Sameera was a brilliant tour guide and was very knowledgeable about all the different places we visited in Sri Lanka. Amazing itinerary! Mean was great! Can’t wait to do another intro tour in the future.
The tour was perfect for my needs. Day in Kandy a bit of a muddle and wash out. Hotel to far out of town and no choice for food but the hotel and whilst ok not great. Prefer to Sri Lankan food. Amba estate amazing. Hotel J in Negombo and Unawatuna little more than a hostel Didn’t like at all. Same group as Jetwing and they are nice hotels. Guide very knowledgable and friendly. Not great value for money would have been better without using hotel j

"I went in late February to early March. I loved the organization and the planning of the tour. We saw so much in so little time in different settings from villages, temples, beaches and watching local artisans. Udi was a great tour guide, always available and the life of the party. He is very approachable when asking for advice on where to go, how much to tip and how to get there. I personally wished there was more time spent in columbo and near galle fort. The only thing I would change is for the tour to end in a location close to the airport as the last location mirissa is about a 2.5 to 3 hour cab ride to the main airport in columbo.

What to Eat In Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers a variety of interesting things from seafood to sweet delicacies that will satisfy your taste buds. The main Sri Lankan food attractions include:

Rice and curry always work out fine : The Sri Lankan staple food seems to be rice and a delicious bowl of curry. The curry is made with a host of spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, saffron, chilli, mustard seeds, coriander and curry leaves. Try home-cooked rice and curry (daal, pumpkin, eggplant, chicken, fish, carrot, beetroot, jackfruit, Asiatic pennywort, etc.); nothing can beat that.

Sri Lankan version of pancakes : Made from fermented rice flour, coconut water and milk, these thin Sri Lankan pancakes called hoppers are fried in a small wok and swirled to get the bowl-shaped crispy edges. The trick with this version comes when an egg is cracked over the pancake.

Dutch Burgher Lamprais : The Lamprais is a combination of meat, rice and sambol chilli sauce which is wrapped in a banana leaf and then steamed. Inside the rice is meat curry, meat balls, paste and or vegetable infused with cardamom, cinnamon and clove. This Dutch styled food is a perfect snack-on-the go item while enjoying your Sri Lanka package.

Care for some sour fish curry? The Fish Ambul Thiyal is a dish worth trying out. Fish meat cut into cubes is sautéed along with spices and dried goraka, the fruit responsible for the sour flavour. The fish curry is a dry dish with all the ingredients cooked in water until the liquid reduces significantly. This coats each cube of fish with an excellent mixture of spices.

A coconut side-dip : The coconut sambol is fresh coconut relish made by simply blending in finely grated coconut, dried whole chillies, red onions, lime juice and salt. Its specialty lies in its versatility. The dish is compatible with any food, be it bread, roti, hoppers or just eat it as it is.

Enjoy these delicious food items and many more while exploring the best places to visit in Sri Lanka.

After being invited to bat first, Sri Lanka made a steady start but lost two wickets in the fourth over as Josh Little claimed a quickfire double breakthrough, with Kusal Mendis followed back to the pavilion by namesake Kamindu.

Captain Wanindu Hasaranga (26) and Shanaka (23) made starts, but Ireland’s attack remained disciplined, and Sri Lanka were wobbling on 125 for seven when the latter fell to Barry McCarthy (2/31).

Angelo Mathews called on all his experience with an unbeaten 32 to steer his side to a competitive total of 163/8 in their 20 overs. Barry McCarthy (2/31) and Josh Little (2/45) claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Ireland started off brightly, with Andy Balbirnie (16) and Paul Stirling (21) both falling with the score on 39. Hasaranga and Shanaka helped disrupt Ireland’s momentum in the middle overs. Curtis Campher top-scored with a run-a-ball 26, but Ireland ultimately fell short, bowled out for 122 in 18.2 overs to lose by 41 runs. Shanaka wrapped it up, finishing with four for 23 from 3.2 overs. Maheesh Theekshana (2/41) and Hasaranga (2/40) also picked up two wickets each. (Agencies)

  • Chief scores :

Sri Lanka 163/8 in 20 overs (A. Mathews 32 n.o., W. Hasaranga 26, D. Shanaka 23; B. McCarthy 2/31, J. Little 2/45)

Ireland 122 all out in 18.2 overs (C. Campher 26, P. Stirling 21; D. Shanaka 4/23, M. Theekshana 2/41, W. Hasaranga 2/40)

tour to sri lanka

Intrepid Travel , world leader in responsible travel, is joining forces with the Market Development Facility (MDF), an Australian Government funded program that promotes sustainable economic development across diverse sectors, to support female empowerment through training and career development in the traditionally male dominated Sri Lankan tourism sector.

The partnership will aim to build capacity for female suppliers to become more market ready and create a pipeline for employment as trip leaders. Intrepid currently employs four female trip leaders in a total pool of 30 in Sri Lanka and has committed to increasing female representation by 40-50% by 2025.

Women’s participation in the country’s travel and tourism industry is low, with estimates suggesting that just 10% of the workforce comprises women, while female ownership of SMEs is projected to be around just 25% nationally .

In addition, women have not historically been a target market for tour operators in the country, so the partnership will seek to expand the number of experiences which are attractive to a female travelling demographic and scope the potential for a new Women’s Expedition.

Intrepid launched this product range in 2018 as a way to break down barriers, foster discussion and create immersive local experiences for women that are ordinarily off limits on mixed-group departures. The range currently includes trips in Pakistan, Turkiye, Jordan, Morocco, Nepal and India and has proved to be among the company’s top-sellers.

This year, Intrepid projects it will run over of 350 trips in Sri Lanka and is looking at ways to strengthen its existing product offering through unique new experiences, including those that are female-led. Sri Lanka experienced customer growth of 130% in 2023 and is anticipated to be a key growth market for the company over the coming years.

The initiative will also enhance the skills and knowledge of women by identifying and supporting 10 potential scholarship candidates for the National Tour Guide License test, creating a group of tour guide leaders. To kickstart the program, training sessions will be conducted across three provinces (Central, East, and Uva), targeting female participants from locally-owned businesses.

Speaking to the partnership, Intrepid’s General Manager, Purpose, Sara King said: “Intrepid has a track record championing inclusivity across our trips and offices, and we want to build on this to deliver meaningful economic and social impact through tourism for women in this exciting destination.”

Intrepid’s General Manager Sri Lanka, Poornaka Delpachitra added: "In a nation where tourism ranks among the top five forex earners, women - who make up over 52% of the population - represent only 10% of the industry. Our initiative aims to break barriers, addressing social stigmas to ensure equality and support women into fulfilling careers.”

Intrepid and MDF previously partnered to successfully launch an expedition product in Timor-Leste , designed to expand the potential of tourism and create shared benefits with local communities.

MDF Country Director, Sri Lanka, Maryam Piracha said: “MDF is committed to building partnerships that promote women’s participation in the tourism sector. We are looking forward to collaborating with Intrepid to showcase the opportunities that exist for Sri Lankan tourism suppliers to tap into the growing global female travel segment. MDF believes this partnership will advocate inclusive business practices that enhance competitiveness while creating new avenues for women.”

The project is underway with in-destination training sessions scheduled to start from June 2024.
