This work is licensed under CC BY 4.0 The study aimed at scrutinizing the impact of Airbnb on the Philippine hotel accommodation sector with regards to occupancy rates and the number of tourist arrivals. The more extensive point was to make a functional contribution to the current discussions and issues around the sharing accommodation, in particular Airbnb platform, from an ethnically diverse country standpoint. This study used a quantitative explanatory approach, and a secondary data sampling technique was adopted. Statistics from the Philippines were obtained from the DOT library while Airbnb data was purchased from AirDNA last September-November 2019. Secondary data collected were analyzed through SPSS. The study measured the relationship between Airbnb occupancy rates and tourist arrival. Moreover, to test whether Airbnb is directly competing with the lower category of hotel in terms of occupancy rates, the correlational examination was taken into account. Pearson R coefficient was utilized followed by a regression analysis to come up with a model. The findings inferred that it is Airbnb that has most influenced the activity of the tourism industry sector most especially under the accommodation sector and apparently set up to be a threat to the budget traditional providers. The result of the examination required for a business reaction for the traditional providers on the best way to team up with Airbnb to give better accommodation preferences for the increasing number of travelers in the country.

Safety practices of tourism products have been a huge reason to choose from. Lacking of good safety practices might become disadvantages for the tourism industry. This study aims to examine the perception of local tourists on the safety practices applied by the tourism industry. The perception has been examined on the three aspect, (1) safety practices in terms of accommodation; (2) safety practices in terms of accessibility; and (3) enforcement practices by local authorities. A total of 30 respondents consists of local tourists that visited Malacca City were involved. Descriptive analysis of mean and percentage was employed to test the objectives. The results showed that local tourists were concerns of the accommodation quality with mean of 4.03, make sure the vehicles were safe to access with mean of 3.97 and local tourist feel safer with local enforcement with mean of 4.06. Undeniable the safety practices of the tourism industry do give popular concerned among the local tourists.

This study was carried out to measure terrorism effects on components of tourism businesses (hotels) in northeastern Nigeria using Boko Haram as a case study. Secondary data on nature, date, and the number of fatalities from the Boko Haram attack was sourced from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED). Data on tourism businesses including hotel room occupancy rate, revenue profile, and employees’ profile was sourced from each state tourism development board. A total of 558 hotels were selected in a one-stage cluster sampling technique. The study adopts a longitudinal research design where inferential statistics was performed with the use of SPSS. This paper aims to establish the motivation factors behind the accommodation choices made by millennials for stays at short-term rental properties and small hotels amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a topic that remains under-represented in the hospitality and tourism literature. Using data from a survey of 145 millennials who stayed at an Airbnb property and a small hotel in the past year, a non-parametric test was utilized to compare six motivation factors that affect millennials' accommodation choices, guided by the push-pull motivational framework. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test results showed that the millennials significantly considered price and reviews as their common pull motivations when making accommodation choices. Interestingly, motivation factors such as location, service quality, facilities and amenities, safety, and security do not appear to significantly influence the millennials' choices for either accommodation. This study applies tax planning theory to develop a seasonal tax strategy as an alternative to a fixed tax rate for shared lodging platforms such as Airbnb, to increase hosts’ revenue and to address seasonality in tourism. The annual revenue of the various types of accommodation is used to calculate a seasonality index by the moving average method, which is incorporated as a corrected coefficient in a seasonal tax formula. The sample includes data from 1258 active Airbnb listings in Boston, Massachusetts. Using a mean comparison test, this study reveals that the application of a seasonal tax strategy significantly increases the revenue of Airbnb hosts compared to a fixed tax rate system. Drawing on the flexibility tenet of tax planning theory, policymakers can use the proposed seasonal tax strategy as an instrument to revisit the taxation system for sharing economy businesses based on changes to the socio-economic, environmental and political conditions. The purpose of this conceptual paper is an attempt to introduce the model which illustrates the internal marketing strategy. It based on a critical review of the literature for insights that integrate internal Muslim-friendly hotels (MFH) and provide customer satisfaction. The review suggests that scholars in the area of Islamic marketing should start working towards the internal environment of MFH, in addition to discussing the importance of customers without looking at the needs of internal MFH. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that involves service climate, service behavior, and customer satisfaction. The dyadic interaction between employees-customers in a service serves as a basis of the conceptual framework development. This paper also suggests a dyadic multilevel method to investigate these relationships.

Employees in the hotel industry are the key personnel who contribute to giving guests the satisfactory experience they expect. Therefore, it is important that every employee strives to improve his/her job. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of job satisfaction, leadership style, and organisational structure on job performance, with the moderating role of quality of work-life among employees working in Jordanian hotels. The study explores the perceptions of employees working in five-star hotels in Jordan in order to verify the validity and reliability of the study instrument. The study was applied to a small sample, and SPSS analysis software was used. The study validated the reliability of the instrument in conducting a preliminary study, obtaining reasonable normality and highly reliable coefficients of measures (0.927-0.986). The study validated the effectiveness of the instrument that examined different specific antecedents of job performance.

The aim of the paper was to investigate the impact of different accommodation attributes on Airbnb listing prices in a touristic area. The study applied hedonic price modeling utilizing a sample of 2417 Airbnb accommodation rental offers in the Lake Balaton Touristic Region in Hungary. Our results revealed that property-related attributes significantly influence Airbnb prices although the magnitude of these effects is very diverse and complex. The OLS findings showed that the provision of air conditioning, free internet, and free parking are the main determinants of Airbnb price in the sample area, while the number of available photos and the presence of a kitchen does not significantly influence the price. The quantile regression results further demonstrated that capacity, the provision of breakfast, and TV leads to higher prices among the higher-priced accommodations, while the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, smoking, and free parking influence more the prices of lower-end accom...

This research summarizes the arguments and counterarguments within the scientific discussion on the issue of potential tax evasions and increased rental rates that one of innovative home-sharing platforms might causes. The study aims to find possible tax evasion that each property and each host can cause by considering creative activities in tourism marketing and a sharing economy platform, Airbnb in Prague. Besides, the authors identified the potential problems in the rental accommodation market. This paper aims to critically analyse the circular economy (CE) models adopted in hospitality and tourism to tackle societal challenges in the current Anthropocene era, exploring the driving values and sustainability approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was carried out with an increasing level of analysis to delve more in-depth into the ability of the CE models to respond to current societal challenges. The review involved a stepwise analysis, starting with a thematic analysis of 151 papers to create a conceptual structure map of circular hospitality and tourism literature. Based on originality and representativeness, 22 papers were selected and analysed according to Hoffman and Jennings’ (2018; 2021) institutional approach to sustainability, which entails specific archetypes to address the Anthropocene society: market rules, technology fix and cultural re-enlightening.

The hospitality and tourism industry has made progress towards implementing CE models. However, CE models in market role and technology fix archetypes may fail to address the current challenges of the Anthropocene era. New culture-led approaches within the cultural re-enlightening archetype, such as the regenerative land practices, a-growth and place-making, and circular society, can foster a more radical shift towards strong sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The paper highlights the urgent need for a cultural shift towards radical and strong sustainability, identifying future research directions. Policymakers have a crucial role in shaping sustainability practices consistent with an ecological culture centred on acknowledging planetary boundaries.

Originality/value

Despite the increasing interest in CE models, it is still debated how the hospitality and tourism industry can continue to thrive while avoiding harmful impacts on the environment and local communities. The study critically reflects on the current contribution of CE models towards strong sustainability in hospitality and tourism.

Hospitality expert with international teaching experience brings entrepreneurial perspective to students

Chang brings knowledge of organizational behavior and human resources to department of hospitality, hotel management and tourism.

An expert with wide-ranging hospitality, international teaching and entrepreneurial experience, Wen Chang, Ph.D., has joined the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism as an assistant professor.   

Chang, who earned her graduate and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and taught here before going back to her native China, has returned to the U.S. to share her knowledge and experience with students and colleagues in the department.  

Her expertise ranges from human resources, financial, revenue and leadership management in the tourism industry to hospitality management, operations and law. Her industry experience spans food and beverage management, as well as spa and recreation management.

“Dr. Chang brings a wealth of personal experience and expertise related to the hospitality industry, as well as an international background as an instructor,” said Brian King, Ph.D., head of the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism. “Our department and students are benefiting from her knowledge of issues relating to organizational behaviors within the hospitality industry, focusing primarily on employee motivations, leadership and technology-mediated service quality enhancements.”

King added that Chang’s contributions to academia and industry reflect her dedication to advancing knowledge and improving the hospitality sector.

“I feel my international teaching experience and familiarity with both the Chinese and U.S. hospitality industries will bring a new perspective to the department and my students,” Chang said. “And having owned and operated my own business, I also bring an entrepreneurial perspective to my teaching.”  

Education and teaching experience

Chang earned a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hotel management from the School of Tourism and Hotel Management at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China. She came to the U.S. in 2009 to continue her studies, earning a master’s degree in hotel and restaurant management from the Conrad Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. After that, she earned her doctorate in hotel administration from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Chang’s extensive experience includes time as the associate dean at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and as an associate professor and director of international programs at the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.   

Chang also spent time as an assistant professor at Iowa State University’s College of Human Science Department of Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management, and as a visiting lecturer and teaching assistant at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for five years.

“In my teaching, I strive to give my students the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the hospitality industry,” Chang said. “I want them to know the way things really are, why they matter and why they should be done a certain way. My main goal with my students is to prepare them for a career in the industry.”  

Chang chaired master’s committees and served on several doctoral committees at Iowa State University and Dongbei University of Finance and Economics. She was also an external Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management committee member at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Publications, presentations and achievements

Chang’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications, and she has served as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management and the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights.

Chang has made conference presentations on a wide variety of topics, including employee performance, leadership influence, service robots, wine consumer behaviors, anger in hospitality, employee engagement, tourism career motivators and barriers, career satisfaction, formal mentoring, social media use and more.

She has also successfully secured research grants from the National Science Foundation of China and the Liaoning Provincial Development and Reform Commission, as well as teaching grants from the Educational Department of Liaoning Province.   

Chang also received internal grants and scholarships from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the University of Houston; the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics; and the Tianjin University of Finance and Economics.
