Square One gets Christmas donation, kids get visit from Santa (photos)

SPRINGFIELD — Square One, the Springfield-based early childhood education private non-profit organization, had a good day Thursday.

Santa handed out candy canes, and Fallon Health Care representatives showed up with a check for $2,500 to add to their fund for gifts to children and families. Now, with a combined $5,000-plus in donations and donated gifts from individuals, all of the 900 children in their five area facilities and 40 home-based care centers will receive Christmas gifts.

Kyocera Corp. gave Square One $1,000. Most of the smaller donations and gifts came from individual donors. Square One sponsors "adopted" families, and there will be gifts for all of them, as well.

Square One education and care centers are in Springfield, West Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke.

The visiting Santa Claus got a warm welcome when he stopped into the Square One classrooms at the Early Childhood Education Center in Springfield. He also visited the classrooms there of the Springfield Public Schools, the YMCA and Head Start.

Visiting A Mall Santa for the First Time

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by SantaHQ and HGTV. All opinions and experiences are my own.

visit with santa square one

Nothing starts off the holiday season like a trip to the mall to see Santa himself! From the day after Thanksgiving right up to Christmas Eve, Santa can be found in many places. Finding the RIGHT Santa is not an easy mission, but I think we may have found where he’s been hiding out! Yesterday we took a trip to Queens Center Mall with my little guy. He’s been asking to see Santa since our visit to the North Pole via the magical train ride a few weeks ago. I knew a special trip where he can have his own one-on-one time without his older sisters stealing the limelight would brighten his day – or would it?

visit with santa square one

It was finally our turn to see Santa. I stood back as I watched that magical moment of my son interacting with the big guy himself, but that never happened. I guess the excitement was too much, or maybe he needed his sisters to help him feel comfortable, but a picture with Santa was not happening. I sat with him as Santa tried his best to make him feel comfortable and gave him a fun coloring book to celebrate his first solo visit to Santa, but it wasn’t happening. Santa was a good sport, reminding him to always be on his best behavior and listen to mommy and daddy, but my little man was done at that point.

The staff never made us feel rushed, even though I started to feel flustered at one point, and Santa did his best make us feel comfortable. After such a positive experience at SantaHQ, I’m looking forward to coming back with the entire family to get all three kids in a picture together with Santa.

You can find out more about , as well as locating one near you, by visiting the link. My favorite feature is the ability to make – which is a must when you have small kids!

When to Visit Spain

The allure of Spain beckons throughout the year, but the best times to visit depend on your preferences. Spring, from around March to May, is a great shoulder season choice, as the countryside bursts into a kaleidoscope of wildflowers, and temperatures hover in the comfortable mid-60s to mid-70s. This season also allows you to explore historic cities like Barcelona and Seville without the intense summer crowds.

The summer months of June to August present the classic sun-soaked Spanish experience, with coastal regions, such as Costa del Sol, boasting blue skies and inviting beaches. Autumn, from September to November, offers a milder climate, making it an ideal time for cultural pursuits in Madrid or hiking the scenic trails of the Pyrenees. For a taste of Spanish winter charm, December to February sees festive lights adorning city streets, and skiing enthusiasts can hit the slopes in the Sierra Nevada.

Flights to Spain

One of the most popular countries in the world to visit, Spain was drawing more than 70 million visitors per year prior to the pandemic. Flights from anywhere in the U.S. to major city hubs like Madrid and Barcelona are plentiful, but those seeking more affordable options should consider an off-peak trip—essentially any time of year besides summer.

A winter trip, between November and February, will yield the cheapest flights, though you will likely have to forgo any beachside stints. Good flight deals are still to be found for shoulder season travel, in late spring from April to May, and early autumn from September to October, and will yield milder weather and relatively light crowds.

Holiday Traditions at Union Square in San Francisco

December 7, 2023

visit with santa square one

Some of my most cherished childhood holiday memories are of my parents packing us into the car and driving on a December day to San Francisco's Union Square. Seeing the giant Christmas tree and the holiday windows at Macy's and other department stores, marveling at the opulent lobby of the Westin St. Francis hotel, and watching decorated cable cars climb up to Nob Hill, visting with Santa, and the general holiday hustle and bustle really made Union Square feel a world away from everyday life.

Union Square is still San Francisco's holiday epicenter and now, as a parent, it's fun to re-create these holiday memories with my own kids. There's a lot to do and see and of course you can get your Christmas shopping done, too. Here's what you shouldn't miss at Union Square this holiday season.

Union Square Christmas tree and Macy's

Christmas Trees and Ice Skating

The holiday centerpiece of Union Square is the 83-foot-tall Macy's Great Christmas tree. Gifted to the city by Macy's, this giant tree is decorated with tens of thousands of twinkling LED lights. It's especially spectacular after dark! Across the street at Neiman Marcus, the 80-foot "tree of lights" in their rotunda is also a spectacular sight.

visit with santa square one

Right below the tree you'll find the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink , an annual Union Square tradition where you join on on fun and festive outdoor ice skating. Skating costs $20 for adults and $15 for children 8 and under, which includes skate rental. Skate helpers, for those unsteady on the ice, are also available to rent and skating lessons are available on weekend mornings. It's open through January 15, 2024. Learn more at unionsquareicerink.com .

Holiday Happenings at the Westin St. Francis

One of San Francisco's iconic and historic hotels, the Westin St. Francis sits on Powell Street right across from Union Square. It's a holiday season must-visit for a number of different reasons, from its amazing sugar castle in its lobby to fun and festive holiday events.

Westin St. Francis sugar castle christmas

Created by the hotel's executive pastry chef Jean-François Houdre, the St. Francis's amazing holiday sugar castle has to be seen to be believed. Constructed from sugar and royal icing and encircled by toy trains, this masterpiece grows larger and more elaborate every year. The Westin St. Francis also offers holiday events including a Breakfast with Santa overlooking the San Francisco skyline (December 9 and 10) and a magical holiday tea party for children and their dolls (December 16 and 17).

We booked a room at the Westin St. Francis to stay over so we could continue exploring and shopping the next day. We opted to stay in one of the historic rooms in the old 1904 section of the hotel and we could really feel the history all around us. It was the perfect home base for exploring the area, and our room was elegant, comfortable, and the perfect place to relax when we had enough of the holiday bustle outside.

The Powell/Hyde and Powell/Mason Cable Car lines run right by the front of the hotel, so it's easy to hop on a car and go for a ride. Many of the cable cars are decorated for the holidays, so it's a fun and festive trip your family won't forget and an iconic San Francisco experience!

You can hop off the cable car on Nob Hill at California Street and visit the Fairmont to see its life-size holiday gingerbread house or attend one of the Christmas concerts at Grace Cathedral , or continue your trip through North Beach or Russian Hill all the way to Fisherman's Wharf.

Shopping and a Visit with Santa

Union Square is San Francisco's main shopping district, so it's a natural destination during the holidays. You'll find traditional flagship department stores like Macy's and Neiman Marcus as well as countless other retailers around the square and its surrounding streets.

Of course a trip downtown during the holidays isn't complete without a visit with Santa , and you'll find him working in his office in Santa's Workshop on the store's sixth floor. Photo sessions with Santa at Macy's are free, but advance reservations are required . Santa is available for photos through Christmas Eve, December 24. Make your reservation online at www.macys.com/s/holiday-celebrations/sanfrancisco .

Another tradition are Macy's holiday windows , which feature adorable and adoptable pets from the San Francisco SPCA. The windows are located on the Stockton Street and O'Farrell Street sides of the building and are definitely not to be missed. Pets will be on view in the holiday windows Thursdays through Sundays from noon to 5 pm.

Union Square is located in downtown San Francisco at Post and Geary and Powell and Stockton Streets. It's easily accessible by driving or public transportation. Parking is available at the Union Square Garage (entrances on Post and Geary) and the Sutter Stockton Garage.

The Macy's Great Tree will be on view until January 1, 2024 and the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink is open through January 15, 2024.

Six Places to Visit Santa in Portland This Christmas

Santa in Portland

Christmas is nearly here and that means Santa Claus is coming to town. Visiting Santa can be much more fun than standing in a long line at the mall for a quick, low-quality snapshot. We’ve got the six best places to see Santa in Portland before he takes off on Christmas Eve.

#1. HGTV’s Santa HQ at Washington Square

Santa HQ, presented by HGTV, is the mall Santa experience—but better. If you’re looking for a quick visit to see Santa in Portland, this is an experience you don’t want to miss. Kids can see how they measure up on the Naughty-or-Nice O’ Meter, download the Elf-Ray Vision app to see what’s going on in Santa’s workshop, and of course, get their picture taken with Santa. Santa HQ has online registration here , which is super handy for cutting out long wait times. And of course, the decorations are gorgeous. (What else would you expect from HGTV?)

Where: Washington Square, 9585 SW Washington Square Rd

Hours: December 9–23: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; December 24: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

How to Give: The Sharing Tree by Santa HQ is decorated with ornaments labeled with specific gifts for children in the community. Choose an ornament, purchase the gift, and return it (unwrapped) by December 20.

More Information: Washington Square Events

#2. The Holiday Express

There’s something magical about trains at Christmastime. The Holiday Express at Oaks Park Station brings vintage Christmas to life and is a unique way to visit Santa in Portland. The Oregon Pacific Railway boards passengers on a steam locomotive and takes you on a ride through the forest along the Willamette River. The train cars are decked out in full Christmas décor. And no holiday train ride would be complete without cookies and hot chocolate! Tickets sell out fast, so don’t wait to plan your train ride.

Where: The Oaks Station, 7806 SE Oaks Park Way

Hours: Saturdays and Sundays in December. Ride times start at 10 a.m. and end at 8 p.m.

How to Give: Text “Rail” to 52000 to make a $10 donation the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation

More Information: The Holiday Express

#3. Christmas in Dairyville

Dairyville at Alpenrose Dairy has more than just a visit with Santa. Dairyville is a replica of an old-west town with storefronts that have window displays and porches, an opera house, and even a storybook lane. Choirs from local organizations bring Christmas cheer, and kids will love seeing the animals on display. The opera house also shows Christmas movies and is hosting a Ralph Radio Theatre performance this year. If you’re on the hunt for a fun family experience while you see Santa in Portland, Christmas in Dairyville is a must!

Where: Alpenrose Dairy, 6149 SW Shattuck Rd

Hours: December 1–3, 8–10, 15–17: 10 a.m. to 6 pm; December 22 and 23: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ways to Give: Pick up a tag at Dairyville and donate an unwrapped gift to help children in need.

More Information: Alpenrose Dairy

#4. Sensory Santa in Portland at the Lloyd Center

The Lloyd Center has brought an amazing service to the Portland community by offering a sensory Santa. Many children diagnosed with autism would love to see Santa, but a busy mall with loud music and distracting lights can make this a negative experience for them. The Lloyd Center offers an after-hours time for children to see Santa without large crowds. The music is soft, the lights are dim, and the elves are given instructions to make smaller movements. Sensory Santa is only open for one evening, usually in November (so make a note for next year). Santa is open to the rest of the public for the remainder of the holiday season. After visiting with Santa, you can skate around the indoor ice rink where indoor snow falls every afternoon.

Where: Lloyd Center, 2201 Lloyd Center

Hours: November 24–December 24, Hours Vary

Ways to Give: Make a donation to your local autism foundation. A Hope for Autism , located in Portland, is in need of tablets and laptops right now.

More Information: Lloyd Center

#5. The Miracle of a Million Lights at Victorian Belle

This historic home is a beautiful place to see Santa in Portland. The home and grounds are decked out in over a million lights. There are also over twenty decorated trees throughout the home. Crafts, chocolate-dipped bacon, and a mini petting zoo with bunnies and turtles make this outing fun! Pictures with Santa are done by a professional photographer, so make sure you dress in your Christmas best if you’re looking for a keepsake. You can end the night by making s’mores with Rudolph outside by the fire.

Where: Victorian Belle, 1441 N McClellan Street

Hours: December 9–23, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Ways to Give: Bring a non-perishable food item for $1 off admission

More Information: Victorian Belle

#6. Hipster Santa at Pioneer Place

If you’re looking for a truly Portland experience, you’ve got to see Hipster Santa. This Santa ditched the big red coat and hat for a Pendleton sweater and a man bun. While your kids might not recognize this Santa with his naughty and nice tattoos on both arms, you’re sure to have a good conversation about your Christmas menu (if it includes a free-range turkey dinner and vegan cupcakes for dessert). If Hipster Santa isn’t quite up your alley, Pioneer Place also has a traditional Santa. Both are ready to pose for photos and listen to Christmas wishes.

Where: Pioneer Place, 700 SW Fifth Ave

Hours: See hours  here

Ways to Give: Support local artisans and shop local at Made in Oregon , located at Pioneer Place.

Our beautiful Oregon has so much to offer during the holidays! Pack the family in the car, go visit Santa in Portland, and tell him hello from all of us at Farrell Realty. Hopefully we’re still on the nice list and you are, too!
