Cruise ship still docked in San Francisco after hitting pier

Ruby Princess' estimated departure is now Sunday, according to officials.

The Ruby Princess cruise ship that startled sleeping San Francisco residents Thursday morning when it collided with a pier while docking won't likely depart until Sunday, officials said.

"Repairs are underway and our technical experts estimate that repairs are likely to take upwards of 24 hours," said Princess Cruises on Friday, giving an estimated departure time of Sunday at 4 p.m. PT.

The ship was returning from a 10-day cruise to Alaska, which had 3,328 guests and 1,159 crew members on board, none of whom were injured and all safely deboarded, according to Princess Cruises.

The damage done to the vessel did not slow down new passengers from boarding at 4 p.m. PT, set to embark on the next 10-day cruise. As of Friday afternoon, 4 p.m. locally, the ship was still docked, according to a live shot from ABC affiliate KGO.

Following an inspection from the U.S. Coast Guard, Ruby Princess will be cleared to sail once all damage from Thursday has been fully repaired, according to the cruise line.

Ruby Princess leaves SF for Alaska 4 days after crash at Pier 27, nearly 600 passengers fewer

The ship has been sitting at Pier 27 in San Francisco since colliding with the dock Thursday morning.

KGO logo

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- After colliding with the dock and sitting at Pier 27 in San Francisco since Thursday, the Ruby Princess cruise ship finally embarked on its journey to Alaska.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Sunday morning repairs to the Ruby Princess have been completed and the cruise ship is "free to depart" for Alaska.

The coast guard said it lifted the Captain of the Port order at 1 a.m. Sunday.

Now, the cruise line said it was expected to depart the Bay Area at 2:30 p.m. Our ABC7 cameras saw the Princess ship move around 3:40 p.m.

latest news of cruise ship accident

Passengers had until 11 a.m. to decide whether they will stay on the ship to to continue the trip or leave.

Cruise passenger Anita Lawhon from Reno captured the moment the Ruby Princess finally set sail from San Francisco Sunday afternoon, she thought her "bon voyage" would never happen.

"Who would've thought we'd be sitting here in San Francisco for four days? I'm so excited go out toward the Golden Gate for the first time in my life, exciting," said Lawhon.

The ship's captain told passengers the green light was given overnight to sail.

"Actually, I just walked down because I wanted to see the state of repairs and was pleasantly surprised it looks great to me," said passenger Alexandra Shannon.

In a statement, the cruise line said, "Princess Cruises can confirm that repairs on Ruby Princess have been completed, and following inspection and certification by the United States Coast Guard the ship is safe and fit to sail."

"I got off the ship I decided to take the deal they offered," said Simon from Rio Vista, who declined to give his last name.

Ruby Princess had 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard. Now, they are departing with 2,677 guests and 1,161 crew onboard. A difference of 579 passengers.

The delayed 10-day sailing will now be a 7-day cruise returning to San Francisco on Sunday, July 16.

"The Ruby Princess is about 950 feet long and about 115,000-tons," Captain Allan Post with the Texas A &M Maritime Academy pointed out. "With that much weight and that much sail area, the vessel is affected by wind, by current, and by the technical abilities of its design," he said on Friday as repairs were being made.

On Friday, ABC7 saw crews from the Port of San Francisco and Coast Guard inspecting the hole in the vessel and repairs which have been done so far.

"Our main concern is the vessel able to transport passengers and operate safety," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Levi Read on Friday.

Passengers who boarded the ship Thursday have been asked to stay on board and not come ashore. Originally, there were 3,256 guests and 1,161 crew onboard as the ship remains docked at Pier 27.

Princess Cruises says guests who elect to cancel their cruise will receive a 100% refund of their cruise fare, post-cruise hotel packages and transfers booked through Princess, prepaid shore excursions and other prepaid items and taxes, fees and port expenses. Each guest will also receive a 50% Future Cruise Credit of the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025. They may remain onboard until 1100 local time on Sunday, July 9 to better assist with alternative plans they may be making.

Guests who continue with their Princess vacation will receive a 75% refund of the cruise fare paid as well as unused pre-paid shore excursions booked through Princess and the refundable portion of the taxes, fees and port expenses for the missed ports. Each guest will also receive a 75% Future Cruise Credit equal to the cruise fare paid on this voyage, which may be applied to any future Princess cruise that is booked by February 1, 2024 and sails by February 1, 2025.

Investigation into the bar pilot

We learned more about the Ruby Princess pilot. In some ways, this is an elite group. There aren't many bar pilots, 52 at the moment with four trainees in the pipeline according to the Board of Pilot Commissioners Executive Director.

The investigation into what went wrong with the Ruby Princess during docking at San Francisco's Pier 27 Thursday morning is in the early fact-finding phase.

"It appears the port quarter of the Ruby Princess made contact with Pier 27," said U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander William Williams.

The Coast Guard which is assisting in the investigation says the pilot is being drug and alcohol tested which is standard in a serious marine incident.

"The Coast Guard has sent two teams, an investigations team and an inspection port state control team to the vessel and will be conducting those inspections and investigations," said Williams.

latest news of cruise ship accident

The San Francisco Bar Pilots are responsible for safely navigating ships they board over the offshore sand bar to docks throughout the Bay Area.

A Spokesperson working with the San Francisco Bar Pilots told ABC7 News on Thursday, "We can confirm a pilot was involved in a hard landing at Pier 27 this morning. We are cooperating with all necessary agencies in looking into this matter and cannot comment further."

The Board of Pilot Commissioners tells ABC7 News the pilot is on the Pilot Evaluation Committee which is responsible for trainees and that anyone on that committee would have to be a pilot more than 10 years.

The investigation is now in the hands of the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agencies who were notified about the early morning incident.

Coast Guard authorizes PortMiami to reopen to marine traffic after vessel collision

Portrait of Nathan Diller

The U.S. Coast Guard has given PortMiami approval to reopen to marine traffic after it was shut down Sunday, following a collision between two vessels that killed one person.

The Coast Guard received a call that a yacht had collided with a ferry vessel Pelican II around 4 to 5 a.m., according to spokesperson Ryan Estrada. By the time Coast Guard personnel arrived, the City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue had rescued one person and recovered one body, he said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was investigating and working to remove the yacht, which sank, Estrada said. “The Pelican II reported no damage, and we set up a security perimeter around Government Cut, essentially closing down the Port of Miami,” he said.

The Coast Guard authorized the port to reopen to all vessel traffic by around 2:30 p.m. "Crews have successfully recovered the sunken vessel & removed the obstruction in the North channel," the Coast Guard tweeted .

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The closure impacted cruise passengers on board Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Escape, and MSC Seascape , PortMiami said on Twitter . “For more information, Carnival passengers can sign up for text alerts by texting CCL3 to CRUISE (278473); MSC (833) 578-6488 and NCL (866) 234-7350),” the port said.

Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli said the incident would impact guests’ debarkation and “the embarkation of the next voyages.”

“We have been in direct contact with our guests and will continue to provide them updates as we learn more information from port officials,” he said in an emailed statement. Norwegian and MSC did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

12-year-old dies in fall from balcony on Royal Caribbean cruise ship

The FBI is investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy who plummeted from a balcony to a lower deck on a Royal Caribbean ship returning to Galveston, Tex., the agency said.

The incident occurred Saturday night aboard the Harmony of the Seas on the last night of a seven-day western-Caribbean cruise that had stopped in Honduras and Mexico, the cruise company said. Cruise tracking site CruiseMapper showed that the ship returned to port Sunday and left for its current western-Caribbean voyage the same day.

Circumstances surrounding the boy’s death were still not clear Wednesday. Multiple news outlets have reported that the boy fell from a balcony that overlooks the inner part of the vessel and landed in the Central Park area of the ship, which is lined with trees, plants, restaurants and shops.

Railings on cruise ships must be at least 42 inches tall, under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act that passed in 2010.

The FBI confirmed that it was investigating the incident but declined to release additional details. The agency, which said it is “the primary federal agency authorized to investigate potential crimes on the high seas,” was coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.

Royal Caribbean released little information.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests,” the cruise company said in a statement. “Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world, according to the Royal Caribbean website. It has 18 decks and can hold a maximum of 6,687 guests in 2,747 staterooms. It is divided into seven “neighborhoods,” including a boardwalk, promenade, pool and sports zone, youth area and the Central Park section where the boy fell.

The ship was the scene of another young passenger’s death in 2019, when a 16-year-old slipped and fell while trying to access his room from an adjacent balcony, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported at the time. Royal Caribbean called that incident a “tragic accident.”

Falls from cruise ships are uncommon, though multiple people go overboard every year, according to data compiled by cruise industry researcher Ross Klein. He has tracked reports of at least 386 people who reportedly went overboard between 2000 and 2020, The Washington Post reported last year.

Attorney Spencer Aronfeld, who sues cruise lines, said in a TikTok video that he received multiple messages from passengers on the ship with theories about what happened in Saturday’s fall.

In a message to The Washington Post, he said that in his 35 years of experience, he has found that it would be “extremely unlikely” to simply fall over a balcony railing.

“The majority of railing cases I’ve investigated deal with intoxicated passengers sitting in the railings or leaning over the railings or intentionally going over,” he wrote.

The ship can hold more than 5,000 passengers

A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life after falling from the 14th-floor balcony of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship on the last night of his voyage.

The young boy is thought to have been playing with new friends he made on board when he accidentally fell over the railings of the Harmony of the Seas.

Onlookers onboard were horrified as they witnessed the youngster fall over the railing.

Witnesses report that he fell from his family's cabin on Deck 14 into the ship's internal Central Park area, which houses a variety of bars, restaurants, and pubs, on Deck 8.

Crew members attempted to revive the young boy, but he sadly died before the ship reached its docking point at Galveston, Texas on Sunday. It is believed he was on the cruise with his family to celebrate a birthday.

There are waterslides and a zip-line on board

Passengers waiting to embark on the ship for its next journey from Galveston were informed of a delay due to an ongoing investigation.

Royal Caribbean confirmed the death of a passenger but has not released any further details about the incident or the family involved.

FBI investigating death of 12-year-old boy who fell from balcony of cruise ship

FBI investigating death of 12-year-old boy who fell from balcony of cruise ship

This was the second boy who died on the royal caribbean cruise ship in recent years..

A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from the balcony of a Royal Caribbean   cruise ship .

Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas was on a seven-day cruise in the western Caribbean with stops in Honduras and Mexico.

'We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests.'

On Saturday, the ship was en route to Galveston, Texas .

On the last night of the cruise, a 12-year-old boy plummeted to his death after falling from a balcony.

According to People magazine , the boy fell from the ship's "Central Park" neighborhood — an open area in the ship's interior on the 8th deck — which includes bars, restaurants, shops, and more than 10,000 plants and flowers.

The FBI confirmed that it was investigating the incident, according to the Washington Post , noting that it's “the primary federal agency authorized to investigate potential crimes on the high seas,” and was coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.

Royal Caribbean released a statement on the boy's death: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

The FBI and Royal Caribbean did not reveal the circumstances of how the boy fell from the balcony.

The Harmony of the Seas cruise ship docked in Galveston at 7 a.m. Sunday, according to cruise tracking site CruiseMapper .

In 2019, a 16-year-old boy fell to his death while attempting to climb into his room from the balcony of the Harmony of the Seas ship. The teen was on the eighth floor, according to the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office. The teen reportedly fell and landed on a pier after attempting to climb into his room from a nearby balcony because he forgot his room key.

Under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act that was passed in 2010, railings on cruise ships must be at least 42 inches tall.

Harmony of the Seas was first launched in 2016 and has 18 decks and a maximum capacity of 6,687.

Between 1995 and 2024, there were 416 people who went overboard while on cruise ships, according to data compiled by cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Carnival Vista cruise canceled: What to know about the ship's repairs, when it will sail

Passengers who sailed on a Carnival Vista ship last month and are waiting to get a refund because the sailing itinerary changed – stop waiting.

There’s no refund coming.

Once guests were on board the Carnival Vista on Aug. 10 , they were informed the ship’s cruising speed was limited due to a technical issue. Crew members informed passengers if they disembarked before the ship left port, they would get a full refund.

“The vast majority did (stay onboard),” said Matt Lupoli, Carnival's senior manager of public relations.

What options were Carnival Vista passengers given?

The ship was originally schedule for an 8-night southern Caribbean cruise with stops in places like Aruba, Curacao and Turks and Cacaos.

Instead, it headed to the Bahamas visiting Nassau, Princess Cays and Freeport.

Passengers were given two options:

Option 1: Disembark and get a full refund

Options 2: Remain on the cruise and get an undisclosed amount of onboard credit as well as credit for a future cruise.

Some passengers who remained on the cruise are saying they deserve a refund to make up for the difference in the cost of the cruise they purchased and the cruise the got. Carnival officials said that’s what the credits are for.

The guests were given an option to either sale with the credits or get a refund. Those who sailed with the credits are not eligible for a refund.

When will Carnival Vista sail again from Port Canaveral?

Engineers continue working on the ship and it’s expected to be repaired in time for a sailing scheduled to leave Sunday.

The Sept. 15 itinerary includes Half Moon Cay, Bahamas as well as Grand Turk and Amber Cove before returning to Port Canaveral on Sept. 21.

An eight-night southern Caribbean cruise that was supposed to leave Port Canaveral on Sept. 7 was canceled. The thousands of affected passengers received a refund, plus a future cruise credit.

The Carnival Vista has a double-occupancy capacity of 3,934 passengers; a full capacity of 4,977 passengers; and a crew of 1,450. It began sailing in 2016.

How common is it for Carnaval cruise ships to have technical issues with cruising speed?

Although this is not a common issue, it has happened before.

The last time was on the California-based Carnival Panorama in November 2023. That ship was out of commission for multiple sailings.

Cruise passenger dies after falling over balcony onto lower deck, spokesperson says

Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady cruise ship.

A passenger aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise ship died after falling over their balcony shortly after departure, a spokesperson said.

The ship, Valiant Lady, had left Miami on Sunday for Roatan, Honduras, when the incident occurred.

"On Sunday, shortly after departure there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers," the cruise line company said in an emailed statement. "This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away."

The passenger, who has not been identified, fell onto another person, Insider reported . The spokesperson for Virgin Voyages said in their statement that the second person was not seriously injured.

The spokesperson declined to release further details, saying it wants to protect the privacy of those involved.

The ship returned to Miami early Monday morning but has since resumed its voyage with slight changes to the itinerary.

Virgin Voyages said it was "deeply saddened" by what happened. "Our hearts and thoughts are with this person's loved ones," the statement said.

Chef fell from ship's gangway and wasn't found until the following day

An investigation has found that the gangway did not provide safe access to the boat as the guard ropes and safety net did not prevent the chef from falling into the water on October 2, 2023

A chef tragically lost his life after falling from the top of a ship's gangway. An investigation revealed that the gangway failed to provide safe access to the boat, as the guard ropes and safety net did not prevent the chef from plunging into the water on October 2, 2023.

The Pelican of London, a sail training vessel, docked at Sharpness shipyard in Gloucesterhshire on the morning of September 27. The following day, a volunteer came aboard the ship as a relief cook while the regular chef was absent.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) reported that on the nights of September 30 and October 1, the stand-in cook visited a local bar ashore. Fellow crew members observed him consuming several double whiskies with ice.

On October 2, at about 8pm, he once again joined his colleagues at a local bar. Over the next two-and-three-quarter hours, the chef consumed at least nine double whiskies with ice.

He left the bar just before 11pm and walked back to the ship alone. He reached the Pelican of London around 11.05pm and began to ascend the gangway, reports Gloucestershire Live .

Tragically, he fell from the side of the top of the gangway and landed in the dock. The ship's chief engineer heard the noise and rushed from their cabin.

However, they didn't notice anything unusual and returned to bed. The next morning, when the crew realised the chef was missing, a search was initiated. Sadly, his body was found on the jetty around 1pm on October 3. He was declared dead at the scene.

Investigation Findings

The probe into the chef's tragic demise revealed that the gangway did not offer a safe means of access to the Pelican of London. Onboard training and risk assessments also failed to mitigate the risk of a fall from the gangway.

It was also discovered that the chef had exceeded the legal alcohol limit for duty aboard the ship. The Pelican of London's drug and alcohol policy lacked clear guidelines for crew members returning on board after recreational time ashore.

Seas Your Future, the owners of the vessel, have been advised to reassess and modify their policy and training regarding the rigging and approval of the gangway. They have also been urged to review their procedure for handling drugs and alcohol.

World's biggest cruise ship is size of a city with 40 bars, 7 pools and ice rink

The world's largest cruise ship, 'Icon of the Seas', embarked on its maiden voyage from Miami Port in January this year. The gigantic vessel, which spans nearly four city blocks and boasts 20 decks, measures a staggering 1,200 feet (365 metres) from bow to stern and can accommodate up to 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members.

Owned by Royal Caribbean, the floating paradise is equipped with seven swimming pools, an ice rink, a theatre, and over 40 dining and entertainment venues.

Football superstar Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami colleagues were on hand to officially christen the ship as it set off on its first seven-day tropical island-hopping adventure from South Florida at the start of the year.

"Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of dreaming, innovating and living our mission to deliver the world's best vacation experiences responsibly," said Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. He added: "She is the ultimate multigenerational family vacation, forever changing the status quo in family travel and fulfilling vacation dreams for all ages on board."

As the ship sailed away, Royal Caribbean's cruises saw a surge in online popularity. Since December, the company's ambitious nine-month "Ultimate World Cruise" has been capturing - and occasionally baffling - the imagination of a dedicated group of social media enthusiasts, according to the Mirror, reports the Express .

Millions are living the voyage vicariously through the posts of passengers who are documenting their life at sea, where they will reside for nearly a full year. To some followers, this journey has all the hallmarks of a reality TV show.

The Icon of the Seas, first unveiled in October 2022, sparked the largest single booking day and highest volume booking week in Royal Caribbean's 53-year history, according to the cruise line.

The massive ship is divided into eight distinct neighbourhoods across its 20 decks. It boasts six waterslides, seven swimming pools, an ice skating rink, a theatre and over 40 restaurants, bars and lounges.

The vessel can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers at full capacity, along with a crew of 2,350.

US Mirror reporter Dave Monk went on the ship where he revealed a new thrill-ride called Crown's Edge which involves walking on a series of shapes, including crosses, before you wait for the platform below to give way and propel you into the void.

He said it was even scarier than riding the tallest drop slide at sea, which he had done earlier in the day.

TRV-CRU-ICON-OF-THE-SEAS-4-MI

Dave went on to explain there was even a production of The Wizard Of Oz - which was "as good as anything you'd see in the West End - including a puppet Toto and Dorothy flying in a bed above the audience during the cyclone."

He said: "These were the highlights of just one day on a preview cruise on Icon of the Seas, which is so big it's like a moving island rather than a cruise ship."

"With 2,350 crew, it can carry up to 7,600 passengers. Crammed into its 18 passenger decks are eight separate 'neighbourhoods', more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges, plus seven pools."

Despite spending three days aboard the cruise ship, the reporter couldn't experience all of its culinary delightsincluding a steakhouse, sushi bar, Italian cuisine, and seafood offeringsor frequent every one of the many watering holes.

Crew members are not left out as there's a dedicated 'staff neighbourhood' complete with a clubhouse featuring a coffee shop, a pub, a crew market selling items from their home countries, a gaming room, gym facilities, a karaoke room, and outdoor spaces designed for taking in the views while sipping a drink.

For the guests, there is an extensive array of entertainment options, encompassing over 40 ways to dine, imbibe, and enjoy oneself.

The waterpark on the ship, dubbed Category 6, boasts six record-breaking water slides, seven pools, and nine whirlpools.

Among these is the 'Pressure Drop', which at a 66-degree angle claims the title of "the industry's first open free-fall slide"; the towering 14-meter 'Frightening Bolt', set to be the tallest drop slide at sea; and Storm Surge, heralded as the inaugural family raft slide at sea.
