'Best Season So Far': Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Actor Teases Upcoming Episodes

The acolyte gets review bombed, setting unfortunate star wars record, new tales of the tardis hints at major doctor who finale twist.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody," now streaming on Paramount+ .

The Strange New Worlds musical episode was full of emotion, often expressed against a character's will. This is why it's important that La'an got to tell James T. Kirk about her feelings in spoken dialogue. Kirk didn't even have to say the thing about La'an liking Carol for Star Trek fans to know who he was talking about. But, for those who've only discovered the franchise through Strange New Worlds , Carol Marcus is a big deal to Jim Kirk and Star Trek .

In keeping with franchise history, Strange New Worlds is a series that frustrates shippers. The only relationship currently underway is Spock and Chapel's, which The Original Series fans know doesn't last. Yet, even though she doesn't know it, there's still hope for La'an and Kirk to explore their feelings for each other. This moment is less about Kirk than it is about the Enterprise's security officer. From the series debut until "Subspace Rhapsody," she's been on her own journey. When she introduces herself to people, all they hear is "Noonien Singh" and think of Khan. The Jim Kirk she fell for had never heard that name. While she's aware the real Kirk isn't that man, La'an wants the chance to be seen that way again. So, while she's perhaps written off Kirk for now, she shouldn't. As important as Carol Marcus is to Star Trek , her time with James T. Kirk is likely near its end.

How Strange New Worlds Perfectly Lines Up With The Wrath of Khan

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , audiences meet Dr. Carol Marcus, the leader of the civilian-run Genesis Project. It is meant to be a mechanism of life, but La'an's ancestor Khan wants to use it as an engine of death. In a way, Carol Marcus is the J. Robert Oppenheimer of Star Trek , but only if he wasn't aware he was about to become "death, the destroyer of worlds." Yet, more important to Star Trek fans is Carol Marcus, the mother of David Marcus, Kirk's son. While this may have seemed like the inevitable result of Jim Kirk's eagerness to fall in love , the relationship with Carol Marcus predated The Original Series .

While she's a brilliant scientist, Carol Marcus is also "the one that got away" for Captain Kirk. When he reunites with her in the film, he tells her he "stayed away like you asked." David's existence surprised fans, but Kirk knew he had a son. He didn't know what he looked like, though. The two fought when they first met, but he knew David's name. While the Star Trek timeline is convoluted , it does make sense that David was born before Kirk took command of the Enterprise. The Wrath of Khan is a study of aging, so David and Carol represent the life Kirk almost had.

On a rare occasion of studio penny-pinching helping a movie, the original opening of The Undiscovered Country had to be cut. Of all the original characters, Kirk's retirement was the least disappointing. Even though David died in The Search for Spock , he and Carol were living together on Earth. Of all his many romantic entanglements, Carol Marcus is the love of James T. Kirk's life. Well, after the USS Enterprise, of course.

Carol Marcus Is the Most Important Person in James T. Kirk's Life Outside the Enterprise

Carol only appeared on-screen in The Wrath of Khan , yet her absence in The Original Series and the successive films looms large. Knowing Kirk had a one-true love that didn't work out informs much about his character. The Kelvin Timeline films took place in a different continuity, but Carol Marcus played a significant role in Star Trek Into Darkness, another Khan story . Interestingly, her relationship with Kirk amounts to mere flirting. The filmmakers were likely saving that for a future film that never came. Marcus ends up on the Enterprise, but three years later, during Star Trek: Beyond , she's no longer onboard. Also, as a crew member, it makes her relationship with Kirk problematic at best.

What the Kelvin Timeline Kirk has in common with the Kirk in Strange New Worlds is that both feel adrift. Kirk didn't truly become the best version of himself until he captained the Enterprise. To borrow a term from Across the Spider-Verse , Kirk choosing Starfleet over Carol is a "canon event." In The Wrath of Khan , David doesn't remember Kirk when he meets him. It's also unclear if David knows Kirk is his father or merely figures it out by the end. This all adds up to Kirk being out of Carol's life, at her request, before David develops object permanence.

Captain Kirk's reputation as a philanderer is overblown, mostly from 57 years of parody. Kirk is looking for love. Fans already know he doesn't find it with Carol Marcus. Perhaps he does find it, if only briefly, with La'an Noonien Singh? Strange New Worlds already showed the beginnings of some of Kirk's foundational relationships. Perhaps the series is also going to show how that foundation is built on the ruins of the ones that couldn't last? Carol Marcus may only appear twice in the entire Star Trek franchise , but it's her absence that makes her so important.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently streaming on Paramount+ .

Why Star Trek Beyond Didn’t Include Carol Marcus

Carol Marcus

While Star Trek Beyond wisely kept all of the main Enterprise crew intact, that doesn't mean every important character from the reboot series returned. One notable absentee from the third installment was Alice Eve's Carol Marcus. Despite joining the crew at the end of Star Trek Into Darkness , Carol was nowhere to be seen when the ship had its conflict with Krall. According to Simon Pegg , the reason for her absence was because they didn't have any decent material for her.

Rather than throw Carol Marcus in and not have her do anything important, Pegg explained during his appearance on Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast that they left her out of Star Trek Beyond so they could save her for something meaningful the future. As he put it:

We thought rather than have Carol Marcus be not used to a reasonable capacity, let's just not include her, have her be alive, in canon, and be ready to come back at any time.

Alice Eve's Carol Marcus was originally introduced as Carol Wallace early on in Star Trek Into Darkness , telling Captain Kirk and Spock that Admiral Alexander Marcus had assigned her to the Enterprise. However, her true identity was eventually revealed, and she explained that she had come on board to investigate the proton torpedoes her father had ordered Kirk to bring onto the Enterprise. The crew soon learned that those torpedoes were actually stasis chambers containing Khan Noonien Singh's men. Carol was later injured aboard USS Vengeance and watched Khan kill her father, and a year after the superhuman was defeated, she officially joined the Enterprise as a science officer.

Now that we know why the writers opted not to include Carol Marcus in Star Trek Beyond and that she's alive out there , that brings up another question: where exactly was she during the recent events? It wasn't said in the movie, but Simon Pegg revealed that there was dialogue from one of the script's drafts suggesting she was going down the same path as her original timeline's self (played by Bibi Besch) in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Pegg continued:

I think we had some lines to explain her absence in one of the initial drafts that had her going off to start work on the Genesis project and do sort of very, very early research on that. But it didn't make it into the final cut.

For those who haven't seen Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan , Project Genesis was intended to take uninhabitable planets and transform them into suitable habitats for humanoid life. Not only was the Genesis device a key plot element in Wrath of Khan , but its effects also factored heavily into The Search for Spock . Assuming those lines from the Star Trek Beyond draft are canon, it appears the starship life wasn't for Carol, and at some point before the third movie kicked off, she departed to work on this timeline's version of that experiment.

You can see Star Trek Beyond in theaters now, and with Star Trek 4 already in the works, maybe we'll hear news in the near future about Alice Eve reprising her role.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Cast Guide — Every New & Returning Star Trek Character

Star trek: strange new worlds season 3 will be “our best season so far”, says anson mount, i’m glad star trek: ds9 abandoned the original controversial plan for chief o’brien.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 may finally answer a mystery that started 57 years ago in Star Trek: The Original Series.
  • Lieutenant James T. Kirk has integrated seamlessly into the crew of the USS Enterprise and has links to other characters, including Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh.
  • The introduction of Gary Mitchell in season 3 could solve a long-standing question about Kirk's past, and Carol Marcus is speculated to be the "little blonde lab technician" he almost married.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 has the answer to a mystery that began in Star Trek: The Original Series 57 years ago if a pair of pivotal characters appear. Strange New Worlds successfully introduced Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) and integrated him into the crew of the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Even though Kirk is assigned to the USS Farragut as First Officer, James has smoothly fit in on the Enterprise, the starship he is destined to lead as Captain.

In Strange New Worlds season 2, Lt. Kirk met Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and his future best friend, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), for the first time, setting into motion over three decades of loyalty and adventures by the iconic Enterprise trio. Kirk also has another link to the Enterprise in his friendship with Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong). James and La'an share a mutual attraction, although Kirk can't act on it because he confessed to La'an that his on-again/off-again girlfriend, Carol Marcus, is pregnant. However, Strange New Worlds season 3 can introduce other significant figures from Kirk's past who factor into Star Trek: The Original Series , and answer one of TOS 's oldest questions as a result.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' cast of USS Enterprise legends grows in season 2, including the additions of Scotty and Lt. James T. Kirk.

Strange New Worlds Can Answer A 57-Year Old Star Trek Mystery

Strange New Worlds season 3 can potentially introduce Gary Mitchell to answer a question he left behind in Star Trek: The Original Series ' second pilot episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." In Strange New Worlds ' prequel timeframe, Mitchell is still alive and potentially serving on the USS Farragut with Lt. Kirk. Gary Mitchell's (Gary Lockwood) and James Kirk's (William Shatner) friendship goes way back to Starfleet Academy when Kirk was his instructor, who Mitchell described as "a stack of books with legs." To ease up on his Academy workload from Kirk, Gary set Jim up with a "little blonde lab technician" whom Kirk almost married, but it was never revealed who this mystery woman was.

By introducing Gary Mitchell, Strange New Worlds season 3 can finally solve this mystery, and the identity of the "little blonde lab technician" could very well be Carol Marcus. It's the simplest solution; after all, Carol is blonde, and she is the future mother of Kirk's son, David Marcus (Merritt Butrick). Other women introduced in TOS could also be Kirk's "little blonde lab technician," including Ruth (Shirley Bonne) from the TOS episode "Shore Leave" and Janet Wallace (Sarah Marshall) from the TOS episode, "The Deadly Years," but Carol Marcus would be the most logical and satisfying answer.

Will Carol Marcus & Gary Mitchell Appear In Strange New Worlds Season 3?

Although it's not confirmed whether Paul Wesley will reprise Lt. James T. Kirk in Strange New Worlds season 3, it would make sense to not only continue the young Kirk's development and relationship with the Starship Enterprise's crew but also introduce younger versions of Star Trek: The Original Series characters tied to Kirk's history, including Gary Mitchell and Carol Marcus. Carol has already been name-dropped, which created an expectation she would appear in Strange New Worlds . Mitchell would also be a fascinating guest star, which would seed Gary and Kirk's friendship before its inevitable ending when Mitchell becomes a psionically powered supervillain in TOS ' "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

Carol Marcus was played by Bibi Besch in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which happens about 25 years after Strange New Worlds season 2. Carol was also played by Alice Eve in Star Trek Into Darkness , which takes place in the alternate Kelvin Timeline of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies. Strange New Worlds has proven how deftly it can juggle multiple character arcs and relationship storylines, and it seamlessly wove James T. Kirk into the series. Star Trek: Strange New World s season 3 should have no trouble introducing the younger Carol Marcus and Gary Mitchell to answer one of the oldest questions posed by Star Trek: The Original Series.

Strange New Worlds Easter Eggs Call Back to a Major Star Trek: Wrath of Khan Character

With “Subspace Rhapsody,” the Enterprise crew has sung their way into several deep-cut references, including a callback to Carol Marcus from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 9

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.

When Strange New Worlds premiered last year, nobody expected the show to become a series of strange new genres. And yet, the most retro Star Trek series of the modern era has proved to be the most flexible. In a race to see which Star Trek show would have become a musical first, nobody could have guessed SNW would have beat Lower Decks to that particular punch. But here we are. The first official musical in the history of Star Trek has arrived, and like a lot of SNW season 2, “Subspace Rhapsody” contains multitudes.

Here’s every big easter egg from the Strange New Worlds musical and how some of the deeper cuts actually will change the way you think about Star Trek history…

“Triple the Speed of Subspace Communications”

Uhura and Spock are pumped about finding a “naturally occurring subspace fold” because they think it can speed up current subspace radios. This is a small tip of the hat to the idea that in The Original Series era the Enterprise was very often out of communications range of Starfleet Command, meaning Kirk had to make decisions on his own. In the The Next Generation era, it was far more common for Picard to have real time conversations with his superiors via subspace.

Ad – content continues below

More broadly, the idea of “subspace” in Trek goes back to TOS , and simply refers to a part of space that is separate and apart from normal space. Technically speaking, warp speed happens in subspace, but faster-than-light communications are also sent through subspace. Interestingly, in Discovery season 3, we learned that the Gorn destroyed parts of subspace prior to the 32nd century. Later in the episode, Spock says, “With our current relay network it takes weeks to send a message across the quadrant.” That’s pretty much still the case in TOS , which is in the future of SNW .

Uhura as a Switchboard Operator

Because the Enterprise computer is being hogged by computations connected to the subspace fold, Uhura is having to route comms to different people manually. This actually happens a lot in The Original Series , and in The Motion Picture , too. This is another nod to the “outdated” tech of the TOS era that is still very much the present in SNW .

The Description of Roger Korby

M’Benga describes Roger Korby as “the Louis Pasteur of archaeological medicine.” Spock uses this exact characterization of Dr. Korby in the episode “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” from season 1 of The Original Series . Relevantly, Dr. Korby will eventually become Christine Chapel’s fiancé — before disappearing. Spock and Christine have no way of knowing this at this point in the timeline, but it does make Spock’s song later in the episode, “I’m the X,” all the more poignant. Spock isn’t just losing Christine to a fellowship. She’s destined to fall in love with Dr. Korby!

We Have No Idea Who the Captain of the Farragut Is at This Point

Interestingly, although the Farragut has been referenced earlier this season in episode 6 , we have no idea who the captain is at this point in the timeline. At some point, the captain of the Farrugut was Captain Garrovick, who died sometime in 2257. We know this because the backstory of the TOS episode “Obsession” tells us a younger Kirk served on that ship at that time. Confusingly, this means that the events described in “Obsession” take place either at the very end of the Klingon War, or smack dab in the middle of it. It’s possible SNW is messing with the timeline a bit, and that we’re supposed to believe that Garrovick is still in command. But, because the captain of the ship has specifically not been named, it seems like the show is playing a small canon tapdance.

Kirk Shadowing Number One

Number One mentions shadowing Pike before she became the First Officer. This seems to imply Number One was shadowing Pike when he was still the first officer of the Enterprise , under Robert April. Was Una promoted to First Officer before Pike was promoted to Captain?

Number One’s “New” Personality

Kirk and Number One’s song, “Connect to Your Truth,” mildly lampshades the idea that Number One is a kinder and gentler on SNW than she was in “The Cage.” In the original conception of Star Trek , Number One was supposed to be more Spock-like and cold.

Gilbert and Sullivan

In the same song, Number One makes a reference to “Gilbert and Sullivan.” This comes from the Short Treks episode “Q&A” in which she and Spock sang “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General,” while stranded in the turbolift. Accidentally, that Michael Chabon-penned episode also referenced the TNG classic “Disaster,” in which Crusher had Geordi sing the same song.

La’an’s Watch

When La’an sings “How Would That Feel,” we see her watch from episode 3, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.” This was the watch she modified to find the secret facility during the time travel mission with the alternate Kirk.

The Ships in Starfleet, Circa 2260

When we learn that the musical reality is spreading to the “entire fleet,” we actually see several ships listed in Starfleet, including:

  • Lexington

All of these ships, including the Kongo, were listed as sister ships of the Enterprise in the book The Making of Star Trek . The TOS episode “Court Martial” established that the Republic was Kirk’s first ship before the Farrugut . The USS Lexington appears in the TOS episode “The Ultimate Computer” while the Kongo was listed in The Making of Star Trek and has appeared on several background readouts and charts, including Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country .

Klingon Planet Forcas

The star chart lists the planet Forcas here as a Klingon world. In the TNG episode “Parallels,” Worf has just come from a bat’leth tournament on Forcas III.

Deep-Cut Canon Planets

The same star chart also lists a few other planets, all of which are deep-cuts in Star Trek canon, including:

  • Eminar: This references the system from the TOS episode “A Taste of Armageddon.” In that episode, Eminar VII was fighting a war with the planet Vendikar, but the war was waged entirely by computers.
  • Delphi Ardu : This was a planet that was part of the long-extinct Tkon Empire, glimpsed in the TNG episode “The Last Outpost.”
  • Gamma Tauri : Also first mentioned in “The Last Outpost” in TNG , it was later thought to be near the Cardassian border in Deep Space Nine .

“Secrets You Keep”

The song, “Secrets You Keep,” refers to La’an’s time travel mission, Chapel and M’Benga’s actions in the Klingon War, and possibly, even Spock covering up the existence of his sister, Michael Burnham.

La’an calls Kirk “Jim,” which is what the alternate universe Kirk asked her to call him in “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.” Of course, throughout Trek canon, Kirk prefers “Jim” to “James.” But, oddly, almost everyone (including Uhura and La’an) in SNW has called him “James” except La’an.

Bruce Horak Returns!

In 2022, after Hemmer’s death in “All Those Who Wander,” Bruce Horak assured fans that he would return to Star Trek canon as a different character entirely. While one could argue this already happened in the episode “Lost in Translation,” in which Hemmer appeared as a kind of psychic memory, Horak appears here, again, as the Klingon captain .

K’Tinga Class and Aft Torpedoes

The Klingon ships referenced in this episode are said to be “K’Tinga class,” which references the Klingon ships first seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Although very similar to the D-7 Klingon ships from TOS , the big feature these ships seemed to have in TMP was…wait for it…the ability to fire photon torpedoes from behind.

“I Don’t Love Rules”

The idea that Kirk is a rule breaker by nature is a matter of some debate. Although we tend to think of Kirk as someone who breaks the rules all the time, at this point in the Prime Timeline, the biggest rule Kirk has probably broken is simply cheating on the Kobayashi Maru test as a cadet. Although we saw Chris Pine’s Kirk take this test in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, based on what we learned in The Wrath of Khan , we really don’t know how many rules Prime Kirk has broken. Especially not by 2260. But what rule does Kirk think he’s referencing? It feels unlikely that the Temporal Prime Directive existed in 2260, but maybe there is some early version of temporal regulations that Kirk is referencing.

Carol Marcus

Kirk reveals to La’an that he can’t pursue a relationship with her because he’s getting more serious with a woman named “Carol” who is a “scientist on Starbase I.” This referencing Carol Marcus from The Wrath of Khan , who, we learned in that film, had a son with Kirk, but specifically asked Kirk not to be in his son’s life, at all.

At this point in canon, David isn’t born yet, but we learn here that Carol is pregnant. Kirk says, “I tend not to stay in one place for very long, which is a growing problem because Carol is…pregnant.” The idea that Kirk couldn’t stay in one place is referenced in The Wrath of Khan when Carol says, “Were we together? Were we going to be? You had your world and I had mine. And I wanted him [their son] in mine, not chasing through the universe with his father…”

To be clear, the idea that Kirk was a low-key deadbeat dad was a retcon in 1982 in The Wrath . So, if it feels like retcon here, this has been going on for a long, long time.

Spock’s Big Feelings

The idea that Spock has emotions that are more intense than regular human emotions was established way back in TOS in episodes like “The Naked Time,” “Amok Time,” and “All Our Yesterdays.” The fact that Spock says, “I feel things differently, bigger,” is 100 percent a huge part of his entire arc in the classic films, starting with The Motion Picture , when he fails to purge all emotions in the Kolinahr. In a sense, this episode also sets up “The Naked Time.” Because Chapel is breaking things off with Spock, this, in theory, could lead Spock to be colder with her when she returns to the Enterprise in the time of TOS . Spock’s song, “I’m the X,” also seems to contain strains of that funky Vulcan guitar riff from “Amok Time.”

How Many People on the Enterprise?

The number of crewmembers on the Enterprise is mentioned to be “200.” Does this seem low? Well, in The Original Series , Kirk (and others) mentioned more than once that the Enterprise had over 400 crewmembers. In “A Piece of the Action,” he even tells mobsters that “there are over 400 there.” But, in the Pike era, the crew complement of the Enterprise is around 200. In “The Cage,” Pike said he was “tired of being responsible for 203 lives.” When the Enterprise appeared in the Discovery season 2 debut episode, “Brother” — the foundation for Strange New Worlds — the crew mentioned the Enterprise had 203 crewmembers.

“Our Prime Directive”

At one point in the big, showstopping, final song, “We Are One,” the crew sings about “our Prime Directive,” to which Spock says, “Well, not exactly.” The Prime Directive is about non-interference, of course. Not about uniting as one. But, whatever! Good thing Spock was there to “Well, actually” everyone in the middle of the song.

TOS Theme…Emerges From the Subspace Fissure?

As the closing number stops the subspace fissure, we hear the classic theme from The Original Series . Could we take this to mean that the Alexander Courage-composed theme to the classic show is…perhaps…created at this point in the Trek timeline? Now that a musical universe is possible within Trek canon, anything is possible.

Starfleet career [ ]

In the early 2250s , Marcus attended Starfleet Academy alongside James T. Kirk and Gary Mitchell . During their time at the Academy, Marcus became romantically involved with Kirk, but their relationship came to an end in 2254 , when he cheated in the Kobayashi Maru scenario and abused her trust.

By 2260 , Marcus had graduated from the Academy and achieved the rank of lieutenant . Despite commendations for her superb work as a scientist , Marcus also earned several reprimands for minor insubordination and an unwillingness to follow orders.

In 2260, Lt. Marcus was assigned to the USS Eagle , under the command of Captain Botwin . Also serving aboard at this time was Commander Kirk, who was serving as Botwin's first officer . For the first few months they managed to avoid contact with each other, but Botwin ordered Kirk to try and set Marcus straight and make sure she became an excellent Starfleet officer. Over the next few months, the pair got reacquainted and once again became romantically involved.

The relationship came to an end following the Eagle 's mission to Caperna IV , where Marcus' ignorance of an order from Commander Kirk led to a landing party becoming endangered. Thankfully, all members of the party returned safely to the Eagle and Marcus was placed on report by Kirk. Shortly after, Marcus resigned from Starfleet after discovering that she was pregnant with Kirk's child. ( TOS comic : " Star-Crossed ")

In 2261 , Marcus was working for Kraden Interplanetary Research . ( TOS novel : Inception )

That year, Marcus gave birth to a son, David . ( ST reference : Chronology )

Scientist [ ]

Considered an expert in molecular biology , bio- protein development, cell mutation and radiation , she was offered many posts in the Federation , but kept being refusing to get involved in projects with potential military applications. ( TOS video game : 25th Anniversary )

In 2266 , she was assigned by the Federation Council to the meta-genome project at Starbase 47 as a civilian overseer. It was here, realizing the potential of the meta-genome , that Marcus first envisioned developing a technology that could create entire star-systems from scratch. ( VAN novel : Reap the Whirlwind )

Y4E3-Sam-funeral2

David and Carol in 2267.

In 2267 , Carol and her son David then attended Sam Kirk 's funeral, though she did not want her son to meet his father. ( TOS - Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment comic : " Part 3 ")

In the year 2268 , approximately halfway through the USS Enterprise 's five-year mission (on stardate 3998.6), Carol Marcus and her seven-year-old son David were involved in a Klingon attack upon the Federation colony world of Beta Canzandia , where a terraforming research project was underway, supervised by Dr. Marcus. Carol and her son barely managed to escape alive, thanks to the intervention of the USS Enterprise and its first officer , Commander Spock . ( TOS novel : Faces of Fire )

By another account, in 2268 she had transferred to the ARK-7 space station to continue work with Dr. Anthony Cheever , eventually developing a device called the Cradle , which contained scores of microscopic life forms. Her team also accidentally created a virus during the course of their research which was deadly to Vulcanoid life forms. Thinking that the station was creating a weapon to be used by the Federation to commit genocide against the Romulan people, a Romulan force led by Centurion Preax boarded the station and took Doctor Marcus and Cheever prisoners. The crew of the USS Enterprise arrived to investigate the situation. Upon boarding the station Spock was infected with the virus, which made him seriously ill. Dr. Leonard McCoy worked rapidly to find a cure for the virus, curing Spock and the Romulans on board the station, and freeing the captives. Satisfied that the creation of the virus was an accident, the Romulans left Federation space peacefully. ( TOS video game : 25th Anniversary )

Apparently using the knowledge gained from the meta-genome project, Dr. Marcus invented the Genesis device and in 2284 , received Federation support for the project. Project Genesis was classified as top-secret and housed at the Regula I space station located near the Mutara Nebula . ( TOS movie , novelization & comic adaptation : Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

The Genesis disaster [ ]

In 2285 , the Reliant discovered the planet Ceti Alpha V whereupon the ship was commandeered by the infamous Augment Khan Noonien Singh who learned of the vessels mission. He attempted to get more information on Project Genesis from his nemesis, Admiral James T. Kirk but was thwarted in his plan. He later traveled to the Regula facility where he was looking for the Genesis device and killed many of the station's personnel. Using a mind controlled Pavel Chekov , he learned of the prototype being located in a bunker on Regula and used the transporter to beam the device onto the Reliant . However, Admiral Kirk attempted to stop him and during the skirmish between the two, the Genesis device was detonated which killed Khan in the Mutara Nebula . The resulting explosion resulted in the formation of the Genesis Planet due to the energy matrix within the Genesis device. ( TOS movie , novelization & comic adaptation : The Wrath of Khan )

Later life [ ]

Following the Project Genesis disaster in 2285 , Marcus was forced to live the rest of her life under tight security, lest her top-secret knowledge of Genesis fall into unfriendly hands.

She lived a secluded life on the world of Pacifica , under the constant watch of Starfleet security officers. She was allowed to leave her exile whenever she wanted, but seldom did as she was required to bring along an entourage of bodyguards to protect her from any enemy who might desire the Genesis information. ( TNG novel : The Genesis Wave, Book One )

In 2293 , early in the year, Marcus was critically wounded during a Klingon attack upon the Federation colony world of Themis ; a weapons-test for General Chang 's prototype Bird-of-Prey capable of firing while cloaked . Near the end of the year, she attended Kirk's memorial service that was held on the grounds of Starfleet Academy . Also in attendance were former crewmembers of the USS Enterprise , and some of his other old "acquaintances." ( TOS novelization : Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ; TOS novel : The Fire and the Rose )

In 2310 , Marcus, along with Dr. Gillian Taylor and Captain Uhura of the USS Hermes , planned to test an experimental Genesis Device on Pacifica. However, Marcus and Taylor encountered intelligent life in Pacifica's ocean, and the plan was abandoned. ( TOS short story : " The Hero of My Own Life ")

In 2375 , she was kidnapped by a race of shape-shifting Moss Creatures , who tricked her into revealing the secrets of the Genesis Device . The moss-creatures used the Genesis technology to reform entire sections of space for resettlement. Marcus was killed in the explosion of the moss-creatures headquarters. She willingly stayed behind so that no other race could gain the knowledge of Genesis from her. ( TNG novels : The Genesis Wave, Book One , The Genesis Wave, Book Two )

Alternate timeline [ ]

In an alternate timeline in which John Frederick Paxton destroyed Starfleet Command and ended the talks for the Coalition of Planets in 2155 , Carol Kirk married Commander James T. Kirk , the first officer of the UESS Enterprise , in 2255 . They had a son named David Samuel Kirk , who was born in 2261 .

In 2264 , she and David were killed when their transport vessel, the Galileo , was travelling to an interstellar symposium on molecular biology proposed by the Vulcan government. Upon the sight of a human vessel crossing the border of the Interstellar Coalition , the ship was destroyed by the Coalition vessel ICV Vanik when its Vulcan captain T'Prynn claimed that the human transport was not responding to hails. This led to her husband developing a deep resentment towards Vulcans. ( TOS - Myriad Universes novel : A Less Perfect Union )

Spock, Kirk, and Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness (via Paramount)

Reevaluating ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ 10 Years Later

Image of Lauren Coates

We live in a veritable golden age of Star Trek, but as recent as ten years ago, the only Trek content fans were getting on the big or small screen was a movie every few years, if we were lucky. The middle child of JJ Abrams’ Kelvin timeline trilogy, Star Trek Into Darkness was the hotly anticipated sequel to 2009’s Star Trek , a glossy, fresh take that reinvigorated interest in the franchise. When Into Darkness first came along, though, the film didn’t meet quite as friendly of a reception of its predecessor: its decision to reimagine Wrath of Khan’ s iconic villain and recreate a number of classic beats from the original Shatner/Nimoy films.

But while it may have taken a (not entirely well-received) gamble in rehashing such a famous part of Trek history , Star Trek Into Darkness is still an ambitious, emotional entry in the franchise that shoulders a sizable legacy without crumbling under its weight.

Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto , and Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek Into Darkness follows Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise as they chase a mysterious terrorist (Cumberbatch) after he destroys Starlet headquarters, killing Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) in the process. With mysterious new crew member Carol Wallace (Alice Eve) in tow and a fractured crew questioning his judgement, the film is an intensely personal story for Kirk in particular, who’s forced to grapple with the loss of not just his ship, but his father figure, his crew, and (almost) his closest friend.

Admittedly, when most people think of Into Darkness , the knee-jerk topic of discussion is the way the film reuses the Khan storyline from Wrath of Khan —the classic Trek film that saw Kirk up against a genetically modified superhuman/genius hell-bent on seeking revenge on Kirk for exiling him and his people to a desolate planet. In Wrath of Khan , Kirk and Khan Noonien-Singh have preexisting beef, so the film chronicles his quest for revenge against the Enterprise and her crew. But in Into Darkness , the franchise takes familiar pieces of the formula and rearranges them to create a new, just as emotionally impactful, but fundamentally different story: Instead, it’s now Kirk chasing Khan down for revenge after Khan destroyed Starfleet headquarters/killed Captain Pike.

In swapping the characters’ motives, Star Trek Into Darkness is able to deliver one of the most interesting, unexpected looks at Captain Kirk yet: a vengeful one, driven by anger and hate from the jump. Yes, Kirk delivers that famous “Khannnn!” scream in Wrath of Khan and he’s got plenty of fury there, but that’s at the end of the film, when Kirk is at his lowest moment and thinks Spock is gone for good.

In Into Darkness , Kirk begins the film on a warpath: still young, emotional, and impulsive, he’s warned repeatedly by members of his crew (including Scotty, who recognizes how headstrong Kirk is being and flat-out refuses to serve on the mission, forcing Chekov to step into the role of engineering chief) that going after Khan so suddenly (and with an unknown payload of torpedos) is a bad idea, but he does it anyway.

Part of what makes Chris Pine’s Kirk so endearing and effective is that he has a perpetual youthfulness and a wildcard factor that makes him unpredictable onscreen. Though Kirk is always gutsy across all portrayals, the Kirk we see in Wrath of Khan is aged, experienced, and up against ghosts from his past who’ve come back to haunt him. In Into Darkness , this is a Kirk who still doesn’t have all that much experience in the Captain’s chair, and the death of his mentor, Pike, at the beginning of the film means he’s more lost than ever—and more impulsive.

The switch-up of roles also means we get to see Spock once again engage his emotional, human side—instead of Spock sacrificing himself like in Wrath of Khan , it’s Kirk who ends up dying in front of his first officer, which then prompts Spock to duel Khan one-on-one in a furious attempt at revenge for his seemingly fallen captain.

Yes, the romantic subplot with Uhura continues to feel like it came out of nowhere, but the Kelvin timeline films are consistently excellent in their ability to treat Spock as a proper protagonist in his own right and not just second fiddle/first officer to Kirk. He’s allowed to be emotional and impulsive himself, and combined with the unique time travel hijinks that allow for Quntio!Spock to talk with future/Nimoy!Spock (in Nimoy’s last film role before his passing) Into Darkness is a particularly memorable endeavor for the half-human half-Vulcan XO.

Yes, there are more than a few aspects of the film that don’t work. Though the Carol Marcus subplot is interesting, the film’s blatant over-sexualization of her character feels like an outdated remnant of the show’s ’60s sensibilities that should’ve stayed in the past. Cumberbatch, too, doesn’t quite measure up to the borderline suave wit of Ricardo Montalbán’s original performance as Khan, which just made the main problem with the casting— the whitewashing —even worse. His icy, stoic take on the character is commendable in the sense that it’s not simply ripping off what made the character so popular in the first place, but it was doomed from the start.

But while it may not be perfect, Star Trek Into Darkness is still a solid, often surprisingly gutsy approach to the franchise, taking familiar archetypes and using them to push an alternate timeline set of characters we know and love into unique emotional places they’ve never previously explored. Between the revamped Khan twist, the reversal in the Kirk/Spock death scene, and the pulse-pounding, well-paced action, Star Trek Into Darkness deserves its flowers ten years on from its original theatrical release.

She also recorded the audiobook of the film. [1] The 2013 virtual collectible card battle game Star Trek: Rivals is using a picture of her for card #83 Doctor C. Marcus.

In 2019, she appeared in a video advertisement promoting the mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command , appearing as both herself and Carol Marcus. [2]

Personal and early career [ ]

Born in London, England to actor parents Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan , she made her screen acting debut in the BBC's 2004 biographical movie Hawking , in which Benedict Cumberbatch starred as Stephen Hawking . Eve and Cumberbatch later worked together in the 2006 comedy Starter for 10 before reuniting for Star Trek Into Darkness , in which Cumberbatch portrayed the primary antagonist. In the 2006 crime comedy Big Nothing , Eve co-starred opposite Simon Pegg , with whom she also reunited on Star Trek Into Darkness .

Eve was married to financier Alex Cowper-Smith from 2014 to 2017. [3] [4]

Eve's first American-made film was the 2009 drama Crossing Over , in which she co-starred with Ashley Judd . The following year, Eve was seen in two major motion picture comedies: she had the female lead in She's Out of My League and a supporting role in Sex and the City 2 . The latter film also featured Kim Cattrall and Willie Garson .

In 2011, Eve appeared on the HBO series Entourage in the recurring role of Sophia. Among the performers she worked with on this series were Melinda Clarke , Alan Dale and Malcolm McDowell .

In 2012, Eve played the lead female role in the Edgar Allan Poe -influenced thriller The Raven and appeared as a young Agent O in the sci-fi comedy sequel Men in Black 3 . Eve co-starred in the 2017 film Please Stand By which premise revolved around the character of a young autistic Trek fan named Wendy who runs away in order for her to be able to submit a script for a Star Trek writer's competition. Of interest to note is that near the ending of the film, Eve's character Audrey appeared as the visual representation of James T. Kirk in an imaginary dream sequence.

Carol Marcus

Dr Carol Marcus is the mother of Kirks' son David who makes her first appearance in the new timeline in star Trek, Into Darkness. In the original timeline, David is bought up by Doctor Carol Marcus in a single parent household. Her appearance in the second film includes a rather gratuitous underwear scene which we suspect is vital to the storyline (the previous line was written before the film came out). I'm sure they'll not be too many complaining about that... Whether it is unnecessary or not, you decide...

Carol Marcus held the rank of Lieutenant. Doctor was her title as she held a doctorate in applied physics in the Kelvin timeline.

The Intriguing World Of Entertainment

She Played ‘Carol Marcus’ In Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. See Alice Eve Now At 40.

By Nick Lee | December 9, 2022

Alice Eve - Star Trek

Alice Sophia Eve was born in London, England on February 6th, 2982. She is of mixed English, Irish, and Welsh descent and has a rare condition called heterochromia, which means that each of her eyes are a different color – her left eye is blue while her right is green.

Her parents, Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan, were both actors, so it was no surprise when she began to pursue her own career in the field. They later had two boys as well, making Alice the eldest of three children.

Alice Eve Y oung

As her mother and father were often traveling for various roles, she attended school at a variety of different facilities throughout her childhood, including in Chichester, at Bedales School, and Westminster in London. During these years, she participated in drama programs, preparing herself for a life on the big screen.

She spent a year’s sabbatical studying at Beverly Hills Playhouse in the United States before returning to the U.K. to attend university at Oxford University’s St. Catherine’s college. While there, she continued to participate in student stage productions, acting in a variety of roles.

Early Career

Alice Eve - Hawking

Alice’s professional career kicked off in 2004. She simultaneously earned parts in both TV and movie productions, performing minor roles as “Martha Guthrie” in the made-for-TV movie Hawking, about physicist Stephen Hawking’s search for the beginning of time, and as “Miss Frayne” in the period film Stage Beauty.

The following year found her making appearances in more period pieces. She played the character “Cicely Boyd” in three episodes of the TV miniseries The Rotters Club, then assumed the role of “Countess Giulietta Guicciardi” in the miniseries documentary Beethoven. She was also in an episode of Poirot, based upon Agatha Christie’s legendary detective Hercule Poirot.

However, it was 2006 when she began to really come into her own as an actress as she scored larger roles in two major films.

Acting Career

Starter for 10.

Alice Eve - Starter For 10

The first of those was Starter for 10, a comedy-drama film that took place in the year 1985. Alice played the character “Alice Harbinson” opposite actor James McAvoy, who filled the role of first-year university student “Brian Jackson.”

Brian is enamored with the TV quiz show University Challenge, but loses out on the opportunity when he helps Alice Harbinson cheat on the qualifier exam. While he eventually makes the team, he is distracted by his infatuation with Alice and his relationship with a woman named Rebecca. He faces trials and tribulations involving the two women while trying to achieve the success he desires on his trivia team.

This was an important movie for Eve, as she enjoyed a more prominent role.

Big Nothing

Alice Eve - Big Nothing

The same was true for Big Nothing, a dark crime comedy film that also featured David Schwimmer and Simon Pegg.

In this movie, Alice performed the role of teenage pageant queen “Josie McBroom,” who overhears two call-center employees planning a blackmailing scam and wants in on it.

However, the plot thickens when they find themselves thrust in the midst of a crime scene and become targets for a serial killer.

As one of the leading characters, Alice enjoyed greater screen visibility and her character was a crucial part of the plot’s surprise twist.

Eve then made a few more appearances on television episodes, participated in a short film named The Amazing Trousers, and played a supporting role in the 2009 movie Crossing Over.

She’s Out of My League

Alice Eve - She’s Out of My League

Yet, her next major role was She’s Out of My League, a romantic comedy that found her acting alongside her parents. She played “Molly,” love interest of main protagonist “Kirk,” and her real life mother and father portrayed her character’s fictional parents.

In the film, TSA agent Kirk meets Molly, a seemingly flawless beauty, but struggles with his own insecurities, causing turmoil in their relationship. The story revolves around their attempt to make things work, while Kirk tries to decide if he should continue to pursue Molly or return to his ex “Marnie” to try again.

The next few years found Alice performing major roles in films Decoy Bride (2011) and The Raven (2012). The former is another romantic comedy in the same vein as She’s Out of My League, while the latter is a dark crime thriller that serves as a fictionalized account of the life of Edgar Allen Poe. In each movie, she plays a major love interest for the protagonist.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

However, one of her biggest roles was J.J. Abram’s franchise reboot movie Star Trek: Into Darkness, where Alice joined the already established crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the Kelvin timeline, an alternate version that exists outside established canon for the massively popular franchise.

She reprised the role of “Carol Marcus” from Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, originally played by actress Bibi Besch.

Her version of the character joins the crew as a Science Officer, helping them face off with the Kelvin timeline version of classic Trek villain “Khan.”

Yet, despite being established in this movie, Alice Eve did not reprise her role for the following film in the series – Star Trek: Beyond. This left many fans confused as to the reason.

Alice Eve - Star Trek

Some believed it may be the result of a controversial scene in Into Darkness, when Kirk witnesses Carol in the midst of changing clothes in what seemed for many a gratuitous and potentially exploitative display of Eve’s character in nothing but her underwear.

Alice herself responded to the backlash with confusion, indicating that she was perfectly fine with the scene and had even prepared for it with fitness trainers in advance.

Why is Alice Eve not in Star Trek Beyond?

Eventually, “Scotty” actor Simon Pegg (also her co-actor in Big Nothing) explained that the plot of the follow-up did not really have a fitting place for the character and that including her there would be a disservice for Eve and the character.

Instead, the character remains alive and waiting for potential casting in Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies down the line.

Cold Comes the Night

Alice Eve - Cold Comes The Night

Alice seems to enjoy going back and forth with thrillers and romance, Star Trek notwithstanding. Her trend continues here with her next two major releases.

The crime thriller Cold Comes the Night gave Alice more of a central role than her other movies. In it, her character, “Chloe,” runs a shoddy motel in New York when she hears gunshots in one of the rooms.

Upon finding two bodies, she calls the police to investigate. However, the next day, the missing third man arrives and takes Chloe and her daughter hostage. He is a blind thief and needs her to be his eyes as he tracks down some missing money.

While Eve and her co-star Bryan Cranston were applauded for their performances, the movie itself garnered criticism for its series of illogical plot twists.

Before We Go

Alice Eve - Before We Go

The following year, she returned to her comfort zone with Before We Go, a dramatic romance where her character “Brooke” gets robbed and essentially trapped in New York when she needs to get to Boston the next day. Enter Chris Evans as “Nick” to rush to her assistance and begin an adventure that will bring them closer together.

Alice Eve - Iron Fist

In 2016, she played in Criminal and Misconduct, two movies in which she was one among larger casts of characters.

Then, she decided it was time for something a little different, a role that would allow her to stretch her acting abilities.

Marvel Comic character Iron Fist had a self-titled television series, and she joined the second season as “Mary Walker, ” a private-investigator, mercenary, and former special ops soldier in the U.S. army.

She suffers from dissociative identity disorder, swapping between two distinct identities, the innocent-like “Mary” and the blood-thirsty “Walker.”

She eventually develops a third mysterious alternate personality throughout the ten-episode season, all of which featured her character.

What is Alice Eve Doing Now?

Alice Eve now

(photo: Screen Rant Plus )

Alice’s career shows no signs of slowing down and her talents are still in high demand.

In 2022, Alice returned to her period piece roots with appearances in six episodes of the television series Belgravia and was cast in the 2022 psychological thriller The Infernal Machine alongside Guy Pierce.

Alice Eve now

She is also slated to appear in several upcoming movies, including Warning, and The Power.

Personal Life

Alice Eve Wedding

After the relationship she began with poet Adam O’Riordan in 2009 ended in 2012, she married financier Alex Cowper-Smith in 2014, who she originally met as a teen at Westminster school. However, this rekindled relationship would not last either, as they divorced in 2017.

Since then, she has dated several different men, but has seemingly not found “Mr. Right.” While reportedly a fan of children, Alice currently has none of her own.

Besch always sounded "off" to me. Laurie's American accent is rubbish. He's the Dick Van Dyke of American accents.

That was a great clip. Pine and Quinto portray Kirk and Spock, with banter and chemistry so well. That part where Kirk quips "Yet the more the merrier." Perfect shatner-esque delivery and smirk. Pine does it well yet still has his own take on the character. Classic trek right there in that little scene.
