Nestled on the northwest coast of Italy, the city of Livorno is the main gateway to Tuscany and its iconic cities of Pisa and Florence. It is one of the major cruise ports in Italy together with Civitavecchia (Rome), Naples, Venice, and La Spezia , often included in the Mediterranean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Livorno port (Livorno cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)

Livorno Cruise Port

The cruise port of Livorno is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean and the third-largest port in Italy. Livorno cruise ship terminal consists of two main parts: Porto Industriale (or Porto Nuovo – New Port) in its northern part, and Porto Mediceo (part of Porto Vecchio – Old Port) in the south, closer to the Livorno downtown.

Livorno cruise port map

1. Porto Industriale – Industrial Port

The majority of cruise lines dock at Porto Industriale , the large container and cargo cruise terminal located in the northern part of the harbour. It consists of 3 main berths that can accommodate 3 large cruise vessels at a time. It is also possible to dock at several other piers, so in total the port can accommodate up to 8 ships simultaneously.

The new Livorno cruise terminal, Alto Fondale (located at Calata Punto Franco) is mainly used by ferries and cruise ships doing turnarounds in Livorno.

The industrial port handles heavy traffic and is usually very noisy, as that is also a ferry terminal offering ferry transportation between Sardinia and Corsica and the mainland. Guests are not allowed to walk around the port, so a complimentary shuttle service to the main port entrance is provided.

The shuttle bus will drop you off at the terminal building by the port entrance where cruise passengers can find an ATM, a tourist information office, car rentals, taxis, tour operators, and free Wi-Fi internet.

In front of the ship, guests can find only taxis and a tourist information kiosk. Here you can take a 5€ shuttle bus to the city center (the drop-off point is Piazza Grande, the main square). Tickets for this shuttle can be purchased in cash right before boarding the bus, and the ride takes less than 10 minutes.

If you are taking a cruise line-organized shore excursion, your tour buses are parked outside the terminal building. However, if you have booked a trip with an Independent tour operator, your transport will be waiting for you at the port entrance near the terminal building and you must take the free shuttle to get there.

2. Porto Mediceo

Porto Mediceo (a historic Medici port) is located in the southern part of the Livorno harbour and is dedicated to smaller cruise ships/yachts. It has 2 berths, located within 10-15 minutes walking from the city center. In the cruise terminal, you will find a tourist information kiosk, taxis and car rental service.

Getting Around Livorno Port

  • The official currency in Italy is EURO (€). Major credit cards are widely accepted. Small businesses though will only take cash.
  • The easiest way to get to Livorno city center is by a 5€ shuttle bus that picks you up at the terminal building and drops you off at Piazza Grande. From there, you can explore the city of Livorno on foot.
  • If you plan to get to the train station ( Livorno Centrale ) you can take the shuttle to the city center and then take bus #1 in front of the Duomo (Cathedral) to the Livorno Centrale train station. You can buy the bus ticket at Tabacchi – Tobacco shops , and you will find several of these at the place where the shuttle bus drops you off (in Via Claudio Cogorano and Via Grande streets). You can also purchase the tickets at the newsstands. You will find the bus stations on Via Grande, the street in front of the Cathedral and Piazza Grande Square.
  • The bus ride from Piazza Grande to Livorno Centrale takes only 5 minutes. Once you arrive at the Livorno train station, you can take trains to Pisa, Florence, Lucca, and other places. If you are not in a hurry, you can also walk to the station and the journey takes around 30 minutes.
  • If you are planning to use the train services during your visit, make sure to check the train schedules and always have a backup plan, as you never know when trains can go on strike. You can check the timetables and fares on Trenitalia.com
  • You can also take a taxi to Livorno train station directly from the cruise terminal, and the ride takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.  This is a convenient option since 6 people can fit in a taxi.
  • Taxis are also available outside the terminal. A ride from Porto Industriale piers to Livorno city center lasts approximately 15 minutes, however, many taxi drivers won’t agree to drive you to Livorno as most of them wait for the passengers who want to travel further – to Pisa, Florence, or elsewhere.
  • Public bus – Livorno has a reliable bus network and is well-connected to other places in Tuscany. The two main bus routes in Livorno are LAM BLU (LB) Bus Route (or Bus #1), and LAM ROSSA (LR) Bus Route (or Bus #2). You can use both to get to the Livorno Centrale train station. If you are docked at Porto Mediceo, there is a bus stop within walking distance from the port and you can catch the LAM BLU bus to go to the city center.
  • Livorno Hop on Hop off bus tours are available every hour and they depart from the shuttle bus stop at the cruise terminal. The whole circuit takes 60 minutes and the audio guides in multiple languages are available.
  • Pisa International Airport is the closest airport to Livorno. It is located approximately 22 km/14 miles (a 35-minute drive) northeast of Livorno cruise port. Another airport is Florence Airport which is located 90 km/56 miles (a 1h 15-minute drive) northeast of the port.

If you decide to stay closer to the ship, do not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Livorno because it has a lot to offer! Once the shuttle bus drops you off at Piazza Grande, you can explore the majority of Livorno city attractions on foot.

The entrance to the city from the port already speaks well of its history, because one of the first things you will come across is Fortezza Vecchia , an imposing medieval fortress with three defensive bastions that were built in the 16th century.

Further on, the Cathedral of San Francisco (Cattedrale di San Francesco), also known as Duomo, dominates Piazza Grande and Via Grande, the main street that connects the old port (Porto Mediceo) to Piazza della Repubblica .

The Cathedral was constructed in the early 17th century and represents a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture, boasting valuable artworks and a beautiful interior. It had a turbulent history as it was completely demolished during World War II bombings, only to be restored in the 1950s.

There are also a few other Livorno highlights not to be missed:

  • Jewish Synagogue – located only 2oo m from the Duomo, the new synagogue was built in the 1960s to replace the original one that was destroyed in World War II.
  • Venice Quarter (Quartieri Venezia) – Less than a 10-minute walk north of the Cathedral, close to the Livorno cruise port, you will come across this historic quarter that kept its original look as it wasn’t destroyed in the WWII bombings. Often referred to as the Venezia Nuova district, with its channels, bridges, colorful facades and ancient buildings, this part of Livorno will throw you back to Venice. In the vicinity, you will find the Church of St Catherine (Chiesa di Santa Caterina) and Fortezza Nuova – an imposing ancient fort dating from the early 17th century.

  • Civic Museum “Giovanni Fattori” (Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori) – Approximately a 30-minute walk (or 10 minutes drive) south of Livorno city center and Porto Mediceo, and a 15-minute drive south of Porto Industriale, art lovers can visit this exceptional art museum dedicated to Giovanni Fattori, a 19th-century artist born in Livorno and a leader of ‘Macchiaioli’ artistic movement. In the gallery, you can visit the remarkable collections of his paintings, as well as the artworks of other Macchiaioli painters.
  • The Four Moors (Monumento dei Quattro Mori) – Dominating Piazza Giuseppe Micheli and Piazza del Pamiglione, this extraordinary monument overlooks Porto Mediceo dock and sits at the beginning of Via Grande. The marble and bronze monument was erected in the early 17th century and commemorates Medici Grand Duke Ferdinando I’s victories over the Ottomans.

Thanks to its legendary Leaning Tower, Pisa is one of the most famous cities in Italy known all over the world. Located in the Field of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the spectacular Leaning Tower is surrounded by the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa), the cemetery (Camposanto) and the Baptistery – considered the most beautiful example of Romanesque architecture.

Besides its extraordinary landmarks, The Field of Miracles is packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Field of Miracles - The Baptistery, Pisa Cathedral and The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The tower was originally built as a bell tower for the Cathedral but never fulfilled its purpose due to its faulty design and loose soil beneath it. Undoubtedly, climbing the most famous Tower in Italy is among the main experiences of your trip to Italy, but please consider that you will need to climb 300 spiral steps to the top.

It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets at specific times selected in advance to ensure your place in line. For security reasons and conservation of the Tower of Pisa, visitors can climb in groups of 40 people with shifts of 35/40 minutes. Kids under 8 cannot climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa due to safety reasons.

It takes 5-10 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace, so you can admire Pisa and the Field of Miracles for about 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, there is no elevator inside the tower to accommodate wheelchair users, however, you can admire the beauty of the tower from the outside and take the iconic picture holding the tower. Check out more information on the Tower of Pisa official webpage

How to Get to Pisa from Livorno Port?

  • Train – You can catch the train from Livorno Centrale train station to Pisa Centrale; the train runs every 10-15 minutes, and the journey to Pisa takes 15 minutes. The train station in Pisa (Pisa Centrale) is approximately a 20-minute walk from the Field of Miracles.
  • Public bus – The buses to Pisa depart from Piazza della Repubblica, the square located a 5-minute walk from Piazza Grande in Livorno. You will need bus #10 which runs every 30 minutes, and the ride to Pisa lasts approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive in Pisa, the bus will drop you off at the bus stop near the railway station, so you can either walk to the Field of Miracles or take a local bus to get there.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride to Pisa from the cruise port in Livorno takes around 30 minutes (the distance is 25 km/15.5 miles. Taxis in Italy are quite expensive (make sure you inquire about official prices at the tourist information desk) so a better deal is to book a private transfer .
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines offer different tour options to Pisa – some of them include the entrance fee to the Tower, others a guided tour and free time at the site, or just the transfers. You can either book with your cruise line or explore Independent tour operator offers.

3. Florence

Known as the cradle of the Renaissance thanks to its remarkable architecture, and historical and cultural heritage, Tuscany’s capital is a must-see place if you are visiting Tuscany for the first time.

Although you need at least a couple of days in Florence to properly visit the city, the best way to explore Florence is to take a guided walking tour along with a knowledgeable guide, who will share the local stories and take you to the most interesting corners and hidden gems of the city.

If you decide to come on your own, keep in mind that for most of the museums and landmarks you need to purchase the skip-the-line entrance tickets  in advance.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore - Florence

Here are some of the must-see places in Florence:

  • If you are an art lover, you should visit Uffizi Gallery , and Galleria dell’Accademia (which houses the original Michelangelo’s  David ) considered some of the most renowned museums in Florence. Be prepared for the long lines, especially during the summer months. Some other museums and art galleries to consider are Palazzo Vecchio , Palazzo Pitti , Palazzo Strozzi , Casa di Dante Museum , Casa Buonarroti (Michelangelo’s Museum) among others.
  • At the beautiful Piazza della Signoria Square dominated by the imposing Palazzo Vecchio, you can see a replica of Michelangelo’s David, and the statues of the great artists of Florence.
  • The 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) located in Piazza del Duomo is the most striking structure in Florence with its red-tiled Dome – the symbol of Florence. The Cathedral is majestic and in addition to enjoying its external beauties, it is worth visiting the Cathedral’s interior and climbing to the Dome to enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the city.
  • Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a remarkable 15th-century basilica and the city’s main Dominican church featuring famous frescoes by Gothic and Renaissance masters.
  • The famous Baroque Porcellino fountain (Fontana del Porcellino – the bronze fountain of a boar) is located in the 16th century Market Square (Mercato del Porcellino) and is a mandatory stop for those who want to return to Florence. Tradition says that if you touch the boar’s snout you will surely return.
  • No visit to Florence is complete without a stop at Ponte Vecchio (old bridge). Take your time to admire it from a distance or walk through and visit one of the shops – the jewelry on the bridge is not cheap, but looking at the jewelry does not cost anything!

Ponte Vecchio - Florence

How to Get to Florence from the Port of Livorno?

  • Shore Excursion – Florence is located 90 km/56 miles from the port of Livorno, approximately a 1-hour 30-minute drive. Due to the distance and the limited time in port, I strongly suggest you take an organized shore excursion, either from the cruise line or a reliable tour operator.
  • Train – You can take the train from Livorno Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. The train runs 2 or 3 times per hour, and the journey takes 1h 20 minutes (up to 1h 40 minutes). Once you get off the train, you’ll be in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, and in less than a 10-minute walk you can reach The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer

If you are already familiar with Pisa and Florence then head over to Lucca, one of the few Italian cities that has kept all the medieval splendor of its historic center intact. Known as the city of 100 towers and 100 churches, it contains historical and artistic sites that deserve to be visited.

The city is famous for being surrounded by a wall built between the 16th and 17th centuries that has remained intact, and it is the birthplace of two of the greatest Italian musicians, Luigi Boccherini and Giacomo Puccini. Stroll through the beautiful elliptical-shaped square, Piazza Anfiteatro , built on top of an ancient amphitheater from the 2nd century AD. See the monumental church of San Michele in Foro with its 13th-century façade decorated with intricate details and its huge statue of the Archangel Michael at the top.

San Michele in Foro - Lucca

The Guinigi Palace (Palazzo Guinigi) and Guinigi Tower (Torre Guinigi) are must-see attractions, especially if you look for spectacular panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. You can climb 230 steps of this 14th-century brick tower and admire some great views of Lucca from the picturesque garden at the top.

Torre delle Ore (Torre dell’ Orologio) located only a few minutes walk from Guinigi Tower, is the medieval clock tower and the tallest tower in the city from the top of which you can see the entire city of Lucca. The most interesting thing about this tower is the manual clock mechanism, which can be observed in detail while climbing. Throughout the old town, you will find signs that indicate a tour of the city; I advise you to follow them as they will allow you to find the monuments easily.

How to Get to Lucca from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • Train – The distance between Lucca and the port of Livorno is approximately 50 km/30 miles (a 55-minute drive). The most convenient and affordable option is to take the train from Livorno Centrale to Pisa Centrale and then change train to Lucca. The train runs twice per hour, and the whole one-way trip takes around 1 hour.
  • Taxi/Private Transfer – A taxi ride takes around 45 minutes.
  • Shore Excursion – Cruise lines and independent tour operators offer shore excursions to Lucca.

5. Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre (“five towns”) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park that consists of five fishing villages perched high up on the cliffs of the Italian Riviera approximately 110 km/68 miles north of Livorno. The beauty of the colorful medieval villages can best be admired by boat, which allows visitors to take in the breathtaking views of the villages and the dramatic coast of northwest Italy.

Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore village

The villages of Riomaggiore , Manarola , Vernazza , Corniglia , and Monterosso al Mare boast rich history and traditions as they date from the Middle Ages, and they are interconnected by trails so you can explore them on foot, or by hiking. There is also a train that runs every few minutes between the villages, which allows travelers to easily move from one village to another.

Another wonderful place to visit is Portovenere , a medieval coastal village located south of Cinque Terre. Although it isn’t officially part of Cinque Terre, the village is equally beautiful and often included in the same itinerary and Cinque Terre shore excursions. I wrote about Cinque Terre in detail in my article: Day Trip to Cinque Terre and Portovenere from La Spezia Port

Portovenere harbour

How to Get to Cinque Terre from Livorno Port?

  • It takes at least a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach the first village of Riomaggiore from Livorno cruise port and due to the distance, not all the cruise lines offer shore excursions to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is more easily explored from the port of La Spezia , but in case you decide to visit it from Livorno, the best way would be to either book a shore excursion or a round-trip private transfer .
  • The train is not a convenient option as it would take you at least 2 hours one way to get to the villages, including changing one or two trains (at Pisa Centrale and La Spezia Centrale). You would need to carefully plan your day according to the train timetables and the ship’s scheduled time in port.

6. San Gimignano

Nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside and the Chianti wine region in the province of Siena, San Gimignano is another hidden gem of Tuscany boasting stunning medieval architecture. The distance between San Gimignano and Livorno port is 83 km/52 miles and it takes a 1h 30 minutes drive to get there.

San Gimignano is a small walled hilltop town also known as the Town of Fine Towers due to a dozen of preserved tower houses. The town boasts beautiful Gothic and Romanesque architecture, churches, medieval fortifications, great local cuisine, and delicious wines.

San Gimignano panorama

The main San Gimignano highlights are the Colegiata (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta); the Church of Sant’ Agostino;  the Communal Palace (Palazzo Communale, the Town Hall) located on Piazza del Duomo and home to the town gallery; Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà;  the Cistern Square (Piazza della Cisterna, the main town square); Torre Grossa (54m, the tallest tower); Salvucci Tower (Torri dei Salvucci); and a few others.

How to Get to San Gimignano from Livorno Cruise Port?

  • It takes around a 1-hour 30-minute drive one way to reach San Gimignano. Some cruise lines offer shore excursions, however, most of them include stops at other places in Tuscany (Siena) which means that you won’t have much time to spend in San Gimignano.
  • You can either book a shore excursion or private round trip transfer , or you can rent a car, which is a great option as there are a couple of car parks outside the walls of San Gimignano where you can leave your car for a fee.
  • You can also take a train from Livorno Centrale to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano (with 1 change at Empoli). The ride takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

With its historic center protected by UNESCO, medieval architecture, a great number of museums, galleries, and a long history of banking/commercial activities, Siena is the capital city of the province of Siena located 130 km/81 miles (a 2-hour drive) southeast of Livorno port.

It is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and if you decide to spend your day in Siena, you should see the city highlights including the imposing Campo Square (Piazza del Campo, the main square), the Tower of Mangia (Torre del Mangia), the 12th-century Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) overlooking Piazza del Duomo, Santa Maria in Provenzano Church , the 14th-century Gothic Palazzo Salimbeni dominating a large Piazza Salimbeni , Siena Synagogue …

  • Due to the distance between the Livorno cruise port and Siena, it’s advisable to either book a shore excursion, private round-trip transfer , or rent a car. The traveling time to Siena is approximately 2 hours each way.
  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Siena; the train runs once per hour, and you will need to change the train in Empoli. The ride takes at least 2 hours.

8. Volterra

Located around a 1-hour drive from Livorno cruise port (72 km/45 miles), the mountaintop town of Volterra is known for its rich history and the ruins dating from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods.

While there, don’t miss out on visiting some of the main Volterra highlights: the Roman Theater of Volterra (Teatro Romano di Volterra) dating from the 1st century BC; Piazza dei Priori (the main square) dominated by Palazzo dei Priori , the 13th-century Town Hall building; Volterra Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) with its marble entrance and a gilded coffered ceiling; the Etruscan Museum “Mario Guarnacci” , and the remains of the Etruscan Acropolis (Acropoli Etrusca) among others.

Volterra - Italy

How to Get to Volterra from Livorno Port?

  • Some cruise lines offer shore excursions that include a stop in Volterra, however, if you want to go on your own, the best option would be to either rent a car or book a private transfer . The ride takes approximately 1h 10 minutes each way.
  • You can also take the train from Livorno Centrale to Volterra-Saline-Pomarance train station (including 1 change in Cecina). The ride takes up to 1 hour 30 minutes. Once you get off at the Volterra-Saline-Pomarance, you will need to catch a local bus #780 and ride for another 25 minutes.
  • If you decide to go by train, you need to carefully plan your day because there are only a few trains running per day, and the local buses are not frequent. I suggest you book a shore excursion, either with your cruise line or a reliable tour operator, as you will avoid all the hassle with the local transportation.

Italy has a rich cultural heritage with many churches and cathedrals that require modest attire out of respect for their religious significance. Ensure your shoulders are covered and avoid wearing shorts or revealing clothing when entering these sacred spaces.

While exploring Livorno itself, casual attire is generally acceptable. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as you may find yourself strolling along cobblestone streets or exploring charming neighborhoods like Venezia Nuova. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen during the summer months as temperatures can rise significantly, especially if you plan on spending time outdoors.

Currency Options for Small Purchases

As a cruise passenger visiting Livorno, it’s advisable to carry some local currency for small purchases like snacks or souvenirs from local vendors who may not accept credit cards. Euros are widely accepted throughout Italy, including tourist areas in Livorno. However, major credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are generally accepted in most establishments, so you can rely on plastic for larger expenses or at more tourist-oriented venues.

To avoid any inconvenience, inform your bank or credit card company about your travel plans to ensure smooth transactions without any unexpected blocks. It’s also a good idea to have some cash on hand for emergencies or situations where card payments may not be possible.

Basic Italian Phrases for Easy Communication

While many locals in Livorno may speak English, knowing a few basic Italian phrases can go a long way in facilitating communication and immersing yourself in the local culture. Simple greetings like “buongiorno” (good morning) and “grazie” (thank you) are always appreciated. Learning phrases such as “scusa” (excuse me), “dov’è il bagno?” (where is the bathroom?), and “posso avere il conto?” (can I have the bill?) can be helpful during your time ashore.

Engaging with locals using even just a few words of their language shows respect and often leads to memorable interactions. Don’t worry about being fluent; Italians are generally welcoming and appreciative of visitors who make an effort to communicate in their native tongue.

Taco Trivia: Uncovering the History and Origins

I’ve learned some fascinating taco trivia while exploring the culinary delights of Mexico. Uncovering taco origins: a historical perspective reveals that the true origin of tacos remains a mystery. However, it is believed that indigenous people may have been eating tacos long before the arrival of the Spanish.

Tacos first made their appearance in the United States in 1905, thanks to The Chili Queens. The evolution of taco fillings is also intriguing. From the indigenous ingredients to modern variations, tacos have come a long way. The arrival of pastor tacos in Mexico was influenced by Lebanese immigrants in the 1930s, adding a unique twist to the traditional flavors.

Whether it’s the soft corn tacos in Mexico or the hard shells commonly eaten in the US, tacos continue to be a beloved and versatile dish enjoyed by people all over the world.

One unique dish that I am eager to try is the Elotes y Esquites Estilo Sinaloa. This dish consists of roasted corn kernels, crushed Doritos, a mayonnaise-like cream, cheese, and chili pepper. It is a unique version of corn that may not be familiar to everyone, but its popularity is evident from the queue of hungry customers. Served in a bag, this carb-filled snack is a perfect combination of flavors and textures.

Livorno Cruise Port – What to See and Do

We didn’t plan to explore the Livorno cruise port on our Mediterranean cruise – even though our ship was stopping there. Like many passengers, we planned to go somewhere else. We booked a full day shore excursion to Cinque Terre, so when our shore excursion was cancelled at the last minute and a local transit strike was making passage to Pisa a challenge, we were scrambling to find information on Livorno cruise port. In the end, we had a fun time exploring Livorno on our own. Here are some tips to help you find the best sites when you’re exploring the Livorno cruise port.

Getting From Livorno Cruise Port to Downtown Livorno

You can’t walk from the Livorno cruise port to downtown Livorno – not easily anyways. There are canals and fences that turn what would be a short walk as the crow flies into a long ordeal. When we asked the concierge onboard our MSC cruise ship, they said there was no free shuttle at the Livorno cruise port, so we purchased a roundtrip shuttle bus ticket for 5 euros each directly from the ship. The shuttle took us from the Livorno cruise port to downtown Livorno.

The Shuttle We Didn’t Know About

We found out afterwards that there was a free shuttle that ran every half hour from the Livorno cruise port to Fortrezza Vecchia, one of the key sites to see in the city. It’s an easy 15-minute walk from there to the central part of the city. We even ended up riding the free shuttle back to the ship. If we had waited until we were in the cruise terminal building to buy the shuttle tickets, we would have found out about the free shuttle. Another option is to catch a cab. If transit busses are running, that might also be an option, but there was a transit strike when we visited.

Why You Should Explore Livorno Cruise Port

There was a time in the 18th century when Livorno was on the must-see list of every European traveler. In 1571, the Grand Duke of Tuscany had his architects transform the small fishing port into the ideal Renaissance city. With free port status, Livorno became a thriving international city with wonderful historic architecture. Unfortunately, the city was heavily bombed during WWII and many of the most historic structures were damaged. Nowadays, much has been rebuilt and there’s more to see than you might think. Best of all, you should have time to visit nearby Pisa and explore Livorno cruise port all in one day.

Livorno is a great city for walking. Wear good walking shoes and bring a day pack to carry water, snacks and a jacket in case it rains. If you decide to climb Mastio de Matilde at Fortezza Vecchia, a tripod and a selfie stick might be useful. Here’s a cool selfie stick that also works as a tripod , so you only need to carry one extra item.

Getting to Pisa from Livorno Cruise Port

Trains from Livorno central station to Pisa are frequent. It only takes 15 minutes to get from Livorno to Pisa Aeroporto. Plan on taking around 45 minutes to and from Pisa Aeroporto including changing trains at Pisa Centrale. ATL also runs buses direct from Pisa Airport to Livorno and back.

What to See at Livorno Cruise Port

Local bus transportation services the entire city, but we found it to be very walkable. Here are some of the key sites we explored on foot near the Livorno cruise port.

Fortezza Nuova

The New Fort was constructed in the mid to late 1500’s and provided additional defenses for the city and the Livorno cruise port. The fort is an imposing pentagonal shaped structure surrounded on all sides by canals. You can wander through it and see the ancient gun ports and relax in the beautiful gardens and grounds inside it. When Livorno was bombed in WWII, many locals took refuge in Fortezza Nuova – with the last residents leaving in 1968. If you only see one site in the city of Livorno, make it this one. Exploring the fort is free.

Livorno Port

One of the busiest and most productive ports in Italy, the port accommodates a mix of recreational and commercial vessels of all sizes. It’s fascinating to wander around the port and watch boats and ships coming and going. Along the edge of the cruise port not far from the old port, we came across a fish market where local fishermen sell their wares – another fascinating place to watch in action.

Livorno (Leghorn in English) has a new cruise terminal at the Calata Punto Franco called "Alto Fondale" (only used for "turnarounds") and is 0,5 km from the city center. Airports: Pisa 13 Km, Florence 80 Km, Railway Station: 3 Kilometres.

Large ships dock at the container terminal (Porto Industriale), where you are not allowed to walk, shuttle buses will be provided, 5 Euro, cash only, sometimes free depending on the cruise line. The shuttles will drop you off at the Piazza Grande. Taxis will also be available. Here you can buy at the tobacconists bus and train tickets to Pisa (7.40 Euro return) and Florence. (20.60 euro retum)

From there, you can take Bus #1 "Stazione" to the train station. The bus ride is about 5 minutes. From there take the train to Florence, Lucca and/or Pisa. Validate your tickets before entering the train.

Cruise ship shuttles directly to the station are 12 Euro.

Heading for Pisa: Trains approx. every half hour. Get off at Pisa Centrale, buy bus tickets (1.10 euro) from the news stands in the central hall and take the bus right in front of the NH Cavaliere Hotel to "Torre" which means Tower. The whole trip from port takes less than one hour.

Getting to Florence by Train : Doing it by yourself is usually (a lot) cheaper than an organized tour, and you will have a few hours in Florence, but if you are on a cruise make sure you get back in time for the ship's departure!

Tip: If you are on a large cruise ship or if there are more cruise ships in port: Try to be one of the first to get off board, take (share) a taxi and take the train. Things otherwise might get very hectic. A ships organized excursion is the other option.

Pisa and Lucca are not as far as Florence, and you can do things more leisurely. train schedules

Sightseeing:

Most of the interesting bits of Livorno are within the old Porto Mediceo part of town (laid out by Florentine architect Bernardo Buonatlenti in 1567 on behalf of the Medici), still surrounded by its five-sided Fosso Reale canal. The canal is bridged in the east by an enormous vault called the Voltone, better known today as the huge rectangular Piazza della Repubblica, off the north of which you can see the Fortezza Nuova, which today is home to the city's most popular, if somewhat downtrodden, public park (open daily 10am-7pm).

Via Grande leads west from Piazza della Repubblica, passing Via Madonna on the right, with its three baroque facades (no churches, just the facades) before spilling into Piazza Grande. The Duomo here, laid out in 1587, had to be almost entirely reconstructed after World War II bombing. The piazza used to be much longer, but a modern building has separated it from what's now Largo Municipio to the north, where you'll find the bell tower and double stairs of the 1720 Palazzo Municipio and, to the left, the 17th-century Palazzo di Camera.

The tourist office is at Piazza Cavour 6.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Livorno hop on/off tour . Runs til' October.

At the tourist office just off Via Grande you can book great tours, including a canal boat tour of historic Livorno with multi lingual guides. The canal boat tour, 45 minutes duration, costs €12, cash only

An excellent way to see Livorno and especially to explore the surrounding area is to rent a car and head for the road! However driving in Italy is not for the faint of heart.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

If you are not visiting Florence, Pisa with it's leaning tower is within easy reach.

Lucca : Imagine a beautiful little Tuscan town protected by massively thick 16th-century walls, featuring some of Italy's finest medieval and Renaissance architecture, superb dining, antique markets, classical and rock music festivals, easy access to stunning nearby villas in the surrounding hills and with endless beaches less than half an hour away. Lucca is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets.

With a little planning you can easily combine Lucca and Pisa. If you are planning to climb the tower of Pisa, buy your tickets in advance and choose a time slot.

The coast between Livorno and Piombino is a succession of famous resorts and well-maintained clean beaches, many of which have been awarded Europe's Blue Flag various times.

If you are a little cultured out, you might visit San Gimignano , a pretty medieval walled city in Tuscany. Rent a car.

Shopping and Food

The heart of Livorno, leads straight to the town center from the port, and is full of excellent shops and stores offering quality goods of every kind at prices to suit all pocketbooks. This itinerary also leads to churches of different denominations, monuments (the two Fortresses and famous "Four Moors" statue) and the imposing piazza della Repubblica.

Leather articles, shoes, silk scarves, ties and chic fashions for men and women can be found in elegant stores in Florence and to a limited extent in Livorno.

Eat your way around Livorno! If you are a lover of Italian food, or just food in general, you can easily spend a day or a weekend in Livorno making your way around a selection of the many cafés, bars and restaurants There is a large street market, mercato centrale, with fruit, vegetables, clothes, shoes etc. just 2 blocks ( a 4-minute walk) from the tourist office. At the far end is a huge covered market. Go early for the seafood stalls.

What To Do In Livorno Cruise Port?

Livorno is known for its deep Italian culture, historical forts, delectable cuisine, and famous Italian Pizza cafes. So, if your cruise stops at Livorno cruise port, you are fortunate.

There are many things to do in Livorno; in fact, you can spend an unforgettable vacation there with your family and friends. Be ready to see the deep culture of Italy in this water city. Visit Mascagni Terrace to get the best coastal view and sanctuary of Montenegro, or hop on a bus to explore the city.

In today's guide, I'm your travel guide for the Livorno tour, and I will introduce you to the deep history of this city and explore some of the best activities to do in Livorno.

1- Explore Marina di Campo

The first thing is to explore the Marina di Campo in Livorno, a famous tourist spot known for its breathtaking islands and crystal clear water. This spot is just 140 km away from a cruise port.

Don't worry, and this is not too much distance; it just takes 3 hours to reach this haven spot. Last year, me and my friend Zoe Grace (travel blogger at Cruiseshipmania ) visited this place, and believe me, there are many things to do.

The short shore excursions, outdoor activities, food, and romantic places will make your trip unforgettable. Take e-bikes and hop on the Monte Tambone to see the sunset views. Plus, you can also enjoy snorkeling.

2- Savor a Cacciucco Cooking Class

Are you an Italian food lover? Join the local cooking class to learn more about the local taste. You can also know about the secret recipe for Italian Pizza.

After taking this class, you can cook at home by yourself.

3- Explore La Venezia

A route of striking fascination over bridges and around churches. Visit the Venezia Nuova (New Venice) District starting from the bridge of St. John Nepomuceno, which takes its name from the statue that stands on it, and following the Scali del Corso, Scali Finocchietti and Scali degli Isolotti, cross the Marble Bridge which allows us access to Via Borra, the largest and most elegant road of the district and rich with imposing historical palazzos like the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, the Palazzo delle Colonne and the Palazzo Huigens.

4- Go To Mascagni Terrace

Mascagni Terrace is situated in the charming coastal town of Livorno, Italy. This place is so peaceful that you can deep breathe, and it eliminates all the fatigue of the day.

Plus, the place is so photogenic that you can capture some photos for IG. It's an idyllic spot for a leisurely evening, whether you're sipping espresso at a café or enjoying a tranquil moment, watching the waves break along the Italian Riviera.

5- Explore Picturesque Villages

Last year, I had a blast exploring these charming little villages. I gotta say, it was like stepping into a postcard. From cobblestone streets to quaint cottages, it was all so Instagram-worthy.

I started in a village in the hills, where every corner had a stunning view. Then, I meandered down to another one, where time seemed to stand still.

The locals were super friendly and chatty. I even stumbled upon a cosy café with the best espresso ever. Those villages were like a dream, and I can't wait to return and get lost in their beauty again.

6- Visit Fortezza Nuova

I visited Fortezza Nuova last year, and it was pretty cool. This old fortress in Livorno has a rich history, and wandering through its thick walls felt like stepping back in time.

There's a museum inside that tells you all about the city's maritime past – interesting stuff. The best part? The view from up there is amazing.

You can see the whole city and the sea. I even spotted some old cannons. It's a great spot to explore if you're into history or want to enjoy some killer views of Livorno. I'd recommend it for sure.

7- Visit Acquario di Livorno To Explore Marine Life

If you have kids, the Acquario di Livorno is the must-have place for you. The kids will find something special there. There are many unique and interesting species.

Next to it, there is also a water park where the kids can take water rides and immerse themselves in fun outdoor activities. Plus, you can also capture some of the best photos with the aquarium and in the water park.

Port Livorno (locode ITLIV) is Tuscany's principal port as well as the cruise port to four provincial capital cities - Pisa (approx 25 km / 16 mi away), Lucca (~50 km / 30 mi), Firenze/Florence (Tuscany's capital, ~105 km / 65 mi to the east), and Siena (~130 km / 80 mi).

Livorno is the principal cruise port to Florence/Pisa. However, as an alternative port to these popular tourist cities is sometimes used Carrara , from where Florence and Pisa are also accessed via shore excursions/bus tours.

Port Livorno

Livorno is one of the biggest seaports in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. It serves various types of ships, including cargo carriers, container ships , passenger ships ( ferries and cruise liners). Several heavy-traffic regularly scheduled ferry services are provided by the companies Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Golfo Aranci Sardinia  and  Bastia Corsica ), Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona Spain and Tangier Morocco ), Toremar (to Capraia Island), Moby Lines (to Corsica Island's ports Bastia and Olbia ).

In the end of 2013 was approved a plan for expanding Livorno's passenger port (that serves the ferry and cruise shipping traffic). The project included both piers (Alto Fondale, Calata Orlando), providing 3 more dedicated cruise berths (for vessels with LOA length 300+ m / 984+ ft) and infrastructure development (relocating commercial berths to separate cargo and passenger traffic). The first phase of the port expansion project was completed in 2017. All works are expected to be completed in 2022-23. Until the project's completion, commercial piers will still be used for cruise ship docking.

In November 2015, the Port introduced its shoreside-power supply system (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) providing up to 12 MW electrical power for berthed vessels. The system can support mid-sized cruise liners (with passenger capacity 1000-2000) which usually dock at Sgarallino Pier. The project cost EUR 3,5 million, and was 80% funded by Port Livorno. By 2018, the company Enel (Italy's manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas) increased the Port's shore-power capacity up to 45 MW, allowing cold ironing services to ships berthed at other piers, as well as capacity to supply larger vessels.

Port's statistical data for season 2016 showed a total of 404 cruise ship calls and 810,000 passengers - about 16% increase over 2015. Season 2017's data showed a 10% decrease (over 2016) in ship visits.

In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 349 ship calls and handled around 700,000 passengers. Season 2017 featured 6 new cruise vessels (making maiden calls) and 3 ships doing partial turnaround (optional embarkation / disembarkation in Port Livorno):  AIDAperla  (17 calls),  Silver Muse  (5),  Seabourn Encore  (5),  Majestic Princess  (4),  Viking Sky  (2),  Norwegian Joy  (1 call),  MSC Armonia  (17 partial turnarounds),  Arethusa  (16 partial turnarounds),  Hebridean Sky  (1 partial turnaround).

In 2018, the port had scheduled 362 cruise ship calls with around 730,000 passengers. Also in 2018 was completed cruise port's privatization (started in 2017), with MSC Cruises being one of its owners.

There are plans for port developments (budgeted EUR 90 million) for building 4 new berths and terminals with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . These plans also include building new facilities providing shore-side power and LNG bunkering. Port's max draft is 15 m (49 ft) and its access channel is wide enough to accommodate big-sized liners.

Starting operations in January 2019, Port Livorno has Mediterranean's largest container  crane ("Model 8 Mobile Harbor Crane"). Built by Konecranes Gottwald lift AGV, the huge crane has max lifting capacity 200 tons, operational radius 12-16 m and hoising heights 12-54 m (below-above quay level). It can serve boxships and ConRo vessels (RoRo-boxship combo transporting TEUs, wheeled cargo and vehicles). The new crane is diesel-electric (power output 1 MW) and can be hooked-up to the terminal's power grid.

In March 2022, Port Livorno contracted for dredging and other works SIDRA (Societa Italiana Dragaggi, subsidiary of DEME Group). Besides dredging, the project includes the construction of Europa Dock, port expansion works (expanding the berthing line with ~3 km / 1,9 mi), coastal defense works (building two new breakwaters - North and South, plus relocating the Meloria breakwater/total breakwater length 6 km / 3,7 mi). Scheduled to start in 2023, works will deepen the Port's access channel (to 17 m / 56 ft), the internal basins draft (to 16 m / 53 ft), and also lay the new breakwaters' foundations. The contract's value is yet to be revealed but, reportedly, it's over EUR 150 million.

Livorno cruise terminal

Currently, the cruise port has 3 berths (close to Pisa International Airport) and can handle 3 large-sized ships at a time. Extra berthing is available at other piers, offering priority docking for passenger shipping vessels. In total, the port can handle 8 cruise ships simultaneously. Smaller-sized vessels berth within walking distance to downtown (Old Fortress).

Livorno's new Alto Fondale cruise terminal is located at Silos Granari Calata Punto Franco. The facility is used only by ships operating on roundtrip itinerariess from Livorno (turnarounds). It is located approx 0,5 km from the city center. Two big airports are located close to the cruise port terminal - Aeroporto di Pisa (13 km / 8 ml) and Aeroporto di Firenze (Florence, 80 km / 50 ml).

Large cruise ships to Livorno dock at port's container terminal. From there is provided shuttle bus service (terminal to Piazza Grande). Depending on cruise company, this service is at additional charge or complimentary. Taxis at the terminal are also available. The nearest railway station is approx 3 km (1,9 ml) or about 5-min bus drive. Bus shuttles stop at the train station too. At the terminal, cruise passsengers can purchase bus and train (roundtrip) tickets to Pisa, Florence and Lucca. Trains from Livorno to Pisa depart every 30 min.

In the end of 2013 was approved a 3-year plan for expanding the cruise port. It included the whole Alto Fondale and Calata Orlando piers, and provided 3 more cruise ship dedicated berths for larger vessels (with length over 300 m / 980 ft).

Port's future expansion involves a huge investment for redesigning of its infrastructure in order commercial berths to be relocated, so cargo and passenger shipping traffic to be separated. This project's first stage will be completed in 2017. By the year 2022 all should be completed, but the commercial piers will still be used by cruise ships in the meantime.

In the near future, Port Livorno will offer LNG bunkering at a new (dedicated) cruise terminal just 20 km (12 ml) away from the cruise port. The port autority company announced in July 2016 that they are considering the option to use the LNG plant to refuel LNG-powered cruise ships . This way Livorno will join the seaports offering LNG bunkering (liquefied natural gas). Close-to-port LNG supply service will allow vessels to bunker directly - without using LNG barges or trucks to provide them with fuel.

Livorno is also thye cruise port to Pisa and Florence. The long list of Livorno's places of interest and most popular tourist attractions includes:

  • Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • Acquario comunale Diacinto Cestoni
  • Fortezza Nuova
  • Fortezza Vecchia
  • Fosso Reale
  • Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori
  • Museo di storia naturale del Mediterraneo
  • Orto Botanico del Mediterraneo
  • Old English Cemetery
  • Sanctuary of Montenero
  • Porto Mediceo
  • Venezia Nuova
  • Terrazza Mascagni

A popular shore excursion offered from Livorno cruise port is the bus tour of Bolgheri and the Wine Road, located at approx 40 min drive distance from the port. The famous Viale dei Cipressi leads cruise tourists to the village of Bolgheri. After visiting the craft shops and wine bars, tourists travel to the vineyards where they have the chance to taste local delicacies, such as Olive Oil, honey, bread and cheeses.

To promote the potential of the Livorno territory, as an alternative to the classic Tuscany tour, Porto 2000 presented at Seatrade Cruise Med (in  Tenerife, Canaries ) a new marketing project called "Why Livorno", which was launched at Seatrade Cruise Global (in  Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA ) in March 2017.

15 Best Things to Do in Livorno (Italy)

Although not one of the most populous, Livorno is one of the most important cities in Italy and is the capital of the Province of Livorno. Its main source of economy is its huge port and Livorno indeed has the third largest port in the country. Furthermore, its port plays host to a variety of cruise ships that dock and offer their guests a chance to see mainland Italy.

The region of Livorno has shown signs of inhabitation since the Neolithic period and due to its coastal location in central Italy, it has always been an important city. During the Renaissance and the rule of the Medici family, Livorno was fortified and received many towers, forts and city walls to aid its defence. Much of these defences remain today and you can still see the pentagonal shape of the old historic city center.

As time progressed, the city expanded and today it has a beautiful contrast of old and new, together with the industrial nature of the port. Although many people pass through Livorno to get to Pisa, it is a fantastic destination in its own right and has a great deal of historical sites and beautiful coastline that are waiting to be explored.

Here are the best things to do in Livorno :

1. Fortezza Nuova

Fortezza Nuova

Constructed in the mid to late 1500’s, the New Fort was an addition to the defences of Livorno and served as a second fortification in conjunction with the old fort.

Featuring a typical pentagonal style with a series of pointed battlements, the fort is an imposing structure that is surrounded on all sides by the canal.

Surrounded by ancient walls, much of the defensive features stand intact such as the gun ports, whilst in the centre of the fort is a beautiful garden and grounds.

Today it is possible to walk through the grounds, explore several of the forts passages, and walk the battlements for beautiful views of the canals and the city.

2. Livorno Port

Livorno Port

The port of Livorno is a truly impressive and monumental site and it is one of the busiest and most productive ports in Italy.

Stretching from the quiet harbour at the Livorno Aquarium, to the opening of the canal that eventually joins to the river Arno, the port  has a mix of commercial shipping and recreational cruise terminals.

Walking through this gigantic port provides a fascinating opportunity to see how something of this magnitude operates, but also see the monolithic cruise ships as they dock and offload their thousands of passengers eager to explore.

3. Nuova Venezia

Nuova Venezia

The area surrounding the Fortezza Nuova is lovingly known as Nuova Venezia (New Venice), and this is due to the numerous canals that line the streets.

Starting at the Scali delle Ancore, you can walk around the central canal and across the bridge on Via della Venezia; from here you can admire the beautiful waterways and small sailing boats that line the canals.

Continue towards the Scali del Reugio and see the stunning Chiesa di Santa Caterina before heading on to the Fortezza Nuova.

There are numerous streets and canals to explore, but this whle area has a charming feel and is a truly magical place to explore.

4. Via Grande

Monumento Dei Quattro Mori

This wide and important street runs from the roundabout next to the port, through to the impressive Piazza della Repubblica.

Down this stretch of road, you will find a series of shops and restaurants, but also several important structures and squares.

At the western end of the Via is the Monumento dei Quattro Mori, whilst in the centre is the Piazza Grande which contains the Cattedrale di San Francesco.

As the centre of Livorno, the Via Grande is a great starting point for a tour of the city centre.

5. Terrazza Mascagni

Terrazza Mascagni

As Livorno sits on the coast, it stands to reason that it has several areas of promenade that offer amazing coastal views.

The Terrazza Mascagni is one such place and is a favourite haunt of both locals and tourists.

Located to the south of the main commercial port area of Livorno, the Terrace juts out into the sea and has a beautiful stone paved walkway that curves for some 500m.

Furthermore, the Livorno Aquarium can be found here, and there is also a series of shaded areas covered by trees, and a delightful pavilion.

The Terrazza Mascagni offers the perfect place to watch the sunset and have a leisurely walk in the evening.

6. Via Italia

Ardenza Harbour

For fantastic sea views and a breath of invigorating sea air, the Via Italia is the perfect place to walk on a sunny morning.

Stretching from the start of the port, right through to the Parco Bartolini, this road passes some amazing coastal scenery and gives you the chance to gaze out into the Ligurian Sea and marvel at the architecture of Livorno.

The most beautiful stretch can be found near the Ardenza Harbour – Here you will pass by small fishing boats and onto the stunning landscaped area of Parco Bartolini.

Along the way, you can find a number of bars and restaurants that offer fine Italian cuisine.

7. Mercato Centrale

Mercato Centrale

If you are looking for a slice of local life, the Mercato Centrale is the best place to visit.

Located on the Scali Aurelio Staffi, the enormous building stands out amidst the surrounding structures and packed within is a plethora of market stalls.

The sights, sounds and smells of this place are simply divine and you will literally not know which way to look.

Inside you can find 34 shops and over 200 different stalls that sell anything from meat, poultry, eggs, ham, cheese, bread and wine.

Aside from the main hall, there is also an outdoor area thast sells a variety of clothing, accessories and other locally sourced items.

8. Piazza della Repubblica

Piazza Della Repubblica

Livorno has several impressive historical squares, but the Piazza della Repubblica is by far the most grand.

You can find this enormous square on the edge of the Fortezza Nuova canal running parallel to the Via Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Shaped in a large oval design, two ornate marble statues stand guard at either end of the square and the surrounding buildings feature a beautiful array of colours and styles.

Several fascinating art galleries can be found here, together with a host of restaurants and seating areas – this is a great place to relax and soak up some culture and quiet.

9. Day trip to Pisa

Pisa

Pisa is one of the main reasons that people visit Livorno, and it is often used as a gateway to hop onto this famous city and then ultimately Florence.

Whilst Livorno is an amazing tourist destination in its own right, Pisa does make for a wonderful day trip and who could really pass up on the chance to see the Iconic leaning tower? Aside from the legendary Campanile, the Piazza dei Miracoli is full of historical buildings such as the Pisa Baptistery and the Pisa Cathedral.

Furthermore attractions such as the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, the Museo Nazionale and the Palazzo dei Cavalieri are just as interesting as the tower and offer a fantastic look at the history of Pisa.

10. Museo Civico

Museo Civico

Located withing the historical Villa Mimbelli and surrounded by some stunning gardens, the Museo Civivo was opened in 1994 and has a rich collection of artworks and artefacts.

Split into three separate floors, the museum houses works from notable artists including Giovanni Fattori and other Macchialiolo collegiate.

Spanning several hundred years of history, the collection offer a fascinating insight into various forms of artistry and painting styles and is a great place to visit for any art lover.

11. Meloria Islands

Meloria Islands

Located approximately 6.1km off the west coast of Livorno, Meloria is a series of rocky islands that are host to some interesting structures.

Since 2010, this area has been a protected reserve and is a popular place for swimming, diving and relaxing in the Ligurian sea.

The two islands are tiny but both have a structure on – the southern island there is a modern lighthouse, whilst on the northern island, there is an old tower that was built in the 1500’s.

Hire a boat from the port of Livorno and sail out here – you can sunbathe on the rocks or take part in a little scuba diving in the clear and relatively shallow waters.

12. Chiesa di San Ferdinando

Chiesa Di San Ferdinando

Livorno has several beautiful churches and the Chiesa di San Ferdinando is one of the most well known and a fine example of Baroque architecture.

Located on the Via della Venezia near the port and the historical Nuova Venezia, the church features a plain exterior design with an unfinished front facade.

The interior however is a total contrast and features some absolutely stunning Baroque designs.

A central basilica is detailed with ornate artwork and the columns and arches are lined with stucco decoration.

Furthermore, the marble floor features a beautiful pattern and the central altar has a myriad of sculptures and religious reliefs.

13. Fortezza Vecchia

Fortezza Vecchia

More commonly known as the old fort, this fantastic structure was constructed by Antonio da Sangallo for the Medici family during the early 1500’s.

Located on the port and harbour region of Livorno, together with the Fortezza Nuova, this defensive structure has stood proud for hundreds of years as a symbol of power of the city.

Open to the public, the fort and its grounds can be explored and the battlements and towers offer fantastic views of the port and harbour.

Furthermore, inside the grounds is the small but beautiful church of San Francisco that was added in later years.

14. Montenero Funicular Railway

Santuario Della Madonna Della Grazie

To the south of Livorno is the small town of Montenero that climbs up the side of the sprawling hills.

Here you can find a charming funicular railway that has operated for many years and snakes some 500m to the fantastic Santuario della Madonna della Grazie.

This religious sanctuary features some wonderful architecture and offers fantastic views across to the coast.

Furthermore, there are several restaurants, bars and market stalls all surrounded by charming small buildings.

Montenero provides an escape from the tourists, and the chance to see a traditional Italian town in all it splendour.

15. Calafuria coast

Calafuria Coast

Approximately 25-30 minutes to the south of Livorno, along the SS1 highway lies the charming coastal town of Calafuria.

Calafuria itself doesn’t have a great deal to offer except several campsites and beach resorts; what it does have however is a stretch of stunning coast line that is packed full of delightful rocky alcoves and hidden beaches.

If you park next to the old Torre di Calafuria, you can scramble down onto the rocks and start exploring – the locals often travel from Livorno to relax here and escape the tourists and you can find many people simply sunbathing on the rocks.

The scenery is fantastic, and the rock pools and stretches of coast are simply sublime

Will a cruise ship wait for me if I'm running late at a port stop? Here's what a captain has to say.

  • People considering cruising might wonder what would happen if they were running late to the ship.
  • In a Q&A on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, Captain Rob Hempstead shared what to do.
  • Call the ship agent if you're running late so the captain can decide if they have time to wait.

Insider Today

On March 27, eight travelers on a Norwegian cruise in Africa were stranded on the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe after their private excursion arrived back at the ship more than an hour after boarding closed. The cruisers chased the ship for almost a week before reboarding in Dakar, Senegal.

More recently, on May 13, a couple sailing in the Mediterranean with the same cruise line was left stranded in Motril, Spain, after their excursion (not organized by Norwegian) had an hour bus delay getting back to the ship due to rain,  CNN reported .

On any cruise, travelers have the freedom to experience multiple destinations on one trip with port stops where they can exit the ship and explore a new place.

But cruise ships run on a tight schedule, often only allotting passengers around seven or eight hours for a one-day stop, sometimes even less. This leaves many to wonder what happens if you're running late getting back to the ship : Will the crew wait up, or will you end up stranded, chasing the ship from stop to stop?

Will the captain wait for you?

The answer is maybe.

On an April 2022 cruise on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , Business Insider attended a Q&A with Captain Rob Hempstead, where he answered this very question.

Hampstead, who's been a Royal Caribbean captain for two decades, started his career in Alaska's fishing industry. After 14 years of fishing, he became a captain. Before Wonder of the Seas, Hampstead served as captain of seven other Royal Caribbean ships, including Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas .

The most stressful part of a cruise for the crew is getting out of the ports on time, he said, "Because the faster we go, the more fuel we have to burn."

Some people come late, and as a result, are left behind, he added.

However, this doesn't mean he won't wait for you — you just need to know what to do.

When will a cruise ship wait for passengers.

There are two instances in which the ship will wait. The first is if you're late returning from a cruise-line organized excursion. Since the excursion is supposed to only take place within the allotted port time, the ship will wait for passengers coming from a cruise line excursion that's running late.

However, if you've spent the day independently on your own, or with a private tour company, there are certain steps you must take to avoid being stranded.

If you're behind schedule, call the ship agent to alert the cruise that you're running late, he said. On Royal Caribbean cruises, this number can be found at the bottom of Cruise Compass, a daily flyer all passengers receive in their stateroom each day detailing the day's activities.

The agent may also be referred to as a port agent, according to a copy of Cruise Compass obtained by BI.

Whether the ship can wait for you, however, will depend on how late you'll be, he added.

"If I know you're 10 minutes away, I can make an educated decision about whether or not we can wait," Hampstead said. "We will wait if we can."

Of course, if that's you, you'll have to run up the dock to the ship with many passengers watching, wondering what is holding up the departure, as they quickly realize it was you. Instead, always plan your day with ample time to return to port, or better yet, book your excursions through the cruise line.

MSC Grandiosa will begin seven-night Caribbean itineraries in December 2025 for the winter sailing season while MSC Seashore remains, but sailing short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island Ocean Cay.

It’s the largest MSC ship yet to sail from the port. The Meraviglia Plus-class vessel is among the top 20 largest cruise ships worldwide at 181,541 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,334. It debuted in 2019 and features a water park, five pools, nine hot tubs, spa, the MSC Yacht Club exclusive area and a Lego partnership in its kids clubs.

One of the more dramatic features is the 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade with an LED projection screen over the length of the walkway. The ship features 10 restaurants including the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Tepanyaki and L’Atelier Bistrot.

This is its first time taking on North American duties, and its arrival coincides with the debut out of PortMiami of the MSC World America, which will be even larger.

“The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that,” said MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez in a press release. “We know people sailing from Central Florida want options, and we’re delighted to offer them two of our most modern and glamorous ships with itineraries that will appeal to everyone from first-time to seasoned cruisers.”

MSC first began sailing from the port in 2021, joining mainstays Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. It has shuffled several ships for short runs for what Rodríguez said was a taste of what MSC has to offer. That has included MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore.

The family-owned cruise line has its roots in Europe, so the line plays up its “unique international flavor” compared with the other lines, while also touting its environmental efforts such as can be found on the private Bahamas island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. It is undergoing a major expansion effort to support excursions and on-island activities.

MSC Grandiosa will trade off alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. Eastern trips will visit Nassau and Ocean Cay, Bahamas; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. Western trips will visit Nassau; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; George Town, Cayman Islands; Montego Bay and Falmouth, Jamaica; and Belize City, Belize.

“We are honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa,” said Port Canaveral CEO John Murray in the release. “Expanding their homeport fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success.”

The growing port for a time took on the title of world’s busiest cruise port after the pandemic, and while PortMiami has since retaken that title, Port Canaveral continues to expand its ship offerings.

The last sailing season saw 16 ships that either homeported year-round or sailed seasonally, and it expects that number to grow to 19 for the 2024-2025 sailing season, including the debuts of Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

Florence overview for cruise visitors to the Port of Livorno in 2023

Panoramic photo of Florence, Italy, a major destination for cruises to the port of Livorno

Essential guide to Florence for cruise passengers to Livorno in 2023: the top things to do; shore excursions and how to get to Florence on your own; where to have lunch and shop; and online tours.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 20, 2023

The medieval charm of Florence is undoubtedly the main reason why cruise ships dock at the Port of Livorno. In fact, most cruise lines promote their itineraries with Florence as a port of call - with Livorno in parenthesis (or vice-versa).

Top sites to visit on your own

Dining, lunch and quick bites, shops, shopping and souvenirs, how to get to florence on-your-own, cruise excursions and online tours.

Although most cruise passengers are aware of the fact that Florence is not by the sea, many do not realize that this famous renaissance city is located inland, 56 miles (90 km) East of the Cruise Port in Livorno.

In fact, it takes between 1h 20 minutes and 2 hours to travel between the cruise ship port and the city center of Florence. This is why most cruise ships stay at the Port of Livorno for up to 12 hours.

Naturally, a shore excursion booked onboard or with independent online tours is the most popular way of exploring Florence. But there are other ways to enjoy a day in Florence that can be more affordable and enjoyable.

Traveling by train is without a doubt the most affordable way. Hiring a Taxi is the most convenient and expensive. Renting a Car can be a challenge if you are not familiar with Italian fast driving, high traffic, and where to park in Florence.

Florence and Pisa in one Day

All cruise lines offer tours (or shorex as excursions are called when booked onboard a cruise ship) to both Florence and Pisa.

These shore excursions are very popular, but cruise passengers should know that besides being long and tiring, you will not have much time in Pisa to see more than a few attractions.

Usually, on these combined excursions, tour buses stop within walking distance of Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa so that cruise passengers can admire the vast square where the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Cemetery (aka Camposanto) are located. You will have time to walk around and even to shop for souvenirs.

Some tour guides may take you inside the Cathedral or the Baptistery but do not expect to visit all four highlights at leisure.

Certainly, you will not have enough time to walk up to the Leaning Tower, to visit museums, and even less to explore other highlights of Pisa like the Piazza dei Cavalieri.

Things to do in Florence on a cruise to Livorno

Although the historical center of Florence is not particularly large, the sheer number of great sites to visit can be overwhelming. At best, cruise passengers docking in Livorno will have up to 6 hours to explore the city and, consequently, never enough time to see it all.

Cruise excursions always try to cover some top highlights, but whatever is visited will never be fully explored.

The good news is that when traveling to Florence on your own, and especially if you have been in the city before, you will have the opportunity to focus on a few sites, enjoy lunch (or a quick bite) and even enjoy some unusual shopping.

Walking the streets of Florence is the best way to enjoy the city's ambiance in historical landmarks like the Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio or the Piazza della Repubblica.

Palaces like the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the Galleria degli Uffizi, the Palazzo Pitti are highlights amongst numerous buildings of stunning beauty most of which are home to world-famous museums.

What to see on a shore excursion

Here is a list of the top sites in Florence, which you will most probably visit on a guided shore excursion:

  • Cathedral, Bell Tower and Baptistery
  • Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi
  • Galleria degli Uffizi
  • Ponte Vecchio
  • Galleria dell’Accademia
  • St Croce Church

There so many museums in Florence that you should not attempt to visit more than one or two, and make sure to choose carefully what to see as you will not have enough time to see more than just part of a collection.

Likewise, there are so many religious sites, almost all them with something special to see, that it makes no sense to try to see it all. With so much to see in Florence, our advise is to focus on a couple of sites at best and not try to see it all.

The following are landmarks, religious sites and museums skipped by shore excursions and that you will only be able to visit if exploring Florence on your own:

  • Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens
  • San Lorenzo, Medici Chapels, Laurentian Library
  • Santa Maria Novella church
  • Santo Spirito church
  • Orsanmichele
  • Great Synagogue
  • Bargello Museum
  • San Marco Museum
  • Duomo's Museum
  • San Miniato al Monte church
  • Davanzati's Palace Museum
  • Galileo's Museum
  • Horne Museum
  • Stefano Bardini's Museum
  • Stibbert Museum
  • Marino Marini Museum
  • Salvatore Ferragamo Museum

It is quite easy to get to Florence from the cruise ship docked in Livorno as there are a few ways to do so. The Editor has used all of them repeatedly along the last two decades.

From Livorno to Florence

Traveling Time Distance: 56 miles (90km)

Many savvy cruisers will state that Shore Excursions booked with the Cruise Line are, at best, a waste of money. Other seasoned cruisers will not go on an excursion that is not organized by the cruise line. There are good arguments on both sides and, in the end, it all depends on how confident you feel to book with an online tour service like Viator or Shore Trips.

Shore Excursions

If you have never been in Florence before, all cruise lines offer basic tours of the highlights of Florence with 'Free-Time' for Lunch and shopping. Besides the combo with Pisa (already mentioned), you may choose from many other tours designed for the specific interests of the cruise traveler.

Florence on your own shore excursion

All cruise lines do offer an affordable shore excursion usualy titled "Florence on Your Own", or something similar. This is a bus transfer to Florence, but without a tour guide, so that you can explore the city at your leisure.

Independent and Local Tour Operators

IQCruising is not affiliated in any way with any of the following independent tour operators. We certainly do not endorse these organizations but believe the info (and links) on these paragraphs may be useful to make a well informed choice.

Viator offers 82 different tours out of Livorno. Shore Excursions Group has 32 Shore Excursions to Livorno's Top Destinations including Florence and Pisa. Venture Ashore is a British company offering shared tours, private tours to suit your needs and port transfers (both shared and private).

Shore Trips has been around for a long time and has a very special selection of 18 shore excursions out of Livorno (8 to Florence). Shore Excursioneer offers 20 excursions including 5 tours and transfers to Florence.

Over 800 cruises and 2.5 million cruise passengers visit Barcelona each year. The port has become quite popular with travelers. It has distinct areas that establish it as a major port. To better handle cruise crowds, Barcelona has moved cruise ships to its less central pier.

The Moll d’Adossat pier (officially, Port de Barcelona) is now the primary cruise port. This change means travelers now have a short commute to the city center. The change may seem like an inconvenience to travelers, but it also helps to avoid excessive tourism, pollution and crowds. There are seven cruise terminals within the main cruise port of Barcelona. Each terminal (A, B , C, D and E) offers its own amenities, but in general the port is quite modern and popular.

Things To Do in Barcelona

Barcelona is filled with grand architectural gems, so many tourists enjoy simply walking around. The Gothic Quarter (or Barri Gotic) is an area that is known as the heart of the old city. Many of the popular tourist’s sites in the city can be reached on foot, once travelers get to the area.

But there is plenty more for travelers to do during their short exploration of Barcelona. Some of the most popular local attractions include the Barcelona Aquarium, Maritime Museum, the Barcelona Cathedral, Casa Batlló and Park Güell. Another popular attraction is La Rambla. La Rambla is the famous Barcelona street that can help travelers get to know the local culture and provide a place to leisurely walk. The street is a nice pedestrian area filled with restaurants, vendors, bars and great photo opportunities.

Transportation

Getting to the central areas of Barcelona is not difficult for travelers since it is an easily accessible tourist destination. Cruisers should actually have an easy time getting around. There is a cruise shuttle bus (called the Blue Bus) that is dedicated for cruise passengers, which stops off around La Rambla. This bus goes between the Barcelona cruise port terminals to town and runs on a daily schedule.

Travelers should be able to catch the bus around every 15 minutes. The Barcelona cruise port can also be reached by taxi. This option is best for travelers who venture out of central areas and need transportation back to the port. The transportation system at the Barcelona port is quite efficient. So, travelers should not have problems catching a ride since buses and taxis are managed to meet the needs of visiting cruise ships.

The cruise port of Barcelona is quite popular due to its safety, amenities and convenience. Pictured: the cityscape of Barcelona with views of the beach and blue skies
