What a concert!!! From the early Poco days, his time with Loggins, etc...Jim Messina was awesome! His band was tight - such musicians on our stage! Didn't last long enough. :) Was nice he met with fans in the lobby after, giving autographs and taking pics with fans.

Side note - It was very embarrassing to see such a small turnout. Due to poor publicity perhaps? Too bad - they missed a helluva show!

Excellent concert, superb multi-instrumental musicians, a really tight band that rocks and jams. Messina plays all of his best known songs and he is also an outstanding guitarist and is still in very good voice. A concert that is definitely worth seeing.

If the term ‘musical chameleon’ applies to anyone, it’s Jim Messina.

—Providence Journal

An expert in the fine art of creating hit songs, Jim Messina’s legacy spans six decades, three supergroups, a vibrant solo career, and scores of producing and engineering credits.

Messina was first linked to Buffalo Springfield, producing and engineering for the band before joining as a bass player. When Buffalo Springfield disbanded in 1968, Messina and Richie Furay formed Poco, one of the first and longest-lasting country-rock groups.

In November 1970, Messina was asked to work with a then-unknown Kenny Loggins. Over the next seven years, Loggins and Messina released eight hit records, charted 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and sold more than 16 million albums. After Loggins and Messina’s partnership dissolved, Messina embarked on a solo career.

Messina’s touring band comprises acclaimed musicians who have played with him at various points in his career, and they perform hits from across Messina’s vaunted career.

Jim Messina talks hits, Loggins and tour headed here

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The script flipped a long time ago. Now, when evenings come around and it's time to go to town, mamas DO dance and daddies DO rock and roll.

But that never diluted the rebellious fun of Loggins and Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance," that beloved early 1970s ode to teenagers eager to stay out late on a date.

Jim Messina will perform that hit, his other co-written gems with Kenny Loggins, songs from his days with trailblazing country-rock band Poco and smart, breezy solo singles when he entertains March 28 at The Oaks Theater in Oakmont. Tickets are $45 to $90 at oakstheater.com

After a Midwest swing, the tour heads east and includes dates like April 12 at the Count Basie Center for The Arts in Red Bank, N.J.; April 13 at Musikfest Café i n Bethlehem, Pa.; April 14 at Suffolk Theater in Riverhead, N.Y. ; April 15 at the Newton Theatre in Newton, N.J.; April 16 at Levoy Theatre in Millville, N.J.; April 19 at Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, N.H.; April 20 at Infinity Hall, Hartford; April 21 at Paramount Hudson Valley Theater in Peekskill, N.Y.; and April 22 at Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Del.

"It'll be pretty much my songs, including 'Mexican Minutes' that I wrote and Brooks & Dunn recorded," Messina said. "That's a fun song about getting out of your everyday hustle and bustle and heading south of the border to enjoy tequila and chips. And I'll play 'She's Gotta Rock,' that's another fun one. And, of course the important songs fans grew up with, several in the acoustic set, like 'Thinking of You,' 'House at Pooh Corner,' and 'Danny's Song.' Then I'll introduce more of the country songs like 'You Better Think Twice' and 'Listen to a Country Song' which Lynne Anderson recorded, and 'Holiday Hotel.'"

Fans will recognize Loggins & Messina vinyl cut "Watching The River Run," which Messina said also turns up in the acoustic set.

His five-piece Nashville band features Jack Bruno, who's drummed for Tina Turner and Joe Cocker; Steve Nieves on saxophone and woodwinds; Jim Frazier on keyboard and Guitar; and Ben King on bass.

"I like our music to be exciting but not too loud," Messina said,

His road to fame began as a recording engineer in Los Angeles. Driving home after a long night of work, he flicked on the radio and found himself mesmerized by a song called "Bluebird."

"I thought wow that's really good. It resonated with me as a musician and as a person."

Months later, he was stoked to discover his next recording project for Atlantic Records was the band that recorded "Bluebird," the influential fok-rock group Buffalo Springfield. Amid recording, Messina replaced Bruce Palmer as Buffalo Springfield's permanent bassist, also adding vocals on a few tracks for what would become the group's last studio release. Messina toured with Buffalo Springfield until the group disbanded in 1968.

What busted up the band?

"You'll have to ask (bandmates) Stephen Stills and Neil Young," Messina said.

He and fellow Buffalo Springfield member Richie Furay rebounded nicely by forming Poco (originally named“Pogo” after the famous comic strip character). Poco's appropriately titled 1969 debut "Pickin’ Up The Pieces" is the only rookie album ever to receive a perfect rating from Rolling Stone magazine, boasts Messina's bio, and remains widely lauded as a seminal country-rock release, carving a path for future mega-selling band The Eagles.

Fans of 1970s music debate to this day if Poco got the full credit it deserves.

"I think we got our due," Messina said. "We did what we did, and audiences loved to come see us and we sold out everything."

He ended up on the cover of Rolling Stone several years later after mentoring a young songwriter named Kenny Loggins.

They met in 1970, with Messina initially skeptical if Loggins had the essentials to succeed.

Loggins was a folk singer; Messina felt the music industry had gravitated more toward the soulful rock led by artists like Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Dave Mason and Delaney & Bonnie.

"Kenny was a project. There were a lot of creative challenges," Messina recalled in a March 3 phone interview. "He hadn't worked with anyone like that before. He had never played in a band, but there was something there I wanted to record. I wanted to see how well he could play."

He recalled their initial meetup, arranged by Columbia Records, starting out something like this:

Messina: Where's your band?

Loggins: I don't have one.

Messina: Well, grab your best guitar.

Loggins: I don't own one.

"I thought really ... are you guys putting me on?" Messina recalled.

Messina handed Loggins a Nylon stringed guitar.

"I had a tape recorder, I pressed the record button and said 'Lay it down.' And out came 'Danny's Song' and 'House on Pooh Corner.'"

Both were future classics.

"I mean, he had his hair parted funnily on one side, braces on his teeth, was kind of lanky. I still needed to think about it," Messina said. "My wife said, 'Well what did you think?' I said I liked the sound of his voice and though the songs he sang weren't rock, they weren't bad. There was potential."

More: We're talking with Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison who's on tour with Adrian Belew

He decided to record Loggins.

"If I was going to be a successful producer I needed an artist I could record who was diversified, and he was willing to work, he was playful, he enjoyed singing immensely and he was open to trying different kinds of music."

Messina convinced Columbia president Clive Davis to let him sit in with Loggins as jazz artists had done with proteges in the past.

That spawned the title of their November 1971 debut "Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In" featuring "Danny's Song" and a "House at Pooh Corner" given baroque touches by Messina.

The duo found instant success, going on to sell 16 million albums in the next six years, amassing 16 million in sales.

There'd be the fiery "Angry Eyes," an FM radio hit that originated from a soundtrack score Messina was working on, where he needed an ominous sound coinciding with the film's outlaws rolling into town.

Loggins and Messina's biggest hit would be "Your Mama Don't Dance," a song about freedom-craving young adults clashing with over-protective parents and other authority figures.

It's a literary subject that dates as far back as Socrates and Plato, Messina said.

"But we managed to capture it in a way that resonated with a lot of people," he said.

Messina could relate from experience.

"My stepfather was very strict, always telling me I couldn't do this, or I couldn't do that," he said. "My mother stood up for me if there was a dance I wanted to go to from 8-11 p.m., and my stepfather didn't want me out past 10. I'd want to be home at midnight. That's a tough negotiation. It's tough being a teenager dealing with parents who don't trust you."

Did his stepdad grow to appreciate "Your Mama Don't Dance"?

"Eventually," Messina said.

More: Crash Test Dummies singer tells us what's new

As demonstrated with his most recent album, 2016's "In the Groove," a live album featuring the late Rusty Young of his Poco, Messina brings an easygoing storytelling style to the stage.

"I'll do a little bit of that on this tour," he said. "I hate to talk too much in the set, but I know people enjoy hearing a few stories. The acoustic part of the show is more casual."

Aggies Coach Jim Schlossnagle Comments on Alleged Georgia Pitching Scandal

A viral video revealing what could be the use of a banned substance by Georgia Bulldogs pitcher Christian Mracna caused some controversy amidst Texas A&M Aggies fans.

  • Author: Matt Guzman

In this story:

Hunched over in the corner of the Texas A&M Aggies ' visiting bullpen, Georgia Bulldogs closing-pitcher Christian Mracna wasn't slick about his secretive actions ... and his hands might not have been either.

In a since-viral video posted to X, formerly Twitter, Mracna is seen messing with his glove in the bullpen prior to making his entrance for the final two innings of what turned out to be a 5-4 victory for the Bulldogs. While it's unclear what was transpiring, the video certainly seemed suspicious.

Coach Jim Schlossnagle seemed to agree, making a simple statement on the matter when asked.

Interesting 🤔 pic.twitter.com/eyHaiAZYzs — Barstool Texas A&M (@BarstoolTexasAM) April 28, 2024

“Certainly appears that way,” Schlossnagle said, responding to a question about his knowledge of Mracna's use of a sticky substance in a text to The Associated Press. “It's part of the game ... wish we would've caught it.”

While admitting that the use of banned substances is a part of the game isn't exactly a great look for the Aggies — or college baseball, for that matter — Texas A&M hasn't been accused of it this season.

Georgia, on the other hand, may have to excercise caution, as their pitching will certainly be under close watch from here on out.

The Bulldogs ended up winning the contest, though it was the second half of a doubleheader in which the first saw a 19-9 mercy-rule beatdown from the Aggies, so it could be argued that Mracna's antics might have given the Bulldogs the edge, but as Schlossnagle said, it's part of the game.

The Aggies still stand at No. 1 in the country, while Georgia — having lost the overall series in College Station — sits 18 spots behind at No. 19. Safe to say, Texas A&M won't be losing sleep over the video.

Next up for the Aggies is a trip to Baton Rouge for a three-game series against the LSU Tigers. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.

Jim Furyk, caddie Mike 'Fluff' Cowan part amicably after 25 years as Fluff takes permanent bag on PGA Tour

M cKINNEY, Texas – For the last 25 years, Jim Furyk and Mike “Fluff” Cowan have gone together like Forrest Gump and a box of chocolates. But all good things must come to an end. Fluff has a new steady bag, working at this week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson for C.T. Pan.

“It’s hard to part ways after 25 years,” Cowan said. “Sometimes the right thing to do is staring you right in the face and you’ve got to have the guts to do it.”

But to hear Fluff tell it, Furyk had to threaten to fire him — "Don't make me do it because I will," he joked — before Fluff would officially end what has been one of the game's endearing partnerships of more than two decades dating to the 1999 Masters. It might be one of the few cases where a player and caddie truly split amicably.

C.T. Pan and Mike "Fluff" Cowan on the seventh the at the CJ CUP (Adam Schupak/Golfweek)

“Love the guy,” Furyk wrote in a text while fishing with his father in South Carolina. “I’m still struggling with injuries and I pushed him to work for C.T. full time.”

The reason was a simple case of economics. Furyk, who has been dealing with injuries that sidelined him for much of last season, is 53 and has been able to make only limited starts on PGA Tour Champions.

“We play for $2 million. They play for $8-, $20-, $25-million,” Furyk said. “I knew it was a good opportunity for him, and C.T. has been playing pretty good (T-3 at the Mexico Open being his best result). (Fluff) was hesitant. Because he’s a great person at heart. But I pushed and we both knew it was best for him and his family.”

Fluff hooked up with Pan earlier this season in Hawaii and this week marks their ninth event together. Pan has banked $674,187 so far this season. Fluff worked for Furyk at two senior events, most recently at the Galleri Classic in late March. Furyk has earned $19,464 this season and hasn’t finished better than T-33.

Furyk, who had a friend from his junior golf days in Pennsylvania on his bag at the Invited Celebrity Classic two weeks ago in Dallas, said he expects to play next week at the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, a Champions tour major. Who is going to caddie for him? His son, Tanner, a sophomore lacrosse player at Sewanee, is scheduled to work for his old man at 3-4 upcoming tournaments.

MORE FLUFF: Everybody loves Fluff, golf's most famous caddie

On Wednesday, Fluff and his trademark fluffy, walrus mustache were as popular as ever. Fans, calling him “Mr. Fluff,” asked for his autograph and he obliged. At the tee of the sixth hole, a short par 4, Pan pulled a fairway wood and Fluff told him that there was an argument to be made for hitting the big stick but he loved the play for him. After the shot, a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, the host organization that runs the annual Tour stop here, came over and hugged Fluff. It was Matt Weibring, son of D.A. Weibring, who turned pro in 1975 a year before Fluff showed up in a Tour parking lot looking for a bag. The iron man of golf caddies says he's planning to caddie for at least one more year; that is until his daughter, who is wrapping up her junior year at Clemson University, graduates. “I’ve got one more year of payments,” he said with a sigh. A hole later, during a backup on the par-3 seventh, Pan met a couple of young girls from Momentous Institute, the tournament’s main charity. Pan introduced Angela, 10, to Fluff and said if she could guess how old he was he’d sign a glove to her.

“Sixty-seven,” she said with a smile.

“You’re sweet,” said Fluff, whispering in her ear the correct age of 76.

“I came out for one summer 47 years ago,” he said. “It’s been a very long summer.”

The endless summer continues, just with a new boss.

Jim Furyk, caddie Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan split amicably after 25 years

Change Text Size

One of golf’s longest-running teams has signed off.

Jim Furyk and caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan have officially split, Golfweek reported Thursday. The duo first started working together at the 1999 Masters, with highlight moments including the 2003 U.S. Open title and a PGA TOUR-record 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Cowan, 76, now caddies full-time for PGA TOUR pro C.T. Pan. Cowan and Pan began working together at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii; THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson marks their ninth event together. Furyk, 53, encouraged his longtime looper to work for Pan full-time, he told Golfweek. Cowan initially hesitated but eventually obliged.

“Love the guy,” Furyk texted Golfweek. “I’m still struggling with injuries and I pushed him to work for C.T. full time … (Fluff) was hesitant. Because he’s a great person at heart. But I pushed and we both knew it was best for him and his family.”

Jim Furyk talks about "Fluff" before Travelers

“He’s pretty amazing,” Furyk said in 2019. “He loves what he does for a living. He likes coming to work. Everyone likes Mike, and he never changes. Whether I'm shooting 80 or shooting 65, he was the same person on the bag, and you can't ask for any more than that.”

Cowan’s storied career has also included stints with Tiger Woods, Fred Couples and Peter Jacobsen. The Maine native, who was an assistant golf professional in Maine before becoming a caddie, was inducted into the Maine Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.

Peter Jacobsen and Mike “Fluff” Cowan reminisce on final walk together at Pebble Beach

Furyk, a 17-time TOUR winner, now plays mostly on PGA TOUR Champions, although he has made just three starts in 2024 due to injuries. Furyk also hosts the Champions Tour’s Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS each October in his adopted hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.

“It’s hard to part ways after 25 years,” Cowan told Golfweek. “Sometimes the right thing to do is staring you right in the face and you’ve got to have the guts to do it.”

After striping a 7-iron on the 72nd hole to clinch the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields, Furyk waited for Cowan so the two could share the walk to the green, basking in the well-earned glory. The duo hugged after Furyk putted out for a three-stroke win in Chicagoland. Tears welled in the eyes of both Furyk and his caddie, amidst a shared dream.

Earlier this year, Cowan was asked about the key to happiness. He paused for a few seconds before offering a simple yet profound response.

“Doing what you enjoy,” he said. “Pretty simple as that in my mind. Money is a wonderful sidelight, but money is not what makes you happy. You have to do things that you enjoy, and let the bad times roll off your back. Just continue to continue. Just keep on keeping on.”

Jim Messina 2022

Jim Messina, November 10, 2022 Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center

Jim Messina and his band gave a stellar performance for a sold-out crowd on Thursday November 10th at the Katharine Hepburn Theater.

This was like the newly reborn version of Jim Messina. He has changed up some of the bandmates and this performance was the first I had seen with Steve Nieves on wind/percussion and saxophone, Jack Bruno on drums, James Frazier on keyboards, and bassist Ben King. This combination worked so well and meshed perfectly. The entire night seemed more energized as Messina and his bandmates were in top form.

Messina looked very happy with the set and the entire band seemed like they were having a great time together. There was obvious chemistry between them all. All of the songs were tight and the vocal harmonies were spot on. The band clicked and seamlessly as they moved from one song to the next. The assortment of songs ranged from Messina’s time with Poco on to his time with Loggins and Messina. He also had his solo songs in the set. This arrangement gave the audience a set that everyone could enjoy. It was a taste of everything a Jim Messina fan would want to hear. Messina included a tribute to the late Rusty Young by singing “Kind Woman.”

The Kate being a smaller venue than some always gives the audience a very intimate and close up performance. Messina took it to another level as he interacted with the audience as an audience member would occasionally speak out and say something to him, he always smiled and answered back.

Messina told the crowd that a song he was going to sing was about dancing Faires and spirits dancing around a tiny fire he once saw at a retreat. While he was telling the story Tim Creek, the guitar tech, brought out a tiny violin and Messina showed it to the audience. He said the little instrument is the type they use to entrap you by playing. He and the band then launch into “Whispering Waters.'”

Having arrived before the performance and having permission to watch the sound check was an extra bonus. I watched the time Messina takes prior to each show to make sure the sound was right and would give the audience the best sound possible for each performance. He is a true perfectionist when it comes to making sure every show is first class and give the audience a memorable experience.

There was more than one standing ovation for the band and the exceptional performance they gave. It’s always great so see Messina’s name come up on The Kate’s lineup of upcoming acts and a must see when he does schedule a show there.

Messina held a question and answer session for those in the audience who wished to stay after the show and share more time with him.

All-out brawl at bad bunny concert in texas, bad bunny screw the concert, we're brawling female fans in wild fight.

Some women who love Bad Bunny also love beating the hell out of each other ... as a few vicious fights erupted at his Saturday night concert, momentarily stealing the show.

Bunny was oblivious to the violence as he performed at the American Airlines Center in Dallas -- but the fists were flying as several female fans pummeled each other like they were playing Street Fighter.

Check out the wild video ... 2 not-so-gentlewomen each grabbed handfuls of the other's hair as one of them managed to fire off an absolute flurry of punches. If it was a UFC fight, the ref would've ended it, the beatdown was that brutal.

Meanwhile, right behind them, 2 other women were attacking -- one of them knocking the other backward over the seats while punching her, and several men tried their best to break it up.

Throughout the ordeal, Bunny kept singing -- the fighting was too far from the stage for him to see -- but the fans in this section definitely had their attention split ... between Bunny and the brawl.

By the way ... the person shooting the footage mentioned this was the second battle royale of the evening. If this was the rematch, gotta wonder how savage the opening fight was.

It's unclear if anyone was arrested or required medical treatment ... but it looks like at least 2 women in the crowd will be sporting black eyes today.
