Welcome to a whole new world of imaginative Airbnb stays . At a press event in Los Angeles on May 1, the vacation rentals platform unveiled a new category of once-in-a-lifetime accommodations and experiences, which it’s calling “Icons.” These new listings—which formalize a program that has been in the works for a decade—span the worlds of music, film, television, art, and sports.

At the same time, Airbnb is making group bookings more seamless with three incremental features intended to steer travelers toward Airbnb—and away from hotels. Here’s what cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky and team have up their sleeves for 2024.

The introduction of “Icons”

Nearly a decade ago, Chesky and cofounder Joe Gebbia first came up with the idea to have a listing for a night inside an Ikea furniture store. That was soon followed by a stay at the only Blockbuster remaining in the USA (in Bend, Oregon). Numerous other unique accommodation options have come and gone over the years. Most recently, Airbnb offered stays at Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse , in celebration of the Greta Gerwig–directed, live-action Barbie film released in 2023. Now, 10 years later, Airbnb is introducing an entirely separate category, one that is intended to tap into nostalgia, sentimentality, and what Chesky calls “magical moments.”

“Icons take you inside worlds that only existed in your imagination—until now,” Chesky proclaimed. “We asked ourselves what if we took this magic to the next level and what if we made this made these experiences even bigger?”

Among the extravagant options are Prince’s “Purple Rain” house in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The first 11 Icons were introduced this week. Travelers may be most excited about an opportunity to stay overnight at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris , complete with a bed in the art museum’s iconic clock room. From a rooftop terrace, lucky guests will be able to watch the Opening Ceremony of this summer’s Paris Olympic Games along the Seine River. And they will have private and exclusive access to the museum’s Impressionist art collection.

From a detailed re-creation of the house featured in Disney Pixar’s Up (yes, this one is also suspended in the sky thanks to a crane and 8,000 balloons) to an immersive night in the Ferrari Museum in Italy complete with a driver and race experience, there are ample opportunities to have an over-the-top stay or exclusive encounter. Following the first set of Icons introduced this week, Chesky said that another batch of experiences will be revealed later this summer.

All Icons are in their own category on the Airbnb homepage. While many Icons are free, all are priced under $100 per guest. A very limited number of slots are available for each Icon booking. After requesting to book these one-time experiences, the lucky guests who are selected to actually reserve them will receive a digital “golden ticket” from Airbnb. Each Icon will have its own countdown clock before golden tickets are released.

New group trip features

While the splashier portion of the May 1 event focused on Airbnb’s debut of Icons, for many travelers, perhaps the most practical (and useful) features that emerged were improved group booking functions.

“Our app was not designed for groups,” Chesky admitted at the beginning of the media event. He acknowledged that to date, the group booking process has been clunky. That has included everything from choosing the right accommodation to sharing trip details to communicating directly with a host. “We’re fixing all of this and I think we made group trips on Airbnb pretty delightful,” Chesky noted.

While “Wishlists,” a feature that allows travelers to create a named folder of saved homes, has been around for years, Airbnb is now making it easier to share with others. The new sharing functionality means each member of a group can now add notes and individually vote on listings when deciding which home to book within a Wishlist.

Additionally, once a group is created, everyone traveling in that group will now have one-click access to all essential reservation details: the full address, Wi-Fi password, and check-in instructions. Previously, the individual who booked the Airbnb would have to manually add each group member’s email address before receiving the information.

Finally, a new “Messages” tab consolidates communication so that guests—including other members of the group—can easily chat with the host in one thread. No group trip leader or single liaison is needed. In addition, reactions will allow guests and hosts to respond with emojis. These features are all live on the app now.

Unknown singer speaks out on ‘whirlwind’ week after replacing Olly Murs at Take That concert

A bar singer who stood in for Olly Murs at the last minute has described the ‘whirlwind’ week he’s had since he supported Take That.

Daniel Rooney, 26, was playing in a hotel bar next door to the Ovo Hydro in Glasgow when he was asked to fill Olly’s support slot at the 11th hour.

Olly couldn’t make it to the venue , situated on the north bank of the River Clyde, because of transport issues, leaving the concert’s organisers in a bit of a pickle.

Thankfully, Daniel stepped in after being approached by Scots TV presenter Ross King, and played in front of 14,000 fans – a crowd more than 300 times the size of his usual audiences in pubs and clubs around Glasgow.

The busker was later thanked by Take That frontman Gary Barlow before heading back to his life in Cambuslang, a town in the south-east of the Greater Glasgow area.

Olly struggled to make it to Glasgow despite supporting Take That throughout the rest of their current UK tour, with his flight from London cancelled on the day of the Scotland gig.

Speaking to the BBC about the last few days, Daniel said: ‘It’s been a whirlwind. My phone’s not stopped for three days. It’s been really fun.’

Describing the feelings he had while on the biggest stage in Glasgow, he explained: ‘I usually play to around 40 people. It’s madness. I was more just focusing on what songs to sing. I was more excited than anything else.’

He then said his concert was ‘the craziest 30 minutes ever’ and thanked members Gary, Mark Owen, and Howard Donald for calming him down and discussing his setlist.

After giving the performance of a lifetime, Daniel’s whirlwind week started when Gary paid tribute to him on Instagram, saying, ‘This young man saved the day, thank you,’ adding a picture of him and posting three love heart emojis.

He admitted to Lorraine shortly afterwards that he thought the whole thing was a ‘wind up’: ‘One of the waiters [at the hotel] came up and says “Ross King wants to speak to you and he might have a life changing opportunity for you”.

‘I’m thinking someone’s trying to wind me up, but he was telling the truth. I packed up my stuff and I said to the Radisson “Look, I need to go, I’ve been asked to play at the Hydro”.’

Days later, he was asked to perform a short setlist at the Celtic Park football stadium as Celtic took on Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premier League.

Since then, it sounds like Daniel has had an incredible week in the spotlight and is only just coming back to Earth, with TikTok videos of his performance racking up over 100,000 views.

While Daniel had already played the Hydro as a member of Rod Stewart’s backing band in December 2022, it was the first time he’d played the arena solo.

Olly supported Take That on their remaining two nights in Glasgow and will support them for their Manchester dates too, which have been moved from the newly-opened Co-op Live Arena to the city’s AO Arena.

The venue, situated in the east of the city by Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, has been troubled by a serious of technical issues in its opening days which have resulted in several concerts being rearranged, postponed, or moved.

How to Group and Organize Windows 10 Desktop Icons

Our Windows desktop is often our go-to location to put files and folders, especially if we want quick and convenient access. As a result, our desktops could look like a massive heap of clutter – a hodgepodge of files on screen.

In part this is the fault of the operating system; the Desktop appears first in just about every file save dialog making it an incredibly handy place to stow “just a couple of files”. Unfortunately, these couple of files quickly accumulate into so much more. Your desktop quickly ends up looking like chaos.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Organizing your Windows desktop is a lot easier than cleaning up real-life clutter, and you don’t even have to stop using the Desktop as your default organizing space. In this article, we will show you how to get your Windows desktop organized so that it’s clutter-free, efficient, and convenient.

Windows has some built-in features for organizing files and folders, which might just be what you need. For a more robust solution, there are some third-party packages which you can use to group desktop icons into specific categories. Let’s have a closer look at both of these solutions.

Organizing the Desktop Icons With Folders

The most straightforward way of getting your desktop under control is to use folders. Adding new folders to the desktop is simple. First, right-click on the desktop, and select New . Then, click on  Folder from the drop down to create   an empty folder.

It’s a good idea to name the folder when you make it to be more organized. But in case you forget, you can always rename it by right-clicking on the folder and selecting Rename . You can then type in a name for it. Remember that you are trying to make your desktop more organized, and the least thing you want is seeing your folders named New Folder, New Folder (2), New Folder (3), and so on.

Now you can drag and drop the appropriate desktop shortcuts into your new folder. This will save the files in your folder instead of having them scattered around your screen. You could add any number of folders to the desktop for alternative shortcut categories such as applications, utilities, multimedia software, and so on. Then you could move the icons into the folders as in the snapshot below.

If you have a lot of files on your desktop, getting them organized can be difficult, especially if they start overlapping. One useful technique is to use the built-in sorting functions of Windows 10 to sort your files by type. This will put all the files of the same type together, so that for example if you have a “Movies” folder, doing a sort by type will put all the video files in one place. This way, you can you can easily group-select and drag them to your “Movies” folder. Just right-click on the desktop, click Sort by -> Item type.

Third-Party Tools

Nimi places.

The built-in folder system for Windows is simple and effective, but it isn’t feature-rich. One feature you might want to have is the ability to see inside folders without having to open them, just to remind you whats in there. You can create folders like that using a third-party tool called Nimi Places. It is a portable software package that you can use to add folder groups to the desktop. Open this page and click “Download Nimi Places” and save the executable. Then click on the .exe file and select “Extract Nimi Places” to launch the software.

Nimi Places launches with four ready-made container groups for Applications, Games, Documents, and Downloads. You can copy and paste desktop shortcuts into those boxes by right-clicking an icon and selecting “Copy.” Then right-click inside one of the container boxes and click “Paste” to add the copied shortcut to it.

You can also drag the containers to re-position them on the desktop. However, there is a tendency for you to drag them around the screen by accident. To avoid this, just right click on a container and click Lock . You can unlock them the same way, by right-clicking the container and selecting Unlock.

To add your own group containers to the desktop, click the Nimi Places icon in the system tray. This will open the window as shown in the screenshot below. Click the + button at the bottom right to make a new container. Then click Place , and select one of your desktop shortcut folders. That will add the folder container to the desktop, and you can open the shortcuts it includes from there.

You can resize the containers by clicking dragging their borders with the mouse. Note that you can also scroll through the contents of larger containers with a scroll bar by clicking the right side of a container and then dragging its scroll bar up and down.

To edit the containers’ titles, right-click on the title bar at the top of the container box. Then, select the Rename container option, which opens the text box below. Enter an alternative title for the container there.

The software has some other customization options for the containers. To see them, right-click a container and select Appearance and Theme from the sub-menu. This will let you choose some alternative backgrounds for the containers.

ToolBox is another third-party package you can use to group your desktop icons. You can download the program  from here . Click tbox285.zip to save its Zip. Then open the Zip folder in File Explorer and click Extract all to extract the contents of the folder. When you’ve extracted the Zip file’s contents, you can run ToolBox from there.

Now you can set up new icon boxes for the desktop by right-clicking the ToolBox icon on the system tray and selecting New Toolbox . That adds a box to the desktop as you can see in the screenshot below. Drag desktop icons into the box or boxes to organize them.

To further customize those desktop icon boxes, right-click one and select Toolbox Properties from the contextual menu. That opens the window in the snapshot directly below. There, you can resize the boxes, alter their colors, and apply new effects to them.

To resize the icon boxes, drag the bars under Window & Tile Size . Drag the Rows bar to expand or contract the height of the box. Alternatively, you can drag the Columns bar right or left to alter the width.

You can alter the colors of the boxes by clicking the box next to Color . That will open a color palette from which you can choose other colors. Or you can add some background wallpaper to the box by selecting Bitmap from the drop-down menu and pressing the … button beside the Background Bitmap path box.

You can include the title at the top the box by clicking the Title Bar Visible check box (or hide the title by unchecking it). Enter new titles for the box in the Toolbox Name text box at the top of the window.

Once you’re done, click the Apply Changes button to apply any newly selected settings.

The Toolbar Control Panel lists all your icon boxes. You can right-click a box and select Toolbar Control Panel to open the window shown below. The Toolboxes tab lists the desktop icon boxes. You can a delete a box by right-clicking its title there and selecting Delete Toolbox . Click Settings > Save all toolbox settings to quickly save all the shortcuts, effects, and desktop positions of the icon boxes.

In addition, you can also set up boxes that include system tray shortcuts. The Toolbar Control Panel includes a Wizards menu at the top. Select that to open a small menu where you can set up a system folder, drive, and megapack shortcut box.

With Windows 10 folders, Nimi Places, and ToolBox, you can now effectively group your desktop icons and organize shortcuts. You might also look at app launchers as a way to clear up a cluttered desktop, as covered in our  How to add new app Launchers to Windows 10  article.

Group visitation programs are designed for high schools, community colleges, and community-based organizations that work with students in 9th grade and above. Your visit, led by our knowledgeable student tour guides, may include a 30-minute information session and a campus tour that highlights the University's history, traditions, academic excellence, diverse campus, and student life.

Once you have requested a tour and have indicated an interest in dining on campus, you will be prompted to complete the Group Tour Dining form to provide your billing information.

Tax-Exempt Filing Information

To waive the tax amount on meals, the State of Connecticut requires a CERT-123 form  to be submitted and approved by the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (CT DRS) for tax exemption on meals. If this form is not approved by DRS and received by the date of your event, we will be required by the State of CT to charge a Sales Tax on meals, of 7.35%.

• Instructions for submission are listed on the form. Once it is approved by DRS, kindly forward a copy to [email protected] .
• For questions or concerns regarding this form, please call the CT Department of Revenue Services at 860-297-5962 .

Arrival & Parking

Most Group Tours Programs will depart from the UConn Bookstore. Buses may use the bus stop located at the UConn Bookstore as a drop-off and pick-up location.

Buses should plan to park in Lot D located on Alumni Drive. Smaller vehicles, such as vans, should park in either the North or South Parking Garages and should review the parking information on our Directions and Parking page .

Group Tour Request

Your registration is tentative until you have received confirmation from a member of our team. Our typical response time to confirm a tour guide for your group is seven days or less.

Chaperones and Group Supervision UConn's tour guides are not responsible for supervising or monitoring the group during the visit to UConn. Chaperones must be assigned to each tour group and be responsible for monitoring group behavior and ensuring the group stays together during the tour and any activities on UConn's campus. UConn requires a 10:1 student-to-chaperone ratio for all visits involving minors.

Reserve a Weekday Tour

when classes are in session to get the best sense of what it will be like as a future Husky.

Reserve three weeks in advance

to allow ample time to coordinate the details of your visit.

at alert.uconn.edu in the event of inclement weather. If UConn delays opening or is closed, tours will be canceled.

Middle School Groups

We welcome your group to visit our UConn Storrs Campus this semester. Currently, we do not offer guided tours for middle school groups, however, we welcome you to come to campus and follow a self-guided tour .

Many of the University of Connecticut's facilities are open to the public at no/low cost during the week.

• Cultural Centers (4th Floor of Student Union)
• The Stone Pavilion
• UConn Botanical Conservatory

Additionally, please extend your visit to Downtown Storrs and check out UConn's Ballard Puppetry Museum , UConn Bookstore, Dog Lane Café, and other local eateries.

During the academic year, you may fill out the group tour dining form  to arrange for lunch in the dining hall. During the summer, groups may eat outdoors and are responsible for their own clean-up.

Large Groups

It is recommended that you contact locations to discuss how to arrange for your group's visit as program services and space may be limited. Educational facilities can accommodate groups of 25 students at a time. For larger groups (up to 100 people), suggest breaking into smaller groups (<25 people) and rotating thru the different facilities and use our self-guided activity brochures.
