Lucinda Brand

Dutchwoman Lucinda Brand won the Internationale Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour on the back of a dominant show from her five-woman Trek-Segafredo squad.

Brand, who is the reigning cyclocross world champion, also bagged two stage wins as the American squad put on a show during the six day German race. Brand finished in the top seven on each of the six stages, winning on days three and five with late moves which gapped her rivals.

With one stage win to her credit, Belgian champion Lotte Kopecky was second overall, riding for the national team, while Danish champion Emma Norsgaard’s opening day victory saw the Movistar rider take third.

After a spring blighted by sickness, the race also saw a return to action for Lizzie Deignan. Active on stage one, she was the final helper for Brand and finished ninth overall 1-26 down.

Her compatriot Anna Henderson (Jumbo-Visma) was also aggressive throughout the week, bagging four top 10 finishes and closed the race in 25th overall, some 6-28 down, most of that time lost on stage three.

How it happened

The six-day race takes place in the German state of Thüringia to the west of Leipzig, in an area that was, until 1990 part of East Germany.

The race’s first edition was before reunification, in 1986, and since then it has only missed three years, 1990, ’91 and last year because of the pandemic. Names like Nicole Cooke, Judith Arndt and Emma Johansson are among the winners of the previous 32 editions, though in recent years home riders have been successful.

Current German champion Lisa Brennauer won in 2017 and ’18 and Kathrin Hammes was the defending champion, both riding for Ceratizit-WNT at this year’s race.

Hammes was particularly active on the 88.9km opening stage around the small town of Schmölln, making her way into two breakaways and taking the Queen of the Mountains jersey and working hard to hold it to the end.

It was a late break that took the honours, 17 women fighting for the win, with Danish champion Emma Norsgaard (Movistar) continuing a magnificent start to the year by winning the sprint, and taking the yellow jersey.

For stage two, the race headed west to Gera for another aggressive, dynamic day of 125.1km, in which some of the participating club teams were particularly active, forming part of two breakaways.

Neither were ever likely to stay away though, and the race re-formed for a bunch kick, won by DSM’s Dutch sprinter, Lorena Wiebes, though Norsgaard was second and retained the overall lead.

Starting and finishing on what was Germany’s oldest street motor racing circuit in Schleiz, the 116.5km third stage was another opportunity for the local teams, with RSG Gießen Biehler placing two women in the day’s escape. Also there was Caroline Andersson (Coop-Hitec Products) and Kirsten Wild (Ceratizit-WNT), one of the pro peloton’s strongest sprinters.

While the Dutch rider drove the break along they were caught with a little more than 16km remaining, Lucinda Brand (Trek-Segafredo) and Liane Lippert (DSM) countering soon after. Brand went solo with 500m to go, taking the stage, though Norsgaard sprinted to second place, retaining the overall lead.

Stage four was a fast and frantic affair, no break able to go clear until over 45 of the 101km were done. Then 11 women built an advantage of over two minutes, but with Movistar leading the bunch behind, they were brought back.

The race finished at the top of the Hanka-berg, named after 1999 race winner, former world time trial champion and local rider Hanka Kupfernagel. Over one kilometre at an average of 9 per cent saw Norsgaard slipping back, and though it was Lotte Kopecky who won the stage, Brand was second, assuming the race lead.

Over 143km and with more than 1,900m of climbing made stage five the hardest. Starting and finishing in Weimar, the day’s break went clear with 10km done, Lisa Klein (Canyon-SRAM) and 2017 world champion Chantal Van den Broek-Blaak (SDWorx) getting away, eventually extending their lead to 3-30.

However, with Movistar and DSM taking control of the bunch they entered the final 20km with a reduced advantage and were caught with 12km to go.

Numerous attacks peppered the hilly final, but after being set up by team-mate Deignan, Brand launched a solo move, having on to win by six seconds, extending her overall lead to 17 seconds ahead of Sunday’s final stage.

Like all the previous stages the final day began and ended in the same place, this time in Gotha, a city of 40,000 people just west of state capital Erfurt.

Just under 100km, the stage began in frantic style, though Elena Cecchini (SDWorx), Neve Bradbury (Canyon-SRAM) and Karlijn Swinkels (Jumbo-Visma) eventually got away, though they were never allowed too much leeway and were caught inside the closing 10km.

Numerous attacks characterised the final few kilometres but a bunch sprint was inevitable, Wiebes taking her second stage win of the week on the uphill finish.

Though Brand finished two seconds down, in sixth place that was enough for her to take the overall.

Lilia Vu Wins Meijer LPGA Classic in a Playoff

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Lilia Vu won the Meijer LPGA Classic in a playoff Sunday in her return from a back injury, spoiling Lexi Thompson's bid for her first victory in five years.

Playing for the first time since the Ford Championship in late March in Arizona, Vu beat Thompson and third-round leader Grace Kim with a 5-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole — the par-5 fourth at tree-lined Blythefield Country Club.

A former No. 1 player and double major winner last year, Vu won for the fifth time on the LPGA Tour.

“I think this is the most meaningful win, because there was a time two months ago where I was just crying on the range not being sure if I would every play a tournament again without pain,” Vu said. “Like to be here today, it’s just incredible.”

Thompson, the 2015 winner, has said this will be her last year playing a full schedule. She won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June 2019.

“It was an amazing day out there,” Thompson said. “The golf is one thing, but just to be able to play in front of all amazing fans, especially coming down the stretch and on the playoff holes. I don’t think I’ve heard cheers like that unless it’s like Solheim Cup.”

Vu birdied the par-5 18th in regulation for a 7-under 65, then twice more to match Thompson and Kim — who entered the day five strokes ahead of Thompson and eight clear of Vu — on the first two playoff holes.

“I wasn’t thinking about winning,” Vu said. “I was thinking about shooting 8 under to make top 10.”

On the deciding hole, the 27-year-old former UCLA star hit her second shot into the bunker to the right of the green and blasted out to set up the birdie. Thompson and Kim missed long birdie tries after laying up following errant drives.

“Ended up in the bunker and made up-and-down, and somehow I’m here with the trophy,” Vu said.

Vu birdied four of the last six holes in regulation to match Thomson and Kim at 16-under 272.

“Obviously, coming back from an injury I was a little up in the air not knowing my swing,” Vu said. “I was just trying to make contact today. That’s it.”

The eight-stroke comeback is the largest of the season, one more than Linnea Strom overcame last week in the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Thompson closed with a birdie for a 68.

“I still have about 10 or so events after this one, so a lot of golf to be played,” Thompson said. “I want to finish strong. Every time I tee it up I want to win. I think that’s everybody’s goal out here.”

Kim shot 73. The 23-year-old Australian won in a playoff last year in Hawaii for her lone LPGA Tour title.

Ally Ewing was fourth at 15 under after a 69. Allisen Corpuz and Narin An were 14 under, each shooting 70s.

Top-ranked Nelly Korda left Friday after missing her second straight cut following a stretch of six victories in seven events. She won at Blythefield in 2021 at a tournament-record 25 under.

The major KPMG Women’s PGA Championship begins Thursday at Sahalee outside Seattle.

Stage 4: Lotte Kopecky wins Tour of Britain Women as Roseman-Gannon takes final stage

Double-stage winner Lotte Kopecky finished fourth in the final stage to win the Tour of Britain Women with 17-second gap on Anna Henderson (Great Britain). Her SD Worx-ProTime teammate Christine Majerus took third.

On a rainy day, Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) managed to break through the SD Worx-ProTime stranglehold to win the fourth stage but it was a close one. After being led out by her teammates, Majerus started her celebration early as Roseman-Gannon pipped her on the line in the bunch sprint.

Stage 3: Lorena Wiebes wins sprint

SD Worx-Protime continued their domination of Tour of Britain Women, taking a third back-to-back win, this time with Lorena Wiebes taking the bunch sprint by a bike length. Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) was second, and Georgia Baker (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) rounded out the podium.

Stage 2: Lotte Kopecky takes back-to-back wins on stage 2 ahead of Henderson

Lotte Kopecky made it two wins in a row when she outsprinted Anna Henderson after the two riders escaped the peloton in the final kilometre. Kopecky's teammate Lorena Wiebes took third in a reduced bunch sprint.

Stage 1: Lotte Kopecky given opening stage victory in photo finish over Paternoster

An elite breakaway escaped on the opening stage of the revived Tour of Britain Women, with World Champion Lotte Kopecky narrowly holding off Letizia Paternoster to take the first leader's jersey of the 2024 edition.

Tour of Britain Women Overview

British Cycling has taken over the newly-named 2024 Tour of Britain Women held from June 6-9, 2024.

SweetSpot, the former organisers of what was 'The Women's Tour' entered liquidation after financial difficulty and a trail of debts. Although it was initially unclear whether the event would be held in 2024, it was later confirmed under the organisation of British Cycling but has been reduced from six days to four.

The Women's Tour began in 2014 and has been part of the Women's WorldTour since 2016. However, the event was  cancelled in 2020  and  postponed  until later in the year in 2021.

The race held all six stages in 2022, and the last overall winner was Elisa Longo Borghini.

The  Women's Tour was cancelled in 2023 due to increased running costs and a lack of sponsorship.

Join Cyclingnews for coverage all four days, and check in after each stage for our full report, results, gallery, news and features.

Tour of Britain Women History
