Welcome To Melghat

Melghat tiger reserve is located in the Amaravati district of Maharashtra. Melghat Tiger Reserve is located on the southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range in Central India, called Gavilgarh Hill. It is 225 km west of Nagpur. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1967, and was declared a tiger reserve in 1974. It was among the first nine tiger reserves notified in 1973-74 under Project Tiger, a wildlife conservation project initiated in India in 1972 to protect Bengal tigers. It was the first tiger reserve of Maharashtra. It is still one of the biggest tiger reserves in the country in terms of area. The name 'Melghat' means the confluence of various 'ghats' or valleys as is typical from the landscape of this tiger Reserve.

Apart from Tigers the other prominent animals are Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Sambar deer, Leopard, Nilgais, etc. The endangered and 'back from extinction' Forest Owlet is also found in various areas of Melghat.

Tourism in Melghat is distributed along 4 centers/villages. Semadoh, Chikhaldara, Harisal & Shahnur. There are some additional stay facilities at Kolkas which is 14km ahead of Semadoh.

The nearest railway station to reach Chikhaldara, Semadoh, Kolkas, Harisal in Amravati. Shahnur is closest to Akola. The nearest airport is at Nagpur some 250 kms away.

Tourists can explore Melghat in all seasons but the monsoons starting mid July till end of September offers the best views. The winters are cold with night temperature dropping below 5 degrees. The summers are good for animal sightings.

Accommodation facilities in Melghat are mostly run by forest department except the hotels and resorts at Chikhaldara which are operated by private. Facilities are comfortable and basic in nature suiting the forest atmosphere where it is located.

The area shown below in the table of Melghat, Wan and Ambabrwa sanctuaries includes non forest area also but in the notification issued for the respective sanctuaries, the non forest area is excluded. The Melghat, nestling in the Satpuda hill ranges of Forsyth’s and Dunbar’s Central India’s vast tracts of inviolate natural forests, consisting of unique and representative ecosystems with rich biodiversity and varied habitats offered by deep valleys (locally known as khoras) and high hills (locally known as Ballas), daunted with rivers and nallahs having water all the year round in the ‘doh’, was the natural choice for the community of foresters in Maharashtra, when it came to choose an area for preserving it for posterity and for ensuring that the ‘Tiger’ the most magnificent and flagship of the Indian wild species.

Rules & Regulation

Please follow the rules and regulation as per the wildlife protection act 1972 to avoid impose punishment for violating the same. The schedules give absolute protection to certain species and these cannot be infringed on any account.Offences related to trade and commerce in trophies, animals articles etc. Derived from certain animals attracts a term of imprisonment up to three years and/or a fine up to Rs. 25,000/-.

Melghat Tiger Reserve offers various activities like day safari, Full day Safari, Night Machaan Stay, Kayaking, Elephant ride, Trekking, Adventure activities like zorbi ball, Burma bridge, River crossing, Parallel bridge and many more. These various activities are available at tourist destination like Aamzari, Semadoh, Kolkas, Harisal, Shahanur. The tribal dance show can be arranged on request. Home stay facility is also provided to experience the culture & day to day life style of tribal.

Indian Bull Frog

Hoplobatrachus tigerinus. It is also known as Indus Valley Bull frog.It is a large species of frog found in India. They inhabit holes and bushes near permanent water sources.the frog does not stay in water for a long time;it spends most of its time and feeding in surrounding vegetation.

Lion Tailed Macaque

It is a medium to sized macaque of southern india Lion-tailed macaques are found in dense forests along the western Ghats. The call of this monkey is like a human and sounds like 'Coyeh' or a coo.

Snow Leopard

Snow leopards can't roar. Snow leopards are found at atitudes between 3000 and 5,200 meters (9,800 and 17,000 feet) in the high, rugged mountains of Central Asia including the himalayan mountains. Snow leopards can kill prey weighing as three times their own body weight. Cubs are born blind and don't gain their sight until they're nine days old. Snow Leopards are an endangered species.

(Tyto alba) Barn Owls can see an object at 2 meters with an illumination of 0.00000073 foot candlles. This is equivalent to a person seeing an object by the light of a match a mile way.They have also super sensitive heaieing.They usually hunt at night.

Melghat Tiger Reserve is located on southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range in Central India, called Gavilgarh hill in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The high ridge running east-west which has its highest point at Vairat (1178 m. above msl.), forms the southwestern boundary of the Reserve. It is a prime habitat of the tiger. The forest is tropical dry deciduous in nature, dominated by teak Tectona grandis.  The Reserve is a catchment area for five major rivers viz. Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, all of which are tributaries of the river Tapti. The northeastern boundary of the Reserve is marked by the Tapti river. Melghat is the prime biodiversity repository of the state. The sudden slope of Melghat form the part of catchment of river Purna. The three major tributaries originating from Melghat region and draining into river Purna are Chandrabhaga, adnani and wan. Chikhaldara is located on high sudden platau at an altitude of 1100 ms. above MSL. Nature has offered protection to Melghat in the form of a rugged topography with only a few entry points. The Makhala, Chikhaldara, Chiladari, Patulda and Gugamal are the large plateaux amidst rugged terrain. Contiguity of forests in Satpura Hill Range guarantees the long-term conservation potential of the area. Conservation History : Melghat area was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1974. Presently, the total area of the Reserve is around 1677 sq. km. The core area of the Reserve, the Gugarnal National Park with an area of 361.28 sq. km., and buffer area of the Reserve, the Melghat Tiger Sanctuary with an area of 788.28 sq. km. (of which 21.39 sq. km. is non-forest), were together re-notified by the state government in 1994 as Melghat Sanctuary. The remaining area is managed as a ‘multiple use area’. Previously, Melghat Tiger Sanctuary was created in 1985 with an area of 1597.23 sq. km.  Gugarnal National Park was carved out of this Sanctuary in 1987. Archaeological Richness : The Gavilgarh fort on the Chikhaldara plateau and Narnala fort abetting southeastern part of Melghat Tiger Reserve add to the aesthetic value of the area. Visitors to these archaeological monuments enjoy the serene forests in the backdrop.

Semadohis a village located in dense Melghat Tiger Reserve in Dharni Tahsil, Amravati District, Maharashtra.Near Semadoh on the banks of Sipna River is a Forest Jungle camp consisting of four Dormitories (60 Bed) and Ten cottages (20 bed). The cottages have been recently renovated and are in good condition. There is a museum next to cafeteria (mess). Most important is presence of wild life in the area like Tigers, Sloth bear, leopards and other jungle animals. Bookings can be done though Forest Department Amravati.

How to Reach Melghat Tiger Project

Melghat is approachable by Road, Rail and Air (nearest airport- Nagpur). Semadoh is the main centre from tourist point of view. Kolkas eco- tourism complex is situated Narnala Sanctuary (base camp – Shahnur in Akot district) is another tourist centre of the Melghat Tiger Reserve where you can enjoy Jungle Safari as well as visit a fortress built probably 600 years.

Harisal is a digital village located 25kms from Semadoh towards Indore on Maharashtra State Highway no. 6.

Chikhaldara is a hill station and a famous tourist place in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and another important gateway to Melghat Tiger Reserve. It has many private owned hotels & resorts and has a jungle safari gate commonly known as Vairat.

How do you reach these destinations?

For Chikhaldara/Semadoh/Kolkas/ Harisal- Alight at Badnera Junction (10Km) from Amravati on Mumbai – Nagpur – Kolkata route.

Nearest airport is Nagpur which is connected by daily flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Raipur, Indore, Pune, etc.

Nagpur to Amaravati (160 km). Amravati to Paratwada (50 km.). Paratwada to Semadoh (45 km.)

Situated 13kms further from Semadoh towards Harisal on state highway no. 6 is the famous Kolkas Eco Tourism centre. It has 7 cottages (twin sharing), 2 nos. Forest Rest house rooms, 18 beds dormitory run by the Forest Department.

Vairat/Chikhaldara-

Vairat Jungle Safari- Along with many scenic points and Gavilgadh fort Chikhaldara has a jungle safari access on the Vairat plateau which is arguably one of the highest points in Central India for any jungle safari. Safaris can be booked online or on spot at the Nature Interpretation Centre based right in the heart of Chikhaldara town.  Amravati to Paratwada (50 km.). Paratwada to Chikhaldara (32 km.).

Harisal village is on Maharashtra State Highway no.6 and is a gateway to jungle safaris from Harisal gate, night safari activities, full day tourism activities, machaan activities and adventure activities.

Nagpur to Amaravati (160 km). Amravati to Paratwada (50 km.). Paratwada to Semadoh (45 km.). Semadoh to Harisal (25 km).
