Sun-EL Musician Drops AEDM, 11 track  EP

sun el musician tour

After releasing his mammoth 31 track album in 2020 entitled  To the World and Beyond  (which earned the artist over 50 million streams, nominations, and awards, and global press recognition) the momentum has not slowed down. South Africa’s beloved Afro-futuristic inter-galactic captain Sun-EL Musician has been hard at work diving deep into his past influences and future sounds and really homing in on defining what he believes to be a new genre  AEDM (African Electronic Dance Music) ,  which is now live as his latest musical offering.

“ African Electronic Dance Music , to me I would define it as not just a sound that designates a single genre but more of a sound that encompasses a style of African elements infused with EDM, but it’s a modern way of exporting the African Dance sound (House Music) to the rest of the world through giving it that African traditional elements of drums, rhythm, and culture,” shares Sun-EL Musician.

The 11 track  AEDM EP  is interspersed with some strong electronic/afro house instrumentals and some striking new driving tracks which show us that Sun-EL Musician is clearly carving out a lane of his own.

Look out for ‘Bestfriend’ featuring Msaki, ‘Higher’ featuring Simmy and ‘I Like It Anyway’ featuring Ami Faku which all hint at past success with fellow femme collaborators with whom he created award-winning and well-loved hits like ‘Ubomi Abumanga’, ‘Emkhaya’ and ‘Into Ingawe’, interspersed with some strong electronic/afro house instrumentals to see in the summer season.

Sun-EL Musician’s  AEDM EP   is now   available to stream or download here:   https://platoon.lnk.to/african-electronic-dance-music

Sun-EL Musician is a South African based producer and EL-World Music label owner (from the KwaZulu Natal Highlands) who with humility and grace, steadily carves out a reputation for not only having a magic touch with his unmistakable brand of Afro-House and electronic fusion but for constantly being on the forefront of the next African Music frontier.

Sun-El Musician: "I don’t come from an analogue background, it has always been about computers from the word go"

This South African producer is on a mission to spread his brand of EDM across the world, even inventing a subgenre along the way – African Electronic Dance Music

sun-el

With his latest album AEDM (African Electronic Dance Music), South African DJ and producer Sun-El Musician is on a mission to unite African sounds with global phenomenon that is EDM and help introduce some of his local sounds and vibes – and himself – to the world along the way.

Already a huge artist on his home soil, he collaborated with Black Coffee and landed a double-platinum debut album for Africa To The World and went on to be nominated for three major South African Music Awards. All this from producing with just a smattering of hardware – mic, monitors, interface and Mac – and a diverse set of plugins. Well, who needs more than that these days…

Tell us how you got into music.

“My name is Sanele Sithole aka Sun-El Musician, born in a small town called Mooi River (Midlands) KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. I’m an electronic DJ/producer, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur.

"The how and why? I was a student at the University of Kwazulu-Natal majoring in electronics and science. Being unsatisfied with how far away this decision had taken me from the music, my attention began to veer more towards the campus parties where I could immerse myself in the world I knew could only last a few hours, before I’d have to return to living by the book.

I have a very basic setup; I’m not one to have crazy things and just like my studio to be simple

"I saw the likes of DJ Tira, DJ Bongz and DJ Cindo among other DJs from Durban and that was the thing that made me realise that this is something that I want to do: to make people dance and feel good, and just make good music for people.

“After months of discontent I then decided to return home to spend time teaching myself how to produce music, with Africanism, Daft Punk, Atjazz, Calvin Harris and Charles Webster as my sonic guides. I then started gaining momentum in my home town and handing out my music to whoever would care to have a listen.

"The support grew unexpectedly and then people started to encourage me into making a DVD disc containing over 200 self-produced songs to Demor Music. Upon my arrival at Johannesburg I got to work with the likes of Bucie and that’s where I learnt a lot about production and then eventually I started my own thing with my current team, El World Music, and the rest, they say, is history.”

How did you get successful?

“Success means different things to different people. For me it was when I realised I was making music that resonated with people so that was more of a determining factor. When I started making a living of music was with my first single Akanamali, because a lot of gigs were then coming in.”

What is your production philosophy?

“Let your music be based on feeling and try not to be fixated on what you want to compose. You should just let it sort of lead you instead of trying to control it.”

When did you discover the computer music route to music production?

“Maybe about 15 years ago when I was with my younger brother. We started by doing mix matches where we just used house music instrumentals with RnB songs where we would try to mix and match those. Since I don’t come from an analogue background, it has always been about computers from the word go.

"It’s always been a thing for me ‘cause I’m fascinated by electronics so it was just very easy for me to get into it. It’s the flow of it, like everything is easy to save, unlike the analogue days where it was complex and time consuming because you had to render each file. Using a computer system just made more sense to me.”

Tell us about the gear in your studio.

“I have a very basic setup; I’m not one to have crazy things and just like my studio to be simple. So I have a 22’ Apple iMac with a controller keyboard , Focusrite interface, Adam A7X monitors and an AKG studio mic.”

What are your favourite plugins?

“Spectrasonics Trilogy – For my bass synths , it has crazy forms of variations. reFX Nexus – I love using this on my piano or instrumental hooks for my dance sections in my songs. Rob Papen Albino – I use this for my pads, which I love to be so warm and it’s nice to control with the cutoff to open and close. Sonata – I use this for my chords; it has different sounds and it’s very unique. u-he Hive – I use this for my lead synths.”

I use samples to guide me while I play keys on top, so I always work around the sample

How do you tend to start a track?

“I have so many ways. Sometimes it could start with a melody, from me playing the piano just finding an emotion, or I just look for a sample that I would probably reverse and chop it up for it to make sense melodically, or I could start it off with drums. There is usually no specific structure but those are some of the main processes.”

How do you know when a track’s done?

“I don’t think you can ever finish a track! I feel there is always room to improve or to chop more parts off. Then it’s just about the people around you. I usually invite friends over or send it to the people I work with. If it’s a collaboration I would pass it on to them just to see how they feel about it and if they are happy, then yeah! But with me, I’m never happy because I always feel I can do better.”

Do you have any production tricks?

“Using a sample to guide me while I play keys on top of it, so I always work around the sample, whether it be enhancing it or playing more musical hooks on top of it.

What’s on your gear wishlist?

“I’m still in the learning phase but want to get some more gear, maybe a hardware rack with reverbs, delays and compressors.”

Daft Punk's Homework turns 25: discover the gear and production techniques behind the sound

Which historic track do you wish that you’d produced?

“I’d say Daft Punk’s Around The World because it feels like it’s very simple. The elements used are very minimal yet very impactful. I like simplicity.”

What advice do you have for playing out live or DJing?

“Firstly you need to plan your sets and how you are going to present your music. Never go with the previous DJ’s mood or the way they presented or the type of songs they played. Make sure you are able to tell your own story.”

And studio advice?

“Allow your feelings to guide you and your gut feeling to lead you. Be experimental and always try new ways of doing things.”

Any more general advice?

“Get some background knowledge on the music business, because it’s important to understand that side of things.”

What do you have planned?

“I‘m exploring other parts of music, expanding my fanbase, and doing more collaborative work in different parts of the world. Maybe one day I’ll make a movie about my journey. Who knows? But for sure I’ll be making more music.”

LISTENER-POWERED KEXP – WHERE THE MUSIC MATTERS

Sun-El Musician tour might be coming as he is considering doing something with friends

South African disc jockey, music producer, and songwriter Sanele Tresure Sithole, known professionally as Sun-El Musician, is considering doing a tour titled “Sun-El Musician and Friends Tour”.

He posted these news on his Facebook account shortly after a tweet by a fan went viral, the fan was humbly requesting him to host a one man show concert.

People want to see him on stage with other artists that he has worked with such as Simmy , Azana , Msaki and and his artists from El World Music .

For Sun El Musician to host his concert where mostly it’s his music playing and only artists that he featured on all his song. A picnic-vibe type of concert within the next 5 years. I pray it’s not too much to ask Lord & Sun El. The fan tweeted.

He responded by saying;

I’ve been receiving a lot of love from this tweet! What do you guys think??

Many of his fans agree that he needs to host his own concert and that’s how the tour idea was born. Will he give people what they want? Only time will tell!

EP Review: Sun-El Musician – AEDM (African Electronic Dance Music)

Ryan Middleton • Nov 2, 2021

sun el musician tour

South African artist Sun-El Musician has released his new EP AEDM (African Electronic Dance Music) . The EP, which feels like an album at 11-tracks and an hour of runtime, is a slow burner of melodic house music that feels right at home in South Africa and the global music community.

The title is about not just what is being created in Africa, but about taking that sound to the rest of the world.

“ African Electronic Dance Music , to me I would define it as not just a sound that designates a single genre but more of a sound that encompasses a style of African elements infused with EDM,” explains Sun-El Musician, “but it’s a modern way of exporting the African Dance sound (House Music) to the rest of the world through giving it that African traditional elements of drums, rhythm, and culture.”

The KwaZulu Natal native has features from the likes of Simmy, Bholoja, Msaki and Ami Faku on the project. Vocals mix together with steady percussion and soft melodies in a whispering blend of electronic music. The songs can be a bit slow at times, but they draw you into their hypnotic daze. The project follows his album To The World & Beyond released not even a year ago. Pick up AEDM here .

Due out July 26 (via EMI Australia), Ask That God is led by the first singles “ Changes ” and “Music On The Radio;” both are accompanied with sparkling, Michael Maxxis-helmed music videos that capture Steele and Littlemore in all their astral-wizardry.

Ask That God is the follow-up to 2016’s Two Vines , which logged at week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums and featured contributions from Fleetwood Mac’s  Lindsey Buckingham , Wendy Melvoin from Prince’s Revolution band and two members of David Bowie’s  Blackstar  band, pianist Henry Hey and bassist Tim Lefebvre.

To build the buzz, Empire of the Sun today shared behind the scenes footage from the “Changes” music video.

“ Ask That God is an album we searched for and were thankfully blessed with. We are nothing more than conduits, gathering experience and finding what is meant for the Empire to find,” explains Steele.

Since their breakthrough debut album from 2008, Walking On A Dream, which housed the title track and “We Are The People,” Empire of the Sun has collected eight ARIA Awards (including four at the 2009 ceremony), two APRA Music Awards, an APRA Billions Award , and collected 7.6 billion streams, according to EMI.

Littlemore hinted at some hidden gems in an interview with Billboard   in 2021 . “There’s a lot of great music in the bag. I’m hoping that will see the light of day,” Littlemore told this reporter. “I have great faith. I don’t feel we have exhausted that well by any stretch. The name still has a lot of goodwill. I really hope we can come together and finish it.”

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

sun el musician tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

sun el musician tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

sun el musician tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

sun el musician tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Uplifting the Sun Bowl can uplift all of El Paso: Jorge Vazquez

UTEP President Heather Wilson, in front of an image of the 46,000-seat Sun Bowl, May 24, 2024 urges El Paso County taxpayers and County Commissioners to support $99 million in proposed Sun Bowl upgrades to lure big concerts.

Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and Luke Combs are just a few A-list artists who are unlikely to host a concert in El Paso anytime soon.

Why? El Paso doesn’t have a venue that can accommodate them.

Our largest venues — the Don Haskins Center, Plaza Theater, Abraham Chavez Theater, and even the up-and-coming amphitheater that will replace Cohen Stadium — are just too small to accommodate the 25,000-plus fans these shows typically attract.

Except, that is, for the Sun Bowl Stadium.

More: UTEP president asks taxpayers to support $99M Sun Bowl upgrades to attract major concerts

The iconic El Paso venue can easily seat 46,000 attendees. But as it stands, the Sun Bowl can’t attract the likes of Beyonce, whose shows demand features that a stadium built in 1963 cannot provide.

But with some investment, it can once again be a gamechanger for all of us, infusing our community with the energy and vibrancy that a world-class concert scene provides.

This is why UTEP has proposed to ‘uplift’ the Sun Bowl Stadium through the El Paso County’s Capital Improvement Bond. If the $99 million project is placed on the bond, the project will go to voters this November.

My job at UTEP is to use my more than 24 years of industry experience to bring artists to the Don Haskins and Sun Bowl Stadium. I’ve worked with One Direction, RBD, Rolling Stones, and Motley Crue, among many others. But I think we can do more to attract even better stadium acts. In fact, I know we can.

When I shared with a major live entertainment company our proposal to uplift the Sun Bowl Stadium, they called it a “gamechanger.” They predicted we will seal the deal on more — and better — artists coming to El Paso with the upgrades.

In the show business industry, we like to say, “Every minute costs money.” Production companies are looking for venues where they can save money — not spend more — and the changes we are proposing would give the Sun Bowl a competitive edge.

I’m sorry to say but right now, the Sun Bowl is not competitive.

More: What's in store for the 2024 Texas Democratic Party Convention in El Paso this week?

The stadium’s electrical capabilities can’t accommodate the biggest and most elaborate shows, and semi-trucks with concert equipment can’t easily fit into the stadium to quickly load-in and load-out.

As a result, tours often must rent expensive add-ons like generators and forklifts and hire more stagehand labor for setup and teardown. It’s issues like these that make putting on a show at the Sun Bowl a less attractive investment.

A widened tunnel entrance and upgraded electrical capabilities could easily fix this, and a capital bond is the best way to get it done.

The Sun Bowl Stadium sits empty for most of the year, representing a lost opportunity to bring in new revenue from travel, food and drinks, hotel stays, and all the other costs that people incur when attending concerts. In fact, UTEP officials estimate that an improved Sun Bowl could result in $2.06 billion in economic impact over the next 30 years; it also could generate hundreds of new jobs.

What are we waiting for?

This is El Paso’s venue. Let’s make it something we can be proud of and that we all can enjoy.

Jorge Vazquez is the executive director of Special Events at UTEP.
