Culture and customs.

Kenya is one of Africa’s most multicultural countries, with a population as diverse as its terrain. There are more than 40 different ethnic tribes, each with their own language, culture, and customs. The red-robed, beaded Maasai of the south are undoubtedly the most famous tribespeople of the region. The unique Swahili culture dominates the coastal regions and Islam is quite common in the North. Nairobi is home to a large swirl of humanity, with significant Indian, African, and Western populations. As a result, you’re likely to see mosques, churches, and temples, taste international cuisine from all over the world and hear the sounds of Kenyan hip-hop, traditional African drumming, and Western pop.

Depending on where you are in Kenya, the culture and customs vary according to the area you are visiting. The northern and coastal regions tend to be more traditional, while Nairobi, as an international hub of trade and commerce, tends to be more liberal. The Maasai and other tribes typically lead pastoral lives based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Their daily life is based on centuries of tradition and if you get the chance to visit a tribal village, you’ll be able to see the customs of these fascinating people firsthand. Traditional clothing, dance, song, and ceremonies keep this proud culture alive in the face of modernization, which is sweeping through the country.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

As a multiracial society, Kenya has many different cuisines for travelers to try. From traditional Swahili cuisine to Indian, European, and Middle Eastern food, many cultures are represented, especially in large cities like Nairobi. While the average Kenyan lives mostly on maize, beans, and vegetables, tourist areas and large cities offer much more variety for visitors.

Things to eat in Kenya

Kenya’s coastal areas, such as Mombasa and Lamu, are the best places to feast on fresh crab, lobster, oysters, and kingfish cooked to perfection in sumptuous spices.

2. Nyama Choma

One strictly for the carnivores, Nyama Choma is a popular Kenyan style of cooking and eating meat. Goat, beef, and chicken are roasted and served on a communal cutting board, sometimes with condiments such as chili, salt, chopped tomatoes, and avocado.

With a significant population hailing from India, Kenya is a great place to savor spicy curries made with an East African twist.

4. Tropical fruit

For a cheap and cost-effective snack, head to the market stalls that sell a colorful array of tropical fruit. Pineapples, papayas, bananas, and passionfruit are usually plentiful in Kenya. Any fruit that you can peel is a more hygienic, easy option than the one you have to wash.

Geography and environment

Kenya is located in East Africa, sharing borders with   Ethiopia , Somalia, Sudan,   Tanzania   , and   Uganda . With a diverse topography, Kenya has a wide variety of terrain – lofty mountains, dense rainforest, stark plains, and soft-sand beaches.

This diversity also applies to the environments that Kenya’s people live in. Kenya’s crowded capital is a heaving melange of cars, buses, skyscrapers, street stalls, markets, and people; the idyllic Loita Hills is the heart of Maasai country; the national parks run wild with exotic creatures; and rustic Lamu Island is a car-free piece of living history. Overall, most Kenyans either live a fast-paced existence in the modern metropolis of Nairobi or a quieter, agricultural-based life in Kenya’s rural towns and villages.

History and government

Early history.

Recent archaeological findings in Kenya have revealed the remains of one of the earliest species of hominid, placing Kenya among the first places inhabited by humans. Before the arrival of outsiders, Kenya was inhabited by nomadic tribes who most likely entered Kenya from the north. The Maasai and the Kikuyu were the most dominant in numbers, although the Maasai were well known for their reputation as strong warriors who often raided their neighbors.

During the 19th century, Kenya came under the influence of outside cultures due to the arrival of traders from the Middle East and Asia, and settlers and missionaries from Europe. Britain and Germany both had vested interests in Kenya for its abundance of natural resources (especially ivory) and because it was an important point for trade. As such, settlers from Britain, Germany, and other European nations flooded into the country in large numbers, setting up agricultural empires such as coffee plantations. These plantations relied heavily on local tribespeople for labor, much to the resentment of the indigenous populations. As a result of this, a large number of Indian laborers were brought to Kenya to work on plantations and build railroads. This Indian influence is reflected in the current population of Kenya.

Recent history

After much infighting, confrontation, uprising, and reform, Kenya was granted its independence from British colonial rule in 1963. The “Mau Mau Uprising” of the 1950s was responsible for drawing attention to the plight of the African population, and was also the catalyst for the change in how Kenya is governed.

The 1970s saw Kenya’s international economic profile grow due to the successful development of a free-market economy, with agriculture and tourism creating more a more stable economy. More recently, Kenya’s tourism industry has continued to develop and flourish, mainly due to its wealth of exotic animals, national parks, coastal hot-spots and unique cultures. Standards of living have also improved in Kenya, with an overall improvement in life expectancy, infant mortality, and fertility rates – probably due to the increased investment in family planning, education, and health by both the Kenyan government and NGOs. Despite this, many Kenyans still live below the poverty line and struggle to provide the bare necessities for themselves and their children. Regardless of this, travelers will be touched by the generosity of spirit and genuine hospitality that Kenyans display to visitors.

Top 10 wildlife encounters in Kenya

1. cheetah chase.

The cheetah, the Ferrari of the animal kingdom, is the fastest land animal on the planet. This slick predator can reach speeds of up to 120 km/hr and can accelerate to 103km/hr in just three seconds. Seeing a cheetah stealthily stalk, then pursue, a gazelle, springbok or an impala is a thrilling sight.

Spot the speedy cheetah on our 7 day Premium Kenya adventure.

2. Lioness kill

See the circle of life play out in Masai Mara National Reserve. Lions might be the kings of the jungle, but in Kenya, it's the lionesses that do the hunting. Working in groups, these big cats track down prey such as wildebeest, impalas, zebras and buffalo. If you are lucky, you will see a kill - the lionesses hunting together, encircling a herd then targeting the closest animal. The attack is swift and powerful - an experience you will never forget!

Watch the lioness in her natural habitat on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Tanzania tour.

3. Wildebeest migration

The annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeest across the grassy plains of Eastern Africa is an extraordinary spectacle of nature. The wildebeests risk drowning in rivers and attacks from big cats and crocodiles, to travel nearly 2,000 km in search of food and water. Around 200,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle also join this boisterous group each year, making it one of the greatest shows on earth.

Witness the wildebeest migration on our 8 day Kenya Wildlife Safari.

4. Sea of flamingos

See Lake Nakuru turn a shimmering sea of pink as millions of flamingos flock to feed in the shallow waters. The sheer amount of these long-legged creatures - among 400 species of birds that inhabit the area - is an incredible sight.

Marvel at flamingos on our 15 day Masai Heartlands adventure.

5. Elephant bath time

Elephants love water and, despite their size, they are excellent swimmers. To cool off from the scorching African sun, they splash about in lakes, paddle in rivers and give themselves a shower using their trunks. Witnessing these gentle giants having a bath is a truly memorable experience, but don't stand too close or you'll likely get very wet.

Catch a spray from elephants on our 13 day Premium Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya tour.

6. Rhino love

A baby rhino stays by its mother's side for up to five years after it is born and, during this time, mom is extremely protective of her calf. With an adult white rhino weighing up to 3,600 kg and reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h when charging, you don't want to get between a mother rhino and her baby. The best place for spotting the rare black rhino is Kenya's Aberdare National Park.

Snap some photos of these fascinating creatures on our 15 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa Highlights tour.

7. Giraffe parade

It's the classic African image – giraffes striding across the African savanna at sunset, nibbling on acacia trees and carving a graceful silhouette on the orange-tinged skyline. Kenya has the biggest giraffe population on the continent, so a dusk safari to see these unique creatures is a must.

Look up at Kenya's giraffe population on our 8 day Kenya Family Safari.

8. Hippos wallowing

One of Africa's best locations for hippo spotting is Lake Naivasha. Here, you can see large pods of these mighty animals submerged in the water and wallowing in mud. More than just social interaction, the water helps them cool down and protects their skin from drying out. With the exception of feeding, hippos spend most of their lives in the water - from childbirth and reproduction to fighting with other hippos - so it's very likely you'll see them playing in their aquatic playground.

Watch hippos playing in the water on our 31 day Premium Kenya & Southern Africa In Depth tour.

9. Zebra crossing

For many, the highlight of the annual zebra migration is hundreds of thousands of these black-and-white-striped animals making the death-defying dash across the Mara River. Vulnerable to massive crocodiles lying in wait for a tasty meal, the zebras don't waste any time once they decide to take the plunge.

Admire these majestic animals on our 20 day Best of East Africa tour.

10. Monkey business

That chatter from the treetops above is most likely from cheeky colobus monkeys. As these creatures spend nearly all of their lives in the forest canopy, your best chance of spotting them is as they dart through the trees, a flurry of black and white fur. Treating branches like trampolines, they leap high into the air, then drop downward, using the long hair on their shoulders like a parachute. Listen out for males, whose croaking roars can often be heard resonating throughout the forest.

Point out swinging monkeys on one of our safari tours in Kenya.

From the large, lively markets of Nairobi to the small, slow-paced markets of the villages, shopping in Kenya is definitely "market-centric". Nairobi and other large cities have a range of boutiques and malls but, as in most other African countries, the buzzing markets are some of the best places to shop, eat and mingle with locals.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand for example have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Kenya

1. Handicrafts

The wood and soapstone carvings in Kenya are of great quality. Peruse the carvings at city markets and shops, or alternatively, buy direct from artisans in countryside villages.

2. Maasai jewellery

The colorful beaded creations of the Maasai make excellent souvenirs. Wear them as a bold, statement piece, or hang them on walls at home as a unique reminder of your time in Kenya.

Kenyan markets are full of vibrant fabric sarongs and wraps (also known as kikoys or kangas). Put these on your shopping list as they offer great protection from the African sun.

4. Kenyan music

Reggae, afro-rap, and African hip-hop are popular (especially in Kenya’s big cities), so stock up on some local music to bring a bit of Kenyan rhythm home with you.

Festival and events

Jamhuri day.

Feasts, speeches, parades, music, and dance all feature in this national holiday commemorating Kenya’s independence and the establishment of its republic. A mass celebration of freedom and unity, this is a big day for all Kenyan people. The day is celebrated on 12th December each year.

The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed turns Kenya’s Lamu Island from a sleepy village into a busy hub of activity. Pilgrims and visitors flock here for four days of devotional prayers and reverence, concluding with fun events such as donkey races, dhow sailing, traditional dance, and drumming.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination with many drawcards depending on the activities you want to do, the animals you'd like to see and the type of weather you'd prefer to experience.

Most safari destinations are at their best during the dry season from June to October or December to March when it's not too hot, rainfall is low and vegetation is thinner (making it easier to view wildlife). These periods coincide with the high tourist season, particularly in December and January, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation rates.

Do I need a visa to travel to Kenya?

Most nationalities – except 43 exempt nationalities including the Bahamas, Cyprus, South Africa , Malaysia, Singapore, Tanzania and  Zimbabwe  – require a visa to enter Kenya for travel, business or transit purposes. Check the official eligibility list for more information.

You must obtain a visa before you travel as visas on arrival are not available. The good news is that the process is fairly quick and easy and most nationalities can apply online.

The e-visa takes around three working days to process, but you should apply two weeks prior to travel to be on the safe side.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Kenya?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Kenya but a little generosity will be received positively, especially considering the low wages that Kenyan service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Kenya?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Kenya’s large cities but should expect limited or no access in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Kenya?

Cell phone coverage is good in Kenya’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your mobile phone.

What are the toilets like in Kenya?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Kenya, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Street food (plate of stew) = 300-500 KES
  • Bottle of beer in a local bar = 250-500 KES
  • Food court or fast-food meal = 500-700 KES
  • Meal at a sit-down restaurant = 4000+ KES

Can I drink the water in Kenya?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Kenya. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Kenya?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Kenya?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and tourist areas like Nairobi and Mombasa but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Kenya?

  • 1 Jan New Year's Day
  • 2 Jan New Year Holiday
  • Good Friday*
  • Easter Monday*
  • 1 May-Labour Day
  • 1 Jun Madaraka Day / National Day

  • 20 Oct Mashujaa Day
  • 12 Dec Jamhuri Day
  • 25 Dec Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec Boxing Day

Please note, Kenya public holidays may vary.

What should I pack for Kenya?

Kenyans dress conservatively so it's important that you do the same to respect the local culture and customs. Dressing conservatively doesn't mean you need to cover yourself from head to toe, but you should wear long, loose-fitting clothing that covers your knees, shoulders, midriff and chest. Long layers are also more effective in keeping you cool and protecting your skin from the sun and insects.

You'll need a sturdy pair of walking shoes, long and loose-fitting layers (think knee-length shorts, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, etc), a pair of sandals, a warm fleece, sun-protective gear (sunglasses, a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunscreen), and insect repellent. You'll also need a reusable water bottle, a day bag and maybe a headlamp if you're camping.

Is Kenya LGBTQIA+ friendly?

LGBTQIA+ travelers who want to visit Kenya should exercise caution and avoid engaging in public displays of affection. That said, even public displays of affection for hetero couples can raise eyebrows.

Homosexuality is still illegal in Kenya and can be punishable by prison time. The criminalization of same-sex relationships was acquired from Britain before Kenya was granted independence in 1963 and has not been reviewed since.

Kenyan society is largely conservative and identifying as LGBTQIA+ is often considered to be a taboo. There are also no laws to protect LGBTQIA+ people against discrimination.

Is Kenya accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

So grab your gear and let’s get started with other safari lovers on this dynamic value-based journey.

What’s Cool About the Masai Mara?

For 3 intense days, we will bring you close to all the big game in one of the richest eco-systems in the region. The Masai Mara is known as the home of Africa’s “Big Five” – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. But it is also home to the Great Migration . Picture thousands of wildebeests and zebras, crossing into the park on their yearly trek – a veritable train of wildlife herding over the hills, brushing past the acacia trees, on their search for sustenance.

As they march on, their natural predators stalk them in the dramatic ebb and flow of the natural world. It is a sight you won’t soon forget.

On your tour, you’ll have time for some optional discoveries as well – experience a cultural encounter with the Maasai people in their nearby village. Take a hot air balloon safari over the park for a truly amazing perspective.

Your 3 days exploring this great park will be filled with sights and memories few ever get to know.

Full-Day of Game Drives

Welcome to safari time – we’ll get up early to view the first golden light and the stirrings of the park’s wildlife. Today, we’ll enjoy maximum viewing with unlimited game drives across the vast savannahs.

We’ll be tracking the big cats along with elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and the other 95 mammals found in this world-famous park.

If you’re here during the Great Migration (July – October), you’ll encounter the most fantastic movement of animals on our planet. Thousands of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest cross into the park over the Mara River on their timeless parade searching for taller grasses to consume.

The river is also home to pods of hippos and waiting crocodiles, eyeing the vast herds crossing into their territory.

If you would like to add a cultural aspect to your Masai Mara safari, tell your driver/guide to arrange a visit with the Maasai people in their local village. This optional experience will allow you to learn about these native people and see their homes up close.

For the most unique safari experience in the world, sign up for the optional early morning hot air balloon ride over the Mara. Watch the rising sun break over the park, lighting up the fields and the wildlife below. Your driver/guide can make all the arrangements.

Masai Mara National Park - Nairobi

Let’s start our last safari day with an early game drive. We’ll look for favorite wildlife or any you still need to check off your wish list.

If you haven’t already spotted cheetah, keep an eye out for them moving stealthily in the bush, along with jackal and hyena.

Breakfast will follow and then one more game drive through the park as we head back to Nairobi.

We’ll stop for lunch on the way to the city, along with other rest stops.

The drive will give you plenty of time to dwell on and talk about your 3 days of Masai Mara adventure.

We will be back in Nairobi in the late afternoon and bring you to your hotel, the airport, or place of your choosing.

Now you’ve got the pictures, memories, and stories to tell. We hope you had fun and a good taste of the safari adventure. It’s been our pleasure to show you the Masai Mara. A big thanks from all of us at Africa Kenya Safaris!

kenya safari group tour

Hujambo! Welcome to Kenya! Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), you’ll be given a VIP welcome as you’re escorted through immigration and transferred to your stylish Nairobi hotel, Fairmont The Norfolk.

The remainder of the day is yours to spend exploring this exciting city. Nairobi is famed for its unique cafe culture, the Nairobi National Museum, and the wild lions and buffalo that roam in Nairobi National Park, just 30 minutes from the city centre. In the evening, return to your stunning hotel and rest up before your adventure begins in earnest tomorrow.

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before a full day of exploration around Kenya’s capital.

Visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, one of the oldest wildlife charities in Africa, and hear how the charity works to rescue and rehabilitate elephants. Take a lunch break at the beautiful Tamarind Brasserie garden restaurant, then head over to the stately Karen Blixen Museum. Wander the colonial house and grounds at the foot of the Ngong Hills, discovering the setting for ‘Out of Africa’ – a highly acclaimed memoir by Danish author Karen Blixen, later adapted into an award-winning film.

Later, encounter one of Africa's best-loved animals at the Giraffe Centre. Ascend feeding platforms to come eye-to-eye with these gentle giants, or take a stroll through their habitat, established to protect the vulnerable giraffe population.

Early this morning, you will be briefed on the exciting safari tours ahead before being whisked away to the magnificent Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club resort. Set in sprawling landscaped gardens with majestic views of Mount Kenya, this spectacular stay is yours to enjoy for three nights of total luxury. Once you’ve checked in, spend the afternoon at leisure, reclining by the pool or signing up for one of the hotel’s optional activities.

Board your safari vehicle this morning and travel to the privately owned Solio Lodge, where the Solio Game Reserve hosts a robust population of white rhinos. Groups of these imposing creatures wander the grassy plains in the company of black rhinos, buffalo, zebra and more.

Tuck into a picnic lunch so you don’t miss a moment of your exhilarating game drive. In the late afternoon, head back to your hotel for a sumptuous dinner and time to relax in supreme comfort in your Fairmont Room.

Continue your wildlife-spotting quest with a trip to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, known for its dedication to rehabilitating animals rescued from the black market. The conservancy also hosts the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where visitors can see this curious primate.

Enjoy a full day of wildlife appreciation before returning in the early evening to your opulent accommodation. Savour your final mouth-watering dinner at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club resort, then retire to your well-appointed room for the rest of your night.

After a delicious breakfast, you'll board a light aircraft for your included flight from the Nanyuki Airstrip to the Ngerende Airstrip at the border of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, followed by a 15-minute drive to the Fairmont Mara Safari Camp for a three-night, all-inclusive stay. This intimate property is home to just a small collection of luxury tents and offers a true safari experience, elevated by the perfect balance of comfort and adventure. Unfold the floor-to-ceiling canvas doors to reveal magnificent views of the hippo- and crocodile-filled Mara River from your private deck.

In the afternoon, join a shared safari into the stunning Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy for the chance to glimpse Kenya’s most exciting wildlife.

Please Note:

  • Regional flights have a limited capacity and as such require passengers weighing 100kg or more to book a second seat.

Make the most of your exclusive safari lodge location as you take shared morning and afternoon game drives through the Ol Choro Oiroua Conservancy, bordering the beloved Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Seek out the Big Five safari animals, from the proud lion to the sleek leopard, the imposing African bush elephant to the hardy African buffalo, as well as hundreds of species of bright and beautiful birds. Keep watch for elegant gazelle, a hippo peering from the water, or crocodiles sunbathing on the riverbanks. Spend the rest of your time relaxing in your safari tent and soaking up unparalleled views, savouring all-inclusive dining and jaw-dropping after-dinner stargazing.

For those seeking a higher vantage point, you may opt to join an early morning hot air balloon flight, floating gently over the plains of the Maasai Mara as the warm sun slowly rises.

Optional activities:

  • Hot air balloon ride (from A$915 per person. Seasonal surcharges apply).

Enjoy another full day of game drives as you set off into the wondrous wilds of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Stop along the way for an atmospheric picnic lunch, then dive back into the abundant wildlife spotting of this expansive park. Return to camp this evening for a final night of delectable dining.

Bid farewell to Fairmont Mara Safari Camp after breakfast as you are transferred to the airstrip for your included flight back to Nairobi. Satiate your cravings at the open-air Carnivore Restaurant with an included lunch, then relax at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in a comfortable dayroom until your departing flight. Your final transfer will be to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), where your grand Kenyan voyage concludes.

Small Group Safaris Kenya

Kenya is one Africa’s finest gems, showcasing a massive array of diverse wildlife. Through African Overland Tours, you can choose from a range of accommodated safaris and tours of Kenya that allow you to personally experience this incredible country.

When it comes to spotting wildlife, Kenya is renowned for offering its travellers some of the most phenomenal game-viewing opportunities in the world. It is in this magnificent region that you can also find one of the most popular game parks in the world – the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Head out on one of the shorter budget Kenya safaris that last for around four days, allowing you time to explore the Masai Mara in search of Africa’s Big Five, as well as stand witness to the marvellous Lake Nakuru, where thousands of flamingos gather to form a pink fringe around the water’s edge. You could also choose to extend your stay in Kenya through various longer overland packages and tours that stretch across several different countries, some of which include the experience of a lifetime in the form of an awe-inspiring gorilla safari in Uganda.

Perhaps one of the greatest things about East Africa is that it never has an ‘off-season’. Instead, exquisite opportunities for game-viewing are abundantly available throughout the entire year.  When booking you Kenyan safari, however, keep in mind that there a particular buzz during the dry season, which runs from May throughout August.

If you plan on experiencing an adventure safari, take full advantage of the phenomenon of the country and plan your trip during the happening of the Great Migration, which typically runs from July through to October. During this breath-taking spectacle, millions of animals – from wildebeest to gazelles, a variety of other buck, and zebra – embark on an epic adventure, traveling from the renowned Serengeti National Park in Tanzania towards the greener pastures of the Masai Mara. This event is now deemed one of the world’s Seven New Wonders, and has been become known as the World Cup of Wildlife.

Safari tours through Kenya allow for plenty of animal-spotting opportunities, from crocodiles patiently waiting to strike as the animals cross deep rivers, to big cats excitedly chasing down prey on vast, open land. Visit Lake Naivasha where you are bound to be introduced to plenty of pelican, herons, and cormorants (among others), as well as perhaps an African Fish Eagle if luck is on your side!

As with all of our safaris, you have the choice of cheap, budget safaris, or comfort options – where you will stay in top lodges, hotels and chalets. However, no matter what your choice, a tour through Kenya will leave your soul feeling rejuvenated, and your heart with a longing to soon return to the Motherland.  From the thriving city of Nairobi to the stunning Great Rift Valley, Kenya will leave you astounded and breathless.

To start planning your adventure, contact one of our consultants now, or browse through our range of Kenyan safari packages online at your own leisure.

There are a wide range of different types of safari packages in Kenya to choose from. These safari tours and packages do not solely cover Kenya. These include:

• Overland tour packages in Kenya • Kenya Adventure safari tours • Kenya budget safaris • Kenya Camping safaris • Kenya Tours from Johannesburg • Kenya Tours from Cape Town • Kenya Tours from Victoria Falls • Kenya Tours from Nairobi

9-Day Small Group Tour Kenya Safari and Beach

Sun, Sea, Sand, and Safari…….

This 8-night small group tour Kenya offers the perfect opportunity to experience two of the country’s most beautiful national parks as well as having the opportunity to relax for 4 nights surrounded by the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of Diani Beach.

Amboseli is a Big 5 National Park that is famous for its ‘big tusker’ elephants and the spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro that act as a backdrop to the park on clear days. You will have 2 nights here offering plenty of opportunities to go in search of the abundant wildlife in this stunning area of Kenya.

Tsavo West is one of the lesser visited parks in Kenya, offering a more remote safari. Whilst it can be a little harder to spot animals here as the animals are more widely dispersed in their natural habitat, the Big 5 is here making the thrill of the game drive exciting as you just never know what you might see.

5 Days Mount Kenya Circumnavigation Trek Using Sirimon Chogoria Routes

We were delighted with our Mount Kenya 5 day package. John’s communication was brilliant from our first contact and he was happy to answer any questions. Our guide Michael and the wonderful team of porters were outstanding-experienced, friendly and professional, tailoring the hike to our needs. The food in particular was spectacular. Overall the excursion of a lifetime and great value too-we would not hesitate to recommend this hike.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

Good day. We would like to express gratitude the SCS Company, represented by John and Simon, for a fantastically prepared and conducted nine-days safari in August 2021 on Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Amboseli, Tsavo West, Tsavo East National parks! The guys are really professionals in their field! Simon is an excellent guide and a professional driver! He is very friendly, polite and punctual. He knows national parks perfectly well and masterfully finds and notices wild animals. We are also very grateful for the stories and providing information about animals and birds, as well as about the country and Africa as a whole! It was very nice to explore the parks and watch the wild world with you! We saw all the animals from the “Big five” and not only, many stunning bird species, indescribable views and landscapes of African nature, fantastic sunsets and sunrises, stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

6 Day Kenya Cultural Safari

After seeing the Best Ever Food Tour visit at the Maasai Mara village in Amboseli, I was inspired to go! I contacted Emmanuel and he was instantly a wealth of knowledge. We communicated often about my trip so much that by the time we met, I felt as if I were amongst friends. Along with Emmanuel was Carlos Roy, our driver. Carlos and Emmanuel were incredibly knowledgeable about the Maasai people, the area and could answer all of my questions. Carlos is by far the best driver. He is considerate and has a great sense of humor. You definitely won't be bored as he introduces you to the "African massage"! On the tour, Emmanuel was able to translate my questions, arrange a time for me to personally interview the elder and much more! This tour was hands down one of my favorite experiences during my entire trip. I've been to another Maasai village and this by far was the most authentic. I felt as if I was truly able to experience the culture as well as gain an appreciation for their desire to keep up with today's technology while preserving their traditions and norms. I'm so glad I did this tour with Emmanuel and Carolos. I am a travel advisor and my goal is to send my clients seeking an authentic experience to tour with Emmanuel and Carlos in the future. My one piece of advice would be not to wait, book today because this is a really popular tour!!!

I took a solo safari and got the best of all worlds

“Hold on tight, everyone,” warned our guide, David, putting down his walkie-talkie and signalling to our driver, Michael, to hit the accelerator. “I just got a tip about a sighting!”

The vehicle filled with gasps. After only a day on safari, we’d already seen a pride of lions stalk a zebra, a family of hippos sunbathing, and a group of hyenas fight over antelope leftovers; it was difficult to imagine what new wonder Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve could possibly conjure up.

We sped off – momentarily delayed as we carefully dodged a hyena soaking itself in a waterlogged pothole, and then waited as a herd of zebras crossed the road ahead (I was already learning that patience is an essential virtue on safari) – and at last arrived at a solitary tree with long, thick branches drooping over a small pond.

“And here it is,” David announced, beaming and making a sweeping gesture with his hand. Plaintive cries of “What? What? We can’t see anything” arose, but David simply smiled and pointed to the tree’s lowest branch. Our gaze eagerly alighted on a golden patchwork of dark spots, and there was a collective intake of breath.

Draped along the length of the branch, its head resting on one massive paw, was a leopard, one of the most coveted (and elusive) of Africa’s Big Five. The big cat slowly turned its head to give us a single insouciant stare and then promptly went to sleep. You could have heard a pin drop.

It was just another once-in-a-lifetime moment on a journey filled with indelible encounters. And yet, in a land with seemingly endless surprises up its sleeve, the most striking of them all remained – for me – just how profoundly my decision to travel to Africa on my own and join a group of strangers on safari was paying off.

I’d opted to take the plunge a few months previously, when attempting to arrange this epic expedition with a group of friends soon revealed that their enthusiasm far exceeded their availability. I had always heard of people going on safari as a family, or with a group of friends, or as a romantic couple’s experience. But visiting Kenya had long been a dream, and though I’d never travelled alone before, I refused to give up. A safari for one it would have to be.

I began to plan my solo adventure, but soon started to feel overwhelmed. It was turning out to be more adventurous than I had expected, and I hadn’t realised how expensive getting around the country and hiring a private safari guide and vehicle would be. I decided there had to be a better way, and then, one day, there it was – a small group safari tour.

Not only would this mean that I could trust the typically headache-inducing aspects of a trip – devising an itinerary, arranging transportation and moving between lodges – to a professional, but it also guaranteed that I’d have support if anything went wrong. Best of all, joining a group tour meant I could travel alone, while still enjoying the company of others. I would have my own room and spend my free time as I liked. Game drives would be with a group of like-minded adventurers, and back at the lodge we could relive the day’s key sightings together over meals and drinks.

It sounded ideal, though as the trip drew near, I began to worry. Animal sightings on a safari can never be guaranteed – what if we didn’t see anything? What if, come evening, we had nothing to talk about?

I needn’t have worried. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, with its kaleidoscope of wildlife and dramatic landscape of golden-green savannah, generated a never-ending stream of moments ripe for discussion. It was during these conversations back at the lodge – over meals of freshly caught tilapia, chapati bread and Tusker beer – that I came to realise my human companions were as much an essential part of the trip as the animals. Seeing a leopard or a lion would have been an incredible experience on my own, but somehow the joy and awe of each sighting seemed magnified in the company of others who were equally awestruck.

Each member of my group had been drawn to Africa for a different reason: an inheritance from a beloved mother was what had finally made it possible for a family of four from Edmonton, Canada, to realise their dream of going to Africa. Nancy, a marketing director from the UK, had signed up for the tour with her friend John the day she was finally declared cancer-free. A couple from New Zealand had decided to reject the anxiety they were feeling about turning 50 by grabbing life with both hands on a true adventure. Knowing the magnitude of the trip’s meaning for them somehow gave it an added emotional weight I hadn’t anticipated.

The same was true of our driver, Michael, and guide, David, who clearly took great pride in introducing visitors to their country and culture. As Michael navigated skilfully from one animal sighting to the next, he’d patiently answer questions about his Maasai heritage and speak candidly about his struggles to ensure his young daughters got the best education possible. Over dinner, David would bring Kenya’s rich history to life, passionately describing the country’s struggles to overcome tribal divisions and attain lasting political and economic stability.

“I know how special my country is and that’s why I wanted to work with tourists,” David explained one night while we drank sundowners in the shade of a tall desert date tree. “I’m lucky that I get to see people fall under Kenya’s spell, and I know that even when visitors go back home, a part of their heart will always be here.”

David was right. Kenya will always have a piece of my heart, as will the members of my tour group, whose camaraderie and enthusiasm helped make my first solo trip such a success, and taught me so much – including that, sometimes, the best way to travel alone is with others.
