true melting pot of Pampango , Ilocano , Pangasinense , and Tagalog people . So I guess it isn’t really that surprising that the province has a lot of good restaurants lining its streets. What surprised me though was the level of choices they have, from street food, to local delicacies, and all the way to fine dining.

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN TARLAC

Before visiting Tarlac, the only tourist spot (if you really can call it that) I know in the province is the iconic Jesus sculpture at the Monasterio de Tarlac. But Tarlac has so much more to offer, especially for nature and adventure lovers (although I have yet to cover their hiking trails and waterfalls). For the culturally inclined, museums, churches, historical sites, and ancestral houses are always available for visits.

WHAT TO BUY IN TARLAC

You won’t go home empty-handed when visiting Tarlac. The province has more than a few local delicacies that you can bring back home as pasalubong . Most of these are readily available in Tarlac City and one recommended shop is at Centro Pasalubong de Tarlac . They have a good selection of OTOP products from local farmers and cooperatives which range from foodstuff like goat/carabao milk, local chicharon , muscovado sugar, bugnay juice, sweet potato wines, kesong puti, hipon chips, to the usual keychains and ref magnets.

TARLAC SAMPLE ITINERARY

The whole Province of Tarlac covers an area of 2,737 square kilometer. That is a huge, and creating an itinerary that would cover all the tourist spots in the province seemed impossible. What I present here instead is a trip itinerary we did during the Tara Quin Tarlac familiarization tour, with Tarlac City as our base. This is entirely doable, provided you have your own transportation with you. If you’re not bringing a car with you, my recommendation is to avail of packaged tours being offered by local tour operators (see Organized Tours section above).

► DAY ONE Morning arrival in Tarlac City Check in at Hotel Breakfast at King Burger Visit the Aquino Center and Museum Lunch at the V.E.S. Foods Visit the Aquino Ancestral House Visit the Capas National Shrine Dinner at Dampa sa Tarlac

Established in 2001, the monastery was built 300 meters uphill on the Zambales Mountain Range at Mount Resurrection Eco Park, Barangay Lubigan, San Jose, Tarlac. The Capas National Shrine was built by the Philippine Government to remember the deaths of thousands of soldiers at Camp O’Donnell who were forced to walk over 83 kilometers, from Mariveles and Bagac, up to San Fernando.

The shrine features 54 hectares of parkland containing memorials for the dead, a 70-meter obelisk, and 3 memorial walls where the names of Filipino and American soldiers who died back then were engraved. To reach the twin falls, cross the Nambalan River for 20 minutes and trek for about 4 hours to reach the Kawayan campsite. Rest for the night, and trek again the next day to reach ANZAP Twin Falls.

7. Mount Telakawa

Other than river adventures, Tarlac boasts the majestic beauty of Mount Pinatubo that erupted back in 1991. And if you’re in search of a thrilling activity in the area, there is no better place to visit than to hike and camp at Mount Telakawa. Located at the foot of Mount Pinatubo, Mount Telakawa measures 645-meter elevation, featuring the breathtaking view of Mount Pinatubo and the surrounding lahar land.

A tour uphill will consist of trekking, exploring an Aeta village, visiting a goat farm where hikers get their water source, and camping at the summit. So a trip to Mount Telakawa is an exciting and refreshing experience.

8. Aquino Center Museum

For history enthusiasts, visit the Aquino Center Museum situated at Hacienda Luisita, San Miguel to learn and recollect Philippine history. If you’re looking for extreme outdoor activity, hiking up Mount Damas is the place to go. Mount Damas is one of the most picturesque mountains and a major hiking spot in Tarlac. The hike will take about 1-2 days or 4-5 hours, and will involve trekking at steep routes, rivers, rappelling down a waterfall, and crossing roped segments to the site. It is also rated with 6/9 difficulty to hike up Mount Damas, measuring 685 meters above sea level. So ensure that you’re all geared up before hiking.

Mount Damas

There are also rivers along the trail, nipa huts for resting and has a scenic view of the Central Luzon Mountains. Mount Damas is accessible through San Clemente Dueg Resettlement, the major jumpoff point, or can be accessed at the alternate route at Barangay Papaac, Camiling Tarlac.

11. Ubod Falls

A must-stop for all hikers heading to Mount Damas, Ubod Falls is a 120-foot tall straight waterfall hidden in the mountain. To reach the site, follow the river track upstream where you will see two small waterfalls. The one is shorter and the taller curvy one is known as Si-el Falls.

Ubod Falls

Credit: Leana L via TripAdvisor

It will require climbing rope segments on the left side of Si-el Falls to reach Ubod Falls, which will be challenging for the less physically fit. From Si- el Falls, it will take around 15 minutes to witness the enchanting beauty of Ubod Falls. This spot is the perfect place to cool off and enjoy a dip from the cold water before heading down the jumpoff point.

12. Calao Falls

Another natural wonder tucked at the Mayantoc town, Calao Falls or Kalaw Falls, located at Barangay San Jose, is a popular tourist destination for hikers.

The spot is ideal for a short stop-over that can surely relieve stress. Calao Falls’s name came from the local Kalaw bird, or Rufous Hornbill, that once resides in the area now reported as endangered, and only a few can be spot on the Calao Falls. There is also a small waterfall hidden behind the granite rocks, where visitors can dive on a deep ravine.

TATUN'S KAMBINGAN RESTAURANTTatun's Kambingan Restaurant is for those looking for authentic tasting Tarlac and Filipino cuisine.  Especially known for its mouthwatering goat dishes, I had second thoughts whether I will enjoy eating here since I am not a fan of eating "exotic" food but I was proved wrong! You have to order their  Kalderetang Kambing, Spicy Goat Adobo, and Kampukan Kambing . Instead of the usual pork meat, they use goat meat to cook some of our all-time favorite Pinoy food.    Also, I super love  kare-kare , the peanut sauce is so thick and savory plus the meat is so tender.  I missed eating the  binuro or binurong isda   (fried fish served with fermented rice/fish/shrimp and boiled vegetable leaves) which was my favorite when I went to Pangasinan for a blogger trip as well.  Bulanglang Liempo and Angus beef  are some of the most recommended dishes to eat in Tatun's according to previous guests as well. I wish to order these when I come back in Tarlac!  Apologies, wasn't able to get the prices for the dishes I have mentioned. Feel free to contact Tatun's Kambingan through its Facebook fan page or phone number listed below.

Our 10 favorite travel hacks

Want to travel better? The Upgrade has your back.

food trip tarlac

The Upgrade is By The Way’s series offering guest writers a place to share their travel hacks and hot takes. For every edition, illustrator extraordinaire Min Heo animates the advice. Below are some of our most popular entries. Some may look basic, but ask yourself: Are you optimizing your travel routine?

Want to write your own Upgrade? See how to submit here .

Dress up for your flight

David Coggins longs for the Cary Grant era of aviation, wishing more passengers would step up their game to bring some dignity and glamour to the experience. The author of “ Men and Style ” argues that making a sartorial effort shows respect to gate agents and flight attendants in uniforms — and your fellow passengers.

“I realize this is a losing battle, but it’s still a good fight,” Coggins writes. “If a sweatsuit is your truth, then there’s nothing else I can say, other than nobody has looked good in a sweatsuit in the history of the world.”

He’s not sure if wearing that checked blazer will really get you upgraded to first class , but it couldn’t hurt.

Visit ‘second cities’ in Europe

Rick Steves is our favorite pétanque-playing philanthropist . He’s a respected travel expert, too. In his beloved Europe, Rick recommends you break up every visit to a capital with a final day in a “ second city .” Think Porto vs. Lisbon , Glasgow vs. Edinburgh and Marseille vs. Paris .

“While lacking the popularity and the bucket-list sights,” Steves writes, “Europe’s second cities tend to enjoy a creative edge, a strong civic spirit, a Rust Belt toughness, fun-loving eateries with cutting-edge menus, entertaining street art … and far fewer tourists, which also means lower prices, a more authentic welcome and arguably a more honest cultural experience.”

Pick your travel uniform

Like Steve Jobs and many practitioners of quiet luxury , travel writer Jessica Poitevien is all about eliminating decision fatigue. Standardizing a set of clothes only for flying doesn’t just help you streamline your packing routine. Poitevien “doesn’t worry about leaving anything important behind, because I have two of everything: one that’s for home and one that sits in my backpack waiting for the next trip. All I add is my passport, laptop and current reading material, and I’m good to go.”

What’s her uniform look like?

“My top is always a long, loosefitting T-shirt or sweater, so I’m covered through all the bending and lifting that happens with luggage and going through security,” Poitevien writes. “I add a jean jacket to stay warm on those freezing planes and use its inner pockets to keep my phone, passport and boarding pass within easy reach.”

Cut your airport arrival dangerously close

It’s not for the faint of heart, but travel writer Brad Japhe wants to waste as little of his life in airports as possible.

“I live about five miles from Los Angeles International Airport,” Japhe writes, “and if my scheduled domestic flight is at, say, 9 a.m., I’m comfortable entering an Uber up until 8:32 a.m.”

Besides some serious bravado, pulling this off requires the use of PreCheck or Clear, among other conditions:

  • Traveling solo .
  • Express security lanes .
  • Familiar airport.
  • No checked bags .

Order the Hindu meal

Food and travel writer David Farley thinks we should reject the binary of chicken or pasta in favor of a plant-based meal that exudes spice . By reserving a Hindu meal on your next long-haul flight, you could be treating yourself to dal makhani and naan, or bhindi masala and raita. As long as your reserve your meal at least 24 hours ahead of your flight, airlines told us, you won’t be taking a special one away from anyone else.

Get up early on vacation

Life is short. So take a cue from the dad playbook, and seize the vacation day with an early wake-up call . For Deputy Features Editor Amanda Finnegan , rising with the sun means hours of calm before your travel partners join you. And by 10 a.m., you’re ready for your first nap.

Make a fashion statement in black and blue

Rachel Tashjian ’s job is cooler than your job. As a fashion writer, she flies to Europe three or four times a year for work, watching extravagant clothes appear in fashion shows for weeks at a time . It’s a dream, but there’s an understandable amount of pressure to look amazing every single day. Enter the black-and-blue hack . By mixing a pop of navy in with a collection of dark pieces, you’re making the daring choice to break one of the primary rules of fashion.

Her packing list:

  • Two skirts: something that flows and something that hugs.
  • Three jackets: a classic blazer, something weird and an open-front wool jacket.
  • One pair of trousers.
  • One black dress.
  • Three T-shirts.
  • Black shoes.

Stop eating airport food

Noah Galuten is a hero hubby. By the simple act of making his wife a sandwich to take to the airport, the Los Angeles-based chef and author had the epiphany that we should all swear off precooked egg patties forever .

Sure, you could get settle for upcharged coffee, a Dunkin’ wrap or a sad Caesar from “Weirdly Branded Bar & Grill You Have Never Heard Of.” Or, you could be the game changer for your household, whipping up breakfast burritos or English muffin sandwiches — or just buying a better sandwich in advance in the real world (see: Emily’s Pork Store , Brooklyn).

Take a solo trip

The secret to a happy relationship is compromise. And giving your partner time to travel solo — especially if you’ve got a kid at home. That’s the philosophy preached by writer Austin Graff , an extrovert who has learned to appreciate the benefits of going it alone: It’s easier to get into top-rated restaurants, there’s time to wander and you return to your family more thoughtful and present.

Take a buffer day

The weekend-warrior routine is for people in their 20s. Once you’re in your 30s, Rachel Orr writes, you know well enough to quit pushing so hard and give yourself an extra day to chill before rushing back to work . “Think of it as a mini staycation at the end of your vacation,” she suggests.

A supermarket trip may soon look different, thanks to electronic shelf labels

Grocery store prices are changing faster than ever before — literally. This month, Walmart became the latest retailer to announce it’s replacing the price stickers in its aisles with electronic shelf labels. The new labels allow employees to change prices as often as every ten seconds.

“If it’s hot outside, we can raise the price of water and ice cream. If there's something that’s close to the expiration date, we can lower the price — that’s the good news,” said Phil Lempert, a grocery industry analyst.

Apps like Uber already use surge pricing, in which higher demand leads to higher prices in real time. Companies across industries have caused controversy with talk of implementing surge pricing, with fast-food restaurant Wendy's making headlines most recently. Electronic shelf labels allow the same strategy to be applied at grocery stores, but are not the only reason why retailers may make the switch.

The ability to easily change prices wasn't mentioned in Walmart's announcement that 2,300 stores will have the digitized shelf labels by 2026. Daniela Boscan, who participated in Walmart's pilot of the labels in Texas, said the label's key benefits are "increased productivity and reduced walking time," plus quicker restocking of shelves.

Walmart's not the first major grocer to make the change, as you can already find electronic shelf labels at Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh stores, and the Midwestern chain Schnucks. Digitized shelf labels are even more common in stores across Europe .

Another feature of electronic shelf labels is their product descriptions. Lempert notes that barcodes on the new labels can provide useful details other than the price.

“They can actually be used where you take your mobile device and you scan it and it can give you more information about the product — whether it’s the sourcing of the product, whether it’s gluten free, whether it’s keto friendly. That’s really the promise of what these shelf tags can do,” Lempert said.

As higher wages make labor more expensive , retailers big and small can benefit from the increased productivity that digitized shelf labels enable, said Santiago Gallino, a professor specializing in retail management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

“The bottom line, at least when I talk to retailers, is the calculation of the amount of labor that they’re going to save by incorporating this. And in that sense, I don’t think that this is something that only large corporations like Walmart or Target can benefit from," Gallino said. "I think that smaller chains can also see the potential benefit of it."

While the labels give retailers the ability to increase prices suddenly, Gallino doubts companies like Walmart will take advantage of the technology in that way.

“To be honest, I don’t think that’s the underlying main driver of this,” Gallino said. “These are companies that tend to have a long-term relationship with their customers and I think the risk of frustrating them could be too risky, so I would be surprised if they try to do that.”

Rather than seeing an opportunity to use surge pricing, Gallino says retailers are likely drawn to electronic shelf tags to ensure consistency between online and in-store pricing.

“Today, Walmart customers can check on their app once they’re in the store, the prices that Walmart is offering online,” he said. “And if there are discrepancies, this can bring frustration or make the customers get confused.”

Electronic shelf tags should make it much easier for brick-and-mortar stores to keep pace with prices as they change online. And, he says, that consistency should be better for customers.
