Our Planet Earth – Gaia
Wonder at Gaia - a mesmerising, seven-metre-diameter recreation of Planet Earth.
Gaia, created by British artist Luke Jerram, is a mesmerising seven metre diameter installation of planet earth. It features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface and has impressed audiences across the globe from as far afield as London, Hong Kong and Australia.
The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface. By standing 211m away from the artwork, you can see the Earth as it appears from the moon!
This permanent installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

A 3D Replica of the Earth is Floating in Kensington and Chelsea this Summer
Luke Jerram’s Gaia, the world-renowned miniaturized planet Earth that tours across the globe, is back in London this summer, at the Kensington and Chelsea Festival.
The internally-lit spherical sculpture is a helium-filled balloon.2.1 million times smaller than the real Earth. The artwork measures seven metres in diameter and it was created from detailed 120dpi NASA images of the surface of the Earth, as though seen from space.
At night or in darker spaces, its realistic glow showcases the Earth’s splendour and fragility, being designed to awaken a sense of awe for visitors of all ages as they consider their impact on the planet. This experience is known as the Overview Effect and it was first described by author Frank White in 1987. It refers to what astronauts feel when seeing the Planet from afar. This life-changing sensation is characterized by a deeper understanding of the interconnection of all life and a higher sense of obligation for taking care of the environment.
It is such a rare opportunity to admire a space perspective of the Earth! You’re invited to experience the Gaia Earth Sculpture in the following locations:
St John the Baptist Church, Holland Road, W14 8AH (Thursday 28 July to Saturday 6 August);
All Saints’ Church, Clydesdale Road, London W11 1JS (Tuesday 9 to Sunday 14 August).
Viewers will also enjoy a surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning Composer Dan Jones, which will be played alongside the installation.
Artist Luke Jerram said: “It's a great pleasure to present my artwork right in the heart of London for the Kensington and Chelsea Festival. I hope visitors to Gaia get to see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place. We have an ecosystem we urgently need to look after – our only home. Halfway through the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, we urgently need to wake up, and change our behaviour. We need to quickly make the changes necessary, to prevent climate change. There really is no Planet B!”

Would you like to see the Gaia exhibition the Luke Jerram Moon ? There are lots of events in London and all around the world to enable you to see this spectacle. The Gaia World installation is a touring artwork designed by Luke Jerram.
AD | I have been compensated, or could be compensated, if you click on a link in this post via a cash payment, gift or something else of value for writing this post. See our full disclosure policy and privacy policy for more details.
The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect. The Overview effect is an experience that astronauts feel when they see the Planet from space.
This is an amazing sight to see which also has a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones played along side the exhibit. The sculpture is a great artwork to visit for adults and children.
What is the Gaia Luke Jerram Moon all about?
The world globe exhibit of Luke Jerram is almost like a science experiment. But while being a spectacular look at our world, Gaia also delivers a very serious message.
Gaia creator Luke Jerram said: “The Gaia Earth artwork was made to communicate a sense of the fragility of our planet.
Why not visit some of Londons Famous Statues such as the Leicester square film Statues too!
“We need to wake up and change our behaviour. Society needs to quickly make the changes necessary to prevent runaway climate change”
Want to make it into a breakaway? Check out these amazing places to stay in London .
What is the Overview effect ?
This Overview effect was first described by author Frank White in 1987 saying it gave a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life. When astronauts saw Earth from afar for the first time, they described a cognitive shift in awareness after seeing the planet “hanging in the void.”
Some say “It’s the uncanny sense of understanding the “big picture,”
How big is the Jerram Moon exhibit?
The specatular earth globe measures seven metres in diameter. It was created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface seen from space. The stunning artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet from all sides floating in three dimension as an astronaut would see it. Whats more the Globe world exhibition has been set up in spectacular locations all over the world which really show it off to its full potential.
The art work is 1.8 million times smaller the the real Earth. The first time the Earth was seen in it’s entirety was in 1972 on the first space mission of NASA’s Apollo 17.
“I wanted to make Gaia as authentic and realistic as possible to give the public the opportunity to see how our planet looks from space” Luke Jerram
Where is the giant globe in London?
There are plenty of dates coming up in the Uk and all over the world. You can find out where the Giant Globe of the Gaia world exihibit is heading next on the Exhibition website .
It has already been shown in some stunning locations such as the Painted hall of the Royal Navy College in London. It was also shown at The Eden Project in Cornwall UK and even the Mattatoio in Rome. Gaia by Luke Jerram
Our display of Gaia ended on 4 September 2019. For details of our current exhibitions, take a look at our what’s on page .
We displayed Luke Jerram’s spectacular artwork Gaia , a detailed sculpture of Earth measuring seven metres in diameter.
We have gazed up at the Moon for millennia, but the first time humankind got to see the Earth in its entirety—as a ‘Blue Marble’ floating in space—was in 1972 with NASA’s Apollo 17 mission. Our perception and understanding of our planet changed forever. Hanging in the black emptiness of space, the Earth seems isolated, precious and fragile.
Gaia , a touring artwork by Luke Jerram, is a stunning replica of our planet, created using 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The sculpture provides an incredible opportunity to view Earth as it might be seen from space, floating in three dimensions.

Looking up at Gaia , some have experienced the ‘overview effect’. Author Frank White coined the term in 1987 to describe the cognitive shift experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from space. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface.
A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones will be played alongside the sculpture. In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth.
Gaia is only available to see during Abbey opening times . As an active working church in the community, at times the Abbey is closed for visiting. Please check before you visit for last minute variations.

Brisbane Festival and West Village present
An intimate encounter with our home planet.
Gaia acts as a mirror, a journey of discovery, and a warning. The viewer may experience a new perspective, a sense that societies of the Earth are all interconnected as well as the realisation that we have a responsibility to one another, to preserve, to protect.
Measuring 7 metres in diameter, Gaia is the second in a series of three awe-inspiring large-scale installations by Luke Jerram at West Village.
Here is your chance to see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place. An ecosystem we urgently need to look after — our only home.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
