FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families   Together

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. As Congressional Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of national security – twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades – the President and his Administration have taken actions to secure the border, including:

  • Implementing executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum when encounters are high;
  • Deploying record numbers of law enforcement personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the Southern border;
  • Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
  • Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
  • Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

  • Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
  • This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
  • These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
  • In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
  • Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.
  • This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

  • President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
  • Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
  • Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.

India Visa status: How to track your application

Applying for an Indian visa is a critical step in your travel preparations, but the journey doesn't end there. Monitoring the progress of your application is just as important to ensure everything is on track for your upcoming trip.

Fill me in

In this guide, we'll walk you through checking your Indian visa application status online. In addition, we’ll break down how to understand the validity of your visa, which is a problem many travelers face due to the confusing terms. With detailed instructions and helpful tips, you'll have the tools to stay informed every step of the way. Let’s get started.

How to check your Indian visa application status online

There are three primary ways you can check the status of your Indian visa application online: through the iVisa website, the government website, or the visa application center website.

Through the iVisa website

Whether you need an Indian Embassy Visa or an Indian eVisa , we offer an easy and streamlined process that’s designed to remove the stress out of visa applications**. Once you've submitted your application, checking its status via our website is pretty straightforward.

Go to the iVisa website and click on “Login”.

Enter your order number or email address and click the “Continue” button.

You’ll be redirected to a page where you’ll see your visa application status.

One of the benefits of using our website is we’ll keep you updated through every stage of your visa application process for your peace of mind .

Through the Indian Government website

Visit the India Visa Application Portal .

If you applied at an Indian diplomatic mission, click “For regular/paper visa by Indian mission/post, apply here.” If you applied for an eVisa, click “For eVisa by Bureau of Immigration, apply here.”

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Check Your Visa Status.”

Enter the 12 digits of your Application ID. For paper visa application, you can find it on the receipt issued by the Indian mission where you submitted your application. For eVisa applications, the Application ID can be found in the acknowledgment email sent after your submission.

Enter your passport number.

Carefully enter the captcha code.

Click the "Check Status" button for paper visa applications. For eVisa applications, click on the “Advanced search for eVisa only” button.

The current status of your visa application will be displayed on the next page.

Through the VFS Global website

If you’re not eligible for an India eVisa, you may need to apply for your travel permit through a visa application center (VAC). VFS Global is the main VAC that deals with Indian visa applications. Once you’ve submitted your application, here’s how you can track its status on their website.

Go to the VFS Global website .

Select the country you applied from and the country you are going to (India).

Click “Take me to the website.”

Select the “Track your application” tab at the top of the page and then click on “Track your visa application status online”.

Fill in the reference number/Application ID you received when you submitted your application and your last name (or your date of birth, depending on your nationality). You can find your reference number on the invoice/receipt issued by VFS Global.

Click “Submit” to view the status of your application.

Through the BLS International website

BLS is another VAC that deals with Indian visa applications. Once you’ve submitted your visa application, here’s how you can track its status on their website.

Go to the BLS International India Visa website .

Select the country you applied from.

Click on “Track Application”.

Select the Submission Type and Application Type (you may not be presented with these options depending on your nationality).

Fill in the following: reference number/Application ID, Date of Birth, or Passport Number.

Carefully enter the captcha code (or select “I’m not a robot”).

Click “Track Application (or select Submit)” to view the status of your application.

Managing your stay in India: How to check your visa status

Once your visa has been issued, there are two important dates that you need to be aware of: the date of issue and the date of expiry.

If you’ve been granted a visa that’s valid for 365 days(1 year) or 5 years, the date of issue kicks off the validity period of your visa . You can enter India from this date onward. The number of entries and maximum duration of each stay will be indicated on your visa. The date of expiry marks the last legal date of your stay in India . You must leave the country on or before this date; otherwise, you risk overstaying your visa.

Fill me in

Visas valid for 30 or 60 days operate differently . The date of issue doesn't mark the start of the visa’s validity period. Although you can enter India from this date, your visa's validity begins from the day you actually arrive in India .

For example, if your visa was issued on March 1, 2024, and you arrive in India on March 20, 2024, you can stay until April 19, 2024, with a 30-day visa, or until May 19, 2024, with a 60-day visa.

The indicated expiry date on 30- and 60-day visas is the cut-off date for entering India, not the end of the visa’s term . For example, if the visa expires on June 1, 2024, you need to enter India before that date, and then your 30 or 60 days of allowed stay starts from the date of entry.

Fill me in

Just like with the longer visas, the number of entries and maximum duration of each stay will be indicated on your 30- or 60-day visa.

Visa Application Process Explained for Indian Students

  • Posted on June, 25, 2024

Visa Application Process Explained for Indian Students

A growing number of Indian students are pursuing higher education overseas as globalization changes access to education, which calls for thorough visa application. Understanding the process and standards is critical for obtaining visas to study abroad.

This article clarifies complications, providing insights into visa categories, application procedures, and key suggestions to help Indian students confidently navigate their way to international study. Also, if you are a student and travelling back to your homeland, you must Grab cheap flight tickets from USA to India through Tripbeam for a stress-free journey.

Types of visas

Indian students aspiring to study abroad can encounter various visa types based on their destination country and academic pursuits. Specifically focusing on visas for studying in the US, these include the

F-1 Student Visa

  • J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa
  • M-1 Student Visa
  • F-2 and J-2 Dependent Visas
  • Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

People who desire to engage in academic programs at universities recognized by the United States, or in programs to improve their English are granted this visa. You need this visa if your course requires more than 18 hours per week. This visa is available to secondary school students who are registered at a public institution.

One must be aware of the Impact of Visa Rule Changes , as they can affect travel plans, eligibility for entry, duration of stay, and the documentation required. Staying informed ensures a smooth travel experience and helps avoid potential legal issues or denied entry.

Exchange Visitor Visa

Foreign people can travel to the United States to engage in exchange programs, but they have to be accepted and authorized by an official program sponsor before getting a visa. The J Visa is intended to foster the interchange of information and skills across a variety of industries. Exchange guests can include:

  • Students of varying academic levels
  • Professors, Research Scholars, and Professional Trainees
  • Visitors come for travel, advice, or study.

M-1 Student Visa

This visa is for individuals pursuing non-academic or vocational training in the United States. Non-immigrant visa holders with an A, E, H-4, F-2, G, J-2, L-2, or M-2 visa can enroll in public secondary and elementary schools. However, if a student takes a leave of five months or longer from their studies, they risk losing their F-1 or M-1 status, unless their studies require the break.

Dependent Visas

The F-2 and J-2 Dependent Visas are for dependents of F-1 or J-1 visa holders entering the US. Dependents, including spouses and unmarried children under 21, may study but typically do not have work authorization.

Visa Waiver Program

Indian students coming to the US for studies do not typically utilize the Visa Waiver Program, but it’s valuable to be aware of. It enables citizens from eligible countries, including India, to visit the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. Travellers must obtain authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization before their trip.

The application process for visas

Indian students can start their visa application process by filling out the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application on the US Department of State website . This form requires personal and academic details. Once they complete the form, applicants then schedule a visa interview at the nearest US Embassy or Consulate in India, typically arranging it through the US Visa Information and Appointment Services website.

Applicants should prepare their academic plans and financial situation before the interview by gathering the necessary documents (see below for more information) and arriving on time.

After they successfully complete the interview and document verification, officials grant qualifying applicants visas that allow them to enter the United States for the duration of their academic program. Consequently, it is critical to check the visa stamp for accuracy and follow any specific criteria or limits.

The Necessary Documents For Your Application

Candidates must compile and prepare a thorough set of papers before their immigration interview. A valid passport, Form DS-160 confirmation page, SEVIS fee receipt, and relevant forms issued by the US educational institution based on the visa type. They must also prepare financial papers, academic transcripts, standardized test results, and any other documents requested by the consular official.

You must prepare all of these documents to prove your identity, the reason for your trip to the US, and your ability to support yourself financially while enrolled in classes.

For those seeking a last minute flight deals to India from USA , Tripbeam is an excellent choice for a reliable and affordable travel partner.

Importance of Visa Status Check

By verifying your visa status, you gain insights into the progress of your application. It's not just a bureaucratic checkpoint; it's a practical tool that empowers you to make informed decisions.

This check is crucial for managing expectations – knowing whether your plans are on course or if you need to make some adjustments.

Luckily, now you can track your visa application status completely online , making the process much easier than before. This way, you remain in control of your journey from the comfort of your home.

While checking your visa application status, understand the meaning of the different stages. Here’s a brief explanation of each:

RECEIVED : Your visa application has been received and is now undergoing the first assessment by the corresponding authorities.

UNDER PROCESSING : Your visa application is under review. Officials examine your documents, conduct background checks, and analyze the final decision.

ISSUED : This status confirms your visa was approved. You can now move forward with your travel plans.

REJECTED : This status indicates that your visa application wasn't successful. The exact reasons for denial may appear in a separate notice.

Please be aware that these are the most common visa statuses. Still, there might be other options depending on the country and type of visa.

In short, it’s essential to regularly track your visa application if you want to:

Stay informed about the active duration of your current visa.

Anticipate any issues, including visa renovation (if necessary).

Avoid potential problems while traveling, including overstaying.

Universal Methods for Checking Visa Status

Checking your visa application isn’t as difficult as you think since now it’s possible to do this process online. Here are some standard methods to track your visa application with your passport or ID number :

Official consulate or government website : Many countries provide dedicated online platforms where applicants can log in with their credentials to check the status of their visa applications. These portals offer real-time updates and are user-friendly.

Embassy or consulate contact : Another option is to contact the respective visa application center (usually a consulate or an embassy) handling the application. You can do this via email or phone, where officials can provide updates or guidance on the visa status.

Application tracking systems : Some visa application processes incorporate tracking systems. You receive a unique tracking number upon submission, allowing you to track the progress of your application through an online tracking tool. You need a valid tracking number to use this method.

SMS or Email Alerts : In some cases, immigration authorities send automatic notifications via SMS or email to inform you about changes in your visa status. This method keeps you informed without requiring proactive checks.

Understanding Visa Application Status Categories: Immigrant vs. Nonimmigrant

The first thing to ensure when applying for a visa is what type of visa you need. Many factors influence this, including your travel purpose, passport, current funding, and more.

Here are some of the most common types of visas across the globe. Keep in mind these are only some options, but depending on the country, there might be more:

Immigrant Visas:

Purpose : Immigrant visas are for those seeking permanent residency in the destination country.

Intent : With these visas, people wish to establish permanent residence, often with the prospect of eventually becoming citizens.

Process : The application involves a comprehensive assessment, including background checks and interviews.

Examples: Family-sponsored immigration, employment-based immigration, diversity visa program.

Nonimmigrant Visas:

Purpose :Nonimmigrant visas are for people seeking temporary stay for specific purposes.

Intent : Nonimmigrants plan to stay temporarily, such as for tourism, business, education, or specialized work assignments.

Process : Applications focus on demonstrating the temporary nature of the stay and often require proof of ties to the home country.

Examples: Tourist visas, student visas, work visas, exchange visitor visas .

Troubleshooting Refusal: What to Do Next

Experiencing a visa refusal can be disheartening, but it's essential to approach it with a strategic mindset. Here's a guide on what to do with it:

Understand the reason : Carefully review the refusal letter to identify the specific grounds for denial. Understanding the reasons is crucial for addressing any issues in your application.

Consult with authorities : If the refusal is unclear, consider contacting the embassy or consulate for clarification. Seek guidance on the specific issues that led to the denial.

Reassess and rectify : Thoroughly reassess your application once you understand the reasons for refusal. Rectify any inaccuracies, provide missing documents, or address concerns raised during the evaluation.

Consider reapplication : You might have the option to reapply depending on the circumstances. Ensure you've addressed the issues that led to the initial refusal and submit a stronger, more comprehensive application.

Evidence of changes : Provide evidence if your situation has changed since the initial application. This can include updated financial documents, employment status, the validity of your passport, etc.

Check eligibility : Reflect on whether your current circumstances align with the eligibility criteria for the visa. If significant changes have occurred, ensure that you meet all the requirements.
