At Fairmount High School , Ohio in the suburbs of Dayton , a group of teenage students begin their school with an assembly featuring a band called "High on Life", though they are selfish at teachers and the principal. As the band continues to play onstage, Mark "Dags" D'Agastino and Reggie Barry decide to sabotage the assembly by exposing the band is lip syncing their music and playing the song recordings at inappropriate times. After a typing class (during which the teacher suffers a heart attack and dies), the seniors cut school and throw a party for Principal Moss. Moss eventually gets informed about the party from the student body president Steve Nisser. When he returns home, he gives the group detention, forcing them to write a letter to the President of the United States , explaining what is wrong with the education system.

The next day while arriving at school, Moss and the new typing class teacher notices that various newspaper station vans are there assuming that something has gone wrong within the building. Mrs. Winston tells him that Jason Lerman is inside the building after meeting the seniors. Moss makes the announcement over them being invited by the President, who amazingly enjoyed their letter, to Washington, D.C. to discuss it. However, it is actually just a plot devised by the corrupt U.S. Senator to humiliate the President. The bus arrives at a convenience store, where Dags and Reggie lock Moss in a flooded washroom, and they steal alcoholic beverages. They are pursued by Travis, a crazed Star Trek fan and crossing guard, who hitches a ride with an Asian family. While on their way, Moss falls into a " coma " after taking pills given to him by bus driver Red. At this point, the students go on a rampage celebrating over Moss passing out and throw another party, while Carla Morgan, the school slut , puts makeup on Moss.

The next day, the bus is pursued by Travis and the police. Red apparently dies from a drug overdose , and the bus nearly plows into a lake. Dags manages to stop it in time, but the car lands on the water and Travis escapes. Arriving at Washington, the group checks into a hotel and decides to take a class photo at a cemetery . Miosky uses fart lighting on J. Edgar Hoover 's flame to distract Travis. That night, the seniors secretly lace a box of chocolates with tequila and give it to Miss Milford. When Milford seduces Moss, the students begin to leave to go to a party at the hotel next door, but Steve Nisser threatens to blow the whistle. Dags orders Mioski to take care of him. At the hotel, while the other students enjoy the party, Lisa Perkins takes Dags to the rooftop where she seduces him. The next day, she suddenly discovers the plot to use the students and embarrass the President.

At the same time, Senator Lerman unexpectedly wakes up Moss and Milford, who—shocked at finding themselves in the same room—prepare themselves and the seniors for their meeting with the President. However, when they open the room, they do not find them there but only a tied-up Steve Nisser. Moss and Milford find the missing students, as they are informed of Lerman's plot as Lerman baffles to the discovery. The senator subsequently kidnaps Miosky and takes him to the White House with the others in hot pursuit. When they arrive at the White House, the senator insults the seniors, but Moss unexpectedly stands up for them. The senator's plot is ultimately exposed and the seniors return home. The film ends with a montage of the characters and where they ended up after the events.

Senior travel

senior trip wiki

  • 1 Understand
  • 3 Get around
  • 6 Stay healthy

As travel has become more comfortable, and many newly retired people have health and wealth, senior citizens are a growing but picky group of tourists. A popular theme for older tourists is nostalgia ; visiting places which were important to them some decades ago, back in their youth.

Ageing affects people differently. While decent physical and mental health make travel easier, severe conditions do not make travel impossible; see travellers with disabilities and travelling with a mental health condition .

As retired people have more free time than full-time workers, they are less dependent on time management , and can use some budget travel (and budget flying ) tricks, such as travelling off-season, and travelling (or visiting venues) on specific days and times with lower fares.

Retiring abroad is a topic in itself, with concerns for visas , taxes, and permanent housing.

Seniors might also prefer a prolonged stay in a low-income country, to enjoy a good living standard at a lower price than at home; see travel in developing countries .

As medical tourism can be a reason to travel, not least for elderly people, it can be combined with a journey for pleasure. Some treatment plans require a period of rehabilitation.

Visa rules might be more relaxed for retired people who have a proved income. While border checks against terrorism, smuggling and illegal immigration tend to single out younger travellers, seniors are not exempted from security protocols. Medication and metallic body implants can be difficult to get through security. Carry a doctor's note for those.

While old age itself does not prevent anyone from a long hike, seniors might prefer comfortable transportation methods, such as taxis , travel trailers and cruise ships . When hiking, there are often services available for transporting luggage, ready-made food on the trail and comfortable lodging. Some destinations are better on this than others, and price structure for the offerings vary.

Arriving in a new city usually feels more safe and enjoyable during daylight. Try to schedule your arrival before sunset.

Services and venues with senior discounts include public transportation , newspapers, museums , entertainment venues, eye care , online services, sport activities, vehicle rental and grocery stores . Age limit varies; while most discounts require the locally mandated retirement age (typically 60 to 67), many discounts are available from 55 or even earlier. Ticket discount classes might also include younger people in welfare programs, people with disabilities, or armed forces staff or veterans. Particularly on transport, the discounts may be restricted to those with a particular local discount card, which may either be sold or issued free to local residents (this means that detailed eligibility checks are only done once).

Some venues might be senior-only.

Travellers with relaxed schedules can take advantage of advance booking, or off-season discounts. Leisure venues tend to be less crowded (and/or cheaper) during weekdays, outside holidays and regular tourist seasons. Supermarkets and other shops might have an early-bird discount in morning hours.

Seniors might prefer the comfort, seclusion and familiarity of owning a second home , renting a holiday villa , or staying at a resort . Some hotels, including many with a spa tradition, especially cater to an older audience.

A travel trailer can, in some cases, allow accommodation near most attractions, minimizing the need for walking.

Stay healthy

Some medical conditions are associated with old age, or might be more dangerous at old age. See traveling with high blood pressure and flying and health .

Government healthcare might be available to foreigners within entities such as the European Union , but in the typical case an international traveller is personally responsible for their healthcare costs. Private healthcare not covered by health insurance (such as dentistry) is usually cheaper in low-income countries.

National Lampoon’s Senior Trip

There was a time when the "National Lampoon" name on a movie meant something, back in the days of "Animal House" and "Vacation." Now it means something else. In the case of "National Lampoon's Senior Trip," it means a witless item that is hurried through its theatrical window on its way to cable and homevid.

There was a time when the “National Lampoon” name on a movie meant something, back in the days of “Animal House” and “Vacation.” Now it means something else. In the case of “National Lampoon’s Senior Trip,” it means a witless item that is hurried through its theatrical window on its way to cable and homevid. New Line didn’t bother to press-screen the pic, presumably figuring it would be dead once word got out.

Story involves a bunch of seniors at an Ohio high school (actually shot in Canada), whose detention assignment is to write a letter to the president of the United States about why the education system has failed. The president is impressed and invites the kids to Washington.

There, a manipulative senator (Lawrence Dane) sees their arrival as an opportunity to use the moronic teens to embarrass his political rival.

Popular on Variety

This is an excuse for an unending string of jokes involving bodily functions including sex, flatulence, urination and regurgitation. If this is what teenagers are demanding to see, we’re in more trouble than the film acknowledges.

To his credit, Matt Frewer, as the principal, manages to flesh out his character to two dimensions; most of the rest of the cast are simply playing one-joke stick figures. Tommy Chong is the burnt-out bus driver known as “Red” because of his fondness for horse tranquilizers, while Valerie Mahaffey is the mousy teacher who really is a tigress. Kevin McDonald does add some life as a crazed crossing guard obsessed with “Star Trek” who, for unknown reasons, follows the students to Washington.

Otherwise, humor is subpar, as is the plotting, which imagines a senator being able to order every school in the country to use one food service and that the president would sit on a Senate committee panel. New Line’s best hope for a return here is that audiences will be attracted to its fall lineup, advertised by the string of trailers tacked on to the front of the film.

Mr. Diplo, I've given these students an assignment. Make sure they finish it by 1:00. If they're not finished, they can stay later.

Probably one of the strangest bait and switches of a film I'd seen in a while. In the first twenty minutes you think it's a regular rowdy teen school comedy that serves as a tourist ad for New York, but it turns out it deals with a lot of heavy subjects, like abuse, rape, and disability issues. You think I'm joking but I'm not making this up at all and put me into quite a few whiplashes from what I expected.

I think what I liked most about the film was all the various experimental shots. It makes it stand out from other films of its era especially during the dramatic parts. It can take a scene that doesn't really…

WarrenSikes

Review by WarrenSikes ★★★★

An amiable teen comedy/drama for television about a plucky gang of kids going to New York that ends as a kind of intimate psycho-drama. Like Meatballs or High School USA shifting gears into a teenage Last Tango in Paris.

Denise, the girl with the "reputation", gradually realizing the entire culture is trying to turn her into a prostitute (prostitution is a running theme). Then masochistically walking into hotel room with two beer-swilling goons, as if she's saying, "Fine, I'll be a whore".

THEN....the scenes between her and a guy questioning his sexuality that manage to completely avoid pat, easy, glib "It gets better" programmatic correctness.

It's interesting that the movie portrays the kind of party hard antics which powered this entire genre as either amusing but ultimately a frivolous waste of life or out-and-out malevolent...(without hammering you over the head with it)

What to Look for in the Best Senior Travel Insurance

Repatriation Coverage

Repatriation coverage is particularly important for seniors. It provides assistance and financial support for returning home in case of death while traveling abroad. Ensure that the policy you choose includes adequate repatriation coverage. Verify the coverage limits and any exclusions related to repatriation to ensure you’re adequately protected.

Superior Medical Insurance

Senior travelers may have more medical issues than younger travelers, so superior medical coverage is a must. I recommend at least $150,000 in travel medical insurance per person.

Evacuation Coverage

A medevac ride won’t be on your original travel itinerary, but I wouldn’t skimp on emergency medical evacuation coverage . This coverage pays the cost of getting to an adequate medical facility if you’re in a remote area or somewhere with poor medical care.

Coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions

I would make sure your policy offers a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver , which removes coverage exclusions for conditions you already have. You typically need to buy travel insurance soon after your first deposit to get the waiver, such as two to three weeks.

“Cancel for Any Reason” Upgrade

When life throws you a curveball, you’ll appreciate flexibility, which is why I recommend buying a policy that offers a “ cancel for any reason ” upgrade. This upgrade reimburses you a portion of your trip costs (often 75%) if you cancel for any reason not listed in the base policy.

Annual Plan for Frequent Travelers

I recommend an annual travel insurance plan to senior travelers who are planning multiple trips in a year. All your trips will be covered under one policy and it’s more affordable than buying multiple policies during one year.

The average cost of senior travel insurance is $420 per trip , based on our analysis of rates for the best travel insurance policies for seniors. Your exact cost for travel insurance will generally depend on the travelers’ ages, length of trip and trip cost.

In our analysis, travel insurance for seniors often costs around 7% to 9% of the trip cost being insured. Remember that you’re insuring only the portions of the trip that are prepaid and non-refundable. You can’t make a claim on expenses that you can get refunded, like refundable airline tickets.

ASK THE EXPERT

We Answer Your Questions

How are “pre-existing conditions” defined for travel insurance.

Charles K., Columbus, Ohio

Generally, a pre-existing condition is an illness, injury or medical condition that caused you to seek treatment, experience symptoms or take medication before buying a travel insurance policy within a specified amount of time, such as 90 days.

How does buying a multi-trip plan save me money?

Diana N., Metairie, LA

If you plan on taking more than one trip, buying a multi-trip plan—also called an annual plan—can be cheaper than buying individual single-trip plans for multiple trips. Also, age doesn’t affect the price of annual travel insurance, so you may pay less than if you buy individual plans.

Are there age limits on travel insurance?

James B., San Diego

There can be age limits and they can vary by the type of policy you buy and by the travel insurance company. Many standard travel insurance plans don’t have a maximum age, but others may not cover people over certain ages, such as 75 or 80. Travel medical plans usually cover senior travelers, but at lower limits than younger travelers. I recommend that you work with a travel insurance agent to find the best options for your age.

What’s the most important insurance coverage for senior travelers?

Seniors should put priority on the medical coverage within a travel insurance policy—specifically travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage. This is especially important if you’re traveling outside the U.S., where Medicare will work only in very limited situations.

Look for high maximum limits for these two coverage types. For example, you can find plans that offer $500,000 for medical expenses and $1 million for emergency medical evacuation.

Repatriation can be expensive, so seniors should also consider the repatriation benefits included in any policy they purchase. These benefits provide financial assistance for bringing the insured individual back to their home country if they pass away while traveling.

How can seniors save money on travel insurance?

Comparison shopping to find cheap travel insurance can save you money without sacrificing coverage. If you want to lower costs even more, though, focus on getting trip cancellation and good medical coverage, and de-prioritize coverage for baggage, missed connections and other non-medical coverage.

Remember to insure only the prepaid and non-refundable parts of your trip. For example, if your plane tickets are fully refundable, don’t pay to insure those. Travel insurance won’t reimburse you for deposits that were refundable.

Does Medicare cover me when I’m traveling outside of the U.S.?

Medicare generally does not cover your health care when you’re traveling outside of the U.S. That means if you get sick or injured while vacationing in another country, you usually won’t be covered.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer some coverage for emergency care received outside the U.S., but this can vary by plan and is often limited. You should check your specific Medicare Advantage plan for details on international coverage while traveling abroad.

We recommend seniors buy travel insurance with generous amounts of travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage . For example, look for plans that offer $500,000 for medical expenses and $1 million in emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Does travel insurance for seniors cover pre-existing conditions?

Travel insurance for seniors typically excludes coverage for pre-existing conditions, but you can get pre-existing conditions covered with a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver. You can generally only get this waiver within 14 to 21 days of making your initial trip deposit and only if you insure the full nonrefundable costs for your trip.

Some problems are not covered by travel insurance for pre-existing conditions , such as Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, dementia, depression, or any illness or injury related to alcohol or drug abuse.

Does senior travel insurance cover my grandchildren?

A standard travel insurance policy covers up to 10 travelers and typically any traveling companion can be included on a travel insurance policy, including your grandchildren. But some travel insurance may require everyone on the policy to live in the same household.

Some policies cover children for free as long as they’re under a certain age and accompanied by an adult. For example, the Allianz One Trip Premier plans cover children age 17 and under if they’re traveling with a parent or grandparent.
