Breathtaking scenery | Wildlife safari | Sun-soaked coasts | Active adventure

Klein karoo and the garden route: a road trip with detours aplenty.

T T he arid Klein Karoo ( ‘ Little Karoo ’ ) region of Western Cape province is home to many attractions just a short drive inland from the scenic Garden Route , which runs along the well-watered coastal plain south of the Karoo .

The Cango Caves, ostrich riding, Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, the Klein Karoo Wine Route, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Anysberg Nature Reserve and the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival are all good reasons to visit the area.

Regardless of whether you ’ re driving the Garden Route from Cape Town or Port Elizabeth, the Klein Karoo offers several detours north into the Cape Fold Belt mountains that are well worth exploring . The scenery is spectacular , and the locals in the small towns along the way are entertaining and welcoming .

A sparsely populated semi-desert , the Klein Karoo is a photographer ’ s playground, with spectacular sunsets that outline the contrasting landscape in stunning silhouette.

The Cango Caves are the only show caves in Africa that offer standard and adventure tours in English, Afrikaans, German and French. You can v isit these splendid caverns filled with stalagmites, stalactites and millennia-old rock formations any day of the year except Christmas Day.

The small towns of the Klein Karoo offer visitors several alternative activities , too.

Outdshoorn, a 45-minute drive from George along the N12, is home to more ostriches than you could ever imagine. At the Cango Ostrich Show Farm, guests who weigh less than 75kg can ride the ostriches, while others are welcome to hand-feed these curious birds.

Art and history lovers should visit Uniondale for a tour of the town ’ s South African War (1899 to 1902) forts and art gallery.

Some of South Africa ’ s best ‘fortified wine ’ ( definitely not ‘port’ , according to the European Union) now come from the town of Calitzdorp, 51 kilometres west of Outdshoorn. Visit Boplaas or De Krans to sample some of these delicious sweet vintages.

Other towns in the Klein Karoo worth visiting include Ladismith, De Rust and Dysselsdorp.

Who to contact

Oudtshoorn Info    Tel: +27 (0)44   27 9 2532     Email: [email protected]

Public transport in the Klein Karoo is very limited, so your best option is to rent a car at Cape Town International Airport of Port Elizabeth International Airport . This also gives you the freedom to explore whatever you want to, whenever you like.

Length of stay

Spend 3 days to a week exploring the Klein Karoo.

Where to stay

The town of George, south of the Klein Karoo on the Garden Route, offers a large variety of accommodation. There is also a range of guesthouses in Outdshoorn, Uniondale and Calitzdorp.

What's happening

The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival usually takes place in early April. Held in Oudtshoorn, the week-long festival features various exhibitions, dramatic productions, musical performances and discussions.

In The Know

About garden route & klein karoo.

A 200km kilometre stretch of coastline from Mossel Bay in the west to Tsitsikamma in the east, the famed Garden Route is a highlight on most visitors’ itineraries. Two vastly different geographical areas running parallel together, contrasting yet complimenting.

The lush, green Garden Route hugs the coastline on its southerly length, its tropical vegetation and brilliantly coloured fauna and flora are offset sharply by the semi-desert, ostrich farming Klein Karoo and the vast, copper coloured plains of the Central Karoo on the northerly length.

The Garden Route is a bewitching world of indigenous forests, sea villages, freshwater lakes, picturesque settlements, golden beaches and mystical mountains. Tourists flock here to bask on the beach in the summer months, watch the ever-increasing numbers of migrating whales in the winter months, play golf, sail sleek yachts and indulge in fine food and wine.

Towns worth mentioning are Oudtshoorn, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, use these as a base to explore the many attractions in and around the area. From the unique interaction with Meerkat’s at sunrise to tasting the famous Knysna Oysters at sunset.

A self-drive holiday is the best way to experience the wonders of the Garden Route.

Garden Route & Klein Karoo

The Garden Route region is a 300-kilometre stretch of the South-Eastern coast of South Africa, which extends from Witsand in the Western Cape to the Tsitsikamma/Storms River in the Eastern Cape. It is one of the most beautiful coastlines in South Africa and about a 400km drive (± four hours) from Cape Town to Mossel Bay. The Garden Route includes towns like Stilbaai, Albertinia, Heidelberg, Riversdal, Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. It runs parallel to the coastline featuring mountains, lakes, rivers, indigenous forests and beaches. There are various leisure and adventure activities to choose from on the way, making it one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country.

The Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) is a spectacular 350 kilometre long valley stretching from Montagu in the west to Uniondale in the east, and is almost completely surrounded by mountains. The Klein Karoo is only between 40 and 60 kilometres wide, sandwiched between the imposing Swartberg Mountains in the north, and the continuous Langeberge and Outeniqua Mountains in the south. The main town is Oudtshoorn and other towns in the area include Ladismith, Calitzdorp, De Rust and Barrydale. Highlights of the region include the Cango caves and ostrich farms at Oudtshoorn, the Swartberg Pass, and Meiringspoort Gorge at De Rust.

A popular route to travel to the Klein Karoo is via Route 62 . This tourist route was named for the R62 provincial road between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It meanders through Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route and the Addo Elephant Park, spanning a distance of 850km. Also known as the Wine Route, Route 62 leads through the wine-growing areas of Tulbagh, Wellington, Paarl, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein Karoo and is thus one of the longest wine routes in the world. The majestic mountains, rivers, scenic passes, orchards and vineyards, as well as the multitude of attractions, offers you an unforgettable experience.

05 December 2022 WELCOME TO THE GARDEN ROUTE AND KLEIN KAROO, SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AREA

garden route and klein karoo tourism

WELCOME TO THE GARDEN ROUTE AND KLEIN KAROO, SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST BEAUTIFUL AREA

My warmest welcome goes out to all visitors to our region. Here you will find seven (7) municipalities with their respective local tourism offices keeping our region on the map. Areas are known as Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Oudtshoorn and Kannaland. Each town has a myriad of unique offerings.

I’m honoured to boast that 19 of the 51 Blue Flag beaches in the country are located in our region this year. This means that we have the most Blue Flag beaches out of any other municipal area in South Africa! Our region’s beaches comply with strict standards of excellence in safety, cleanliness, amenities, environmental information, and management.

Let’s take a closer look at some of our areas. Zooming in on Hessequa, we see that all six (6) of its beaches have received Blue flag status. Additionally, they offer off-the-beaten-track experiences like Big 5 Game drives, forest glamping, fynbos gin, award-winning olive oil, cheese, wine, and aloe products.

Knysna is the most deserving winner of the KFM Best of the Cape Award known as the ‘Dorpie van die Jaar’. It is also the 19 th most-loved destination around the world according to the 2021 Tourism Sentiment Index!

Plettenberg Bay has been nominated as a Whale Heritage Site and extensive work is being done by all stakeholders public and private with regard to their Marine and Ocean Economy.

Taking a glance at George, which is the central entry point to the region and boasts of the world’s top signature golf courses – it is indeed a golfers’ paradise!

With over 1100 meters of over-the-ocean zipline in the “Iconic Mossel Bay”, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the scenery. Zipline over the ocean at speeds of up to 80km/h and enjoy unparalleled views of the cliffs, ocean, and sea life. On the other side of the long stretch of mountain ranges, you’ll find the Klein Karoo which offers the largest cave system in Africa – the Cango Caves. Calitzdorp, located next to Oudtshoorn is also known as the port capital of South Africa – for good reason.

Our region is safe and offers wonderful forests along the coast with well-maintained boardwalks through thick forests, across gentle streams. Annually I also encourage visitors to also seek the little adventures offered by our region. One example is our region’s rich coffee culture, which offers a unique social setting and interaction between connoisseurs.

We promise you that tourism activities are right on your doorstep in this region.

To learn more about what we have on offer visit our official regional tourism website at www.visitgardenrouteandkleinkaroo.com

Finally, while enjoying your time with us, you need to be tolerant while travelling. Please obey speed limits; road rules; do not text or call while driving; do not drink and drive, and always wear a seatbelt. Save our 24/7 emergency call centre number if you find yourself in a troubling situation – 044 805 5071.

See you on the beautifully, diverse Garden Route and Klein Karoo!
