Bridgetown is the main seaport/cruise port, the capital and biggest city of Barbados. Fka Town of Saint Michael, Greater Bridgetown metro area is within the island's Saint Michael parish. Locally referred to as "The City", the most common reference to Bridgetown is simply "Town". The city covers a total area of approx 40 km2 (15 mi2) and has a population around 110,000.

Barbados' second-largest town and port is Speightstown (population around 4,000), located approx 20 km/12 mi to the north along the island's west coast.

Port Bridgetown (locode BBBGI) is located along Carlisle Bay (on the island's southwestern coast). Parts of the metro area (aka ABC Highway) borders with the parishes St James and Christ Church. Grantley Adams International Airport is located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of downtown, and offers daily flights to all major cities in the Caribbean, USA, Canada and the UK.

At its current location, the town was established in 1628 by English settlers. The prior settlement was at St James Town. Bridgetown City is a popular West Indies travel vacation destination and serves as major financial and convention center, as well as a major cruise port of call in the Southern Caribbean. In 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison were designated "UNESCO World Heritage Site".

The cruise port serves the entire Barbados Island (Caribbean Sea). It is managed by the port authority company "Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc". Its largest shareholders (investors) are the country's Government (through the state-owned company "Barbados Port Inc", with 30% share) and the private companies "Goddard Enterprises Ltd" (20%) and "Cave Shepherd & Co Ltd" (20%). The remaining 30% of the cruise terminal's shares are held by the general public (subscribed at the initial building stage of the port's development).

Barbados is included in many Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries, also visiting Leeward Islands (Guadeloupe, St Martin, St Barts, Nevis, St Kitts), Greater Antilles, Windward Islands (Martinique, St Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica), Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba.

Bridgetown Barbados also serves as turnaround (departure) port for cruise liners in the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, P&O UK (fly-cruise deals from Southampton England during the winter season).

In 2017, the cruise port handled a toyal of 818,752 passengers, or 12,9% increase over 2016 (725,020 passengers). Of all these cruise ship tourists, 137,541 stayed overnight (compared to 130,924 in 2016). The port's main source markets are the UK (33,5% share / 222,322 passengers), followed by USA (28,4% / 188,970 passengers) and Canada (12,8% / 85,209 passengers).

In 2021, RCI-Royal Caribbean homeported in Bridgetown (for the first time in the company's history) the ship Grandeur Of The Seas . The liner's winter 2021-2022 program (December 2021 through April 2022) was based on 3 itineraries - all leaving roundtrip from Port Bridgetown. RCI's fly-cruise deals were inclusive of cheaper charter flights from Miami . RCI's Barbados hotel packages offer tourists to stay in premium properties like Hilton Barbados Resort, Turtle Beach Resort, Sea Breeze Beach House Resort, South Beach Hotel Barbados, Radisson Aquatica Resort Barbados, Accra Beach Hotel & Spa.

  • 7-night "Southern Caribbean Explorer" itinerary - to Scarborough (Tobago), Port-of-Spain (Trinidad), St George's (Grenada), Kingstown (St Vincent, Grenadines), Roseau (Dominica), Castries (St Lucia)
  • 7-night "Southern Caribbean Adventure" itinerary - to St George's, Kralendijk (Bonaire), Oranjestad (Aruba), Willemstad (Curacao), Port-of-Spain
  • 14-night "Ultimate Caribbean" itinerary - to St George's, Kingstown, Kralendijk, Oranjestad, Willemstad, Port-of-Spain, Cartagena (Colombia), Colon (Panama), Puerto Limon (Costa Rica)

For winter 2022-2023 season, Port Bridgetown reported a successful season handling 362 booked (358 received) cruise ship visits and 625,847 passengers (608,269 received), which was 86% of the pre-COVID record season 2018-2019 (726,028 passengers, 384 ship berthings).

For winter 2023-2024 (October-April), the cruise port had a record-breaking season with a total of 407 booked cruise ship berthings (392 received) from 26 different cruise line brands, with expected 741,265 passengers (715,527 received). The berthings' number included 18 maiden calls and a total of 217 homeporting operations/roundtrips from Bridgetown.

By annual passenger traffic (statistical data 2019), the Caribbean's top-10 largest airports are:

  • Luis Munoz Marin Airport/aka Isla Verde ( San Juan Puerto Rico ) with ~9,5 million pax
  • Punta Cana Airport ( Punta Cana Dominicana ) with ~7,2 million pax
  • Jose Marti Airport ( Havana Cuba ) with 5,7+ million pax
  • Sangster Airport ( Montego Bay Jamaica ) with ~4,8 million pax
  • Lynden Pindling Airport ( Nassau Bahamas ) with ~4,1 million pax
  • Las Americas Airport ( Santo Domingo Dominicana ) with ~4 million pax
  • Piarco Airport ( Port-of-Spain Trinidad ) with 2,8+ million pax
  • Queen Beatrix Airport ( Oranjestad Aruba ) with 2,5+ million pax
  • Pointe-a-Pitre Airport ( Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe ) with ~2,5 million pax
  • Grantley Adams Airport (Bridgetown Barbados) with ~2,3 million pax

This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean.

Bridgetown cruise terminal

Bridgetown Barbados cruise port terminal (aka "Deep Water Harbour") is operational since January 14, 1994. The port has 4 deepwater quays with capacity to accommodate up to 6 vessels at a time. The berths are numbered 2, 3, 4, and the "sugar berth", in addition to the port's breakwater.

Rarely, when all berths are occupied, cruise ships dock at the Esso (cargo) terminal.

Bridgetown cruise ship terminal offers modern amenities and facilities, such as Health Center, Customs, Immigration, Animal Quarantine, Barbados Tourism Office (tourist info center), Post Office. Other terminal building facilities are cafes, 2 restaurants (open-air, with full-service bars), business (conference) facility, a hand-made pottery (Bajan craft) shop, 21 duty-free shops (all air-conditioned, tax-free prices are 30-50% cheaper than in the USA or UK / Europe), car rental offices, internet zone.

There is a special departure area for passengers with pre-booked shore excursions and tours in Barbados. One of the island's cruise shore excursions is themed on beer and rum tasting. The guided tours visit the Foursquare Rum Distillery (in the Four Roads village/Saint Philip parish) and also the DreadHop Brewing (Christ Church parish) where tourists can taste the Bajan craft beer.

Bridgetown Cruise Terminal has a total area of 60,000 ft2 (5575 m2), of which approx 20,000 ft2 (1860 m2) is the shopping area. Outside the port's entrance is the Chattel Village (marketplace) with 16 outdoor shops. Also there is a bus stop / taxi rank.

The cruise port is located approx 13 mi (21 km) from the Grantley Adams Airport (approx 30 min bus drive). The shuttle bus service from the port to downtown is at an additional cost (USD 1 pp). Taxi ride is about 5 min and cost around USD 4 per cab. The walking distance from the port to the city is around 15 min (along the boardwalk).

Royal Caribbean will launch cruises from Barbados for the first time

Gene Sloan

Is Royal Caribbean trying to break free from U.S. government oversight of its cruises to the Caribbean ?

That'd be one way to read the Miami-based cruise giant's announcement Wednesday that it soon would launch its first-ever sailings to the Caribbean out of Bridgetown, Barbados .

Unlike Caribbean sailings out of such traditional Royal Caribbean hubs as PortMiami and Port Canaveral in Florida, Caribbean cruises out of Barbados are not subject to U.S. regulation, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) current, coronavirus-related ban on cruises.

Only cruises that touch U.S. waters are subject to such regulation.

Still, Royal Caribbean on Wednesday told TPG the CDC ban on cruising from U.S. ports had nothing to do with its decision to begin running some of its Caribbean cruises out of Barbados.

When asked if the CDC's current rules were a factor in the decision to move a ship to Barbados, a spokeswoman gave a straightforward, one-word answer: "No."

The CDC has blocked Royal Caribbean and all other lines that operate ships that carry more than 250 people from operating cruises out of U.S. ports since March.

In a statement accompanying the line's announcement on Wednesday, Royal Caribbean president and CEO Michael Bayley said the deployment was about offering its customers a new range of itineraries that it hadn't offered before.

"Sailing from the heart of the Windward Islands unlocks new memorable vacations to share with family and friends in breathtaking places, such as Grenada, St. Lucia and now St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago," Bayley said. "The pink-sand beaches and unexpected adventures across Barbados also make it an ideal destination for our guests to experience even more of the Caribbean charm and culture before or after their cruise."

Related: Here's when lines say they hope to resume sailings

The new sailings out of Barbados will take place on Royal Caribbean's 2,446-passenger Grandeur of the Seas, and start on Dec. 5.

The line plans three distinct itineraries out of Barbados, all departing on Sundays:

  • A seven-night "Southern Caribbean Explorer" itinerary with stops at Scarborough, Tobago; Port of Spain, Trinidad; St. George's, Grenada; Kingstown, St. Vincent; Roseau, Dominica; and Castries, St. Lucia.
  • A seven-night "Southern Caribbean Adventure" itinerary with stops at St. George's, Grenada; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; and Port of Spain, Trinidad.
  • A 14-night "Ultimate Caribbean" itinerary with stops at St. George's, Grenada; Kingstown, St. Vincent; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Oranjestad, Aruba (for an overnight); Willemstad, Curaçao; Port of Spain, Trinidad; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica.

The stops in Tobago, Trinidad and St. Vincent are firsts for the line.

Until the cruise industry began halting operations last March due to the escalating coronavirus pandemic, the ship that's heading to Barbados -- Grandeur of the Seas -- was based in Baltimore, Maryland.

Royal Caribbean — and the rest of the cruise industry — is grappling with a road map for a return to cruising in U.S. waters issued by the CDC that lays out a long period of testing and approvals before cruising can resume.

R elated: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

Issued in October as a "framework for conditional sailing" order, the road map includes a testing period for new anti-coronavirus protocols on ships that has yet to begin and may not begin for some time. After that, cruise operators can apply for what the CDC is calling a Conditional Sailing Certificate in a process that could take an additional 60 days.

Assuming the CDC sticks to the guidelines it has laid out in the order, it could be many months before cruising is allowed out of U.S. ports.

Barbados traditionally has served as a home port for very small vessels such as those operated by small-ship lines SeaDream Yacht Club and Star Clippers. But it does draw a few bigger ships that use it both as a home port and as a transit port.

Royal Caribbean ships have visited Barbados in the past in the midst of a cruise, but have never been based in the country.

As a foreign country not subject to the jurisdiction of the CDC, Barbados can host cruise ships wanting to restart operations this year even if the CDC maintains its ban on sailings.

Indeed, in November, Barbados welcomed the first cruise ship to attempt to restart operations in the Caribbean since the cruising shutdown began in March -- a 112-passenger SeaDream Yacht Club vessel called SeaDream 1. But the sailing, notably, did not go well. It ended with a COVID-19 outbreak and passengers quarantined in their cabins . The line subsequently canceled all remaining cruises for the winter season

Royal Caribbean is the world's biggest cruise line by passenger capacity, and it accounts for nearly 20% of all cruises taken worldwide. It often serves as a bellwether for the industry.

Is your cruise or flight changing? How Hurricane Beryl is disrupting Caribbean travel

Several major cruise companies were forced to change their itineraries due to Hurricane Beryl. Airline flights from Miami to the Caribbean also have been affected.

Here is a rundown:

Royal Caribbean

Miami-based Royal Caribbean Group made the following changes to its itineraries:

▪ Celebrity Beyond’s June 29 sailing will swap Kralendijk, Bonaire with Oranjestad, Aruba, on July 2 and move Kralendijk, Bonaire to July 4.

▪ Icon of the Seas’ June 29 sailing will now visit Cozumel, Mexico, and Costa Maya, Mexico, instead of Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

▪ Grandeur of the Seas’ July 1 sailing will now visit Yucatan (Progresso), Mexico on Day 4 and Cozumel, Mexico, on Day 3.

▪ Wonder of the Seas’ June 30 sailing will now have a Sea Day on Day 5 instead of visiting Roatan, Honduras, and will enjoy a visit to Nassau, Bahamas, on Day 6, instead of visiting Costa Maya, Mexico.

▪ Harmony of the Seas’ June 30 sailing will now visit Cozumel, Mexico on Day 3 and Costa Maya, Mexico on Day 4, instead of Roatan, Honduras.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement that “we are closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Beryl and are making adjustments to some of our Caribbean sailings for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew.” It said it would notify guests and travel advisors directly of any further changes.

Norwegian Cruise Line said it changed the itineraries for two ships, Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Breakaway, and sent a letter to guests.

▪ To its Norwegian Jade guests, Norwegian wrote in a Jun. 30, 2024 letter that it canceled calls to Falmouth, Jamaica, George Town, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico. It replaced them with San Juan, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The ship is scheduled to return to Cape Canaveral on July 6.

▪ For passengers on the Breakaway , the carrier said in a June 30 letter that it had chosen to take an alternative, safer route to circumvent the path of Beryl. “Despite our best efforts, and with the weather disturbances out of control, we have canceled our calls to Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.” The ship was scheduled to reach Roatan Bay Islands at 10 a.m. July 2 but was redirected to Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. It is also now stopping at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The ship is scheduled to return to PortMiami on July 7.

Norwegian also said that shore excursions booked through NCL for those destinations were automatically canceled and guests can expect that a “full monetary refund of the fare paid will be issued to your onboard account.’

As of 3 p.m. July 2, Carnival had changed the following itineraries:

▪ Carnival Horizon will add a visit to Nassau, The Bahamas on Friday, July 5 instead of visiting Cozumel, Mexico on Thursday, July 4. The ship’s visit to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on Wednesday, July 3 is canceled.

▪ Carnival Liberty is visiting Cozumel on Tuesday, July 2 instead of Friday, July 5.

MSC Cruises said it has not yet made any itinerary changes.

“At this time, we don’t foresee any itinerary changes for our U.S. vessels due to Hurricane Beryl if the storm maintains its projected path,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

Miami International Airport

At Miami International Airport as of 5:30 .p.m Tuesday, Hurricane Beryl led to seven canceled flights: two arrivals from San Juan and Barbados and five departures to Santo Domingo, Barbados and San Juan, according to Greg Chin, communications director at the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Still its overall percentage of on-time arrivals on July 2 was 86% and on-time departures was 78%, both well above its average.

It’s an improvement from Monday when seven arrivals and six departures were canceled. Affected islands were St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Barbados.

American Airlines issued a travel alert on Tuesday saying it would waive change fees for customers traveling through Cancun, Cozumel, Merida, and Tulum, Mexico. That’s if they are able to travel by July 10 and can make changes by July 5.

American Airlines operations in St. Vincent remain suspended due to airport closures. But the carrier has restarted operations in Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada, according to a statement sent by airline spokesperson Gianna Urgo.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

At FLL, the hurricane’s impact was less clear. JetBlue had one flight from Santo Domingo and one from Montego Bay, and both arrived at FLL during the day. There were arrivals still scheduled from Kingston at 9:17 p.m. and Montego Bay at 9:27 p.m. Airport officials advised travelers to call their airlines for the latest information.

Meanwhile, one departure left to Montego Bay. But another one scheduled at 9:30pm was canceled.

Hurricane Beryl forcing major cruise line to change itineraries - listed

At least 10 major cruise line ships have had to change their travel plans because of Hurricane Beryl.

The category five storm sweeping through the Caribbean started Monday morning, where sustained "life-threatening" winds of 130 mph have moved west at 20 mph.

It is reportedly the strongest storm the Windward Islands have seen since Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Tobago, while Martinique and Trinidad are under tropical storm warnings.

A cruise blog confirmed all of the known changed travel plans on major ships due to the storm, which are listed below.

All the major cruise line intinterary changes due to Hurricane Beryl

1. icon of the seas.

"The deep tropical Atlantic is very much alive very early in the season, and unfortunately is likely a harbinger of things to come this summer & fall," wrote Craig Setzter, Chief Meteorologist of Royal Caribbean Group, on X .

In an email sent to passengers aborad a ship that began sailing on June 29, Royal Caribbean confirmed that "high waves and strong winds" near its initial path in the Eastern Caribbean forced them to change course.

Instead of visiting St. Thomas and St. Maarten, the world's largest cruise ship will dock at Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico before spending the day at Perfect Day at CocoCay on July 5, as originally planned.

2. Wonder of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas has cancelled its visit to Roatán and Costa Maya. Instead, after calling at Cozumel on July 3, the ship will sail to Nassau, according to a post shared on Royal Caribbean Blog's discussion forum.

After the scheduled visit to CocoCay on July 1, it will spend a day at sea before arriving in Cozumel. Then, July 4 will also be spent at sea, followed by Nassau on July 5, and then another sea day on July 6 before returning to Port Canaveral.

3. Harmony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas was supposed to visit Roatán, Honduras on July 3; Costa Maya, Mexico on July 4; and Cozumel, Mexico on July 5.

However, it will now be arriving in Cozumel on July 2, earlier than planned, to remain a safe distance from the storm.

Afterward, they'll be docked alongside Icon of the Seas on July 3, rather than visit Roatán, Honduras, before spending three days at sea.

4. Norwegian Jade

A user shared Norwegian Jade's new itinerary on Reddit, which revealed that the ship will visit San Juan, Puerto Rico on July 2; Tortola, BVI on July 3; and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic on July 4 before returning to Port Canaveral, Florida.

It was initially slated to visit Falmouth, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico, the 93,558 gross registered ton (GRT) ship is headed for the Eastern Caribbean.

"The key takeaway for me is that the ship is still sailing, we will get a storm free vacation and just roll with the changes," they shared.

5. Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Breakaway's original itinerary would have taken guests on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise to Honduras, Belize, and Mexico.

However, the ship is now going to the Eastern Caribbean, where it will call at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic on July 2, according to Cruise Mapper ,.

Additionally, ANACARIBE, Roatán's port agency, took to Facebook to share that its visit for the week of July 1 was canceled.

6. Celebrity Beyond

Celebrity Beyond ship that set sail on June 29 sailing will still be traveling to the same locations, however, in a different order than originally planned.

"Our Captain along with our Chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, have been closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Beryl," read a letter sent to guests' staterooms.

"To ensure that we increase the distance & stay clear from the Hurricane Beryl offering comfortable sailing conditions we'll swap Kralendijk, Bonaire with Oranjestad, Aruba on July 2nd and move Kralendijk, Bonaire to July 4th."

7. Carnival Liberty

John Heald, Carnival's Brand Ambassador, took to Facebook to share an update regarding Carnival's operations.

"I have had many people ask about their cruise next week and for cruises through July even...The answer is that the Fleet Operations Center, the ship's Captains and the Beards all work together on this," he explains.

"They will never make any itinerary changes days in advance. That's because we want to try and give guests the cruise they booked..."

As of now, Carnival Liberty's 7-day Western Caribbean cruise from New Orleans will be first be visiting Cozumel then Belize City and Roatán instead of the oiringal order: Roatán, Belize City, and Cozumel.

8. Carnival Horizon

Heald shared another update on Facebook about the status of Carnival Horizon's 6-day Western Caribbean cruise.

Now, it will spend another day at sea and arrive in Ocho Rios earlier instead of visiting Grand Cayman.

"As Captain Area told his guests in an announcement...," he said. "Everyone's safety remains our priority and we will continue to sail a safe distance from the storm at all times."

9. Disney Fantasy

Intead of its original plan to call at Falmouth on July 4, a travel agent who works with Kingdom Elite Travel said it will skip Jamaica and spend an extra day at sea before arriving at Castaway Cay on July 5.

Cruise lines forced to change plans as Hurricane Beryl moves through the Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl has forced several major cruise lines to divert and change their itineraries as the Category 4 storm barrels through the Caribbean .

The storm, which broke records as both the earliest Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane , has already killed six people in the eastern Caribbean. Now, the life-threatening hurricane is moving towards Jamaica , where it‘s expected to hit on Wednesday. From there, the storm could reach as far north as Texas, according to predictions from the National Weather Service.

As a result, several Caribbean cruises are changing plans to keep their passengers safe.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, is among those changing their itineraries, the travel site Cruise reports. It will now forgo visits to two islands in the southeastern Caribbean, according to the site.

Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas has also canceled stops in Roatán and Costa Maya, instead opting to sail to Nassau as Hurricane Beryl rages on, according to Cruise.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean did not provide the exact number of ships impacted but said guests will be notified directly about itinerary changes.

“The safety of our guests, crew and communities we visit is our top priority,” the spokesperson said. “Along with our Chief Meteorologist, we are closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Beryl, and are making adjustments to some of our Caribbean sailings for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew.”

Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line almost entirely altered its week-long itinerary for the Norwegian Breakaway ship.

“To circumvent the path of hurricane Beryl and forecasted inclement weather, we have made the decision to take a safer, alternative route,” the cruise line said in a letter to passengers. “Despite our best efforts, and with the weather disturbances out of our control, we have canceled our calls to Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.”

Passengers have been sharing their experiences on social media.

“We left out on Harmony of the Seas this afternoon and they changed our itinerary to avoid the storm...cruise director said captain and crew will just find some great sunny weather and plan plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy onboard for 3 sea days,” one passenger wrote on Facebook.

“This is the reason I NEVER cruise during Hurricane season,” another user posted.

Hurricane Beryl has caused widespread devastation, destroying hundreds of homes and knocking out power to several communities.

The storm killed at least three people in Grenada and Carriacou. One of them died in St. George’s, Grenada’s capital after a tree fell on their home.

“This hits home,” Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said. “The deceased person is in fact the relative of one of the persons who spent the last 36 hours with us here at the National Emergency Operating Center.”

One person was also killed in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said on Monday.

Meanwhile, officials reported two deaths in northern Venezuela, as well as five people missing amid heavy rainfall from the hurricane, the Associated Press reports.
