Secret Atlas takes small groups of just 12 passengers on cruises to Norway from the winter splendour of Tromsø to the Arctic wilderness of Svalbard , an archipelago of nine islands that sits halfway between mainland Norway and the north pole.

Expedition Cruises to Explore Svalbard During the Summer Months

Travelling in groups of 12 led by an expedition leader and expert guide means more time exploring ashore. There’s plenty of space on the Zodiac landing crafts, and you can experience the unique Arctic silence away from crowds. It’s one of the best places in the world to see polar bears in the wild and we’re frequently lucky enough to encounter walruses, Arctic foxes, and humpback whales too. You’ll also get to follow in the footsteps of great explorers, visit settlements, and grab a drink in one of the most northerly bars in the world.

Secret Atlas cruises to Svalbard take place between April and September, the early part of the season is the chance to see the archipelago emerge from the long winter, from mid-May, the 24-hr daylight arrives with more opportunities for wildlife watching, and the sea-ice open ups which makes it possible to reach more pats of the archipelago. But every month of the season offers a different experience.

All our cruises depart from Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Svalbard. There are daily flights to Longyearbyen from Oslo on Tromso, which take around three hours.

Tromso in Northern Norway

Tromso is city in northern Norway surrounded by Arctic wilderness, where locals and visitors can hike up mountains like Tromsdalstinden. It’s perfect for a city getaway with a sense of adventure, particularly in the winter months as its latitude of 70° north and relatively low levels of light pollution make it one of the best places in the world to witness the wonder of the aurora borealis, aka the northern lights.

As well as snowy mountains, you don’t have to travel far out of the city to see more stunning nature including beautiful fjords like crisp-blue waters of Ullsfjord where you’ll also find glaciers and unspoilt wilderness. Winter in Tromso is also a good time or whale watching, when the orcas (killer whales), and humpback whales in the fjords.

Our winter Norway cruise season takes visitors to Tromso, in the north. The city of Tromso is one of the best places in the world to witness the northern lights. It sits in an area known as the auroral oval and has a latitude of almost 70° north, and there’s also very little light pollution. Of course, we can’t guarantee sightings, but the probability of witnessing the aurora borealis aka northern lights is high on any given night.

The fjords surrounding Tromso offer a perfect place to witness the northern lights as there is little to no light pollution.

By day, our expedition micro-cruise will head north of the city, through beautiful fjords in search of orcas (killer whales). The waters surrounding Tromso are home to an abundance of orcas, and they spent 40 per cent of their time travelling, so there’s a good chance we’ll spot some. Smaller ships are less disruptive to them too, as they’re quieter than larger ships. We following strict rules laid out by The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO), Soto make sure our Norway cruises don’t harm wildlife. A winter cruise to Tromos also offers the opportunity to explore and hike in beautiful, remote villages.

As the sea ice retreats, our cruises can circumnavigate Spitsbergen, the largest of Svalbard’s nine islands for more opportunities for wilderness hikes and seeing stunning glaciers up close.

And taking a winter micro-expedition to Tromso in is the chance to witness the northern lights in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounding by frozen mountains and crystal clear fjords with little light pollution in the north of Norway. By day you could be hiking in beautiful remote villages, and whale watching in the fjords.

2. Smaller, more intimate and sustainable cruises

Our Norway cruises take just 12 guests, travelling as part of a small group offers an intimate, shared experienced with like-minded travellers  – while experiencing some of the most beautiful, unspoilt nature on Earth. Smaller vessels and tour groups also leave a much lower impact on the vital polar environments we visit.

Expedition micro cruises are less disruptive to the incredible wildlife we’re lucky enough to encounter too including the ‘King of the Arctic’  – the polar bear, as well as walruses, Arctic foxes, and a vast array of birdlife. We are a member of AECO and abide by strict rules when viewing wildlife.

3. Explore remote and rarely visited places

Our Norway cruises are all about exploring and we visit rarely visited places. It’s an enriching experience where you’ll discover remote and uninhabited places. Every cruise is led by an experienced expedition leader and expert guide, with deep knowledge of these Arctic destinations.

Every trip is a chance to follow in the footsteps of great explorers, discover historic remnants, experience life in little-known settlements, and go hiking in the polar wilderness where you’ll encounter huge glaciers, ancient rocks, fossils, and mountains.

4. Our cruises are a real adventure

We founded Secret Atlas to take you on an adventure. Feedback from our previous guests is that our cruises are more like a private adventure than a commercial cruise. Large commercial expedition vessels can now take up to 350, but we believe smaller is better.

Expedition micro-cruise vessels leave less of an impact on the environment, and they’re also more flexible. Part of the adventure is that we can change course depending on conditions, so we’re not bound by our itinerary and can adapt for the best chance for wildlife watching and exploring ashore. Smaller ships can also reach more remote places that larger ships can’t access like areas with shallow anchorages and narrow fjords. Travelling with just 12 guests means there’s no hanging around to get ashore, so we can maximise our time exploring.

Our expedition vessel is built for safe and comfortable Arctic exploration. They’re ice-strengthened for smooth voyages to polar regions and are equipped wth Zodiac landing craft exploring ashore. Inside, you can experience incredible scenery from the comfort of a spacious lounge, or venture onto a large deck to capture photographs and videos.

You’ll be welcomed aboard with a safety briefing on arrival, and our veteran crew includes a chef preparing three fresh meals a day – to keep you energised for your Arctic adventures. Enjoy comfortable, and much needed rest in the en-suite accommodation and there is also plenty of communal spaces for unwinding in the evenings.

The otherworldly, glacier-carved landscapes of Norway's Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean – of which Spitsbergen is the largest island – are home to the largest concentration of polar bears in the world… around 3,000 of them! Our small-ship cruise, "Arctic Allure: Spitsbergen and the Midnight Sun, takes you to explore the archipelago's jagged mountains, steep-sided valleys, sheer cliffs, fjords, calving glaciers that crackle and groan, and the remains of old whaling outposts and mining camps established by Norwegians, Americans and Russians over a century ago. Keep your eyes open for some of those polar bears… as well as bearded seals, blue and white whales, Arctic foxes, and Arctic moose.

  MS TROLLFJORD Flagship of Hurtigruten's Signature voyages, MS Trollfjord takes its name from a small but spectacular fjord in the Vesterålen archipelago. Freshly refurbished in 2023, MS Trollfjord is an homage both to Norwegian nature and our 130-year heritage sailing the Norwegian coast. Locally sourced natural materials such as wood and stone feature prominently throughout the ship’s furnishings, reflecting the beauty of the fjords we sail through. The style of décor is classic, timeless, and unique in our fleet. MS RICHARD WITH MS Richard With is named after Captain Richard With. His establishment of the Norwegian Coastal Express back in 1893 had an enormous impact on life along the Norwegian coast. In 2022, MS Richard With was upgraded to a greener hybrid ship. MS KONG HARALD Norway’s reigning monarch, a seasoned sailor, lends his name to this remarkable hybrid vessel. The vessel features a modern, Arctic-inspired interior. MS NORDNORGE Nord-Norge means the northern part of Norway, mostly situated north of the Arctic Circle. The interior décor is modern and Arctic-inspired. MS NORDKAPP MS Nordkapp is named after one of the highlights of the Hurtigruten voyage, the northernmost point of mainland Europe, the North Cape (71ºN). The ship features a modern, Arctic-inspired interior. MS POLARLYS Polarlys is Norwegian for `polar light´, and refers to the natural Arctic phenomenon we pursue in winter. The ship features a modern, Arctic-inspired interior. MS NORDLYS The name of this ship as well as the art, décor and colours employed aboard are all inspired by the Northern Lights. The delicate aesthetic creates a distinct and unique on-board ambience. MS MIDNATSOL One of our best-known ships, MS Midnatsol (previously MS Maud) is named after the Midnight Sun, the phenomenon that occurs in northern Norway every summer when the sun doesn’t set for 24 hours. The décor on board is inspired by Norway’s stunning nature, reflected in many of the pieces of Norwegian modern art on board. Her bright interiors are appointed in a classic Art Deco style. SPECIAL FEATURES: Sauna, fitness room, Explorer Lounge & Bar, 2 outdoor hot tubs, 3 restaurants (main dining Torget, Brygga bistro and à la carte Kysten), shop, lecture hall, observation deck.  

MS VESTERÅLEN MS Vesterålen is one of the oldest and smallest ships, named after an archipelago in Nordland country and the first Coastal Express steamship from 1893. Fresh and lightly refurbished in 2019 and again in 2022, MS Vesterålen has bright, informal public areas and lounges throughout. The last refurbishment included upgrading 32 outside cabins to Arctic Superior standard with double beds, rebuilding 4 cabins into 2 mini suites, upgrading the restaurant, the café, the reception area, and the gym, in addition to giving Trollfjord lounge a new look and feel.    On a journey with MS Vesterålen, we will have a "behind the scenes" focus where the guests will get an opportunity to get closer to the Hurtigruten heritage, emphasizing maritime operations, logistics and hotel operations. With a focus on edutainment and engaging activities, we will provide guests with an in-depth knowledge of the different departments and the interaction between them.   SPECIAL FEATURES: Panorama lounge & bar, smaller lounges in the front and back of the ship, café, 1 main restaurant, shop, fitness room, observation deck.

Our Journey Planners have designed this cruise to show you Norway’s awe-inspiring natural surroundings as summer turns to autumn, a time of year that’s renowned for the fruit harvest. Ulvik is ideally placed for sampling the local seasonal produce, from apple juice to cider and brandy, while a scenic cruise along Hardangerfjord will showcase orchard-covered valleys and mountains. Balmoral will also sail the picturesque Nordfjord, passing Hornelen – Europe’s highest sea cliff. There will be opportunities to admire the remarkable landscapes ashore too, during a visit to the Briksdal Glacier from Olden, accompanied by a local geologist; or on a boat tour from Haugesund.

Scenic Norwegian fjords

As you journey along the Norwegian Fjords aboard Balmoral , you will have a number of opportunities to witness spectacular mountains, deep fjords, and cascading waterfalls. The village of Ulvik, surrounded by tall mountains and lush landscapes, is well-known for its flourishing fruit orchards, and you are also perfectly placed to visit the awe-inspiring Vøringfossen waterfall from here, whose waters plunge over steep cliffs, providing a beautiful show of mist and spray that can be heard from far away, before it appears as you sail along Hardangerfjord. Join us on tours to experience the icy blue hues of Briksdal and Kjenndal Glaciers, as they creep down valleys nestled between contrasting green hills. You will also have the chance to experience sailing along Lysefjord, home to the extraordinary mountains of Preikstolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjeragbolten.

Embracing outdoor life

The concept of friluftsliv is ingrained in daily life in Norway, and encompasses spending time outdoors, connecting with nature by participating in various activities in the countryside. From Stavanger, join us on a hike to the famous mountain, Pulpit Rock (Preikstolen) where you'll experience a variety of natural landscapes en route to the plateau, where outstanding views across Lysefjord can be witnessed. In Ulvik, enjoy kayaking on Hardangerfjord, offering a unique perspective of the fjords and it surrounding landscape. When in Olden, do take an eco-friendly journey on E-Bike to discover its spectacular scenery as you cycle past cascading waterfalls and local farms.  

Taste the seasons

Autumn is harvest season in Norway, so we've perfectly time your cruise for you to witness the colourful red, blue, and orange delicacies from nature's larder. During October, the woodlands are filled with fresh, wild berries, while orchards are bursting with ripe pears, apples and cherries, and collecting them is a popular pastime for Norwegians. The region is known for producing some of the world's best ciders and apple juices due to the unique microclimate of the fjords, making it perfect for apple cultivation. Catch Your Own Crayfish

After speeding across the beautiful Nordfjord on a RIB ride to the crayfish pots, help your skipper draw them in before cooking them ashore and enjoying them with bread and wine.

Briksdal Glacier Hike with a Local Expert

This tour allows you to accompany a local expert graduate in geomorphology, who has worked as a glacier guide at the site, on a visit to view this famous glacier arm.

Syse Fruit Farm

Visit Syse Gard, a traditional family-run farm situated beside the Hardangerford. Gain an insight into the daily life and history on the farm, explore the orchard and sample produce such as apple juice, cider, and dried meats.

Hike to Pulpit Rock

After a coach journey, your hike begins at Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock. This dramatic natural rock formation has a 25m platform overlooking Lysefjord. Experience a variety of landscapes on your accent to this landmark where you can admire the views of the 26-mile-long fjord. After hiking back to the starting point, you will return to your awaiting ship.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat. 

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.
