One of two gay hotels in Mykonos, the Elysium is the place to see and be seen. There’s a stunning terrace space where you can sip a cool drink and enjoy the view, decadent interiors and, if that isn’t relaxing enough, a spa.

We love how big it is, so there’s always something new to explore here: you’ll never get bored! The view will take your breath away (as will some of the contemporary artwork on the walls!). You can read our full write-up of the  Elysium Gay Hotel in Mykonos here.

Unlike the Elysium, Mykonos’ other gay hotel is quieter and a bit further away from the action, so great if you’d prefer a bit more privacy. It’s also aimed specifically at gay travelers, so you’ll get a warm welcome (without so many wild parties!). The rooms are modern and clean; some even have a kitchen unit so you can self-cater to get that extra alone time. The swimming pool area is chilled and attractive.

Speaking of privacy, if that is what you like about your holiday destination, then these are the apartments for you. These self-catered studios are great if you’re traveling with your significant other and want a space for the two of you to relax in after a hard day’s sunbathing. You’re also close to the action when you want to head out for the night.

Enjoy complete luxury at the beautiful Harmony Boutique Hotel, which has a fully-equipped spa in addition to its traditional Mediterranean restaurant. The breakfast is pretty spectacular as well! It’s right next to the old port, so you have panoramic views of the sea from your balcony.

Despite the name, this is not one of the exclusively gay hotels in Mykonos, but it is extremely gay-friendly and an ideal option for travelers on more of a budget. Its whitewashed walls and bright blue shutters look fresh against the Greek sky. You’re right on the beach, and there’s a cozy lounge area to relax in when you need to get out of the sun.

If you’re planning a romantic holiday for two, you can’t go wrong with Kouros Hotel and Suites. Each room has a private terrace where you can chill in the sun before heading out to enjoy the nightlife. Huge amounts of care have been taken to ensure stylish and elegant rooms – plenty of interior inspiration here! If you can drag yourself away, the amazing Mykonos nightlife is only moments away.

How to Get to Mykonos

Our time in Mykonos capped off 10 days of Greek island hopping . We flew into Athens, took a ferry to Sifnos , then moved on to Santorini before reaching Mykonos.

We traveled by ferry between islands and booked our high-speed fares with Bookaway. It made it easy to have access to all the fares in one online search tool and be able to pull them up again with ease. It was our first time using them and we’ve gone back to them for train tickets since.

>>>  Book Ferries to Mykonos with Bookaway HERE <<<

When it was time to leave Mykonos we flew back to Athens. After spending one day in Athens , we flew home to Copenhagen. All of our airfare was booked through Skyscanner because we always find the best deals within Europe on their site.

>>> Book Flights to Mykonos, Athens or elsewhere with SkyScanner HERE <<<

The best place for a gay traveler in Mykonos to stay is in the main town of Chora or “Mykonos Town”. It’s a quintessentially Cycladic town with narrow, winding, stone streets and whitewashed buildings with blue trim.

It’s the perfect area of the island to stay in because you’ll probably end your evenings there with the restaurants and bars of Mykonos Town. We always recommend booking accommodation near a destination’s nightlife. At the end of the evening, you’ll be happy for the short walk home.

Taxis can be difficult to come by on Mykonos – even more reason to stay near the nightlife. You can take the bus or drive to the beaches during the day and it will be easier to arrange during the day.

Gay Mykonos Hotels

Mykonos has been attracting tourists for decades, so there are hotels all over the island. In Mykonos Town, supply doesn’t meet the demand at all times of the year, so be prepared to pay a premium for the summer months. This is especially true in August where gay travelers swarm the island.

Here are our recommended gay hotels in Mykonos showcasing a range of star-ratings:

If you’re traveling with a group, a Gay Mykonos Airbnb is a perfect option. Even for couples, you can find romantic lodging for two with more privacy. If you book early you can find great deals on a Mykonos Airbnb.

Gay Beaches in Mykonos

Mykonos is defined by powdery sand beaches and turquoise waters lapping the shores. The beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world, and you can’t visit with at least one Mykonos gay beach day.

There are three main gay beaches in Mykonos, Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, and Elia Beach. Here’s a quick comparison of each one with directions.

elia beach mykonos greek island hopping itinerary

Elia Beach is one of the largest and gayest beaches in Mykonos. Upon arrival, head to the waterfront and walk to the right, there you’ll eventually find a rainbow flag and the gay section of the beach. It’s lined with rows of sun beds and umbrellas which are serviced for drinks.

It takes about 25 minutes to drive to Elia Beach and you can also get there by bus from the old port in Mykonos Town.

Parago Beach

Parago Beach is adjacent to Paradise Beach, which was actually the gay beach in the 1970s when the island first became a gay destination. These days, Paradise Beach is mostly inhabited by partying straight beachgoers, so the gays have relocated to Parago Beach, just up the cliff.

It’s a small beach but full of sunbeds and a bar with music. There’s not a lot of privacy, but it’s popular with nudists.

Super Paradise Beach

Years ago Super Paradise Beach was exclusively gay, but it’s quite mixed these days and even attracts families. Head to Elia Beach if you want a true gay beach experience. There’s no nudity on Super Paradise Beach, but you will find music and a party atmosphere.

When you arrive, walk to the waterfront and head right, you’ll find the gayest section of the beach adjacent to Jackie O’s Beach Club. In the opposite direction, you’ll find Super Paradise Beach Club which is crowded from 4 pm on.

Definitely head to Jackie O’s Beach Club at least once during your time in gay Mykonos. The beach club has the same owners as the bar in Mykonos Town and it’s got a large bar and restaurant area with a pool, and jacuzzi. They have DJs and drag performers, are open until 1 am and busy every day of the season.

Agrari Beach

Adjacent to Elia Beach and beyond a rocky outcrop, you’ll find Agrari Beach. It’s popular with nude gay beachgoers and a little quieter than Elia Beach itself. There are sunbeds and umbrellas, but many at Agari opt for beach blankets and towels on the sand.

Besides the gorgeous Cycladic homes, turquoise waters, and golden beaches, the Mykonos nightlife scene is a key part of your gaycation. The evening festivities kick off a little later in Mykonos and can stretch way into the early morning (even through sunrise), so plan accordingly. A disco nap between the beach and happy hour is always smart.

mykonos lgbt travel

Jackie O's

You will undoubtedly spend some time at the most famous bar in Mykonos, Jackie O’s. It’s located near the cruising spot on the Paraportiani waterfront with a scenic ocean terrace. It’s where practically everyone ends their evening, so Jackie O’s is often packed by late evening.

Drinks at Jackie O’s can be pricey, even for Mykonos standards. It’s basically a popularity premium, but it covers the sexy staff and drag performances that you can enjoy while there.

Located adjacent to Jackie O’s on the Paraportiani waterfront is the trendy bar, Babylon. Like its neighbor, there is an outdoor terrace with lounge seating and indoor space to spread out. Babylon also fills up a little earlier and you can expect a large crowd by midnight. Their drinks are a bit cheaper than next-door, but you’ll probably still bounce back and forth.

LOLA is a classic gay cocktail lounger, complete with portraits of Hollywood starlets and eclectic items and design features. You’ll love the laid back vibe and kitschy environment at LOLA. It’s our favorite spot to pop in after dinner as the start of our night out.

Katerina's

Katerina’s is a sea-facing cocktail bar and restaurant that oozes charm. It’s a bit pricey due to the location along Little Venice, but you have to stop there for at least one drink while in Mykonos. The food at Katerina’s is tasty, especially the seafood dishes.

elysium gay mykonos sunset mykonos

Elysium Hotel hosts the absolute BEST sunset happy hour and drag show on the island. It’s an experience that you simply must have during your time on Mykonos. I don’t just recommend it because I’ve participated – it’s truly entertaining and includes a crazy-talented cast.

Arrive at least an hour before sunset so that you can enjoy drinks around the pool and mingle before showtime. The pool deck is always packed with a fun crowd to chat up and the views cannot be beaten.

If you want to dance and be seen, head to @54. The name is a nod to New York City’s famous disco, Studio 54. It shares the same carefree, anything-goes vibe but it’s quintessential gay Mykonos at the same time.

The atmosphere is phenomenal, the staff is warm and friendly and there’s an outside terrace. It’s located near Taxi (Manto) Square and opens seasonally, so enjoy @54 in the summer months.

There are a lot of great places to eat in Mykonos but here are two of our favorites.

restaurants Mykonos

NiKo's Taverna

( website ) For local Greek cuisine and fresh seafood, Niko’s Taverna is the perfect stop. We love to eat there because it’s close to the gay bars and super authentic. The saganaki was incredible (and we ordered it at almost every meal for 10 whole days).

Nice n Easy Organic Bistro

( website ) Nice n Easy serves delicious food, especially seafood, on their waterfront patio with lovely ocean views. It’s located on Alefkandra Square and is perfect to dine and watch the sunset. Make a reservation, because tables fill up quickly, but even if you have to wait – it’s worth it!

Things To Do in Mykonos

While the beaches, bars, drag shows, and delicious Greek men… er, food… will keep you busy – here are some great activities to fill your agenda to the brim.

Top Activities

Top group activities, gay mykonos travel tips.

Here are some quick travel tips to keep in mind during your trip to Greece.

Do You Tip in Greece?

You should tip 5 – 10% in Greece but in some tourist zones (like Mykonos) gratuity can be added or rounded up on your bill. Check this first! If it’s not included, leave the tip on the table or tell the waiter to keep the change when paying in cash. With a card payment, you may have to tell the waiter what amount you’d like to pay before they run the card through.

Travel Insurance

World Nomads is our ONLY source for travel insurance. Not to nag – but it’s important to travel with insurance these days. Considering the small cost you pay, it’s worth the peace of mind. Illness, flight cancellations and other emergencies come up all the time. If you get sick or having to change your travel plans it’s crucial to be covered.

Mykonos Sightseeing

When we book excursions, tours, museums, or attractions we always use GetYourGuide. The reasons why are simple: online booking, immediate confirmation, receiving tickets online through electronic vouchers, and skipping the lines.

The tours above are all available through GYG, and you can search all their options in Mykonos HERE.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Gay Mykonos

You don’t need any gay guide to tell you, but the most crowded months in Mykonos are July and August. For a more quiet experience, the months of May and September give you great weather and fewer crowds. August is of course the busiest month for gay travel to Mykonos.

Mykonos Gay Tourism

Mykonos as an LGBTQ+ destination in the Cyclades : Over the last few decades, Mykonos has carved out a niche for itself as a much sought-after gay tourist destination. During the 1960s , former US First Lady Jackie Onassis visited the island. Visits by Grace Kelly , Sophia Loren , and Brigitte Bardot came next. In the 1970s , Italian-American painter Pierro Aversa and fisherman Andreas Koutsoukos established " Pierro's ", the first LGBTQ+-friendly bar . The island comprises a destination for gay individuals ever since. Today, it attracts millions of gay tourists who seek refuge in the island's breathtaking natural panorama and warm and hospitable people.

Mykonos has built an enviable reputation as an LGBTQ+ bastion. The international gay community began to pour in at the island during the 1970s as a place where they could find some respite from the world's stereotyped views on homosexuality. The best thing about Mykonos is that, despite the burgeoning growth of mass tourism, which also includes LGBTQ+ tourism, much of the island's landscape has remained unscathed by the invasion of modernity and its associated evils of sky-high apartments and hotels.

In many ways, Chora has been impeccably preserved and looks more like an 18th-century village than a modern-day metropolis. The only noticeable changes are the entrances to the shops and the renovated old buildings that now host accommodations, restaurants, and shops. Many find the contrast amazing, given the fact that nothing much has changed in Mykonos' landscape by way of modernity. The Town floods with gay tourists who find the neighborhood as a kind of safe haven . A unique feature of Mykonos is that as a tourist destination, there are very few taboos here. The islanders are pretty open and transparent and have fewer inhibitions as far as sexual preferences are concerned. No wonder, with its flexible outlook, Mykonos attracts millions of LGBTQ+ tourists from all over the world.

In Mykonos, you will find many visitors who have come here for the same reason as you. The island is not arrogant at all, which is what many prospective tourists would like to believe even before landing on the island. Its cosmopolitan air is very infectious and life is one big celebration. There are numerous high-quality bars and restaurants , but the most invigorating ones are the expensive ones located along the seafront.

As dusk descends on the island, it is clubbing time for the LGBTQ+ community as it is for everyone else. The best place to begin a Mykonos-by-night tour is from the watery neighborhood of Little Venice . That area is vibrant and buzzing with activity. Some of the best bars, restaurants, and discotheques are located here, and party animals are known to jive well past midnight. So make hay when the sun shines.

Last but not least, the island annually hosts the XLSIOR Festival , one of the top summer gay festivals worldwide and a unique holiday experience.

The clubs that are located at Super Paradise and Paradise beaches also host major events and are frequented by the LGBTQ+ community. Jackie O' Bar in Town and Jackie O' Seaside in Super Paradise beach are maybe the most famous gay bars on the island.

LGBTQ+ Hotels

The burgeoning growth of gay tourism has brought a sea change in the attitude of the booming hospitality sector of Mykonos. Instead of looking down upon gay tourists, the quintessential hoteliers have been quick to adapt themselves and, as a result, almost all hotels in Mykonos are LGBTQ+ -friendly. That is a lovely gesture and is hugely appreciated by the international LGBTQ+ community. Regarding recommendations, Mykonos is home to Elysium , which is an exclusively gay hotel located in the main town. Other gay-friendly accommodation options include Theoxenia Boutique Hotel , Kouros Hotel & Suites , and Andronikos Hotel . See more hotels .

LGBTQ+ Beaches

Like the hotel industry, the beaches became LGBTQ+-friendly. Among the most popular LGBTQ+-friendly beaches are Super Paradise , Paradise and Elia . Elia beach is easily accessible by hired cabs or motorbikes. There is even a regular bus service linking Elia Beach to Town.

Music ranges from techno and hip-hop to house and the food in the numerous beachside bars is exotic and tasty. However, if you prefer isolation and seclusion, you would do well to venture to some of the lesser-known beaches, like Lia and Panormos .

Mykonos, with its exhilarating mix of climate, landscape, legends, and folklore together, casts an irresistible spell that will forever captivate you!

Part of the group of Greek Islands named the Cyclades, Mykonos is one of the most famous gay destinations in the world, and a favourite hotspot for many celebrities, gaining the nickname ‘The Capri of Greece’.

Our partners at HotelREZ Hotels & Resorts have created a handy mini travel e-Guide to the island. Full of helpful tips, including the best places to party or where to catch that perfect tan, this is a handy guide for anyone thinking of visiting Mykonos. We break down some of those essentials here, but for the full story feel free to download their free Mykonos guide .

Hit the Beach

LGBT Travel tips_Mykonos - Elia Beach_World Rainbow Hotels

A magnificent stretch of coastline, Elia Beach is one of the longest beaches in Mykonos, but also one of the busiest. Particularly popular with the gay crowd, there are several places to eat, drink or relax out of the summer sun, and amenities such as umbrellas and sun beds for rent can be easily found. The left side of the beach is more of a mix of people, whereas the right side is mostly clothing-optional and preferred by LGBTQ+ tourists.

Watch the Sunset

LGBT Travel tips_Mykonos - Little Venice_World Rainbow Hotels

Little Venice or Mikri Venetia, offers one of the most romantic settings on the island. In this peculiar neighbourhood, rows of medieval two and three storey houses line the waterfront with their wooden balconies hanging over the sea. The houses, originally belonging to rich merchants or captains, have little basement doors which provided direct access to the sea and underground storage areas, leading many to believe that its owners might have been pirates. Many have now been converted into quirky bars and cafes, shops and art galleries.

Tip: Sit back and relax while watching the sunset on the seashore, and sipping a cocktail at one of the many bars in the area.

Party the Night Away

LGBT Travel tips_Mykonos-Club at54_World Rainbow Hotels

One of the newest clubs in Mykonos, @54 Lounge & Discotheque  is the hottest place in town to dance the night away. You can expect exclusive weekly parties full of the most glamorous jet setting crowd, deliciously mixed special cocktails, and a breath taking terrace where you can enjoy sipping champagne while taking in the gorgeous Mykonos views. During the day you can head to Pump @54, a gym and personal training fitness centre offering daily, weekly and monthly memberships.

About Mykonos and its gay life

Mykonos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea and part of the Cyclades island group. In the summer months, the island's population of about ten thousand is joined by many sun-seeking beach holidaymakers who come to the – now quite expensive – island by ferry or plane.

The island's capital, Mykonos Town (also called ›Chora‹), located on the west coast, is particularly fascinating for its architecture typical of the Cyclades: white houses with flat roofs, decorated balconies and colored windows and wooden doors. Other landmarks of the capital as well as the island are the old windmills ›Kato Mili‹, the ›Panagia Paraportiani‹ church and the picturesque quarter ›Little Venice‹ at the waterfront.

For decades, Mykonos has also been a popular vacation destination for gays and is known for its outstanding LGBT-friendliness. Fans of Ralf König will remember his comic book Super Paradise from 1999. An annual highlight on Mykonos is the big international gay party festival XLSIOR in August.

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

So you’ve heard about Mykonos and the wild parties , you’ve dreamt about strolling through Santorini side-streets holding hands , and imagined sitting on a beach under the stars cocktail in hand listening to the sound of the waves… together in Greece.

Mykonos may have won over the gay crowds in the ’70s onwards, but LGBT travelers to Greece now have a wide range of gay-friendly destinations to choose from.

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

Whether you’re the intellectual type, the art lover or the beach bum, Greece is among the  most welcoming gay-friendly countries in Europe,  and is slowly but steadily evolving into a community of openness and inclusion .

There’s no doubt about it, tourism has played a major role over the decades in changing attitudes and fostering acceptance . Civil unions with some (not all) rights and protections were legalized for same-sex couples in 2015; two years later, transgender people were granted the right to change their legal gender without having to undergo surgical alteration; and in 2018, a law allowed same-sex couples the right to foster care children.

So yes, many Greek same-sex couples live openly and publicly and happily among family, friends and colleagues in a society that is taking step – albeit baby steps  – towards gay liberation .

►  5 + 1 Reasons to Visit Greece ASAP

🌈 On February 15, 2024, Greece legalized same-sex marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples. The Greek LGBTQ community welcomed the landmark decision , which marks a historic moment for the country’s human rights . Greece is the 16 th  country in the European Union to legalize same-sex unions and the first Orthodox nation to do so.

Q&A: LGBT Travel to Greece

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

1. Is Greece a Good Choice for Gay Travelers?

Absolutely. Though some people still appear to be surprised when snuggling or kissing in public is involved, for the most part Greeks won’t really care what you do in your bed and your life, as long as you spare them the details.

The determining factor that makes Greece a great place to visit with your partner or spouse is its age-old hospitality.

Yes, here too the  powerful tradition of Greek hospitality  or “ philoxenia ” – ingrained in the majority of Greeks – will conquer and surpass any latent narrow-mindedness, which was probably more common among older folks or in isolated areas.

2. Is Greece safe for LGBT travelers?

Greece is among the safest countries in Europe , and among the most popular destinations for LGBT travelers. This said, I should add however, that as is the case when traveling anywhere else in the world,  much of our experience depends on our own responsibility.  Which means that we should always practice common sense . And this rule applies to all travelers. As for Greek islands and villages, due to tourism, the majority of Greek destinations are open and welcoming.

3. Can I walk around holding hands with my partner?

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

Of course you can. Especially in the popular tourist areas or on the islands. But be prepared to come across   some people, mostly older generations, who – still uncomfortable with public displays of same-sex affection – will stare. Staring in general is also common practice particularly in remote villages so don’t let that put you off. It’s just part of the routine in small communities when someone “ new” comes to town . It happens to all of us, Greek or non-Greek. So ignore. Once you people get to know you, they will only smile.

► This is Why You Should Visit Mykonos After All?

4. what are the best places to visit as an lgbt traveler in greece.

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

It goes without saying that there is no one ‘best’ place in Greece to visit as LGBT visitors are as welcome as any other of the country’s 32 million annual guests.

LGBT travelers to Greece will be  spoiled for choice.  Not so much for the crazy gay life and partying (re: Mykonos) but now more so for the feeling of  connection and community . This is why I recommend leaving Mykonos and Santorini for later and opting to visit  smaller, lesser-known islands  and mainland seaside destinations where you can live like a local and  experience first-hand  Greek life at its best.

Yes, Mykonos and Paros are ideal to see and be seen, check out the cool guy or sexy gal, but the latest fad places to be are less popular and off the beaten track and at the same time, you’ll have the beaches, the culture, the food, and of course, the people.

7  Must-visit Gay-friendly Vacation Spots in Greece

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

► Milos –  This once inconspicuous Cyclades island is evolving into the ultimate Greek LGBT destination thanks to its fantastic beaches, traditional villages and great food.

► Lesvos –  For the girls (and boys), this island is the birthplace of the great Greek poet  Sappho . Among the largest Greek islands with dozens of traditional villages, magnificent beaches and also home to the most famous  ouzo . Besides hosting the  International Eressos Women’s Festival  – held annually on Lesvos’ largest, sandiest beach – it hosts global meditation and wellness camps too.

► Pelion –  A magical mountain and its villages, Mt Pelion could easily be described as  heaven on earth.  A must for all travelers and a favorite for gay holidaymakers, particularly the secluded coves along the Mt Pelion’s coastline. You wake up in a romantic village nestled in the woods and minutes later, you’re swimming in soul-soothing waters with lush green forests as a backdrop.

► Folegandros –  Tiny and far away, Folegandros has been winning over the gay crowds in the last couple of years with its isolated beaches and hiking trails. Add to that a “Hora” (capital of the island) that is post-card perfect as if taken out of a theater set and you have the perfect destination for relaxation and immersion.

►  5 Quiet Greek Islands to Visit if You Want to Relax

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

► Galaxidi –  Another mainland destination, Galaxidi is a charming little coastal town brimming with perfectly preserved neoclassical homes and captain’s mansions (“kapetanospita”). A stroll along it’s picturesque port, a dive in the crystal clear (and cold) waters, bicycle riding and exploring the ancient sanctuary of Delphi nearby are just some of the things you can do there.

► Astypalaia –  Also small and obscure, this Greek island attracts lots of busybodies seeking to get away from it all or artsy types looking for inspiration. The island’s spectacular Hora and its castle stands atop a hill overlooking the deep blue like a cherry on a cake. With its special aura, pebbly beaches and orange sunsets, Astypalaia will win you over. And some trivia: believe it or not, a few years back excavations on Astypalaia brought to light what is believed to be the world’s oldest graffiti depicting  gay sex.

► Monemvasia –  On the mainland again, Monemvasia is a  fairytale experience  – a Medieval fortress built on a tiny island linked by a moat to the mainland. Situated in Laconia, near  Sparta  in the Peloponnese. You can stay inside the fort in a renovated tower. A stay in Monemvasia gives you a chance to discover beautiful beaches, the nearby island of Elafonissos, hike Mt Parnon, visit Kastania Cave, and of course, explore Mani,

Commit or tie the knot.

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

As of late, Greece has become a top destination to tie the knot or to commit. Actually,  commitment ceremonies  by the beach are all the rage with several specialized event companies in Greece planning the whole thing for you.

► 5+1 Reasons to Marry or Honeymoon in Greece

Take a gay cruise to greece or hire a sail boat.

Gay cruises love Greece. But besides booking with huge cruise line companies, you can always arrange mini-cruises on the spot, take a day cruise , or board a three-day or five-day cruise from Athens and visit more islands in one go… plus enjoy the luxury and pampering of a cruise adventure. Besides cruising you can also discover the Greek islands by sailboat. Rent a sailboat (or yacht) complete with discreet skipper (or crew) and set off for your sailing escapades in Greece. Renting a sail boat in Greece is relatively doable. It costs as much as a good hotel and if there’s a group of four or six, it’s affordable and unforgettable.

►Taking a cruise is a fantastic way to get a taste of Greece. Contact Greece’s first LGBT-friendly cruise agency allCruises.gr and ask for Eleni or Michalis. Tell them Maria from The Greek Vibe sent you and make sure to use your  promo code GV23.

Go camping .

If you’re the  outdoorsy type , then camping in Greece is a must. Plus camping crowds are overall more open and more accepting (as long as you avoid August). Didn’t bring a tent? No worries, many campsites across Greece rent out tents or caravans. You can even opt for the more luxurious  glamping  (glamor + camping) experience. I use these guys to find the best sites to ‘set up camp ‘.

Participate in Gay Events

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

The annual Gay Pride Parade in Athens and Thessaloniki and events which take place in Athens every year in June and the   International Eressos Women’s Festival   held annually on the island of Lesvos in September are a great chance to mingle while on holiday.

Go on a Road Trip

If adventure and independence is your thing, then rent a car and travel the Greek mainland (Peloponnese, Epirus, Halkidiki, Pelion, Mani – to name a few). You won’t regret it. There’s so much to see and do  and with the help of gay booking sites you can arrange accommodation. Or if you’re like me, you can plan as you go, stopping in places that strike a chord.

► Secrets of Epirus: Discover a New Side of Greece

Maria’s tips.

LGBT Travel in Greece: Where to Go, What to Know

✔︎ If you haven’t used gay-focused booking apps or are visiting an off-the-grid destination like a remote island or village in the mountains, don’t be surprised if you book a room with a double bed and upon arrival the host scrambles to change it into two singles. It’s really more due to inexperience rather than non-acceptance. And this is probably more likely in remote, non-touristy areas.

✔︎ Believe it or not, nudist travelers are more likely to face more unrelenting stares than gay couples. I have noticed, however, that usually Greek beaches popular with naturists are also very much preferred and frequented by LGBT travelers.

✔︎ People in the villages on the mainland tend to be a bit more conservative. Think San Francisco and Jacksonville. So give them time and show understanding. Many of the smaller, distant island or mountain villages got electricity in the late ’80s.

►   10 Plus 1 Nudist Beaches in Greece

✔︎ Very much depends on the season you visit . If you want to have beaches all to yourself, enjoy milder weather, pay lower prices and bump into fewer crowds, I would suggest visiting in May and June or September and early October . You could, of course, do Greece in winter too, which is a whole new experience in itself.

✔︎ Before you decide to visit Greece I suggest thinking about what type of holiday will make you and your partner happy . Do you want to explore? Then do it alone. Do you want to be taken on special-interest tours (for example focused on art, food, wine, archaeology) without the hassle? Then contact one of the many  agencies in Greece  offering specially catered day tours. Do you just want to chill out by the beach? Then book a room at a seaside hotel in a small island town. Do you want a hotel, room, trailer, tent, cruise?

✔︎ Instances of disrespect, bullying or hateful behaviour are rare. Should this occur however make sure to report it.

► 10 Ways to Experience the Best of Greece in Athens

✔︎ Last but not least, I do recommend you stay in Athens  for two or three days. Book a room at one of the many new boutique hotels in the heart of the Greek capital and take a stroll around the historic center. The archaeological sites, the Acropolis, dining and catching a film at an open-air cinema or a concert at the ancient Irodion Theater are plenty to keep you happy. And of course, don’t miss the gay nightlife (which I promise to cover in a future post). Until then, start planning your #nextgreeceadventure !

Still don’t know where to go. Yeah, I’m on holiday to see nature but since I’m nearly the only lesbian in the Netherlands and they other can’t be found, I wanna meet some lesbians my age! I still don’t know where I’m guaranteed to meet them.

Hi, Renee. You could try visiting Lesvos in September for the Eressos Women’s Festival and the Queer Ranch Festival again on Lesvos end of May or visit Athens.

Just breathtaking knowledge you have to put all this together….I will repost it on Worldwidegreeks for you!So much fun with the gay community in Mykonou from way back 98…

Thank you for the kind words, Hash and for supporting TheGreekVibe.com. Glad you enjoyed the read and thanks for sharing!

Nice write up, but what are the best gay friendly bars and shops in Athens? Any recomendations? I know about Gazi area, but which bars and shops for sex essentials or places for cruising are the most known?

Thanks, Stef, glad you enjoyed the read. The Gazi area in central Athens is LGBTQ happening scene with lots of bars and clubs. As for cruising, Zappeio Park around and near the fountain is your safest bet. Shops for sex essentials or saunas can be found around Gazi, Keramikos, and Omonia Square mostly, but due to Covid may be closed. You can also check https://www.facebook.com/GayGreece

Mykonos – LGBT Travel Guide Tips!

If you are wondering where to go for your next LGBT vacation, this “Mykonos – LGBT Travel Guide Tips!” article is perfect. Namely, here we will cover the basic information about gay Mykonos. More specifically, where are the best hotels? What are the best beaches and clubs?

Let’s start, shall we?

Short introduction on Gay-Mykonos

The island was made famous in the 1970s by Jackie Onassis and Grace Kelly. Since then, gay people have flocked to Gay Mykonos, this infamous Greek island on the Aegean Sea. And it’s obvious why!

First and foremost, there are a lot of charming beaches. The second point is the desirable Mediterranean climate. Thirdly, there are plenty of luxury hotels. And finally, there’s the legendary gay nightlife that lasts from sundown to sunrise. It makes Mykonos a popular travel destination for queers who want to relax in style and get away from it all.

Like Bangkok or Ibiza, Gay Mykonos is one of the most notorious gay culture, nightlife, and hedonism epicenters. More importantly, all things can happen in Mykonos! A fabulous gay playground where gays tend to outnumber others, especially during the XLSIOR Mykonos International Summer Gay Festival.

While Greece may still be primarily a traditionally Orthodox country, Mykonos has changed its tune. For example, he captured opportunity in the LGBT/Hetero party scene. As a result, most of Mykonos’s accommodations can now be considered gay-friendly. And that’s why most local bars/clubs are open and welcoming.

Gay Mykonos Guide: The Essential Guide To LGBT Travel In Mykonos Greece

Attractions in mykonos.

Everyone has their taste. Besides beaches and nightlife, you will also find interesting places on the island. First, the quarter of Little Venice, the Windmills, and the church of Paraportiani are the main things to see on your stroll around Mykonos Town. Ultimately, do not miss boat excursions to Delos. It was once the mighty Greek city-state (polis). But now, it is an uninhabited island and an attractive archaeological site.

Little Venice

Little Venice is the most charming quarter of Chora , the capital of Mykonos Island. With colorful houses constructed right by the sea, it is a famous spot with vibrant nightlife and pleasant cafeterias.

Little Venice, Mykonos

The Windmills (Katom Milli)

The hill with the traditional windmills over Chora offers the best view of the picturesque village and port. More importantly, these windmills have been restored and have become the island’s trademark over the years.

Old Port of Mykonos

The Old Port of Mykonos is located in Mykonos town, just behind the famous Little Venice.

Matoyianni Street

Matoyianni Street is the epicenter of the Chora—a happening place. You can stroll along with white houses, perusing souvenir shops, boutiques, jewelry stores, and much more by day. But if the hunger strikes, you could opt for a Souvlaki or gyros. Alternatively, you can sit at one of many taverns, which tend to be more reasonably priced here and more profound into the town.

Finally, there are many restaurants at romantic spots in the evening, with oleanders climbing the walls and bars offering refreshments until the early morning hours.

Sailing Cruise to Delos

Escape the crowded beaches and head on a super-sailing luxury yacht for a fun day of drinks included, food, and a view of Mykonos. You won’t be on dry land. A must-do is to visit the archaeological site of Delos. Explore the magical coves and beaches of the island of Rhenia and Delos and immerse yourself in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the yacht. During the 7 hours of sailing, you can learn basic sailing skills, sail the boat, or enjoy the sun on the deck. At noon, enjoy a home-cooked lunch on board and prepare for a guided tour of the island of Delos and its archaeological site.

Gay Beaches in Mykonos, Greece

When we are talking about pretty beaches, Mykonos won’t disappoint you. Even more, it will surely spoil you. It offers a variety of beautiful sandy beaches. There’s a downside to it, however. Because of its popularity, almost all the beaches get incredibly crowded during the entire season. Nevertheless, things quieted down again in September.

Our tip: Best time to visit it is September and June.

Public transportation to the beaches

Buses head out to the most famous beaches in Mykonos around 9-10 pm, but if you want to visit the northern beaches, which the public buses don’t reach, you might consider hiring a car in Mykonos. Super Paradise and Elia are central to Mykonos’s gay beach scene. But there are also a few other options if you prefer something quieter.

Elia is a big sandy beach located 12 kilometers from the capital. It is the longest sandy beach in Mykonos. Above all, it is completely organized, offering many facilities, from taverns and bars to water sports facilities such as water-skiing, parasailing, and windsurfing.

Elia beach on Mykonos

Super Paradise Beach

Previously the most famous gay beach in Mykonos before Elia stole its crown. Today the newly opened gay Jackie O’ Beach Club with a pool overlooking the sea makes this the ‘IT’ Mykonos gay beach again. While the gay/nude beach is relatively small, there is beautiful sand, dazzling turquoise waters, and sexy men sporting speedos or less.

SUPER PARADISE BEACH

Agrari Beach

Five minutes walk from Elia Beach is this secluded gay beach in Mykonos, with smaller crowds and away from prying eyes.

The rooms are modern and clean; some even have a kitchen unit, so you can self-cater to get that extra alone time. The swimming pool area is chilled and attractive.

Leading gay bars and clubs in Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the most gay-friendly vacation destinations in the world. That is why you would expect an incredible gay nightlife scene. And luckily, Mykonos does not disappoint!

Depending on your mood, you can find anything here, from a relaxed cocktail evening in an upscale bar to all-night raving parties surrounded by your queer family! More importantly, it’s one of Greece’s most desirable and expensive islands. That will cost you more than your typical gay beach holiday in Phuket, Punta Cana, or Puerto Vallarta.

The Mykonos gay scene here starts to get going when people head to the bars for the magical sunset; then, most bars and clubs are packed from midnight until early morning, with a mix of tourists and a few locals. For many gay bars in Mykonos, flip-flops and tank tops are the uniforms of choice – but some more upscale clubs and venues demand more.

Still, as Coco Chanel declared, “luxury equals comfort,” so don’t get too caught up, as plenty of t-shirts come off later in the night!

Tip : Our top advice for first-time and solo gay travelers in Mykonos is to take a gaily night tour  to make the most of your vacation.

Gay Bars  in Mykonos, Greece

Jackie o’ town bar.

The Jackie O gay bar is a modern designer bar with a Greek feel and a large terrace for watching the sunset over the water; after dark, it becomes a great place to dance the night away; friendly staff, good music, and nightly Drag shows make this bar a must-try when in Mykonos.

Jacky O gay bar in mykonos

It is a trendy, buzzy spot with laid-back lounge details, some of the best cocktails on the island, and eclectic decor that matches the clientele.

Although the crowd is predominantly over the 40s, experienced gay travelers recommend  Lola to people who want to make new friends since it provides a warm and enjoyable atmosphere that is difficult to resist.

Lola bar, Mykonos

Kastro’s Mykonos

A bar and restaurant are in the perfect spot for fabulous sunsets. Warm service, laid-back vibes, and some of the best food on the island (try the sea bass with broccoli and coconut puree). This is Greece as you imagined, and you will likely return night after night.

Kastros bar, Mykonos

Why do travelers recommend it?

Firstly, because it is a little hidden gem. A perfect spot if you’re looking for a place to impress your 1st date! It’s one of the favorite spots for dinner or romantic drinks, primarily because of the backdrop of the Aegean Sea behind you.

Although not exclusively a gay bar, Kastro’s attracts a lot of gay couples who are looking for some time out. Lastly, the food at Kastro’s is also wonderfully delicious and worth trying out.

Note : If you want to learn more about the best gay-friendly hotels in Mykonos, try reading our recommended article, Gay-friendly accommodation in Mykonos .

Gay Clubs in Mykonos Greece

Jackie o’ club.

Jackie O’s is a primarily gay, family-friendly beach club with a large pool, Jacuzzi, beachfront, and private Kaiki (traditional Greek fishing boat) for day cruises. Renowned Greek chef Christoferos Peskias leads the fine-dining yet casual Mediterranean restaurant with an all-day bar serving outstanding food and signature cocktails. Food and drink service extends to the pool, beach, and central lounge areas. Open all day until about 1:00 a.m. with festive nightly drag queen sets with shows starting at roughly 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. It is the original and sister property to Jackie O’ Bar in Mykonos Town, with an additional live drag show later in the evening. A currently under-construction hotel will also join the mix in 2021.

Babylon is the most popular gay club of Mykonos, located next door to Jackie O’s. We always have a ball here – a lively, fun atmosphere continues until around 6 am. Inside there is a dancing area with drag shows and GoGo dancers. Outside, it has a beautiful outdoor terrace (complete with ocean spray!) where you can people-watch and gossip about who’s gone to the Church cruising ground next door!

During XLSIOR , Babylon hosts some of the best gay-themed parties. Whether you come to Babylon during XLSIOR or any other time, we guarantee you’ll have an enjoyable night out here!

Babylon club, Mykonos town

@54 bar and a club

@54 Lounge Bar & Discotheque is the new kid on the block, opening its doors in 2014, and has become the place you must be seen in Mykonos with exclusive weekly parties and top DJs make for a good night out, don’t forget to enjoy the sunset with a glass of champagne from the terrace. Step inside and dance the night away when the day has turned to night.

@54 bar Mykonos

Cavo Paradiso

It is THE famous mega-club of Mykonos and is often rated as one of the best in the world. It is located just above Paradise Beach (i.e., the beach on the west side of Super Paradise Beach), perched up high on a 150-foot-high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. During the summer months, Cavo Paradiso hosts some of the biggest parties, which reminded us of some of the mega-club parties in Ibiza. The crowd is usually a mix of gay and straight guys – and those in between!

Note: Discover more gay friendly bar in our recommended article Leading gay bars and clubs in Mykonos .

Cruising & Gay Saunas  in Mykonos

While the gay scene here is in full swing, the gay sauna scene in Mykonos is not as developed.  For this reason, your options are minimal.  Therefore, choosing another destination like Tel Aviv, Paris, Valencia, or Fort Lauderdale is better if it is essential to you.

While the designer gay hotel in Mykonos, Elysium, has free use of the hydro-massage room, sauna, and steam room, it is generally not that place. Gay hookup apps remain a favorite way of meeting, but you can try cruising in Mykonos around the Church of Paraportiani.

You can also visit the gay-popular Agrari and Elia beaches frequented by local and foreign guys. However, you might want to consider your private apartment in Mykonos.

Note : For beginners in Mykonos, solo, gay travelers, or LGBTQ travelers who want to make new friends quickly, we strongly recommend doing a gay night tour.

This Uncrowded Greek Island Is Arguably Even Prettier Than Mykonos And More Affordable

village on Tinos, Greece

It's fair to say Greece has been discovered. With its iconic whitewashed architecture, ancient ruins, and picturesque beaches, it's a top destination for both Europeans and international travelers. So, it's not surprising that this flood of tourism has caused prices to rise and local purveyors to tack on additional 'tourist' fees. Perhaps you've heard some of the stories about visitors getting price gouged at restaurants in touristy areas of Greece . This leaves many Greece-visiting-hopefuls looking for more budget-friendly options after recognizing the high expenses associated with a stay in Mykonos or Santorini. From there, the search often leads straight to smaller islands, and in the case of the Cyclades, that search ends at the third largest island in the chain: Tinos.

While it may only be a 75-sq-mi island, it offers all the things travelers love about Greece — at a much quieter pace. Compared to the booming nightlife and quick-paced tempo of Mykonos, Tinos is a sleepy island. Yet, it's not one to be discounted considering its striking beauty, delicious food scene, and connection with the traditional Greek lifestyle.

History and culture through architecture on Tinos

With a full-time population of only 9,000 people, Tinos is an island of small communities. While there is the main town of Chora on the southern side port area, there are around 60 villages scattered throughout the island. This is the heart of Tinos. Each village offers its own personality, only revealed through personal, slow inspection. Therefore, traversing the island to spend time in the quaint developments is the best way to embrace the essence of Tinos.

Chora certainly has its own charm, with the same cobblestone streets and Cyclades architecture that Mykonos and Santorini are famous for. Then there's the early 1800's Church of Panagia Megalochari, an iconic pilgrimage site that sits above Chora. Leaving town to introduce yourself to the villages around the island, don't miss "the balcony of Tinos," Dio Horia, a quaint village built into the hillside overlooking the island and the coast. Also make stops at marble-cloaked Pyrgos and Isternia, and the storybook Volax village, with its massive granite boulders and the charming poem lyrics on the doors.

Watch the hillsides, too, so you can locate and examine some of the nearly 1,000 dovecotes on the island. These might look like small white castles, but they are actually pigeon coops, dating back to the 18th century when the birds were raised for meat and fertilizer.

The essence of Tinos

While the people, culture, and history are reason enough to visit Tinos, it offers the Mediterranean climate, food, and beaches you're looking for, too. On the food scene, stop at any taverna to delight in the freshest seafood and local delicacies. Ask for some fresh Tinos cheese as well, and be sure to sample the local Tinos beer and wine, both made on the island. If you're looking for beach time, you'll find them scattered around the island. The people are friendly enough that you may even be able to get a local's perspective, just be sure not to offend with unintended hand gestures.

As for costs, while food, rental cars, and excursions will run similar to those on Mykonos, it's much easier to find affordable lodging on the smaller island of Tinos. Where the luxurious Mykonos can cost hundreds of dollars — or even several thousand — per night, we saw many listings for $100-200 in all sorts of locations around Tinos. The best part is, the island is easy to get to, with just a short ferry ride from Mykonos, or a longer ferry ride directly from the airport in Athens.

With its small-town, friendly vibe, natural beauty, and culture, Tinos is the Greek island you've been looking for. However, if you're not convinced it's the right fit, check out the island of Alonissos as an alternative to the overcrowded Santorini and Mykonos.
