Dubai is probably the most expensive and least backpacking-friendly country I have ever been to . Accommodation, food, alcohol and any sort of activity always turn out to be very expensive. On top of this, public transportation is quite limited, therefore on occasions, you are forced to take a taxi.

Besides that, whereas in other expensive cities (such as London or New York), you can always find a cheaper alternative and free events, in Dubai it seems that only the expensive choice is available. For any kind of social event, you always end up paying an exorbitant amount.

And why is that? In Dubai, people have money. All these events are exclusively organized for expats and these expats, are willing to pay whatever is needed in order to enjoy a couple of beers and have fun. They don’t care because they can afford it.

Yeah, backpacking in Dubai on a budget is not easy. This is not a coincidence. Sheikh Mohamed has a very clear objective, which is for  Dubai to become the number one destination in the world for luxury tourism .

However, whereas it’s true that, in order to enjoy fancy Dubai, you need to spend a lot of money, there are loads of free activities and ways to save money. I lived in Dubai for over two years and, as the budget traveler I am, I was always trying to have fun at the minimum cost.

First quick tips on how to have your cheap holidays to Dubai

In Dubai, activities and events are pretty expensive. Here’s a couple of tips that will help you cut your costs when planning your trip to Dubai.

Remember that, in Dubai, health care is private

If you want to know more options, read how to find the right travel insurance

Get The Entertainer

The Entertainer is an endless series of discounts for hundreds of restaurants, bars and all sorts of activities, which all expats have.

Most of the discounts are 2 for 1 and it is valid for 1 year, from January to December. If you bought it in June, it will be only valid for six months. It’s available in book format and for mobile as well.

If you are alone and plan to stay in Dubai  for just a few days , it may not be worth it to get it. However, if you have friends to share the cost with or you are planning to stay longer, with only going one night out or to do any activity with your kids, you will already cover the cost.

I would never recommend something which I would not trust or use and the truth is that The Entertainer was an essential tool that helped me cut my budget for Dubai after living there for 3 years.

Budget Tours

If you want to get the most budget tours, I recommend you book them through GetYourGuide , a pretty cool website that offers loads of different deals and tours to Dubai at the lowest possible prices.

Useful Page events

In order to find out about all the events and free activities, I recommend you to check  Time Out Dubai   and  What’s On Dubai regularly.

They announce all cheap and free events.

Top free things to do in Dubai

This Middle Eastern metropolis is not just about massive shopping malls and expensive and glamorous events but, actually, there’s a lot of cheap things to do in Dubai that are very related and aim at experiencing the authentic Emirati culture.

Camel racing

One of the few things you can do in Dubai to experience the authentic and real Emirati culture. Camels can run very fast and attend a race is frankly impressive. These races usually take place on Fridays from 6am to 8am, but only from November to March. Where?

In the Dubai Camel Racing Club . This is, definitely, on my top list of free things to do in Dubai.

Budget trip to Dubai

Deira Gold Souq

If you like gold, apparently, the Deira Gold souq sells some of the cheapest gold-jewelry in the world. However, even if you’re not into gold, strolling down the alleys in search of good picture opportunities is also a lot of fun.

At the Deira Gold Souq, you can also find a store window containing the biggest ring in the world and be seeing dozens of tourists posing for a picture in front of it is an attraction by itself.

Hindu temple (Shiva and Krishna Mandir)

Although Dubai has a huge Hindu population, Shiva and Krishna Mandir is the only Hindu temple in the city.

The best time to visit it is on Fridays around noon when all the Hindus go there to bring offerings to their gods. It’s located in the heart of Bastakiya, the old part of Dubai.

Free things to do in Dubai

Street wrestling

One of my favorite ones. This modality of street wrestling is very popular in Iran , Pakistan , and India. On Friday afternoons, the Indian and Pakistani workers, meet and go to enjoy it in the streets of Deira, near the fish market.

The event is not about the fight itself but the atmosphere, really far away from the glitzy and pretentious Dubai.

Crossing the Creek on a boat

Pay only one Dirham and enjoy a fabulous ride in the abra, the traditional water taxi to cross the atmospheric Dubai Creek from Bur Dubai to Deira on the opposite side. The quaint old wooden boat has a fishtail carved out of wood.

Cheap things to do in Dubai

Horse racing in Meydan

One of the best free things to do in Dubai is going to see a horse race, the national sport and also Sheik Mohamed’s favorite. It’s completely free. It takes place on Thursdays at 7pm, from November to March.

A spectacle is guaranteed, and not only because of the horses, but also because of all the different types of people who come and gather.

The general entrance ticket is for free but you can also book more premium seats which allow you access to the bar and restaurant.

For more information, check out the official website .

Walking around Souq Madinat

A traditional Arab souq from the 21st century and built in a fancy Dubai style. There are fountains containing giant turtles and you get to see fantastic views of the Burj Al-Arab.

The Souq Madinat is also a great place to hang out in the evenings, as there is a wide range of bars and restaurants serving alcohol. However, they are quite pricey so you should better come here with The Entertainer .

Cheap fun things to do in Dubai

Wandering around Al Bastakiya

Bastakiya is the old part of the city, which was destroyed during the 80s to build an office complex.

However, thanks to a preservation campaign, the project was stopped and the houses restored. Nowadays, traditional Arab Gulf buildings and homes stand along its streets.

In Bastakiya, you can also find the Dubai Museum which, for only 3 Dirhams, it gives you a great summary of the UAE’s history, from before the black gold times. It also gives you a glimpse of future innovative city projects.

Deira fish market

Update: It’s definitely closed!  If you like walking around markets, Deira fish market is, without a doubt, the most authentic one in the city. And it’s not only interesting to visit, but also sells the cheapest fish in town. It’s a real shame that they closed this market, as it used to be one of the best cheap things to do in Dubai.

Cheap places to visit in Dubai

Dubai Marina and its skyscrapers

Dubai is about skyscrapers and the good thing is that they are impressive and free to see. The marina is around 8km long, with fancy yachts moored all along the waterfront.

On each side of the marina, there is a mosque (just one has been built so far) which is also worth seeing.

Backpacking Dubai

Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is a small but beautiful mosque which non-Muslim people can visit and the only cultural site to visit in the new part of the city.

Travel backpack Dubai

The walk and beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence

By the beach, the area next to Dubai Marina is called Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). It’s sort of a promenade trying to imitate the one in Santa Monica.

There are camels, the beach, clean toilets and free wifi. What else do you need? The Walk is one of the best things to do in Dubai on a budget.

4 days in Dubai

The bottom of Burj Khalifa

What? This is one of the best cheap places to visit in Dubai, right? At 823 meters, the Burj Khalifa is the highest building on Earth and observing it from the bottom is completely free.

Besides, there is a fountain show which takes place every half hour from 6pm on, every day of the year.

Backpacking in Dubai: Best accommodation for backpackers and budget travelers

Land prices in Dubai have massively increased over the past few years. Nowadays, it seems that this has stabilized, however, prices are almost equal to those in Tokyo and London.

If you really want to travel in Dubai on a budget, here’s the best and cheapest suggestions for both backpackers and budget travelers.

Important: In summer, hotel prices tend to decrease drastically. That’s because, in summer, the weather is so hot that many events and activities are temporarily closed. Traveling during this season is way more economical but, to be very honest, it’s not very recommendable.

Budget Hostel – At The Top Hostel – If you are backpacking in Dubai, this is probably, the best budget option for budget travelers. It’s located right next to where I used to live, in front of the beach, at the most Western-friendly neighborhood in the city (Marina). The hostel is a 66th-floor apartment and it offers several dorms.

Budget Hostel – Backpacker 16 Hostel – This one is cheaper than the previous hostel but the location is not as epic. However, the position is not as bad, as it’s located in Tecom, a neighborhood which is pretty well connected to the metro and just 15 minutes driving from Marina.

Budget Hostel – Backpackers Hostel   – This was the first backpacker’s hostel ever in Dubai. It’s located in Al Karama, home to a large Indian community and where you find the cheapest restaurants in the country. It’s also very close to Old Dubai and Deira. The only disadvantage is that it’s really far away from the cool expat areas but, if your objective is to experience the authentic Dubai, this should be your preferred choice.

Backpacker Hostel –   Backpacker Tina  – Budget hostels are slowly being opened all across the city and, in Marina, Tina is the most budget one. Like most buildings here, everything is great, brand-new and the building has all kind of facilities, including a gym and a pool! If you are a backpacker, this is the best hostel to stay in Dubai .

Couchsurfing

If you are backpacking in Dubai, here the Couchsurfing community is pretty active and finding a couch to surf is feasible. Besides, many events are organized.

Dubai on a budget: How to save money on food

In Dubai, the price of a meal varies significantly among restaurants across the city. One day, you may eat an amazing and filling Vietnamese soup for only $5, and the next day you can end up eating a shitty sandwich and pay more than $30.

What do you need to avoid?

If you really want to travel in Dubai on the cheap, forget about eating in hotels and restaurants where they serve alcohol. They can charge you double just because you can order a beer along with your meal. At the average night pub, a burger can easily cost you around 90AED ($25).

If on top of this you also order a beer, then you’ll end up paying a minimum of $35 for a crappy dinner. So, how to save money on food?

First, remember to get The Entertainer

As I said before, The Entertainer offers 2×1 in most Dubai restaurants, including the ones located in expensive hotels.

Eat at mall food courts

I know, they don’t serve the best food ever, but many stalls offer reasonably good meals for as little as 25AED. Food is very varied, from Italian to Lebanese, Indian and Oriental.

The best quality-price restaurants

Outside of hotels, JBR and downtown, there are plenty of high-quality restaurants offering good quality meals for only 50-60 AED (around 15USD). Dubai is a city composed of hundreds of thousands of expatriates from all parts of the world.

That means there are also hundreds of restaurants with all types of authentic cuisine. Here’s a list of awesome (and cheap) restaurants which I compiled:  Best (and cheapest) restaurants where the expats go .

Cook at home

If your accommodation has a kitchen, I suggest you buy groceries in the supermarket and cook at home. LULU Hypermarket is the one with the lowest prices. Apart from groceries, they also sell ready to eat meals cheaply.

There’s a LULU in All Barsha, right next to Mall of the Emirates. Other LULUs are in Bur Dubai or Deira. Carrefour is the alternative to LULU. Prices are slightly higher, but the range is larger. There is a huge Carrefour inside Mall of the Emirates. This would be the best way to bring costs down and keep your trip to Dubai on a budget.

Backpacking in Dubai: How to save money on alcohol

Dubai is a very conservative, Muslim country, therefore alcohol taxes are fairly high. On average, you pay 40AED ($12) for a pint of beer in the most normal bar. Yes, getting drunk in this city is expensive, and getting wasted even more. How to save money on alcohol?

Download Guzzle App

Guzzle is a mobile application which provides 2 for 1 offers on beverages in a large number of restaurants. You can download and use the app for free. They also offer a premium version, which merely gives you a higher number of discounts

Get the best out of the happy hour

Most of the bars in Dubai push for happy hour from Sunday to Thursday, from 5pm to 8pm. Some of the bars offering good deals are Tribeca (Ocean View Hotel), Barasti (Westin Hotel) and Garden 7 (Media One Hotel).

Ladies night

If you are a girl, then this might be your lucky day because loads of bars give away drinks to all girls. Tuesday is the most popular day for Ladies night. The most famous one is China Grill (Westin Hotel). Girls have open-bar all night long. For free. Promise.

Go for a Brunch

If your objective is to get smashed, I definitely recommend you go for a brunch. What’s going for a brunch? For many expats, Friday brunch is sort of a ritual. It consists of all you can drink and eat from 12 noon to 4 pm. There’s no alcohol limit.

Prices range from 150AED to 800AED. The Entertainer   offers 2 for 1 on many of them. If you don’t have it, some of the cheapest and most popular brunches are Pizza Express (Movenpick, JLT) and Double Deckers (Al Murooj Rotana, Downtown).

Buy alcohol at the airport

It seems pretty obvious but the truth is that, in Dubai, you can’t buy alcohol unless you are a resident and have an alcohol license. As soon as you land, go to the airport duty-free, and stock-up on alcohol.

Trip to Barracuda

If you run out of duty-free alcohol, only 60km from Dubai, there’s a liquor store named Barracuda where you can buy alcohol without a license. The downside is that you can only get there by car. If you are renting one, great.

Otherwise, remember to buy enough at the airport. How to get there? It’s located in the Emirate called Ajman. Google maps finds it as  Barracuda Wine Shop, Ajman .

Budget Dubai: How to save money on transportation

If you were to ever ask me what’s the thing I hate most about Dubai, I would say that it’s a city built to move around in exclusively by car. It’s a vast city with a very low population density. Distances are huge.

The area of the city is a perfect 40x40km square and there’s only one metro line that goes through it in a straight line. The bus system is not convenient at all. If you can’t reach a place by metro, you need to go by car. Below, I will show you the cheapest way to travel in Dubai.

The cheapest option. Don’t buy single tickets. Ask for a NOL card at the counter. It costs 20AED, but it comes with 15AED of extra credit. A short trip costs 3AED, whereas the longest one costs 8AED.

The metro is convenient only if you go to the main touristic sites: Marina, Burj Khalifa, Deira or Bur Dubai. If you wish to go anywhere which isn’t close to the metro, I recommend you get as close as possible by metro and take a taxi from there.

Renting a car

Honestly, if you are traveling with other people, you should hire a car 100%.

Gas is cheap and outside of Dubai, there are loads of interesting things to do which are accessible only by car.

The public bus is not convenient at all, except for one line: line number 8.

It goes parallel to the metro from Marina to Bur Dubai but by the sea. It passes by interesting places such as Souq Madinat, Burj Al-Arab and Kite Beach.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

Dubai Travel Guide

Last Updated: September 11, 2024

The towering and iconic Dubai skyline lit up at night

Most people use Dubai as a stopover destination. They fly in, spend a night or two, then fly onward to their final destination. While Dubai is often seen as “Vegas in the desert,” there is a surprising amount of things to do here. There’s depth to the city that its popular image doesn’t accurately portray.

I found myself loving my first visit here so much that I extended my stay.

Dubai is a city trapped between worlds. It’s a place with a conservative culture and old-world customs while at the same time a Middle-Eastern Vegas where anything goes (so long as it’s behind closed doors). There’s a lot of partying that happens here.

But, beyond that, I was surprised at how much there was to do in this city. This city is more than just a flashy place to spend money. There’s a lot of cultural activities, museums, attractions, tours, and things to do here.

Dubai is a fascinating, multicultural city that deserves a lot more than a stopover. This travel guide to Dubai will help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your visit.

Top 5 things to see and do in dubai.

The sprawling sands and dunes of Dubai rolling into the arid distance

1. Visit the Burj Khalifa

The tallest building in the world, which opened in 2010, boasts a whopping 163 floors. You can go up to the 125th floor for 169 AED for epic views of the city. And for 399 AED you can climb even higher to floor 148 and visit the exclusive lounge. From there, you get panoramic views of the city and desert. Towering 555 meters (1,820 feet), the iconic tower contains a hotel, private residences, corporate offices, and a bar/lounge. At night, the building is illuminated by a spectacular light show of fish, palm trees, and other scenes while the fountain below dances to music. Get your tickets in advance here .

2. Take a desert safari

If you want to get a taste of the desert, head out on a day-long safari . You’ll be able to explore the desert, watch for birds and other wildlife, eat some traditional food, and take in the sweeping vistas. Tour offerings include desert jeep tours, camel riding tours, and horseback riding excursions. A day-long excursion starts at around 439 AED per person.

3. Visit Global Village

This is a massive entertainment extravaganza, with shopping, dining, and live performances all coming together to create an incredible cultural experience. It’s like Epcot Center at Disney World, except it showcases the different cultures of the Middle East. Enjoy ice-skating at Snowfest Ice Rink, visiting Ripley’s Believe It or Not, or taking a thrilling ride at Carnaval amusement park. Admission is only 18 AED.

4. Explore the Dubai Miracle Garden

This quirky and colorful garden opened in 2013 and is spread over 72,000 square meters (775,000 square feet), making it the world’s largest natural flower garden. It’s home to over 150 million flowers and all kinds of flower and plant sculptures. In addition to the natural beauty, you can experience various performances that change each week, and a daily flower parade with live music and choreographed dancers in full flower garb. If you get hungry during your visit there are more than 30 food and beverage options including cafes, candy shops, and healthy juice bars. Admission is 75 AED.

5. Have fun at Kite Beach

If you’re into kitesurfing or water sports, this is a cool place to catch some waves. The artificial beach is one of the most popular in Dubai and features lots of sugary white sand, kids’ activities, food and beverage vendors, fitness areas, and even a library. The winds pick up in the afternoon, making it a good time to hit the water or just sit back and watch others do it. If watersports aren’t your thing, come here to catch some rays and relax as it’s free and open to the public.

Other Things to See and Do in Dubai

1. wander the marina.

The marina area is surrounded by tall buildings and is composed of a beautiful scenic boardwalk. Here you’ll find lots of fancy boats, beautiful condos, and bars and restaurants overlooking the harbor. Be sure to check out Pier 7, which is seven floors of restaurants and bars on the water. Personally, I liked Asia Asia, with its gaudy Asian theme.

2. Hit the mall

Malls in Dubai are not like malls anywhere else in the world. There are over 65 malls in the city with more on the way. People love going to malls here! Between the Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, you’ll find a ton of amazing things to see and do. There’s luxury shopping, nightly fountain shows, an aquarium inside the Dubai Mall (which has a 270-degree underwater tunnel you can walk through), and even indoor skiing at the Mall of the Emirates (the Mall of the Emirates also has over 650 stores and 100 restaurants). You can also visit the world’s largest themed mall, the Ibn Battuta Mall. It has a Moroccan theme and is named after the eponymous explorer (it has over 270 stores and 50 restaurants too). Be sure to dress appropriately and avoid tank tops, shorts, or mini-skirts.

3. Visit the Grand Mosque

Located in nearby Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is definitely worth a half-day trip. Built between 1996-2007, the mosque and its surrounding gardens span over 30 acres. It’s almost all white too, giving it a very majestic look. It’s a 90-minute drive from Dubai (about 290 AED each way in a taxi or 25 AED on the bus). You’ll want to make sure you wear appropriate clothing since it is a place of worship (they have cover-up items available for anyone without suitable attire). During Eid, upwards of 41,000 people visit the mosque each day. Admission is free.

4. Explore Old Dubai

This is Dubai as it used to be. Markets (like the famous gold market) pepper the area, small shops line the streets, and you can get lost in a dizzying maze of alleyways. Take a boat across Dubai Creek to Deira (you can ride an abra, a traditional wooden boat) and wander aimlessly around the streets, eat at some of the traditional restaurants, explore the art district, and see Dubai as it is away from the glitz of the malls and high-rises. Don’t miss the Dubai Frame (a landmark offering the best views of the city), the gold market (which has upwards of 10 tons of gold at any time), and the spice souk (a large spice market you can browse).

5. Tour the Jumeirah Mosque

Opened in 1979, this beautiful mosque is one of two in the city you can actually visit. Built in the Fatimid style, it consists of one large room and there is a guided tour every day at 10am and 2pm (except Fridays). It’s 35 AED and comes with a great breakfast spread. If you don’t know much about Islam or the role it plays in the UAE, it’s a pretty interesting and educational tour.

6. Go deep-sea fishing

It’s quite easy to book a spot on a boat and head out to sea if you want to try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Tour operators cater to all ages and levels of experience, and most packages even include lunch. Prices vary depending on what sort of vessel you book and how long you go but expect to pay 1,500 AED for a 4-6-hour trip.

7. Relax at Jumeirah Beach

This white-sand beach is a fantastic place to sunbathe and stroll along the boardwalk. Located along the coast just south of the city’s historic district, there are lots of shops to visit, and there is even an outdoor movie theater. Not only is this a great place to visit, but it’s a great area to stay because you’re surrounded by so many things to do. There are playgrounds here for kids as well as areas to BBQ. It’s perfect for picnics but gets super busy on the weekend so try to enjoy it during the week to beat the crowd.

8. Wander the Palm Islands

On this famous man-made palm tree-shaped island , you’ll find a large shopping walkway, the Atlantis resort, the Aquaventure waterpark, and a host of fancy restaurants, bars, and clubs. It’s beautiful to walk around and explore during the day (at night, it’s pretty boring!).

9. Visit the Souk Madinat Jumeirah

This souk (market) is in a modern building designed to look like something out of Aladdin but it’s actually home to some incredible restaurants. There’s a beautiful inner courtyard pond in this complex, too. Come here if you want to splurge if you’re a foodie! Don’t miss Al Makan for local dishes, Anar for Persian cuisine, and The Noodle House for tasty Asian eats.

10. Binge at brunch

Brunch is a tradition among locals and expats. Every Friday, everyone flocks to a midday buffet of unlimited drinks and food. As the day goes on, it often turns into debauchery that would make Nero proud. However, brunch is not a cheap affair, costing as much as 700 AED. Ask your hotel/hostel staff where the cheapest brunches are. You can usually find some for under 200 AED.

How to Stay Safe in Dubai

Dubai is a very safe city. Violent crime is incredibly rare here. Petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, though they’re quite rare too. As long as you keep your valuables secure while you’re out and about you likely won’t have any issues.

Be aware that many activities that are legal in other countries are not legal in Dubai, such as displays of public affection between unmarried or LGBTQ partners, drunken behavior, dressing immodestly, swearing, photographing people without their permission, and criticizing UAE’s government.

You’ll need to dress and act conservatively here. All the wild and crazy stuff in the city happens behind closed doors. It’s a see no evil kind of thing. Don’t push the limit in public or you’re likely to get into serious trouble. Be extra cautious about being wild or “immodest” here.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here. However, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.) when you’re here. For an extra layer of safety, use the female-only cars on the metro. For more information, check out one of the many solo female travl blogs on the city to help you out.

Scams here are rare. If you’re worried about getting ripped off, you can read my post on common travel scams to avoid .

If you experience an emergency, dial 999 for the police, 998 for an ambulance, and 997 for the fire department.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Where to Stay in Dubai

Dubai doesn’t have a lot of hostels so you’ll want to book in advance if you plan to stay in a hostel. Here are my suggested places to stay in Dubai:

  • Bohemian Backpackers
  • Green Sky Apartments
  • Bombay Backpackers DXB

Dubai Travel Costs

Accommodation

  • Hostel dorms – 80 AED per night
  • Hostel private rooms – 175 AED per night
  • Budget hotels – 90-285 AED in peak season
  • Airbnb private rooms – 100-300 AED per night
  • Airbnb apartments – 250-750 AED per night
  • Sit-down restaurants – 65-150 AED
  • Casual take-out places – 45-50 AED
  • Fast food (think McDonald’s) – 30 AED
  • Beer – 45 AED
  • Cappuccino/latte – 19 AED
  • Bottled water – 2 AED
  • Groceries for a week – 500 AED

Dubai Suggested Budgets

Backpacker – 260 aed per day.

On a backpacker budget, you can stay in a hostel, cook all your meals, take public transportation to get around, skip drinking, and do mostly free activities like enjoying the beach and visiting the malls and mosques. If you plan on drinking, add 40-80 AED extra per day.

Midrange – 870 AED Per Day

On a midrange budget, you can stay in a cheap hotel or Airbnb. You’ll be able to eat out for a few meals, enjoy a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities, including as a desert safari.

Upscale – 1,425 AED Per Day

On a “luxury” budget, you can stay in a nicer hotel, eat out for every meal, drink as much as you’d like, go out for brunch, take paid tours, visit the Burj Khalifa, and rent a car for some day trips. This is just the ground floor for luxury in Dubai though!

Dubai Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Dubai is an expensive city. If you’re hanging out in the malls and restaurants that cater to expats, you’re going to spend a lot of money. That said, there are a few things you can do to cut costs so you don’t blow your budget. Here are some quick tips to help you save money in Dubai:

Bring a reusable water bottle – The tap water is safe to drink in Dubai so bring a reusable water bottle to reduce your single-use plastic usage. LifeStraw makes a reusable bottle with a built-in filter so you can ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Use Groupon – Groupon is huge in Dubai and you can find tons of discounts, 2-for-1 specials, and deals on the website. If there is something you want to do, check there first as there is a high chance you’ll find a discount.

Get The Entertainer – The Entertainer is a magazine and app that offers discounts and specials on restaurants, hotels, and activities. Pick up a copy when you arrive in Dubai. It’s not cheap but sometimes you can find the app 50% off or get a free trial. There are monthly subscriptions starting at 35 AED per month and a “lite” version that is free. If you plan to see and do a lot, it’s worth the price.

Find happy hours – Dubai is full of happy hours. Plan your drinking accordingly to avoid the city’s high-priced booze.

Skip the booze – Outside the happy hours and all-you-can-eat brunches, drinking is expensive so I would go easy on the drinking during your visit — or skip it altogether if you’re on a budget.

Eat in Old Dubai – Step away from the hotels, malls, and fancy souks meant to make you think you are in Aladdin and head into Old Dubai for cheap eats.

Pick accommodation near the metro – Make sure your accommodation is near a metro stop. You don’t want to be walking around unnecessarily when it’s scorching hot and public transportation is much cheaper than taxis.

How to Get Around in Dubai

Trees lining a narrow waterway with towering buildings in the background in Dubai

Public transportation – Dubai’s metro consists of nearly 50 stations. You can get to wherever you need to go, or close to it, with public transportation. Hours of operation depend on the day but both lines start operating from around 5:30am until about 1am. On Fridays, however, the trains don’t start running until 10am.

You’ll need a Nol Card to get around and you can buy the card at any of the ticket offices at the metro stations for 25 AED.

Fares depend on which of the zones you are traveling to. A standard ticket for one zone is 4 AED, for two zones it’s 6 AED, and if you are traveling through 3 or more zones it’s 8.50 AED.

If you can’t get to where you’re going by subway, the bus will get you there. Like the metro, the bus has different zones, and the Nol card is used as payment.

Ferry – The ferry in Dubai runs daily from three different terminals in the marina. Evening trips on the ferry are much busier, so be sure to get to the terminal 30 minutes early. Tickets range from 15-50 AED for silver class (seats in the main section of the boat) and 25-75 AED for gold class (more comfortable seats at the front of the boat).

Taxi – Taxis start at 12 AED and go up by around 2.50 AED per kilometer. Skip them if you can. They add up quickly!

Ridesharing – Uber and Careem are the two main ridesharing apps in Dubai. They aren’t usually cheaper than a standard taxi but they tend to be a lot more convenient.

Bicycle – Bikes can be rented from Nextbike for around 20 AED per hour or 80 AED per day.

Car rental – If you’re leaving the city, cars can be rented for around 190 AED per day. I would only rent one if you’re leaving the city. Otherwise, just use public transportation to get around. It will be much faster!

For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Dubai

The most popular time to visit Dubai is between November-April. The weather is cooler and perfect for desert safaris, with daily highs averaging around 27°C (80°F). Flights and accommodation will be more expensive during this time though so plan accordingly.

May-August is the low season as Dubai just gets too warm. Daily highs average around 41°C (106°F) and make exploring the city unbearable. I visited in August and it was brutal. Skip the summer if you can!

The shoulder season between September and October is when the sea becomes perfect for swimming and water sports. It’s much less busy during this time so you’ll find fewer crowds and cheaper prices too.

Dubai Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • HostelPass – This new card gives you up to 20% off hostels throughout Europe. It’s a great way to save money. They’re constantly adding new hostels too. I’ve always wanted something like this and glad it finallt exists.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • The Man in Seat 61 – This website is the ultimate guide to train travel anywhere in the world. They have the most comprehensive information on routes, times, prices, and train conditions. If you are planning a long train journey or some epic train trip, consult this site.
  • Rome2Rio – This website allows you to see how to get from point A to point B the best and cheapest way possible. It will give you all the bus, train, plane, or boat routes that can get you there as well as how much they cost.
  • FlixBus – Flixbus has routes between 20 European countries with prices starting as low 5 EUR! Their buses include WiFi, electrical outlets, a free checked bag.
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.
  • Top Travel Credit Cards – Points are the best way to cut down travel expenses. Here’s my favorite point earning credit cards so you can get free travel!

Enjoy The Best of Dubai On A Shoestring Budget

Can you really travel on the cheap in dubai.

A city best known for its glitzy high rises and shopping malls, expensive sports cars and gold-leaf tea, is it truly possible to visit Dubai on a budget?

It’s certainly no backpacker’s paradise when it comes to longer-term stays. However, if you are passing through Dubai on a shoestring budget, don’t dismiss Dubai as simply a transit stop.  Get out of DXB and come explore!

There are plenty of things to see and do for free in Dubai , as well as budget accommodation options and cheaper alternatives from transport to takeaway dinners that may still get you through the city of gold while watching those purse strings.

Getting Around Dubai On A Budget

Where to stay in dubai on a budget, free and really cheap things to do in dubai, how to eat in dubai on a budget.

You can check out our complete guide to Dubai Money Matter here

Unlike many cities where the cheapest way of getting around town is on your own two feet, this option really isn’t all that practical in Dubai.

Whilst there are areas around town where you can walk extensively, such as around the Downtown Dubai/Dubai Mall, or around the Dubai Marina and JBR , getting from A to B to see the city’s sites is pretty difficult without some form of transport.

Not to mention for a large portion of the year, it’s simply too hot to walk far outside – please believe us!

Public transport systems in Dubai are quite efficient, and the Metro train driverless train system is by far the preferred method we would recommend to most travellers.

cheap travel dubai

If you are only visiting Dubai on a very short stopover, a “Red Ti c ket” Nol card is what you will need. You can purchase this paper ticket from any Metro station at a cost of 2 AED + whatever your starting fare is. You have the flexibility with Nol Red to only pay the exact amount of the fare you will need and top up each time.

Planning on staying a few days and using the Metro often? Then you will benefit from purchasing a “Silver Card”. The Silver Nol ticket costs 25 AED ($6.80 USD) however includes 19 AED in an “e-purse” and you can keep reloading it. The fare you pay when you have a Nol Card with an e-purse is less than on a Red Ticket – we explain all the different types of Nol cards for tourists here.

Taxies are the most convenient way of getting around in Dubai , door to door and certainly, what we would still recommend if you are laden down with luggage. The minimum flagfall for taxis is now 12 AED (Under $4 USD) making it quite pricey for short trips around the city though.

You can see our complete guide on how to get around Dubai here.

Other ways you can save on your Dubai travel budget include taking a traditional dhow or Abra to cross Dubai Creek rather than paying for an expensive cruise and taking advantage of FREE airport transit buses if you are transferring between Dubai and Abu Dhabi .

Dubai is a series of compromises when it comes to accommodation. As any good budget traveller will know, flexibility is key when it comes to grabbing a great accommodation deal.

  • Closer to a shopping mall or beach in Dubai , you will pay more.
  • Dubai’s older areas, closer to the airport and the border with Sharjah, are cheaper than Dubai and the flashier new area, such as JBR and the Palm Jumeirah .
  • Try to book accommodation that is well-located to the nearest Metro stop. Especially in summer you really don’t want to walk further than 1km to anywhere.

Backpacker Hostels in Dubai

It may surprise you to know that there ARE backpackers hostels in Dubai , albeit they tend to be split into male and female dormitories only; they are best for solo budget travellers through Dubai. Why not take a look at:

  • 1 World Backpackers – a home-away-from-home making it possible to sleep and WFH in one location, with stunning marina views. Your linen and towels are included here, with shared bathrooms, kitchen facilities and loads of communal entertainment options, and access to a pool and gym. Check price and availability here
  • Lunar Hostel Plus – putting you in the heart of the action on The Walk in JBR, this pleasant budget accommodation option offers dorm rooms and shared kitchen facilities, a great cheap hostel option in JBR. Check price and availability here
  • Bombay Backpackers – another great JBR hostel option with mixed and female-only dorms. There are great communal spaces to enjoy, with free wifi and linen, access to an outdoor pool and 24-hour reception. Check out pricing and availability here.

Just be warned that some hostels in Dubai are, in fact, converted apartments and most likely should NOT be operating as hostels.

Cheap Hotels in Dubai

For couples and families, we recommend you try cheap hotels instead of backpackers (most have a no under 18’s rule).

There are plentiful cheaper hotels in the older parts of town, such as Bur Dubai and Deira, still of an excellent standard relative to the star rating.

Some cheaper hotel rooms also come with the convenience of a small kitchenette to help you further manage costs.  We recommend you try:

  • Savoy Suites Hotel Apartments – In Bur Dubai, this clean and comfortable option comes with kitchen facilities and a fold-out sofa bed, plus access to a rooftop pool, fitness centre and in-house restaurant.  They offer family and interconnecting studio options and a beach shuttle bus.  Check out pricing and availability here .
  • Holiday In Express Dubai Internet City – an attractive and modern option in the Internet City area, you are within walking distance to the nearest Metro stop and marina tram. Breakfast is included, and there are onsite dining options as well as a fitness centre (no pool). Check out pricing and availability here.
  • Pearl Marina Hotel Apartments – a JBR option for those looking to stay beachside without the hefty resort price tag. You will get kitchenette facilities along with a pool in the heart of the action. Check out pricing and availability here .

A Warning On Dubai Hotel & Hostel Prices

Your Dubai budget can slowly whittle away if you don’t take note of one crucial thing – the +++.

The what?!  When you are quoted a hotel price, you will almost certainly be given the pricing BEFORE taxes and service charges.  And there are a few to be aware of!

  • Municipality fee 7%
  • Property service charge 10%
  • “Tourism Dirham Fee” per room, per night 7 – 20 AED (varies depending on the grade of hotel, also called Hotel Tax or City Tax)
You can read more about Dubai’s tourist taxes to be aware of here.

You can save on these added hotel costs in Dubai by either self-catering or dining out at restaurants that are not attached to a hotel.

Whilst on the surface, it may appear that everything in Dubai is glamorous and expensive – and a lot is – there are still plenty of activities to fill your days in Dubai on a budget.

Experience the Dubai Mall & Burj Khalifa

While it’s costly to head up the Burj Khalifa (and can involve extensive queueing at times), it’s totally free to see it from outside and enjoy the nightly light and sound fountain show that occurs on Burj Lake , Downtown Dubai, outside Dubai Mall .

  • Timings for the sound and light show are currently 1:00 pm & 1.30 pm, then every 30 minutes between 6:00 pm and midnight.

There are many great restaurants where you can grab a bite in the Dubai Mall and adjacent Souk al Bahar with brilliant views . However , on a budget, we recommend you grab some takeaway from the food court inside the Lower Ground floor of Dubai Mall and set up your own little picnic to enjoy the show.

Check out all of our ideas for enjoying Dubai by night here .

You can also enjoy an outside view of the spectacular suspended aquarium tank of Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo from within the Dubai Mall, completely free. It costs to go through the underwater tunnel and enjoy up-close encounters, but this is one of the best free aquarium shows you’ll get anywhere in the world!

Catch Some Rays at the Beach

Hiring deck chairs or taking camel rides at the beach WILL cost, but most of Dubai’s brilliant beach fronts are completely free to enter.

The most popular is Jumeirah Public Beach (also known as Sunset Beach or Umm Suqeim Beach), famous for its views of the Burj Al Arab , or why not try The Beach in JBR , or the fairly newly open La Mer in Jumeirah 1.

We have a complete guide to all of Dubai’s public beaches here

Bathroom and change facilities are free, but of course, there are plenty of cafes and vendors along these stretches of beach vying for your attention. Come prepared with towels from your hotel and a picnic lunch or dinner to avoid the temptation to spend more.

There are a few beach parks, such as Mamzar where you pay a 5 AED per person municipality fee for the upkeep of facilities, but they come with great park space too for barbequing and picnics.

Explore Old Dubai

Enjoy the historical al Fahidi neighbourhood , the Dubai Museum (currently closed for renovations), and take an abra ride (1 AED) over Dubai Creek to Deira “Old Dubai” to see the spice souk and the gold souk, or shop for a bargain in Naif market – plenty of ideas on little trinkets and souvenirs you can pick up in Dubai here.

The newly opened Al Seef area seamlessly blends between old and new Dubai to extend your creek-side stroll and further souks to explore . Dining along here is not cheap, but there are plenty of shops to stick your head into and browse for free.

cheap travel dubai

Stroll the Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk

In the cooler months, explore one of the city’s newer outdoor spaces.

Take a taxi (avoiding the obscenely expensive Monorail ) out to the end of Palm Jumeirah, marvel at the amazing Atlantis the Palm (you can sneak a peek at the start of the giant aquarium, The Lost Chambers, for free), then set out to explore the new boardwalk that curves around 11kms of the outer crescent of the Palm.

Do You Need A Dubai Tourist SIM? Wifi is widely available, but grabbing your free Du tourist SIM card is a must on short stopovers, or check out all the available Dubai tourist SIM cards to save you on expensivee roaming charges while staying connected.

There are huge discrepancies in what you will pay for food in Dubai. Forget high-end dining but do watch where you’re eating – this alone will put a premium on your food. Restaurants attached to hotels, as we mentioned above, will draw premium taxes.

In a city full of insta-perfect cafes , it’s easy to forget there are plenty of budget buys and a huge range of international cuisines to choose from.

Dining out in Dubai Traditonal Food

Try eating at shopping mall food courts. There will be the usual array of internationally known fast-food outlets, but also a great range in cuisines from smaller sellers from Lebanese to Indian and everything in between, influenced by the vast expatriate population of Dubai.

Self-catering will always be the best option to save cash. You can find plenty of small convenience stores in neighbourhoods across the city, as well as larger supermarkets that offer an extensive range of pre-made meal options in takeaway containers.

If you add alcohol to the mix, frankly, DO expect to pay through the nose for the privilege. Whilst alcohol is available to tourists and expats, it’s heavily taxed. You can learn more about drinking in Dubai here (recent changes to alcohol tax laws have done little to put a dent in the average price of alcoholic drinks).

When to Visit Dubai

Timing your trip to Dubai right can also help your budget stretch a little further.

You will find the cooler winter months of the year, broadly November through to April , are the most popular, which also means the busiest and most expensive, with loads of international events in the calendar , driving prices up.

Christmas to New Year especially hotel prices rise, and around popular events and school holidays .

The summer months are much hotter – June to September sees consistent daytime highs over 40°C (104°F). Summer says many expats ship out to their home countries to escape the heat. However, these off-peak months also have low occupancy, so it can be a great time to bag a bargain.

DUBAI TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

A mixture of sadness, pride, and joy enveloped my heart when a very dear friend announced that she had been reassigned to their company’s UAE office. Sadness because I was losing yet another friend to a faraway land. We had been very close, and the thought of not being able to constantly see her or talk to her brought tears to my eyes. Pride because this was the promotion she had been hoping for. And joy, because — and I’m embarrassed to admit this — I finally found a reason to visit Dubai.

Well, in true Catriona Gray fashion, I’m always that guy who finds a silver lining and makes a run for it. Months later, I was in Dubai.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING DUBAI

Dubai is a true global city, where people from all around the world come together. It is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The other six are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain.

cheap travel dubai

Although Dubai City is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, it is not the federal capital of the UAE. That title belongs to Abu Dhabi. Yet, Dubai is the most populous, with the biggest fraction of the population composed of migrant workers, like the rest of the country. For many, like my friend, it is a land of opportunity. Much of the economy is driven by foreign migrant workers, which make up 80% of UAE’s population and 90% of its workforce.

Dubai is also the most popular destination among tourists, registering an estimated 16.7 million visitors in 2018 alone. Dubai has become the region’s banner city for opulence and grandeur. It is well-known for its ambitious projects like its artificial offshore islands and towering skyscrapers like Burj Khalifa, the tallest man-made structure in the world.

Here are more facts about this city.

  • Location : Dubai Emirate, United Arab Emirates. UAE lies on the southeastern chunk of the Arabian peninsula in Western Asia (what many westerners like to call the Middle East). The UAE shares its borders with Saudi Arabia to the south and Oman to the east. Coordinates: 25°15′47″N 55°17′50″E.
  • Time Zone : UTC+4 (UAE Standard Time). Dubai is 4 hours behind the Philippines, Singapore or Malaysia; and 5 hours behind Japan.
  • Language : Arabic is the national language and the official language of the UAE. But English is the second language and is widely spoken.
  • Currency : UAE dirham (AED, Dhs, د.إ). AED 1 is roughly equivalent to PHP14, USD 0.27, SGD 0.37, EUR 0.24 (as of July 2019).
  • Modes of Payment : Cash and credit cards are both commonly accepted.

WHERE TO STAY IN DUBAI

Dubai is a coastal city, a long stretch of concrete caught between the waves of the Persian Gulf and the dunes of the vast Arabian Desert. The city is divided into several districts but these are what tourists should be more familiar with.

cheap travel dubai

  • Downtown Dubai. If you haven’t been to Dubai, this is probably the image that first pops in your head when you imagine the city. Downtown Dubai is where you’ll find some of the city’s most iconic structures including Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping complexes. It is also sometimes called the New Dubai.
  • Dubai Marina. This is one of the most ideal places to stay in the city, which is probably why most European expats live here. It is hemmed in by a beach and is easily accessible. It is also close to a lot of attractions.
  • Jumeirah Beach. Another seaside district that is linked to almost anywhere in the city. Jumeirah is centrally located, surrounded by the Marina, the Downtown area, and the Old City. It is home to diverse communities including Europeans, Pakistanis, and Filipinos.
  • Al Barsha. Situated between Marina and Jumeirah. The great thing about this area is that it is well-connected to the rest of the city. You’ll also find several mid-range hotels here.
  • Bur Dubai. The heart and soul of Dubai. When they say Old City, they usually mean Bur Dubai. This was the center of the city before all the developments happened. If you want a more cultural and historical approach to your trip, this is the place to be. Lots of vibrant souks (bazaars), traditional structures, assorted restaurants, and cheap accommodations.
  • Deira. Traditionally considered an extension of the Old City. Think of it as a more modern Bur Dubai, also with plenty of affordable dining, shopping, and lodging options. The best part about Deira is its proximity to the airport.

Best Area to Stay in Dubai

What’s the best area? It depends on what you want to experience and how much you’re willing to spend. The Downtown and Marina areas are closest to the modern attractions but are notably expensive. When you search for hotels online, don’t be shocked to see hotels at USD 400 to 1000 per night. Dubai is widely considered a luxury destination, so there are dozens of luxury hotels especially in these areas. There are a few more affordable options.

Bur Dubai and Deira offer a more traditional experience at a significantly lower price. If you’re on a budget, Bur Dubai and Deira may offer more options that are within your spending range. You can find a double room at a great hotel for USD 100 per night. Budget hotels are also available, offering much cheaper rooms.

HOW TO GET TO DUBAI

Dubai is served by two airports: Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).

Dubai International Airport (DXB). Located northeast of the city center, near Deira. DXB is the busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. DXB is also the hub for airlines Emirates and flydubai. These two airlines alone connect Dubai to over 150 cities around the globe.

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). Located south of the city center. Only a handful of commercial flights are operated here, primarily by Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot and European low-cost airlines like Wizz Air. Most flights are seasonal.

If you’re coming from Manila, the cheapest non-stop flights are operated by Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. Here’s a quick random search on SkyScanner.

cheap travel dubai

Emirates sometimes reduce their rates when there’s a promo.

All three airlines use DXB. Travel time from Manila is usually 9 hours, 30 minutes.

DUBAI AIRPORT TO CITY CENTER

The good news is, the Dubai International Airport is situated not too far from the city center. In fact, you can get to Bur Dubai in 15 minutes or Deira in 5 minutes. Here are some of your options.

  • BY METRO. Dubai Airport is directly connected to the metro system, so just find out the metro station closest to your hotel. Both Terminals 1 and 3 have their own metro station. There’s one train leaving either station every 10 minutes. Operating hours: Saturday-Wednesday, 5:50am-12 midnight; Thursday, 5:30am-1am; Friday, 1pm-1am. Travel time: 15-20 minutes to Bur Dubai/Downtown, 2-5 minutes to Deira Fare: AED5 to Bur Dubai/Downtown, AED3-5 to Deira,
  • BY TAXI. There’s a cab queue right outside the terminal. For taxis picked up at the airport, a flagdown rate of AED25 applies. Then, AED1.96 is charged per succeeding km. Travel time: 10 minutes to Deira, 15-20 minutes to Bur Dubai or Downtown Estimated fare: AED50-60 to Bur Dubai, AED 60-70 to Downtown.
  • BY UBER/CAREEM. Uber operates in Dubai, so if you’re more comfortable with it, you can use this app to reach the city effortlessly. Aside from Uber, there’s also Careem, another transportation app, which you can use to book a private car or even taxi.

Note that if you decide to take the metro, you’re allowed only 2 suitcases and you must store them in dedicated areas.

HOW TO GET AROUND DUBAI

Dubai has one of the most advanced transportation system in the region, with a very uncomplicated metro, plenty of ride-sharing options, and the usual taxi service. But before we delve deeper into each, it is important to be familiar with the transport zones.

The city’s public transportation network is run and managed by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), a branch of the local government. The agency has centralized all modes of transportation into a system that appears intimidating at first, but is more forgiving once you get the hang of it.

The city is divided into seven fare zones. But for tourists, most of the points of interest are within Zones 2, 6 and 5.

cheap travel dubai

Here are the zones that cover some of the most visited areas:

  • Zone 2: Dubai Marina, the Palm Jumeirah, Al Barsha
  • Zone 6: Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall), Bur Dubai
  • Zone 7: Deira, Dubai International Airport

You can use RTA’s Journey Planner to figure out the best route you can take and the corresponding fare. The fare depends on the number of zones your journey will straddle and the type of ticket you use. Speaking of tickets…

Understanding Nol Cards

Nol cards are reloadable cards that give you easy access to Dubai’s public transportation system including the metro, buses, trams, and the Dubai ferry. All you need to do is hover the card above the reader and go. It’s similar to Hong Kong’s Octopus card or Singapore’s EZ card, but because of the zonal fares, it’s actually much closer to Melbourne’s myki, if you’re familiar with it.

There are four cards available: red, silver, gold, and blue (personalized). Assuming that you’re staying in Dubai for a short time, let’s just focus on the RED TICKET because it’s the most suitable for tourists.

cheap travel dubai

The RED Ticket is a disposable paper ticket that you can top up. Here’s what you need to know about it.

  • Price: AED 6 (AED 2 for the actual card and AED 4 balance that you can use immediately)
  • Reload limit: Can only be used up to 10 single journeys or 5 daily passes. (I’ll explain these daily passes later).
  • Types: It can only be used on one mode of transportation at a time. For example, METRO only or BUS only. You cannot use one card for metro and then a bus later. You will have to buy separate tickets if you change the mode of transport.
  • Validity: Valid for 90 days.

For short-term visitors, the RED Ticket is often sufficient. But if you’re interested in other types, we have a separate post for it.

If you feel like you’ll be taking public transportation multiple times a day, you might want to consider purchasing a pass instead of paying for every single ride. Purchasing a pass means you get to use the metro or bus for an unlimited number of times within the covered period.

The pass comes in five variants, tagged by number of days: 1-day, 7-day, 30-day, 90-day and 365-day passes.

A 1-Day Pass that covers all zones costs AED 22 (AED 2 for the card + AED 20 balance).

Note that your RED TICKET must have a minimum balance equivalent to 1 trip or 1 daily pass. Other cards must have a minimum of AED 7.5. Spot checks are done, and penalties apply.

Wifi Rental and Local SIM in Dubai

cheap travel dubai

For extra help when navigating or taking public transportation around Dubai, stay connected! A good Internet connection will allow you to use travel apps like Google Maps and Uber. You can also use one of the many Dubai Metro apps available.

Klook offers pocket wifi devices for rent and local data SIM cards that you can pick up at Dubai International Airport. Choose whatever is better for you. Both options will give you access to the city’s 4G/LTE network. If you’re a group, the pocket wi-fi might be more convenient.

cheap travel dubai

Dubai Metro links most of the city’s most popular attractions. It is composed of only two lines: RED and GREEN. It’s also easy to use. Just touch on your Nol card as you pass through the gates and make your way to the platforms to catch a train.

Trains run frequently from 5:50am-12 midnight (Saturday-Wednesday); 5:30am-1am (Thursday); 1pm-1am (Friday). Note that in Dubai, weekend is Friday-Saturday.

Here are some things you need to know about Dubai Metro.

  • It is generally comfortable, but expect some crowding during rush hours (7-9am and 4-7pm).
  • There are separate cars for GOLD class passengers. You must only use it if you’re holding a GOLD nol card. Otherwise, you might be fined a substantial amount.
  • Female passengers may also choose to use the FEMALE-ONLY cars.
  • Chewing gum, eating, drinking, and sleeping are prohibited onboard the metro.
  • Nol cards have a minimum balance that you must maintain. It’s AED 7.5 for silver, gold, and blue cards; and the equivalent of one trip or a daily pass for the red ticket.
  • Spot checks are sometimes done so always follow the rules. You don’t want to get fined.

There are plenty of Dubai Metro apps available on App Store and Google Play that you can use. Just make sure you know the nearest station to your origin and destination and it will show you how to get there (including the transfers) and how much the fare is.

With its network of wide roads, Dubai is a city ruled by cars. Despite the reliable metro, the taxi remains a very popular transportation mode. There are thousands of taxi units roaming the streets of Dubai.

A special fleet of pink cabs have also been deployed to serve female passengers. These taxis can pick up solo female passengers and groups with female members, but not solo males or male-only groups.

The standard taxi rate si AED 1.75/km. But take note of the following surcharges:

  • Minimum fare: AED 12
  • Regular taxi starting fare: AED 3 when hailed on the street, AED 6 when booked. A slightly higher night time rate applies (10pm-6am).
  • Ladies taxi starting fare: AED 6 from 6am-10pm, AED 7 from 10pm-6am
  • From the airport: AED 25
  • When passing through the Sharjah border: AED 20
  • When crossing a toll gate: AED 4

By Uber or Careem

Uber operates in Dubai, so if you’re more comfortable with it, you can use this app to reach the city effortlessly. Aside from Uber, there’s also Careem, another transportation app, which you can use to book a private car or even taxi.

According to my Dubai-based friends, the taxi is still slightly cheaper but Uber and Careem have better service. But between Uber and Careem, the latter is the better, cheaper option.

By Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

At night, dinner will be served as you enjoy a traditional show, including a tanoura and belly dancing performances.

SAMPLE DUBAI ITINERARY

Here’s a sample 4-day 4-night Dubai itinerary. This assumes the following:

  • You’re a party of 2 pax, splitting some of the costs like hotel and cab fare.
  • You’re arriving at Dubai International Airport in the evening, so we added a Day 0.
  • You’re staying at a budget hotel/hostel in Deira for AED72 per night per person. Check the nearest Metro Station.
  • Your food budget is AED 25 per meal. You’ll find a lot of fast food chains or inexpensive restaurants within this budget. ZOOM, a convenience store chain in Dubai, also sells cheap packed meals.
  • You only have 1 theme park visit. For Day 3, choose among IMG Worlds of Adventure, Wild Wadi and Legoland.
  • Prices below are in UAE dirhams.

Note that the times here are just estimates, for sample purposes only. Actual times may vary so double check before your trip.

Feel free to change anything in the itinerary in order to match your preferences or flight schedule.

DAY 0 – ARRIVAL 09:40pm – Arrival at DXB 11:00pm – Buy nol ticket, top up, AED 10 11:30pm – Metro to Deira, AED 3 11:45pm – Walk to hotel 12:00pm – Hotel Check in

DAY 4 – DUBAI SOUKS 08:00am – Wake up call 09:00am – Early check out, leave bags 09:30am – Metro to Al Ghubaiba Station, AED 3 09:45am – Explore Souk places 12:00pm – Lunch, AED 25 01:30pm – Explore Bur Dubai, buy pasalubong 03:30pm – Metro to Deira, AED 3 04:00pm – Pick up bags at hotel 04:30pm – Metro to Airport, AED 3 05:00pm – Flight check-in 07:35pm – Flight out

If you follow the itinerary above, the total cost depends on what you choose for Day 3. But here are some ballpark figures per person:

  • Option A (with Legoland Dubai): AED 870 (PHP 12,110, USD 237, SGD 323, EUR 213)
  • Option B (with IMG Worlds of Adventures): AED 825 (PHP 11,500, USD 225, SGD 306, EUR 202)
  • Option C (with Wild Wadi Waterpark): AED 810 (PHP 11,280, USD 221, SGD 300, EUR 198)

The above estimates do NOT include accommodations, airfare, travel tax, and shopping expenses.

If you spend AED 72 per night on accommodations, Options A-C will cost you the following:

  • Option A (with Legoland Dubai): AED 1083 (PHP 15,100, USD 299, SGD 402, EUR 265)
  • Option B (with IMG Worlds of Adventures): AED 1038 (PHP 14,500, USD 283, SGD 385, EUR 254)
  • Option C (with Wild Wadi Waterpark): AED 1019 (PHP 14,200, USD 277, SGD 378, EUR 249)

The above estimates do not include airfare, travel tax, tips, and shopping expenses.

We added a little bit of extra allowance to cover incidental expenses, price adjustments, and other costs we might have missed.

There are many ways to further reduce the expenses. See the next section!

MORE DUBAI TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

  • Find a hotel that is within walking distance of a Metro Station , so you don’t need to take a cab all the time.
  • Cut your food budget. The itinerary above assumes you’re spending AED 25 per meal. But you can find cheaper options especially at Asian restaurants. Shawarma, manakish and sandwiches are also a lot cheaper.
  • If you can also find a place with a kitchen , you can prepare your own meals instead of eating out all the time.
  • Form a group with other travelers. This will allow you to reduce food and taxi costs.
  • Hit a supermarket or convenience store. A small bottled water at a restaurant can cost as much as AED 5. But you can find 1.5L of water at supermarkets for less than AED 2. Some convenience stores also sell cheap packed meals.

1. Zabeel Park

You could be forgiven for thinking that Dubai is all skyscrapers and six-lane highways, but just past the World Trade Centre roundabout is Zabeel Park , one of the city's largest green spaces. The landscaped park is home to barbecue areas and picnic tables, along with a bike track, a boating lake and a mini-train for kids. Zabeel Park costs Dhs5 ($1.40) to enter, and it's also home to the Ripe Market , held every Friday and Saturday from 9am to 7pm.

2. Careem bike share

In 2020, Dubai’s public transport authority unveiled a brand new fleet of nearly 800 pay-as-you-go bicycles , and it costs just Dhs20 ($5.45) for an unlimited number of 45-minute rides all day. Take in some of the city’s best views from the saddle, from the neon lights of Dubai Marina at night to the neck-aching sight of the Burj Khalifa .

Dubai now has 265 miles (425km) of cycling tracks across the city, with plans to expand to almost 400 miles (650km) of cycle paths by 2023. Ultimately, 3500 bicycles will be on the streets that can be docked at 350 solar-powered stations across the city as construction is completed over the next five years.

3. Dubai Fountain Floating Boardwalk

The dancing Dubai Fountain is spectacularly set in the middle of a giant lake against the backdrop of the glittering Burj Khalifa. Floating platforms added in 2017 will get you as close as 30 feet (9m) from the fountains , which can shoot water up to 460 feet (140m). Because of its popularity, it’s not always easy to snag a good spot to watch a Dubai Fountain performance, so the boardwalk will give a perfect front-row view for just Dhs20 ($5.45).

4. Spice Souq

Dubai Mall might be the biggest shopping center in the world, but it’s pretty pricey. Instead, head to Dubai Creek to shop in the traditional souqs (markets). Buy gold, frankincense or spices such as saffron and cinnamon on the Deira side, while over on the Bur Dubai bank, you can snap up pashminas and Arabian-style slippers. Remember to haggle hard for a bargain.

5. Abra ride

It lasts less than five minutes, but the most authentic and cheapest way to get across Dubai Creek is by riding an abra, a traditional wooden boat kitted out with a motor and a single bench seat in the middle. Once the abra is full, it whirrs across to the opposite side of the Creek, and you’ll pay the driver just Dhs1 (30 cents) en route.

6. Happy hour and ladies' nights

One way to stretch your drinking budget in Dubai, where alcohol duty is 50%, is by hitting up the happy hours offered by a wide roster of bars, from dives to five-star lounges, on specific days of the week. Discounts range from half-off drinks to two-for-one deals or double measures on selected beverages. Most start early in the evening, usually around 5pm or 6pm, and run for two or three hours.

Many bars and pubs go to extraordinary lengths to lure women with free cocktails, bubbly and nibbles. Some ladies' nights run all night; others only during certain hours. The most popular ladies' nights are Tuesdays and Wednesdays , with fewer deals on other nights and hardly any on the weekends.

7. Dubai Metro

Forget taxis and plump for the Dubai Metro instead. Dubai’s two-line driverless trains offer some of the cheapest public transport trips in the world. Buy a Nol card and top it up, from Dhs3 (80 cents) for a short hop to Dhs7.50 ($2) for a longer trip. The metro opens at 5.30am (10am on Fridays) and runs until midnight (1am on Thursdays and Fridays). You can even go VIP and travel Gold Class, which has free Wi-Fi.

8. Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is Dubai's largest mosque. Daily tours (except Fridays) take place at 10am for Dhs20 ($5.45), run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding . The tours last 75 minutes, and visitors are encouraged to ask any questions they might have about Islam and Emirati culture. Modest dress (ie covering knees and shoulders) is required inside the mosque.

9. Dubai Creek House and Perfume Museum

Step back in time to retrace history at the Dubai Creek House , part of the Al Shindagha Museum restoration project . The Birth of a Nation exhibit takes visitors on a journey through the emirate's trading history in a hands-on installation, and artifacts from the history of the United Arab Emirates are also on display. With your Dhs15 ($4) entry ticket, you’ll get access to the nearby Perfume House , the former home of a Dubai sheikha. The old building has been restored, and interactive exhibits detail all things scent, smells and fragrance .

10. Dubai Museum

Life in Dubai was wildly different 50 years ago. The city has grown from a small pearl-diving and trading community based around the Creek to what you see today in just four decades. Discover what Dubai was like for the Bedouin and Emiratis at the Dubai Museum in the Al Fahidi Fort, which charges the princely sum of Dhs3 (80 cents) for admission. Dubai Museum won’t win any awards for modernity, but it’s an interesting portrayal of a way of life that’s changed beyond recognition.

11. Crossroads of Civilizations Museum

The private Crossroads of Civilizations Museum in the Shindagha Historic District provides a fascinating glimpse of Dubai's historic role as a trading link between East and West. On display are hundreds of artifacts from the Ubaids, Greeks, Romans, Babylonians and other civilizations that passed through the region. Highlights include a 7500-year-old bull-shaped vase and a 16th-century Kaaba curtain, as well as a first edition of the 1590 book that first mentions "Dubai." Other galleries display swords, daggers and other historical weaponry used across the region. Entry costs Dhs30 (about $8).

Exterior of Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Museum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

12. Saruq Al Hadid Archaeology Museum

Only discovered in 2002, Saruq Al Hadid sits deep in the desert sands of the southern reaches of Dubai emirate and is believed to have been an iron-age metal factory in operation between 1300 and 800 BC. Excavations have thus far yielded mostly swords, axe heads, daggers and other weapons, some of which are on display in the modern Saruq Al Hadid Archaeology Museum . Entry costs Dhs20 ($5.45).

13. Women's Museum

Try on a burka, find out about Ousha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi (the most celebrated female poet in the UAE) and learn about the achievements of local women in the fields of science, trade, education, politics and literature at the region's first museum to train the spotlight on women. Conceived and financed by Emirati psychiatry professor Rafia Ghubash, the Women's Museum occupies three floors of a building called Bait Al Banat (House of the Girls), reportedly because it was the home of three unmarried sisters in the 1950s. Admission will set you back just Dhs20 ($5.45).

Exterior of the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

14. Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House

Recently restored as part of the Shindagha Historic District development, the grand Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House was the residence of Sheikh Saeed, the grandfather of current Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, from 1912 until his death in 1958. Today, the architectural marvel houses an excellent collection of pre–oil boom photographs of Dubai taken in the souqs, on Dubai Creek and at traditional celebrations. There are also some insightful private images of the ruling Al Maktoum clan. Other rooms feature coins, stamps and documents dating back as far as 1791. Admission costs Dhs3 (80 cents).

The original building dates back to 1896 and was enlarged and modernised several times. Sheikh Mohammed was born here in 1949 and spent the first ten years of his life romping around the three inner courtyards flanked by 30 rooms behind richly-ornamented teak doors and lorded over by four wind towers. Head upstairs to the majlis (reception room) to enjoy nice views of Dubai Creek.

Dubai Marina Water Bus at night

15. Dubai Marina Water Bus

For a scenic spin around the Dubai Marina, hop aboard the Water Bus , which shuttles between the Marina Walk, Marina Terrace, Marina Mall and Marina Promenade every 15 to 20 minutes. It's particularly glorious at sunset or after dark, as boats float past the show-stopping parade of shimmering towers. Nol Cards are valid, or a one-day pass costs Dhs25 ($6.80).

16. Majlis Ghorfat Um Al Sheef

Majlis Ghorfat Um Al Sheef , a rare vestige of pre-oil times, was built in 1955 as the summer retreat of Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the father of current ruler Sheikh Mohammed. The traditional two-story gypsum-and-coral structure sports a palm-frond roof, a wind tower and window shutters carved from East African timber. The rug-lined majlis (reception room) is decorated with rifles, daggers, coffee pots, radios and clocks and offers a glimpse into royal leisure living. The palm garden features a traditional falaj irrigation system. Admission costs Dhs3 (80 cents).

10 things to do on a budget in Dubai

Thu, October 13, 2022

Whether you're here on a stopover or travelling with family, check out these affordable things to see and do in the city.

Explore local souks

Woman trying gold bracelet at Gold Souk

Head to Deira to explore the city's traditional spice, textile and gold souks; soak up the atmosphere and fragrances, and get some great bargains. The gold in Dubai is of exceptional quality and value, and even if you’re not looking for something new, you can still simply window-shop. Although open every day, it is best to visit in the late afternoon when  the souks  are bustling with activity. Afterwards, head to the nearby banks of the Dubai Creek and cross its historic waters onboard a traditional abra boat.

Cost:  AED1 for the abra crossing. Free to wander the souks.

Learn about Islamic culture

Jumeirah mosque

You can explore one of the city’s largest mosques for just AED35. Take a guided tour of Jumeirah Mosque, hosted by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, and you’ll learn about Islamic culture and the region's history. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions on any topic as part of the centre's 'Open Doors, Open Minds' aim. Tours are held six days a week for non-Muslims (except Fridays), and take place in the mornings and afternoons. Remember that all visitors are required to dress modestly – long trousers or skirts, and long sleeves, with headscarves for women.

Cost:  AED35

  • Al Musalla Rd, Bur Dubai - Dubai

See sky-high views

Burj Khalifa

No trip to Dubai is complete without scaling the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, which is more than 828m high. If you book in advance, tickets to ‘At The Top’ – the building’s observation deck – start from under AED150 per person. Arguably one of the city's most popular attractions , there are seasonal deals and promotional discounts offered at certain times of the year too. Alternatively, you can still appreciate the scale of the tower by standing at the base and trying to capture it all in one photo.

Cost:  From AED149 for Burj Khalifa, At The Top

  • 1 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Blvd, Downtown Dubai

Travel through history

al-shindagha-2-dtcm

Located by the picturesque banks of the Dubai Creek, Al Shindagha Museum offers fascinating insights into the nation’s past. Step inside and discover 'Dubai Creek: Birth of a City', a multimedia-led tour that details the area’s development over the years with the help of interactive displays, historic photographs and priceless artifacts. Make sure to stop by the fantastic Perfume House next door, which puts the spotlight on  Arabian scents  and the role perfumery plays in Emirati society.

Cost:  AED50 for adults, AED20 for children

  • Al Shindagha, Dubai Creek area

Sample local treats

If you’re hungry, do as the locals do and head to 2nd of December Street for some  cheap eats . Formerly known as Al Dhiyafa Street (if your taxi driver is confused), this buzzing street is the place to load your plate with cuisines from India, Iran, Lebanon and more. You’ll find some of Dubai’s best chicken  shawarmas  at  Al Mallah , served in a bread pocket with salty pickles and garlic. Or turn into Al Satwa Street and find  Ravi Restaurant  for some fresh and delicious Pakistani food for less than AED30. Try the popular biryanis, but bring cash – most places don’t take cards.

Cost:  Around AED15 per person

  • 2 December Street

Uncover art gems

10-ways-to-do-dubai-on-a-budget-xva-6

Among the traditional wind towers and preserved buildings of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, you’ll find art galleries and courtyard cafés that feel like a world away from the ultra-modern city. Meander through the alleys to the peaceful  XVA cafe  for a light lunch, while being surrounded by works of local contemporary artists. Walk to the  Arabian Tea House   and choose from more than 100 teas, or marvel at the sculptures and art in Majlis Gallery. Al Fahidi is also home to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and the Coffee Museum.

Cost:  Free entry

  • Al Fahidi St, Al Souq Al Kabeer, Bur Dubai

Take a dip in the Gulf

10-ways-to-do-dubai-on-a-budget-beach-7

With year-round sunshine, miles of golden sand and a location nestled by the Arabian Gulf, Dubai is the perfect base for beach holidays. There are many public beaches  that offer free access for visitors and residents, such as  Kite Beach  that's dotted with hip cafes and food trucks by its shores. It is also the perfect beach at which to kitesurf and enjoy myriad watersports, with equipment and sun-loungers easily available to rent.

  • Umm Suqeim, just off Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai

Watch arthouse movies

Cinema Akil Dubai

Showcasing the best in independent cinema, Cinema Akil is a cultural gem. Starting life as a series of pop-up screenings across the UAE, it finally set up base at  Alserkal Avenue  in 2018, making Cinema Akil the region’s first permanent arthouse cinema. Today the venue screens the finest independent movies and festival favourites such as Ian Bonhôte’s documentary  McQueen , the Vincent Van Gogh biopic  At Eternity's Gate,  and Pawel Pawlikowski’s  Cold War . Open all through the year, it’s well worth a visit as tickets are very affordable. The on-site  Project Chaiwala  cafe serves up traditional  karak  chai  and Indian-inspired street food.

Cost: From AED50 per screening

  • Warehouse G59, Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz Industrial Area - Dubai

Catch dazzling aquatic displays

Dazzling aquatic

The dancing Dubai Fountain attracts thousands of visitors every day, as the choreographed water jets put on a dazzling display every 30 minutes from early evening. Although the fountain is free to visit, you can also grab a premium waterside view at many affordable casual dining restaurants dotted around  The Dubai Mall  and  Souk Al Bahar , combining dinner with a show. IMAGINE at Dubai Festival City Mall  is another  great aquatic production that should not be missed.

  • Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai, Dubai

Escape into the desert

Dune drive at Dubai Desert Safari

With Downtown Dubai now unrecognisable from its desert origins, a visit to the desert is always a good reminder to see how far this cosmopolitan city has come. If you’re short on time, opt for a  desert safari  with a 4WD dune-drive. Safaris vary in price, however affordable options are available and start from AED125 (US$34) with light snacks and shared transport included.

Cost:  From AED125 with Dubai Desert Safari

Best for families - jebel ali and the palm jumeirah.

Don’t let the fun stop at the end of the day – stay in a hotel that the kids will love to return to with one of these recommendations. They’re sure to make the children’s eyes widen in wonder. Only problem? They won’t want to go to bed!

Legoland Hotel

Anything with the word Lego attached to it will be a winner with the kids, and given the Legoland Hotel sits smack in the middle of the city’s entertainment and theme park precinct just adds to the excitement. Just as you would expect, there are awesome rooms and suites all with a Lego feel, themed dining and awesome activities for the whole family to enjoy as they stay and play. Knowing just how ‘brick-mad’ so many youngsters are, you’ll need to be prepared for an excitement overload, but trust me it’s worth it.

Atlantis, The Palm

Any hotel or resort with its own waterpark is a winner with holidaying families, and this entertainment wonderland doesn’t disappoint. Not only can Atlantis, The Palm lay claim to more than 100 water slides, it’s also home to one of the largest aquariums on the planet, offers its guests and off-site tourists sea lion and dolphin encounters, and as if that’s not enough, it also boasts a bowling alley and games arcade. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, at least you know the kids won’t be whining that they’re bored – if anything they won’t want to leave.

Lapita, Dubai Parks and Resorts

The only resort within Dubai’s popular parks and resorts precinct, Lapita exudes Polynesian vibes and is surrounded by Jebel Ali’s most popular attractions – Legoland, Motiongate and Bollywood Parks. Guests are afforded a free pass to the parks, which means flash mobs, roller coaster rides, water slide fun and entertaining stunt shows.

Best for the Budget Conscious: Deira / Al Barsha / Downtown

If you’re going to be out sightseeing all day long anyway, why pay more for a room you’ll only use at night? These stays offer a comfortable bed as well as a few other amenities, but still leave you with money to spend other places too.

Rove Downtown

Quirky and comfortable yet affordable, Rove Downtown is ideally situated within walking distance of Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa, and the Dancing Fountain. Rooms are on the small side and breakfast is more of an on-the-go experience than a sit-down affair, but the location is fabulous, the views good, and the team offers a round-trip airport shuttle. Design-wise it’s very cool, and it’s got a younger vibe. Basically if you’re going to be out all day sightseeing and just want a place to lay your head and a coffee in the morning before doing it all again, Rove is for you.

Hilton Garden Inn Al Muraqabat

A seven-minute drive from the city’s international airport, Hilton Garden Inn Al Muraqabat is situated in the thick of Old Dubai and just a few steps away from the Al Rigga Metro Station, which provides you access to the rest of the city. Connecting rooms are available as required, and the hotel has an all-day dining restaurant and a rooftop pool. Children under the age of 18 stay free if sharing a room with a paying adult, and Wi-Fi is free.

Ibis Dubai Al Barsha

Cozy, comfortable and modern, although a wee bit on the small side, Ibis Dubai Al Barsha is great value for the price tag. Although a fraction of the cost of other more luxurious accommodation in Dubai, the Ibis in Al Barsha has an all-day eatery, a cafe/bar, fitness center and offers parking. The nearest metro station is a five-minute walk away, so public transport options are good too.

Best Luxury Lodgings

Few places offer as many luxury accommodations as Dubai, so expect these recommendations to take luxury to a whole other level. We’re talking sensual spas, epic views, breathtaking interiors and more.

Burj Al Arab Jumeirah

This iconic five-star property is dripping with luxe appeal – you can even watch the fish swim around from your bed! This so-called ‘Jewel of Jumeirah’ stands 321m tall and boasts 202 suites along with nine signature restaurants, and aquariums where you would usually find walls and windows. Everything about this landmark sail-shaped hotel screams extravagance. From the gold-leaf laden throughout to the glamorous decor, and its indulgent spa, the Burj Al Arab is the epitome of Arabian luxury. Be prepared to pay through the roof though – a night at this diva of Dubai is on the high side, but it’s a bucket-lister for sure and so worth it for a special occasion.

Bulgari Resort Dubai

Standing proud in Jumeira Bay and just a hop, skip and a jump from Dubai’s ‘Golden Mile,’ this five-star resort serves up a Mediterranean village vibe. A unique development for the global brand, the property truly is an indulgent paradise. Not only are there 101 rooms and 20 pool villas to choose from, there is also a Yacht Club and Marina, a signature scent infused throughout the resort, and you can expect to enjoy some of the most comfortable furnishings, made in Italy, of course.

With sweeping views of the Gulf and some of the best city skyline vistas directly in front of you, this is the spot for some R&R, delectable food, and A-grade pampering.

Raffles The Palm

If you’re familiar with the Raffles brand, you’ll know that it’s all about next-level luxury. The Dubai iteration, Raffles The Palm , is all that and a lot more. Grandiose and lavish to a fault, this swanky seaside establishment that is set on 25 acres will please anyone with a penchant for the personalized service Raffles is renowned for.

You’ll no doubt lap up the 1,500-foot private beach and admire the opulent furnishings – we’re talking chandeliers, beautiful staircases, and quality furnishing – not to mention the five-star food and beverage offerings. From its position on the Western Crescent of The Palm, you would be forgiven for feeling like you’re a royal and this is your private palace.

It’s an exquisite place to celebrate a special occasion or simply spoil yourself.

Best for Cultural Immersion: Al Seef / Al Fahidi Cultural District / Madinat Jumeirah

When you want to feel like a local, or even a local living a hundred years ago, these recommendations are excellent places to stay. Often nestled in historic neighbourhoods, they appeal with traditional architecture and a vibrant atmosphere.

Al Seef Heritage Hotel

This hotel has a real sense of place about it, which is welcomed if you like to really feel like you’re in a completely different place when you travel. Everything about this heritage property is Arabesque in its appeal and it doesn’t hurt that it’s located in the bustling district of Al Seef, on the banks of the Dubai Creek.

This neighborhood is packed with winding alleyways, souk market stalls, and Emirati restaurants and cafes; in the evening it comes alive with dancing, singing, and contagious magical ‘Old Dubai’ feels. The 190-room Al Seef Heritage Hotel is within walking distance (temperature-allowing) of some of the old city attractions.

Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf

Known as the summer houses of Jumeirah, this Arabian-inspired resort is nestled within the popular Madinat Jumeirah complex. Considered one of the most intimate, exclusive offerings in the emirate, this 283-room property reflects the Arabian summer house of days gone by. Traditional features include wind towers, known locally as barjeels; majlis, or group sitting areas; and majestic courtyards.

Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf is just three minutes from the popular Jumeirah Beach and can be reached on foot or via an Abra, the traditional wooden boat.

XVA Art Hotel

XVA Art ‘s position within the Al Fahidi Historical District, the oldest neighborhood in Dubai, speaks volumes. With its roots dating back more than 100 years, in a country that is just 50 years old, it’s the Persian architectural heritage and design focus that set this property apart from any other in this historic part of the city. The fact that it was once occupied by one of the UAE’s most prominent families adds to the appeal.

Best for Desert Vibes

Striving for Laurence of Arabia vibes? Then a stay in the desert is the only way to do it. Enjoy sunsets over rolling dunes, camel rides and unforgettable star-gazing opportunities.

Bab Al Shams

Camelback rides, falconry displays and photo opportunities – not to mention desert sunsets and even a mini-golf course – Bab Al Shams is all about cultural immersion. Whether traveling as a family or after a more intimate experience, this purpose-built heritage-focussed resort is a nomadic reminder of days passed. Embrace the shifting sands and enjoy some time outside of the city limits, acknowledging how far this relatively young nation has come.

Al Maha Luxury Collection Dubai

Set within the expansive Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, Al Maha is a desert haven that is surrounded by rolling dunes and frequented by four-legged locals, like camels, oryx and gazelles. A 45-minute journey from Dubai, you can choose to simply kick back and relax, or make the most of every moment in this unique landscape and join a horse-riding tour, camel trek, dune walk or a drink among the sand dunes.

Best for Pool Vibes: Downtown

When your idea of a holiday is hanging by the pool, you simply must choose one of these accommodations. These pools offer epic views over the city, infinity edges, sun loungers and more. You’ll never want to leave.

Address Sky Views

A relatively new addition to the Dubai hotel scene, this property ’s breathtaking infinity pool really does take the cake for the best in the emirate. Guests can lay out or dip in and enjoy some of the best vistas of the city’s incredible skyline. Located on the SkyDeck, there are private cabanas, a pool bar and sun loungers, and it’s open to hotel guests from 9am to 7pm daily. This is one Instagram shot you can’t miss – believe me, you’ll generate some serious FOMO.

St Regis Hotel - The Palm

Positioned within The Palm Tower, St Regis Dubai occupies the same building as Aura SkyPool – the world’s highest 360-degree infinity pool. It’s suspended 200m in the air on the 52nd story of the skyscraper that is connected to Nakheel Mall. Taking up residence on the first 18 floors of The Palm Tower, St Regis boasts 264 rooms and 26 suites, but it really is the spectacular pool and views that make it a winner with hotel guests and external tourists.

Unique stay: Queen Elizabeth 2

This much-loved Cunard cruise liner can lay claim to being the only floating hotel in the emirate. Docked permanently at Port Rashid, this standout offering provides guests not only with a choice of 447 rooms and suites, but also a selection of international food and beverage offerings, a gym, indoor pool, and a licensed theater. Just a couple of minutes from the beach, Downtown Dubai and the nearest metro station, this landmark accommodation option is as unique as they come.
