Joshua Bell brings life or death virtuosity to the Sydney Opera House

With the academy of st martin in the fields.

Fireworks are guaranteed when the Academy of St Martin in the Fields meets the thrilling vitality of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Bach and more in three exciting programmes led by the Academy’s Music Director, Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, as part of the Sydney Opera House’s 50th Birthday Festival.

Bell has often described playing music as ‘life or death’ – and you can hear that energy and intensity every time he picks up his violin. When the American violinist was last in Sydney, touring with the Academy in 2017, their performances were dubbed ‘breathless and breathtaking’ by the Sydney Morning Herald and ‘invigorating’ by Limelight , winning two Helpmann Awards that year. There’s no doubt Bell will bring the same exhilarating power to the three programmes he performs with the Academy when they return to the Sydney Opera House in October.

A teen prodigy born in Bloomington, Indiana, Bell was touring with the world’s great orchestras before he was 20. He became a household name in 2007 when a Pulitzer Prize-winning story in the Washington Post detailed his experiences busking – with his multimillion-dollar 1713 Stradivari violin – in the D.C. subway at peak hour. Now he has more than 40 albums under his belt, his television appearances span late-night talk shows to Sesame Street and Mozart in the Jungle , and he’s only the second musician to lead the acclaimed Academy of St Martin in the Fields, taking over from the orchestra’s founder, the legendary Sir Neville Marriner, in 2011.

When Bell came to Sydney in 2017, it was his first tour to Australia with the Academy since taking the helm – but his relationship with the ensemble began much earlier. The first CD the young violinist bought was the Academy’s recording of Mozart’s Requiem and he made his own first recording with Marriner and the Academy in 1986, playing Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, which he performs on this tour.

Since Marriner formed the ensemble in London in 1958, the Academy has become renowned for its punchy interpretations of classical favourites, the tight-knit chamber orchestra famous for its brilliant, gripping performances without a conductor. The Academy has released more than 500 recordings – including the soundtrack to the 1984 film Amadeus – and toured the world many times over.

An orchestra performing on stage in the Concert Hall as viewed from the back of the Hall.

In October 2023, in the refurbished Concert Hall, Bell and the Academy present three compelling programmes, featuring some of classical music’s best-loved violin concertos and greatest symphonies. The first sees Bell and the Academy return to Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, one of the Romantic Period’s great violin masterpieces and Mendelssohn’s final major work before his death in 1847. Bell then leads the Academy in Mendelssohn’s brooding ‘Scottish’ Symphony No.3, inspired by the German composer’s visit to Scotland as a young man in 1829. The concert opens with the Russian Sergei Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony, a dazzling 20th-century work that pays tribute to the Classical elegance of Haydn and Mozart.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto is the centrepiece of the second programme. Written in 1806 while the famous Fifth Symphony was still under construction, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is a radiant work by a composer best-known for his stormy disposition. The concert opens and closes with Mozart, beginning with the bubbly Overture to his wildly popular opera The Marriage of Figaro , written in 1786 when Mozart was at the height of his powers. Bell and the Academy performed Mozart’s ‘little’ G minor Symphony – No.25 – in Sydney in 2017, but this time around they’re playing the ‘big’ one, Symphony No.40 in G minor. The second of Mozart’s incredible final ‘trilogy’ of symphonies written in 1788, it begins with one of his most recognisable tunes.

An orchestra performing on stage as viewed from the audience. A violinist is standing centre stage.

Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro kicks off the final programme with a bang, before Bell pairs the beautiful, interweaving lines of Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach’s beloved Violin Concerto in A minor with the fiery passion and virtuosity of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Spanish-flavoured Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The concert comes to a blazing close with Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony, inspired by the sun and sights of Italy he experienced as a young composer on his Grand Tour of Europe.

Between the vibrant ‘life or death’ virtuosity of Joshua Bell and the stunning musical mastery of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, these unmissable concerts promise classical masterpieces like you’ve never heard them before.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields perform in the renewed Concert Hall from 7 – 9 October 2023 as part of our 50th Birthday Festival celebrations.

Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre

The world’s finest chamber orchestra returns, led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields ( ASMF ) is one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras, renowned for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s greatest orchestral music. Formed by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, the ASMF gave its first performance in its namesake church in November 1959.

Through unrivaled live performances and a vast recording output – highlights of which include the 1969 bestseller Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Amadeus – the orchestra has gained an enviable international reputation for its distinctive, polished, and refined sound. With over 500 releases in a much-vaunted discography and a comprehensive international touring program, the name and sound of the ASMF is known and loved by classical audiences throughout the world.

Today the orchestra is led by Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, retaining the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble which is an ASMF hallmark. Under Bell’s direction, and with the support of Leader/Director Tomo Keller, ASMF continues to push the boundaries of player-directed performance to new heights, presenting symphonic repertoire and chamber music on a grand scale at prestigious venues around the globe.

Director of Programming Marshall McGuire tells us more

Wednesday 4 October ‘Mozart and Beethoven, the greatest classical composers, share the billing here in a dazzling program of masterpieces. Mozart’s sparkling overture to The Marriage of Figaro is a joy from beginning to end, and his Symphony No.40 in G minor is truly one the great utterances of any composer of any time. This is music of drama, passion, relentless energy and exquisite beauty. As a centrepiece to this program, Joshua Bell is the star protagonist in Beethoven’s mighty violin concerto, an epic work full of unending delights. This will be one of the great highlights of Melbourne’s musical offering in 2023.’

Thursday 5 October ‘Mendelssohn, like Mozart, was a child prodigy and music flowed from his creative mind in a never-ending stream of delight. His violin concerto, here performed by Joshua Bell, is consistently regarded as one of the greatest works of all time – a virtuoso showcase for both soloist and orchestra. Mendelssohn’s third symphony – The Scottish – evokes a time and a place of rugged landscapes, romantic vistas, and of brooding and picturesque intensity.’

‘Age, they say, is not a number, but a state of mind. If that be true, then the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and its artistic director, Joshua Bell have discovered the fountain of musical youth.’ – Limelight Magazine

‘After the enthusiastic reception of the Mendelssohn symphony, Tchaikovsky had the final word, as the Waltz from his Serenade for Strings was given as an encore. Having well and truly won over the capacity audience, Bell and the players were totally relaxed and the famous string tone bloomed all the more, leaving me to marvel at the endless potential of these fine players.’ – Limelight Magazine

‘They were able to display their world-famous versatility in all its glory, sounding both like a symphonic orchestra and like a chamber ensemble at different times, and laying an exhilarating performance before an audience that could have easily started singing along in their enthusiasm.’ – Bachtrack

‘The Academy of St Martin in the Fields has been a shining light in the music world for decades, and their brilliance continues to shine to this day. Under the dynamic and inspired leadership of Joshua Bell, any performance by this outstanding group is guaranteed to be exhilarating. Joshua Bell

joshua bell australian tour

With a career spanning almost four decades, GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated artists of his era. Bell has performed with virtually every major orchestra in the world, and continues to maintain engagements as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor and as the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Bell’s highlights in the 2023-24 season include an international tour of his newly-commissioned project, The Elements, featuring works by renowned composers representing each of the five elements. Composers include Jake Heggie (Fire), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jessie Montgomery (Space), and Kevin Puts (Earth). The work will receive its premiere performances with the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Hong Kong Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Bell will also release his new album on Sony Classical, Butterfly Lovers , in summer 2023. The record features the  Butterfly Lovers  Violin Concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao, newly arranged for a traditional Chinese orchestra conducted by Tsung Yeh. Bell will also lead the Academy of St Martin in the Fields on tour in Australia and throughout the United States. Bell appears as artist-in-residence this season with the NDR Elbphilharmonie, and as guest artist with the New Jersey Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and more.

In 2011, Bell was named Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, succeeding Sir Neville Marriner, who formed the orchestra in 1959. Bell’s history with the Academy dates to 1986, when he first recorded the Bruch and Mendelssohn concertos with Marriner and the orchestra. Bell has since led the orchestra on several albums including Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh Symphonies, an all-Bach album,  For the Love of Brahms , and, most recently,  Bruch: Scottish Fantasy,  which was nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY® Award.

In summer 2020, PBS presented Joshua Bell: At Home With Music , a nationwide broadcast produced entirely in lockdown, by Tony and Emmy Award-winning director Dori Berinstein. The program included core classical repertoire as well as new arrangements of beloved works, including a West Side Story medley. The special featured guest artists Larisa Martínez, Jeremy Denk, Peter Dugan, and Kamal Khan. In August 2020, Sony Classical released the companion album to the special,  Joshua Bell: At Home With
 Music (Live) .

Bell has commissioned and premiered new works by John Corigliano, Edgar Meyer, Behzad Ranjbaran and Nicholas Maw, and his recording of Maw’s violin concerto received a GRAMMY® award.

Bell has collaborated with peers including Renée Fleming, Chick Corea, Regina Spektor, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Anoushka Shankar, Frankie Moreno, Josh Groban, and Sting, among others. In 2019, Bell joined his longtime friends and musical partners, cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Jeremy Denk, for a ten-city American trio tour; the trio also recorded Mendelssohn’s piano trios at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, slated for release next season.

In 1998, Bell worked with composer John Corigliano on recording the film soundtrack for The Red Violin , which elevated Bell to a household name and garnered Corigliano an Academy Award. Since then, Bell has appeared on several other film soundtracks, including Ladies in Lavender (2004) and Defiance (2008). Bell commemorated the 20th anniversary of The Red Violin (1998) in 2018-19, bringing the film with live orchestra to various festivals and the New York Philharmonic.

Bell has also appeared three times as a guest star on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and made numerous appearances on the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle . Bell is also featured on six Live From Lincoln Center specials, as well as a PBS Great Performances episode, “Joshua Bell: West Side Story in Central Park.”

In 2021, Bell announced his new partnership with Trala, the tech-powered violin learning app. Bell maintains active involvement with Education Through Music and Turnaround Arts, and in 2014, Bell mentored and performed alongside National YoungArts Foundation string musicians in an HBO Family Documentary special, Joshua Bell: A YoungArts Masterclass . Bell received the 2019 Glashütte Original MusicFestivalAward, presented in conjunction with the Dresden Music Festival, for his commitment to arts education.

Bell’s ongoing partnership with Embertone, the leading virtual instrument sampling company, on the Joshua Bell Virtual Violin, a sampler created for producers, engineers, artists, and composers, is widely considered the best virtual instrument of its kind. Bell also collaborated on the Joshua Bell VR experience with Sony PlayStation 4 VR, which features Bell performing with pianist Sam Haywood in full 360-degrees VR.

As an exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has recorded more than 40 albums, garnering GRAMMY®, Mercury®, Gramophone and OPUS KLASSIK awards. Bell’s 2019 Amazon Originals Chopin Nocturne arrangement was the first classical release of its kind on Amazon Music . Bell’s 2016 release, For the Love of Brahms , features recordings with the Academy, Steven Isserlis, and Jeremy Denk. Bell’s 2013 album with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, featuring Bell directing Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh symphonies, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

In 2007, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post story, centered on Bell performing incognito in a Washington, D.C. metro station, sparked an ongoing conversation regarding artistic reception. The feature inspired Kathy Stinson’s 2013 children’s book, The Man With The Violin , and an animated film with music by Academy Award-winning composer Anne Dudley. Stinson’s subsequent 2017 book, Dance With The Violin , illustrated by Dušan Petričić, offers a glimpse into one of Bell’s competition experiences at age 12. Bell debuted The Man With The Violin festival at the Kennedy Center in 2017, and, in March 2019, presented a Man With The Violin family concert with the Seattle Symphony.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Bell began playing the violin at age four, and at age twelve, began studies with his mentor, Josef Gingold. At age 14, Bell debuted with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 17 with the St. Louis Symphony. At age 18, Bell signed with his first label, London Decca, and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In the years following, Bell has been nominated for six GRAMMY® awards, named “Instrumentalist of the Year” by Musical America, deemed a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum, and received the Avery Fisher Prize. He has also received the 2003 Indiana Governor’s Arts Award and a Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1991 from the Jacobs School of Music. In 2000, he was named an “Indiana Living Legend.”

Bell has performed for three American presidents and the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. He participated in former president Barack Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ first cultural mission to Cuba, joining Cuban and American musicians on an Emmy-nominated PBS Live from Lincoln Center special; Joshua Bell: Seasons of Cuba , celebrating renewed cultural diplomacy between Cuba and the United States.

Joshua Bell kicks off the summer festival season with two performances at Music Academy of the West. The first evening features works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky ( July 2 ), followed by an all-Fauré program ( July 5 ). On July 13 , Bell joins Steven Isserlis and Jeremy Denk for an evening of Fauré works at the Aspen Music Festival before teaming up for Beethoven’s “Triple” Concerto at the festival on July 14 . Bell and Denk play a recital at the Minnesota Beethoven Festival on July 16 , before reuniting with Isserlis at the Appalachian Summer Festival for more Fauré on July 18 . Next, Bell and Denk play Rockport Music’s Summer Gala on July 28 with a program including works by Mozart and Beethoven.

On July 31 , Kirill Gerstein joins Bell and Isserlis for an evening of Debussy, Ravel, and Fauré at Tanglewood. The trio performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra on August 4 in an all-Beethoven program led by Alan Gilbert. Bell finishes the summer at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, playing his violin suite The Elements alongside works by Copland and Bernstein ( August 15 ).

This month, Joshua Bell and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe tour Spain and Germany with works by Beethoven and Brahms, stopping in Murcia ( April 23 ), Zaragoza ( April 24 ), and Ludwigsburg ( April 26 ).

In May, Bell joins forces with Larisa Martínez and Peter Dugan to bring their Voice & the Violin program to Costa Mesa ( May 5 ) followed by a recital with Bell and Dugan celebrating the 5th Anniversary of The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla ( May 6 ). Performances of Voice & the Violin continue in Lincoln, Nebraska ( May 9 ), Scottsdale, Arizona ( May 11 ), and Princeton, New Jersey ( May 28 ).

From May 16-18 , selections from Bell’s newly commissioned suite The Elements will be performed with the San Francisco Symphony. Conducted by Ryan Bancroft, the program includes the U.S. premiere of SF Symphony commission Alaraph ‘Ritus des Herzschlags’ by Unsuk Chin. Selections from The Elements receive performances at Kansas City Symphony on May 31-June 2 , and a one-night only performance with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on June 8 .

In mid-June, the complete suite for violin and orchestra arrives at Chicago Symphony Orchestra ( June 13-15 ). The Elements features works by American composers Kevin Puts (Earth), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Jake Heggie (Fire) and CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery (Space). Additional performances of The Elements follow at Seattle Symphony ( June 20 and 22 ).

Joshua Bell’s newly commissioned suite The Elements for violin and orchestra is a major highlight of his 2023/24 season, during which Bell will perform the piece with the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors. With five distinct movements by Jake Heggie (Fire), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jessie Montgomery (Space) and Kevin Puts (Earth), the work draws inspiration from the five classical elements and the need to preserve the beauty of our natural world.

Following workshop previews at the Colorado Music Festival conducted by Peter Oundjian ( August 3 & 6 ), the piece received its official world premiere with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra conducted by Alan Gilbert September 1 -2 . The Asian premiere took place September 8-9 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic conducted by Jaap van Zweden, who also conducted the North American premiere with the New York Philharmonic September 29-October 1 . Peter Oundjian returned to the podium on October 25 to conduct a performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The initial performances were universally acclaimed by the press.

“Even for composers known for their way with a lyrical line and satisfying harmonies, the fit between the movements was remarkable. Each was imaginative and distinctive while also flowing naturally from one to the other…Bell playing with his typical singing tone, with long, elegant phrases even in the fastest music. Though new, [the piece] seemed well-worn and comfortable for Bell and the musicians, with classic pleasures for the listener.” — The Financial Times

“…The Asian premiere of The Elements on Saturday was special. Conceived by American star violinist Joshua Bell early on in the coronavirus pandemic and commissioned from five contemporary US composers, it celebrates the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. With Bell as soloist in his own commission, there were neither bells nor whistles.” — South China Post

“The incredibly, sometimes almost intangibly brilliant, star violinist Joshua Bell presented the world premiere of “The Elements” with Gilbert and the orchestra, the composition of which he himself initiated by five leading US composers in 2019-23. The entire work was harmoniously, melodically and poignantly sensitive…” — Die Welt

Additional performances include complete performances the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Juraj Valčuha ( June 13-15 ), the Seattle Symphony conducted by Peter Oundjian ( June 20 & 22 ), and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gianandrea Noseda next season. Selections will also be performed by the San Francisco Symphony ( May 16–18 ) and the Kansas City Symphony ( May 31–June 2 ).

Paris 2024 Olympics: Catherine Skinner to lead Australian shooting team

Catherine Skinner of Australia

Rio 2016 Olympic champion trap shooter Catherine Skinner is among the 10 athletes selected for the Australian shooting team at the Paris 2024 Olympics by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in Brisbane on Thursday.

The Australian shooters were selected for the Paris 2024 team based on their performances in international and domestic competitions over the past six months.

After missing the Tokyo Olympics due to a loss in selection trials, Skinner is set to compete in her second Games. She enters the marquee event with momentum, having secured a bronze medal at the Lonato Shotgun World Cup earlier this month.

The 10-member Australian Olympic shooting team features a seasoned squad, with men’s skeet shooter Joshua Bell being the only one making his Olympic debut.

World No. 2 men’s trap shooter James Willett , who won the gold medal at the Baku World Cup in May, returns for his third Olympics.

Tokyo Olympian Penny Smith , silver medallist at the Baku World Cup, skeet shooter Aislin Jones and men’s trap shooter Mitchell Iles return for their second Games.

While six shooters will represent Australia in shotgun events at Paris 2024, two each have been named for the pistol and rifle events.

Dane Sampson will return for his fourth Olympics while Jack Rossiter will compete at his third. Both athletes will compete in the 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions.

In the pistol events, Elena Galiabovitch will make her third appearance, with Tokyo Olympian Sergei Evglevski named to his second Olympic team.

At the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, Australia sent a 15-member shooting team but returned without a medal.

Australian shooters have won a total of 11 medals - five golds, one silver and five bronzes in their Olympic history.

Shooting at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be held from July 27 to August 5 at the Châteauroux Shooting Centre.

Australia’s shooting team for Paris 2024 Olympics

  • Shotgun : Catherine Skinner, James Willett, Penny Smith, Aislin Jones, Mitchell Iles, Joshua Bell
  • Rifle : Dane Sampson, Jack Rossiter
  • Pistol : Elena Galiabovitch, Sergei Evglevski

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
