In Search of the Northern Lights from Portsmouth

The incredible light show of the Aurora Borealis is a truly spectacular sight that's at the top of many people's bucket-lists and there's no better way to see them than on a Northern Lights cruise. When you cruise to see the Northern Lights, you can do so on a mini cruise, a longer cruise or even by incorporating a cruise and stay package to make your holiday that little bit more special, with typical ports of call along the way including Norway's Lofoten Islands, the Svalbard Archipelago and Reykjavik in Iceland.

Best time for a Northern Lights cruise

As it's a natural phenomenon, it's hard to predict exactly when you're going to see the Northern Lights, however thanks to the fewer hours of daylight throughout winter, this is the best time of the year to see them, specifically from October to March. Clear skies also make for the best viewings, meaning that the beginning and end of this season provide some of the most spectacular views of this enthralling natural display.

Best cruise lines for a Northern Lights cruise

With many lines providing Northern Lights cruises, there's guaranteed to be an itinerary that perfectly suits your needs. From short cruises to longer itineraries, luxury ships and more budget-friendly options, the perfect ship is waiting to take you on a cruise to see the Northern Lights. Here are some of the cruise lines which offer the best Northern Lights cruises:

  • Hurtigruten - offering coastal cruises, shorter voyages and expedition cruises, Hurtigruten have a variety of itineraries to take you to see the Northern Lights onboard their unique ships, packed with all the amenities you could need for the holiday of a lifetime.
  • Fred. Olsen - with cruises to see the Northern Lights sailing from Southampton and Newcastle, seeing this breathtaking light show has never been easier thanks to Fred. Olsen. What's more, their smaller ships mean you'll feel at home from the moment you step onboard.
  • P&O - enjoy the iconic British cruising experience on one of the country's best loved cruise lines while voyaging to Norway to see the Aurora Borealis. Complete with exciting shore excursions and everything you could need onboard, this is bound to be a truly memorable experience.
  • Saga - designed for over 50s, enjoy a Northern Lights cruise that's tailored exactly to your needs. Whether you like faster paced activities or more laidback excursions, Saga will help you tick these incredible lights off your bucket list in a way that's perfect for you.

What to do on a Northern Lights cruise

While the Northern Lights may be the main draw of a cruise to this part of the Arctic Circle, it doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of other things to explore and discover when you arrive in this spectacular part of the world:

  • Spot whales, polar bears and other Arctic species either from your ship or by taking a hike to a remote spot
  • Dog sled ride across the snow
  • Get active by trying your hand at cross-country skiing
  • Explore small fishing ports along the way where you can meet the locals and learn more about life in each destination

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Northern Lights Cruise Lines

Top northern lights cruise destinations and shore excursions.

The main destination for a Northern Lights cruise is the north of Norway where you get the chance to glimpse the spectacular Aurora Borealis as well as visit fascinating ports and embark on exciting excursions. Another option is Iceland and Greenland, during which you can visit the iconic capital cities in these countries before seeing the light show. In addition, during an Alaska cruise you might get lucky as there is a lot of Aurora activity here, however during most of this season there is too much daylight, so don't be disappointed if you don't get to see them.

Vesteralen and Lofoten Islands

The picture-perfect ports and mountainous landscapes of these beautiful islands are a must-see during your cruise to see the Northern Lights. Located in northern Norway, they are also home to plenty of archaeological sites and museums detailing Viking life, meaning you can learn more about this remote part of the world.

Follow in the footsteps of famous explorers and visit Tromso, said by many to be the gateway to the Arctic. Here you can visit historical sites including the impressive church and old harbour area, as well as learning more about Norway's polar past, before heading out on exciting expeditions such as snowmobile and husky dog sledding adventures across the snow.

Spitsbergen

For the more adventurous cruisers, this southernmost Arctic Circle island in Norway is the perfect stopoff. Almost completely covered in glaciers, while you're here you may get the opportunity to watch polar bears roaming freely, as well as having the opportunity to hike across the breathtaking landscape or travel by dog sled with guides holding rifles as protection from the polar bears.

If you want to enjoy a more urban experience during your cruise to see the Northern Lights, look no further than the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. From bathing in the iconic geothermal Blue Lagoon to diving into the thriving nightlife, a visit to this impressive city is a great way to visit somewhere new during your cruise.

With a visit to Nuul, the capital of Greenland, cruisers can learn more about this fascinating country by taking a trip to the museums, art galleries and historic old harbour area of the city, before visiting the country's largest microbrewery. What's more, there's also plenty of opportunity to glimpse some of the wildlife that calls this part of the world home, including several species of whale at Disko Bay.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

How to Experience the Northern Lights From a Glass Igloo or Villa in Finland

Where to See the Northern Lights in Finland

When to see the northern lights.

  • Best Glass Igloos and Hotels for Aurora Viewing in Finland

Seeing the northern lights in person is a major goal for many travelers. The show put on by Mother Nature (or, more accurately, by the sun experiencing a coronal mass ejection and sending charged particles hurtling toward Earth that appear as gorgeous green, pink, and purple lights) is truly a sight to behold. If you're ready to chase the northern lights, it’s time to plan a trip to Finland.

Finland has become a major destination for northern lights seekers because the aurora borealis is visible there some 200 nights a year, and there are plentiful hotels and resorts ready to host you with accommodations designed so you can see the lights from your bed. Here’s everything you need to plan an epic northern lights trip to Finland, including the best glass igloos, snow huts, and luxe villas to book.

Adventure Tip

Now is the time to book your once-in-a-lifetime northern lights adventure. The sun is expected to reach solar maximum in 2024 or 2025, and auroras may appear more frequently and intensely during this period.

The key to a good northern lights viewing experience is to get as far away from city lights as possible. The darker the area, the brighter the lights will appear. That’s why it’s a good idea to head to northern Finnish destinations at or above the Arctic Circle, like Lapland. As Visit Finland notes , you can see the lights in the southern portion of the country, but they only shine here about 10-20 nights per year.

Courtesy of Octala

Give yourself the best chance at seeing the lights by booking a visit between late August and early April. Visit Finland says this is when the skies are darkest and the nights are likely to be clear enough to view the lights. During this time, the northern lights are usually present at least every other night. That means, even if you plan for just a long winter weekend, there's a solid chance you may get to see the northern lights for yourself. You can even keep an eye on Northern Lights activities via the Finnish Meteorological Association’s space weather website .

What to Pack

Prepare for chilly weather when you go northern lights hunting in Finland. For example, in Kiruna, Finland's northernmost city, the average winter temperature barely cracks 25°F, according to WeatherSpark . January is the coldest month, with an average low of 2°F and a high of 17°F.

That said, you'll want to pack more than a few extra layers, especially if you expect to head out into the wilderness to view the lights. Visit Finland notes that the lights can be fickle, appearing or disappearing at any time throughout the night (usually between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.), meaning would-be viewers should expect to stay out for several hours. So yes, pack the extra socks. And gloves. And do not — we repeat, do not — forget to pack your camera and tripod, as you'll undoubtedly want to document this unforgettable experience.

Best Glass Igloos and Hotels for Aurora Viewing in Finland

Arctic treehouse hotel.

Perhaps the most famous igloo accommodation in Finland is the Arctic Treehouse Hotel , located in Rovaniemi. With just 37 rooms, it's a place where guests can expect ultra-personalized service. Each room comes with all-glass walls and calming neutral-toned interiors which place all the focus on the view outside. All you need to do is cozy up in bed and wait for the show to begin.

Seeking some luxury on your northern lights getaway? Book a stay at Octola . The high-end accommodation has just 12 rooms and two chalets spread across nearly 1,000 acres of private land that is home to wild reindeer and plenty of dark places to see the lights at night. Want to bring some friends along? Whole resort buyouts are available.

Kemi Seaside Glass Villas

For a minimalist stay, book a few nights at Kemi Seaside Glass Villas . Located near SnowCastle , the all-glass villas (which include a glass roof) make it feel as though there's nothing between you and the natural landscape all around.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort East Village is another rather popular location for northern lights seekers and Instagrammers. The resort boasts more than 200,000 Instagram followers who flock to the page to see the gorgeous images of both the northern lights and the resort itself. Made up of glass igloos, the resort allows every guest to view the lights from the comfort of their own little hub. The resort also has log cabins available for those looking for added privacy.

Lucky Ranch

For a unique Finnish experience, book a stay at Lucky Ranch . The low-key accommodation has traditional rooms available, but you're not here for traditional. Instead, book one of its snow huts. Yes, they are made entirely out of snow, so you can't get the same viewing experience from bed, but you may be willing to trade that for bragging rights. And, Lucky Ranch happens to be in a prime northern lights location above the Arctic Circle, so you can always just step outside the hut, look up, and see the lights.

Northern Lights from a Glass Igloo: Everything You Need to Know

Northern lights igloo

Watching free-flowing waves of vivid greens, pinks, purples and yellows dance around a star-spangled sky, it’s easy to see why the Aurora Borealis is crowned as one of the world’s seven natural wonders. The phenomenon is exclusive to the Northern Hemisphere, with Scandinavia coveted as one of the best places on the planet to experience the marvel.

While watching the Aurora Borealis is magical in any setting, sleeping under the stars in a luxury, custom-made glass igloo is guaranteed to take your experience to the next level. Want to know more? Read on for answers to frequently asked questions about watching the Northern Lights from glass igloos, an unforgettable experience that’s offered with many of Scandi Travel’s tours of Lapland.

Why you should experience the Northern lights from a glass igloo

Glass igloos elevate your experience by combining the luxuries of a hotel with the sheer magic of sleeping under the Northern Lights and the Arctic sky. There’s nothing quite like gazing up at the Aurora Borealis from your plush bed, with a wood fire crackling in the background and a steaming hot sauna at your fingertips.

Beyond front row seats to the Northern Lights, staying in a glass igloo in Lapland unlocks all kinds of unique Scandinavian experiences. When travelling to the Muotka igloos, for instance, you’ll board a traditional husky sled and get a real feel for the jaw dropping landscape. If that’s not enough, you can even embark on reindeer safaris, snowmobile adventures and authentic Saami cultural experiences.

The best location to watch the Northern Lights from glass igloos

High latitude and very little light pollution make Finland one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights. As Finland’s northernmost region, Lapland is one of the most rewarding destinations in Scandinavia. Best of all, it’s dotted with incredible destinations for viewing Aurora Borealis.

Generally, the further north you go the better your chances. With this in mind, Scandi Travel has handpicked some incredible destinations combining fantastic Northern Lights viewing opportunities with premium accommodation.

Surrounded by snow-dusted Arctic forest, the enchanting village of Saariselkä sits 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and is a fantastic base for Aurora Borealis tours. The remote Muotka wilderness lodge promises an utterly unique experience, with beautiful cabins featuring panoramic windows for viewing the Northern Lights. Hotel Kakslauttanen puts you on the fringe of Urho Kekkonen National Park, an untouched wilderness that showcases the distinct natural beauty of Finland.

You’ll love experiencing Aurora Borealis from luxury Finland Northern Lights igloos, designed to immerse you in the spectacular light show. There’s even a spellbinding Snow Chapel, making Hotel Kakslauttanen a dream come true for destination weddings. Inari, a tiny village tucked away in Finland’s most sparsely populated municipality, is also a wonderful place to experience Aurora Borealis, as well as the unique culture of Lapland.

The best time of year to watch the Northern Lights from glass igloos

Winter offers the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights, with long dark nights and very little ambient light from the sun. The best time to visit is from December to February, though brilliant sightings of the Northern Lights are also reported from late August to April. In Finnish Lapland, the Northern Lights are visible on around 200 nights a year, meaning your chances are excellent if you travel in the right season.

Is it cold inside a glass igloo?

All igloos are constructed with a special thermal glass to ensure the inside temperature is always at a comfortable level. So, even if the outside temperature drops to below minus-thirty degrees, you’ll still be toasty warm inside your glass igloo.

The glass dome never develops condensation or frost which means your views of Aurora Borealis and the sparkling night sky are always pristine. You’ll also fall asleep in style with high thread count linen, cosy duvets and plush pillows.

What to wear when watching the Northern Lights in a glass igloo

Inside your cosy, thermally insulated glass igloo, you’re free to wear whatever you like. You’ll enjoy complete privacy from your neighbours which means you can get cosy with pyjamas and Ugg boots, or wear nothing at all. Don’t forget your swimming costume, as many igloos featured on Scandi Travel tours treat you to private saunas and the chance to enjoy an invigorating dip in an ice hole. Of course, on any winter tour you’ll be spending a good amount of time outdoors so be sure to pack warm layers and thermals, as well as windproof and waterproof shells.

Things to bring when watching the Northern Lights in a glass igloo

The Northern Lights are so mesmerising that you don’t need anything to enhance the experience. That said, Aurora Borealis can often dance around in the sky for hours, meaning it can be nice to have a bottle of wine and a block of dark chocolate on hand in your private glass igloo.

How many nights you need to give yourself a shot of seeing the Northern Lights

Like most natural phenomena, the Northern Lights don’t adhere to a strict schedule which means it’s best to give yourself at least two to three nights to experience the magic. Scandi Travel makes it easy to maximise your chances, with most tours including several opportunities to view Aurora Borealis.

On the Lapland Wilderness 4 Day Tour to Saariselka with Northern Lights & Glass Igloo , for example, you’ll embark on a three-hour after dark minibus tour from your hotel in Saariselkä to chase Aurora Borealis, then get a second chance when staying in a glass igloo at the Muotka Wilderness lodge.

Book your Northern Lights Glass Igloo in Finland

Watching Aurora Borealis dance in the sky is one of the most memorable and unique experiences on offer in the Northern Hemisphere. That’s why most tours offered by Scandi Travel include at least one unforgettable Northern lights experience, if not more.

For the ultimate experience, book a Scandi Travel Lapland tour featuring an overnight stay in a glass igloo. Sleeping under a canopy of twinkling stars and hypnotic Northern Lights is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is guaranteed to crystallise as a highlight of your trip to Scandinavia.

View The Northern Lights This Year On This Unforgettable, Astronomy-Themed Cruise

Northern Lights in Norway

If the Northern Lights are on your bucket list, an astronomy-themed cruise in Norway could be just the ticket. The cruise and ferry line Havila Voyages recently announced three upcoming voyages in 2024 for February, March, and October. Each 12-day cruise will give travelers the chance to sail along the striking Norwegian coast in an environmentally responsible ship, learn about astronomy, book unforgettable excursions, and view the famous green and purple ribbons of light shimmering above the Earth.

Even better, you can book your ticket with confidence, as each journey is backed by the company's Northern Lights Promise , says the cruise website. If you don't get to see the aurora borealis during your trip dates, you can re-book a week-long cruise in an inside cabin for free with all your meals comped. With NASA's predictions for 2024, though, we doubt you'll need to resort to that. The sun will be more active than usual this year in what's known as a solar maximum, offering stargazers more opportunities to see the lights.

Cruise features and amenities

Havila Voyages boasts comfort and style. The modern cabins start at $1,280 for 107 square feet of space with a bed, a sofa, a coffee maker, and free WiFi. For a more luxurious experience, you could always book a suite for $2,543 with 161 square feet of space and a private balcony — the perfect place to relax and take in some of the best views of Northern Europe . The onboard amenities include a promenade deck to walk around the ship, two saunas, a gym, a hot tub that faces the passing landscapes, and shops to pick up books and souvenirs. Your ticket also includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner at three dining areas. The route from Bergen to Kirkenes passes through four different "food universes," explains the cruise website , making each day a different culinary experience.

At night, you'll be able to look up at the sky for a pure view of the cosmos without any light pollution. To contextualize the experience, there will be experts from the Royal Astronomical Society onboard giving lectures. On the February and October voyages, author of the Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy, Ian Ridpath, will speak on the science behind the Northern Lights, the Apollo missions, and how comets float through space. On the March voyage, space scientist and professor John Zarnecki will speak about the search for extraterrestrial life, Saturn's largest moon Titan, and strange cosmic phenomena, among other topics. The lectures are an add-on feature for $303.

Port stops and excursions

Unlike a traditional cruise line, Havila Voyages operates the Norwegian Coastal Express, which connects locals to different communities up and down the coast. The route has been in operation for 130 years, stopping in 34 ports along the way for nearly two weeks. As such, you'll have ample opportunities to explore new towns for hours at a time. If the ship passes through a town that piques your interest at night, don't worry. You'll get to see it during daylight on the way back down.

The cruise can also arrange plenty of excursions. You can tour the North Cape plateau, a puffin paradise and the northernmost part of Europe with a stunning cliffside view from 1,000 feet above the Arctic Ocean. The Snowhotel Kirkenes is another fan-favorite, which is exactly what it sounds like: a hotel with furnishings made of ice, from the chairs to the fireplace. You can also swap the cruise ship for an inflatable boat and get close to the world's strongest maelstrom, Saltstraumen, the result of a narrow channel with pressure from the sea on one side and a fjord on the other. The fight between the two tides leads to a dazzling display of vortexes that change throughout the day. As if that isn't enough, there's also hiking, e-biking, kayaking, and three different dog-sledding adventures to choose from. Both onboard and on the ground, this is one well-rounded visit to Norway you won't soon forget.

Best time to visit the Northern Lights

Increase your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis by booking a Northern Lights cruise at the right time. For the Arctic Circle, book itineraries that sail between December and March. In Alaska, the Northern Lights season stretches all the way from August to April, but the chances to spot the lights increase between September and March. Once you’re on your cruise, be on the lookout for clear skies - and a great Northern Lights forecast. Just like the weather forecast, the light show can be reasonably well predicted on various phone apps. With voyages mainly taking place in winter, you’ll need to pack for weather that can struggle to get above 0°C, but the snowy landscapes, crisp frost air - and of course, the Northern Lights, are more than worth the extra layers in your suitcase. Steeped in myth and lore, the Northern Lights are a magical sight that capture the imagination of cruise passengers of all ages.

What not to miss in a Northern Lights Cruise

Glaciers and ice caves.

D on’t let the shorter days stop you from exploring on land. Glistening ice caves and vast glaciers await eager explorers. In Iceland, your journey will start in a monster truck equipped to handle the ice and snow - and finish with you strapping on a pair of crampons to give you extra grip on the ice. The fresh blast of arctic air and mesmerising blues of the ice caves are worth braving the chilly temperatures for.

Whale Watching

B ooking a Northern Lights cruise takes you to some of the best whale watching locations in the world. Join a whale watching tour in Iceland to spot orcas off the north coast, wrap up warm in the Arctic Circle to get a glimpse of humpbacks or tour the waters of Alaska’s Kenai Fjords National Park to seek out grey and fin whales. Looking to stay warm? Take your binoculars up to the bar and keep an eye on the waves. Many cruisers spot whales while they’re having pre-dinner drinks or tucking into breakfast!

Christmas Markets

M ake space in your Christmas calendar for a Northern lights cruise in 2023. Christmas markets pop up across the Arctic Circle from November onwards. Shop for decorations and gifts while you watch ice skaters in Reykjavik, sample some seasonal foodstuffs in Norway's official Christmas town - Tromso or pick up Alaskan arts and crafts in Anchorage. But remember to keep an eye on the skies as you browse the stalls. Seeing the Northern Lights dance above a Christmas market would be the perfect end to a day in port!

Top destinations for the Northern Lights

F ew sights can overshadow Alaska’s vast wilderness, but once night falls, your eyes will be firmly on the skies. Alaska’s long Northern Lights season means there’s a wide variety of Northern Lights cruises to choose from. By day, you can dig into the history of the gold rush, uncover Ketchikan native heritage or watch out for wildlife as you sail by tower glaciers and step ashore into snow sprinkled forests.

H ead to Iceland on Northern Lights cruises from the UK to see the land of fire and ice at its best. Glistening with a frosty shimmer of snow, the rugged wilderness of Iceland is a Northern Lights hotspot from September to March. Warm up in a hot spring, shop for the toastiest wool jumpers in Reykjavik and spend your nights with your eyes on the skies to see the lights dance behind Iceland’s volcanic peaks.

S eeing nature’s most beautiful spectacle on a Northern Lights cruise to Norway feels like winning life’s jackpot. Sailing through some of the world’s most magical fjords, while the skies sparkle with stars and the greens and purples of the Northern Lights is nothing short of magical. Add in Norway’s stylish port cities, nourishing Arctic menus and historic sights and it becomes a cruise to remember.

Tips for cruising to Northern Lights

Currency considerations.

M ajor credit cards are accepted in Alaska and the Arctic Circle. But you may travel to remote spots in search of the Northern lights. Carrying a small amount of local currency means you’ll always be able to buy a warming cuppa while you wait for the lights to appear.

Customs / traditions to be aware of

I n Alaska and the Arctic Circle, traditional hunting methods are still championed. Which may mean that restaurants, souvenir shops and bars may have some unsettling items to buy. It’s not unusual to see reindeer or whale meat for sale - as well as animal furs.

Making the most use of short durations in port

B efore you sail, download an app to check the Northern Lights forecast. If you’re heading ashore - and there’s no chance of seeing the lights, you can use the time to soak up the local culture instead.

T he wintery conditions that come with the Northern Lights season open up a few different travel options. Snow shoeing, sleigh rides and sledding are ideal ways to try out some more traditional winter travel methods. Though the thrilling speed of a skidoo ride gets you from A to B a little faster.

They are made in the shape of an igloo and are nestled in wooded but undisclosed locations. After your tour reservation is booked you will receive directions to meet a guide. The guide will take you as the last tour stop to your intimate bubble hotel and a night under the stars.

Once you arrive at your destination and find your hotel you will see that it is truly transparent. But don’t be alarmed, each bubble igloo will have enough wooded coverage to facilitate privacy. Some bubbles will also have a white panel wrapped around the base of the walls to cover the bed from view. However, the ceiling and rest of the walls will be clear so you can feel surrounded by nature’s beauty. A night in the forest inside a bubble igloo will be a transcendent and peaceful experience.

The interior has a minimalist design to give you a glamping (glam camping) aesthetic. Bubble igloos include a comfy double bed for two adults, small lamps, charging power strips and even a space heater. The bubble is kept inflated by an efficient and soundless ventilation system. It keeps the bubble warm and regulates the temperature so it can be cozy even in the winter .

Now I’m sure the question of the hour is where can I use the bathroom and shower? Have no fear, the 5 Million Dollar Hotel has you covered. All of the unique igloo bubbles are a short walking distance from a facility that has bathrooms and showers.

How Can You Book A Bubble Igloo?

The Bubble Igloo Hotel in Iceland is called The 5 Million Star Hotel and you can make a reservation on this website . You can only make a reservation by booking the Golden Circle or the South Coast Tour in winter or summer.

The price is 59,900 ISK (483 USD) per person. There is an additional fee of 29,950 ISK (241 USD) if you travel solo. On the date of your tour, you will be picked up and dropped off in Reykjavik in a luxurious suburban SUV. Food is not included but you will be taken to places for breakfast and dinner.

Golden Circle Tour

When you book the Golden Circle  tour in winter or summer you are in for a lovely treat. There are five stops on the tour. First, you will visit the famous national park called Thingvellir. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is called “Parliament Fields.” You can also see the separation of two continental tectonic plates.

The next stop is the well-known Geysir hot spring area that inspired the name for geysers all over the world. Then you will see the glorious Gullfoss Waterfall that looks like a heavenly two-step staircase.  The last stop before the Bubble Hotel is dinner and the Secret Lagoon. You can take a relaxing and otherworldly bath in this natural hot spring. Afterward, you can finally lay down to see the whimsical night sky in one of the nine Golden Circle bubbles.

South Coast Tour

On the South Coast Tour you will experience sites that are definite must-sees in Iceland. There are four stops and the first one is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This waterfall has breathtaking views and stands at 65m high (213ft). You can even walk a steep staircase to see behind the waterfall to capture a rainbow photo effect. Be sure to wear a raincoat to protect your clothes from getting wet.

The second stop is the powerful Skogafoss waterfall. In addition to great views, you can observe several bird species nested in the cliffs and see stray farm sheep. On stop three you will visit the hypnotizing Black Sand Beach called Reynisfjara, located in a small coastal town called Vik. In 1991 it was voted one of the Top 10 non-tropical beaches to see in the world.

However, it’s not advised to go swimming at Reynisfjara because the water is too cold and dangerous. You can enjoy the sheer beauty of the gigantic basalt stack structures, the midnight black sand, and take stunning photos. The backdrop will be one for the record books.

Then at long last after dinner, you can get comfortable in your bubble igloo hotel. Keep in mind there are only six bubble hotels in the South Coast area, so book in advance.

Watching the Northern Lights

Iceland has steadily become the preferred location to see the Northern Lights. It’s not as cold as Canada, Finland, Norway or Sweden and the lights are also more vibrant in comparison.

Therefore, watching the Northern Lights is one of the most popular activities in Iceland. The vibrant Northern Lights, also known as the dancing Aurora Borealis, are a phenomenon that makes you marvel in awe. It is naturally occurring and caused by many electrically charged particles from the sun crashing into the Earth’s atmosphere. These particles are then moving in the magnetic field between the northern and southern poles causing a light display.

4X4 Camper Rental Iceland Northern Lights

You just need an evening devoid of city lights and cloud-free skies at the right time of the year. Another pro tip is to avoid seeking the lights when there is a full moon. The light can drown out the colors.

Peak viewing time to see the lights is between fall and winter, specifically September to March. In fall, the nights are long but not too cold to stand outside. During the winter season such as the winter solstice, the dark nights can be up to 19 hours long.

Don’t wait to book a bubble hotel because the ultimate Iceland experience awaits you. What better way to take in the twirling Northern Lights? Sleep under the stars close to nature and create lasting memories.

Northern Lights Tours in Canada

Canada Winter Trips | Rocky Mountaineer Train

Northern lights tours in Canada are many things – spectacular, spiritual and awe-inspiring to name a few.

A natural phenomenon better viewed than explained, you can witness the aurora under the velvety night sky of the yukon or winnipeg, where the purples and greens dance some 100 miles high in the distance. , best seen between late-august and mid-april, we recommend at least three nights for optimal viewing. , during the day, try other northern activities like ice fishing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, then turn your eyes back to the sky come night for a show you won’t forget..
