Brindisi (Salentino: Brìnnisi ) is a medium-sized city of Apulia , southern Italy . It is the third largest city of Salento Peninsula (the "heel" of the Italian "boot") and one of the busiest ports of the Adriatic Sea.

Understand [ edit ]

History [ edit ].

grecian travel brindisi

The city was founded by the Messapians, a population of Illyrian origin, with the name of Brunda , meaning "deer's head". This name is due to the natural harbor which resembles the shape of the animal's antlers. The city assumed the name of Brention and then Brentèsion in Ancient Greek, to be later called Brundisium after the conquest by the Romans in 267 BC.

Brundisium reached a population of 100,000 and became the main commercial port of the Roman Empire , with heavy traffic towards Greece and the Middle East that continues today. The city was connected with Rome by the Via Traiana and the Via Appia , whose terminus is still visible today. Virgil died here on September 21 of 19 BC, after a voyage to Greece, where he caught a fever.

Brindisi's golden age ended in the early Middle Ages with invasions by the Ostrogoths, Lombards and Saracens that destroyed the city several times. It was later rebuilt and annexed by the Normans to the Kingdom of Sicily in 1130 and became one the major ports for the Crusaders headed to Holy Land . The town was dominated by Swabian, Angevin, Aragonese, Venetian, Spanish and Austrian kingdoms, and then ruled by the Bourbons from 1735 to 1860.

After Italian unification — and especially with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 — a new positive period started for Brindisi. Between September 1943 and February 1944 the city functioned as the temporary government seat of Italy, and hosted King Victor Emmanuel III, Pietro Badoglio and a part of the Italian armed forces command in September 1943 after the armistice with Italy.

Climate [ edit ]

Brindisi enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and sometimes humid with abundant sunshine. During spring and autumn, Sirocco winds can bring thunderstorms, occasionally dropping red sand from the Sahara in the region. Winters are mild with frequent rain; snow is quite rare.

The main cities of northern Italy are not directly connected to this station and a change in Bologna will be necessary. Here you can take a Frecciabianca train to reach Brindisi in 6¾ hours, with a cost comprised between €40 and €60. From Taranto it is possible to take a regional train to arrive in the town in 1¼ hr spending €5. From Lecce you can choose between regional trains, that take about ½ hr (€2.8) or Frecciabianca (€9.9), reaching Brindisi in just 15 minutes. Visit the site of Trenitalia for more info.

By car [ edit ]

Get around [ edit ].

Map

Surrounding areas, such as beaches to the north, are best reached by car.

On foot [ edit ]

As the city center area is not so large, a bit over a kilometer from the train station to the Roman Columns, most of the sights in the city center can be seen in an afternoon on foot. Because of many military facilities in the surroundings of Brindisi, areas north or south of the city center are not easy (or very pleasant) to reach on foot. For most things outside of the center, it is better to take a bus or rent a car.

See [ edit ]

  • 40.641143 17.946825 2 Roman columns ( Colonne romane ), Via Colonne, 53 . A symbol of Brindisi, they were thought to mark the termination of the Appian Way, but probably they only had a celebrative purpose. Only one of the two, standing at 18.74 meters (61.5 ft), is still visible, since the other one crumbled in 1528, and the ruins were donated to the city of Lecce to hold the statue of its patron Saint Oronzo. They were built during the 2nd century AD, with a Corinthian capital. ( updated Jul 2018 )

Do [ edit ]

Buy [ edit ].

For fruits and vegetables, there is a market area in the city center at the appropriately named " Piazza mercato ", open every day except Saturday.

There are many clothing and specialty shops in the center.

During the off-season, many shops will close for a period in the early afternoon (around 1PM to 4PM), similar to the midday closures for siesta in many parts of Spain. This is also the case for many other cities in the region.

Eat [ edit ]

Restaurants will have many common items of Apulian cuisine. Famous pasta styles include spaghetti alle vongole and orechiette con cime di rapa.

Locals speak highly of the seafood in the area.

Towns and cities in Puglia

Brindisi, puglia.

Brindisi

For most people visiting Puglia, Brindisi is merely a point of arrival and departure, thanks to its being home to one of Puglia’s two main airports . But if you're staying in the area, or are looking for somewhere to spend a few hours before catching your flight home, Brindisi is worth a visit. Like many of the other towns on Puglia’s Adriatic coast, Brindisi’s history is inextricably linked to the lands that lie across the sea to the east.

Thanks to its large natural harbour, the city has always been, and continues to be, one of Italy’s most important ports.

Today it is the major departure point for car ferries loaded with tourists heading to Greece and the Balkans, but during Greek and in particular Roman times and in the Middle Ages, it served other purposes. The Romans, who took the town from the Greeks in the middle of the 3rd century BC, set about maximising the town’s potential. Two columns (one of which still remains above the port) were erected to identify Brundisium as the end of the Appian Way, a road which had been built to facilitate the movement of goods and troops between the centre of the empire and the east Mediterranean. With the constant comings and goings of legions, the navy and trade ships, Brindisi quickly grew in size and soon had a population of some 100,000. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Brindisi passed into the hands of the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Lombards, the Saracens and then the Normans, who arrived in 1070. It was during their rule that the Crusades began leaving from Brindisi, and in 1228 Emperor Frederick II Stupor Mundi chose the town as his port of departure for the successful Sixth Crusade, during which he reclaimed Jerusalem for the Christian world. Badly bombed during the Second World War, Brindisi spent many years rebuilding, and, especially in the last decade, the city has undergone a significant makeover. The centre is home to wide, palm-tree lined boulevards, a revamped seafront promenade with restaurants and bars, a great many winding streets, some fine Baroque churches (including the cathedral) and, last but not least, the mightily impressive fortress built by… yes, you guessed it… Emperor Frederick II! So, if you have a few hours to spare, why not make a visit to Italy's gateway to the east?

The crossings to both Kefalonia and Zakynthos are operated with the conventional ferries of Red Star company, with one crossing per week more specifically every Tuesday at 18:00.

Just a little heads up, departures with European Seaways, Red Star as well as the crossings to Corfu of Grimaldi Lines are only operated in the summertime.

Brindisi - Corfu - Igoumenitsa

Brindisi - patras, what makes greece the perfect choice for this year’s vacation .

Corfu is known around the world as the jewel of the Ionian sea full of gold sanded or even colored pebbled beaches that plunge into crystal clear waters. It is an island with countless beauties, with very hospitable people, wonderful homemade food and luxurious accommodations that suit to every taste. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the old Venetian fortress, of Byzantine construction made on the 8th century and fortified almost the entire medieval city.

Zakynthos the ''Fiore di Levante'', as the Latins called it has the most impressive beaches, it’s the star of Caretta Caretta turtles the perfect place to spend your vacation, a tiny utopia with thousands of places to visit. Be sure to visit the famous Navagio beach, witness the sunset in Kerry and Kryoneri, the beaches where the Caretta caretta turtles lay their eggs. Other great places to visit would be the beaches of Laganas, Tsilivi, Argassi, Kalamaki, and Alykes.

Kefalonia is a marvelous island, the largest one of the Ionian groups, full of enchanting villages, breathtaking caves and exotic attractions. You’ve probably already seen it in various postcards without even knowing it though its even better up close. Do not miss the opportunity of visiting the Sea lake of Melissani, the mysterious cave of Drogarati with the seductive stalactites and the impressive architecture of the castle or the lighthouse.

Patras is known as the city of entertainment, for its carnival which is the largest event of its kind in Greece the 2nd biggest in Europe and the 3rd biggest in the world. The city is filled with history, culture and beautiful sights. One of the most significant attractions is the church of Agios Andreas located on the coastal road, a real architectural masterpiece with unique paintings. The central dome is 46 m high and can be seen even from the port. Be sure to take a walk in Dasyllio, on the pine-covered hill next to the Fortress, the view will bewitch you.

Igoumenitsa is the most suitable holiday destination since it combines its rich vegetation with the navy-blue sky and the astonishing sea as it spreads under a green forest and in front of the deep blue waters of the Ionian Sea. Grab the opportunity and go swimming in Drepano, a gorgeous peninsula with an area of 32 acres located in the greenest enviroment you've even been at. Other suitable options would be Makrigiali and Kanali beaches or even go fishing in Sagiada, a coastal village frequented by local fishermen.

No image and no text can properly describe the endless beauty of Greece, all you have to do is visit it and it will make you fall in love with its every aspect.
