A Road Trip in Luxembourg: Free printable map for a great itinerary!

Have you ever thought of going on a Road Trip in Luxembourg? My guess is that you haven’t!!

When thinking of road trips, most of us don’t think of Europe and most of us surely don’t think of Luxembourg. Yet, Europe and small countries like Luxembourg, are ideal destinations for easy road trips. Why? For 2 reasons: they are easy to reach & to get around and they have SO much to offer! OK, that’s kind of 3 reasons! There are many more…

A Road Trip in Luxembourg: The itinerary

On this road trip in Luxembourg, you will get to see many castles. If you’ve been around, you know how much I love castles and if you haven’t been around, now, you know as well!

Since visiting too many castles can become tiring, I added on this map, my favorite hiking spots and a few extra ‘must see’.

Let’s go, shall we?!

Start in Luxembourg City and explore the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I’ll give you more details on this soon…

Hit the road, and head over to Remich to visit some wine cellars and maybe take a boat trip on the Moselle river.

From there, you can easily do a little detour to  Schengen.

Continue toward Echternach , the oldest town in Luxembourg. Visit the 7th century Abbey, the imposing Romanesque Basilica and the Roman villa.

On your way to the Beaufort Castle , go for a hike in the Mullerthal region . In Beaufort, visit both castles !

On your way to Larochette , do a little detour to see the Mullerthal waterfalls. Visit Larochette Castle .

Continue your trip toward Schoenfels castle (no visit but such a cute castle!).

If you are up for another detour, go see the Useldange Castle .

Stop by Colmar Berg to admire one of the Grand Duke residence.

Continue North and visit the Bourscheid Castle .

Stop by the Brandenbourg Castle .

Visit the Vianden Castle and the Victor Hugo Museum.

Continue your trip North to  Clervaux , visit the castle and the abbey.

It is now time to head back South. Continue your trip toward Esch sur Sûre. Enjoy the view! Relax by the lake. Consider a stop by the  Septfontaines Castle and the Koerich Castle .

Go to the Fond de Gras and travel through time on an old steam train, or visit some mines.

In Esch sur Alzette , do not miss the Red Rocks .

In Dudelange, you can visit the Mont Saint Jean Castle .

Your road trip is almost over and it’s time to get back to Luxembourg City.

If you have one more evening in Luxembourg, have diner at the Bourglinster Castle . You will not regret it!

If you wish to see pictures of such places, you can go to the Luxembourg destination page . I’ve added there a lot of pictures of the places I haven’t been able to tell you about yet.

For castles lovers

Now if you are a castle lover like I am, there is one book you should get and it is called  A Portrait of the Castles of Luxembourg . It isn’t that easy to find and cost a pretty penny but it is filled with absolutely gorgeous pictures of all the castles of Luxembourg, including the ones, you and I, can’t visit!

I got it as a gift and I love it.

luxembourg tourist map pdf

How long will it take you?

As usual it depends of your preference and style. One week would be good. 10 days would be better. I suppose you could do it in a day or 2 if you are in a rush and don’t plan to visit anything and just want to see the sites featured.

How to get the free printable version of the map?

You can click on the image above or follow this link:  Luxembourg Road Trip Map .

A new window will open with the high-resolution pdf of the map. You can save it or print it directly. If using Letter US paper, you may need to center the image to ensure nothing gets cropped.

This is completely free. Hope you enjoy!!

Some of you know this already: for every map I create, I give away some of the best original drawings! They are usually in a postcard format although my drawings are getting bigger and bigger nowadays so you could end up with an A4 original drawing!

Pretty sweet I know!

I’m not ready to give those away just yet!!

One Day in Luxembourg City – A Free Walking Tour Itinerary

Enjoy a day in Luxembourg on this self-guided walking tour of Luxembourg City. See all the city’s important sites and learn about its historic fortifications.

Table of Contents

Luxembourg City – A UNESCO Site

Luxembourg is one of the smallest and least populated countries in Europe.  Its largest city, and its capital, is Luxembourg City.  Founded in 963 due to its strategic location, the city was fought over and controlled by different European powers over much of its history.

Luxembourg City’s Old Quarters and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to the survival through a millennium of its ancient districts and some of its stone forts and casements.

Walk the city’s streets and see the partially demolished fortifications on a walking tour through Luxembourg City.

Bock promontory above Alzette river

This itinerary allows flexibility depending on the amount of time available in the city.

  • For a two-hour visit, walk our Luxembourg Walking Tour of the historic city centre.
  • For a three-hour visit, add the Pfaffenthal district and North City Centre Walk .
  • For a four-hour visit, add the Grund Walking Tour OR visit a Luxembourg Museum .

  • Chemin de la Corniche – top of the fortress walls with incredible views of the Alzette River valley.
  • Grand Ducal Palace – official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

What to See in Luxembourg City: A Walking Map

Map walking tour route blue

The best place to start a walking tour of Luxembourg City is the Place Guillaume II and the Tourist Office .

Luxembourg City Tourist Office

We recommend making this your first stop. The friendly, helpful staff will answer all your questions and provide information about what is happening in the city on the day of your visit.  They can help book a guided walk, a visit to the palace or the casemates and more.

For our self-guided walk through the city, step outside into the square.

Place Guillaume II

The central square was named for William II, King of Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, who ruled from 1840 to 1849. He granted Luxembourg its first parliamentary constitution in 1848. The square had been the location of a Franciscan church and convent for 500 years.  Today it is a central meeting place, used for markets and city events. It is the perfect place to start a city walking tour.

The equestrian statue of William II was erected in the square in 1884 .

Luxembourg City Hall

Construction of the neo-classical Hôtel de Ville began in 1830 and was completed in 1838. This was the site of a Franciscan monastery until the late 18th century. Many of the stones used for city hall construction were salvaged from the monastery’s 13 th -century convent. The lions on the front steps were added in 1938.

Exit the square by the walkway on the left side of the tourist office. Turn left onto Rue Chimay. Walk to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boulevard at the end of the street and Place de la Constitution.

Constitution Square

This city square sits on the top of the 17th century Beck Bastion, part of the city’s extensive fortifications. The Monument of Remembrance called the Golden Lady or Gella Fra is in the square.  This memorial, originally dedicated to the sacrifices of Luxembourg’s WWI soldiers, symbolizes the freedom enjoyed by Luxembourg’s citizens today. In 1940, during the Nazi occupation, the monument was pulled down. Restoration in 1984 returned it to its original splendour.

From the edge of the square, enjoy the view of the lush park in the Petrusse River Valley and the Adolphe Bridge to the west. The beautiful stone double-arch bridge was built around the turn of the 20th century during the reign of Grand Duke Adolphe.

Obelisk gold statue top 2 bronze figures base

Beside the street is the entrance into the Casemates de la Pétrusse.

Petrusse Casemates

These underground military areas were built under, and into, the original Spanish and French fortifications.

Many of the casemates were bricked up and closed after the Treaty of London in 1867, though 17 kilometres of tunnels still remained. Over the last 150 years they have been used for many things. The casements were first opened to visitors in 1933. Recently major upgrades were made to improve the safety of the casements and visitors are welcome again for guided tours.  Buy Petrusse Casemates tickets online or at the Luxembourg City Tourist Office.

The Forum of Contemporary Art is about 200 metres to the west on Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boulevard.

Cross the boulevard and walk north on Rue de l’Ancien Athénée to Rue Notre Dame. Turn right and walk about 70 metres to Cathédrale Notre-Dame’s unassuming entrance.

Notre Dame Cathedral

The church was built by the Jesuits in the 1600s. While it was built in late Gothic style architecture, many of its components and ornaments are in the Renaissance style. It became a cathedral in 1870 and was enlarged in the 1930s.  Its altar and stained glass windows are stunning.

Exit the cathedral onto Rue Notre Dame. Turn right and walk to Pl. de Clairefontaine. Turn right again and walk to the Monument à la Grande-Duchesse Charlotte.

Half circle tall windows around guilded altar and high gate

Grand Duchess Charlotte Monument

The monument was designed by Paris sculptor Jean Cardot in honour of Charlotte, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg who reigned from January 1919 to November 1964.

Walk southeast to Rue du St. Esprit. The Luxembourg City History Museum is about 40 metres to the north along Rue du St. Esprit.

Turn left and walk to Plateau du Saint-Esprit.

Saint-Esprit Square

The buildings which ring the courtyard contain the district courts of Luxembourg. Walk to the east side of the courtyard for beautiful views of Luxembourg’s Grund district and the river valley below.

The elevators in the middle of the square descend to the parking garage and a walkway leading to the street above the Alzette River.

Straight ahead, Rue Munster crosses the Grund Bridge into the Grund district. If time permits, continue straight ahead on our Grund Walking Tour .

Otherwise, turn left onto Mnt du Grund, climbing to the Spanish Grund Gate. Walk about 20 metres beyond the gate to a set of stairs on the right. Take the stairs to the Chemin de la Corniche. Turn left.

River valley buildings steep wall behind

Chemin de la Corniche

This is the top of the 17 th -century city walls built by the Spanish and the French. Its viewpoints offer splendid panoramas across the river valley to Grund’s ancient buildings and the Bock Promontory.

The pedestrian street ends at Victor Thorn Boulevard. Turn right and walk to the Bock Promontory.

Monument of the Millennium on Bock Promontory

Count Sigfried of Ardenne, the first of the Luxembourg Counts, built his fortress on top of this ridge in 963. Castle Bridge was added in 1735 linking the defences of the promontory with the rest of the city.

In 1963, Luxembourg City wanted to commemorate its millennium and chose the promontory as a fitting spot for a monument. While working on the site, the walls of the first castle were discovered.  Plans changed. The walls were partially reconstructed and restored as a very fitting way to celebrate the 1000 year anniversary.

Restored stone foundations city background

The promontory still offers the same expansive, panoramic views that it has for centuries. Look to the south over Grund. It’s the perfect spot for photos of the Wenceslas Wall , the stone Stierchen Bridge over the Alzette and Neumünster Abbey .

From Casemates Memorial Point on the north side of the promontory, see the Pfaffenthal district along the Alzette River below.

The Kirchberg plateau, to the northeast, is Luxembourg’s banking and financial centre. The Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art’s building was designed by IM Pei, designer of the Louve’s glass pyramid. The MUDAM showcases modern art, installation and experiential art, ranging from photography to fashion design. At Fort Thüngen , one of the city’s fortresses, the Dräi Eechelen Museum explores the history of the fort and Luxembourg. It focuses on the figures who’ve shaped the city and country over 500 years.

Bock Casemates

The first casemates were dug into the rock of the Bock Promontory by the Spanish in 1644. The set of rooms and passages were carved for military purposes to defend the city. In the 1680’s French engineer Vauban expanded the 23 kilometre long casements. When the Austrians ruled the city in the mid-1700s, they added even more rooms. The casemates have held everything a city needed to survive: garrisons, bakeries, slaughterhouses and acted as bomb shelters in World Wars I and II.

If time permits, enjoy our walk exploring Pfaffenthal and the northern City Centre .

Otherwise, leave the promontory and walk back to Chemin de la Corniche. Turn left onto Rue Sigefroi and see Église Saint-Michel ahead.

Saint Michael’s Church

This Catholic Church was built in the 17th century.  The site is the city’s oldest religious site, where the first church was built in 987.

At the next intersection Rue Large is on the left, the ancient fish market is straight ahead and the Luxembourg Museum of National History and Art is to the right.

Turn left onto Rue Large and then a quick right to Rue de l’Eau. Walk to Rue du Marche-aux-Herbes. Turn right and walk to the Palais Grand-Ducal.

Grand Ducal Palace

The oldest part of the palace was built in the Renaissance style and completed in the 1570s. It was added to in the 1740s. The palace was thoroughly restored in the early 1990s. During the summer, guided tours of the palace are available.

Sentries guarding palace doors

Across from the palace is a great place to end the tour, the Chocolate House Nathalie Bonn . Its “Hotchocspoons” are available in almost any flavour imaginable. Add some unique sweetness to coffee or hot milk. The patio is the perfect spot to take a break and people watch while enjoying a sweet treat.

To return to Place Guillaume II, walk north to Rue de la Reine, turn right and walk straight ahead, back to the square and the start of the walk.

Grund Walking Tour

Grund is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, dating back to the 14 th century, in the heart of the ancient fortifications.

Begin at the Grund Bridge over the Alzette River. Walk across the bridge on Rue Munster. Turn left and continue to follow Rue Munster for about 70 metres.

The National Museum of Natural History is straight ahead at the end of the street.

Turn right onto Rue de Treves and walk for about 200 metres. The buildings on the left are a former Benedictine Abbey.

Neumünster Abbey

Built in 1606, the church and its four wings enclosed an inner courtyard. The abbey ceased operation at the end of the 18 th century. The Church of St. John continued as a Catholic Church. The rest of the abbey buildings were converted for use as a military hospital and later became a prison. They reopened 2004 as a cultural and conference centre after extensive renovations.

Turn left at the eastern corner of the abbey buildings. Walk to the stone Stierchen Bridge and across the Alzette River to a stone tower and wall.

Wenceslas Wall

The wall is part of the ancient city fortifications. Originally, the wall was almost a kilometre long with 37 towers and 15 gates. Today this small remaining piece is integrated into the beautiful gardens at the base of the Bock Promontory.

Gardens ancient wall river plaza back

Follow the wall to the base of the promontory. Turn left and walk the pathway to Rue Sosthene Weis. Turn right walking under the Castle Bridge . Take the first left and climb the walkway and stairs to Victor Thorn Boulevard and Mnt de Clausen. Walk east on Mnt de Clausen to the Monument of the Millennium and return to the main Luxembourg Walking Tour .

Pfaffenthal and Northern City Centre Walk

The Pfaffenthal district was an important area to the early city’s tanners. They produced leather for the glove trade which was a huge source of income for the city. Many workshops were set up downstream of the city and close to the river, where power could be generated easily.

Begin at the Bock Promontory and walk along Mnt de Clausen and Victor Thorn Boulevard to the Spanish Turret . Walk straight ahead onto Mnt de Pfaffenthal and down into Pfaffenthal. Enjoy this quiet area.

Person buildings line road down

Continue onto Rue Laurent Ménager. Turn left on Rue du Pont, a total distance of about 700 metres.

The Ascenseur panoramique du Pfaffenthal is at the west end of Rue du Pont.

Panoramic Elevator

This glass-sided elevator carries passengers seventy-one metres between Pfaffenthal in the valley and the Pescatore Park above.

At the top, the viewing deck offers incredible 180 degree views over the valley. To the west, the 350-metre-long, red Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge stands out on the horizon. It connects the city centre to the Kirchberg Plateau straight ahead. To the east is the Bock Promontory.

Walk to the end of the hallway and exit into Pescatore Foundation Park .  Follow the path to Avenue Jean-Pierre Pescatore. Turn left and walk to Rue Willy Goergen. Turn left again, walking about 20 metres to Rue des Capucins. Turn right and walk to Église Saint-Alphonse which is on the left.

Saint Alphonse Church

The church was built in the 1850s on the site of a former convent. The stained glass windows were donated by the city’s wealthy families.

Capucins Street becomes a pedestrian-only street south of the church. It is part of a car-free area about 3 by 4 city blocks in the city centre. Enjoy a wander through its shops and restaurants.

Exterior church front door to roof top

Capucins Street ends at Place d’Armes . On the south side of the square turn left and follow Rue du Cure. Walk about 200 metres to Rue du Marche-aux-Herbes.

The Luxembourg Museum of National History and Art and St. Michael’s Church are two blocks further east.

Turn left and walk to the Grand Ducal Palace and the end of the main Luxembourg Walking Tour.

Luxembourg City Museums

The city centre has a number of excellent museums to learn about the history and art of both the country and the city.

Luxembourg City History Museum

The museum, on Rue du St Esprit just south of Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, occupies several former houses built from the 17th to 19th centuries. The buildings are ingeniously linked together over five floors with some quirky spaces to present the history of Luxembourg City. Lower levels cover its industrial, handicraft and commercial growth. Upper floors hold temporary exhibits. It is a unique presentation and well worth a visit. Allow at least an hour.

Left 4 religious sculpture right 3 candelabra

Luxembourg Museum of National History and Art

The museum’s large collection of art, archaeological artifacts and coins presents the history of the city and the Grand Duchy. It is in the historic centre of the old town, the site of the historic fish market at the corner of Rue Sigefroi and Rue Wiltheim. It is free to see the permanent collections.

Forum of Contemporary Art – Casino Luxembourg

This building was built in the late 19th century and houses the Forum of Contemporary Art. The museum was founded in 1996. Walk through the exhibits on your own or take the guided tour.

While not in the city centre, the Museum of Natural History is located in nearby Grund.

National Museum of Natural History

The museum houses the country’s most important zoological, botanical, paleontological and mineralogical collections. Only the best examples are chosen for display in its excellent exhibits. This is a great place to take the kids (and, as a bonus, they get in free).

Sightseeing tours in Luxembourg Walks to explore Luxembourg's history and architecture – and uncover some surprising secrets along the way

The many tourist routes across Luxembourg are a great way to relive the country's history, admire its architecture and find out about its industrial past. The fascinating synergy between old and new and the symbiosis of Luxembourg's urban centres with the natural world create a unique and enchanting blend.

Explore a thousand years of history

Visiting Luxembourg City is like travelling back in time. Luxembourg may be a small country, with a surface area of 2,586km2 and just under 626,000 inhabitants, but it has a rich and complex past, and its capital city sums up European history in a nutshell .

There's no better way to explore Luxembourg's eventful, thousand-year-long history than by walking one of the many sightseeing routes in Luxembourg City:

  • Wenzel Circular Walk

This route takes you on a tour of what is essentially Luxembourg's biggest open-air museum . The starting point for the 5.5km walk is the ruins of the former castle of the Counts of Luxembourg and the adjoining archaeological crypt – the birthplace of the city and the country. In three hours , you will explore the medieval ramparts and the remains of the fortress. Don't miss: the Bock Casemates .

  • Mansfeld Circular Walk

This 4.6km historical walk takes you in and around the district of Clausen , with its many architectural gems dating back to the time of Count Mansfeld, who became a prince in 1517 and was made Governor of the Duchy of Luxembourg (1540) and then of the Netherlands (1590). Follow the 'M' arrows to explore winding lanes, hidden staircases and 19th-century walls. This is a great three-hour tour with some amazing views!

  • Vauban Circular Walk

Are you a fan of military history ? If you are fascinated by the city's last fortifications – how they were built and which parts were most strategically important –, then the Vauban Circular Walk is for you. The walk is named after engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, who was responsible for the reconstruction work after the fortified city was captured by the French. The work carried out by Vauban earned the city its reputation as an impregnable fortress – it was known as the Gibraltar of the North .

Or maybe you just want to go for a walk that will give you a wonderful panoramic view over Luxembourg City? In that case, head for the Chemin de la Corniche , described as Europe's most beautiful balcony by Luxembourg writer Batty Weber. The walk takes you along the ramparts built in the 17th century by the Spanish and the French, running parallel with the Alzette valley.

UNESCO Tour for All

Did you know that the old quarters and fortifications in Luxembourg City are on the UNESCO World Heritage List ? In addition to the many existing walks and tours , two new audio guides and a brochure for people with specific needs have recently been produced to make this historical site even more accessible:

  • The UNESCO Tour for All on izi.travel is suitable for wheelchairs and prams. The tour was specially designed and tested by groups of people with specific needs. The guide is available in Luxembourgish, French, German, English, Dutch and Portuguese .
  • The UNESCO-Tour für Alle – Leichte Sprache guide uses the same route but with simplified language and sequences filmed in sign language . This tour is only available in German.
  • The UNESCO-Tour für Alle in Leichter Sprache brochure introduces visitors to the UNESCO tour in German in very clear language , using simple phrases to explain complex artefacts and events.

Nature in the city

Luxembourg City is dotted with green spaces that can also be explored on foot.

The walking tour around the Bonnevoie district leads you to the Schläifmillen artists' workshops, which began more than 30 years ago when a group of artists looking for a workspace set up in a disused industrial warehouse. As you walk along the woodland path beside the river Alzette , you will also spot the former gunpowder mill and Polfermille n spinning mill. This is a great walk to find out more about the role of textile manufacturing in the Luxembourg economy in the 19th century and to discover how cottage industries gradually developed into factories along the river's edge to make use of the energy potential of water.

Do you love roses? If so you'll want to check out the RosaLi Circular Walk . As you stroll through the district of Limpertsberg , you will find out about its rich rose-growing heritage, which led to Luxembourg becoming known as Rose Country at the turn of the 20th century.

Admire the country's architectural and artistic gems

If you are a contemporary architecture enthusiast, you will particularly appreciate the 14 tours in the architectour.lu architecture guide. In total, you'll get to see some 278 works of architecture throughout the country.

In Luxembourg City, the Kirchberg Plateau , the European quarter and business hub for Luxembourg's financial centre, is an open-air gallery for contemporary architecture. The station district and the Upper Town are also home to fine examples of Luxembourg City's architectural heritage .

You will be beaming with enthusiasm as you check out the contrasting architectural styles of the city's seven museums. the Museum(s)mile walk is a tour in the form of a smile! We can guarantee that you will be blown away by the diversity and unique nature of each one.

The history of southern Luxembourg is imprinted on the facades of the many protected buildings that make up the architectural heritage of Esch-sur-Alzette . Slip on a comfortable pair of shoes and set out to explore the open-air scenery that tells the history of the 'Forge of the South', a surprising melting-pot of European architecture. Also available as a virtual walk !

Piece together the region's steelmaking past

As you're now in the south of Luxembourg , why not take the opportunity to find out more about the region's steelmaking past ?

The Terres rouges (Red Lands) owe their name to the iron ore that was the key to Luxembourg's successful steel industry from the late 19th century onwards. In recent years, the region has transformed the relics of past industrial success into tourist facilities for the present and the future, with a host of surprising activities on offer.

You can now explore the terrace of the blast furnaces : Explore the Belval site and marvel at the modern architecture of the new buildings contrasting with the industrial heritage. The guide will explain the conception of the quarter and the conservation of the blast furnaces in the context of creating a new urban quarter. The visit culminates at the top of Blast Furnace A, which has been open to visitors since 2014. Climb the staircase alongside the former pressure reactor and read the information about the workings of the industrial plant. A breathtaking view awaits you from the top floor!

LUXEMBOURG DAY TOUR ITINERARY: 15 Things to Do & Walking Route

LUXEMBOURG DAY TOUR ITINERARY: 15 Things to Do & Walking Route

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Luxembourg is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe. But make no mistake: it has one of the the highest GDP per capita and one of the strongest passports in the world.

Its capital, Luxembourg City, is highly developed, but it still retains a countryside vibe, too. It cradles old quarters and several historic structures, earning it a place on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994.

Although spending at least a few days is ideal, it is possible to see much of what it has to offer on a day trip, especially if your base is in nearby areas in Germany, France or Belgium. The most popular attractions are clustered mostly within the Old Town center.

If you plan on visiting Luxembourg City on a day trip, here’s a list of the best places to visit, arranged itinerary-style. But before we begin, some reminders:

  • These are in chronological order, but feel free to add, remove or switch things up to suit your preferences.
  • This is a sightseeing tour itinerary. But if you wish to enter and explore any of the museums listed here, go ahead. Just make sure you start early to allow more time per stop.
  • You can cover all these on foot either on your own or by joining a free guided walking tour.
  • For more convenience, use Google Maps. Just enter the name of the site and follow directions.
  • The starting and end point for this itinerary is the Luxembourg Central Railway Station.

Now that we got ’em out of the way, let’s start!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. La Passerelle (Luxembourg Viaduct)

From the Luxembourg Central Station, you can take a short walk to the Passarelle , also called Luxembourg Viaduct or Old Bridge. It was completed in 1861 and served as a link between the city center and the central railway station.

This 300-meter-long bridge stretches over Pétrusse valley at 45 meters above the valley ground. It features 24 arches and provides a good venue for sightseeing and panoramic views of the city and the ancient walls.

Opening Hours: 24/7 Entrance Fee: FREE

2. Notre Dame Cathedral

luxembourg tourist map pdf

From the Passerelle, walk straight ahead a little bit and you’ll be greeted by the Notre Dame Cathedral , the sole cathedral in Luxembourg. This 17th-century church was originally established by the Jesuits. It was converted into a Catholic church in the 19th century.

The structural design follows the Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. It features three towers, the statue of Maria Consolatrix Afflictorum (the nation’s patron saint), glass-stained windows, and crypts that serve as the final resting spots for the late Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses of Luxembourg.

The cathedral is located along Boulevard Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Monday – Sunday). Guided tours are available on Staurdays at 11:30 AM. Entrance Fee: FREE

3. Place de la Constitution (Constitution Square)

luxembourg tourist map pdf

Just a short walk from the Notre Dame Cathedral is the Constitution Square , dominated by a towering memorial obelisk with a bronze statue, “Gëlle Fra”, holding a wreath on top of it.

Built in 1923 on the former 17th-century Beck bastion, the monument is called Monument du Souvenir (Monument of Remembrance) in honor of the citizens who voluntarily enlisted and perished during World War I. The square offers a good view of the Pétrusse Valley below and the Adolphe Bridge (New Bridge) beyond.

4. Pont Adolphe (Adolphe Bridge)

Don’t leave the Place de la Constitution without a good look at Pont Adolphe . For this itinerary, because of time constraints, you won’t go near the bridge, only admire it and take photos from this square.

Officially launched in 1903, it was commissioned during the reign of Grand Duke Adolphe. Since then, it has undergone several renovations and additions resulting in today’s double-decked stone arch bridge status.

Its total length is about 153 meters, straddling over a lush park in Pétrusse below and connecting Ville Haute (via Boulevard Royale) and Gare (Avenue de la Liberté). The top deck features a two-lane traffic road and two pedestrian paths, while the lower deck has a two-way bicycle lane that also serves as a pedestrian path. The bridge’s upper deck is expected to accommodate tram tracks in the near future. Both decks provide views of the park and the city, but the upper deck boasts an unobstructed view of the area.

5. Pétrusse Casemates

One of the key attractions beside Place de la Constitution is Pétrusse Casemates . A medieval bastion and fortress ruins in the Pétrusse Valley, it is a testament to the country’s strategic location. During the tumultuous time of conflicts between European nations, the site had been used for military purposes and had been altered many times.

In 1867, the fortress was mandated to be torn down as a sign of Luxembourg’s neutrality based on the agreements in the Treaty of London. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1994, together with the city’s old quarter.

Opening Hours: As of writing, the site is temporarily closed but you can still view it from either Pont Adolphe or Place de la Constitution. Reopening date to be announced. Entrance Fee: €4-6

6. Place D’Armes

Situated three blocks away from Place de la Constitution via Rue Chimay is the busy Place D’Armes .

Established in the 17th century, it was originally meant as a parade ground for the French garrison. It is centrally located in the old town and bordered with lime trees that trace back their roots to the reign of King Louis XIV.

Today, the square is part of the pedestrian-only zone and is surrounded by restaurants and cafés, making it a favorite meeting place for locals and visitors alike. It has become the city’s activity center where flea markets appear every second and fourth Saturday, band performances are staged during summer, and the Christmas market is set up.

luxembourg tourist map pdf

Next to it is the smaller Jan Pallach Square, which is marked by the towering Monument of Dicks and Lentz, a historic structure that pays tribute to the national poets who penned the national anthem.

7. Palais Grand Ducal

From Place D’Armes, cross the Place Guillaume II to get to the Grand Ducal Palace (Palais Grand Ducal).

luxembourg tourist map pdf

Throughout history, this 16th-century palace has always been the seat of power and the official residence of the head of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It is also the place where he works and fulfills his duties together with the Grand Duchess and their staff. Official functions are held here and foreign heads of state are welcomed during official visits.

It’s known for its beautiful facade and intricately designed and decorated interior. Guided tours are available in the summer season (July – August) where visitors have access to some parts of the palace.

Opening Hours: You can only access the palace through guided tours in summer, usually July to August, sometimes up to the first week of September. The schedule for the daily guided tours is 9AM to 5PM daily except Wednesdays, which runs from 12PM to 5PM. Entrance Fee: €12 (Adult), €6 (4-12 y/o), FREE (Below 4 y/o). You can get your tickets prior to your visit online or purchase from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office in Place Guillaume II.

8. Luxembourg City History Museum

A short walk from the Palais Grand-Ducal is the Luxembourg City History Museum . Coming from Marché-aux-Herbes Street, you will be welcomed by the museum’s glass facade.

Launched in June 1996, the museum was formed by combining four old townhouses and restoring them to incorporate modern design to the ancient architecture. It showcases permanent and temporary exhibits that relay the history of the city. All six floors display collections that communicate the evolution of the city through important documents, events, people, and things. It also features a spacious glass elevator and ancient cellars.

Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Tuesday – Wednesday, Friday – Sunday); 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Thursdays); CLOSED (Mondays) Entrance Fee: €5 (Regular), €3 (Reduced), FREE (Below 21 y/o, PWDs). Free admission every Thursday from 6PM to 8PM.

9. Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art Luxembourg

Head north via Rue du St. Esprit then Ru Large for five minutes and you’ll reach the National Museum of History and Art Luxembourg. Born out of the kindred desire of the locals to promote the city’s history, it preserves and protects historic artifacts and artworks that narrate the history of Luxembourg.

It began to take shape when the ‘Archaeological Society’ was formed in 1845, a few years after the signing of the Treaty of London, marking the nation’s independence. But it’s not until 1946, after World War II, that the museum was able to officially open to the public.

The present structure, facing the Fish Market Square, carries a contemporary architectural design.

Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Tuesday – Wednesday, Friday – Sunday); 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Thursdays); CLOSED (Mondays) Entrance Fee: Temporary Exhibitions €7 (Regular), FREE (Below 26 y/o). Free admission for permanent exhibitions and every Thursday from 5PM to 8PM.

10. Tours Vauban (Eich Gate & Bons Malades Gate)

Continue walking north until your reach Eich Gate , one of the Vauban Towers (Tours Vauban). The other is Bons Malades Gate on the other side of the Alzette Valley.

Both towers are located in Pfaffenthal village, one of the oldest districts in the city. Despite its central location, the village exudes a rural vibe with the old and new structures interweaving seamlessly along the verdant valley.

These 17th-century towers — Eich Gate and Bons Malades Gate — were jointly named after its creator, French military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The towers were part of a defense fort and were meant to delay the attacks of the advancing enemies.

The two towers are linked by a narrow bridge that presents a picturesque view of the river and the valley. You can access the bridge from either tower. If you want to learn more about these towers, there’s a small audiovisual room with a 9-minute video narrating its history at the Bons Malades Gate.

Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 5:45 PM (Audiovisual Room) Entrance Fee: FREE

11. Pfaffenthal Lift

If you decided to cross the valley all the way to the Bon Malades Gate, head back to the other side and find the Pfaffenthal Lift . You can enter “ Panoramic Elevator of the Pfaffenthal ” on Google Maps for good measure.

Luxembourg’s topography is characterized by gorges, valleys, and plateaus. To make it more accessible and navigable, the city planners saw the need to build cable transport modes to link the elevated parts of the city to both Alzette and Pétrusse valleys. Pfaffenthal Lift, together with Grund Lift and Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular, forms this triad of cable mode of transportation. The construction of the public elevator started in 2009 and officially launched to the public in July 2016.

The towering elevator features an enclosed footbridge with glass panels and flooring at the end of the bridge on the Pfaffenthal side. It connects the historic city center of Ville Haute via Parc Fondation Pescatore bicycle and pedestrian lane to Pfaffenthal Village in Alzette Valley. The footbridge offers a panoramic view of both the city center and the valley, including the road below.

Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM (Daily). CLOSED for maintenance every first Monday of the month. Entrance Fee: FREE

12. Casemates du Bock

Like Pétrusse Casemates, the Bock Casemates were built during the Spanish reign in the 17th-century. But various rulers throughout its long history benefited from the ingenuity of the defensive system.

luxembourg tourist map pdf

After Luxembourg gained its independence in the 19th century, Bock Casemates (and other fortress ruins) became inaccessible to the public until its reopening in 1933.

Currently, of the 23 kilometers total, only 17 was left but it’s still well-preserved underground. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1994.

Opening Hours: As of writing, the site is temporarily closed. Reopening date to be announced. Entrance Fee: €7 (Adult), €6 (Senior and Student), €3.50 (4-12 y/o), FREE (Below 4 y/o)

13. Chemin de la Corniche

luxembourg tourist map pdf

Just a few meters walk from Casemates du Bock, Chemin de la Corniche is said to be the best observation deck in the country, boasting a panoramic view of the Alzette Valley, the Grund, and the river canyons below.

The whole length of the footpath covers the ramparts from the Bock Casemates to the Citadel of the Holy Spirit along the Alzette Valley.

Despite its central location and proximity to the city center, the Grund strongly gives off a rural vibe. Tucked below the city center, the Grund is one of the oldest districts and is famed for its medieval structures, green spaces, and absence of tall modern buildings, magnifying the countryside feel. Its hiking trails also attract nature lovers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city center.

luxembourg tourist map pdf

It is also a popular nightlife spot with restaurants and bars. It boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants — Kamakura and Mosconi.

15. Luxembourg Railway Station (Gare Centrale)

From the Grund district, you will cross La Passerelle again going back to the Luxembourg Railway Station.

This is the main railway station of the capital city; consequently, it’s the hub for the domestic railway network and international railway connections. It links Luxembourg to its neighboring countries France, Germany, and Belgium. While waiting for your train, take the time to appreciate where you are because this is not just a simple train station; it’s also a historic site in itself.

luxembourg tourist map pdf

The very first structure was launched in 1859, but it was reconstructed in 1907 and 1913, following the Moselle Neo-Baroque, a distinctive style of public buildings in Luxembourg. Some of its key features are its clock tower, the entrance hall’s mosaic, and the painted ceiling.

Opening Hours: 5:00 AM – 8:45 PM (Ticket Office), 5:00 AM – 12:00 AM (Waiting Room)

Luxembourg Hiking

Rewarding quality trails.

Luxembourg is the ideal travel destination for hikers: The country has one of the densest networks of hiking trails in Europe. Reconnect with nature and rediscover the simple pleasures of walking, while getting to know the country and its people.

‘Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe’ : routes such as the 112-kilometre Mullerthal Trail and the 106-kilometre, cross-border Escapardenne Eislek Trail , including the 52-kilometre Lee Trail, are well-signposted and packed with challenges. They lead through a wonderful variety of sometimes wild and unspoilt landscapes.

The Luxembourg Ardennes is a fascinating hiking area. In Éislek, as it is called in Luxembourgish, there are over 200 circular hiking trails through forests, past castles, over high plateaus and between rocks. The “ Éislek Pied ” groups 18 of these hiking trails around remarkable sites, which are particularly beautiful and varied. They are also one of the reasons the Éislek has now been voted Europe's first quality hiking region (“Leading Quality Region – Best of Europe”).

In the south of the country, hiking culture is also breaking new ground: covering more than 90 kilometres, the Minett Trail is fresh and exciting. It leads through a fascinating nature reserve created on an former opencast mining site. The Kabaisercher lodges welcome hikers who want to rest for a night after an active day. These original cabins include former industrial buildings, the entrance portal of the Fairy Tale Park, schools, factories and tourist vehicles that have been converted for overnight stays.

In the centre, the Guttland.Trails lure leisure hikers onto dreamy paths. In the east, a number of Dream Loops certified by the German Hiking Institute await hikers in the vineyards of the Moselle and along the river.

Many hiking tours offer perfect opportunities for combining outdoor experiences with a taste of Luxembourg’s unique culture. They take you through picturesque villages, to historical ruins and sightseeing highlights – and even across international borders. Choose a route split into stages that let you wind down at the end of each day with a delicious meal and a glass or two of excellent local wine.

There are also extra comfort hiking trails if you are not so good on your feet, or if you have small children with you. The comfort trails offer the possibility of walking or rolling along the natural beauty of Luxembourg with ease, and there are plenty of opportunities to rest.
