The homes on tour this year represent exquisite examples of some of the Early 20th Century's most popular architectural styles. Included in this year's collection will be the first home built in the District, a classic Greek Revival; and two houses that were designated among the Top Ten Most Beautiful Homes in Dallas by D Magazine -- one, an Italian Renaissance Style palazzo and the other, an English Cotswold Style Manor House. Also featured are are a stately 1914 Georgian Mode stunner designed by renowned architects Hal Thomson and Marion Fooshee; and an impressive Jacobethan Style Tudor with Palladian and Georgian influences.

Guests can travel between all tour stops on air-conditioned mini-coaches staffed by neighborhood tour guides who’ll share interesting facts and details about The District. Those interested in a more-vintage mode of transportation can amble down the avenue in horse-drawn carriages . Both the coaches and carriages are provided with our compliments, at no charge.

This Cool and Contemporary Dallas Home Is a Design Lesson in the Art of Restraint

Designer Chad Dorsey ties in the client’s Caribbean roots with his love for Louisiana architecture to create a one-of-a-kind dwelling fit for modern empty-nesters.

“The first thing was fitting the architecture on the property and programming it the way they wanted in order that the house would capture the views and have light hitting the space just right,” Dorsey says. “It was an empty property on a very narrow lot on this perfect little street in Turtle Creek. We wanted to maximize the footprint to be all on one level with two bedrooms upstairs.”

chad dorsey dallas exterior

Dorsey leaned into the husband’s unique upbringing in St. Croix and his memorable experience interning for A. Hayes Town, a patriarch of southern architecture, particularly in Louisiana, for the exterior design. Dorsey played off of Town’s affinities for elements such as slate roofs, tall ceilings, the use of cypress and reclaimed brick, large window walls, and fully landscaped interior courtyards—all of which have become synonymous with classic Louisianan residential design, thanks to the legendary architect’s influence.

However, this home is a far cry from your typical ornate Southern estate. Dorsey approached the exterior with a fresh, modern lens that relies on clean lines, sleek oriel windows, and a no-frills design that allow the striking materials to speak for themselves.

chad dorsey dallas living room

“We wanted to create a collection of small buildings with this reclaimed brick I found that would tie everything back to Louisiana,” says Dorsey. “The steeper-pitched roof is similar to what you find in the Caribbean and the entry views of the courtyard are just like lots of homes in New Orleans. You get the sense of the space as soon as you walk in, and it all wraps around the courtyard.”

Though the house is intended to be a low-maintenance home for newly minted empty nesters, Dorsey says the scale of the house allows it to live bigger than it is while offering the perfect layout for entertaining. Guests can be sitting in the family room and enjoying the courtyard views while chatting with the owners in the kitchen, providing a balance of privacy and openness.

“The house has this classic feel in that it seems as if you’ve simply renovated it and opened it up,” says Dorsey.

Dorsey's materials-driven, Caribbean-meets-Louisiana inspiration lends to the interiors as well, as the home features stunning vaulted cypress ceilings, understated yet elegant flooring, and beautiful plaster walls that are perfect for showcasing the couple’s art collection, which he says also helped drive the design.

“Whether we do just interiors or architecture as well, the space is most important to us and the furnishings come after those are refined, as they shouldn’t overpower the architecture,” says Dorsey. “We wanted to feel like everything in the house wasn’t just purchased all at once and rather collected over time, which is more my style, and it allowed us to incorporate pieces that were meaningful to the homeowners already.”

chad dorsey dallas courtyard pool

The designer’s favorite space in the home is the combined living and dining rooms, as he says it’s very impactful in terms of scale and is a great representation of all the elements that inspired the home’s design.

The traditional chandeliers above the dining table that you might find in a classic Southern manse offer a bit of whimsy in contrast to the more sleek, contemporary pieces, while the artwork used throughout infuses warmth and meaning that make the owners feel right at home in their new dwelling.

chad dorsey dallas dining room

The courtyard itself feels like a work of art, as it’s on display in nearly every room of the house. Dorsey credits landscape architect Mary Ellen Cowan from Mesa Design Group for its elegant simplicity and lushness.

Cowan’s design philosophy ties seamlessly with Dorsey’s in her use of mixed materials and restraint to create a luxurious yet understated space for the owners to entertain in and cool off from the Texas sun.

Step Inside This Dallas Home by Chad Dorsey

“Projects don’t always have to be huge to be a dream, but this one really was a dream project,” says Dorsey.

“The clients and I were on the same page every step of the way. I was worried about designing a home for another architect, but they let me have creative direction and they really made the process fun.”

chad dorsey dallas primary bedroom

What began as a vision for the couple’s next chapter as empty nesters also morphed into a relic of their past, from the architectural nods to the husband’s childhood and early career to the artwork and artifacts from family members, friends, and former co-workers filled throughout. What could be more inviting than a space that highlights cherished memories of the past while offering a cool and contemporary backdrop for the family’s future?

D allas has no shortage of great home tours. Any weekend is well spent exploring the glamorous bungalows of Hollywood/Santa Monica, the Queen Anne-style estates along Swiss Avenue, and the quirky, Charles Dilbeck-filled corner of Cochran Heights. But only one Dallas home tour lets you explore the best of every coveted neighborhood: the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes.

The popular event focuses on the best architecture across the city, no matter where that work resides. With tickets now available for the 2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, we’re offering an exclusive peek at the six striking dwellings, chosen from countless submissions by the Tour of Homes committee, that will open their doors on Saturday, October 28, and Sunday, October 29.

East Dallas: Maestri Studio

The Allen June 2024

An East Dallas Jewel by Maestri Studio

Architect Eddie Maestri and his eponymous studio are known for modernist masterpieces (often with a playful dash of Palm Springs). This East Dallas gem is a blend of SoCal/Asian styles, inspired by the clients’ travels. Bringing the outdoors in was key, and Maestri Studio did it in surprising ways. Unique additions include a sliding glass door between a living area and the central courtyard, as well as an indoor/outdoor fireplace that punches through the exterior wall.

North Dallas: AMDG Studio

A preston hollow stunner by amdg studio.

What began as a modest ranch remodel evolved into a serious makeover on Bobbitt Drive. The client dreamed of an airy, sun-soaked place to cook and entertain. Walnut millwork, Douglas fir ceilings, Lueders limestone, and more are seen throughout the high-efficiency home, which was designed to accommodate a wheelchair in the future (along with a dedicated suite for a future caregiver).

Junius Heights: VeuxDeux Designs

A renovated 1920s crafstman in junius heights.

Known for thoughtful preservation and a harmonious high-low blend, the talented team behind VeuxDeux Design , founded in 2017 by AIA architect Leslie Nepveu, completely renovated a small Craftsman home in Dallas’ historic Junius Heights neighborhood (part of the 1919 Munger Place Revision) and added a 795-square-foot second floor. The foundation was adjusted, a fireplace was replaced, and an antique gas radiator was installed to add even more character to the classic Dallas home.

Preston Hollow: Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects

A preston hollow “classic” by malone maxwell dennehy architects.

An airy contemporary residence by the longstanding Dallas architecture firm allows every room to commune with its killer backyard. A striking blend of contemporary and traditional elements, “it is deliberately domestic and recalls familiar tropes of American houses” according to the AIA website.

University Park: Janson Luter Architects

A university park home by janson luter architects.

To build this large family home on a small corner lot in the Park Cities, the Janson Luter team had to get creative. A collaboration with Dan Shipley, FAIA of the award-winning firm shipleyArchitects, helped establish the unique flow of the open concept home. A thoughtful material palette (including St. Joe’s bricks coursed to align with all openings of the facade) was selected to complement the project’s structure.

Bent Tree: Marc McCollom Architect

A bent tree modern by marc mccollom architects.

The late ’70s home in Far North Dallas was a “ rambling conglomeration of rooms ” beyond its striking modern exterior. The Marc McCollom team did a complete renovation of the 7,500-square-foot interior, bringing clarity, scale, and stunning materials.

Countdown to the 2024 WRHT

What people are saying about the wrht.

“There are many great home tours in the North Texas area, but we value our collaborations with the White Rock Home Tour especially. Curated by a passionate group of volunteers on behalf of a worthy cause, the tour spotlights the residential architecture of one of Dallas' most interesting neighborhoods. Their attention to Ju-Nel Homes, a small firm which created some wonderful mid-century gems specifically for their sites and using materials particular to Texas, is exciting and led to a popular exhibition at the Center several years ago. This is an event not to be missed.” GREG BROWN Dallas Center for Architecture
“I am always excited to see what will be on the tour each year, it is always an excellent opportunity for increasing awareness and appreciation for our local residential architecture and design culture, specifically modern homes. Whether it is mid-century homes that still exist in their original condition, restorations, renovations, or recent construction, they all offer opportunities for exposure to quality design. Through the variety of digital and printed media, modernism is perhaps more accessible than ever, but nothing can replace actually experiencing a project in person. These tours provide that opportunity. I am proud to be a part of this years event.” CLIFF WELCH, AIA Welch Architecture
“As a longtime resident of the White Rock Lake area, I can't think of a more vibrant community to live and work. My husband and I fell in love with the lake and the unique vibe of Old Lake Highlands back when searching to buy our very first mid-century modern home almost 20 years ago. It has been a pleasure to watch our children grow up here and for our family to be active members of the community. Since living in the neighborhood, we haven’t missed a single year of the White Rock Home Tour. So now, as a Realtor and proud mom of 2 Hexter alums, I am pleased and honored to sponsor the White Rock Home Tour, and to give back to the community that has contributed so much to our family.” JENNIFER RILEY RICE, REALTOR Heather Guild Group @ Compass
“I was the Chair for the 2013 White Rock Home Tour while my daughter attended Hexter. It was a true highlight of being at Hexter and watching the talented planning team come together and have a lot of fun pulling off a very successful home tour that year. I am still good friends with many of those team members and recently sold one of their mid-century modern homes last year. All the hours of planning are truly worth it when you get to see everyone touring the amazing homes and enjoying the wonderful architecture on those beautiful spring days. Best wishes to this year's team and tour!” DENNIS COLEMAN, REALTOR Ebby Halliday

Please join us for our 16th year

of celebrating mid-century and modern residential architecture, interior design, and landscape design in East Dallas, all to benefit the students and teachers of DISD’s Hexter Elementary.

24 Hours in Dallas? The Most Exciting Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Only have one day in Dallas and looking to make the perfect itinerary?

No Bulls&#!: If you’ve only got enough time for a day trip to Dallas, Texas, it really is all you need. I was even able to tack on Fort Worth since there was only one thing I wanted to see there.

It’s not that there’s nothing to do in Dallas Texas. If you have only a day in any city, you’re not trying to go to every museum and stroll around every city park…just the iconic ones.

So take it chill; here is a one day itinerary of the best things to do in Dallas and Fort Worth. If you’re interested or have more time in this Texas city, listed are other potentially fun things to do that may be of interest at the end.

JFK Assassination & Sixth Floor Museum Tour

Best Attraction of Dallas

  • Learn the story of John F. Kennedy’s assassination
  • Museum Admission & Transportation Included

Dallas and Fort Worth Overview

Dallas is the ninth-largest city in the United States, and this doesn’t count its Siamese sister city Fort Worth. As in every large city, expect decent nightlife, good food, bad parking, and fun things to do.

They also do have that good ol’ southern hospitality going for them. There are three main districts I’ll be separating the itinerary into:

  • Main Street District (Downtown Dallas)
  • Nearby Arts Districts

You can cover all areas of Dallas in one day unless you are an avid museum-goer.

Sample One Day in Dallas Itinerary (Lots of Walking)

Below is a suggested sample Dallas day trip itinerary to see the best places in a time-maximizing way. Scroll down for a more detailed description of the Dallas attraction.

If you have more time, switch and swap with some other great fun things to do listed at the end of the post.

  • Park your car at The Sixth Floor Museum to see the history behind the assassination of JFK. (I learned that when I got to Dallas)
  • Once you’ve learned the political atmosphere and timeline of JFK’s assassination, seeing Dealey Plaza has a lot more sentiment
  • Start walking through downtown Dallas passing the Old Red Museum and the JFK memorial .
  • Check out the AT&T Discovery District . They have events on most weekends.
  • Lunch act The Exchange Hall or The Farmer’s Market. Shop local at The Shed if it’s the weekend.
  • Continue to artsy Deep Ellum, then walk/uber/bus/ join a tour back to your car.
  • Check out Bishop Art’s District for some street art and afternoon coffee.
  • Combine a tour to Fort Worth making it in time before the sunset to see the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Budget Tip: Save money if you plan on doing a few attractions from the Dallas Citypass . It may be worth looking into getting one here.

Best Things to Do with one Day in Dallas & Ft Worth

1. the sixth floor museum.

So if you’re like me and didn’t know that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy happened in Dallas, then I’m here telling you that now. The city designated the Sixth Floor Museum to journey through JFK’s legacy and his untimely death carried out by Lee Harvey Oswald. Can you guess which floor he shot out of?

If you’re a history buff, the Sixth Floor Museum is not short. I think I was in there for at least 2 – 3 hours.

If you park at the Sixth Floor Museum’s lot, there is a fee, but if you park in Lot C, you’re good until nighttime. Parking in Dallas was difficult, especially on the weekend.

Visit the Dealey Plaza Sixth Floor Museum

Address: 411 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75202

2. Dealey Plaza

Dealey Plaza had more sentiment after coming out of the Sixth Floor Museum. I look to the spot where JFK died, and it’s not just another part of the road but where a pivotal moment of American history happened. It’s strange how something can change meaning with more knowledge and context.

Walk through Downtown Dallas

The Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza are just on the cusp of downtown Dallas, so they are the perfect starting location to walk into the skyscrapers of the city center. In order, here are a few things to point out for your self-guided walk.

Want to learn even more about Dallas? Book This 3 Hour City Highlights Tour

3. Old Red Museum

The looming, ornate Old Red Museum is sure to catch your eye as you walk into downtown Dallas. This castle-like building was built as a courthouse in 1892 but turned into a museum.

Address: 100 S Houston St, Dallas, TX 75202 ; The museum has moved from the Old Red Courthouse and is currently closed to the public. (Update 2024)

4. John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza

Only one block from Dealey Plaza, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza symbolizes the “freedom of President Kennedy’s spirit”.

Address: 646 Main, Dallas, TX 75202

5. The Giant Eyeball

I could not tell you why there is a giant thirty-foot-tall blue eyeball in the middle of downtown.

Address: 1601 Main, Dallas, TX 75201

6. AT&T Discovery District

Now for some fun, the AT&T Discovery Park is a social hub for locals and tourists alike, with events happening every weekend, people passing out AT&T merch, a football game projected on the side of the building, a DJ, and even a great market, but I’ll get to that in a second.

Address: 308 S Akard St, Dallas, TX 75202

AT&T Experience

Aside from the park, get techy with it in the AT&T experience (next to the AT&T store). Just walk in to play free video games and see what new AI or AR simulations the company is working on.

Where to Eat Lunch

From where you are, there are two options of millennial food courts to check out.

7. The Exchange Market

If you’re already in the AT&T Discovery Park, the Exchange Market might be a no-brainer if you’re already feeling the hunger rumbles. This food court houses 16 dining choices and two full-service bars, all in a newly constructed modern dining experience in the AT&T Discovery Park.

Address: 211 S Akard St, Dallas, TX 75202

8. Dallas Farmer’s Market & The Shed

If you decide to walk (or get your car), you can go to The Market Shops at the Farmer’s Market. More like a hangar filled with a variety of food options

If you’re coming on the weekend, The Shed at the farmer’s market is an open-air pavilion selling locally made desserts, artisan souvenirs, or locally grown produce. They are open Saturdays (9am-5pm) or Sunday (10am-5pm) only.

Note: It is hard to get parking if you’re here on the weekend.

Address: 123 Taylor St, Dallas, TX 75201

9. Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is the go-to neighborhood for art lovers and instaworthy graffiti murals. Quirky and fun, this expansive arts district is filled with hidden gem art galleries, unique shops, and fantastic street art.

If you’re walking from downtown, it will be just across the highway. Or otherwise, join this small group walking tour , which includes a visit to this live music capital of North Texas.

If you’re planning on staying for some nightlife, Deep Ellum has events every day. Check out their events page for more information on their event calendar.

10. Bishop Arts District

Can you tell that I love art? If you haven’t had enough art galleries and street art from Deep Ellum, drive to the Bishop Arts District . There are over sixty mostly locally-owned shops around, and I’ve heard that it’s a excellent place for some obscure coffee shops.

For another amazing arts district, next time you’re in Sin City, step off the strip to 18B district .

11. Fort Worth Water Gardens

The Fort Worth Water Gardens was my one Fort Worth bucket list thing to see. Look how cool it is! The shadows and colors change in this cool-looking fountain depending on the time of day. The Water Gardens’ park features three pools of water: the aerating, the quiet, and the active pool.

Address: 100 E 15th St, Fort Worth, TX 76102

Other Things to Do in Dallas

Before you go, let me give you my top tour picks in Dallas:

Dallas City Parks

12. klyde warren park.

If you were to visit any Dallas parks, it should be Klyde Warren Park . Aside from having a little bit of a nature reprieve from the urban landscape, many fun activities are available there. Often, events are held in this park ranging from yoga to meditation sessions, movie nights, and live music. There are also a bunch of food trucks in the park.

13. Pioneer Plaza

Claimed to hold the largest bronze monument in the world, Pioneer Plaza takes the motto “Everything’s bigger in Texas” and applies it to 49 bronze longhorn sculptures.

Address: 1428 Young St, Dallas, TX 75202

Dallas Arts District Museums

The Downtown Arts District is home to some of the city’s favorite museums. It is also one of the largest art parks in the United States.

14. Dallas Museum of Art

With a price tag of free and more than 22,000 art pieces on display, the Dallas Museum of Art is worth swinging through if you’re an art museum lover.

15. Crow Collection of Asian Art

The Crow Collection of Asian Ar t showcases Asian art and cultures of mainly Japan, China, India, and Southeast Asia.

16. African American Museum

Continuing with our Dallas art museums is the African American Museum , dedicated to preserving and displaying African American culture and art. This museum is also free.

17. Nasher Sculpture Center

Gaze at over 300 modern and contemporary large-scale structures in the Nasher Sculpture Garden in the Arts District.

18. Perot Museum of Nature and Science

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science takes us through the journey of our Earth from the past to now.

Where to Stay in Dallas

Since you’re most likely just planning on spending a day in Dallas, you will probably want to stay close to downtown to hit all the attractions quickly. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

Final Thoughts: Even Less than One Day in Dallas?

If you have even less time, then these are the things to do you should prioritize in Dallas.

  • Sixth Floor Museum
  • AT&T Discover District
  • Ft. Worth Water Gardens

But if you are choosing which city in Texas to focus most of your time on, I would choose to prioritize Houston and Austin.

It has no bedrooms and is listed for $2.4 million: the "strangest home in Dallas" is back on the market

By Erin Jones

Updated on: June 14, 2024 / 10:38 AM CDT / CBS Texas

DALLAS —  What's been called the " strangest home in Dallas " is now back on the market. Listed at $2.4 million, it has no kitchen or bedrooms and just one tiny bathroom.

From the outside, James Grover's home blends into the North Dallas neighborhood near Coit and 635, but he said everything is just for show.

"The windows are fake," he said. "The front steel door is completely fake."

When Grover bought the house three years ago, it looked completely different.

"When we first bought the house, it was completely gutted," he said. "It wasn't even operational."

A disguised AT&T facility in a residential neighborhood

He says the 5,700-square-foot home was originally built in the 1990s to disguise an AT&T data processing center.

His company, Mountain Top Contractors, decided to transform it.

"We are a second chance faith-based construction company and when we saw this opportunity come up, we knew it was too good to pass up," he said.

They created a data center and bitcoin mining facility with state-of-the-art technology.

He said they've been able to grow their business and now, a new opportunity has presented itself so they're putting the house back on the market .

"The perfect buyer for this would obviously be someone in the technology field," Grover said.

All the technology will be included in the sale price. He said it will be operational from day one, which is why there's already been quite a bit of interest.

5 things to know about Tom Kim, another Dallas-area resident making his mark on PGA Tour

By SportsDay Staff

Over the years, golf fans have familiarized themselves with Dallas’ “Big 3″ in the sport. That group consists of Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris.

Those watching this weekend’s Travelers Championship saw another golfer with Dallas-area ties make a statement. Maintaining a steady performance at TPC River Highlands, Tom Kim battled closely with Scheffler in a race for first place.

Here are five things you might not know about Kim:

1. The basics

Full name: Joohyung Kim

Get the latest D-FW sports news, analysis, scores and more.

Birthplace: Seoul, South Korea

Birthday: June 21, 2002 (22 years old)

Residence: Dallas

Career wins: 3

Related: Scottie Scheffler claims sixth PGA Tour win of the season at Travelers Championship

2. His name

As you can see above, Kim’s “real” first name isn’t Tom. So, why does he roll with the shorter nickname? He credits a children’s cartoon for inspiration.

After winning the Wyndham Championship in 2022, Kim explained the reasoning behind his name choice to reporters. The cartoon behind the shorter name was Thomas the Tank Engine.

“It’s just a stubborn me, like you’re supposed to let your parents name yourself and I was like, ‘Nope, I’m gonna name myself Thomas,’” Kim said. “I loved the show as a kid. I haven’t watched it or anything, but apparently I really loved the train and I was like, ‘You know what? I’m gonna name myself Thomas.’”

Kim added that there were a few other names he considered going by when he was younger. As a “Toy Story” fan, Kim was particularly fond of Buzz Lightyear’s name.

He said that as the years went by, people started calling him Tom over Thomas.

3. When did Kim move to Dallas?

In the summer of 2022, the South Korean golfer chose North Texas as his U.S. base. Needing a place to train, Kim started practicing at Trinity Forest Golf Club with Cameron McCormick.

McCormick is Spieth’s longtime swing coach. Since moving to Dallas, Kim has developed close friendships with each member of the aforementioned Big 3.

He once spent Christmas with Spieth, got a letter of recommendation from Zalatoris to join him at Dallas National Golf Club and has earned rooting interest from members of the Scheffler family.

4. Shares a birthday with Scheffler

This is just another connection Kim shares with one of the area’s top golfers.

As Kim revealed earlier in the week, he and Scheffler already have a traditional way of celebrating June 21. The duo will spend part of the day together eating pizza.

“We had some pizza earlier in the week. I had a lot of pizza, so I kind of told myself, ‘Normally I wouldn’t do that in a tournament, but it’s my birthday,’” Kim said. “It’s kind of a tradition. Me and Scottie have the same birthday, so we had an early birthday celebration.”

5. Career achievements

Still in the early part of his professional career, Kim has already secured a few key victories on the PGA Tour. After winning the Wyndham Championship during the 2022 campaign, he won the Shriners Children’s Open twice.

He joined Byron Nelson as the only players to have won the same PGA Tour event twice in the same season. Kim also represented the International Team during the Presidents Cup in 2022.
