Blow out the birthday cake (1/12) on the table. Head left from the start until you find a maggot (1/10) to eat. Continue left to find Bud, who is trapped. Click on the barrel to free him. Now head right until you reach a locked gate. Click on the lock to reveal a key from behind a rock. Use this on the lock and the gate will open. Click on the bars to free Bud once more.

Continue right into a larger room. Come forward and climb up the left wall, following it around until you find a maggot (2/10) to eat. Next pull the left lever. Climb back down to the floor and pick up the bone from the skeleton. Go back up and use the bone on the right lever, then pull it. Follow Bud to the far right and up out of the sewers.

Click on the 3 webs holding you suspended and you will be free. Take the duct tape from the shelves and the broom from the blue bucket. Climb up to the ceiling and take the plunger. Combine all 3 items in your inventory, then use this to free Bud Walk like a roach . Head back and right along the fallen ventilation shaft to reach a new area with a mother spider.

Climb down to the floor and pick up a fly. Put the fly into the bags hanging on the left of the ironing board. Pick up the net that falls down. Head to the right of the room and search the blue crate, then pick up the toy airplane that falls out. Blow out the birthday cake (2/12) just to the left. Come forward and head right to a narrow corridor, where you can pick up two further objects. Head back to the left and up to the ceiling above the mother spider. Go a little further, past the ceiling fan, to get a spool of red string, then continue further to get a third object. Keep going to find a nail to pick up, which will lead to you breaking something (1/6) . Also find another maggot (3/10) to eat.

Return to the mother spider and hang your net on the 3 pegs on the side wall. Fix the net with your red string. Now stand near the ramp on the floor to force the moving fly up the ramp and into the net. Put the second fly into the bags. Pick up the can that falls down. Use the can on the sewing machine, then add the nail to it. Use the foot pedal to activate the sewing machine, then take the opened can and use it in the red bowl to the right. Pick up a third fly and go and put it into the bags. Now take the toy mouse that falls to the ground. Climb up to the ceiling fan and try to take another fly, which will lead to you breaking something (2/6) .

Go down into the new room, which is a laundry. Take the red boxing gloves from the ceiling and the funnel from the side wall. Go to the floor and chase the fly, which will end up in a safe. Examine the safe to see 3 dials, and use these items:

  • Toy mouse and funnel
  • Clown-faced object
  • Toy plane and lid from can

After the safe opens, use the boxing gloves on yourself, then collect the fly from the safe. Also pick up the box of soap from next to the washing machine, and the paint brush from the right side of the room. Go to the room just to the left and use the paint brush in the paint bucket. Head to the far left room and put your fly into the bags.

Just in front of the mother spider, use your paint brush on the cardboard on the floor. Go up to the ceiling to scare the fly down, then go back down and collect it from the cardboard. Head to the laundry and use the washing machine 3 times Cleaning Bug . Use your soap in the washing machine, then use the washing machine once more. Go and put the last fly into the bags Fly Whisperer .

Follow the mother spider back into a new area.

Head down to the bottom of the elevator shaft and pick up the remote control. Blow out the birthday cake (3/12) . Press the green button on the wall to turn it red and the nearby fan will stop spinning. Head past the fan into the ventilation shafts and pick up a maggot (4/10) from inside, then continue until you find another room. Search the ceiling for a small bag of chocolates. Take the wooden barricade from the door and enter the next room. Talk to the rat in here and pick up the glass that he throws. Climb the wall and take the golden lightning bolt from over the doorway. Head through the doorway to the next area.

Go up on to the platform in front of the bar and take a battery from the small table. Continue left into the kitchen. Take some rotten milk from the refrigerator, then climb up into the air vents above the kitchen and eat another maggot (5/10) . As you come back down to the kitchen, blow out the birthday cake (4/12) above the next entrance to the left. Return into the kitchen and put the battery in the glass, then use this combination on the soda dispenser behind the bar.

Go back into the main part of the bar and use the lightning bolt on the piano, then pick up the cigar from the top of the piano. Head up to the ceiling here to blow out another birthday cake (5/12) . Take the light bulb from above the singer. Explore the rest of the ceiling and put the bulb in the smashed light fitting. Now head down to the floor again and click on the left insect playing games at the table. Give this insect your chocolate, then click on the glasses to start a game. Choose a random glass and you will lose. Repeat this and lose 5 times Honest soul . Give the insert some more chocolate and start another game. This time click on the light switch picture, then quickly click on the glasses to see where the ball is located. Once the insect returns, click on the correct glass to win the game.

Take the map from the broken piano, then head right and give the map to the rat. Take the jar from near the gate where the rat just left, then head to the room on the right. Go up to the ceiling and you will see a baby ant sleeping in a hammock; use your glass (with the battery and soda) on the baby ant to wake him up. Go down to the floor and use your cigar on the older ant who has now woken up. Talk to the old ant, who now wants a light. Click on the top of the furnace to the left 3 times to tilt it towards the old ant, then click the bottom of the furnace to light his cigar. Pick up the coin that he gives you.

Head to the room on the left and use the coin on the vending machine, then pick up the fan it dispenses. Return right and go up to the ceiling. Replace the broken fan with your new one, then press the red button on the wall to start it up again. Go down to the floor and look at the book under the corner of the couch. Go back up to the ceiling and search to find a scarf in a secret compartment that has just opened. Use your jar on the baby ant, then quickly use your scarf on the jar to trap the baby ant inside. Pick up the jar, then go back down to the stage and give the jar to the singer, who is crying.

Pick up the bag of chocolates from near the large table on the right, and give it to the insect at the left table wearing the pirate hat. Click on the glasses to start a game, then click on the picture frame and quickly on the glasses to see where the ball is located. Once the insect is paying attention again, click on the correct glass to win the game (and receive a wooden leg). Use this on the toy truck on the other side of the game table. Use your bag of chocolates on the last game player. Click on the glasses to start a game, then use your remote on the picture of the toy truck; while the insect is distracted, quickly click on the glasses to see where the ball is located. Once the insect is paying attention again, click on the correct glass to win the game (and receive a uniform).

Return right to the old ant and give him the uniform in exchange for some goggles and a walkie-talkie. Stand to the left of the old ant and use the bottom of the furnace 3 times to burn yourself. Now head back up the elevator shaft to the mother spider. Give her the rotten milk in exchange for some silk. Go far left to the kitchen and use the silk on the pot of black soup, then pick up your new black silk. Next use the silk, shower head and goggles on yourself. You should now be able to enter the small elevator at the bottom left of the kitchen Down-Town .

Walk around to the ceiling and take the green handkerchief. Continue into the next room with the spilled waste material. Make your way up into the ventilation duct in the ceiling to find a birthday cake (6/12) . Climb back down to the floor again. Pick up the sponge from the drawer in the right side of the room. Continue right over a narrow plank to reach a control room. There is another birthday cake (7/12) on the right. Pick up the blue key from the right end of the console, and use it on the nearby blue slot. Now climb down the ladders to the left and head right to see Bud in a cage. Continue right and talk to the ant to see he wants a burger. Climb up to the right to find the next birthday cake (8/12) . Head to the left past the cage and pick up the electric rod to the right of the large wheels. Pull the lever to the left until the 4th green light is activated.

Head to the left and press the red button to move the water to the right. Continue left and pick up the can of fish food and then the shoe. Press the red button again then head right, up the ladders and left to the spilled waste. Use the can of fish food on the aquarium 5 times No additives! . Use your fish food on the waste, then go right and use the food on the aquarium, which will result in your breaking something (3/6) . Pick up the screwdriver, then head back down the ladders and right to the ant that wants a burger. In your inventory, combine the shoe, sponge and handkerchief, and give this to the ant. Next pick up the gold key and use it on the cage so you can take the yellow rubber ducky. While you are here, look at the music on the chart just to the left and take note of the colors on the bottom row. Go back up to the control room and put the yellow rubber ducky in its space on the large desk. Now click on the rubber duckies in the order from the music (yellow, dark blue, green, red, black, dark blue) - this will put the ant up here to sleep. Pick up the keycard from next to him. Return to the room on the left and climb up the left wall, then go to the ceiling over the sleeping ant go get a maggot (6/10) .

Return down the ladders to the large wheels and pull the lever until the 1st green light is activated. Continue left and use your screwdriver on the electrical box, which results in breaking something (4/6) . Now climb up to the ceiling and use your electric rod on the sparking device on the ceiling. Now you need to get down to the ceiling while maintaining your electric charge:

  • Go up until you hit the wall
  • Go left down the side wall until you are stopped
  • Walk slowly between the cut pipes
  • Go down to the floor

Touch the screwdriver to transfer the charge to the electrical box. Press the red button to move the water again and go left. Use your keycard on the slot, then go through the door and collect the med-kit. In this room you will also find a birthday cake (9/12) and a maggot (7/10) . Return right and press the red button again. Go right and pull the lever until the 3rd green light is activated. Give the med-kit to the caterpillar in the wheel. Get into the wheel on the right and run left - you will be caught and put in the cage after Bud escapes.

Pick up the spoon from the crate, and use it on the patch of dirt to the left until it is cleared. Climb down into the shaft. In here you must avoid a series of fans; after passing each one, press the green button so that if you get hit you don't need to avoid the same fans again. At the very end, open the latch on the gate and head through. Climb around and go back in to press the final green button. There is an achievement for doing this without hitting any of the fans Welcome to Alcatraz . Climb out and go right into a new room Out of the frying pan into the fire .

Climb up the left wall and pick up the Swiss army knife. Continue up this wall and go slightly forward to find a green fuel tank to collect. There is also a birthday cake (10/12) here. Go back down to the ground and use the crane controls. You move the crane around using the red buttons and activate the crane to pick up or drop a crate by pulling the grey lever. Pick up the crates and move one to the middle left spot, one to the middle right, and one to the lower right. Now you can safely go down the new opening right near the controls. Go to the end of this passage and pick up the pickaxe. Climb back out and head further to the right, so you can pick up the nail-gun (this will remove one of the guards).

Go to the back right part of the room and pull the large lever to open another trapdoor. Climb down and you will end up on the roof of a cave. Use your pickaxe on the large brown stalactite and you will end up breaking something (5/6) . Climb into the other shaft and grab the maggot (8/10) , then return to the cave. Pick up the batteries at the other end of the cave (on top of a barrel on the ground) and combine them with your walkie-talkie. Return up and use the lever to close the trapdoor again.

Climb up to the platform above the crane controls. Use your walkie-talkie on the radio transmitter, then use it to call in your friends.

Use the crane controls again to stack all 3 crates at the upper right location. Go over and climb them to get another maggot (9/10) . Go around to the ground to the left of the large missile and climb up the left wall to find the last maggot (10/10) Slimy, yet satisfying . Pick up the mushroom from next to where Bud is being held. Pull the lever to open the trapdoor once more. Return to the crane controls and put the mushroom in the empty space. Use the crane controls to pick up the insect guarding Bud and place him down beneath the trapdoor. Stack all 3 crates on the central platform Pile'em Up . Put two of them in the middle right position, and one in the top right position (down through the trapdoor). Use the crane to pick up the central platform where the guard was standing.

Climb up the right wall to find a birthday cake (11/12) on a catwalk. Continue up to the ceiling and use your Swiss army knife on the rope holding up an angled catwalk to make it fall. Climb down and walk over this to reach the top of the missile, and pick up another fuel tank. Walk down and left to where the guard's platform is being held and take a purple key. Go to the under-surface of this platform and use the hook to save Bud. Now go back down the shaft where you placed the guard, and you will see him being beaten up by the rat. Pick up a third fuel tank from here. Blow out the candle on the final birthday cake (12/12) The cake is not a lie .

Climb up to the missile again and use all 3 of your fuel tanks on the hatch on the right side. Back at the crane controls, release the guard's platform, then press the bottom left button to end up breaking something (6/6) Like a bull in a china shop . Head up through the broken glass and use your key in the slot on the right. Push the big red button to launch the missile A new hope .

You can only find the cakes if you are playing the game between the dates of November 4 and November 30. There are several other achievements that will require you to play the game at least once more:

This is my first walkthrough so please be nice.

Post apocalyptic landscape, no humans abound only insects ... Things you need to get are highlighted.

You meet our hero Jim the roach with a speech bubble detailing the movement controls W, A, S, D. You can also use the arrow keys if you want. As a roach you are able to walk up walls and the roof. Walk to the left wall and climb it until you are outside the sewer pipe where bud fell down. I dont know the purpose of the worm/caterpillar but you can click it to eat it.

Go inside the sewer pipe where Bud tells you hes trapped by the barrel. Click to move the barrel and free bud. Once free he proceeds to tell you about this live flower he saw outside.

Go back to the starting point and enter the pipe to the right. Keep moving right until you see a locked gate. Click the lock and a rock will slide revealing the key . Take the key. Open your inventory and then use the key on the lock. Click the bars to free Bud.

Move to the right until you see Bud. Climb the wall to the left, walk up the roof and go down the right side of the wall. Eat the worm. Go left and then pull the left lever where it opens up another pipe and a big fish pops out. Bud touches the fish and it vomits up a skeleton.

Go down to the floor and pick up a skeleton bone . Go up to where the switches are and use the bone on the right side to make a right lever. Pull the bone lever to stop the sewage pipe from spouting water. Move right and follow bud up the shaft and watch the cutscene of them falling down.

Click the web holding you three times to free yourself. On the shelves take the duct tape , in a blue bucket take the broom . Walk up the walls and onto the roof. Move towards the shelves and take the plunger . Combine the broom, plunger and duct tape. Use this contraption to free bud. Watch the cutrscene where Bud falls down again.

Continue walking to the right until you see a cave in and pick up thingamajig 2 (looks like 2 faces in sideview).

Go back to where mama spider is and walk up the roof. Near her head is a red spool of thread which you need to get. Continue walking the roof going left until you see a wall near a rotating fan. In the shelf near a pipe is thingamajig 3 which you need to take (looks like a mouse). Move Jim towards you and then keep moving left where the picture frames are. Get the nail . Keep moving left until you see the worm. Feeding time.

Go back to the room where mama spider is. Hang the net on the pegs and use the red spool of thread to fix it. Notice where the fly is running around on the floor, you will also see a wooden ramp. A bug's life.

Nobody really likes roaches, do they? They're pretty gross looking, after all, and they serve no real purpose other than to wake you up by skittering along the wood floor of your bedroom in the middle of the night. Yet science suggests that these nasty creatures would outlast humans in a nuclear apocalypse, which is the basis for Journey of a Roach, a point-and-click adventure game that does the impossible: it makes roaches likable.

Perhaps even more impressive is that it does so without any dialogue. Journey of a Roach tells the story of two roaches: Jim and his clumsy buddy, Bud. Upon getting a glimpse of a flower growing in the barren wasteland of what appears to be a postapocalyptic Earth, Bud tries to guide Jim to the beautiful plant, only to fall deep underground where all sorts of mutated bugs live. On your journey to rescue him, you discover a world full of interesting and varied characters, all brimming with plot and personality despite never speaking a word. It's as if Pixar's A Bug's Life merged with the animated movie 9 .

Can you believe there's an empty table at this place?

As a roach, one of your biggest advantages is the ability to crawl up walls and across ceilings, which is immediately neat and useful. You can move freely around the environment with the keyboard or analog stick, and climbing walls makes traversal easy. There are occasional issues with movement, such as when you might not be able to climb onto something that should be no real obstacle for a roach, or moments when the camera rotation is disorienting when you're climbing on ceilings (particularly in one section with air vents you must crawl through), but for the most part, getting around is not a problem.

Though they never speak a word, the characters are wonderfully diverse.

Since Journey of a Roach has no dialogue and isn't heavy on story, the majority of the experience comes down to solving puzzles. This is where the game's point-and-click inspirations are clearest; most puzzles boil down to the tried-and-true "find item in one area, use item somewhere else" mechanics. That said, Journey of a Roach seems to have learned some lessons from both successful and failed adventure games of recent years, and most puzzle solutions do make logical sense (as opposed to requiring seemingly random item combinations that lead to more guesswork than brainpower, like many adventures of old).

Even if you get stuck, you can often get a subtle hint by hovering the cursor over a specific object, which can alleviate some of the frustration of not knowing what an inventory item might be used for. There are a few moments when you might have to resort to trial and error (one puzzle in particular I solved completely by accident, and I'm not sure I would have figured out the solution on my own), but generally, this hint system works well to inform you of exactly what you should be doing.

Hint bubbles help keep your goals clear throughout the journey.

There is also a handy feature that lets you zoom out slightly and highlight "hot spots" (the objects in the environment you can interact with), which can help you locate some of the harder-to-find items. The small arrows it uses to point out objects of interest, however, aren't always enough help. It's still possible that you will spend more time than you'd like beating your head against a puzzle only to discover that you missed the necessary item hidden in the corner of an adjacent room. In this sense, Journey of a Roach falls into the same sorts of traps many adventure games fall into, which you will either find nostalgic or frustrating, depending on your history with the genre.

Though the journey itself is charming, it's the puzzles that keep you pushing forward. None of the puzzles are especially demanding, and you can finish the game in a single two- to three-hour sitting, which feels like an appropriate length once the credits start rolling. Once you know all the solutions to the puzzles, however, the game can easily be completed in under half an hour (in fact, a Steam achievement awards you for finishing it in under 18 minutes). This is not a game for which you'll want to rely on a walkthrough, because it will be over far too quickly.

Journey of a Roach is a charming, worthwhile adventure with some clever puzzles and a nice cast of characters, though you may wish for a longer adventure for the price. It makes some of the same mistakes as its ancestors, but it makes up for most of them with clever design and a unique world. If all roaches were this enjoyable to be around, maybe I wouldn't mind knowing they'll outlive humanity.

  • Leave Blank
  • Charming world and characters make roaches enjoyable companions
  • Puzzles mostly make sense and are a joy to solve
  • Climbing on walls keeps classic mechanics fresh
  • Occasionally commits classic adventure game sins

Playing Every Video Game Ever Released And Reviewing Them Along The Way

Journey of a Roach (PC)

journey of roach

Back in the summer of 2011, I joined Steam so that I could play the newly free-to-play shooter Team Fortress 2. Like many others though, as soon as I entered that PC gaming ecosystem, I soon found my gaming library swelling as I scooped up title after title during steep discounts and frequent sales. However, despite often checking the games that had been reduced to the lowest prices, there was one game I kept skipping over. Sometimes going for less than a dollar, Journey of a Roach became a recognizable face in the sale section, and while it looked somewhat interesting, for some reason I never took the plunge. Over seven years after its original release in 2013 though, Journey of a Roach finally ended up in my hands… through Blacknut’s streaming service, meaning I still never bought it on Steam. However, after so many years of never committing to grabbing it, it seems I actually was missing out on something rather interesting.

Journey of a Roach takes place in a world after humankind has seemingly wiped itself out with nuclear war. The surface of the planet is a wasteland, but underneath the ground a thriving society of human-sized bugs have eked out a living using what they salvaged from our society. Two roaches live in the subterranean complex these mutated creatures call home, a smaller green-eyed bug being the game’s playable lead and his taller blue-eyed buddy being an accident-prone companion with a more understandably trepidatious worldview than his adventurous friend. The green-eyed roach happens to come across the first sign of new life on the surface while scavenging one day, but before he can show his friend the flower sprouting out of the soil, the blue-eyed bug stumbles down deep into the underground world and ends up caught up in the affairs of the gas mask wearing ants and their unusual experiments. Saving your friend becomes the driving force of this adventure, with the player solving puzzles and interacting with other underground insects to make their way deeper down to find out what the ants are up to.

journey of roach

Despite being a point-and-click adventure with all the inventory puzzle roadblocks you’d expect of the genre, Journey of a Roach avoids the other common staple of their design: the emphasis on writing. Whether it be funny dialogue or intricate story-telling, the point-and-click’s propensity for being a way to experience an interesting story isn’t the main draw here, as the denizens of the underground bunker turned insect society can’t actually speak in words. They’ll make noises at each other that mean something to them, but the player is only able to perceive their meaning through speech bubbles that contain illustrations of what is being discussed. Some can be a little hard to figure out which can be an issue since the game’s hints at puzzle solutions or how items will be used are often in the form of the green-eyed roach making an observation illustrated through this method, but for the most part the game has a pretty good handle of how to use it to both express character emotions, demonstrate how something works, or wordlessly give you the basics of some character’s storyline. A wasp recounts his failed attempt to rise up against the ants, a firefly fauns over the nightclub singer with a lightbulb in her hair, and a motherly spider takes care of flies like they were pets in a world that can convey character pretty decently through design and these visual speech bubbles. While we won’t get the narrative depth or memorable personalities we might have got if they were able to speak English, the characters are still memorable and integrate into the game world well both as people you interact with and parts of the often intricate puzzle solving segments.

To make up for not having its writing be the main draw, Journey of a Roach instead focuses heavily on its puzzle solving component to carry the day. The adventure is divided into a few open areas where you can travel about to find items, speak with other bugs, and figure out how things fit together across the self-contained area. Even with the options limited to the current navigable space though, Journey of a Roach has some surprisingly involved puzzles with multiple steps to achieving your goal. One of the best ways to illustrate this is the portion near the bug night club where some ants are blocking a door deeper into the underground facility and you need to concoct a disguise to make them think you’re one of them. Problem is, the ants are a different color, are wearing gas masks, and have a much larger abdomen then you, so you need to find objects in the area that can serve as costume pieces, perform the right actions to get them from their owners, and alter them so everything looks convincing. Your inventory can get rather packed as you start trying to figure out how your pieces fit into the current puzzles, challenges ranging from trying to figure out how to grant a character’s desires like the diva wanting some music to learning the right sequence of actions to open up more opportunities like learning the lullaby that will put a guard to sleep.

journey of roach

These detailed puzzles definitely have some moments of strange logic, especially when some of the speech bubbles that seem like clues are actually just the roach imagining a humorous outcome rather than something relevant to the actual puzzle. The self-contained nature of the area does mean that you can eventually find the one area where things finally click with some experimentation though, and from there things tend to snowball as roadblocks often pull back to reveal a few new activities to engage with that open up the area’s grander puzzle design. An important aspect of Journey of a Roach’s problem solving is actually how you move about during these segments, as the cockroach character isn’t limited to just walking back and forth on the ground like us humans. Not only can he move around the area in 3D space, but so long as he approaches a wall that isn’t obstructed by something like a pipe or trash, the roach can begin climbing up it and completely twist the world he finds himself in. Climbing across the walls and ceilings as well as on the sides of objects is a vital part of most every major area’s interconnected puzzle. Sometimes it’s to gain access to a vent that can carry you into a new location that was otherwise inaccessible, and other times it gives you a perspective to the action where you can grab an item that would have been out of reach if your feet were locked to the ground. It can be a little disorienting to have the screen rotate so often, but it’s easy to adapt to once you’ve gotten over the initial shock. Instead, the movement’s only lasting issue is the rare moment the game tries to be a little too clever with it, such as one portion where the cockroach needs to maintain his connection to an electrical current and he’s moving through a tight space where it’s easy to accidentally cause the electricity to cut off by touching level geometry.

The different perspective that wall-crawling can provide adds an interesting layer of depth to the exploration of the selection of puzzle hubs, and the game even hides little grubs about for players who skitter off into the corners that weren’t demanding your attention. These are mostly there for collection’s sake though, but the game does concoct some actual hazardous segments for the crawling too like having to time your movement through spinning fans in a vent. The inventory puzzles are definitely the bigger focus though and the thought put into their design continues to shine as new concepts crop up when you push into new areas, the game never forgetting to integrate some interesting applications for your movement options while also bringing in new ideas like a crane you can operate to move objects or a system where you can send power to different areas of the facility. The number of options can be daunting at times and lead to you getting stuck for a bit, but the game also does a good job of never having any pointless objects or interactive points, meaning that you can at least infer that if something is available, it will be relevant eventually, and getting the right tool can soon lead to a wellspring of ideas as the opportunities for puzzle solving suddenly become clear.

journey of roach

THE VERDICT : While it may have a wordless story, Journey of a Roach manages to be an enjoyable point-and-click adventure solely because of its intricate puzzles. The main hubs all do a good job of both limiting your options to things relevant to the current area’s major challenge while still having so many potential interactions that figuring them out requires actually identifying where your inventory, the characters, and environmental objects can work together. It avoids being too obvious with its solutions most of the time and sometimes can be a little obtuse for it, but for the most part, Journey of a Roach does make you feel clever for figuring out its designs that aren’t holding back despite its cute cartoon look and simplistic plot.

And so, I give Journey of a Roach for PC…

journey of roach

A GOOD rating. While crawling on the walls and ceilings could have been enough of a gimmick for some point-and-click developers to sit back and feel like they’ve done enough to diversify their puzzle solving elements, Journey of a Roach builds off of them with an already engaging web of puzzles that keep testing your brain as you work through their many intertwined elements. The small cast of characters and post-apocalyptic world have some appeal despite the game avoiding any written words to tell its tale, but it’s definitely the fully explorable 3D environments that steal the show and the perspective shifting movement options just make these intricate puzzles more detailed and varied. Not every segment of a solution is going to be the best of course, but the satisfying feeling of having a cascade of solutions emerge from one breakthrough moment definitely helps the game remain entertaining even though its roadblocks can sometimes lead to you wandering about in hopes of spotting the one area that will give. Relying purely on the strength of inventory puzzles and basic character interactions means some people will definitely feel the absence of a deeper story or memorable personalities, but there’s still enough character to the world and bug designs that the gameplay has an interesting setting and cast for its backdrop.

Journey of Roach is a game that didn’t deserve to be put off for so long by me. I still can’t tell you to spend anything but the bargain price since it so often hits that level due to frequently being on sale, but if you spot it amidst the crowd of other games going for below a buck on Steam, know that it isn’t there for lack of quality. Perhaps its short playtime or simple story is part of the justification for pricing it so low during the sales, but if you are looking for a point-and-click that can test your problem solving skills without ever getting absurd with its puzzle solutions, Journey of a Roach not only constructs some intricate interconnected ones to work your way through, but it adds that unique wall-crawling angle to the play to make it stand out in a genre which isn’t often known for the strength of its gameplay.

To say I did not like the game would in fact be a lie. I actually had a great time with it (sans the air duct sections). Journey of a Roach is ideal for someone who wants a change of pace in a puzzle game. It is for someone who does not want a complex story line and is looking for an affordable puzzle game for your PC.

Overall, though, the mechanic works great, and fits well with the quirky fun of the game itself. This was a pretty unique and interesting title, and I may find myself playing through again later just to see how it holds up once you know the solutions.

Journey of a Roach's strong ideas loses too many of the conventional adventure game's strengths without gaining enough from them to compensate. It can't even retain the strengths of its setting, quickly jettisoning its post-nuclear scene for a standard flavour of cartoon zaniness. Too many basic lessons on how to treat players go unlearnt. Even over its short duration, initially colourful scenarios become sadly static and tired. Journey of a Roach has some promising ideas, but unfortunately struggles to demonstrate them at their best.

Hardcore Gamer

Journey of a Roach is a bog-standard adventure game built around a single kind of nifty idea. It attempts to ape the style of games like Machinarium, but fails to emulate any of that title's wonderful charm or design sensibilities.

GameWatcher

It tries hard but I'm afraid Journey of a Roach needs a good stomping. Yes, I've been waiting all review to say that.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun

It is, it has to be said, okay. Quite good. Not that bad. Horrid words to give a nice game, but true all the same.

Wot I Think: Journey Of A Roach

Journey Of A Roach came out a couple of weeks back, and is now rather heavily discounted in Steam's sale. Here's wot I think of the peculiar mix of bugs and adventure:

Journey Of A Roach is so close to charming. It's not charming. But it's so close to it. It's part adventure game, part sort-of-platform game, as you control a cockroach exploring an underground bunker in some manner of post-apocalyptic world. Your cockroach, being a cockroach, can walk up walls and onto ceilings, meaning as you approach the 3D levels, you have access to a lot more of them than you'd usually see. When it lets you.

journey of roach

You move about inside the game using WASD, or a controller (both work, but with the keyboard you can also use the mouse to to interact, and proves the better option), running up walls and around rooms, the game rolling the room to keep you 'upright' throughout. But apart from one rather dreadful section, this isn't about dexterity - it's about exploration.

The rules of point-n-click adventures apply here. Gather objects into your inventory, and use them in implausible ways in the environment. And for the most part, it does this pretty well. Yes, it's obscure, but fairly often in the right way, that mad logic way that feels acceptable if you lived through the games of the 90s.

And it looks rather nice too, a hand-painted look to backgrounds, and cute, 3D rotoscopish roaches and other insects within. Things begin with our hero roach finding a growing flower in some soil, and the ensuing excitement sees him and his much beleaguered friend drawn into a strange, ant-controlled underground world, from which they're trying to escape. This means making elaborate disguises, cheating at peculiar games, escaping from traps, and thwarting hapless enemies in all the ways an adventure game should. This is all communicated with words, but instead babbled nonsense sounds (well, I don't speak Insect, but it sounded like nonsense to me), and very lovely little speech bubbles and thought bubbles showing images of what they want to achieve. So far, so quite nice.

journey of roach

The problem is, the game seems to undermine itself at every turn. Despite looking lovely, it insists on coming out of its perfectly capable in-game engine, to display cutscenes in lazy, poorly animated Flash animations. It looks cheap, likely because it was. The main engine clearly and capably handles the characters and animates them nicely, so why it does this so very often can only have been a cut corner.

Then comes the way you interact with the game. Objects you can use get a small floaty triangle by them, but only when you get close enough, and far too much of the game is spent zooming out to cheat/see all that you can use, to prevent pixel hunting. And when that environment might be hiding the thing you can use because you're on the wrong surface, that gets pretty damned annoying.

journey of roach

Worst is the movement. Too often gaps you should clearly be able to crawl through are impassable, or the character will get stuck on the wrong wall, and be a pain to move. Also, you would imagine that with the roach you'd have access to all six walls of a room, but no. The game reasonably does away with the fourth wall, meaning your window into a room remains a window - that's fair. And in some places it puts in obstacles to stop you accessing a wall it's decided you don't need. But so often it hasn't, and there are arbitrary invisible blocks. These invariably force you through obstacles the rest of the game's logic tells you you should be able to walk around, and that always feels crap. It's maddening to find yourself hitting these barriers and not knowing why. It makes the game feel unfinished.

None of these is game-destroying, and it still offers some fun times. I rather liked the fly-gathering puzzles, and the final sequence is silly and entertaining. It's also nice and smart with its audio, and the insectoid chattering is cute. It is, it has to be said, okay. Quite good. Not that bad. Horrid words to give a nice game, but true all the same.

Journey Of A Roach is on Steam , and is currently only £7.20 in the sale.

Pantoja Looking to Clean Out the Division

The champion comes into Saturday's title defense on a five-fight win streak. He hasn't lost a fight in almost four years. During his run with the UFC, Pantoja has faced–and mostly defeated–a who's who in the flyweight division.

Dating back to their time on The Ultimate Fighter Season 24 in 2016, Pantoja has defeated Brandon Moreno three times. He's knocked off Kai Kara France, Wilson Reis, Manel Kape, Brandon Royval (twice), Alex Perez and Matt Schnell. The only flyweights of prominence during Pantoja's era to get the better of him were Deiveson Figueiredo and Askar Askarov. Figueiredo and Askarov scored unanimous decision wins over Pantoja in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

While his time crossed with Demetrious Johnson and Henry Cejudo, Pantoja never fought them.

If Pantoja can emerge victorious against Erceg on Saturday, it will mark his second successful title defense. His first was a hard-fought win over Moreno at UFC 296 in December 2023.

Erceg has experienced one of the fastest rises to a championship opportunity in UFC history. Despite being ranked No. 10 at 125 pounds and having had just three fights in the promotion, Erceg is one win away from being a UFC champion.

The 28-year-old from Australia has beaten David Dvořák and Alessandro Costa unanimously and scored a KO victory over Schnell en route to challenging Pantoja.

If Erceg pulls off the upset, it will be one of the biggest in MMA this year. Pantoja is currently a minus-190 favorite to win.

Jose Aldo’s Last Stand?

The former UFC featherweight champion has come out of retirement to take this fight. He recently confirmed Saturday’s fight is his last on his current contract with the promotion. He was supposed to fight fellow UFC legend Dominick Cruz on this card, but that fight didn’t materialize.

He also wanted to face a top-5 opponent but was not granted his wish. Instead, he will face rising prospect Martinez. The two men had a spirited faceoff on Wednesday, so we may see some fireworks in the co-main event.

Caio Borralho and Michel Pereira are also Brazilian fighters with potential star power. Their bouts against Paul Craig and Ihor Potieria, respectively, could be fights that vault them into main event spots for an upcoming Fight Night.

Be on the lookout for more fight week info leading up to Saturday’s pay-per-view event.

A Mother Apart

Hot Docs is to honor Canadian writer-producer-director Alison Duke with the Don Haig Award, which recognizes “creative vision and entrepreneurship,” as reflected in her work, as well as a track record of mentoring emerging Canadian filmmakers.

The award is presented to a Canadian independent producer with a feature-length film at the festival, with the recipient being selected by a jury of filmmakers.

Duke is the producer of “A Mother Apart,” directed by Laurie Townshend, in which Jamaican American poet and LGBTQ+ activist Staceyann Chin embarks on an international journey to re-imagine the art of mothering—having been abandoned by her own mother as a young child.

Popular on Variety

Duke said: “When my partner, Ngardy Conteh George, and I joined forces to found Oya Media Group in 2018, we did so to bring an authentic perspective to screen-based platforms through socially relevant, life-changing stories that amplify Black experiences. We are deeply connected and inspired by our community, and we recognize that our stories must be told as we strive for the highest caliber of quality and professionalism.”

Duke’s first feature doc, “Raising Kane: A Rapumentary,” won the HBO Award for best documentary at the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City.

Her subsequent feature documentaries included Andrew Nisker’s “Garbage: The Revolution Starts at Home,” Dany Chiasson’s “My Joan of Arc” and Thomas Allen’s “Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photography and the Emergence of a People,” and helmed several social justice films across various genres, including stories about Canadian women living with HIV.

In 2017, she brought together five black female directors to direct documentaries for the Akua Benjamin Legacy Project. This five-part educational series told the story of Black Canadian social justice campaigners such as Dudley Laws, Charles Roach, Marlene Green, Gwen and Lenny Johnson, and Rosie Douglas.

Duke made her dramatic debut with the short film “Promise Me,” which screened at over 30 festivals and earned numerous awards, including Golden Sheafs for direction and scripted for fiction at the 2021 Yorkton Film Festival. In 2021, Duke became the first Black woman to direct a Heritage Minute for Historica Canada on Chloe Cooley.

Duke exec produced Blue Ant Media’s three-part docu-series “Evil by Design: Surviving Nygard” for CBC Docs, which earned her a Canadian Screen Award nomination for best history documentary or series in 2023. Her doc series “Black Community Mixtapes,” which she produced and directed with Conteh George, has been nominated for several Canadian Screen Awards, including best writing and direction for Duke. She recently wrapped a doc series on music industry injustices for Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures.

Duke is a co-producer for “A Mother Apart” with Conteh George and Justine Pilmott of the National Film Board of Canada. She directed and co-produced “Bam Bam: The Story of Sister Nancy” for CRAVE, which is set to have its world premiere at Tribeca in June.

In 2018, Duke kickstarted the OYA Emerging Filmmakers program, an initiative to accelerate the careers of Black youth who are graduates of post-secondary film, video and digital media programs in the Canadian entertainment industry under the OYA Black Arts Coalition non-profit banner.

The award will be presented at the Hot Docs Awards presentation on Friday.
