The Mediterranean has a timeless appeal, with its winning combination of historical treasures, charming port towns, balmy summer weather and fantastic food and drink. Here are 12 of the best small ship cruises to the Mediterranean.

It's an incredibly diverse region, and here in the UK we're lucky enough to have the Med right on our doorstep, so it's no surprise that it remains the most popular destination for British cruisers year after year. Every major cruise line sends its ships to the Mediterranean during our summer months, though the experience on offer can vary dramatically.

There are certain ports that appear on every cruise line's Mediterranean itineraries, and rightly so: the likes of Venice, Barcelona and Dubrovnik are popular for a reason. But a small ship cruise opens up a whole different side to the Mediterranean, allowing you to visit the smaller ports and secluded bays that a bigger ship just can't reach.

At Mundy Cruising we specialise in ships that carry guests in the hundreds, rather than the thousands, which makes for a very different atmosphere on board: more intimate, more spacious, with a level of personalised service that has more in common with a boutique hotel than a mainstream cruise ship carrying 5,000 passengers. Even within the small ship category you have a fantastic breadth of choice in the Mediterranean, from resort-style ships offering dining choices and entertainment venues aplenty, to tiny 100-guest vessels that are more like travelling on your own private yacht.

Peak season in the Med naturally coincides with the hottest summer months, though we prefer to visit in May or September, when the crowds are thinner and temperatures are more comfortable. Certain itineraries, such as those visiting the Greek Islands, tend to get booked up early, so it pays to plan ahead. Having said that, there are often bargains to be had in the Med if you're not too fussed about where you go, particularly earlier or later in the season.

To assist you in choosing the right ship, here is our guide to the best small ship cruise lines visiting the Mediterranean.

1. Windstar Cruises

Windstar's fleet of six small ships - three with sails, three without - are a lovely size, ranging from the 148-guest Wind Star to the 342-guest Wind Surf . The atmosphere on board is laid-back and friendly, with no dressing up for dinner, and entertainment is low key.

Windstar have a great selection of Mediterranean itineraries focusing on specific areas, including the Greek islands, the Amalfi Coast and Croatia. Fares offer great value, though they are not fully inclusive - drinks and gratuities are extra.

2. Silversea

Silversea are a natural choice for a Mediterranean small ship cruise, with their Italian roots and their 'classic' fleet ranging in size from the 274-guest Silver Wind to the new 728-guest Silver Nova and Silver Ray. Silversea pioneered the luxury all-inclusive concept, with all your meals, alcoholic drinks and even butler service included in the fare, and Silversea's extensive Mediterranean programme includes lots of tiny ports that other lines rarely visit.

3. Seabourn

Seabourn are a great option if you're looking for a longer voyage, offering a great choice of extended itineraries that showcase the amazing diversity of the Mediterranean. Their ships are spacious and contemporary, and you can choose between the 458-guest 'triplets' - Odyssey, Quest and Sojourn - or the newer, and slightly larger, Encore and Ovation , both carrying a maximum of 604 guests. Fares are all-inclusive, and there are often great savings to be had if you're flexible on your dates and itinerary.

4. Crystal Cruises

Crystal's newly-enhanced sister ships Symphony and Serenity are at the larger end of what we would consider small, carrying 606 guests and 740 guests respectively since their refurbishment, but this means that you'll enjoy a greater choice of dining and entertainment venues on board, including the fantastic Nobu , as well as a packed programme of daily activities.

Their Mediterranean itineraries are perhaps less adventurous than some, but Crystal's onboard hospitality is unparalleled, and these ships are perfect if you're looking for more of a resort style on board.

5. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent are one of the most inclusive of all the all-inclusive lines; as well as your meals, drinks, gratuities and taxes, even laundry, your fare also includes your flights, overseas transfers and a selection of shore excursions in every port.

These included excursions are a particular boon if you're visiting archaeological sites, museums or galleries where you need a guide to really understand what you're seeing, and they're great if you're visiting a port where the points of interest are some distance away, such as Livorno (for Florence and Pisa). Regent also offer excursions themed around food and drink, wellness and off-the-beaten track 'Go Local' experiences. Ships range in size from 490 to 750 guests, and the accommodation is particularly spacious.

6. SeaDream Yacht Club

The SeaDream experience is everything we love about small ship cruising, with a laid-back, al fresco style on board and some fantastic Mediterranean itineraries visiting charming little ports, exclusive yacht harbours, sleepy islands and idyllic beaches.

Their twin yachts each accommodate just 112 lucky guests, with all meals, drinks and gratuities included in the fare. There is also a watersports marina at the back of the ship, with toys including kayaks, paddle boards, jetskis and Laser sailboats.

French cruise line Ponant have recently undergone significant expansion, with the recent addition of six 184-guest 'Explorer class' yachts. This is in addition to their existing fleet of four 264-guest ships and the petite 64-guest sailing ship Le Ponant, so you have a huge choice of itineraries. On board you can expect chic, contemporary design and the best of French hospitality, plus a marina at the back of the ship for watersports and zodiac excursions.

As you might expect, Ponant's Mediterranean programme includes some appealing voyages to Corsica and the south of France, along with cruises focusing on Croatia, the Greek islands and Italy.

8. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Hapag-Lloyd cater principally to the German-speaking market, but their stunning 500-guest MS Europa 2 operates bilingual cruises in German and English, and has been consistently rated the best cruise ship in the world by the Berlitz Guide. The ship's Nordic-inspired interiors are flooded with natural light, there are seven different restaurants to choose from and there is a real emphasis on wellness, with a huge spa.

Fares can be high, and do not include alcoholic drinks or gratuities, but a shipboard credit helps to offset your bill. Options in the Mediterranean include cruises that start or end in Mallorca, an unusual routing that allows you to tack some beach time onto your cruise, and Hapag also have some lovely voyages down to the Canary Islands.

9. Oceania Cruises

Oceania's port-intensive Mediterranean itineraries are perfect for those who really like to make the most of their time ashore and spend plenty of time exploring, with lots of overnight calls and late evening departures. The style on board is relaxed and unfussy, and Oceania are particularly noted for the quality of their food.

The smaller 'R-class' ships, carrying 684 guests, are a lovely size, while the larger 'O-class' and newest 'Allura class' ships can accommodate 1,250 and 1200 guests respectively, ideal those looking for more facilities on board. Standard fares do not include alcoholic drinks or gratuities, but these are often included in their regular promotions.

Scenic's discovery yachts, Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II, cater to just 228 guests and usually operate expedition voyages in some of the most remote locations on the planet, but these super sleek vessels are just as at home in the warm waters of the Mediterranean, when they visit briefly early or late in the season, as they are in the freezing polar oceans.

Offering an outstanding level of luxury with all-balcony accommodation and a vast choice of dining venues for such a small ship their all-inclusive pricing also includes shore excursions. Although if you want to try out one of the ships' twin helicopters a supplement will apply!

11. Emerald Cruises

Having followed a similar path as sister brand Scenic, Emerald have expanded from their popular river cruise and touring programme and introduced a small ship cruise experience. Their 100-guest yachts, Emerald Azzurra and Sakara , look fantastic and offer a laidback and informal atmosphere on board.

A single main restaurant (plus pool café) and smaller step out style balconies for the majority of balcony grade stateroom differentiate it from the Scenic ships as this is targeted at the premium market. Fares are not fully inclusive, with drinks outside of mealtimes being extra, but your flights, transfers, meals, wine and beer with meals, WiFi, gratuities and even excursions in key ports are included. An excess of Mediterranean itineraries offer focused country and region-specific sailing as well as voyages that enjoy a collection of the area's best highlights.

12. Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

For a voyage akin to being on board your own private yacht, Ritz Carlton offers stylish luxury on board their first yacht Evrima , which launched in 2022 and marked the hotel giant's first foray into cruising. Their second yacht, Ilma , launches this year and will be slightly larger than Evrima but with the same intimate resort style, perfect for sailing the laid-back rivieras of the Mediterranean in style.

With itineraries focused on Europe and the Caribbean, their voyages showcase the best of these regions, from iconic routes to hidden harbours. In the Mediterranean , enjoy shorter 5-night itineraries for a perfect taste of sunshine, or longer 11- or 12-night sailings offering port intensive routes in the Greek Isles, French and Spanish Rivieras, and Adriatic coastline.

Discover the Best Small Ship Cruises in the Mediterranean

Embarking on a small luxury cruise ship in the Mediterranean is a fantastic way to explore the region’s hidden gems. Imagine gliding through crystal-clear waters, hopping between Greek islands, stopping at charming coastal villages, and indulging in exquisite local cuisines. Small luxury cruise ships take you to less-visited, smaller ports, providing an intimate and immersive travel experience.

I’ve found that cruising is the best way to experience the Mediterranean. Small luxury cruise ships let you explore hidden gems, offering new, immersive experiences at each stop. Imagine walking through the ancient ruins of Rome, exploring the vibrant streets of Athens, relaxing on the stunning beaches of the French Riviera, or admiring the picturesque Amalfi Coast. These journeys reveal the region’s rich cultural tapestry and provide a unique charm and luxury.

Planning a Mediterranean cruise on a small ship? The best times to travel are from May to June and September to October. These months offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds, ensuring a more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

If you’re looking for the best small-ship cruise line to sail around the Mediterranean, this guide is here to help. Based on my travels and research, I’ve gathered recommendations and tips for the best small-ship cruises, highlighting the unique experiences they offer. My insights aim to help you choose a memorable cruise and enjoy the Mediterranean at its best.

What is a Small Luxury Cruise Ship?

Small luxury cruise ships typically accommodate between 50 and 400 guests. These vessels offer an intimate and exclusive travel experience and can dock at less-frequented ports and secluded harbors. The luxury ships could resemble private yachts, tall sailing ships, or small cruise ships. Despite their small size, they usually offer spacious accommodations and exceptional amenities.

The luxurious experience on small cruise ships is unmatched compared with larger vessels. Forget about standing in line for mediocre buffet food or scrambling for sun loungers around a packed pool. The ships are designed for comfort and exclusivity, focused on more personalized and attentive service.

Although cruise companies like Oceania and Regent Seven Seas cruises are sometimes classed as Mediterranean small-ship cruise lines, their ships are too large for my list. Like many travelers, I’ve found that traveling on small ships with 400 passengers or fewer offers the ultimate luxury and intimate experience.

Small Mediterranean Cruise Lines vs. Larger Cruise Ships

Choosing a small cruise line over a large one has numerous benefits when sailing the Mediterranean. Smaller ships tend to avoid the popular ports large cruise lines use, fostering a more genuine cultural immersion and avoiding throngs of tourists. The relaxed onboard atmosphere, personalized service, and luxurious amenities make the voyage unique and memorable.

Why Choose a Small Cruise Ship for a Luxury Mediterranean Cruise

Choosing a small cruise ship for a luxury Mediterranean cruise offers unique advantages.

Typically, smaller ships offer a more personalized environment. Some vessels stay in port longer or overnight, giving you more opportunities to explore cities and local attractions. Also, smaller ships can dock in secluded bays, navigate narrow waterways, or visit less-frequented ports. These factors enhance the luxury cruise experience in the Mediterranean.

Other advantages of choosing a Mediterranean small ship cruise include the following:

  • Access to a variety of ports traditional cruise ships cannot visit
  • Never feeling crowded or rushed when sailing to destinations around the Mediterranean
  • High-end amenities, all-inclusive services, and some shore excursions are part of the cruise cost, making it easier to budget
  • Enjoy adventurous Mediterranean itineraries to visit off-the-beaten-track places
  • Greater access to exclusive cultural excursions, fine dining, and luxury onboard facilities

Why Fall is the Best Time to Visit the Mediterranean

While May to June and September to October are generally great times to visit the Mediterranean, the fall months of September and October stand out as particularly ideal. The weather is perfect, with sunny days and cooler temperatures that make sightseeing in cities like Rome enjoyable. You’ll encounter fewer crowds, making it easier to explore destinations like the French Riviera at a leisurely pace.

The seas are calmer, enhancing your cruising experience. Fall also means a bounty of fresh, local food and wine, with harvest festivals in cities like Barcelona. Additionally, Mediterranean wildlife, including migratory birds and marine mammals, is most active in autumn.

Small Ship Cruises in the Mediterranean: FAQs

When should i book a mediterranean cruise.

It’s best to book a luxury small-ship Mediterranean cruise six to 12 months in advance. Small-ship cruises in the Mediterranean are popular and tend to sell out quickly. Early booking often comes with added perks like discounts, onboard credits, or free upgrades. However, you can sometimes find last-minute deals, particularly during shoulder seasons.

How to choose a Mediterranean small-ship cruise?

Small Mediterranean cruise lines offer an array of activities, including tours of historic cities, island hopping, relaxing on secluded beaches, and exploring lush landscapes. Other considerations are cruise duration and personal preferences for ship size and amenities. Research different small-ship cruise lines and their itineraries, focusing on the ports of call and onboard experiences.

What is the best way to travel around the Mediterranean?

A voyage on a small cruise ship is the best way to travel around the Mediterranean. This gives you access to lesser-known ports, secluded bays, and river cruises. Small cruises sometimes have later departing times, offering more opportunities to enjoy nightlife in ports of call.

What are the top gastronomic experiences on small Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cuisine is famous for its seafood, olive oil, and fresh vegetables. Gourmet chefs onboard source food from local markets to create culinary delights like Spanish paella, Greek moussaka, and Italian pasta. You can also enjoy exclusive wine tastings featuring local vineyards. Some cruises offer cooking classes and market tours to enhance the culinary experience.

Which side of the ship is best for Mediterranean cruises?

The best side of the ship for a Mediterranean cruise depends on the specific itinerary. Generally, having a cabin on the starboard (right) side may offer better coastline views when sailing east or north. In contrast, the port (left) side might provide better views when sailing west.

Which small-ship cruise line is best for luxury?

Several cruise lines are renowned for luxury Mediterranean cruises. Silversea has a fleet of mega yachts with luxurious, spacious staterooms and suites. Ponant has a stunning sailing ship with room for only 32 passengers. Scenic Luxury Cruises has the most opulent yachts with onboard helicopters and submarines.

What months is the Mediterranean Sea rough?

The Mediterranean Sea can be rougher during late fall and winter when strong winds and storms are expected. The best time for smoother sailing on a small cruise ship is late spring or early fall. The sea is relatively calm during these times, and temperatures are not too hot.

How much does an 8-day Mediterranean luxury cruise cost?

The cost of a Mediterranean cruise can vary widely based on the cruise line, ship, duration, and time of year. Prices for luxury cruises typically range from $2,000 to over $10,000 per person. Small-ship cruises with inclusive amenities and exclusive shore excursions tend to be on the higher end of the spectrum. However, budgeting money is easier because luxury cruises are usually all-inclusive, including shore excursions.

What is the cheapest month to go on a luxury Mediterranean cruise?

The cheapest months to go on a luxury Mediterranean cruise are typically during the shoulder seasons of April to early June and September to October. The weather is still pleasant during these times, but the demand is lower, often resulting in better deals and fewer crowds.

Welcome to the Mediterranean and Greece

A swoon-worthy Aegean Odyssey aboard the Wind Star yacht blends ancient with modern in a kaleidoscope of discoveries... go back in time in Greece, seeing antiquities in Athens and Mykonos, the playground of the rich and famous... Delos, holiest of all Greek sanctuaries, and the ancient caldera of Santorini, the precious gem of the Aegean... and much more as you deeply explore this cultural treasure chest.

Sicily... rich with the gifts of civilizations that have come before....

Blessed with a long, rich heritage that dates back to some of Europe's earliest civilizations, Sicily retains many vestiges of the cultures that have come and gone here throughout the centuries – Greek theatres, Roman villas, Byzantine art, Norman cathedrals, Moorish markets, Baroque churches. Among the treasures you'll encounter are Siracusa's Greek Theatre, Ear of Dionysius, and 3rd-century Roman amphitheatre; Ortigia's Theatre of Apollo and Baroque Duomo; the Baroque gems of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Noto; ancient Ragusa Ibla; the capital, Palermo, and its Palazzo dei Normanni; and traces of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines in Taormina.

Bonifacio, Corsica

Discovering the medieval harbor of bonifacio on the island of corsica.

Tucked between soaring chalk-white limestone cliffs, the island of Corsica's tiny, fjord-like harbor of Bonifacio is only accessible to small ships and private yachts like the one you'll be sailing on. And your entrance into this spectacular harbor – and the historic 12th-century city it welcomes you to – is nothing short of magical… so be sure to have your camera ready! Once ashore, you can hop aboard Le Petit Train for a ride to the area of the town's walled citadel, built during the middle ages; wander a maze of medieval lanes; stroll along the bluff overlooking the harbor; or explore the former barracks of the French Foreign Legion.

Tauck Exclusive – Sistine Chapel & Vatican Museums after-hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the Popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular Biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Evening at Library of Celsus, Ephesus

Special dinner with chamber music at ephesus' library of celsus.

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture... and the amazing nighttime setting for a special evening featuring an al fresco dinner with a chamber music orchestral performance.

Weather and Best Time to Cruise

When considering a voyage on small cruise ships Mediterranean, weather plays a pivotal role. The Mediterranean promises a gentle climate, with variations depending on location and season.

The bustling peak cruising season unfolds between June and August, boasting warm, sun-drenched weather. Yet, the crowd of tourists may be overwhelming. Ports of call are often abuzz with visitors.

For those preferring tranquility, consider the shoulder season, spanning from April-May or September-October. Here, the weather remains agreeable, and the crowds dwindle.

July and August stand out for their sultry, dry weather, with temperatures hovering around 30°C (86°F). However, remember this period also marks the height of tourist influx, potentially leading to crowded small ports.

In contrast, spring and fall offer cooler but still mild and pleasant climates. Fewer crowds and lower prices make these seasons enticing. Average temperatures round off at about 20°C (68°F), ideal for leisurely explorations on foot or bike.

Winter voyages on small cruise ships Mediterranean aren’t famous, with unpredictable weather and several closed attractions. Yet, some cruises sail during winter, promising lower prices and sparse crowds.

Do remember to check the destination’s weather forecast while planning your cruise. Essentials include comfortable footwear, a light jacket, and sunscreen. Weather can swiftly change, and being prepared for sudden shifts is wise.

Ultimately, cruising the Mediterranean on small cruise ships during the shoulder season is optimal, with agreeable weather and reduced crowds. Whether seeking a serene retreat or a thrilling journey, a small cruise ship is an excellent way to discover the Mediterranean’s charm.

Small Ship Mediterranean Cruises: Where to Sail

Where to go in this widespread, popular destination? The following is an overview of Mediterranean small ship cruise regions, with notes on the best places for small ship. Our guidance on where to sail in the Mediterranean is separated into four broad categories based on the most common small ship Mediterranean cruise routes:

A map with beige and blue colors showing the popular small Mediterranean cruise region and waters around Greece, Italy and Croatia.

Cruises to Croatia, Dalmatian Coast, Albania, Montenegro

The southernmost shoreline of Croatia, running from the island of Rab south to the Bay of Kotor, is a popular stretch of coastline for Adriatic Sea cruises. Almost all Croatia small ship cruises visit this Dalmatia region, one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean.

Historic hillside towns made of brick and terracotta drop down to the sea in dramatic fashion. Fortified castles standing guard at the water’s edge (some of which can be seen in the TV series “Game of Thrones.”) This trendy region offers ancient Roman marble palaces, quiet beaches on small off-shore islands, cultural dances by engaging locals, world-renowned wine tasting and delectable dishes. Other Adriatic Sea cruise routes aboard small ships include the ports of Venice, Naples or even Athens.

Small Ship Greek Island Cruises

Greece is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising destinations. With over 200 islands they are ideal for small ship cruising. Many small ship Greek Island cruises hit the popular ports of Mykonos and Santorini as well as the Corinth Canal. But we recommend routes that explore lesser known gems too. We recommend Peloponnese Peninsula and Cyclades cruises, which operate round-trip from Athens, Greece. Select routes take you far north as Corfu and the other Ionian Islands. Some itineraries even connect south to Egypt!

Combining Greece & Turkey, Croatia or Egypt

If you’re looking to go farther afield, some Greece small ship cruises continue on to visit other nearby countries. The Aegean Sea takes center stage for small ship cruises to Turkey and Greece. The Aegean Islands are a collection of stunning landscapes, historical monuments and mythical legends. They are mostly under Greek sovereignty, though some eastern islands and smaller islets are under Turkish rule.

Turkey’s Bodrum with its Mausoleum at Halicarnassus one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the vibrant Kusadasi market are highlights for cruises that include Turkey.

Small ship Mediterranean cruises that sail up the western coast of Greece and into the Adriatic Sea often include stops in Albania and Montenegro before finishing in Croatia. On a Dubrovnik to Athens cruise, for example, you can see the highlights of both of these iconic countries while not setting foot in an airport. These extended Croatia small ship cruise options are all excellent choices if you have time for a longer sailing.

Small Ship Cruises in Italy, Malta & Beyond

Italy has long been one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean, but the small ship experience provides unique insights and exclusive access to sites not often visited. Unspoiled clifftop towns, sites of antiquity and incredible food and wine are highlights of Italy cruises.

Mediterranean small ship cruises that include stops in Italy are fast-becoming favorites for travelers who want to skip crowded overland travel. Many of AdventureSmith’s newest offerings in the region are cruises around Italy and Sicily.

Look for popular routes from Venice or Naples that include Capri, Dubrovnik, Croatia, or small islets in the Adriatic Sea. Opt for cruises around Sicily and Malta, or continue west with Mediterranean small ship cruise itineraries that visit other must-see ports.

“Discover harbors only accessible by small ship.”

Temperature & Rainfall

Subtropic Summer Cruising

The Mediterranean consists of a subtropic climate providing relatively mild winters and very warm summers, making it a perfect destination for small ship cruises . The temperature is moderated by nearby large bodies of water making for comfortable conditions throughout most of the year. The best time of year for small ship Mediterranean cruises is April through November.

What Our Travelers Say About Their Mediterranean Cruise

Photo by Adventure Specialist Andrew Browning

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.

Accommodations, ship and staff were all excellent. Met several great people/couples, all were enjoyable. The Smithsonian lectures and tour guides were very good.

We enjoyed everything from the accommodations, tours, food and like-minded guests. We definitely have great memories and would recommend this trip to other friends and family.

All was great - from pre planning to the actual travel.

The staff was wonderful! The children love them.

Both the Sea Cloud and the land explorations were superb. We found Corsica to be particularly fascinating.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Accommodations Review

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Meals Review

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

Crew & Guides Review

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

First, the "dinners" would not stop me from recommending the cruise. For a French cruise line I had very high expectations, maybe too high. Other passengers had similar comments. Overall good, 5 star vessel, 3 star dinners. Other meals very good.

Overall good. Some details on shore excursion's were lacking. More free time at each would be have been nice.

Itinerary Review

All [places were] enjoyable in there different ways. The hiking excursion although very interesting was poorly planned, more difficult (for the old passengers) and much longer than we were told.

Very thorough with all the details.

  • The Best of Croatia Cruises
  • Le Jacques Cartier

The vessel was well appointed and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was great as well and worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and attended to.

I especially liked the local cuisine that they provided, with the wonderful Greek Salads and other selections. The only improvement on breakfast would be to provide brewed coffee as what was provided was instant coffee in tea-like bags That would probably be the only improvement.

Dittmar, the manager on board/tour director who did everything to provide us with information, changing tours to meet the changing weather conditions and providing information in a very professional, upbeat and pleasant way. He really kept everything going smoothly on board. He was very organized, provided excellent information on each island and really was great in every way. We also met one of the owners of the Variety ships, Christian, who introduced himself upon our arrival to the boat. That was a surprise!

I really liked ALL the locations we visited but enjoyed most Monemvassia and Santorini. We had a fantastic trip. Although we experienced some cooler/windier weather than is normal for this time of year, everything worked out really well. The ship staff was awesome and was professional, personable and thorough. Due to rough waters they had to turn the itinerary around and make all new tour reservations and many other last minute arrangements, adding a few different locations than expected. They did all this very well.

Transportation Review

All transportation arrangements went very smoothly and we were either provided the transportation or given the information (hotel in Athens) we needed to make our own. The hotel suggested was beautiful and first rate, with amazing views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant.

Fellow Passengers Review

We can't say enough good things about all the passengers on board (that we met). There was a group of 30 Road Scholar passengers that we did not interact with too much, but all the other passengers were so pleasant, likeable and very well traveled. We got to know many very well and joined them for meals and tours and restaurants off the boat as well.

Andrew Browning, whom we have used several times to book trips, did his usual great job answering questions and provided timely information and everything we needed ahead of the trip. We have been on a number of trips with family over the years with AdventureSmith and we look forward to many more. Each trip is so memorable and provides great bonding time. I always recommend people to go to your website when looking for a trip.

Traveler Advice

Go to Greece, as we did, during the shoulder months like May and September when the hoards of people are not there. We never had to fight the crowds as you do in the summer months. With climate change, be prepared for unexpected weather and be flexible with tours being changed due to inclimate weather. If  travelers are looking for culture, history and beautiful scenery, this is a great place to go!

Athens hotel was a great location, nice rooms and pool. Older but great for our needs. Ship room was good sized and nice, common decks and dining areas were good. Dated but ideal for our needs.

Breakfast on the ship offered a lot of choices but was pretty much the same each morning.

Athens Delphi tour was great - bus ride took about 2+ hours each way. Syros, Flegandros and Paros were my favorite islands with each having good sites to visit and not too big with good food/shops. Mykonos and Santorini islands where good but very busy and my least favorite.

Airport transportation was on time, nice vehicles and driver.

Perfect group with similar age adult/children. Everyone was active.

The tour guides at Delphi and Parthenon were very good and knowledgeable. Athens guide were great.

Great planning.

  • Jewels of the Cyclades

The Galileo was very clean and functional. The staff was wonderful! The children love them. The chef was able to accomodate dietary restrictions easily. The food was wonderful! We liked the swim stops. We enjoyed the tours of the islands. Least enjoyed: It rained and the long trip back to Athens on the rough sea was LONG. We were grateful that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the trip.

Sea Cloud continues to be a classic! Well maintained and very well run.

Even better than ever! John is thoughtful, attentive to the group's needs as well as to the individuals in the group.

COVID Logistics

A great travel experience that took great care to minimize the Covid risk and maximize the journey for all of us.

The Best Mediterranean Small Ship Cruises

Europe: the mediterranean.

From the Strait of Gibraltar in the west to the Dardanelles leading to the Black Sea in the east, a Mediterranean cruise provides a rich kaleidoscope of interests and experiences . If you get hooked by its diversions and diversity, then cruising in these waters can soon become a habit, and happily, there are a myriad of varied itineraries from which to choose lasting from the week up to a month. If your travel plans are limited to the high summer season, then select an itinerary that avoids at least some of the more crowded ports, as while the streets of large cities such as Barcelona, Rome, Athens and Istanbul can handle the hoards, interior visits to cultural sites — museums, palaces, mosques and churches — can result in a disappointing and even an unpleasant experience. Cruise itineraries fall into four different, and sometimes overlapping, areas: 1) Western Mediterranean, 2) Eastern Mediterranean, 3) Combined East and West and, 4) The Black Sea.

Mediterranean Small Ship Cruises: Expert Tips & Tricks

Imagine cruising the Mediterranean hitting on the most unique European cruise ports not on a colossal ship with thousands of passengers, but on an intimate vessel where every corner whispers a story, every crew member knows your name, and every port holds a secret just waiting for you to uncover.

Welcome to the mesmerizing world of Mediterranean small ship cruises!

Mediterranean Small Ship Cruises

Why the Mediterranean is Perfect for Small Ship Cruising

Picture this: The sun sets in a blaze of oranges and purples, casting long, dancing shadows across a historic coastal town.

The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering tomato sauce wafts from a nearby kitchen, and the soft strumming of a guitar serenades you as you sip on local wine.

You’re not on the crowded deck of a massive cruise liner docked miles away. No, you’re moored right in the heart of this picturesque town, living the Mediterranean dream.

Let’s dive deeper into why the Mediterranean and small ship cruising are a match made in heaven.

Lesser-Known Ports of Pure Magic

The Mediterranean isn’t just about Barcelona, Athens, or Rome. It’s also about those hidden gems like the Sicilian town of Cefalù, or the Greek island of Hydra where cars are notably absent, replaced by charming donkeys. Small ships access these lesser-traveled destinations, letting you explore without elbowing through tourist-packed streets.

Cultural Immersion at Its Best

Instead of rushing through a whirlwind tour of a popular city in just a few hours, small ships often have extended or overnight stays.

This lets you truly soak in the local culture, perhaps catching a late-night flamenco show in Spain or an early morning market in Turkey.

Eco-Friendly Exploration

The Mediterranean, with its delicate marine ecosystems, truly appreciates the softer touch of small ships.

Less pollution, fewer anchor drops, and responsible waste management make for a more sustainable voyage. So you can cruise with a clear conscience!

The Gastronomical Adventure

With the ability to dock closer to the heart of destinations, fresh local ingredients often make their way onboard. This means you’re not just tasting generic cruise food but dishes inspired by the very ports you visit. One day it might be a Provençal ratatouille, and the next, a tantalizing Turkish meze.

The Mediterranean is a mosaic of cultures, landscapes, and flavors. And while any form of cruising lets you get a taste of its diversity, small ship cruising lets you savor each bite. It’s about lingering a little longer, feeling a little deeper, and letting the Mediterranean truly sweep you off your feet.

Lindos Acropolis

Top Destinations to Discover

Alright, wanderlusters, let’s get to the real juicy bits. The Mediterranean is a treasure trove of destinations, each holding its own special allure.

But when you’re aboard a small ship, some of these spots truly stand out, giving you experiences that big liners can only dream of. Buckle up as we embark on a virtual tour of the crème de la crème of Mediterranean small ship cruising destinations!

Greece: Hidden Island Gems Beyond Santorini and Mykonos

Sure, the iconic blue-domed churches of Santorini and the party vibes of Mykonos are fantastic, but have you heard of Folegandros? With its cliff-perched Chora and dreamy beaches, it’s a slice of Greek paradise without the crowds.

And then there’s Naxos, offering a melange of ancient ruins, dune-backed beaches, and mouthwatering cheeses. But don’t forget, we also have Paros … are you getting the point yet? Taking a small ship cruise through the Mediterranean allows you to explore some of the lesser known cruise ports with ease!

Croatia: The Tranquil Beauty of the Dalmatian Coast

Move over Dubrovnik ! While the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is stunning, smaller towns like Rovinj with its Venetian-style architecture and Korčula, the alleged birthplace of Marco Polo, offer a more relaxed pace. Glide through the crystal-clear waters, and don’t miss out on sampling fresh seafood in a cozy konoba (local eatery).

Italy: Uncharted Shores Beyond Venice

Venice might steal the limelight, but there’s a world to explore beyond. Portofino, with its pastel-colored houses, and the Aeolian Islands , home to the explosive Stromboli volcano, are just the tip of the iceberg. Dive into Italy’s diverse coastal regions, where every port tells a different tale.

Turkey: From Ancient Wonders to Secluded Havens

The ruins of Ephesus are a time-traveler’s delight, but small ships also drop anchor at spots like Göcek, renowned for its paradisiacal bays. Revel in the rich tapestry of Turkish history, culture, and natural beauty, all while sipping on some authentic apple tea.

Spain: More Than Just Sun and Sangria

The Balearic Islands beckon with their pristine beaches, especially the lesser-known Formentera. Meanwhile, Almería enchants with its blend of Moorish fortresses and tapas culture. And let’s not forget Cadaqués, which once inspired Salvador Dalí.

The Mediterranean isn’t just a destination; it’s a kaleidoscope of experiences. Each port, each bay, each hidden corner brings with it a new story, a fresh flavor, a novel perspective. And aboard a small ship, you’re not just skimming through pages; you’re diving deep into each chapter.

Practical Tips and Tricks for Your Mediterranean Small Ship Adventure

Let’s be real. Embarking on any travel adventure, especially on water, requires some know-how to ensure you make the most out of your trip.

And while cruising the Mediterranean aboard an intimate vessel is downright dreamy, a little preparation can take your experience from delightful to divine. Ready to set sail smoothly? Here are some insider tidbits to keep in mind:

Packing the Perfect Suitcase

  • Dress Code: While most small ship cruises are more laid-back, it’s still nice to pack a semi-formal outfit for special dinners or events.
  • Versatility: Think layers! The Mediterranean can get breezy in the evenings. Also, pack for your cruise with a mix of swimwear, comfy walking shoes, and light jackets.
  • Space Savers: Remember, cabins on smaller ships might be cozy, so packing cubes can be a lifesaver.

Money Matters

  • Local Currency: While many places accept credit cards, having some local currency on hand for smaller ports or markets is wise.
  • Tipping: It’s good etiquette to tip your crew. Check with your cruise line for recommended amounts and practices.

Navigating Onshore Excursions

  • Guided vs. Independent: Small ships often offer curated tours, but don’t be afraid to explore on your own. That hidden gelato shop or quiet seaside café might just become your favorite memory!
  • Safety First: Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in bustling markets or tourist spots. Keeping a scanned copy of your passport and important documents is also a smart move.

Foodie Delights

  • Local Tastes: One joy of docking closer to the heart of destinations? Fresh, local produce! Ask the chef about the day’s special inspired by the port of call.
  • Dining Ashore: Make it a point to dine out in at least one or two local establishments. From Spanish tapas to Greek mezze, your taste buds will thank you.

Cruise Etiquette

  • Engage & Respect: The beauty of small ship cruising is the close-knit community vibe. Engage with fellow travelers, respect privacy, and remember, the crew is there to make your journey memorable – kindness goes a long way!
  • Sustainability: We all love the pristine waters of the Mediterranean. Do your bit by minimizing waste, conserving water where possible, and avoiding single-use plastics.

Armed with these handy cruise tips , you’re all set to not just cruise but truly savor every moment of your Mediterranean adventure. And remember, while this guide gives you a solid foundation, the best memories often come from unexpected detours, spontaneous decisions, and an open heart. So let the Mediterranean winds guide you, and embrace the journey ahead!

  • Easter Celebrations: Witness the grandeur of Holy Week in places like Seville or experience the unique traditions of Corfu.

Summer: Sun-Kissed Adventures

  • Festivals Galore: From Cannes Film Festival to the lively feasts of Sicily, summer in the Mediterranean is a cultural bonanza.
  • Alfresco Evenings: Enjoy moonlit dinners on deck and savor the balmy sea breezes.

Autumn: A Harvest of Delights

  • Calm Seas: While summer often sees a lot of sailing action, fall brings calmer waters and a serene cruising experience.
  • Rich Hues: The landscapes transform into warm shades of golds, oranges, and reds, especially enchanting along the Turkish coast and Italian countryside.

Winter: A Cozy Coastal Sojourn

  • Less Crowds: Popular spots like Dubrovnik and Santorini are more peaceful, giving you a chance to experience them without the tourist rush.
  • Festive Vibes: Celebrate Christmas and New Year onboard with special events, or experience local traditions ashore.
  • Milder Winters: While Northern Europe shivers, the Mediterranean coast remains relatively mild, especially along the Spanish and southern Italian coasts.

Every season in the Mediterranean unfurls its own magic. From vibrant festivals and lush landscapes to tranquil beaches and festive celebrations, there’s always a reason to set sail. The key is to align your travel desires with the seasonal offerings. So, whether you’re chasing the sun or seeking serene shores, the Mediterranean is ready to enchant you, one season at a time.

Unique Experiences Exclusive to Small Ship Cruising

By now, you’re probably convinced that a Mediterranean cruise adventure aboard a small ship is the stuff of dreams.

But let’s dive a bit deeper and explore those exclusive experiences you can’t get on a colossal cruise liner. When you think small ship cruising, imagine more than just size—envision intimacy, depth, and unparalleled access.

Docking at Hidden Harbors

  • Into the Heart: Small ships can anchor close to the heart of destinations, letting you wake up with iconic views, like the Venice Grand Canal or the whitewashed buildings of Oia in Santorini.
  • Escape the Crowd: Bypass the main ports and explore off-the-radar gems like Portoferraio on Elba Island or the charming Spanish town of Roses.

Personalized Journeys

  • Custom Excursions: Small group sizes mean more tailored adventures. Whether it’s truffle hunting in Istria or a cooking class in Tuscany, the experiences are bespoke.
  • Flexibility: Ever wanted to linger at a port just a tad longer because you fell in love with a sunset or a local café? On many small ships, captains can adjust schedules for those magic moments.

Intimate Atmosphere

  • Know Your Crew: It’s not just about service; it’s about forming bonds. By the end of your voyage, you’ll likely know the names of the chef, the captain, and most of the crew.
  • Meet Like-minded Travelers: With fewer passengers, you get to genuinely interact with fellow explorers, forging connections that often last beyond the journey.

Immersive Cultural Connections

  • Authentic Interactions: Dance the Sirtaki with locals in a Greek taverna or share stories with artisans in a Provençal market. These aren’t staged events but genuine slices of Mediterranean life.
  • Deep Dives: Evening lectures, local storytellers, or onboard historians can offer insights into the cultural tapestry of your next port of call.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness

  • Minimal Impact: Smaller ships often have a lesser environmental footprint, ensuring the beautiful Mediterranean coasts remain pristine for future generations.

Preparing for Your Mediterranean Small Ship Cruise: Practical Considerations

Dreaming of the azure Mediterranean waters is wonderful, but ensuring that your trip goes off without a hitch requires some practical planning.

Let’s navigate through some essential pointers that will make your small ship cruise experience as smooth as the calmest Mediterranean seas!

Choosing the Right Cruise

  • Duration Matters: From short weekend getaways to extended two-week sojourns, determine how much time you can invest.
  • Theme-based Cruises: Some cruises cater to specific interests like gourmet cuisine, archaeology, or even yoga. Pick one that resonates with your passion.

Booking Flights:

  • Arrive Early: Consider arriving a day before your cruise starts. It’ll help you acclimatize and deal with potential flight delays.
  • Round-trip or One-way: Depending on your cruise’s start and end points, decide whether a round-trip ticket or two one-ways make more sense.

Travel Insurance:

  • Protection First: Cruises, like all travels, can sometimes face unforeseen issues. Ensure your policy covers cancellations, medical emergencies, and personal belongings.
  • Specialized Cruise Cover: Some insurers offer policies tailored for cruises, covering scenarios like missed port departures or cabin confinements.

Documentation:

  • Passport & Visas: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Additionally, check visa requirements for each country on your itinerary.
  • Onboard Documentation: Keep your cruise tickets, boarding passes, and any pre-booked excursion details handy.

Packing Essentials:

  • Adapters & Chargers: The Mediterranean covers several countries with varied plug types. Carry universal adapters and chargers for all your devices.
  • Medication & First Aid: While ships will have medical facilities, it’s wise to pack personal medications and a basic first aid kit.
  • Cruise Attire: While we covered this earlier, it’s worth reiterating the importance of versatile clothing. Factor in on-board events, shore excursions, and potential theme nights.

Stay Connected:

  • Internet & Communication: Some small ships might not offer robust Wi-Fi. Consider purchasing a local SIM for data or inform folks back home about potential communication gaps.
  • Local Language Apps: Download translation apps or simple phrasebooks. Even a few local words can make a world of difference in connecting with locals.

With the mesmerizing Mediterranean awaiting, it’s easy to get lost in the daydreams of coastal towns and sun-drenched beaches. But with a sprinkle of preparation and a dash of practicality, you can ensure that your dream voyage remains blissful from start to finish. After all, as they say in the sailing world, “Fortune favors the prepared mind (and traveler)!”

Savoring the Gastronomic Delights of the Mediterranean Onboard and Ashore

One of the undeniable highlights of venturing through the Mediterranean on a small ship cruise is the culinary voyage that parallels the nautical one.

Mediterranean cuisine , known for its fresh ingredients, rich flavors, and health benefits, takes center stage when you’re both onboard your ship and exploring the coastal towns.

Aboard Your Ship

  • Fresh and Local: Given the smaller scale of small ship cruises, chefs often source ingredients directly from local markets. Imagine savoring a Caprese salad with tomatoes and mozzarella bought that very morning from an Italian vendor.
  • Signature Dishes: Most ships offer a rotating menu based on the country or region you’re currently exploring. Relish paella as you cruise past Spain or moussaka while anchored off the Greek coast.
  • Interactive Experiences: Some cruises offer onboard cooking classes. Learn how to make traditional Mediterranean dishes under the guidance of the ship’s expert chef.

Ashore – Culinary Excursions

  • Market Tours: Delve deep into the vibrant local markets. From aromatic spices in a Turkish bazaar to the fresh seafood stalls in Marseille, it’s a sensory explosion.
  • Wine Tastings: The Mediterranean is dotted with world-renowned wine regions. Whether it’s sipping Sangiovese in Tuscany or tasting the unique varietals of Croatia, vineyards here offer a delightful excursion.
  • Farm to Table: Participate in olive oil tastings in Crete or cheese-making workshops in Corsica. Engaging directly with producers gives a deeper appreciation for the food on your plate.

Local Eateries – Dine Like a Local

  • Tavernas, Trattorias, and Tapas: While your ship offers a gourmet experience, sometimes the most memorable meals come from that family-run taverna or the bustling tapas bar. Explore and find where the locals dine!
  • Street Food: Don’t miss out on local street foods. From the churros in Spain to the baklava in Greece, there’s a world of flavor waiting at every port.
  • Seafood Delights: Given you’re cruising the coast, relishing fresh seafood is a must. Oysters in Dubrovnik, calamari in Santorini, or bouillabaisse in Nice – the sea’s bounty is at your fingertips.

The Mediterranean isn’t just a treat for the eyes; it’s a gastronomic paradise. As you sail from one port to another, let your taste buds embark on their own journey.

From the ship’s gourmet offerings to the rustic charm of local eateries, every meal is a chapter in your Mediterranean story. As the Italians say, “A tavola non si invecchia” – at the table, one does not age. So, savor every moment and every bite!

Embracing the Rich Tapestry of Cultures: Stories from the Mediterranean

Beyond the picturesque landscapes and delectable cuisine lies the true heart of the Mediterranean – its people and their tales. Small ship cruising offers the unmatched opportunity to engage closely with the local cultures, enabling you to not just witness but truly participate in the age-old traditions and customs.

A Mosaic of Civilizations

  • Ancient Histories: Each port has its chronicles. Discover tales of ancient Greek gods, Roman gladiators, Moorish caliphs, and Byzantine emperors. From the ruins of Ephesus in Turkey to the amphitheaters of Rome, history is tactile here.
  • Centuries-old Festivals: Time your visit right and you might be a part of local celebrations. Experience Spain’s La Tomatina, or the Carnival of Venice, events that echo with centuries of tradition.

Authentic Interactions

  • The Fisherman’s Tale: In coastal towns, you might meet fishermen preparing for their next venture. Their stories, filled with sea lore, give an unparalleled insight into the region’s connection to the ocean.
  • Artisans at Work: From the ceramic craftsmen of Amalfi to the lace makers of Burano, witnessing artisans breathe life into their creations is magical.

Music & Dance – The Mediterranean Rhythms

  • Sirtaki in Greece: Let the locals teach you the steps of their traditional dances. Dance the Sirtaki in a Greek taverna or join a Flamenco session in a Spanish barrio.
  • The Melodies: Onboard or ashore, the strains of Mediterranean music, whether it’s the soulful Fado of Portugal or the lively Tarantella of Italy, connect you to the region’s soul.

Local Legends & Folklore

  • Myths Revisited: Every island, every port has its myths. Listen to tales of the Minotaur in Crete or the legendary stories of the Trojan War in Turkey.
  • Modern Anecdotes: But it’s not just about the ancient. Local guides, with their personal anecdotes and modern takes on age-old tales, bridge the past and the present for you.

The Mediterranean, while celebrated for its beauty, is, in essence, a vibrant tapestry of cultures, each thread spun with tales of yore. On a small ship cruise, you aren’t just a spectator; you’re an active participant in this grand narrative.

As you disembark from your journey, you’ll carry with you not just memories but stories, each echoing with the rhythms and hues of the Mediterranean.

Environmental Responsibility: Sustainable Small Ship Cruising in the Mediterranean

In an age where the delicate balance of our environment is paramount, it’s heartening to know that small ship cruising , with its smaller carbon footprint and more sustainable practices, is a choice that aligns with responsible tourism. Let’s dive into how this mode of travel harmonizes with the Mediterranean’s efforts to preserve its natural and cultural treasures.

Smaller is Kinder

  • Limited Footprint: Unlike their behemoth counterparts, small ships carry fewer passengers, leading to lesser strain on local infrastructure and ecosystems.
  • Navigating Tight Spots: Small ships can dock in less commercial, smaller ports, spreading out the tourism load and ensuring popular spots aren’t overwhelmed.

Eco-conscious Practices Onboard

  • Waste Management: Many small ship cruises prioritize waste reduction, ensuring limited dumping at sea and promoting recycling.
  • Green Technologies: With advancements, some vessels are adopting solar panels, eco-friendly engines, and water purification systems to minimize their environmental impact.

Supporting Local Economies

  • Local Sourcing: From food to onboard entertainment, sourcing locally not only provides passengers with an authentic experience but also boosts local businesses.
  • Excursions with Care: Many small ship cruises collaborate with local guides and prioritize excursions that respect local traditions and environments.

Awareness & Education

  • Onboard Seminars: Many cruises offer talks on local ecology, highlighting the importance of the Mediterranean’s biodiversity and how travelers can help protect it.
  • Guided Ethical Excursions: Tours often focus on understanding the balance of nature, like guided walks through the olive groves of Greece, teaching about sustainable farming practices.

Traveler’s Role

  • Leave No Trace: Adopt this principle. Whether you’re exploring a secluded beach or an ancient ruin, ensure you leave the place as untouched as you found it.
  • Support Local Artisans: Instead of mass-produced souvenirs, consider buying from local artisans. It’s a sustainable choice and a meaningful memento.

Choosing a small ship cruise in the Mediterranean isn’t just a nod to luxury and intimacy; it’s a declaration of your commitment to responsible travel.

The sea has many tales, and by choosing sustainable practices, you ensure that these tales remain for generations to come. As the Mediterranean whispers its stories through the gentle waves, let’s pledge to listen, cherish, and most importantly, protect.

Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. You can also relax in the bowsprit net overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for whales. For the more adventurous sailor, climbing the mast to 75 feet above the water affords unforgettable ocean views from your perch in one of the passenger crow's nests. Other features of Royal Clipper are its three-story atrium, trilevel dining room, and unique spa and health club with underwater portholes called the Captain Nemo Lounge.

The ship's seven-night Windward Islands itinerary sails round trip from Barbados with stops in Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts, Îles Des Saintes and St. Lucia. You'll even have an opportunity to sail alongside one of the line's sister ships and another tall ship – Star Flyer – to the island of Dominica . Royal Clipper's longer itineraries include several Grand Voyages: The 19-night cruise from Cannes in France to Lisbon in Portugal, for example, calls on other ports in France, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Wind

Launched in 1995, Silver Wind was Silversea's second of four vessels that the line built for the ultra-luxury market. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. The ship carries 274 guests and 239 crew and features elegant public rooms, including lounges for gazing out at the ocean or watching onboard entertainment. There's also an upscale bar, shipboard boutiques and a spa.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud

Exterior of Sea Cloud ship on the water.

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

If you've never been on this type of vessel, cruising under full sail on a tall ship is unlike any other experience. Sea Cloud does not rely on motors (though they are installed just in case), allowing the wind and sea to determine the ship's course whenever possible, guided by the skills and seamanship of the crew for navigation. This setup provides an opportunity to teach the art of sailing to the passengers. The captain of Sea Cloud and guests prefer to cruise under full sail, which is the lure of sailing on a windjammer. Life on board the ship is intimate and relaxed – just as you would find on a private yacht.

Amenities on Sea Cloud include a lido bar and deck and a restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the destination, which features local products, fresh fish and regional wines.

One of Sea Cloud's top itineraries, Between Lifestyles and Nature's Paradises, sails for seven nights from Monte Carlo, Monaco , to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca , with calls on less visited ports along the Mediterranean coast in southern France like La Ciotat and Collioure. You can also join the jet-setters in St. Barts with a front-row seat from your sailing ship for the Bucket Regatta. This 10-night adventure includes two days in the French West Indies island of St. Barts and other picturesque ports of call in the Caribbean.

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. The culinary program on Windstar's fleet is in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, so dining is a real treat. The three restaurant venues on Wind Star include Amphora, whose contemporary, international menu was created by James Beard-affiliated chefs. The romantic Candles offers an alfresco dining experience with grilled steaks and skewers, while the Veranda is the ship's casual breakfast and lunch buffet with outdoor seating.

The elegant Scandinavian-inspired design also features the patented X-Bow, offering eco-friendly benefits and a smoother, quieter ride.

National Geographic Endurance is 407 feet in length and has 69 spacious staterooms with large windows or balconies to accommodate up to 126 passengers. The ship also carries 112 crew. Unique onboard amenities include the first polar art exhibit at sea, curated by environmental artist Zaria Forman, and the first igloos at sea. Guests can arrange to spend an evening under the stars in these glass domes, which are available to reserve on a first-come, first-served basis.

Passengers can also enjoy one complimentary evening at the Chef's Table, sustainable cuisine during their voyage, a lounge and bar area, outdoor infinity-style hot tubs, a yoga studio, saunas with a view of the sea, and state-of-the-art facilities for presentations and films. Every expedition also has a National Geographic photographer and a certified photo instructor and video chronicler.

For an unforgettable rendezvous with nature, book a 10-night cruise called Land of the Ice Bears. This adventure sails to the best place in the world to view polar bears: the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. In addition to many opportunities to see those amazing animals, you'll also encounter walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes and fur seals. Another incredible journey for the extreme adventurer is the 35-day Epic Antarctica sailing. This expedition will venture to remote West Antarctica and explore the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia, traveling to destinations where possibly few – or even no – humans have set foot before.

Built in 1998, Safari Explorer is 145 feet in length and one of UnCruise Adventures' four Safari-class ships in its expedition-style fleet. Nicknamed "the Bulldog," this ship transports passengers to wild and remote areas that larger ships can't navigate. The 36-passenger yacht was recently renovated with interior refinishes, touch-ups and upgrades. There are just 18 cabins and 18 crew.

The lifestyle is casual on board, and guests have access to three decks with a library, dining room, rooftop sun lounge and exercise equipment. You'll find common areas on the main deck such as the salon, bar and wine bar. When it's time to hit the water or go ashore, the vessel is equipped with expedition gear, including kayaks, inflatable skiffs, paddleboards, snorkel equipment and more.

In the summer months, Safari Explorer sets off in search of humpback whales in Alaska and spends winters island hopping in Hawaii. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes sailing cruises to four islands, including stops in Molokai, Lanai , Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii . There are two itineraries in Alaska. The seven-night Alaska Glacier Cruise itinerary sails one way from Juneau to Sitka through the northern passages. For an extended expedition that includes wilderness areas with even more opportunities for wildlife and whale viewing, book the 12-night Cruise to Alaska voyage from Seattle to Juneau.

Ponant: Le Commandant Charcot

Ponant's first high polar expedition vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, launched in September 2021. The 492-foot-long ship is eco-friendly and powered by liquefied natural gas with the latest innovations and technologies. Le Commandant Charcot is also the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration vessel.

All of the 123 staterooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace. The atmosphere for the 245 passengers on board is much like that of a private yacht, given an extraordinary ratio of passengers to crew with 215 crew members. Two culinary options, gastronomic restaurant Nuna and casual dining concept Sila, are part of a collaboration with Ducasse Conseil and Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse; the menus are designed by the renowned French chef. Guests can enjoy complimentary French wine, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and Ladurée macarons throughout their voyage.

You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. Not to be missed is the wellness area, which is a partnership with Biologique Recherche and features amenities like a 14 degrees Fahrenheit snow room with fresh powder snow, a sauna and an indoor pool. On the pool deck, passengers can enjoy a sunroom, a heated outdoor blue lagoon, a giant fire pit, an outdoor bar and the Blue Lagoon bar.

Le Commandant Charcot sails to the farthest points in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including Antarctica and the North Pole. The 24-night Northwest Passage cruise takes guests from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nome, Alaska, and features polar activities like kayaking between the ice floes, snowshoeing, ice fishing or even exploring with a naturalist guide by hovercraft. The 15-night Geographic North Pole expedition sailing from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, in Norway pushes the limit of sailing to the northernmost point in the world. Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship able to reach the geographic North Pole.

Australian-owned Greg Mortimer is a 341-foot-long purpose-built expedition ship, and the first passenger ship designed with the Ulstein X-Bow. This state-of-the-art design offers environmental benefits such as producing fewer emissions and requiring less fuel. The unique bow design also provides a smoother cruise experience when crossing rough seas like the Drake Passage en route to Antarctica. In addition, the ship's Rolls Royce dynamic stabilizers contribute to the vessel's stability and lower its fuel consumption.

The vessel was built in 2019, features 79 cabins with ocean views – 85% of which have balconies – and can accommodate an average of 132 passengers and 74 crew. Onboard amenities include bars and lounges, the main dining room, lecture facilities, a library, a mudroom to store wet expedition gear, a spa, a sauna and a gym. The ship also has hydraulic viewing platforms offering unobstructed views of the local marine and wildlife, as well as 15 Zodiac boats that launch from four platforms.

With Greg Mortimer and its new sister ship, Sylvia Earle, Aurora Expeditions travels to wild and remote destinations around the world. Popular itineraries include its nine- to 23-day Antarctica voyages, navigating icy waters on the 17-day Northwest Passage expedition from Canada or on the 11-day Iceland Circumnavigation cruise, which sails round trip from Reykjavik.

nacho_gutierrez/Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

If the biggest luxury is convenience, Scenic is among the top cruise lines to pick. The Australian-based company features all-inclusive trips — no upgraded drinks package needed — on a 228-passenger, all-suite ship for an intimate experience. Guests can travel in six-star luxury with a personal butler assigned to each cabin. Turn to helicopters (and even a submersible) for a different view of a destination.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Escape: Spain & the French Riviera

This eight-day itinerary moves along the coast of Spain to the French Riviera. With stops in hallmark ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, and Monte Carlo, there's no need to worry about missing out on these popular destinations. Quiet, less-visited ports include Costa Brava's Roses and Villefranche-sur-Mer just outside of Nice. Take to the sky for an aerial view of Sanary-sur-Mer inside Scenic Eclipse 's private helicopter. On the island of Corsica, visit the historic citadel and old town, which Napoleon Bonaparte freed from Italian rule in 1791. This journey spans the bright lights of elegant cities to quiet, luxurious beaches, giving travelers the best of both.

Michel Verdure/Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn cruises are made for those who enjoy a touch of grandeur. The cruise line offers all-inclusive options, making it easy to relax on board and just enjoy the ride. A wide range of Mediterranean destinations and cruise lengths, from seven to 30 days, means everyone can find the right fit.

The itinerary sprinkles in a few Turkish delights, including Kusadasi and Bozcaada, before disembarking in Istanbul. Excursions include guided tours of historical sites like the Grotto of St. John in Patmos and wine tastings in Bozcaada.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Edgardo Contreras/Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Synonymous with luxury and comfort, The Ritz-Carlton's superyachts are an extension of the company's hotels. Each of the three boats can accommodate around 400 passengers with its smallest ship, Evrima , holding just 298 people. Fine dining abounds on board with five restaurants and six lounges to choose from. Guests can expect plush furnishings and modern design. Though all rooms are terrace suites, there are also two-story loft suites and owner's suites with spacious private terraces.

Trip to Try: Evrima Barcelona to Barcelona

Travelers will see the western Mediterranean on a six-night, round-trip voyage to Barcelona. After departing the lively Spanish city, settle into a suite and enjoy the yacht's amenities with a full day at sea. In Gibraltar, venture to Gorham's Cave, which dates to the days of Neanderthals. The ship returns to the Spanish coast with stops in Málaga (Picasso's hometown), Cartagena with its notable Roman ruins, and the picturesque island of Ibiza.

Viking Cruises

White Rain/Viking Cruises

Those looking for an adults-only option will find exactly what they need with Viking Cruises. Since the company's offerings are strictly for guests ages 18 and up, you can expect a mature cruising environment. With itineraries ranging from western Europe to holy lands on the eastern Mediterranean, finding a cruise that fits your travel desires is a snap. The cruise line offers free shore excursions, enabling guests to fully experience the ports.

Enhance the journey by booking additional excursions tailored to specific interests such as architecture or cuisine. Book pre- and post-trip stays to further explore ports of call.

Explora Journeys

Launched by the Aponte family, the founders of shipping and cruise company MSC Group, Explora Journeys offers high-end vacations with uncompromising, livable cruise ship cabins, which are more like small apartments. With a maritime heritage in the region that stretches back to the 17th century, the family has carefully selected ports that reflect their own travels.

Trip to Try: A Journey to UNESCO Malta & Balearic Bliss

Spend 10 days sailing across the western Mediterranean aboard an all-suite ship designed with clean, simple lines. Bookended by Rome and Barcelona, this voyage includes stops at classic Italian destinations such as Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. But what sets it apart from other Mediterranean itineraries are stops in Malta, Tunisia, and Menorca. Sicily's best beaches, fortified walls, and whitewashed mosques are just a few of the varied landscapes guests will see. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the spacious suites, penthouses, ocean residences (up to 1,064 square feet), and multiroom owner's suites make cruising feel like home.

Azamara is a sumptuous option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The company also emphasizes hyperlocal experiences that allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, and culture at ports, if only for a day. There are a variety of destinations and trip lengths, including 10-, 12-, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

Trip to Try:   11-night Egypt/Israel Intensive Voyage

Make your way through four counties (Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this 11-night adventure. The voyage emphasizes the region’s dramatic history, highlighting destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors. Shore excursion options include exploring the famed Acropolis of Athens, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambience of Limassol, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus, for an entire day.

Emerald Cruises

Cultural experiences are central to Emerald Cruises. Whether you enjoy private performances from local musicians or active adventures like hiking to a city's fortified walls, guests aboard these sleek yachts will see the best of a destination. No need to worry about tipping, upgrading a drinks package, or purchasing standard excursions; the fare is all-inclusive. Onboard accommodations range from spacious, minimalist rooms with an ocean view to yacht suites featuring a private terrace with lounge chairs.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Enchantment

Journey from Athens, home of the Acropolis, to Croatia's renowned walled city, Dubrovnik, during this seven-night trip. Emerald notably does not skip over Albania, though there are plenty of stops along Greece's west coast and nearby islands. One of its coastal towns, Sarandë, features stunning lapis waters and serves as a gateway to UNESCO-recognized Butrint. Other notable tours include the ruins of Corfu and Kotor's walls.

Oceania Cruises

Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. With a low guest-to-crew member ratio, your every need is easily met. Mediterranean sailings include seven-, 12-, 21-, and even 30-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this company, you’re almost spoiled with choices, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about this year’s trip — and next year's.

Trip to Try:   Monte Carlo to Athens

The 10-day trip takes travelers through affluent ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, this journey's shore excursions abound. There’s plenty to do on board too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.

Celebrity Cruises

Bernard Biger, Chantiers de l'Atlantique/Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from children to grandparents — should check out Celebrity Cruises and the 16 ships that make up its fleet . With ample options for everyone on board (think kids clubs to casinos), varied shore excursions, and affordable pricing, these trips are viable for larger groups.

Trip to Try:   Best of Italy and Croatia

The 11-night trip takes guests to 10 ports through Italy and Croatia, providing varied terrain and plentiful shore excursion options. Visit beautiful seaside towns like Portofino, explore the fortified walls of Dubrovnik, and enjoy the ship's amenities during days at sea.

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers on board. The line offers ships with 51 to 364 suites, which enables more personalized service and refined amenities. It also offers packages to reduce the stress that comes with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Venice to Athens

This 11-day trip makes its way through 11 ports in four countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. Walk cobblestone streets, see the distinctive windmills of Santorini, discover buzzing nightlife and secluded beaches on the Croatian island of Hvar, and more. On board, dine in one of the ship’s restaurants, take a dip in the pool, or lounge in a common space to discuss the day’s adventure with fellow guests.

A lavish French cruise line, Ponant has been sailing since 1988. Today, the small boats, Ponant Explorers, are outfitted with just 92 suites that can serve no more than 184 travelers. Throughout the boat, guests will find light-filled spaces and cozy cabins. These ships feature Blue Eye, an unusual lounge set below sea level for an underwater view of the ship's surroundings. From polar expeditions to countries nestled along the Mediterranean, Ponant is a reliable option for those seeking an immersive experience.

Trip to Try: Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights: Cruising Southern Italy and Sicily

Partnered with Smithsonian Journeys, Ponant offers a gourmand's Italian dream on this eight-day cruise. This trip begins in Valletta, Malta, before sailing to Sicily and up the Italian coastline to Livorno. Guests can drink volcanic wines in Taormina, eat Neapolitan pizza in Naples, and see fresh mozzarella made in Agropoli. Back on board, a guest chef prepares destination-inspired dishes. In addition to Italy's culinary delights, there are plenty of opportunities to see classic sites such as the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Cabins range from 151-square-foot interior staterooms to 712-square-foot suites to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  14-Day Adriatic Dream

The 14-day trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). Take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa on days at sea with the bonus of rocking waves that lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is another that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but the line more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, and kids and teen programming. Sink into the plush beds, which were created in collaboration with a sleep expert, for a great night's rest to feel fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  10-day Mediterranean and Israel

The 10-day trip stops in six ports across Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with oversized balconies.

Cunard Line

Classically elegant, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if style is your top priority. Its boats are opulent, including the Queen Elizabeth , which features art deco-influenced interiors and plush sundeck furnishings. Of course, high-end dining experiences are included.

Trip to Try:  Western Mediterranean

Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from England to Italy. Visit Seville from Cadiz, see Gaudí's architecture in Barcelona, tour Napoleon Bonaparte's childhood home on the island of Corsica, and shop your way through Rome. With several days at sea, you can make the most of onboard amenities.

Virgin Voyages

There's no doubt that Virgin Voyages is a departure from traditional cruising. With plush cabins and the promise of a party atmosphere, the cruise line has ditched many industry mainstays. Instead, guests will find PJ parties, pop-up circus installations, and open seating for over 20 meals designed by Michelin-starred chefs.

Trip to Try: The Irresistible Med

When you set sail on The Irresistible Med from Barcelona to Ibiza, there are plenty of opportunities to explore beaches, museums, and historic sites. For those hoping to visit the quaint villages of Provence, the French port of Toulon provides an easy access point. Other stops include Marina di Carrara, known for its sumptuous marble, and the island of Corsica. Enjoy a day of relaxation by sweating it out in the sauna or lounging poolside when out at sea. Ibiza is the final port-of-call, which gives guests plenty of time to enjoy the party capital on their own.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is the one to choose for groups with varied interests. Think, kids who want to play all day, adults who want to lounge by the pool, friends who want to take a historical tour, or those who want to stay up enjoying the onboard entertainment. It's also one of the few cruise lines to offer Mediterranean options for those short on time or who want to add a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  Three-Night Western Mediterranean

Spend three perfect days sailing from Rome to Barcelona. The quick cruise is a great way to hit the water if you want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. With a day in Naples, and access to Capri, check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have a comfortable place to call home each night.

Small-Ship Mediterranean Cruise: 9 Things to Remember About Life on Board

By Rebecca Hall

September 21, 2023

If you want a Greek islands experience that's intimate, explores lesser-seen sun-and-sand destinations, and experiences Greek culture at its best, then a small-ship adventure might suit you better than the giant cruise ships that are so heavily marketed to vacationers.

To show you how the small-ship experience differs from mainstream options, we took the Classical Greece  itinerary with Variety Cruises, a line that presents a selection of trips in the region, on board its 223-foot "Mega Yacht" (the company's term)  Voyager .

Is commercial shared yacht cruising around the Mediterranean in Greece for you? Here are some considerations.

All photographs were taken by the author.

The intimate size leaves few places to hide.

Variety’s Voyager accommodates up to 72 guests in 36 cabins. By comparison, rival company WindStar’s offers a Greek itinerary aboard Wind Star ,  a 4-masted sailing ship that accommodates 148 guests, but there are even smaller ships on the market, such as Elixir’s The Elysium , with just 25 cabins.

The intimate ship size means fewer places to be alone, so you’ll unavoidably interact with most of your fellow passengers. That creates a familial atmosphere, but if you prefer to remain anonymous and keep to yourself, you might best stick to larger vessels.

As a solo traveler, I actually enjoyed mingling as much or as little as I wanted to, and I still managed to find the odd nook or cranny for myself, especially on the sun deck (pictured below).

small cruise ships in mediterranean

Amenities are limited, but they do the job.

A small ship can't offer a huge range of facilities, but there's still plenty to divert you.

On the Variety , the main deck (pictured below) served as a welcome place to relax in air conditioned comfort away from my cabin.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

Beneath that, the lower deck had an exercise area with a handful of machines (pictured below) plus a mini-spa with one treatment room, sauna, and Jacuzzi.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

On sea days, passengers relaxed on the sun deck's cushioned chaises. Some larger ships have facilities for swimming on board, but the Variety  is small enough that the crew permits swimming off the stern at scheduled stops, so I felt no need for a pool. Most days, we were exploring ports anyway.

The ship isn't too small for a bar, though, and each evening, the mixologist at  Voyager ’s al fresco bar (pictured below) shook up a cocktail of the day. When we anchored off Crete, the crew invited a local dance exhibition to come aboard, with the opportunity for passengers to join in.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

The ship's small size allows for more interesting ports.

All the cruise lines, including boutique ones like Variety, will call on the perennially popular islands of  Santorini and Mykonos . But one benefit of smaller lines is their boats can fit at smaller, lesser-visited island and mainland ports. Voyager ’s size allowed us to dock at the tiny island of Kythera in the Ionian Sea—it has no airport, so it's not ruined by the Jet Set crowd. Another unusual destination we hit was the UNESCO Medieval coastal rock town of  Monemvassia , on the mainland in the Peloponnese.

Access to shore from the ship was either by walking directly ashore using a narrow gangplank or tendering on the ship’s small Zodiacs (life jackets provided).

You'll probably sit with other passengers at dinner.

Unlike a huge cruise ship, there’s not a round-the-clock buffet with a huge selection; meals are served within set time periods without mandatory seat assignments. The circular tables of  Voyager ’s Horizons buffet dining room seat eight, so most guests will dine with others, although there were a few more tables on the veranda. Tables for two were uncommon and usually taken.

My Classical Greece itinerary served at least two full meals a day: always breakfast, then a buffet lunch or dinner. When we were in port, our schedules usually allowed for one full meal to be eaten in town, at the passengers' own expense, unless it was included in a tour.

The cuisine favors local flavors.

On board, the chef focused on Mediterranean dishes such as moussaka, stuffed tomatoes, and bell peppers as well as humble crowdpleasers like pizza and pasta. Salad was plentiful, as were dips of homemade tzatziki and a choice of fruit or Greek desserts like baklava (pictured below). Special dietary requests were honored as long as they were placed in advance.

The first and last nights were catered, 5-course affairs in the presence of the captain.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

Cabins are cozy and beds aren't huge.

At roughly 130 square feet (12 sq. m.), my Category B cabin (pictured below) located on the main deck, and because I was traveling alone, my bed was actually composed of two twin beds pushed together. (If I had been traveling with someone else, the beds could have been separated, but the space between them would have been a squeeze.)

On slightly rocky nights, my body would naturally gravitate into the depression in the center seam of the bed. Mattress toppers are available, or you can specify a true double mattress in some of Voyager ’s categories.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

On most small ships, your stateroom won't have a balcony or veranda, and window sizes vary even within the same category, so check the deck plan when you reserve. My cabin had two small windows that filtered in a little light, but they weren't panoramic. Strategically placed floor-to-ceiling mirrors lend a slightly more spacious feel.

En-suite bathrooms (pictured below) are surprisingly large compared to the cabin, with great shower pressure and locally sourced gels and shampoos. Voyager may be small, but it's still designed for comfort. You'll get a shower but not a tub.

small cruise ships in mediterranean

Between islands, the ship may pitch and roll.

On small ship cruises, which typically sail around the Greek islands during tourist season from April to October, the month you go can matter. In August, the strong Meltemi winds occurring across the Aegean are at their strongest, often reaching  7 on the Beaufort scale , enough to make the seawater foam from breaking waves.

The smaller the ship, the more the pitching and rolling are keenly felt, especially in August. (I have a cast-iron stomach, but the night we departed Athens, the ship was rolling so much that many of my fellow passengers headed straight to bed after dinner.) If you’re prone to seasickness, book a cabin as low as possible and in the middle of the ship, where motion is usually more limited.

I find September is the best time to sail between the Greek islands. The waters become calmer and warmer for swimming, the sting of excessive summer heat recedes, and destinations become less crowded when schools return.

Don't expect an elevator.

Small ship cruising is can be more difficult for passengers with mobility needs. Voyager had no elevator going between its four levels, and access to shore was either by gangway or a tiny tender boat. It helps to to be physically capable of getting in and out of the small Zodiac dinghies used to ferry passengers to some ports.

Boutique small ships are cheaper than chartering a yacht.

A trip aboard a small luxury ship around Greece is a more affordable way to travel than chartering your own yacht with a group of friends. An eight-day Classical Greece voyage with Variety Cruises costs from US $2,160 per person in a Category C lower deck cabin, plus port fees.

Crewed yacht charters booked through agents such as  Yacht Charter Fleet  can easily add an extra zero to the end of that price.

The 18 best small cruise ships sailing the world

Heidi Sarna

In a world where gigantic megaships draw all the attention, I've always found small ships to be the best.

I've sailed on more than 125 cruise ships of all sizes, but my favorites have never been the big "floating resorts."

I'm drawn to the intimacy and instant community that develops between a small number of passengers and crew cruising together. I enjoy the serenity of small-ship cruising, with no lines to wait in or crowds to contend with on board.

I also gravitate to the off-beat itineraries small ships offer because they focus on unusual and remote places that only small vessels can access.

Who needs the bustling Caribbean when you can explore Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean; lesser-known Greek Islands like Skopelos and Skiathos; French Polynesia; or the Galapagos Islands?

People often ask me which are the best small ship cruises, and that question is difficult to answer.

The new high-tech expedition ships, outfitted with the latest hardware and design touches, are incredibly appealing. However, I also adore certain older small ships for their heritage and atmosphere.

Of course, the best small ship for you may depend on where you wish to sail and whether you're looking for a relaxing yacht-like experience or a rugged adventure.

If you're like me and find that bigger isn't always better, this list is for you. Here are 18 of the world's best ocean-going small cruise ships, both older and new. Each carries fewer than 400 passengers and all are ideal for your next intimately sized travel adventure.

How small? 128 passengers. Best for: Gadget-loving adventurers.

Lindblad Expeditions has been a leader in small-ship expedition cruising since 1966 when company founder Lars-Eric Lindblad pioneered expeditions to Antarctica, Easter Island and the Galapagos.

Today, the line's fleet of small ships explores nearly the entire planet, always with an impressive lineup of experts and photographers along for the ride.

Lindblad's newest 128-passenger ships, National Geographic Resolution (2021) and National Geographic Endurance (2020), were built for hard-core exploration in the polar regions they call home.

They sport a striking X-bow design (an inverted ship bow design for fuel efficiency), a polar class rating of PC 5 Category A (a notch above most Antarctica cruise ships), and a dynamic positioning system that keeps the ships hovering quietly in place.

Passengers can utilize each ship's fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks and stash of snowshoes and cross-country skis that aid in exploration.

High-tech toys, such as a remotely operated vehicle and underwater video camera, hydrophone, remote-controlled aerial camera and video microscope, allow guests to view footage of undersea life wherever the ships may be.

The ships also feature a gym, yoga studio, spa, ocean-view saunas, library and two dining venues. On deck, two infinity hot tubs offer amazing views.

All cabins are outward-facing (and 12 are single cabins, a rarity) with an "expedition command center" that includes a tablet, multiple electrical and USB outlets, a TV, a barometer and a National Geographic Atlas.

Cruise fare covers wine and spirits, excursions and excursion gear.

SeaDream Yacht Club: SeaDream I and II

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 112 passengers. Best for: Yacht enthusiasts seeking the sun.

SeaDream Yacht Club 's 40-year-old ships may not be new, but they're still some of the prettiest classic luxury yachts afloat. Suites don't have balconies. However, they're spacious, recently refurbished, and feature wood details that evoke a classic nautical feel.

What the ships lack in modern touches, they make up for in experience and service. The food is excellent and served both on the romantic outdoor decks and inside the cozy restaurant.

The line's iconic weekly beach barbecue on a remote stretch of sand, complete with Champagne and caviar in the surf, is a cruise highlight on all itineraries. An open bar contributes to the social atmosphere on board, and watersports from a stern marina when conditions are right are a great perk for active travelers.

The SeaDream twins winter in the Caribbean and summer in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and Scandinavia.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud I

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 64 passengers. Best for: History buffs and sailing ship lovers.

The one-of-a-kind, four-masted Sea Cloud was originally commissioned as a private luxury yacht by multi-millionaire Wall Street titan E. F. Hutton in 1931. Hutton's extravagant heiress and businesswoman wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, oversaw the ship's interior design, outfitting it in marble, mahogany and gold-plated fixtures.

After passing through various owners, Sea Cloud I has spent the last several decades offering casually elegant windjammer cruises to old-ship lovers from Europe and North America.

Passengers choose from 10 original cabins, including Post's own suite with its Louis XIV–style bed and nightstands, marble fireplace and bathroom, chandeliers and intricate moldings.

Sea Cloud winters in the Caribbean and summers in Mediterranean, visiting the Greek Islands, Italy and the Canary Islands.

UnCruise Adventures: Wilderness Legacy

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 90 passengers. Best for: Sporty cruisers who love quirky ships.

Constructed in 1983, UnCruise Adventures ' Wilderness Legacy is truly a one-of-a-kind quirky ship. Its throw-back style exterior harkens back to a 20th-century steamboat.

The ship attracts a loyal fan base thanks to its roomy size and cabins that open onto covered promenade decks (rather than a central interior corridor). It even features a hot tub on deck and an elevator, a rarity on older small adventure ships like this.

The portable, custom-made "sea dragon" platform at the stern makes for easy access to kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming, activities popular with UnCruise's sporty fans. The adventurous can also enjoy hiking, bushwhacking and cycling in some ports.

Fares include everything from wine, beer and spirits to daily excursions.

The largest ship in the UnCruise fleet and built for coastal cruising, Wilderness Legacy spends its time in Alaska's Inside Passage and Glacier Bay National Park, as well as on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 227 passengers. Best for: Sailing enthusiasts with a penchant for the past.

Star Clippers' handsome five-masted tall ship Royal Clipper is considered the largest square rigger in service. Modeled after the great 1902 German clipper Preussen, the ship is a real throwback, with lots of wood and brass features and nautical-style elements.

Royal Clipper also has impressive modern niceties for a ship of its size, including three small pools and an aft marina for easy access to complimentary water sports. It also offers a small gym and spa.

In the winter, Royal Clipper island hops around the Caribbean, sailing round trip from Barbados to some of the lesser-known islands. During the summer, it cruises the Mediterranean along the French and Italian rivieras and explores the coast of Croatia and the Canary Islands.

Windstar Cruises: Wind Star and Wind Spirit

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 148 passengers. Best for: Romantics and foodies.

Windstar Cruises ' 148-passenger four-masted motorized yachts are beloved for their upscale yet casual sailing vibe and great food in partnership with the James Beard Foundation.

Standing on deck when the sails are unfurled is one of the more romantic moments you'll likely experience on any ship.

The expansive wooden sun decks on Wind Star and Wind Spirit make you want to be on topside as much as possible to enjoy the yachting life. Each has multiple dining options, both indoor and on deck, including a weekly barbecue on deck under the stars.

Both have a stern marina for easy access to water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding.

The cozy cabins aren't huge, but they are well-appointed with wood details and nautical flair. Suites are a combination of two cabins.

Windstar offers both cruise-only and all-inclusive fares. You can build an a la carte vacation or pay upfront for an easy trip that includes an open bar, unlimited Wi-Fi and included crew gratuities.

Wind Spirit is stationed in the islands of French Polynesia, sailing year-round out of Tahiti through February 2024. Wind Star is its globe-trotting sister, focusing mostly on the Greek Islands in the summer and Costa Rica and Panama in the winter.

Ponant: L'Austral

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 264 passengers (200 in Antarctica). Best for: Chic Francophile foodies.

Ponant has been busy launching six new ships in its impressive Explorers series. However, L'Austral (with sister ships Le Boreal, Le Soleal and Le Lyrial) is my favorite ship in the fleet.

Why? L'Austral is the ideal size for a small ship — intimate but still large enough for amenities such as a gym, spa and show lounge.

Its gorgeous tiered stern decks feature a lovely outdoor pool area at the back of Deck 6 with a perfect stretch of deck for sunbathing and scenery watching and an open-air bar above for stunning views.

With Ponant's French pedigree, it's not surprising that food is a cut above, especially the desserts, cheeses and wine. I had the best chocolate mousse of my life on L'Austral. Dine outdoors on the pool deck or in the elegant indoor restaurant. Enhance your evening with complimentary wine (mostly French), Charles Heidsieck Champagne, beer and spirits.

L'Austral explores both polar regions and spends time in the Mediterranean, cruising along the coast of Croatia and around the smaller, less touristy Greek Islands like Amorgos, Milos and Delos.

Emerald Cruises: Emerald Azzurra

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 100 passengers. Best for: Travelers seeking intimate luxury.

Emerald Cruises' new Emerald Azzurra (and soon-to-debut sister Emerald Sakara) is one of the smallest luxury cruise ships afloat and a good choice for travelers who want something more intimate than what Silversea or Seabourn offer.

The ship's six gleaming white-tiered decks sport a futuristic pyramid-like profile that turns heads when it arrives in port.

Emerald Azzurra features a watersports platform at the stern for convenient access to kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling and riding SEABOBs (electric underwater scooter-like jet skis). Inside, you can avail of a small gym and spa.

Choose from open-air and indoor dining for your meals. Wine and spirits are included, so take advantage of two impressive outdoor spots for a drink and stunning views — the Sky Bar at the top of the ship and the chic infinity pool at the stern of Deck 3, adjacent to a lounge and cafe.

Itineraries focus on the Mediterranean during the summer, with mostly one- to two-week cruises that call on ports along the coasts of Croatia, Albania, Italy, France, Turkey and the Greek Islands. It spends the winters in the Caribbean.

Explore these destinations in depth with included excursions.

Scenic Cruises: Scenic Eclipse

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 228 passengers (200 in polar regions). Best for: Design fans with wanderlust.

An impressively kitted-out expedition ship, Scenic Eclipse has an ice-strengthened hull with a C6 rating suited for polar cruising, including navigating the Northwest Passage. High-tech features include a GPS dynamic positioning system to maintain a location without dropping anchor.

The Australia-based line's debut into ocean cruising had Scenic Eclipse drawing attention with impressive additions like a pair of six-passenger helicopters and a five-passenger submarine (both offered at an additional cost), as well as kayaks, zodiacs and e-bikes. (Sister Scenic Eclipse II is set to debut soon.)

The ship's sleek angled silhouette makes for a handsome profile. The eye-catching interior is sophisticated, with a stark black, gray and beige color palette, lovely wood details, white Carrara marble surfaces and bold art.

Passengers can enjoy a relatively large spa and fitness area, plus multiple dining venues, including Asian, Japanese, French and Continental restaurants. Wine and spirits are included in the fare.

While small luxury ships typically have fancy owners' suites, the pair of top accommodations on Scenic Eclipse is on another level. Each measures over 2,000 square feet with a huge forward-facing teak-lined terrace, complete with a large whirlpool tub.

Scenic Eclipse cruises to nearly every corner of the world, including French Polynesia and the Pacific Islands, Australia, the Indonesian archipelago and Antarctica. The cruise fare includes excursions.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Endeavour

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 200 passengers. Best for: Intrepid travelers who demand the utmost luxury.

Silversea Cruises is a pro at luxury small-ship cruising — the line has been at it for more than 30 years. With Silver Endeavour, it achieves the perfect mix of ultra-luxury surroundings with tough-as-nails expedition hardware for its focus on polar cruising.

On board, many rooms are veranda suites measuring 356 square feet (including a private balcony), all with marble baths. The largest Grand and Owner's suites are massive multi-room affairs with huge private verandas. The passenger-to-crew ratio is one-to-one; service is excellent.

For dining, there are four main restaurants, including an Italian and a French-inspired venue. The Grill is an eatery enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass for the best views in the house.

There's an impressive spa, salon and gym with panoramic ocean views and several lounges for drinks (always included) and lectures.

Near the well-stocked library is the Expedition Study, where the 20-member expedition team is accessible for questions. Outdoor deck space includes the forward-facing bow area with an outdoor hot tub.

With its PC6 ice-class rating, Silver Endeavour spends November through April in Antarctica and the rest of the year in the Arctic, including Greenland, Arctic Canada, Iceland and Norway. Excursions are always complimentary.

Seabourn: Seabourn Venture

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 264 passengers. Best for: Travelers with high standards for luxury and special itineraries.

Seabourn 's new Seabourn Venture (and upcoming sister Seabourn Pursuit) are on par with Silver Endeavour and Scenic Eclipse when it comes to pairing top-of-the-line luxury and pampering with incredible itineraries.

Elegant interiors include a main restaurant, several lounges and bars where drinks are all included, a plush lecture hall, a cafe for coffee and snacks, and spacious balcony suites that start from 355 square feet (including the balcony).

The windowed fitness center and spa area includes an ocean-view sauna and the infinity pool at the back of Deck 5 boasts killer views.

Not just a pretty ship, Seabourn Venture is tough, built to PC6 Polar Class standards for a focus on expedition cruising in the polar regions. The ship carries two submarines, as well as a fleet of double sea kayaks and 24 Zodiacs that can accommodate all guests at once.

Seabourn's large expedition team leads daily complimentary excursions, such as Zodiac sightseeing tours, shore walks, hikes, snorkeling and kayak outings. Also, accomplished guest lecturers give onboard talks.

Like Silver Endeavour, Seabourn Venture will spend the year in the polar regions, with long repositioning cruises in between, such as a 51-day Antarctica, Atlantic and Northwest Africa voyage from Buenos Aires to Malaga, Spain.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: World Navigator

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 196 passengers. Best for: Travelers craving luxury and lots of open deck space.

World Navigator is a deluxe expedition ship sporting a 1B Ice Class-certified hull and the latest technologies, such as a GPS-based dynamic position system to minimize movement and noise.

Multiple dining options include the main restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the ship's wake and a steakhouse on the Lido Deck. For cocktails, head to either of two piano bars, the Dome Observation Lounge or the Atlas Lounge, just outside the lecture theatre.

The Atlas Ocean Voyages ship has terrific outdoor spots for remarkable views (not hogged by a helipad or stern and aft suite balconies), including a close-to-the-water spot on Deck 5 forward and a "secret" arc of deck on Deck 6 aft.

You can also take in the scenery from the ship's shallow pool and two adjacent hot tubs.

Don't miss the spa, even if you don't book a massage. It features an appealing seating area facing the sea and an ocean-view sauna. Walkers and joggers keep fit on the top-of-ship track.

World Navigator's itineraries focus on the polar regions, but the ship visits Europe and the Canary Islands while repositioning.

Landings and Zodiac safaris are included on Antarctica cruises, but excursions are not included on other itineraries. All non-polar cruises offered from April through October are called Epicurean Expeditions (with one complimentary wine- or food-focused experience per cruise).

American Queen Voyages: Ocean Victory

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 186 passengers. Best for: In-depth Alaska cruises for nature lovers.

Newcomer Ocean Victory is large for a small cruise ship, which allows it to offer more on its Alaska expeditions.

Its sizable expedition team, which can number 18 on select voyages, comprises seasoned authorities in a wide range of fields, such as geology, whale communications and photography. Team members lead complimentary excursions on sea kayaks and 18 Zodiacs so passengers can experience glaciers, icebergs and wildlife up close.

In place of an observation bow with direct views of the water, as many similar ships offer, Victory has a pair of viewing platforms on each side of the ship, thanks to its distinctive X-bow design. These platforms are cantilevered directly over the water for great views of bergy bits and potential marine life.

The American Queen Voyages ship offers three dining venues, plus multiple bars and lounges (drinks are included in your fare).

Like any good expedition ship, Ocean Victory has one lounge dedicated to lectures with large flat screens to view presentations. You'll find an ocean-view fitness center, a small spa and an outdoor pool with two hot tubs.

Ocean Victory's 11- and 12-night Alaska cruises depart between May and September. The ship sails between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Sitka, Alaska. It visits destinations such as Frederick Sound, Endicott Arm, Tracy Arm, the Waterfall Coast (Gut Bay), Misty Fjords National Monument and Fiordland (Kynoch Inlet) in Canada's Inside Passage.

Your fare includes a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay.

In winter, Ocean Victory sails in Antarctica for Albatros Expeditions.

Swan Hellenic: SH Vega

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 152 passengers. Best for: Cruisers looking for unique itineraries including Africa and South America.

Swan Hellenic's compact, well-laid-out SH Vega is built for expedition cruising with a PC5 ice-strengthened hull.

The interior has a contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired low-key design ethos. SH Vega is nearly identical to its younger sister, Minerva. The third, slightly larger sibling Diana is set to debut in May.

When returning from a frigid Antarctica excursion, you will appreciate the fireplaces (yes, that's right) built into the walls of all cabins. They're electric but quite realistic, with flames and crackling sounds.

When the weather's good, skip the main restaurant and eat at the buffet, which is set up at the back of Deck 7, adjacent to the attractive (and heated) infinity swimming pool. Vega also has a small gym and a spa with an ocean-view sauna.

The expansive Observation Lounge takes up most of Deck 7 and is the spot for expedition lectures. Thirteen Zodiacs and eight kayaks take guests on water adventures and ashore.

Don't miss the little observation point called the Swan's Nest all the way forward on Deck 6. You play out your Jack and Rose fantasies there.

SH Vega cruises the Arctic region (visiting Greenland, Iceland and northern Canada), South America, the coast of Africa (including South Africa, Namibia and Angola) and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Cruise fare includes a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay and one excursion in each port.

Viking Cruises: Viking Octantis

small cruise ships in mediterranean

How small? 378 passengers. Best for: Expedition cruisers with an academic bent.

Among the larger ships on our list, Viking 's new 378-passenger Viking Octantis (along with sister Viking Polaris) was designed to explore the polar regions with some pretty cool features, including a large two-level garage called the Hangar.

Inside are not only Zodiacs and kayaks but a pair of six-passenger submarines and military-grade speed used to shuttle cruisers on excursions.

The ship is equipped for scientific inquiry with a remote-controlled underwater robot, baited underwater camera and a FerryBox system for collecting water samples, which you can view under a microscope in the ship's science lab. Weather balloons are released on every cruise to capture info on temperature, humidity and wind speed.

For decidedly less academic pursuits, Viking Octantis has a fitness center and a spa that includes a lovely indoor pool with sea views, plus a sauna, snow grotto (with snowflakes descending gently from the ceiling through chilled air) and outdoor spa tub.

Four dining options include Manfredi's Italian and several attractive lounges, such as the windowed Aula auditorium for lectures.

Viking Octantis spends part of the year in Antarctica and the rest of the year cruising the Great Lakes and Canada, with a handful of repositioning cruises in between.
