I attended a chocolate tour with friends. We learned how chocolate is made and got to sample the current flavors they have for sale. All the staff were friendly, and our tour guide was fantastic. The variety of chocolates they have is astounding. The chocolates made from Hawaii grown cacao tastes slightly different based on the location they were grown in. They also have flavored chocolates (made with non-Hawaii grown cacao) that also tasted great. The chocolate alone was enough for a 5/5 score, but the experience made it a 10/5 score. My friends and I had such a great time with our guide, I don't think any other chocolate tour could compare. If you're looking for chocolate (or a chocolate tour), give theirs a try.

Mānoa chocolate has a diverse selection of delicious, artfully crafted chocolates and wines. They offer free chocolate tastings, where you can taste-test 6 different chocolates with complementary cacao tea to cleanse your palette. The interior is gorgeous -- from the warm lighting to the wood shelving and furniture. Very classy interior. During the chocolate tasting, the blonde woman who helped us was friendly and explained the different chocolate notes and origins while guiding us through taste-testing. We even got to see the cacao plant and taste the fresh cacao beans pre-processing -- it tasted like a small mango seed! They also kindly let us taste other chocolates when we were deciding which ones to purchase My favorite chocolates were: coconut (vegan milk chocolate: uses coconut milk instead of cow milk), breakfast bar (crunchy cacao nibs and coffee bits on top), Kahalu'u, and Maui lavender The sea salt was okay, the sea salt was incorporated into the entire bar instead of just a sprinkle on top. It was quite different from regular sea salt chocolate. Overall, great chocolate and ambiance, friendly staff. When in doubt, ask the staff for recommendations or samplings before purchasing!

It had been years since we visited their little shop in Kailua; I remember it being small but with fun chocolates and try and workshops for a small cost. On a holoholo adventure with family visiting for the first time, one remarked about wanting to try a specific type they made that was out of stock. I then had the idea to go right to the source and didn't expect it had changed so much! It's in the same general area of Kailua, with ample street parking nearby and other shops and restaurants as well. Follow the signs to the factory and wine bar: it's off a small parking lot behind the street. It's a beautiful spot, with lots of wood, a center bar, and wine racks and shelves of all their chocolate and related projects around the walls. On our visit, it was lively with groups and families enjoy wine and flights of chocolate. The staff was immediately welcoming; you can try anything you'd like for free. If you live locally, you can also subscribe to their monthly chocolate service with specialty bars not available otherwise. They have everything, every flavor and type you can imagine; you can buy single bars, boxes, and gift packages which would be perfect for events. They also have a few beers on tap. I was told they're also partnering to make a cacao wine, but otherwise select a diverse variety. If you love chocolate, this is a must visit while on Oahu. They have chocolate bars made with every flavor and fruit you can imagine. Prices are reasonable for the chocolate content and quality.

This place is a dark chocolate lover's paradise! My entire family made a stop here because we all love chocolate and wanted to get some as a souvenir. Parking was easy and they have metered parking. It's a cute shop! Very clean and they have a factory side where you can see some of their work done through the large window. My family and I did their chocolate tasting and it was so much fun and such a great way to try their products. The chocolate is small batch and very high quality. All of the staff members are absolutely amazing - helpful, friendly, and so generous with the samples. They also have a chocolate subscription if you're looking to get their products shipped to the mainland every month and it also comes with some insider perks and discounts. I really loved their dark chocolate. Very high quality and each bar with a unique taste. Their cacao tea blew me away and it was so good, I bought a bag to bring home with me. Overall, such a great experience and a fun little outing to enjoy with the family. Highly recommend making a stop here!

Lovely place to stop on the Windward side. Manoa chocolates is a chocolate lovers paradise! Make sure you are not in a rush when visiting this place. Since we had a group of eight, our chocolate docent ushered us into a nice private room encased in glass and just off to the side of the showroom. Usually sampling done at the chocolate bar in main room. For larger parties it's best to call ahead and let them know you are coming. Customer service tip notch here. Appreciate the knowledge of our chocolate educator. Provided excellent service by Sales Associate Brandon... actually ALL of the Associates here. There are various samplings one can chose from. Since we were a little short on time we went for the basic one. We enjoyed sampling the cacao hot tea (which also acted as a palate cleanser between chocolate samplings, and about 6 different chocolates including two chocolates from Oahu, some from the Big Island of Hawaii, flavored chocolates and even a vegan chocolate! Other optional samplings could include wine pairing, spritzer pairing, and a larger chocolate sampling! There is a chocolate club available to join which affords you 20 percent discount on purchases and a monthly selection of chocolate. I enjoyed our afternoon here and seriously left with way too much chocolate purchased! Hahah. Thank you Manoa Chocolate for the free Thermal shopping bag (free with $50 or more purchase). SIDE NOTE: Only after getting home and unpacking did I realize one of the sampler packs was missing a bar of chocolate. Immediately called back to the store and was assisted by the nicest Associate Jay (?). Explained the situation to him, asked if I could get the missing bar in future or... if there was another better solution. He verified my sale and was so kind to offer me a refund for missing bar instead of having to drive miles back from town. Yes, top notch service! This stop to be added onto my future adventures with visiting friends and family for sure!

Stumbled upon this chocolate store while exploring Oahu. Parking is challenging but make sure you have coins to feed the meter. Cute store, with lots of informative pictures. A nice tasting bar to sample and learn about their chocolate. Also, the have a window where you can see them mixing the chocolate if you catch them at the right time. I highly recommend doing the tasting tour. It's informative, enlightening, and entertaining. They do a good job explaining how they source, produce, their cocoa beans. Picked up a few bars. This is a dark chocolate with lilikoi flavor. Intense, slightly bitter, chocolate with the hint of passionfruit shing through.

If you like chocolate (especially dark chocolate), you don't want to miss out this place! They offer free chocolate tasting of some of their samples at the bar area. If you'd like to taste their full chocolate profile and learn about their making process, they also offer the tasting experience at $35/person. You can book through their website. They also have the chocolate and wine pairing experience package on certain days of the week too. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the chocolate. We tried not only 6 different flavors of chocolate, but also raw cacao~ very fun experience!

We visited Mania Chocolate in November 2023 on our first visit to Hawaii after seeing a tour that two YouTubers took. On our visit, Jess was our Chocolate Tour Guide as she shared the story of several of the chocolates made by this company. She started our tour by letting us crack open a roasted cacao bean and tasting the raw cacao. She also served us small cups of hot cacao tea which was really tasty. The tea is made from the shells of the roasted cacao shells. We tend to prefer darker chocolates and we tried chocolates with many different flavors such as coffee, mango, banana, key lime, strawberry etc. explained what flavors we might taste in each bar. We purchased several chocolate bars to take home with us. This is a very very good chocolate that we will definitely purchase again. We bought the Ko Hana Rum, Niu Coconut, Peanut Butter Banana, Miliani, Goat Milk, Kope Coffee.

Thanks Kai for setting up the room so cozy with the "fireplace" and you showing up in the beanie. Really brought that nice intimate feel and warmth to kick off our tasting pairing. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time w you at Mānoa Chocolate for my brother's birthday. It was such a wonderful experience. We loved all the chocolate and wines but I'm in love w the spritz that kicked us off. I wish I could drink that all day. We tried 4 different chocolates with the 3 wine pairings and we got a chance to try more chocolates in the regular tasting room as we were trying to decide on our purchase. I have fallen in love w the lavender, the Kona and the Mililani. My partner loved the goat milk chocolate and we all loved the Ko Hana Rum chocolate. As we were just at Ko Hana a couple days before to try all their natural rums, made from sugar canes and not from molasses. I'm excited to see you ship so it'll be great to replenish once we ate thru our buy 10 get 2 free. Definitely bring ample coins for the metered parking lot, though not heavily patrolled in the evening, think of it as making a donation to the city. Thank you Kai and the Mānoa experience. We will have to come back for the tour next time, and more wine. Mahalo nui loa, a hui hou!

Ready for some chocolate goodness? You'll leave happy I'm sure. Tucked away in Kailua and next to some yummy eateries such as Ganesh Dosa, Bottleheads, 22Kailua, Cinnamon's. Paid metered parking lot. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place before! We've been here over a dozen times and brought several family/friends here. Everyone always leaves happy and satisfied with their free chocolate tasting and chocolate purchases. We have always been treated kindly by the staff. They also have a wine bar in the evenings now with live music. The deals are awesome! You can buy 6 and get one free, or buy 10 and get 2 free. You also get a complimentary insulated tote bag to store your chocolate which is very nice quality. We still have all our tote bags in near perfect condition. This is our favorite chocolate place on island! You really can't beat the quality of these chocolates. I still haven't done the tour, but maybe in the future! Mahalo!

Manoa Chocolate Tour: Introductions & Learning

333 Uluniu Street, Suite 203 Kailua, HI 96734

Manoa’s factory is located in the small town of Kailua, about 30 minutes away from Honolulu. The parking lot is metered but only accepts coins. However, you can park on the side roads. If you’re lucky, you might be able to snag a spot right by the Kailua Library for free.

The chocolate bars for sale at Manoa Chocolate in Kailua, Hawaii

Upon checking in, a Manoa employee will greet you and your group and walk you through the chocolate-making process. Then they give you samples of all of their different types of chocolate.

Our guide, Kellen, was so sweet and engaging while sharing her knowledge about Manoa’s history.

History of Manoa Chocolate

Manoa Chocolate was started in 2012 by Dylan Butterbaugh, who was born and raised in Hawaii his whole life. As he was graduating from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Sustainable Development, his classmate experimented with cultivating cacao on the islands. Dylan was fascinated and saw the need for bean-to-bar chocolate with only the best cacao. He went all in with Manoa Chocolate, from planting the trees to sourcing beans all around Hawaii and other parts of the world, to investing in machinery to shell, harvest, roast, and morph the cacao into a high-quality bar.

Dylan learned everything he could about the chocolate-making process through YouTube (when there weren’t as many resources at the time). He used a tricycle and a back massager to create a makeshift winnower, a machine that separates the bean’s shells from the cacao nibs inside. The shells are then used to make chocolate tea (which Manoa also sells!). He used a barbeque to roast the beans. This was all before he invested in the manufacturing equipment needed to grow Manoa as a business and pioneer Hawaii’s craft chocolate industry.

Roasted cocoa beans at Manoa Chocolate in Hawaii

During the tour, we learned that Hawaii is the only U.S. state with the climate to cultivate cacao, and the coldest location in the world to do so.

Locations that sit on the equator are best for growing cacao. Hawaii just so happens to sit 20 degrees above the equator.

Craft chocolate vs. commercial chocolate

There is a clear difference between craft chocolate and commercial chocolate. The latter is what we all know as chocolate from Hershey, KitKat, and the other brands you see in grocery stores and gas stations. They are all about the bottom line, using low-quality ingredients to make chocolate in the largest amount of batches with minimal human involvement. Their goal is to produce as much as possible, even at the expense of laborers.

Manoa Chocolate falls under the former. They source their beans directly from farmers in Hawaii and other parts of the world (such as Central and South America, and Tanzania) at high prices. This supports the farmers financially. Manoa also aims to use planting cacao trees as a way to reforest the islands, which benefits Hawaii and its people, creatures, and economy.

Lastly, Manoa Chocolate’s main mission is to make the highest quality, most delicious chocolate possible!

Why the name manoa ?

Manoa is Oahu’s lush valley filled with sugarcane and coffee plantations. It is 3 miles east of Downtown Honolulu and less than a mile from the Waikiki area. It is home to the University of Hawaii at Manoa , the flagship campus of the UH system. Despite this, Manoa Chocolate is located in the Kailua neighborhood, 30 minutes east of Honolulu.

The term manoa means solid, vast, deep . It also stands for taking care of the land that cultivates the cacao. With how much heart and soul Dylan put into Manoa Chocolate, it just makes sense. Especially with how they take ethical and sustainable practices seriously.

RELATED: I love participating in food/drink-related activities when I travel, such as visiting the Starbucks Roastery in Seattle or drinking champagne on the London Eye .

Learning about the bean-to-bar process

During the first part of the tour, Kellen points to a gallery wall of framed photos of the bean, starting off as a flower from the Theobroma Cacao tree to getting harvested and roasted. She shares how the cacao pods grow from the tree trunks and is home to the beans inside. There are an average of 20–40 beans in each pod. The beans are surrounded by white pulp, which is used to make cacao water.

Kellen had us try samples of cacao water, which had a fruity taste with tiny notes of chocolatiness (not sweet like a full-on chocolate bar, if you know what I mean). It was refreshing on a muggy day in Hawaii and has so many antioxidants and electrolytes to keep you healthy and hydrated.

We also sampled cocoa nibs fresh from the shell’s bean, by cracking them like peanuts (or manually winnowing them with our fingers).

Eventually, we got to observe the chocolate-making process through the windows. After roasting the beans, they go through winnowing , separating the nibs from the shell. After that, they go through refining and grinding , which they are made into a paste and when sugar gets added to the mix. Then they go through tempering , which heats and then cools the chocolate to the perfect temperature for the best consistency. Finally, the chocolate is ready for the molding process, which removes air bubbles and transforms it into a solid bar.

Manoa Chocolate Tour: Tasting all the bars

Now comes the fun part—tasting all of Manoa’s bars!

We were given the packaging of all of Manoa’s bars on the table along with a tasting wheel labeled with different flavor notes. Kellen served us chocolate tea to cleanse our palate between tasting each sample.

Manoa has three chocolate bar collections:

  • Hawaiian Grown Cacao Collection: Made with beans grown from different parts of Oahu (Mililani, Ko’olaupoko, Waiahole, Waimanalo) and Big Island (Kona and Kealakekua). There are also three bars in this collection that have added flavor in each, such as lavender, goat milk, and regular milk to make it less dark and more Belgium/Swiss style.
  • Alcohol collection: There are two bars in this collection, one of which is infused with KōHana Rum, and the other with Old Pali Road Whiskey.
  • Flavors of Hawaii: Chocolates infused with and inspired by Hawaiian fare. Flavors include mango, banana, haupia coconut, sea salt, coffee, and liliko’i (passionfruit). The packaging is colorful, fun, and illustrated by Punky Aloha Studio .

Manoa Chocolate tour and tasting different sample chocolates

Analyzing the flavors

As we were tasting each piece of chocolate, we had to guess which notes were inside. We all agreed that most of the Hawaiian Grown Cacao bars had fruity notes. It turns out that the Waimalano bar had hints of green apple while Kealakekua bar had a bit of strawberry. The Mililani bar had cherry, passionfruit, AND raspberry.

My favorite bar was the one with goat milk because it had that savory bite that almost tasted like a creamy cheesecake. Cecilio loved the lavender bar; he said that he could actually taste the lavender, unlike in other products that claim to have it but end up being too mild. The lavenders were sourced from Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm in Maui.

I especially loved the rum bar. But the whiskey bar? I could take it or leave it.

As far as the Flavors of Hawaii collection, I had a hard time deciding…but I would have to say that I loved the mango and coffee bars.

Kellen had one more treat for us: she had two white chocolate bars from their tea collection (which is no longer sold online, it’s in-store only). They were chai latte and matcha flavored, and were sold as tiny squares in plastic wrap. I loved both, especially the chai latte bar as it tasted autumnal!

How YOU can try Manoa Chocolate

If you decide to visit the Oahu island in Hawaii, you’ve got to take a day trip to Kailua to do the Manoa Chocolate Tour & Tasting. You have to make reservations in advance , and the tours are operated everyday at 2 pm. They are about 60–90 minutes long.

You can also visit Manoa Chocolate as a part of a guided tour. GetYourGuide has two tours below which include a trip to Manoa.

Not heading out to Hawaii anytime soon? Don’t worry! You can purchase the chocolates on their website individually or as a set. They also sell chocolate-powdered macadamia nuts, chocolate tea, drinking cocoa, and macadamia spread (think Nutella, but with macadamia nuts instead of hazelnuts).

Manoa also offers a $35 monthly subscription box, consisting of three bars. It may be worth looking into, especially if you like surprises 🙂

insulated bag of Manoa chocolate featuring 7 chocolate bars and a straw hat

I understand that at $10–$12 a bar, Manoa Chocolate is on the pricier side. But by supporting them, you are helping them pay farmers fair wages and you get to be a part of their efforts to reforest the Hawaiian islands through cacao. Plus, they are just so freaking delicious, and are amazing gifts for your family and friends!

Have you ever heard of Manoa Chocolate or the craft chocolate movement?

Chocolate tours, tasting, wine bar and live music

We stopped in around 3pm on a Thursday and asked about the chocolate tastings. They offer an in depth full tour and tasting in the mornings (register online) for $25/person but also offer the abbreviated tasting without reservations at no cost and without pressure to buy. There were four others at the time we sat down for our tasting and the presentation was well organized, quite casual and fun. We were given a nice history and each of the chocolates we tasted was explained. We enjoyed every sample we tasted and they were all quite different depending on the region grown or the flavoring added. We were asked if there were any we hadn’t sampled which we would like to try as well. We sampled the specialties… lavender, ghost pepper, and sun flower, a few of the regional chocolates and a few of the chocolates with added flavoring. We also had chocolate tea. When completed (about 20 minutes) we chose to buy chocolate to be shipped home. With $40 purchased, shipping was free, and they were running a special that day - buy 6 bars and the 7th is free; buy 10 bars and get two more free. Everyone working was pleasant and so helpful, making the experience perfect. We asked about the wine and chocolate pairings - reservations are required, for $50/person you are walked through chocolates and perfect wine pairings (only Wednesday evenings). After 5pm the location turns into a wine bar some evenings and they offer a wine menu, beer, cocktails, and charcuterie tray or chocolate with live music. Check the schedule on the web site. This was an amazing stop our hosts told us about and we were so glad we stopped in for the chocolate tasting. We hope to make it back another evening during our stay to visit the wine bar and enjoy the live music and wine.

This was an unexpected stop that we really enjoyed and of course we bought some chocolate home to remind us of how yummy their chocolate was!

Mahalo nui loa for your kind words about not just my service, but your experience in our tasting room as a whole. We hope to welcome you back the next time that you make it to Hawai'i!

We paid for the 60-90 min in-depth tasting and had an absolute blast with Isabel. She went through all the different chocolates and explained where they were from how they were made and the farms that they came from. Isabel was a lot of fun and really made the experience for us!

manoa chocolate tour

Mahalo nui loa for your kind words about your experience here in our tasting room. I shared your remarks with Izzy and she so appreciates them. We do our best every day to make our guests' experiences both positive and informative; we couldn't be happier to hear that this was your experience here. See you again soon!

I went to visit friends in Hawaii and stayed in Kailua. We went to the Manoa Chocolate Factory for a free (yup!) tasting. I was initially hesitant as they pretty much make a lot of dark chocolate and I hate dark chocolate. It never has any taste. This was very different! By the end of the tasting session, you've essentially eaten an entire chocolate bar - just different flavors. And this dark chocolate TASTES GREAT. I especially liked the one with the raspberry flavor in the background. Nice explanations of how the farms work and that they try to stick to local flavors. It lasted probably about 20 minutes and again - it was free. I bought a bunch of chocolate for friends and they all love me now. Go there. Smack in the middle of downtown Kailua.

Dark chocolate can INDEED taste great! One of the best parts of our job here at Mānoa is seeing people's feelings about dark chocolate transform from skepticism - or even disgust - to joy and surprise as they taste what dark chocolate made with beautiful, ethically-sourced cacao can taste like. We are happy to hear that this is your experience as well. No longer can you say that you hate dark chocolate - and that makes us happy! A hui hou - until we meet again.

My husband and I booked this tour as we wanted a smaller and intimate compared a large circle Island tour. Jose was an excellent guide and taught us a lot about Hawaiian culture and history of the islands. He really ga ... ve us an authentic experience. My husband loved hearing about how Jose spearfished and hunted and shared his catches with friends and family as is Hawaiian tradition. Jose went out of his way to bring us to extra lookouts outside of what this tour package included and wanted to give us the best experience of Hawaii. We loved seeing the lookouts on the south and in the mountains that gave us a spectacular views of Oahu. It gave us a good taste of everything so we could spend more time in each location like Kualoa Ranch in the future if we wanted to to. He also showed what a caring guide he was as we had a pregnant lady in our tour group, always checking up on her wellbeing and being considerate to check if any stops were needed for her.

Once your selection is confirmed, our store will take care of the delivery, whether your contacts, loved ones, or family live in Moscow , Saint Petersburg , Novosibirsk , Yekaterinburg , or Kazan  !

The Russian craze to make up for lost time!

Just like China , Russia wasn't a great consumer of chocolate until the turn of the 21st century. The land of the Tsars is now catching up at full speed, since Russians consume an average of 6 kg of chocolate each year. The outlook is positive because the annual increase is planned to be 0.8%. This growing market should increase by 45% between 2014 and 2017, with revenues approaching 6 billion euros. The progress of artisan chocolate compared to industrial chocolate is also a dedicated process.

Chocolate and Russia: what a history

While changing their eating habits to chocolate, Russia has also developed a strong production system at the same time. The largest Russian chocolate brands are Krasniy Octyabr, a company founded in 1966, Konditersky Kontsern Babaevsky, established in 1804, and Rot Front, a candy maker that has been around since 1826. Chocolate makers are also increasing with the opening of small artisanal stores throughout the country, creating a passion for quality chocolate and developing the Russian palate for more subtle flavors.

Chocolate, a stylish gift

From Christmas to Easter celebrations , as well as birthdays , weddings or Valentine's Day , any occasion is good for giving chocolate. To such an extent that chocolate has become the best-selling treat. Russians also like to buy chocolate bars to eat alone or to add to delicious pastries. So if you have acquaintances in Russia , or if you're going to be there for an extended stay, think about Planète Chocolat , your online store that guarantees delivery of exceptional Belgian chocolates wherever you find yourself.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
