It's not permitted anywhere indoors including balconies but only in designated smoking areas.

Definitely no vaping in your cabin. You might not set off the smoke alarm, but the lingering smell will be a give away. The likelihood is that your steward will report you, and you will be given a one time warning.

Same applies to outer decks. Vaping in smoking areas only.

You will not trigger any alarms, at least based on my many experiences. There very well could be a lingering smell if you are vaping too much. If I'm in a balcony room, I blow out into the balcony. If I'm in an Oceanview or Inside, I do one of two things. I usually bring a "smoke buddie" which you blow through and it eliminates any smoke and smell from the get go. When I forget to take mine, then I would generally blow into the shower. However, regardless of room type, I often go up on deck somewhere above the Lido to do it a lot as well as that has it's own enjoyment.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

p and o cruises vaping

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

p and o cruises vaping

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

p and o cruises vaping

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

p and o cruises vaping

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

You may also like: A Cruise Glossary: Cruise Terms You Should Know

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

p and o cruises vaping

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Remember I mentioned that one cruise line has a couple of non-smoking cruise ships? It’s luxury cruise line Seabourn. They operate two expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit , that are completely non-smoking.

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

Can You Bring a Vape on a Cruise?  (2024)

You may be wondering if you can bring a vape on a cruise and, if so, where you can smoke it.

The short answer is yes, you can bring a vape on a cruise, but there are some restrictions as to where you can use it and which types you can take if you smoke weed pen .

Can You Bring a Vape on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ship policies regarding vapes and e-cigarettes vary, so it is important to check with your specific cruise line before packing your vape. That being said, most cruises allow passengers to bring personal vape pens, cartridges, and oils on board.

However, as you might expect, there are restrictions on certain types of weed / CDB-related vapes.

This doesn’t stop some people from still trying to sneak them on board, and we have a look at how ways they might do this.

This post will also cover the rules and regulations around bringing and using vapes on cruises.

Cruise Lines Policies for Vaping

Even though the technology and popularity of e-cigarettes and vaping have changed dramatically over the last 10 years, most cruise lines’ typical rules and regulations for vaping on a cruise ship are the same as smoking.

Most cruise lines keep all interior public spaces smoke-free, including any vaping.

Where Can You Vape on a Cruise Ship?

You will only be allowed to vape in designated smoking areas for most cruise lines.  These are often outside and sometimes in the casinos.

Expect to see visible signage indicating smoking areas.

Most cruise lines will not allow you to vape in your stateroom or even on the balcony.

Can you Vape on a Cruise Balcony?

For most cruise lines, you will not be allowed to vape from your balcony.  This usually goes hand in hand with not being allowed to vape from your stateroom, and there can be substantial fines for doing so.

Cruise lines that do not allow vaping from staterooms on balconies include:

  • Carnival Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Norwegian Cruise Line (exc. Garden Villa Suites)
  • Disney Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • MSC cruises
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Holland America
  • Viking Cruises

Which Cruise Lines Allow Vaping in Staterooms and Balconies?

Of the main cruise lines, there are three plus a couple of smaller lines that allow passengers to vape in their staterooms:

  • Aida Cruises
  • Costa Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • TUI Cruises

Just because the above cruise lines allow vaping on balcony, doesn’t mean they allow cigarettes. Here we have covered the few cruise lines that allow smoking on balconies .

Other cruise lines ban vaping in all rooms and even balconies.  If you are caught smoking, expect to be fined and possibly further penalties.

Why Can’t People Vape From Cruise Balconies?

Vapes are essentially treated as cigarettes and cigars because they are a fire hazard and a litter nuisance when people discard them.

Although vaping is safer and there’s no associated litter, the smoke and smell of the smoke could drift to a fair few other balconies and affect other passengers’ experiences if they don’t like it.

Can you Bring Vapes on Carnival Cruise?

Vape on Carninval?

You can take a nicotine vape pen on a Carnival cruise ship and use it within the designated smoking areas.

Vaping rules on Carnival cruises are the same as those for smoking cigarettes and cigars.

Can You Vape on Carnival Cruise Balcony?

Vaping is not allowed on Carnival cruise balconies.

Carnival state:

” All staterooms and suite accommodations, including outside balconies, are NON-SMOKING. “ Carnival Cruise

If caught vaping in your stateroom or balcony, you could be fined $500.

There’s also the possibility they could disembark you and all guests staying in the stateroom for violating the policy and ban you from sailing with them again.

Why You Can’t Vape In My Carnival State Room?

Vapes and all e-cigarettes are treated the same combustion cigars and cigarettes people smoke, which is a potential fire hazard that could ultimately sink a cruise ship .

Also, if passengers were freely permitted to vape in their staterooms, more people would likely be trying to vape prohibited substances.

Where Can You Vape on a Carnival Cruise?

Carnival cruise has very helpfully created a list of all ships in the fleet and the designated smoking areas for almost everyone.

Check out where you can vape on each Carnival cruise ship here .

There is no differentiation between smoking cigarettes and cigars or e-cigarettes so you will only be able to use a vaporizer in the designated smoking areas.

Typically on a Carnival Cruise, you can vape in:

  • Designated outdoor deck areas
  • Casino when seated and playing

Can you Bring a Vape on Royal Caribbean?

Vape on Royal Caribbean?

Royal Caribbean ships are designated as no smoking; however, you are allowed to take a vape on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but you are only allowed to use it in designated smoking areas.

The Royal Caribbean vape policy does not distinguish between smoking cigarettes and any form of e-cigarette or vaping in its smoking policy.

“Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are only permitted within the designated smoking areas.” Royal Caribbean Vaping Policy

Vaping areas include:

  • Designated smoking outdoor areas
  • Designated smoking areas in the Casino Royale*

Casino Royal smoking rules vary from the above if your ship departs from China and Hong Kong (no non-smoking areas) and Australia and the United Kingdom (no smoking in casinos at all).

Visible signage will be posted within all the above areas where vaping is permitted.

Non-vaping areas include:

  • Outdoor areas near restricted areas
  • Food venues
  • Kids play areas
  • Swimming pool areas

No vaping is allowed in Central Park or the Boardwalk areas on Oasis Class ships.

No Vaping poolside on Royal Caribbean

Can You Vape on Royal Caribbean Stateroom Balcony

There is no vaping allowed on stateroom balconies of any class.

If you are caught vaping in your cabin or balcony, you face a fine of $250.

Check the latest Royal Caribbean Smoking Policy here .   The policy was last updated in 2013; since then, e-cigarette, especially vaping technology, have significantly advanced, but they’re still treated the same as cigarettes.

Can You Vape Weed on Royal Caribbean?

Delta 8 Cartridge

All CBD oils and products are prohibited items on a Royal Caribbean cruise and therefore not allowed onboard.

How do You Pack a Vape and Liquids on a Cruise

Some vapes contain lithium-ion batteries, which are classed as hazardous materials by the US Department of Transportation. Although they are allowed on cruise ships, it’s best to pack them as safely as possible as you would going on a plane.

Therefore you will need to pack your vape in your carry-on luggage and not in your checked luggage.

You should also ensure that your vape is turned off and empty of any liquid before going through security.

Remove the battery and, along with spares, pack them in a designated case or plastic bags to prevent any risk of them short-circuiting.

As for the liquids, you are limited to bringing up to 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in your carry-on luggage.

These must be placed in a clear, sealable plastic baggie and presented to security along with your other liquids.

Ideally, pack your juices in plastic bottles to avoid any risk of breakages.

Can You Vape Abroad?

Check the local laws before you travel, and be mindful of where you can and cannot vape when you visit ports.  In many countries, all electronic cigarettes are illegal, and punishments can be severe.

Countries such as Brazil, India, Singapore, and Uruguay.

Even in Canada (at the time of writing), all forms of e-cigarettes are technically illegal to sell. However, it is largely unenforced.

You can find more information on the worldwide regulation of e-cigarettes wiki page here .

Can you Smoke Weed Vapes on Cruises?

Whereas some states in America have legalized marijuana, it is still illegal under federal law, which is what cruise lines have to follow.

Marijuana use, including in vape, is not allowed on cruises that depart from U.S. ports.  You also cannot bring marijuana on a cruise ship if the cruise stops in a U.S. port, even if the ship is registered in a country where marijuana is legal, and the port is in a state where it’s legal.

How to Sneak a Vape on a Cruise

If you are looking to sneak a vape pen or cartridges on a cruise, you are likely trying to sneak a prohibited substance or item onboard, such as a weed or delta 8 vapes .

While we advise not to do this,  as it can lead to severe penalties if caught, here are some ways people have attempted to hide vapes on a cruise:

Hiding it: This includes hiding it in luggage, clothes, or even body cavities (you know where!).  Be aware that security will check all items and may use sniffer dogs, although generally, the dogs’ priority is for explosives.

Mixing: Nicotine vape pens and cartridges are allowed on cruises, so some people mix their weeds carts in amongst them.

Fruit Smelling: When using a weed vape, although the smell is not as strong as smoking, some people have attempted to cover dispel any possibility of arousing suspicion by using fruit-smelling pens.

If you sneak a vape onboard, you might also be interested in how to get away with smoking on a cruise .

Consequences

As tempting as it may be to sneak an illegal substance on board, it’s worth also remembering the consequences that could result in your vapes being confiscated and possibly being kicked off the ship and or reporting you to the police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy e-cigarettes or vaping products on board a cruise ship.

No, you cannot buy vape products on cruise ships. You may be able to buy vape products in ports of call, subject to the rules of the country you are visiting.

You can take as much as you like onboard, subject to other regulations; for example, general liquid limits will also apply to oils.

Do Vapes go off in Metal Detectors?

If your vape is made of metal, it will set off a metal detector.  However, disposable plastic vape pens and cartridges are available, and these would avoid detection.

Can a Drug Dog Smell a Vape Pen and Carts?

A trained drug dog could smell a prohibited vape pen or cartridge.  The question is whether the security dogs are trained to pick up every drug sent or whether they are trained to sniff out more lethal substances like explosive materials.

Can you be Fined for Vaping on a Cruise?

You can be fined for vaping on a cruise.  If caught vaping in a Carnival or Royal Caribbean stateroom, you can be fined $500 and $250, respectively.

You could also face further penalties and put guests in the same room at risk of being disembarked.

Answered: Can You Smoke or Vape on a Cruise? (And More Questions)

Wanting to light up while on your cruise? It’s not as easy as simply having a smoke wherever you please. At sea, fire is by far the biggest danger to the ship, so cruise lines are serious about policies surrounding cigarettes and vaping. That means there are a number of rules that you’ll need to know about.

The good news is that smoking is allowed on cruises, so you don’t have go without. Still, if you’re one of the millions who smoke, here’s what you need to know about doing it on the cruise ship.

Can You Smoke While on a Cruise?

p and o cruises vaping

First things first, if you want to smoke on your cruise, then yes, it is allowed. This includes cigarettes, cigars, and vaping. However, it’s not as simple as just lighting up wherever you want. Cruise lines have strict rules surrounding smoking for the safety of the ship and the comfort of all guests who may not want to smell cigarette smoke (more details on this below)

But if you’re someone who wants to have a smoke, rest assured that it is allowed. In fact, some cruise ships even offer cigar lounges for those who like a puff.

What Are the Rules Around Smoking Onboard?

p and o cruises vaping

As mentioned, the cruise lines have a number of restrictions on smoking aboard the ship. This is all designed to keep other passengers from being bothered by the smell and to keep smoking safer from creating a fire.

Smokers are allowed to light up only in designated areas around the ship . Generally this will be an open-air deck where boxes will be provided for disposing of cigarette butts. As well, smoking is generally allowed in casinos , though some ships may have non-smoking sections.

That said, large portions of the ship are off-limits to smoking . This includes all public areas like the theater, restaurants, and even most outdoor areas of the ship. As well, you aren’t allowed to smoke in the cabin or on a balcony should you have one.

In other words, it may be a big ship, but only a small portion is actually available for smoking.

What’s the Smoking Age on a Cruise?

If you are sailing from the United States, then you should know that cruise lines follow federal law regarding the legal age to smoke . That means you will need to be 21 years old to smoke.

However, if sailing from other countries or visiting ports off the ship, then you are subject to the rules of that country. So if you visit a country where the legal age to smoke is lower, you’ll be able to smoke while in port.

Can You Vape on the Ship?

Technology has seemed to touch everything in our lives, and that even includes smoking. These days vaping is extremely popular as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

You should know that vaping is allowed on cruise ships. It does, however, follow the same rules as smoking cigarettes or cigars. Vaping is only allowed in certain areas on the ship and never in your cabin or on your balcony.

What Happens if I am Caught Smoking in my Cabin?

p and o cruises vaping

Smoking in your cabin — including on the balcony — is a big “no-no” on a cruise. All the lines have explicit rules against it. This is for a couple of reasons. For one, no one wants to stay in a cabin after a previous occupant smoked heavily.

More importantly, however, the risk of starting a fire. All it takes is one unattended cigarette or a flick of hot ash to accidentally create a fire on the ship while at sea. The risk is simply too great, even if smoking on a balcony.

If caught smoking, expect a fee. Major lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean assess a “cleaning fee” if you violate the policy. This ranges in amount from $250 to $500. Just stick to the designated areas and you have nothing to worry about.

Are Cigarettes Sold on the Cruise?

If you want to stock up on cigarettes, a cruise ship is a pretty good place to do so. Duty-free shopping is a big deal on a cruise , and that means you can buy vices like alcohol by the bottle and cigarettes by the carton. The prices here are usually pretty good as the taxes and fees normally seen on land don’t apply.

It’s typical that any alcohol bought in duty free shops will be packaged and then delivered to your cabin on the last night of the cruise. While we’ve never purchased cigarettes on a cruise, it’s our understanding that they can be subject to similar rules.

As Royal Caribbean shares on their site : “Duty free items purchased onboard can be taken to your room and enjoyed during your vacation. However, duty free alcohol and in some areas cigarettes will be delivered on the final day or morning of your voyage.”

If they are held, you can always purchase packs while in port if you run low to smoke during the cruise.

Also, reading review of the ship and view that security are quite lax, are they fairly tolerant about vaping ? I'm not talking about in restaurants but can I just vape on any deck say?

News Release

Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line , the most popular cruise line in the world.

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line , the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises . In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line , which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," said Weinstein. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific 's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line . "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests. The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features. P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival's loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region."

"Over the coming months, we will find ways to celebrate and honor P&O Cruises Australia – a valued part of our legacy and an important contributor to the tourism industry in the South Pacific ," said Weinstein. "We value the connection our P&O Cruises Australia guests, employees, travel advisor partners, public officials and destinations have with our company and are committed to building on this association moving forward as Carnival."

Travel plans in disarray as P&O Cruises retires iconic Pacific Explorer

Jane and John Newson, in their 70s, smiles at the camera.

For Jane Newson, taking a cruise every year has been her chance to see the world when other options were too expensive.

For months, she's been saving for a much-anticipated trip next year from Auckland to Tonga aboard the P&O Pacific Explorer.

She would be joined by her partner and some of her closest friends, including two who are nearing their 80th birthdays.

"It is lovely to be away for a week and not to have to do any of the things you do at home," she said.

Jane and John Newson pose sitting down, smiling, on a cruise ship, with ocean in the background.

"[These trips] offer a fantastic opportunity for people to cruise that don't have high incomes."

But on Tuesday, Ms Newson received an email advising her cruise had been cancelled, hours after P&O announced it was retiring the Explorer and folding operations into its parent company Carnival Cruises .

"It's a shame, such a shame, and we are all so disappointed, especially because there was six of us going," she said.

Social media has also been flooded with comments from disillusioned cruise ship passengers who had planned to take trips onboard the Pacific Explorer next year, while others have lamented the loss of the brand after 90 years on the water.

For Caitlin Dennis, the iconic cruise company shaped her life.

She took her first cruise onboard a P&O ship when she was 16 and would later go on to work on several cruise ship companies as a dancer and singer.

"It's a really sad loss to the industry and to the wider public," Ms Dennis said.

"That first cruise inspired me to go and seek out a career on a ship and I know a lot of other entertainers that work on that ship are going to be devastated about it."

A sign of things to come

The Pacific Explorer, which travels through Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and is known affectionately as "Dora" among the cruise community, will be retired on March 2 next year.

P&O's larger cruise ships, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure will be rebranded and transferred to the Carnival Cruise Line fleet, along with their workforces.

P&O Cruises Australia issued its surprise notice to customers on Tuesday.

"As a result, all itineraries on Pacific Explorer scheduled to sail after 2nd March 2025 are being cancelled," it said.

"If you are booked on one of these itineraries you will be contacted by guest services in the coming days with refund details.

"We are all immensely proud of P&O Cruises Australia's 90-year heritage of dedicated operations in the region, and Carnival Cruise Line are honoured to carry forward its storied legacy and continue to deliver the same onboard experiences and itineraries."

The side of a large white cruise ship with a skyscraper in the background.

Carnival CEO Josh Weinstein said in a statement that the decision to retire the Explorer was made due to the South Pacific's "small population" as well as "significantly higher operating and regulatory costs".

The senior lecturer in tourism management at the University of South Australia, Freya Higgins-Desbiolles, said the cruise ship industry appeared to be moving away from the smaller cruise liners of 2,000 passengers.

This year the world's biggest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, was launched by Royal Caribbean International. It can take 7,600 passengers, almost four times the capacity of the Pacific Explorer.

Aerial shot of the Icon of the Seas, with a tangle of colourful waterslides at the back.

"The major cruise companies are all moving towards 'mega-ships' so this could be the end of cruise companies like P&O that have a national character and serve a particular market," Professor Higgins-Desbiolles said.

"They are decommissioning and part of the reasoning is the environmental consciousness of passengers. They want to be more environmentally responsive to changing technology."

She said the cruise industry was also still recovering from the global pandemic, with high operating costs and port fees impacting on their bottom line.

The Explorer brought in tens of thousands of tourists to several Australian towns, including Airlie Beach and Cairns, on day trips.

Professor Higgins-Desbiolles said there will be fears about the effect on local economies.

A big white cruise ship several stories high approaches the wharf in Cairns

"Some of the regional destinations will be wondering how the change in itinerary will impact on them and we won't know that straight away," she said.

"Places like Cairns, Airlie Beach and Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln could all be affected."

Queensland Tourism Minister Michael Healy said he was "surprised" by Tuesday's announcement and there may be "some impact" on coastal communities, where the Pacific Explorer docks.

Headshot of Queensland's Tourism Minister Michael Healy.

"I have had correspondence from the company talking about strategic alignment and I look forward to investigating that," Mr Healy said.

A spokeswoman for Carnival Australia told the ABC no-one from the company was available for an interview but did say "thousands" of passengers would receive refunds for cancelled Pacific Explorer trips.

Customers who had cruises booked on the Explorer after March 2 2025 have the option of a refund or credit for Carnival with extra onboard spending money.

Carnival Corp to fold P&O Cruises Australia brand into Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Corp. will fold P&O Cruises Australia into Carnival Cruise Line next year.

  • Other Carnival Corp. brands include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.
  • The change does not affect Carnival Corp.’s England-based P&O Cruises, which is a separate brand.

The cruise line operator will retire the P&O Cruises Australia brand in March 2025, the company announced Monday.

"Despite increasing Carnival Cruise Line's capacity by almost 25% since 2019 including transferring three ships from Costa Cruises, guest demand remains incredibly strong so we're leveraging our scale in an even more meaningful way by absorbing an entire brand into the world's most popular cruise line," Carnival Corp. CEO Josh Weinstein said in a news release .

Other Carnival Corp. brands include Holland America Line , Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Carnival Cruise Line will constitute around 35% of the company’s worldwide capacity when the transition is finished, up from 29% in 2019. P&O’s Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will sail for Carnival following a rebrand, while Pacific Explorer will leave the fleet in February.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," Weinstein continued. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region.”

A spokesperson for the company told USA TODAY the integration "will unfortunately result in some staffing reductions, and we are notifying employees," though they did not share specific numbers. "We also expect to have most members of the P&O Australia shipboard team redeployed to work for Carnival Cruise Line or our six other cruise lines operating in the region," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Following the change, Carnival will have four ships sailing in the market, including Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa. The company said guests will be contacted “in the coming days” about any changes to future cruises because of the consolidation. Current itineraries will sail as scheduled.

Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates

"We look forward to building on the history and heritage of P&O Cruises Australia by bringing some of our innovations to more cruise guests in the region," Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy added in the release. "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests.”

The change does not affect Carnival Corp.’s England-based P&O Cruises, which is a separate brand. The company also recently announced that Carnival Cruise Line will add two new Excel-class ships in 2027 and 2028.

  • Carnival ( NYSE: CCL ) ( NYSE: CUK ) to phase out the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line in 2025, it said Monday after-market.
  • This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line, the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival ( CCL ) global portfolio.
  • The move will also result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021.
  • In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.
  • In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's ( CCL ) global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

p and o cruises vaping

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

p and o cruises vaping

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

p and o cruises vaping

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

p and o cruises vaping

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

p and o cruises vaping

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

p and o cruises vaping

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

p and o cruises vaping

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
