nakhon Ratchasima is the biggest province in Thailand in term of space. nakhon Ratchasima, otherwise known as Khorat, is the largest northeastern province , and the inhabitants of the province are mainly engaged in agricultural activities , growing such diverse crops as rice, sugar cane, sesame, and fruit. There are more than 100 savings and agricultural cooperatives in the province, 35 irrigation projects, and 7,122 industrial factories. Most of the factories are rice mills, tapioca product manufacturers, and industrial factories. Historical ly, Khorat province was an important area for thousands of years, first as the site of several ancient prehistoric communities and later as important outposts of the Dvaravati and Khmer Empires. Ruins of both Dvaravati and Khmer Temple s are located across Khorat, particularly at Amphoe Sung Noen and Amphoe Phimai, the latter one of the most important provincial capitals of the Angkorian Empire. To this day, Khorat remains an important province and City , functioning as Northeastern Thailand ’s main transportation hub and economic center. nakhon Ratchasima, generally known as Khorat, is Thailand ’s largest province . Situated on Thailand ’s sprawling northeastern plateau, approximately 260 kilometers northeast of Bangkok , the City itself serves as the gateway to the lower northeastern region. Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima (นครราชสีมา) - otherwise known as Korat - is the first major city in Issan as you travel from Bangkok. The Province features a major city, important universities, festivals and two stunning national parks. Korat is Thailand's largest province.

You will often hear people refer to Nakhon Ratchasima – otherwise known as Korat – as the gateway to Issan. Many travelers pass through here to start their journey into the north-east, without paying much attention to the province itself. You will currently not find many backpackers here, but there are a few expats that come here to settle down (usually with their Thai wife or girlfriend).

That being said, there are still a few interesting attractions in Korat, and the city is in the process of being developed. There should be a lot more tourism in the province within the next few years.

Getting to Nakhon Ratchasima

This is the most convenient and cheapest way to get into Nakhon Ratchasima. From Bangkok, head to the main bus terminal in Mo Chit. Go to the second floor and there will be a few different windows to choose from. My recommendation is to go to window 65. This is the most comfortable bus we have traveled on to Korat. They have free wifi, you can charge your phone, and the chair is actually a massage chair!

Whatever one you choose, they are all going to cost 191 Baht and take about 4 hours to get there. Just tell the driver where you would like to get off.

Another option is to take the train. This can be a rather enjoyable journey with some spectacular views. It is best to choose a 2nd class air-conditioned seat, which will take between four and six hours and cost around 350 baht.

If you are really wanting to save some money and experience a more authentic journey, you could opt for a slower 3rd class train with no air con. This is going to take at least six hours and cost just 50 baht.

Getting around

This province is best explored if you have your own vehicle, so it could be worth renting a car or motorbike for your stay. That way you are free to explore as you like.

In the city center, you can get buses and songthaews to get about, but they can be difficult to know which one to take, so always make sure you ask before you get on.

There are taxis and tuk-tuks available but they are going to be a bit more expensive than other places such as Bangkok. You will find many tuk-tuks outside The Mall (the main shopping center). Bear in mind that not everybody speaks English in Korat, so there may be a bit of a communication barrier.

By Grab taxi

This is another alternative to taking local taxis. You can use the Grab app to say where you want to go and where you want picking up from. It will tell you exactly how much it is going to cost and how far away your driver is.

Things to do in Nakhon Ratchasima

These are the top attractions I suggest you check out:

• Nakhon Ratchasima zoo – It can always be a bit uncertain when visiting zoos in Thailand, but this one was pretty clean and the animals seemed like they were well looked after. You can either walk around, take an inexpensive hop on/hop off bus tour or you can rent your own golf cart to drive around in.
• Save One night market – This is a huge market and the biggest one in Nakhon Ratchasima. You will be able to find almost anything you want here.
• 100 years market – A small food market with a range of delicious meals, along with displays of old antiques.
• Wat Ban Rai (Elephant temple) – This temple gets its nickname because of the giant elephant head attached to the front.
• Khao Yai national park – This area of natural beauty makes for a great weekend getaway from Korat city.
• Phimai historical park – These Khmer temple ruins are a must-see in Nakhon Ratchasima. It is one of the largest in Thailand.
• Flora Park – This can be a nice day out to capture some great photography shots.

Where to go next

After visiting Korat, we suggest heading over to Buriram to the east or up north to Khon Kaen.

Most of Thailand falls in to the generic high and low season categories, including Nakhon Ratchasima.

High season - begins in November and runs through to February, bringing cooler temperatures, lush greenery from the previous months of rain, good air quality, and less rain. The downside is larger crowds and sometimes higher prices for tours, flights and accomodation.

Low season - begins in July and runs through to October. During low season the temperatures are higher, the chance of rain and storms are higher. That doesn't mean it's a bad time to visit though, if you can be flexible, there are deals to be found on flights and accomodation.

Destinations like Nakhon Ratchasima in both northern and north eastern regions can be significantly cooler during the high/cool season than central and southern provinces like Bangkok or Phuket. It's a welcome and noticable change in season which may require a wardrobe change, especially at night.

As Nakhon Ratchasima is in the northern/north eastern region, it's important you consider the smokey/burning season which affects the north, north east and sometimes central/eastern provinces. You can find more information for current and historical air quality on aqicn.org .

Final notes: Prices are dynamic. Check the same hotel on both Booking.com and Agoda to see which has the best deal at any given time (go through to checkout to make sure all VAT and service charges are factored in). You can go one step further by calling the hotel and checking the price for booking directly. In our experience this saves money 50% of the time but you have less guarantees.

Fire Department - 199 In case of an emergency such as a house fire, or forest fire, call 199 for the Fire Department to be dispatched to your location.

Highway Police - 1193 If you plan on driving in Thailand, then you may end up needing to use this number if you break down in an unsafe place etc.

A landlocked region of temples, jungle and mountains, Nakhon Ratchasima is Thailand ’s biggest province. Nakhon Ratchasima city (also called Korat) is an easy bus journey from Bangkok , so use it as your base for activities such as spotting Asian elephants, seeing an ancient reclining Buddha and dropping into museums covering topics from mushrooms to dinosaurs.

Buddhist Temple

One of the biggest and most-impressive Khmer-era ruin complexes in Thailand, Phimai Historical Park provides a captivating look into the past. Located in the centre of Phimai town, the site is surrounded by what remains of the walls, deep foundations and moats. Inside, there are large courtyards with a number of halls, ponds, and towers. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it is thought that the site was mainly dedicated to Buddhism .

In the Dan Khun Thot District, you’ll find one of the more unusual temples in Thailand . Towards the rear of the temple of Wat Ban Rai is a huge shrine built with a protruding elephant’s trunk and stripy tusks. No two parts of the shrine’s outer walls are the same, with scenes of Buddha’s life and religious symbolism crafted from tiles and mosaics. Even the toilet buildings here, topped with mermaid-like statues in pink and blue, are photo-worthy.

4. Go to the Mister Mushroom farm

One of Nakhon Ratchasima ’s quirkiest attractions, Mister Mushroom will teach you all about the growing processes for different types of the edible fungus. This farm, located in Wang Nam Khiao District, has shrooms sprouting in all sizes, shapes and colours, some growing out of bags, some in pots and others in glass tanks. Several statues add to the intrigue, and the farm even has its own catchy song – all about mushrooms, naturally.

5. See the reclining Buddha of Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram

Inside the temple of Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram, you’ll come face-to-face, or face-to-foot, with one of Thailand’s oldest reclining Buddhas. The statue, extending 13.3m (43.6ft) in length, is thought to be around 1,300 years old. Unlike many of the nation’s Buddha statues , it hasn’t been covered with plaster, stucco or gold – so the fact that it looks its age has made it all the more revered. You’ll find this piece of cultural history in Nakhon Ratchasima’s region of Sung Noen.

6. Visit the Lam Takhong Dam

Natural Feature

At 251m (823ft) long and 40.3m (132ft) high, the Lam Takhong Dam is an impactful sight. Located in Sikhio District, there is a circular viewing platform from which to see the 1970s construction. But it’s also become a popular place for leisure and relaxation. People come to admire the beautiful views and unwind alongside the water. A number of vendors sell cold drinks and popular Thai dishes .

7. Walk around Wat Sala Loi temple

Wat Sala Loi, in Nakhon Ratchasima city, is one of the region’s most important temples. Dating from the early 1800s, legend says that it was built by a heroine from the city, and a statue of the revered lady stands on the grounds. The most striking feature is the ordination hall, which was built to look like a traditional Chinese sailing junk boat, while the pond offers a peaceful place to sit and contemplate.

A family-friendly attraction in Pak Chong, Thongsomboon Club is an adventure park with a Wild West theme. Designed to resemble an American frontier town, the accommodation includes wigwams, wagons, caravans and chalets. The rides are small, but there’s plenty to get your adrenaline pumping, with the log flume, dry sledge and go karts popular with kids. Or, you can fully embrace the theme by riding the rodeo bull and then taking to horseback for a trek around the grounds.

9. See the dinosaurs at Korat Fossil Museum

Delve into the world of Thai natural history at the Korat Fossil Museum, attached to the Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University. Its petrified wood garden is one of only seven in the world; some of the hulks of wood-turned-rock glint like gemstones. Nakhon Ratchasima and surrounding areas were also once prime stomping grounds for dinosaurs, so the museum has an intriguing collection of dinosaur fossils and bones discovered in Isan, plus life-sized dino models.

Phimai Historical Park is one of the most impressive Nakhon Ratchasima attractions dating back to the Khmer era. In many ways, it resembles the internationally-acclaimed Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

It features stunning walls, moats, spacious courtyards, colorful ponds, and spectacular towers. Although the site was dedicated to Buddhism, the primary religion today, the temple also showcases Hinduism’s influences, which the Khmers adopted. The ruins lie on one end of an ancient highway.

Because of its peaceful setting, the site is ideal for meditation and other spiritual activities. Visiting it will lead tourists to the rich history of the region.

Trek to Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai National Park is the first to be declared a national park in Thailand , owing to its unrivaled biodiversity. Today, it has become a popular come-on for foreign and local extreme adventurers, hikers, botanists, and ecologists.

The area is dominated by a mountain known as “Khao Yai,” which translates to “Blue Mountain.” Surprisingly, the park’s wilderness is accessible to newbie hikers as paved trails and roads crisscross the area.

The park boasts incredible wildlife, such as endemic gibbons, elephants, deer, bears, and monkeys, including various kinds of reptiles and birds. Then there are towing waterfalls cascading on beautiful pools such as Heaw Narok and Heaw Suwat.

Explore Wat Ban Rai

Wat Ban Rai is one of the most unusual temples in Thailand , located in the Dan Khun Thot District. The temple looks like any other regular temple in the country, with similar features and patterns.

But when entering the rear of the site, tourists will find a vast ceramic-covered shrine in the form of an elephant with two beautiful naga statues flanking the walkway.

The two parts of the shrine’s outer walls are not identical. From here, there are religious symbols and scenes of Buddha’s life made out of mosaics and tiles. The building also hosts many other colorful statues, including many exciting artworks. Tourists can climb a golden statue to get a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes.

Mister Mushroom is a farm nestled in Wang Nam Khiao District. It is considered one of the quirky and whimsical destinations in the province. Here, tourists can learn and experience the different processes of growing mushrooms and the ideal conditions to ensure healthy production.

The mushrooms come in various colors, sizes, and shapes as they are of different varieties. Visit Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram

Where is the oldest reclining Buddha in Thailand ? The answer lies at Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram. Experts say that the statue is more than 1,300 years old! Made from sandstone, the figure wasn’t covered with gold, concrete, plasters, or gold.

So one could wonder how the ancient inhabitants built such a resilient structure. Also known as Wat Phra Non, the temple hosts other stunning statues from ancient and modern times.

Gaze at the Lam Takhong Dam

Built-in 1974, the Lam Takhong Dam created a massive reservoir that supplies steady water to vast farms. It has also served as a power source for Thailand’s first pumped storage power plant .

Aside from its industrial use, the dam has become one of the emerging Nakhon Ratchasima tourist attractions. Many families love to come here, especially during weekends, to enjoy panoramic mountain views, go fishing, and swim in the lake’s pristine waters. Some locals sell authentic Thai dishes and snacks on the viewpoints and banks of the dam.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Meditate at Wat Sala Loi

Located within the city proper, Wat Sala Loi is one of the primary temples in Nakhon Ratchasima. It has been around since the early 1800s; thus, it plays an important historical role. The temple hosts a statue of a revered lady named Thao Suranari.

Its most prominent feature is the ordination hall, which resembles a traditional Chinese sailing junk. Differently-designed potteries, as well as stunning shrines and vibrant statues, decorate different parts of the temple.

Have Fun at Thongsombon Club

Thongsombon Club is ideal for family weekend getaways. Both locals and tourists will have an American-like feel when visiting the club. Many buildings and structures here resemble typical architectures in the American lands of Cowboys and Indians.

The rides have two levels that are bound by an old-fashioned steam train. Tourists can try ski lifts, go-karts, flying foxes, log flumes, and dry sleds here. Visitors can also try horse riding and BB Gun Shooting for a more adrenaline-pumping experience.

Visit the Korat Fossil Museum

The Korat Fossil Museum is ideal for tourists interested in natural history. As the name suggests, the museum contains fossils from around Northeast Thailand.

Most of these consist of elephant bones and minerals, including those of dinosaurs. The museum aims to provide interactive experiences for visitors to make them appreciate the importance and relevance of natural history. A garden also hosts pieces of rare and gem-like petrified wood.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

• Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
• Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
• Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
• Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
• Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Jim Thompson was a Thai silk expert who disappeared when hiking to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia . Silk is the main attraction here, and tourists can learn how it is processed traditionally.

Known locally as “Khorat”, Nakhon Ratchasima is a large north-eastern province in the heart of ‘Issan’. Around 260 kilometres from Bangkok, this is a large province which is steeped in history, especially that which relates to the Khmer kingdom. As a result there are numerous sites covering all aspects of Khmer culture. The province is rich in nature with forests, mountains, waterfalls and reservoirs. 25 Exciting Things to Do in Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima

“Where?” I hear you say. Yes,  Nakhon Ratchasima, better known – or shall I say better remembered – as Korat. The name is both used for the city and the province of which it is the capital, and the shorter name of Korat comes from an older name the city was called many years ago.

A 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok in a North-Easterly direction will bring you to this wonderful city, and while it might have the reputation lure of Bangkok or Phuket, it shouldn’t be written off when it comes to things to do and places to see in Thailand.

With a population of just over 200 000, a host of shopping malls, a sports stadium, zoo, lots of interesting temples, museums and more, there is a reason why Korat is one of the four most important role-playing cities of Isan – The North Eastern territory of Thailand.

It's very easy to get to, too, with buses departing from Bangkok’s Mo Chit bus station roughly twice per hour. It's an inspiring ride too, once that is the concrete jungle disappears and you find yourself staring at far-off horizons overlooking farmlands, fields, wide open spaces and Khao Yai national park halfway into the journey.

Accommodation is very easy to find in the city, ranging from super cheap apartment rentals to ridiculously low-priced 5 star hotels. The people are quite unique too, speaking a dialect known as Thai-Korat, not the Isan-Thai spoken in other more North Easterly provinces.

If you happen to find yourself passing through this city, or feel like getting off the beaten Thailand tourist track, why not consider immersing yourself in a corner of Thai culture you won’t find in Bangkok or the Southern Islands. Western travellers here are few and far between and you might just have to up your Thai language skills a notch before ordering food or asking for directions!

Here's a list of 25 things to do in Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima…

1. Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo (Korat Zoo)

You can spend an entire day here. As a matter of fact, why not spend a night or two in one of the comfortable chalets on offer? The zoo covers a massive area with a kaleidoscope of animal species from all over the world. The African big five, tigers, lizards, camels and also marine life are but a few wonderful animals to be discovered here.

The Zoo is situated in Muang District, Chaimongkol and regular buses from Korat city centre provide easy transfers to and from the zoo.

2. Korat Zoo Lagoon and Water Park

Situated within Korat zoo you'll find the Water Park to enjoy a spot of cooling down. Being the largest park of it’s kind in the Northeastern area, you'll be sure to kill a few hours here with a relaxing stroll and splash. If you've got kids, they'll love it here!

3. Phimai Historical Park

Take a stroll back in time and witness ruins from as early as the 11th century. The architecture of these historical gems is in Angkor style, which inspired a number of important structures, cities and buildings in Thailand during later years.

The park is roughly 60kms north-east of Korat City and easily accessible for self-drive travellers or by public transport.

4. Thao Suranaree Monument

A true testament of will, determination and the power of one. During an invasion of Korat in the early 1800s, the wife of an absent general took it upon herself to take control and lead the residents of Korat to defend their city. They were victorious, and Khunying Mo was rewarded the honourable title of Thao Suranaree by the King of that era.

The monument is certainly worth visiting for a photo opportunity and can be found in Korat City near the Chumphon Gate.

5. Wat Sala Loi

Another historical temple attached to the above mentioned lady, Thao Suranaree. Along with her husband, she constructed this temple in the 1820s. It was then awarded the most significant religious building in 1973. A plaster statue of the war heroine can be seen at this site along with clay decorations portraying the life of Buddha. The temple is also the final resting place of Khun Thao Suranaree's ashes.

The structure can be found near the Lam Takong River in the North East part of the city, only a few minutes walk from the Thao Suranaree statue.

6. Lamtakhong Dam

The Lamtakhong dam construction started in the 1970s, specifically to irrigate the surrounding farmlands. In later years it also became the water storage facility of The Lamtakhong Power Plant, which was a first for Thailand. The dam is a tranquil, relaxing environment to break away from everyday city life. Pack the picnic baskets and visit the damn for a memorable Thai sunset.

The dam is found on the Mittraphap Highway roughly 70 kms from Korat City between the districts of Si Khiu and Pak Chona.

7. Flora Park

Here’s one for the nature lovers! Drown yourself in a massive selection of plants and flowers while taking in the pleasant smells and peaceful, colourful surroundings. Relax with a refreshing drink at the coffee shop or buy some memories from the gift shop. If your timing is right, you can experience the Flower Festival that happens each March.

The Flora Park is located roughly 100 kms South of Korat City in the Wang Nam Khiao District.

8. Ratchasima Mall (Korat Mall)

Okay, so visiting a shopping mall might not be on everyone’s list of things to do when traveling and hoping to explore the new and unknown. The Ratchasima Mall, however, is considered as one of the top shopping malls outside of Bangkok. It offers something for everyone and the food court is a haven for any type of cuisine you can possibly imagine.

The mall is situated in the city centre of Korat on Mitthaphap Road.

9. Korat Horse Racing Club

Like the zoo, this may represent an unethical attraction for some. But for many the majestic horses and of course the betting is a lure that excites. Spend a few hours enjoying quality food, a few drinks and if you feel the luck is on your side, put a bet or two on your favourite contender!

The Horse Racing Club can be found just as you enter the city from the west, in Suranaree Army Region 2.

10. Arts of Korat

This mirage art museum is for everyone! So don’t think for one second you’ll be walking around a boring art collection looking at paintings hanging on a wall. Here you actually become part of the art, as the 3D paintings come alive and bring you closer to art than you’ve ever been before.

The Arts of Korat is found in the Nai Mueang sub-district in the city of Korat.

11. Wat Phayap Temple

Wat Phayap Temple is a lovely temple found in the city centre of Korat, but with a slight surprise the moment you enter. The interior of this temple has been made to look like a cave. If you find yourself wandering around in the city, pop in here for a quick look around. The temple won’t be found amongst the lists of top tourist attractions in the area, but the locals regard it as a very spiritual and peaceful building.

12. Prasat Phanom Wan

Prasat Phanom Wan is another temple that was constructed during early centuries. Initially it was dedicated to Shiva and meant as a Hindu site, but over the decades it became a place of Buddhist prayer. A large portion of the site has been ruined, but with more than enough left to appreciate the building for what it was, and still is today.

The site is found in Ban Makha, roughly 20 kilometres from the city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

13. Maha Viravong National Museum

The Maha Viravong National Museum was created around the art collection of an important Monk from the area and other cultural pieces from historic sites. You will find Buddha images from different timeframes and also pottery pieces from bygone eras. The museum is quite small, but pumped full of rich Thai history and interesting visuals.

The Museum is located in the city centre and in the form of a Thai style house, found near Klang Plaza 2 behind the public library.

14. O&D Pub & Restaurant

If you’re feeling a bit homesick and you are longing for familiar, generous portions of Western food like juicy burgers or a tender steak, then this is the place. Sit back, relax and enjoy some easy tunes while watching international sport on the big screen televisions. The pub offers a variety of local and international beers to drown any homesickness you thought you had! Don’t overlook the Thai food selections though!

The pub is found in Khok Sung, 69 Moo 7. Make sure to keep an eye out for the restaurant’s sign as the twists and turns might be a tad confusing at times.

15. Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram

This site also goes by another name, Wat Phra Non which means ‘Sleeping Buddha’. Many travellers have seen the impressive reclining Buddha in Bangkok, but this similar sandstone sculpture is the first and oldest one in Thailand! The piece dates back to the BC era and unbelievably it hasn’t been treated in order to preserve it!

Wat Dhammachakra Sema Ram is found about 30km’s outside the city of Khorat, near a town called Sung Noen.

16. Korat City Pillar

A city pillar can be found in most major cities in Thailand. It is called ‘Lak Mueang’ by the locals and residents, which refers to the specific spirit of the city. The City pillar will, in most cases be placed in a shrine which is seen as the home of this city spirit. Locals place a huge amount of importance and respect in this pillar.

17. Korat City Gates

The old city of Khorat used to be surrounded by walls and a moat many years ago. Today only one of the four gates that used to lead into the Old Town is still in its original state, while the others have been renovated and restructured. This original gate is called Chumpon Gate and is found on the West side of the city. Watch out when walking through it though! Old tales will tell you that any foreigner walking through these gates end up staying in Korat for extended periods of time!

18. Korat Fossil Museum

Step back in time, just a few million years should do it! This museum boasts a wealth of stories about animals and creatures believed to have walked the land in Korat and Thailand many years ago. Here you can read and learn about one of the world’s largest and most mysterious elephant graveyards found to date, along with a few dinosaurs roaming the complex too.

Khorat Fossil Museum is found in The Suranaree Sub-district, Muang, Province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

19. Petrified Wood Museum

This museum forms part of the previously mentioned Fossil Museum and can be found within the same complex. Here you can view dozens of petrified wood pieces dating back thousands of years. The smuggling of these pieces became a huge problem, creating public awareness through opening this museum was one of the suggested solutions to stop the illegal industry.

20. A Game of Golf

For those who enjoy q game of golf every now and again, pick a course, any course! No less than five quality golf courses can be found in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima. They can be found scattered across the province so you don’t have to travel very far to find one.

21. Korat Arts, Crafts & Food

The province of Nakhon Ratchasima offers a few very interesting and unique markets and spots to explore, including a large variety of pottery products in Dan Kwian village, silk products from Pak Thong Chai and crafts made sold by housewives at the Provincial Hall of Korat. Unique food items from the area include fermented foods, Pak Chong, Korat noodles and custard apple that is sold all year round.

22. Khao Yai National Park

The third largest park in Thailand is found on the edge of Nakhon Ratchasima province, crossing over into three other provinces. It contains thousands of different plant species along with hundreds of birds species. A number of epic hiking trails and waterfalls can be found, including a dramatic 80m fall used in the movie ‘The Beach’. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will have a royal time exploring this park.

The Park is situated on the West side of the Sankamphaeng Mountains on the South-Western border of the Korat Province.

23. Spot a Korat Cat!

Yes, this is where the famous species originated. It is one of the oldest known cat breeds, and in Thailand giving a Korat cat as a gift is an offering of good luck and prosperity. Before the Korat cat became a worldwide sensation in the last century, it was very rarely sold and usually only given as a gift. And so ne of your things to do while in Korat, is to keep your eyes peeled and see if you can spot a Korat cat!

24. Enjoy a Korat Festival

Korat hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. Keep your eyes and ears open for any festivities happening in the city or province during the time you'll be visiting. Festivals include shows of art, cultural celebrations, religious gatherings, light shows, boat races, traditional ceremonies and more. The Thao Suranaree-, Phimai Boat- and Phimai Festivals are three of the main events that happen on a yearly basis and are held in the city.

25. Korat Sport Stadium

The construction of this world-class sports facility was completed in 2007 and dedicated to the 80th Birthday of The King. It has hosted a number of world sporting and athletics events and is the home ground of Nakhon Ratchasima Football Club. If you thought football was only played passionately in Europe or South America, think again. Korat residents are very enthusiastic about their local team and really create a exciting vibe on match day. Be sure to watch a game if you can.

The stadium is located roughly 3 kilometres South of Korat City.

Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima  or Korat  Thailand  is the most prosperous  province  of the East. Its richness of  Culture  is very interesting since it has its own folk song called ‘Pleng Korat.’ Nakhon Ratchasima is also important to Thai  History . All ranges of tourist attractions are available here that you need to take quite some time to visit all of them.

Locating a few hours away from  Bangkok  with easy transportation the province is very popular for tourists, especially in Khao Yai National  Park .

Nakhon Ratchasima is the biggest province in Thailand in term of space. To its greatness, there are 32 districts which are;  Mueang  Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Buri, Soeng Sang, Khong, Ban Lueam, Chakkarat, Chok Chai, Dan Khun Thot, Non Thai, Non Sung, Kham Sakaesaeng, Bua Yai, Prathai,  Pak Thong Chai , Phimai, Huai Thalaeng, Chum Phuang, Sung Noen, Kham Thale So, Sikhio,  Pak Chong , Nong Bun Mak, Kaeng Sanam Nang, Non Daeng, Wang Nam Khiao, Thepharak, Mueang Yang, Phra Thong Kham, Lam Thamenchai, Bua Lai, Sida

Nakhon Ratchasima, otherwise known as Khorat, is the largest northeastern province, and the inhabitants of the province are mainly engaged in  agricultural  activities, growing such diverse crops as rice, sugar cane, sesame, and fruit. There are more than 100 savings and agricultural cooperatives in the province, 35 irrigation projects, and 7,122 industrial factories. Most of the factories are rice mills, tapioca product manufacturers, and industrial factories. Historical ly, Khorat Province was an important area for thousands of years, first as the site of several ancient prehistoric communities and later as important outposts of the Dvaravati and Khmer Empires. Ruins of both Dvaravati and Khmer  Temple s are located across Khorat, particularly at Amphoe Sung Noen and Amphoe Phimai, the latter one of the most important provincial capitals of the Angkorian Empire. To this day, Khorat remains an important province and city, functioning as Northeastern Thailand’s main transportation hub and economic center. Finally, as Khorat’s Amphoe Pak Thong Chai is considered the spiritual home of the Thai silk weaving industry, those interested in sericulture will enjoy  Shopping  for some of the country’s best cloth..

Nakhon Ratchasima, generally known as Khorat, is Thailand’s largest province. Situated on Thailand’s sprawling northeastern plateau, approximately 260 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, the city itself serves as the gateway to the lower northeastern region. Covering an area that is mainly plateaus and mountainous terrain, Khorat has fascinating traditions, charming hospitality, splendid natural scenery and awesome historical sites, including Khao Yai, Thailand’s oldest  national park  and newest World Heritage site, and the Khmer temple at Phimai, an important provincial capital of the Angkor Empire.

 Nakhon Ratchasima and Khorat are interchangeable names for the same province and city.

 The train to Khorat passes through some great scenery, including a views of the enormous white Buddha figure at Wat Theppitak which rests on a thickly forested hillside.
