Along with the tour announcement, Puscifer unveiled the video for Carina Round’s re-interpretation of the Existential Reckoning track “A Singularity.” Keenan directed the clip, which is a touching memoriam to his pup MiHo.

Said Keenan: “On Oct. 7, 2021, I lost my Muse. Deadly Little MiHo lost her 2 year battle with pancreatitis and kidney disease. We thought we lost her in late 2019, so I panicked and wrote her this song. We were certain she was done for. But we were blessed with a second chance and a bit more time. I rarely share things like this. Too painful. But this one can’t be kept bottled up. As I have mentioned before, she has been hiding in most of my vocal tracks since 2005. She was either in or near the vocal booth every time I tracked. Her sigh, her bark, sniffle, sneeze. Her jingling collar. Her squeaky toys. Usually poorly timed.”

The track will be included on Existential Reckoning: Re-Wired , a re-imagining of the group’s 2020 album. A March 31st release date has just been announced for the collection, featuring contributions from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Tool’s Justin Chancellor, and more.

About Puscifer

Born somewhere in the Arizona desert, Puscifer is an electro-rock band, multimedia experience, traveling circus, and alien abduction survivors. The group’s catalog consists of four full-length studio albums: “V” is for Vagina [2007], Conditions of My Parole [2011], Money Shot [2015], and Existential Reckoning (2020) — in addition to a series of EPs and remixes. Beyond the core trio of Maynard James Keenan [vocals], Mat Mitchell [guitar, production], and Carina Round [vocals, songwriting], the group’s ever-evolving ecosystem encompasses Greg Edwards (bass, guitar, keys), Gunnar Olsen (drums), as well as a cast of characters such as Billy D and his wife Hildy Berger, Major Douche, Special Agent Dick Merkin, and many more. Meanwhile, the moniker’s origins can be traced to a 1995 episode of the HBO classic Mr. Show where Keenan first used the name “Puscifer . ” In addition to tallying tens of millions of streams and views, they’ve piqued the curiosity of the press. Entertainment Weekly christened them, “Exceptionally groovy , ” and Revolver fittingly described them as “indescribable . ” Renowned for an immersive live show, the group’s performances blur the lines between concert and theater, traversing the dusty American Southwest with Billy D and Hildy or the sweaty squared circle with Luchadores. They’ve brought their unique live experience to life everywhere from Coachella to Bonnaroo . On their 2020 debut for Alchemy Recordings/Puscifer Entertainment/BMG entitled Existential Reckoning , Puscifer track Billy D back to the desert and, just maybe, uncover the truth about aliens once and for all.

Puscifer have announced that they've added more dates to their  Existential Reckoning  tour, with the new set of shows taking place throughout North America this fall.

The video was directed by Meats Meier, check it out underneath the tour dates.

The band just wrapped up the first leg of their  Existential Reckoning  tour earlier this week, which was the first time they'd been out on the road since 2017. Prior to the Puscifer tour, Keenan had been in Europe with Tool and Brass Against , which resulted in the vocalist contracting the COVID-19 virus for the fourth time.

"I mean, when you're in a room full of thousands of people, it's being passed around. You get into a tube and you fly 10 hours in a contained environment, you're gonna get it. If somebody has it and you're gonna get it, you can get it. That's just the nature of what it is now. We need to embrace that and stop freaking the (expletive) out," he remarked to AZ Central of his most recent time fighting the illness.

Maynard James Keenan Has More Harsh Words for Fans Who Use Phones at His Shows

Puscifer announce 2023 tour dates and dedicate new remix single to Maynard James Keenan's dog, MiHo

Maynard James Keenan side project Puscifer announce 2023 tour dates and new remix album Existential Reckoning: Re-Wired

Puscifer 2023

Puscifer, the side project of Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, have announced 2023 tour dates, including shows in the US and their first UK and European tour in seven years. Set for June, the tour will see the experimental group play headline shows alongside previously announced appearances at festivals including Hellfest and Mad Cool.

The tour comes with the announcement that the band are continuing their run of album-by-album remix collections with new release Existential Reckoning: Re-Wired, due on March 31 via Puscifer Entertainment/Alchemy Recordings/BMG.

Re-Wired will feature remixes of songs from Puscifer's 2020 album Existential Reckoning by artists including Trent Reznor , Troy Van Leeuwen and Tool bassist Justin Chancellor.

The band have also released the first single from the collection, A Singularity , re-imagined by singer-songwriter Carina Round. Featuring a video shot and edited by MJK himself, the song is dedicated to his beloved dog MiHo, who passed away in 2021.

A statement from Keenan explains some of the lyrical inspiration for the song.  “On Oct. 7, 2021, I lost my Muse," he writes. "Deadly Little MiHo lost her 2 year battle with pancreatitis and kidney disease. We thought we lost her in late 2019, so I panicked and wrote her this song. We were certain she was done for. But we were blessed with a second chance and a bit more time.

"I rarely share things like this.

In other news, Puscifer shared the music video for Carina Round’s version of ‘A Singularity’, which was shot and compiled by Maynard James Keenan in tribute to his dog.

He said of the video: “On Oct 7, 2021, I lost my muse. Deadly Little MiHo lost her two-year battle with pancreatitis and kidney disease. We thought we lost her in late 2019, so I panicked and wrote her this song. We were certain she was done for. But we were blessed with a second chance and a bit more time.

“I rarely share things like this.

Puscifer live, holy fucking shit. Not a complete surprise given the amount of talent on stage (with members of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Devo, Ministry, Omniflux, Carina Round, and legendary producer Mat Mitchell), but this was insane. A 2,5 hour show filled with luchador fights, UFO's, animatronic cock fights, Carina's mesmerising voice and a good mix of old and new songs! Highlights definitely were the performances of The Rapture, Man Overboard, Breathe, Rev 22:20, Grand Canyon, The Remedy, and Life Of Brian (Apparently You Haven't Seen).

There are so many vibrant words I could use to describe a Puscifer show, but none of them would give them justice. It is an experience like nothing you have ever seen. Not only is the music entrancing and powerful, the visuals and act have so much energy as well. Maynard and Carina have so much charismatic styles and stage presence that feed beautiful music into the soul. Truly a spectacular show.

What a show. Part comedy wrestling event, part amazing rock show by an amazing band.

Maynard James Keenan's humour shows throughout the show with video footage in the minor intervals between "Acts"

This was Puscifers first show in Europe and I hope it's not the last time that they play Manchester. Well worth the money and the delay to the latest Tool album.

Well, the show was profound. Maynard James Keenan is one of the greatest artists/visionary artists, vocalists, and winemakers of all time. The show was sublime, and so unique.I don't want to spoil anything, just go and see these monsters if they are playing anywhere within 100 miles radius around you.

Great band and great show! The start time was listed as 8pm and it started right on time. After the opening act and intro, Puscifer played a set of nearly 20 songs over the course of about two hours. In addition, the venue (Sanger New Orleans) as excellent. I would definitely go to another of their shows and would see others at the Sanger as well.

Without comparison. Beautiful insanity on stage for 90 minutes. More than a concert, this was a performance. Long time Puscifer fans and newbies alike will find something to enjoy. Even something there for wrestling fans!

If you get the chance to see Puscifer, especially this tour, DO NOT HESITATE.

Interesting show. I guess sound could have been better.

The show started off with live lucha mexican wrestling which was obnoxious to say the least.

The new album sounds great, loved the drummer first arrangement of the lineup on stage.

Wow. Just wow. The whole show was brilliant. Vocal's in perfect harmony, the music tight. Anyone thinking about seeing them, stop thinking and do it. You won't be disappointed trust me.

CONCERT REVIEW: PUSCIFER Bring an Existential Reckoning to Brooklyn – Kings Theatre (June 25th, 2022)

puscifer tour support

After a six year hiatus, Maynard James Keenan ’s Puscifer are in the midst of a 22-date stateside tour that brought the performance-art troupe to the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York this past Saturday on a hot and steamy night. In support of their fourth full-length studio album “Existential Reckoning” which was finished during the COVID-19 lockdown and released in October 2020 by Alchemy Recordings and BMG, Tool ’s front-man has been at it again with another one of his musical side projects. Keenan is also an original member of A Perfect Circle , a mid-1990s creation by former guitar tech Billy Howedel .

Alongside his alter ego Agent Dick Merkin , Keenan was joined by his core Pusciforce Agents Carina Round (vocals) and Mat Mitchell (guitar, bass, keyboards) as the electro-rockers investigated alien abductions that are all part of a Men in Black-themed, multimedia experience. There could not have been a better host for the night’s enigmatic theatrics to follow than Kings Theater. Originally designed by architectural masters Rapp & Rapp, the theater has been an ornate spectacle for the masses since its opening in 1929 as a movie palace. After closing its doors in the mid-1970s, the historic structure then sat empty for decades until a complete renovation of the nearly 3,700 seat theater had been restored to its vintage condition and reopened to the public in January 2015.

The Fans, The Venue and Everything Else

puscifer tour support

Arriving to the venue in the early evening, VIP fans were spotted lining the sidewalk along the venue’s façade behind red velvet roping, while also spilling into an adjacent courtyard. Although the event was seated, I would later learn that many arrived early hoping to purchase the coveted, limited edition show poster. Promptly at 6:30 pm, the doors beneath the grand marquee in lights opened and the eager patrons immediately filed past the security check points and into the inviting confines of the theater. While many could be seen gawking at the interior grandeur of the theater (present company included), others grabbed a drink from the plethora of bars strategically placed on all levels, joined a waiting friend or snapped a cell phone picture of the historic venue’s centerpiece, the console of a “Wonder Morton” pipe organ that was installed in the original Loew’s New York City movie theaters.

Speaking of cell phones, albeit the final song of Puscifer ’s 18-song set, photo or video recording of any kind, on any device, was strictly prohibited and would result in ejection with no re-entry permitted. And if you were not sure of the protocols, one only needed to read any of the warning posters plastered throughout the venue, announced over the public address system or later cautioned by Agent Merkin himself.

MOODIE BLACK Photos

puscifer tour support

As the lights went down, opening support from the currently Minneapolis-based Moodie Black (who were hand-picked by Keenan himself), who are widely considered the pioneers of the new era noise-rap scene, was imminent. While a large video board projected eerie, glitching holograms at the center of the modest stage setup, Sean Lindahl (guitarist from the band’s original inception) and drummer Bentley Monet took their respective positions within an unrelenting shroud of red light at stage right and left. As the pair erupted into the industrial-laden “Hawk Vs. Vulture” (from 2014’s “Nausea” ), a track that should make Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails proud, it would still be a few more moments until lyricist Kristen Martinez (a.k.a. Kdeath ) appeared from the rear of the stage. Originally hailing from the Arizona desert and a figurehead for the genre-melting scene she has helped spearhead, Martinez immediately engaged an audience that for the most part, had no idea what to expect.

Founded in 2012 and formerly known as GAHEDiNDIE , Moodie Black ’s second song presentation, “Freedom” (from 2018’s “Lucas Acid” ), was just as formidable and brilliant as its predecessor. Penned by Kdeath shortly after coming out as a transgender woman two years prior, the song’s lyrics are “about the state of our country, but also human existence as a whole.”

Throughout the remainder of their ferocious 8-song set, Martinez ’s authenticity continued to shine as she turned turmoil into art with dark poetry that explored themes of isolation, distrust and social media misgendering, to name only a few. Although Moodie Black are known to approach their sound and live performance in an unorthodox manner, the innovative nature of their evolving music continues to emphasize mood and melody that is filled with heavy guitar distortion, synths, pulsating drum beats and vocal hooks reminiscent of The Cure .

For more than a decade, Moodie Black have earned themselves an underground cult following in the annals of alt-rap lore due to their fearless charge into uncharged territory, continually reinventing their sonic alchemy with each critically-acclaimed release. I, for one, am looking forward to witnessing their ability to showcase their kinship with a brooding mood and atmosphere for the next decade and beyond.

At 9:00 pm sharp, a video screen encompassing the stage expanse suddenly came to life. It was Agent Merkin and his warning to all in attendance that anyone who violated the aforementioned cell phone policy would be “ground up in two oversized meat processers to a fine paste” by Puscifer ’s Master Chef as the secret ingredient to the mystery meat known as SPAM . Presuming that there would be violators of the policy (and he was correct in at least one instance when a fan, despite raising his voice in protest, was escorted from his seat, up the aisle and out to the lobby), Agent Merkin thanked us for our “dimwitted culinary contribution.”

Puscife r’s stage design was anchored by a steel scaffold at center stage where Keenan and company would make frequent appearances on its second level throughout the show, while two industrial-sized fans whirled beneath. Following the video introduction, Gunnar Olsen assumed position behind his drum kit, Josh Moreau took to his bass in front of the scaffolding and multi-instrumentalist Mitchell came into view at the opposite end of the stage, immediately trailed by Round, and finally Keenan . Puscifer ’s opening song was the mournfully beautiful “Bread and Circus,” the first of “Existential Reckoning” ’s twelve tracks that would all be performed this night.

Before any further probing continued, Keenan formally introduced his band of agents, followed by the evening’s second song “Postulous.” Hilarity ensued next when a Billy D impostor (a recurring Pusciverse character), after breaching the camera policy, was pointed out by Agent Merkin to his fellow special agents and quickly extracted from the crowd. His wife, Hildy Berger , was nowhere in sight as her husband was whisked away into the shadows.

On this night, Puscifer would thrill their diehard fans for nearly two hours with at least one offering from each of their studio releases, including “Existential Reckoning” , 2007’s “V Is for vag**a” (their debut studio album), the 2009 E.P. “C Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE)” , 2011’s “Conditions of My Parole” and 2015’s “Money $hot.”

Keeping with the  “Existential Reckoning” playlist and the theme of investigating alien abductions, Puscifer knocked out six more consecutive tracks from said album, including “The Underwhelming,” “UPGrade” and “Apocalyptical,” the latter of which was preceded by a second video message from Agent Merkin that Pusciforce have “identified a hidden mobile cloning facility” that is “alien-owned and -operated” and “that appears to be run by a combination of genetic engineers, public relation biologists, booking agents and smug social media influencers, all extraterrestrial in nature. The purpose of the clones is still a mystery, but it appears that the aliens are either duplicating and/or replacing red carpet celebrities that have been [deemed]mediocre or [with]outdated fashion sensibilities.”

Highlights from the next grouping of five songs included “Personal Prometheus,” which featured melodic keyboards and Round’s mysteriously-echoing background vocals. “Momma Sed,” making its tour debut and the first time it has been performed live since 2013, was followed by the well-received “The Humbling River , ” the sixth and final track from their 2009 E.P., marked by a slowly progressing, yet thunderous rhythm section and exquisite guitar picking.

Before a 6-minute intermission , complete with a minute-by-minute count down via video announcements, Agent Merkin briefed the loyal audience (who continued to stand, as they had all night) with one last cautionary tale, “it appears that when the aliens introduced some of the clones to the red carpet prematurely, bad things can happen [with]the freshman clones.” Following the break, Keenan was atop the scaffold (now as his Billy D persona) when he addressed bassist Moreau below, “Garcon, are you a bartender? What are you supposed to be? Are you one of them, uh, men in back in black guys? Let me ask you something. Is Elvis an alien and is he living in Kalamazoo, Michigan?” With a shrug of Agent Moreau ’s shoulders, Billy D descended to the main stage. Upon witnessing the costumed aliens who had also joined the theatrics, he quipped, “You all have aliens in Brooklyn too? I thought that shit was just in Arizona.”

The evening’s final quintet of songs made for the perfect recipe from the Puscifer ’s catalog, comprised of “Bullet Train to Iowa,” “vag**a Mine” (complete with a light saber battle between Billy D and the aliens – “You don’t f**k with Darth Vader bitch.” ), “Flippant,” the title track from “Conditions of My Parole” and “Bedlamite.” However, before the show’s finale, Keenan addressed the audience one last time. “You all were great, fantastic actually. A couple of announcements. Folks, we are doing a couple of pay-per-views. Not one, but two pay-per-views, coming out around Halloween. One for “Conditions of My Parole” and one for “V Is for vag**a.” You can [now]pull out your stupid cell phone if you like.”

The  “Existential Reckoning” tour rolls on for the next two weeks, until concluding in Seattle, Washington on July 10. If this immersive live show hits a city near you, you must attend to aid the Pusciforce agents in deciphering the extraterrestrial coded message that they have intercepted, emanating from the Briefcase, because “An Existential Reckoning is imminent.”

In October 2020, Puscifer held a streaming event, “Existential Reckoning: Live At Arcosanti,” which featured the band performing  “Existential Reckoning” in its entirety. The event, which broke online attendance records, can now be viewed here .

They never fit in on the Phoenix music scene. Now they're opening for Maynard James Keenan

puscifer tour support

As an aspiring hip-hop artist doing all she could to gain some kind of foothold in the Phoenix rap scene, Kristen Martinez used to dream of one day playing Arizona Federal Theatre, although she knew it by its former name.

“I saw so many great acts at the Dodge,” Martinez says. “I was like, ‘One day I'm gonna play here.’ I had no idea how I’d ever do that, though, ‘cause no one wanted anything to do with us.”

It was hard enough trying to line up an opening spot on a local bill for the experimental noise-rap she and her friends were doing as GAHEDiNDIE.

"Even at Modified Arts and places that were independent, underground, First Fridays and stuff, for whatever reason, people just wanted nothing to do with us," she says.

M3F festival in Phoenix has announced its 2023 dates. Here's what you need to know

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

In 2009, after three years of struggling to make something happen in Phoenix, Martinez and her crew moved to Minneapolis, drawn by the edgier underground hip-hop scene embodied by Rhymesayers Entertainment and the Doomtree collective.

Thirteen years later, Martinez, guitarist Sean Lindahl and visual artist Jamee Varda are headed back to Phoenix with their new group, Moodie Black, as the opening act on the Puscifer tour that's playing Arizona Federal Theatre on Saturday, June 11.

"It means everything to me," Martinez says.

"My family still lives there. I have a better perspective now on all the stuff that happened back then. But even now, if it wasn't for Maynard giving us the opportunity, no one would have anything to do with us or want us to play that theater."

Interview: Maynard James Keenan on his Puscifer tour,  winery and why he needs 3 bands

How Moodie Black landed the Puscifer tour

Maynard is Maynard James Keenan, the voice of Puscifer, Tool and A Perfect Circle, who launched a side gig as a winemaker with Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards after leaving L.A. for Jerome, Arizona, in 1995.

Keenan credits his wife with introducing him to Moodie Black.

"She always gets to pick the soundtrack for her birthday during harvest," Keenan says. "And that was on it. So we kind of did a deep dive on them. And it seemed like a good fit."

Alice Cooper group record-store reunion film is coming out.    Here's how to get it

It was about six months ago that Keenan's wife reached out to Moodie Black on Instagram.

"She was like, 'We've been playing your music on our playlist to grow our vines in our vineyards,'" Martinez recalls. "So that was weird. But I was like, 'It's awesome that you do that.'"

As they got to talking, Keenan's wife said she was sending someone from the winery to check out MB Foodhouse, the Minneapolis taco shop Martinez opened during the pandemic.

One Saturday morning, a guy from Caduceus Cellars showed up at the food house, ate a bunch of tacos, bought some merch and hung out for a while.

"We talked for an hour and a half about touring and all the stuff he does for Puscifer," Martinez says.

When Maynard James Keenan reached out

"And at the end of our conversation, he was like, 'If you get hit up in the next couple days, I just want you to know it's completely legit. Like, we might hit you up to do a tour, blah, blah.' A few days later, Maynard just reached out directly on Instagram."

They struck up a friendship based primarily on talking about food.

"We don't talk about music," Martinez says.

"He sends me pictures of his espresso machine. But he asked if we wanted to support the tour, and I was like, 'Of course.' We had been looking for an opportunity to do a major tour for, at that point, 15, 16 years. And here's the call."

When Tool played Minneapolis in March, Keenan dropped by the Foodhouse for tacos.

Martinez says she's hoping Keenan has a chance to catch their set while they're on tour together.

"We kind of want to tie up all the loose ends," she says.

"And I think when he sees us live, it'll make a lot more sense to him — like who we are and all that stuff. It makes a lot of sense for us to be on the Puscifer tour because it's  such a different vibe and they're so weird and theatrical. It's a perfect fit for us."

Coming out as a transgender woman

Martinez came out in 2016 as a transgender woman, having said as much two years earlier in the lyrics to "Linen Funerals" on the Moodie Black "Nausea" album without many people really noticing.

"I just got to a point where I was like, 'I can't hide it anymore,'" she says. "And because Moodie Black was getting a little bit bigger, I didn't want somebody to out me. I wanted to be in control of that narrative. So I was like, 'OK, this is who I am."

She also felt it was important as an artist.

"I started to consider how can I continue to write and make music if I can't have my full perspective at my disposal?," she says. "So that was really what pushed me. It was like I can't write, I can't perform, I can't do anything if I'm not me."

There's been some fallout. Her best friend isn't talking to her anymore. Some other friends are now "quieter" friends. It's emerged as the dominant theme in music articles.

"It's been tough," she says. "There's ups and downs with being trans in the music scene, even more so nowadays."

Which makes it that much more important to be part of this Puscifer tour.

"It helps to infiltrate these standard cis dudes' spaces and show them we can do these tours. We can do this stuff. It's not about trans or not. We're touring with Puscifer."

Why Phoenix show is a full-circle moment

The tour, on which they're joined by drummer Bentley Monet of local synth-punk nerd-rap duo Snailmate, is also an amazing opportunity for Moodie Black, and there's something especially sweet about playing a major theater in downtown Phoenix.

"I think we just got off on a bad foot," Martinez says of her relationship with Phoenix.

Phoenix history:  How Chester Bennington's death led to a rebirth for the Phoenix band he fronted as a teen

"I didn't have any connections in the hip-hop community when I first started doing music. And I quickly realized that most of the time when you ask to be an opener, people will ignore you. You've got to know somebody that knows somebody to be an opener."

That didn't seem fair to Martinez, who was barely out of Desert Vista High School at the time.

As she recalls, "I was very outspoken about it. I was vocal about the clique-ishness within the scene, in the hip hop community."

She felt her group was being blacklisted for being too far left of center musically.

"So I was like, "I think it's messed up that we're doing weird, crazy music so we don't get the opportunity to play in front of large rooms because we're different,'" she says. "We made a lot of people angry, I think, because we were kind of aggressive."

Interview: Robin Wilson on Gin Blossoms becoming more than 'the biggest band on Mill Ave'

Hindsight being 20/20, she can see that her reaction to rejection wasn't helping.

"I was young," she says.

"And probably a lot of it was my fault. I was ego-driven, saying things that I look back on and try to take responsibility for. I was really bad at communicating. I keep my circle very small. I'm not extroverted. And that hurts you in this business."

Coming back to perform is the full-circle moment she needed.

"I'm such a different person now, in a lot of ways," she says.

"So it's awesome to be able to go back there on a larger platform and perform. It means a lot to be able to try to iron things out and say that I'm OK with all the AZ stuff that happened and that I really embrace it. To me, that's where I'm from."

Maynard James Keenan: ”If you’re not putting yourself in the space where the breakthrough can happen, you’re not going to have one”

After a 60th birthday celebration for the ages and ahead of a Fear Inoculum victory lap around the UK, Maynard James Keenan reflects on a life on the cutting edge of heavy music, how his priorities have changed with age, why he’ll never actually retire, and who would win in a fight between him and Mark Zuckerberg…

Maynard James Keenan: ”If you’re not putting yourself in the space where the breakthrough can happen, you’re not going to have one”

Maynard James Keenan is shouting at Kerrang!.

“Speak up, son!”

His voice – the honeyed instrument that’s bewitched OGTs since back in 1992, from the first EP – has hardened into something steelier and more cantankerous. Thankfully, he’s not actually angry with us. Instead, he’s feigning poor hearing while playfully leaning into his seventh decade, to evade a question about today being the 18th anniversary of the release of Tool ’s 10,000 Days .

“Do you really think I can remember that long ago?!” he asks with mock incredulity, before taking a breath. “It’s been a minute…”

In fact, it’s been almost nine-and-a-half million minutes since the release of Tool’s fourth album, and more than 31 million since James Herbert Keenan arrived on this planet. That’s right: on April 17, Maynard turned 60. Being one of music’s most enigmatic figures, with a predilection for wigs and outlandish stage get-ups, has always made him a difficult person to place, age-wise. But with the arrival of this ‘Sessanta’ tour (Italian for 60), he’s making no secret of it.

Nor does he hide his fatigue. Since a COVID pandemic that inflicted him with lung damage, Maynard’s three bands – Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer – have operated with truncated schedules in an effort to make up for lost time.

And so it is that after the conclusion of Sessanta with two nights at Colorado’s majestic Red Rocks Amphitheatre – a jaunt that’s seen A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and their pals in Primus rotate sets across 30 songs – he has only a few weeks at home before Tool head to Europe. Except that domestic time means work on his winery, Caduceus Cellars, his Brazilian jiu-jitsu studio, Verde Valley BJJ, as well as his obligations as a husband and father.

“If we’re being honest, it’s pretty exhausting,” he says, his speech as slow as his engagement with reappraisals of his work. He’s cautious about what he does on his days off, so keeps socialising to a minimum. “I’m on full lockdown to make sure the pipes are ready for the next day.”

puscifer tour support

Of 10,000 Days, then, Maynard will simply say, “Some of the songs still ring true and are fun to play, while some are more difficult.” Meanwhile, practically speaking, he suggests, “People got caught up on wanting to fix a thing” – one of many references to his frustrations with the way Tool make records. Apparently the results make those challenges worth it. “[10,000 Days] is a beautiful marker for that moment,” he acknowledges.

Thankfully, Maynard isn’t too tired or long in the tooth to snigger at tonight’s show being at Clarkston, Michigan’s own Pine Knob Theater. “That wasn’t lost on me. And it’s just around the corner from Bellend Tavern!”

While the veracity of that piece of local trivia is questionable, what’s not is Maynard James Keenan’s ability to pivot – a word he’ll use several times throughout the course of this chat – to suit the circumstances at hand. Despite his regimented outlook, Sessanta offers the chance for a looser “reset” format with no opening act and no headliner.

“It lends itself to that community vibe, changing that idea of, ‘This set of egos play their songs, then this set of egos play their songs,’” he explains. “It forces that music in front of people and breaks down the barriers of the islands that bands tend to become.”

“It’s just f*cking money. It should be about the music, right?”

Not all established musicians, it turns out, are quite as willing to work this way. Maynard had a similar celebration, Cinquanta, for his 50th birthday, which saw A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and alt.rockers Failure play two nights at LA’s Greek Theatre (a live record from which was released earlier this year).

In recruiting bands for those shows, Maynard reveals, the majority of invitations went unanswered, with the one response he did get asking: ‘Why the fuck would you want to do it that way?’ of the intention to split everything from the shows equally between the three bands.

“You might be on top today, but you might be on the bottom tomorrow,” says Maynard of what the experience taught him. “It’s just fucking money. It should be about the music, right?”

puscifer tour support

Maynard and his family recently got a new puppy, a gorgeous bitch named Boba, which appears to be a pit bull.

They have another dog he describes as “already three years past her expiration date”, which he considers a miracle. Mindful that his wife and daughter will take the loss of the older dog badly and looking to ease that sadness, when a building manager in Texas revealed he had a large litter of puppies, Maynard was won over.

“ Fuck me ,” he recalls thinking when he first saw the blue-eyed, pink-nosed beauty, knowing his menagerie of animals was about to welcome a new member.

Speaking of canines, Maynard’s friend has got a Jack Russell Terrier – an irrepressible specimen prone to clenching down on a tennis ball for hours at a time, making games of catch a frustratingly one-sided affair. The pooch is, he says, the perfect representation of his younger self, often unable to let go of “the shit that just doesn’t matter”.

puscifer tour support

Much has changed, though. So when, recently, snow storms prevented A Perfect Circle and Primus’ gear getting to Las Vegas’ Sick New World , Maynard and co. kept cool heads, begging and borrowing equipment from other bands on the bill.

“I’m not going to start yelling at the walls, or blaming production and management – that’s just a waste of fucking time and energy,” he reasons. “Was it avoidable? Probably . But here’s the problem in front of you, so as a professional that’s seasoned and knows how to pivot, that’s what you have to do.”

Maynard’s many non-musical pursuits have evidently added to his sense of perspective over the years.

“It’s what you do as a winemaker. If the weather changes, as cute as your plan might be, the reality is you have to pivot, or you don’t have wine this year. So when it comes to a show like [Sick New World], it shows you the creative power that the guys in Primus and our crew have. We were able to do what it took to make the show happen. It probably wasn’t the best show [A Perfect Circle] could have done, but certainly one of the more memorable ones.”

puscifer tour support

There’s evidence to suggest his capacity for grumbling hasn’t gone away entirely. We ask about being joined by the rest of Tool a few days earlier to perform Ænima at the Hollywood Bowl. But rather than focusing on the subversive satisfaction of playing a song praying for Los Angeles to be washed into the ocean while appearing in one of the city’s most iconic venues, he’s more interested in what the experience taught his bandmates – guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor and drummer Danny Carey – about operating more flexibly.

“The kick I got out of it was watching [his Tool bandmates] realise that maybe we don’t need all the bells and whistles, and we can just plug in a couple of amps and bang it out,” says Maynard. “Of course, that’s easy for me to say – I’m the guy who sings in one end of the thing and sound comes out the other. I think they probably did find it refreshing that they didn’t have to overthink it, they could just come in and do that song. Does that open the possibility of doing things simpler like that in the future? Not up to me . But I would hope it would plant a seed.”

It’s easy to forget that asking Maynard a question about the inner workings of Tool would have been a bit of a no-no only a few years ago. When K! points out he appears to have softened with the passing of time, he agrees, though with a degree of irascibility.

“I just don’t care ,” he explains, lilting upwards on the word ‘care’. “There are some things when you’re younger that you just fixate on. There are some things we definitely adhere to, and some things we’re kind of pricks about, but that just comes with the territory of being a weirdo onstage, writing songs. With age there’s some shit you let go of.”

“With age there’s some sh*t you let go of”

Maynard remains the subject of misconceptions and misinterpretations. How about the reason he stands at the back of the stage while playing with Tool, for instance. It’s to keep a greater distance from the audience and retain an air of mystery, right?

“With Tool, Danny’s drums are so loud, he has like 17 arms and 15 legs, and then you’ve got Adam’s row of amps and Justin’s wall of bass,” he explains. “It just makes it way harder for the front-of-house to have a mix if [I’m] down front. And the position up top is also great, visually, because I can see what’s going on, we can connect with each other by looking at each other. If I was facing the audience, my back would be to what’s happening, so I can’t take cues.”

Despite still not being entirely comfortable with the obsessive scrutiny that fans heap upon his music, telling us in 2018 he finds some to be “unreasonable”, Maynard has gone as far as engaging with them to help him with something important. For 15 years, he had used the internet to try to locate two friends from his army days, Cheryl Carney and Jeffrey Parks, but with no success. So he gave up for a couple of years.

Last year, on his 59th birthday, Maynard renewed the search, this time throwing it out to his social media followers. It worked; he hung out with Jeff only last night, meeting his grandson in the process. Cheryl, who shares a musical past with Maynard as well as a military one, reached out too, hanging out at Sessanta’s stop in Phoenix on his actual birthday. “The best present ever,” he says of reconnecting with Cheryl, the other half of his formative punk rock duo that would regularly make the 70-mile trip from Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), near Killeen Texas, to Austin for shows.

It’s very apparent speaking to Maynard that he has a deep and continued appreciation of the people who have positively impacted his life.

While he’s long been friends with all three members of Primus, having winemaking in common with “stellar musician” Les Claypool (who has his own Claypool Cellars), it’s drummer Tim Alexander who he shares the greatest connection with.

Back in the early ’90s, when Tim’s other band Laundry played with Tool, he brought along a VHS tape of an early UFC competition to watch on the bus, which inspired Maynard to study Brazilian jiu-jitsu under mixed martial artist Rickson Gracie.

Later, when Maynard decided it was time to “get the fuck out of” Los Angeles, it was Tim who suggested he check out a little town in Arizona called Jerome where he used to live, so the two took a road trip to check it out. Maynard moved there almost immediately.

“He was the first drummer on the APC stuff, The Hollow [from 2000’s Mer De Noms], and he did Queen B from the first Puscifer release [2007’s ‘V’ Is For Vagina],” he explains affectionately, relishing the chance to catch up with his friend post-show when there’s a double day off coming up, or on the many long drives as Sessanta traverses the country. “It provides the chance for camaraderie and communion.”

puscifer tour support

For a man who jokes about serious subjects, Maynard can also be surprisingly serious about the jokey stuff. A couple of months back, 57-year-old Mike Tyson paid a visit to Verde Valley BJJ, the jiu-jitsu studio Maynard co-founded, in the early stages of the former heavyweight boxing champion's fight with Jake Paul, 30 years his junior, taking place on July 20.

We ask Maynard, a college wrestler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, whether he’d consider a similar age-gap UFC bout – against enthusiast Mark Zuckerberg, perhaps?

“No, no… that’s absurd,” he scoffs. “Mike Tyson was a world-class fighter whose body was built for those things and was operating at the top three per cent of the people who did that thing. Everything about him, like his residual bone density, lends itself to that professional level. Even in high school, my wrestling record was barely above 50 per cent wins. I was a way better runner than I was a wrestler. The idea of competing against someone larger and younger than me is kinda dumb.”

Oh, and there’s one other thing…

“Mark [Zuckerberg] and I have mutual friends, so if I make any threats against him, I’d soon be dismissed, so I better shut up.”

After a moment’s silence, Maynard, sensing our disappointment, gives us what we want…

“Though I will say that I will fuck that punk up!” he booms.

“You have to dig in and get past that idea of how your process works and fix your process”

As bizarre as this exchange is, it’s a reminder that whatever his role in life, be it as a musician, a winemaker or a martial artist, Maynard is a practical man – albeit one with a very silly streak. When he’s at home, he’ll start each day by feeding the many dogs and cats and birds, then making sure his daughter gets to school, before turning his attention to music.

“Nothing else matters,” he says of that creative mindset. “There’s a new season of The Witcher? Don’t care . There’s a cool swap meet happening? No . You just have to make yourself dig in and get past that idea of how your process works and fix your process.”

That discipline means he gives short shrift to anyone less committed to the job at hand, especially when the clock is ticking.

“Definitely with Tool,” he offers. “We can’t fucking wait 14 fucking years to release a thing! That’s insane! So we just have to figure out a different way. With the other projects it’s easier, but we still have to set the time aside. Aside from your children and your wife or husband, the next priority has to be writing. Otherwise this is not going to get done.”

Does this new way of working mean releasing music little and often, rather than waiting a decade-plus for a new record?

“I mean all of those things. But ask yourself: if you’re writing a book and you spend an hour a week on it, how the fuck is that ever going to get done?! If you’re only working on that thing for five to six hours a week, then it’s not a priority for you.”

Does he wield his own busyness against his various bandmates in a, ‘If I can make the time, then you can!’ style?

“Yes, because I’m not allowed to have my morning coffee until I get something done. I go to jiu-jitsu to clear my head before coming back and digging in. At some point, even if you’re hitting a wall, you’ll have a breakthrough. Something fits. You’re not forcing it. You’re just making sure you’re in the space where the breakthrough can happen. If you’re not putting yourself in the space where the breakthrough can happen, you’re not going to have one.”

For Maynard, whose 85-year-old father still skis competitively, age needn’t mean obsolescence. It’s yet another change that life throws at you, arguably the ultimate one, that requires a realistic outlook, careful consideration and some sensible recalibrating.

Take, for example, his voice, that most celebrated attribute.

“There were approaches to vocals when I was 28 that I can’t do now, so there’s no point in trying to replicate it – it’s just not going to work,” he concedes. “Everybody’s voice is affected by ageing, with the exception of that dude from the Scorpions [75-year-old Klaus Meine]. Jesus Christ! That guy still hits the notes… it’s like, ‘Fuck you, man!’ Things change – so again, you have to pivot and come up with things that do work. Don’t bother putting your worst foot forward on a song you can’t do – you can adjust a song to make it work, or just write for where you are and age with it.”

With so many irons in the fire, however, not all can be kept aglow forever.

“At the age of 60, you’re always thinking of the exit strategy for a lot of the projects that I’ve built,” he admits. “If a band dies, there’s no more band. But with something like a winery or vineyards, the process for that label can continue for generations if there are generations to pick it up. And your community gets to benefit from the establishment of that endeavour.”

How much is he looking to exit from? Could he see himself retiring?

“You hear horror stories of people retiring from a position they've been doing their whole life and because they have no purpose, they check out – they just die. When I think of an exit strategy, I think of getting rid of the extra stuff and focusing on the things I can manage until death. So it’s not a full exit strategy; just a focusing of sorts. There’s no such thing as retirement.”

puscifer tour support

While it’s unclear which projects will and won’t make the grade in the years to come, for now Maynard is focusing is on the music that’s in front of him, which includes some tracks Mat Mitchell recorded with drummer Sarah Jones, who played on the majority of Puscifer’s 2020 album, Existential Reckoning , before a lucrative job offer whisked her away.

“We lost her to Harry Styles when he went out [on tour] for 20 fucking years,” says Maynard, that faux fire reappearing in his tone, before becoming more reasonable. “[Sarah] was supposed to be in [Puscifer], but she got picked up by Harry, which is an amazing gig.”

Once he’s home for a couple of weeks, then, before the Tool machine rolls again, Maynard will be in his office-cum-aviary, adding his magic touch to songs while birds tweet around him, and hanging crystals refract light into dancing patterns on the wall.

This appears to be his happy place, provided that Mat – Puscifer member/producer, tech wizard and mastermind of Sessanta – has sifted through countless hard drives to find these works in progress.

Perhaps this is something Maynard might like to add to his list of responsibilities in future? He scowls. Clearly he has his limits.

“Fuck that headache!”

Here’s a running list of clashes between Ticketmaster, fans and artists

The Justice Department filed a sweeping antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster and parent company Live Nation Entertainment on Thursday, accusing them of running an illegal monopoly over live events in America — squelching competition and driving up prices for fans.

WATCH: Garland announces Ticketmaster, Live Nation anti-trust lawsuit

Here’s a timeline of some of the dustups between artists, fans, and Ticketmaster over the years.

Pearl Jam vs. Ticketmaster

Pearl Jam filed a complaint against Ticketmaster with the Justice Department, claiming that the company used its position in the industry to stop promoters from booking the band because they railed against Ticketmaster’s pricing. Pearl Jam also alleged the company had a monopoly over ticket distribution because of its relationship with various venues.

Stubhub vs Ticketmaster and the Golden State Warriors

StubHub sued Ticketmaster and the Golden State Warriors, alleging it unfairly required fans looking to resell tickets to use Ticketmaster’s resale exchange.

The online ticket marketplace and division of San Jose, California-based eBay Inc. alleged in the lawsuit that the organizations prevent fans from deciding how they wanted to resell tickets and artificially drove up ticket prices.

Swifties vs Ticketmaster

Taylor Swift posted a story on Instagram in November expressing her anger and frustration over the hours spent by fans trying to buy tickets for her tour.

Fans trying to scoop up tickets in a pre-sale for Swift’s The Eras tour were met by massive delays and error messages that Ticketmaster blamed on bots and historically unprecedented demand.

The Boss vs Ticketmaster

Fans of Bruce Springsteen were also in an uproar when tickets first went on sale for his tour, particularly over Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing model, which sent tickets soaring to $5,000 or more when there was high demand.

Ticketmaster said at the time that the vast majority of Springsteen’s fans were able to buy tickets at face value, which averaged $202.

U.S. Senate vs Ticketmaster

The issue of Ticketmaster’s dominance in the entertainment industry comes before the U.S. Senate and lawmakers want to know whether a lack of competition contributed to its spectacular breakdown during a sale of Taylor Swift concert tickets.

Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee also debated possible action, including making tickets non-transferable to cut down on scalping and requiring more transparency in ticket fees. Some lawmakers suggest it may be time to split Ticketmaster and concert promoter Live Nation. The Department of Justice approved the merger in 2010.

Minnesota vs. Ticketmaster

A so-called Taylor Swift bill is signed into law in May in Minnesota. The bill aims to guarantee more transparency and protection to people buying tickets online for concerts, sporting events and other live events in the state.

The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift’s 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket, among other measures. The law will apply to tickets purchased in Minnesota or other states for concerts or other live events held in Minnesota.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2025, and applies to tickets sold on or after that date.

"And the minute they got there, my two sons went fishing. Got a boat, went fishing. My three daughters ended up on a boat and said they would see me around 3 or 4 o'clock — me working. And then made a call and they were drinking drinks at this point," the dad of seven says.

"So they cruised in around 8 o'clock at night. I've been working. I said, 'We came to France to be as a family and they go, ‘It’s working great, Dad.'"

When his kids asked what they should do next, Costner replied, "I don't know, we need your tour director to figure that out."

Elsewhere in the conversation, Costner spoke about how his son Hayes had a part in Horizon .

"He didn’t have to audition. Listen, I know these parts are so important in people’s careers so I don’t just hand them out like candy," the proud dad said.

"Actually, the character I play is called Hayes Ellison and you know, I started this thing in 1988 and in 2024, I’m finally making it. But I named my son Hayes and he was 13 years old and I thought, ‘I really have to make this movie.’"

"And I looked at him, I said, ‘You know, I want you to be in this movie and if you see it, it’s a devastating moment. It’s a moment you never want to have to experience but the choice that he makes also will put a lump in your throat, when you see what he does."

At the premiere of his film, Costner was seen posing on the red carpet , wearing a bespoke black suit and bowtie by BRIONI, standing in between son Hayes and Grace.

Next to Grace, daughter Annie posed next to son Cayden while daughter Lily stood on the other side of Hayes. The family smiled as they posed together for the rare moment, getting ready to head into the venue.

As he took to the stage to address the crowd once the screening finished, Costner shared that the event was made extra special by his kids' attendance.

"I'll never forget this," the star told the audience, where his kids sat front row. "Neither with my children. They all look so beautiful, dressed up so nice, the women, the men. They're so handsome."

Costner shares daughters Annie and Lily, as well as son Joe, 36, with ex-wife Cindy Silva. He is dad to son Liam, 26, with ex Bridget Rooney, and shares his kids Cayden, Hayes and Grace with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.

Taylor Swift's Entire Dress Coming Off During Concert Proves She Can Do It With a Wardrobe Malfunction

Taylor swift had a major wardrobe malfunction during her may 19 eras tour show in stockholm, causing her to untie her entire dress to fix the issue..

Who's afraid of a little old wardrobe malfunction?

Certainly not Taylor Swift , who effortlessly handled a tech issue that required her to take off her dress during the acoustic section of her May 19 Eras Tour show in Stockholm, Sweden.

After noting that part of the sound device attached to her outfit had "come undone," the "Fortnight" singer told the crowd in a video posted to TikTok May 20, "Just talk amongst yourselves."

Following the instruction, Taylor sat at her piano bench and undid her entire ombré blue wrap dress in an attempt to make adjustments herself, revealing her black-and-gold bedazzled set underneath, which she wore during the previous Tortured Poets Department  era of the show. When that didn't work either, one of her crew members arrived on stage to help her.

Naturally, fans attending the Stockholm concert were surprised by the unexpected dress removal, with one concertgoer heard asking in the clip, "Oh, is she changing?"

Others praised Taylor for being Ms. Perfectly Fine through the whole ordeal, with one TikTok user commenting, "Even when there's a malfunction she's adorable."

Of course, this wasn't the first mishap that Taylor's had to shake off since her tour kicked off over a year ago. Back in February, the 34-year-old almost took a tumble off one of the set builds during a stop in Tokyo.
