Gotthard Panorama Express: Lucerne to Lugano by Scenic Boat and Train

Gotthard Panorama Express: Lucerne to Lugano by Scenic Boat and Train

The scenic train ride from Lucerne to Lugano on the Gotthard Panorama Express route was a highlight of my train trip to Switzerland .

Read more about this scenic Swiss train ride and the Wilhelm Tell Express as I share my experience on the boat and this fantastic train ride through the mountains.

Located in the heart of Switzerland, lovely Lucerne is situated at the Vierwaldstättersee, or in English: Lake Lucerne. A connection from northern Switzerland to Lugano and Italy in the south has long been Europe’s desire. The Gotthard tunnel was a historic feat of engineering. Digging a tunnel underneath the mighty Alps, to connect Lucerne with Lugano was a triumph.

The scenic Gotthard Panorama Express tells you the story of the history of Switzerland and this important connection.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Gotthard Panorama Express

The Gotthard Panorama Express is a scenic boat and train ride operated by SBB, the Swiss railway company. The route goes from Lucerne, via boat to Flüelen, where you board the train to Bellinzona or Lugano. You can take the train in both directions and it is operated Tuesday to Sunday, once daily from mid-April to mid-October (always check before you go).

The boat from Lucerne to Flüelen is a steamboat that takes 3 hours to complete. You’ll crisscross Lake Lucerne and stop at several lakeshore villages.

Once in Flüelen, the luxurious train with bright panoramic windows will pick you up and take you through the Alps and the Gotthard tunnel to southern Switzerland. Unesco World Heritage packed Bellinzona or lovely Lugano will be the end of the line.

William Tell Express

So.. what is the William Tell Express then (or Wilhelm Tell Express in German)? Basically, it is exactly the same as the Gotthard Panorama Express, only the fancy marketing name. I didn’t actually get why this name was mentioned, because while traveling on the Gotthard Panorama Express, I didn’t encounter the name often. But after reading this great article about the history of William Tell , things make perfect sense.

When you’re on the steamboat from Lucerne to Flüelen, it is nice to pay attention to the speaker. He points out several points of interest along the route (in several languages). Among them is famous Rütli where the Federation of Swiss states was born and the boat ride ends near Altsdorf, where legend has it, Wilhelm Tell shot the apple from his son’s head.

But, for ease of communication, I’ll just use the name Gotthard Express train from now on, although it is exactly the same as the William Tell Express.

Lucerne to Lugano Switzerland

Lucerne to Lugano has historically been an important route. The pass through the Alps connects not only northern Switzerland with the south, but it is also a major route from Northern Europe to Italy and further south.

During our 2-week train tour around Switzerland , we didn’t really need to go anywhere. The destination was not the objective, just riding the rails through Switzerland was most important. But I get why the rail route between Lucerne and Lugano is so important. Situated on both sides of the Alps, they seem two worlds apart.

German-speaking Lucerne with her green Alpine meadows. Cross the mountains and you’ll arrive in Italian sparkled Lugano. Both are in Switzerland and connected via the Gotthard Pass, otherwise, they would have nothing in common.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Boat Trip on Lake Lucerne to Flüelen

The boat leaves a few minutes after 11 am and the boarding was quite hectic. We arrived quite late and we couldn’t find a good spot to sit anymore. We wandered around the boat, trying to avoid the fierce sunlight on the lake.

With a last honk of the horn, the steam-powered wheels of the boat set in motion. Moving the water with large paddle wheels, we quickly moved along the shore of Lucerne. I was surprised by how fast we were moving. Soon, Lucerne was nothing but a skyline in the distance. We passed the impressive Mt. Pilatus which we just visited the day before .

We stopped at several places along Lake Lucerne. The boat ride takes almost 3 hours and we passed major stops like the start of the Rigi Bahn to climb Mt. Rigi and we passed Rütli, where Switzerland as a nation was born.

On board the ship, there are restroom facilities and a restaurant. You can enjoy a big lunch or just enjoy the views of the lake on deck. I absolutely loved our boat ride. The weather was extremely nice, the mountains in the distance and the green hills in front of us. The water looked like a flat canvas, which we rippled apart, casting different shades of color on the water.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Gotthard Panorama Express train

As we arrived in Flüelen, there were only a handful of people left on the boat. We collected our bags and walked the few hundred meters to the train station. We were already greeted by the train operator who pointed us to the right platform. After a bit of delay, the luxurious glass-domed carriages pulled in the train station of Flüelen.

The Gotthard Panorama Express train was here! We quickly found our reserved seating and I was all giddy and excited about the train, the views and the train personnel who were extremely welcoming. We got a welcome package with a free postcard (including postage) that the train conductor would post for us.

The train is just marvelous! The huge glass domed windows give you almost 180 degrees views across the landscape. The seats were super comfortable and every now and then, the information system shared little facts about the history and the build of the Gotthard tunnel.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Wassen Church

Throughout the route from Lucerne to Lugano by train, there are several loops in the route. You think: haven’t I seen this before? But the loops are necessary because the train has to overcome big altitude differences. One famous and exciting stretch of the Gotthard train route is around the town of Wassen.

You’ll arrive in Wassen at a normal level. Here, you’ll almost pass the famous church of Wassen from ground level. You can look up to the little church as it is situated on a hill. As the train leaves the village of Wassen, it climbs to a higher altitude in a loop, passing the town and church of Wassen for a 2nd time. Now we’re a little above the church of Wassen.

After another loop through one of the tunnels, we pass Wassen a 3rd time. This time we’re high above the church and have the best views of the town of Wassen.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Gotthard Pass

The Gotthard Panorama Express route passes the Gotthard tunnel right after Wassen. Completed in 1882, the Gotthard tunnel was a stunning masterpiece of engineering. Digging from both sides, the crews met in the middle, only centimeters apart!

The 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) long Gotthard tunnel is not so interesting. As you pass it by train, it is just a long stretch of darkness. However, when you ride the Gotthard Panorama Express train through it, lights are dimmed, the train slows down and you’ll learn all kinds of information about the build from the commentary. On the walls of the tunnel, a projector shows ‘graffiti’ and images of that time. I found it fascinating!

Gotthard Panorama Express to Lugano

Once we left the darkness of the Gotthard tunnel, we arrived in a different world! Was this still the same country? The houses had different colors, their architecture was different and clearly, they used different building materials. It looked like Italy. People speak Italian Swiss here and it feels like Italy.

On the Gotthard Panorama Express train, we passed some pretty amazing waterfalls in the distance, before we arrived in Unesco World Heritage site Bellinzona. This city has 3 castles and connecting walls. The train stopped briefly here before we continued to Lugano.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Things to do in Lugano

After just 2.5 hours since Flüelen, the train arrived in Lugano. I cannot believe our ride on the Gotthard Panorama Express was over already. What took us almost all day (11 am till 4.30 pm) felt like a blink of an eye.

As we left the train station of Lugano, we could look down on the town and the lake. How exciting! We only had 1 evening and 1 full day in Lugano but here are some ideas for things to do in Lugano:

  • Climb Monte Bre . This hill across from Lugano is known for its lovely nature and old mansion-style houses. The view from the top is amazing.
  • Monte Generoso round trip ticket by cogwheel train. Buy your ticket here.
  • Climb San Salvatore. We climbed up with the cable car and walked down to Morcote. This can also be booked as a tour, find out more here .
  • Take a boat tour around Lake Lugano to Morcote
  • Walk from Lugano to Gandria with this lovely walking tour
  • Explore the old town on foot with a local
  • Self-guided foodie exploration tour of Lugano. Find out more here.

San Salvatore Lugano

On our one day in Lugano, we never made it downtown. A bit sad, but we wanted to go up and enjoy the views. We took the cable car up to San Salvatore. The funicular was really close to our hotel (and Lugano-Paradiso train station).

Once at the top, we enjoyed the 360 degrees view of Lake Lugano all the way into Italy. What stunning views! It was a bit hazy, so we couldn’t see all the tiny little houses, but that just added to the majestic view from the top!

We followed the path down the hill to the village of Carmona. As I’m terrible at walking downhill on unstable soil, it took forever. The walk is supposed to take 1 to 1.5 hours, but we managed to take almost 3 hours. After a refreshing drink, I decided to take the bus as my boyfriend continued for another 2.5 hours to Morcote.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Morcote near Lugano

The old village of Morcote is packed to the brim with charming little (art) shops and shore side restaurant. We saw little rowing boats coming in from across the lake. They have a huge botanic garden and you can take a boat back to Lugano. As the rain was coming in quickly, we took the bus back to Lugano.

All in all, a super nice day hike from Lugano with amazing views. Easily accessible from Lugano and also easy to navigate thanks to the great signage on the route.

Tips for the Gotthard Panorama Express train

Because the Gotthard Panorama Express train journey consists of a boat ride and a train ride I have some practical tips for this journey from Lucerne to Lugano.

Prices for the Gotthard Panorama Express

The flat rate of a one-way adult ticket for this scenic boat and train ride is CHF 75 (2nd class) or CHF 150 (1st class) per person. This consist of the boat ride, the train journey, and the booking fee.

This is a lot of money and my top tip is to research any discount tickets or options. For example the half fare card of the Swiss railway. (Which, duh, cuts the price in half). Or opt for the Swiss pass (travel 100% free) or Interrail or Eurail tickets where you only need to pay half price for the boat ticket.

For everyone traveling on the railway journey (from Flüelen to Lugano, or a part of this) mandatory reservation cost is needed. If you can’t purchase online, you must pay to the personnel aboard the train.

Seasonal discount tickets and discounts for children, elderly, groups and students apply. Always research the best option for your situation.

  • Click here for Eurail (non-EU citizens)

Where to sit on the Gotthard Panorama Express?

If you take a scenic train ride like this, you want to have the best views possible! Have no fear, the train has glass domed windows, so there isn’t really a wrong side to sit.

As we left Flüelen for Lugano, we sat on the right side of the train (driving direction) and we had the best views. We passed the Wassen Church 3 times, so you’re bound to sit on the best side at least once. The other viaducts and overpasses were on the right of the train, so we got excellent views here.

The different waterfalls are mostly located on your left, so there is plenty to see on that side too. Of course, when you travel from Lugano to Flüelen, everything is vice versa.

Where to sit on the boat?

Well, this was tricky. We arrived very late (still on time) but the boarding was already in progress for quite some time. As it was busy, all good spots (in the shade) were already taken.

So my top tip for the boat ride: be there early so you can find a good spot to sit.

But have no fear, after the first half hour, the boat has docked a couple of times already and many people leave the boat early. This allows you to walk around more freely and choose a spot that you like best.

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Interact with others

The Gotthard Panorama Express is a tourist journey. We sat in first class and everyone on the boat and the train were tourists. Now, it can be fun to make new friends, but we enjoyed very much to interact with the personnel on the train.

Each carriage has a sort of tour guide that alerts you of major landmarks you’re passing, either by pointing them out outside or help you find them on the map. They will make sure you’ll have a good journey aboard the train and help with anything you might need (within reason).

Our train crew was very valuable as he had an abundance of knowledge about the build of the Gotthard tunnel and it was very easy to interact with him as he’d been around the world.

Short on time? Best of both worlds

If you’re very short on time and want to get as much scenic Swiss train travel in your itinerary as humanly possible, you can take the Gotthard Panorama Express and switch halfway for the Glacier Express. If you board the train in Flüelen, you can get off at Göschenen, take a cogwheel train to Andermatt and ride the Glacier Express to St. Moritz (or to Zermatt, depending on the direction you’re going).

Gotthard Panorama Express train from Luzern to Lugano in Switzerland is also named William Tell Express (Wilhelm Tell Express). I explain what it is like to travel on this train and how you can arrange it yourself!

Use all the information that is available

The Gotthard Panorama Express is not a time to doze off and catch up on some sleep while you travel from Lucerne to Lugano. Both aboard the steamboat as the train, you’ll find all kinds of information available.

The boat is an original paddle steamboat, you can find information about the mechanism and the operation at different places of the boat. It is fun to watch and learn.

Aboard the train, you’ll get a nice printed booklet, but there is also a commentary on the train. You can also download the Gotthard Panorama Express App on your smartphone (from the Apple store here and Android here .)

Check the schedule

Unfortunately, (but logically) the Gotthard panorama boat and train don’t run year round. A few days in Spring and then the schedule starts the second half of April till mid-October (roughly). Always check locally what times and dates are applicable.

The Gotthard Panorama Express runs only once per day, Tuesday to Sunday. Miss the boat (or the train), then you have to go another day.

So, can you not travel by train from Lucerne to Lugano in winter? Or at other times of the day? Of course, you can! There are trains that run frequently between Lucerne and Lugano. Either direct or via Arth-Goldau. They are even faster (approximately 2 hours) and go through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

But, no boat, no panoramic windows, no train steward or commentary. The Gotthard Panorama Express is not the fastest or cheapest way to travel from Lucerne to Lugano. But it is the most scenic way and in my opinion, not to be missed if you like history, culture and beautiful landscapes.

My wife and I are planning a 4-week trip beginning in Puglia, Italy, and making our way by train to Lake Maggiore. From there we are considering crossing over to Lugano and on to Lucerne, ending in Zurich. The train and boat ride you described sounds pretty exciting.

I am assuming that we can catch the GPE train from Lugano to Flüelen and by boat to Lucerne.

How can we get tickets for the Gothard Panorama Express Train that goes from Lugano to Flüelen? And tickets for the boat trip from Flüelen to Lucerne?

We enjoyed the Oslo to Bergen scenic train journey that crosses the Hardangervidda National Park a few years ago. The Lucerne-Lugano scenic experience you so vividly described has piqued our interest and want to learn more.

Whatever info and advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Hi John. That sounds like a pretty amazing itinerary. I’m sure you’ll love it. You can search for Gotthard panorama express sbb in google, then you’ll get to the right page on the SBB website to book the boat + train together. Enjoy the journey!

Milan to Lugano

Brimming with excitement for the day ahead, you'll meet your guide and fellow group members at Milan's Porta Garibaldi Train Station early in the morning. Shortly after 8:30 am, once everyone is settled into their seats in a comfortable air-conditioned coach, you'll weave your way out of Milan just as it wakes up around you and set your sights on Switzerland.

The hour-long drive to Lugano will quickly pass as you enjoy picturesque views and listen as your guide shares stories about the many celebrities who frequent this charming town, lured by its sweeping vistas and the allure of exclusive shopping.

Once you've arrived in Lugano, aptly named the "Monte Carlo of Switzerland," you'll have free time to explore at your leisure. Opt to grab a piping hot coffee at one of the charming cafés, and be sure to head inside a few of the many boutique shops, which are full of rich Swiss chocolate and fine goods. Art and architecture enthusiasts should also head inside the Santa Maria degli Angioli Church to admire the magnificent 'Passion and Crucifixion' fresco, created by Da Vinci's apprentice, Bernardino Luini.

At a pre-designated time, reunite with your group at the coach, ready for a picturesque journey to Bellagio. Once there, set out on a self-guided tour. For insider tips on the best dining spots, vistas, shops, or tucked-away treasures, your guide is a wealth of knowledge. Or, simply wander along the cobbled lanes and see what little-known wonders you can uncover. Either way, there’s no doubt the best way to experience Bellagio’s refreshing alpine air and elegant atmosphere is on foot or with a coffee in hand.

After exploring Bellagio and admiring the turquoise waters of Lake Como from shore, you’ll be ready to leave land behind and embark on a scenic cruise. Depending on the season, you’ll experience either a 2-hour cruise (April to October) or a 50-minute cruise (November - March), both of which give you ample time to spot iconic villas from films like Star Wars and James Bond and the much-talked-about residence of George Clooney.

Throughout the cruise, you can also head to the onboard restaurant to grab yourself a snack and refreshing drink. But all too soon, you’ll have arrived back on the shore of Lake Como, where your bus will be waiting to transfer you back to Milan.

From March 18th, 2024, the ferry cruise will be replaced by a 1 hour private boat trip

Great tour to see lots of Italy

our tour guide was wonderful. She was very informative, but also let us have time to explore ourselves. This company is better than others. We have previously toured with definitely suggest booking with them.

Jo was fantastic made it a great experience However the boat was way over crowded and very uncomfortable was not able to see what Jo was talking about most of the time which was very unfortunate so since this happened definitely not worth the purchase price.

A Weekend Guide to the Italian-Swiss Region of Ticino

Known as Switzerland’s “Little Italy,” Ticino exudes la dolce vita.

lugano tour train

Switzerland is known for its natural beauty and sweeping vistas, with picturesque small villages dotted throughout the country making it one big outdoor playground. Situated between the Swiss Alps and Lake Maggiore, Ticino is a breathtaking canton (or state) in the south, oozing with charm as it blends beautiful landscapes with an Italian flair.

Ticino is Switzerland’s sunniest region, with over 2,170 hours of sunshine per year. That translates to a near-perfect Mediterranean climate , farm fresh food and locally-produced wine, and lush gardens.

Known as Switzerland’s “Little Italy,” Ticino is an Italian-speaking area and has a decidedly Italian atmosphere—but without all the tourist crowds and over-the-top villas. The Swiss Riviera exudes la dolce vita , and it’s the kind of destination that makes you want to stay a while. Luckily, there’s plenty to see and do.

In Lugano, a city in Ticino often compared to Lake Como, you can stroll along the elegant promenades, visit world-class museums such as the Museo d'arte della Svizzera Italiana , and enjoy gourmet dining with lakeside views. In Bellinzona, the capital of the canton of Ticino, you’ll be transported to a historic town while exploring three UNESCO World Heritage-listed castles (Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro). Whether you are looking for outdoor adventure, arts and culture or epicurean delights, Ticino has something for every type of traveler.

Here’s your ultimate travel guide to help you navigate this slice of Swiss paradise.

The Ultimate Ticino, Switzerland Travel Guide

Grand hotel villa castagnola, hotel eden roc, ascona, hotel splendide royal, ristorante della torre, ristorante arté al lago, ristorante le bucce di gandria, brissago islands, parco ciani, corte del vino ticino, parco scherrer, swissminiatur, museo d'arte della svizzera italiana, getting to ticino.

The best way to get to Ticino is through the Swiss Federal Railways (or SBB). The national transportation operator runs several trains and buses around the clock within Switzerland and Italy to the Ticino region.

For a more scenic but slightly longer route to Ticino, opt for one of the transportation options (a combination of trains, buses and boats) that not only connect from major Swiss cities, but also offer panoramic views: Bernina Express, Palm Express, Gotthard Panorama Express, or Lötschberg-Centovalli Express which includes Lago Maggiore Express. Panoramic train rides are a unique experience in Switzerland and should be on your itinerary. We recommend the Bernina Express, the highest railway line in the Alps, which means exceptional views and a short stop at Alp Grüm train station for photos. The train passes through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges including the Rhaetian Railway, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Every Swiss canton is unique, and with a seamless and sophisticated public transportation network of trains, buses, funiculars and boats, it’s easy to get around and do day trips. If you’re traveling throughout Switzerland for more than a few days, the Swiss Travel Pass is a must (starting at 244 CHF for a 3-day pass). The all-in-one pass, available only to visitors, grants unlimited access to premium trains, buses and boats throughout the country. It also gives you complimentary admission to over 500 museums.

Where to Stay

  • Viale Castagnola 31, 6906 Lugano, Switzerland

The 19th-century villa turned family-owned boutique hotel is an enchanting escape, heavy on the charm and warm hospitality. The property boasts 72 sun-kissed rooms and suites, with select accommodations featuring balcony doors overlooking the hotel’s grounds, bronze art sculptures and San Salvatore mountain in the distance. You’ll be tempted to burn off your breakfast with a game of tennis on the clay courts or swim laps in the heated indoor swimming pool, but a dip in Lake Lugano is more likely. The Lido Club, a private sundeck terrace overlooking the Gulf of Lugano, is furnished with comfortable lounge chairs so you can work on your tan while ordering light bites and sandwiches from Le Relais, the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Cars are no longer allowed on property in order to offer a more exclusive and quaint guest experience.

  • Via Albarelle 16, Ascona, Switzerland

This five-star palm tree-lined hotel is tucked away at the end of the cafe-lined promenade in Ascona, a small town on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Home to La Brezza, a two Michelin-star restaurant, and four other dining outlets that all have vegetarian menus, Hotel Eden Roc is a serene lakefront property that offers multiple pools, a spa that uses only organic or certified natural products, and a private beach and marina with plenty of water activities including wakesurfing, water skiing, paddleboarding and banana boats to explore the lake. The accommodations at this property, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, are a quiet respite from the crowds that flock to the promenade, but if you crave more action you can visit the hotel’s bee hive and harvest liquid gold, go paragliding from Locarno’s mountains, or embark on a bicycle tour around Ticino with the help of the hotel’s concierge.

  • Via Guidino 29, 6900, Lugano, Switzerland

Soak in the views from this aptly-named modern boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Lugano. Surrounded by mountains, this five-star retreat is designed to resemble a giant yacht, and epitomizes sophistication with its sleek interiors and attention to detail. Various types of wood materials, including teak finishes, and earth-toned colors are used in the 18 guestrooms to bring elements of the outdoors inside. Elevate your sleep with a customized selection from the pillow menu, which includes feather-free, memory or thermoregulatory options. And when you are ready for a daytime adventure, take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary electric Smart car or bike and explore nearby towns such as Gandria or Bellinzona.

  • Riva Antonio Caccia, 7 - 6900 Lugano, Switzerland

Located in the heart of Lugano, this 19th-century historic gem exudes timeless elegance with classic guest rooms that offer excellent views of the lake and nearby mountains. I Due Sud, the hotel’s one Michelin-star fine dining restaurant, captures the essence of Italian-Swiss gastronomy using ingredients such as lemon from Sorrento and alpine butter and chestnuts from Lugano to create a menu that celebrates the Amalfi Coast and Swiss Riviera. The prime location in the city center means high-end designer stores, boutique shops, and vibrant cafes are all within walking distance of the hotel. The nearby Funicolare Monte San Salvatore takes you to the top of the mountain for stunning 360-degree views of the town and lake.

Where to Eat

  • Riva da la Tor 1, 6922 Morcote, Switzerland

Nestled in the quaint village of Morcote, Ristorante della Torre offers picturesque vistas overlooking Lake Lugano. You can take a bus or taxi from Lugano to this charming lakeside restaurant, but we prefer the ferry, for a more scenic route. Enjoy a cozy meal indoors or reserve a seat on the covered terrace for prime views. • Rivetta Alfonsina Storni 1, 6900 Lugano, Switzerland

This award-winning, adults-only restaurant is a unique gastronomic experience for both art and food enthusiasts, with works by internationally renowned artists adorning the walls. Helmed by chef Frank Oerthle , the menu primarily centers around local fish, paired with an extensive wine list featuring regional and international selections. Dishes are beautifully presented with an artistic quality and impeccable service to match, with staff who are highly attentive to patrons’ needs and the possibility of a tableside greeting from the chef. The direct view of the lake sets the stage for a romantic evening.

  • Via Cantonale, 6978 Gandria, Switzerland

This restaurant is known for its rustic Mediterranean and Ticinese cuisine, highlighting what’s fresh and in season. The rotating five-course tasting menu (CHF 70) showcases the chef’s recommendations, or you can savor a variety of à la carte dishes, from pasta to freshly caught lake fish, all complemented by a curated selection of regional, small production wines meant to be enjoyed on the terrace. The owners take pride in making everything in-house, from the bread to the dessert.

  • Casella postale 714, 6612 Ascona, Switzerland

Spend a day in Ascona, just 30 minutes from Lugano by ferry. After a spritz-filled lunch at one of the bustling cafes, take a 20-minute boat ride to the nondescript Brissago Islands, comprised of two islands: Isola Piccola and Isola Grande (only the latter is open to the public). The Botanical Garden of the Canton Ticino, located on Isola Grande, is an exquisite six-acre garden that dates back to the 19th century with over 2,000 exotic flora from around the world. Take a stroll around the garden—it’s easy to linger here for hours—listening to the soundtrack of nature: birds chirping and water flowing, all while soaking in the scent of lemon trees that perfumes the air. Every corner leads you to another surprise, including Roman baths, a bamboo garden, a lily pond filled with croaking frogs and a mini-greenhouse overflowing with lush tropical plants.  The neoclassical Villa Emden, the crown jewel of Isola Grande, is a historic villa that was converted into a hotel and restaurant filled with pure-white Carrara marble and Florentine flooring. Visitors can book one of the 10 rooms or have a leisurely meal at the restaurant surrounded by the garden—a must for lunch or dinner.

  • Riva Albertolli, Lungolago, 6900 Lugano, Switzerland

This beautiful park is an urban oasis in the heart of the city, with over 15 acres of lush greenery, sculptures and fountains scattered throughout. Take a stroll or go for a jog on the scenic pathway adorned with colorful flower beds, and look out for the mysterious but idyllic iron gate. Afterward, reward yourself with a scoop (or two) of gelato at the stand stationed at the park entrance and enjoy it on a park bench overlooking the lake.

  • 6834 Morbio Inferiore, Via Ghitello 3, Mendrisio, Switzerland

Mendrisio, the southernmost tip of Ticino, is a winemaking region perfect for hiking and vino tasting. This area is known as the Tuscany of Switzerland due to its high concentration of wineries and rolling green hills. Merlot is the predominant grape grown here, but look out for white merlot, a common pale wine found on aperitif menus across the region. The best way to experience the area is a guided bike tour, where you’ll cycle through the vineyards, small villages and colorful homes. If you prefer to go at your own pace, stop by Corte del vino Ticino, inside an old mill, for a guided tasting that will take you through four unique wines accompanied by small bites, and then enjoy a farm fresh lunch paired with wine from the region at the winery’s restaurant. If you’ve had one too many glasses, check into Conca Bella Boutique Hotel, the region’s first wine hotel.

  • Riva di Pilastri 20, 6922 Morcote, Switzerland

This mystical and under-the-radar garden in Morcote, known as the Garden of Wanders, transports visitors around the world through horticultural artistry. Founded by world traveler and gardener Arturo Scherrer in the early 20th century, Parco Scherrer overlooks Lake Ceresio and is filled with miniature sculptures and gardens modeled after famous landmarks around the world. As you stroll through the garden on a moderately steep path, you’ll be rewarded with small scale figures such as the second temple of the Acropolis of Athens, the Alhambra gardens in Granada, the Arab house modeled after Palazzo Salò di Brugine near Padua, and a Lombard-Ticino house from the 1300s, an ode to the surrounding region. The hypnotizing scent and colors of exotic plants and flora including eucalyptus, lemon trees, bamboo and camellias will keep your senses awake as you catch your breath to the top.

  • 6815 Melide, Switzerland

This three-acre open-air museum in Melide, a village in Lugano, replicates over 120 prominent buildings and landmarks in Switzerland, but in a miniature 1:25 scale version. Spot the grand castles of Rapperswil, the Piazza Grande in Locarno and the Federal Parliament in Bern. The family-friendly theme park is a meticulously designed replica that also showcases Switzerland’s renowned transportation system with 18 railways, cable cars and boats that run through the park. The theme park also includes a picnic area so you can bring your own food or purchase sandwiches and snacks from the purveyor.

  • Via Canova 10, 6900 Lugano, Switzerland

Founded in 2015, Museo d’arte della Svizzera Italiana (MASI) is one the most visited museums in Switzerland, and for good reason. It is made up of two venues, the LAC Cultural Center and the historic Palazzo Reali. Both spots showcase a collection of 14,000 pieces of art that span from Renaissance to contemporary. Exhibits are constantly rotating, but the focus is always on local artists from Ticino and greater Switzerland, to emphasize the museum’s commitment to preserve the artistic heritage of the region.
