You wouldn’t know it, but the hills in the Tonopah area are riddled with unimaginable amounts of turquoise. With a retail store and tour office located in the alluring Mizpah Hotel in downtown Tonopah, plan ahead for one of the most authentic Nevada experiences you could ask for: turquoise mining. Best yet, Tonopah lies just in between Reno and Las Vegas, which means it’s a manageable escape from the big city. Tours begin at the Otteson Turquoise Jewelry shop, where visitors will carpool out to the Royston Turquoise Mine, a short 30 minute drive from the Mizpah.

After relocating their family to the Tonopah area in 1958, the Otteson family has been running a gamut on the turquoise industry since. The Royston Turquoise Mine separates itself with distinction, as it is known worldwide for having a wide range of colors. While the deeper aquamarine hues are considered to be the most valuable, visitors can find just about every hue of blue greens at the Royston Turquoise Mine. From emerald greens to soft baby blues, the beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder and visitors will have the luxury of collection whatever they please.

As the Otteson’s control the majority of the Royston Turquoise mining district, they spend most of their days excavating this beautiful gemstone which is then processed, sorted and then sold to silversmiths around the world. Just like the Otteson’s, visitors will have the chance to dig and sort through turquoise-laden mounds, almost as far as the eye can see.

With each guest allotted one large bag for collection, they will spend three unforgettable hours prospecting their own finds. Afterward, visitors will be brought back to the Mizpah where the Otteson’s sort through your best pieces, ultimately cutting and polishing your most valuable stones. One thing is for certain, each guest will most definitely walk away with many stones. The question isn’t if you’ll find it, but how much of it and what grade you will uncover! The experience really comes full circle when guests are presented the option of having their turquoise transformed into jewelry, having the resident silversmith create your favorite bauble.

Before you secure your spot, be sure you’re prepped for the elements and remember to bring sunscreen, gloves, closed toed shoes, proper clothing [as weather may rapidly change], and lots of drinking water. Tours and held on Wednesday and Saturday during the warmer months of April through October. These four hour tours typically last from 10:00am to 2:00pm, and take you into the mine where several generations of the family owned operation reworking to excavate their own findings. As it is a modern operable mine, visitors are presented with a multitude of digging tools and a safety schpeel.

It doesnt get much more authentic with a Nevada experience like this. Definitely a must-see and do in the Silver State!

Where To Dig For Turquoise In Nevada | Turquoise Mines in Nevada Open To The Public

by rockseeker August 24, 2020, 9:55 pm updated March 2, 2022, 10:08 pm

At least half of the top-rated turquoise mines in the world are found in the state of Nevada, U.S.A. There are over 100 mines of various sizes located throughout the state, consistently bringing rare and beautiful specimens to the market.

Many of these mines are “hat mines,” which means the strata is so small it could be covered by a hat. These claims are privately owned, some in areas difficult to access most of the year, or they are deep underground. Other sites are owned by companies specializing in mining turquoise and other semiprecious gemstones.

  • How To Tell if Turquoise is Real or Fake
  • Chrysocolla vs Turquoise (How Are They Different?)

Where To Find Turquoise in Nevada

For rockhounds hoping to add a quality turquoise specimen or two to their collection, there are few existing mines open to the public. In fact, the only advertised site for public touring and collecting in Nevada is owned by the Otteson family in the Royston district of Nevada.

Otteson Family Mines

This family has created a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about the history and process of turquoise mining along with personally collecting specimens. Since this is a rare publicly accessible mine, I’ll include some details about the mine’s history and what to expect from the tour.

Since settling in the area in 1958, the Otteson’s claims have continued to expand. At present, at least 13 family members work active claims in the Royston District. The family has partnered with Tonopah’s historic Mizpah Hotel, and visitors staying overnight there receive a discount on tour fees.

The Tonopah Historic Mining Park is located directly behind the hotel. The park offers a glimpse into mining past and present and includes trails leading to various mining features, such as hoist houses and a powder magazine. There are also viewing areas for now-closed silver and gold mines.

The Visitor Center has parking for easy access, and the many geological displays offer a look at local resources. If this is your first turquoise expedition, this is a good place to see turquoise rough and get an idea of what to look for.

What To Expect

The Royston Turquoise Mine is one of the most prolific in the country, and the Otteson’s conduct Tours Monday through Saturday year-round, except for major holidays. The fees, which could always change before the next season, are currently as follows:

  • Half Day, 8 am-1 pm, $150 per person, $250 per couple.
  • All Day, 8 am-5:30 pm, $300 per person, $500 per couple
  • Kids dig for free.
  • Special or private tours available by appointment with 2 weeks notice

Reservations are required for all tours, and digging is limited to 1 bag or bucket per adult. Collection bags are provided at the site. No matter where you choose to stay in town, all dig attendees will meet their guide leader as a group in the grand lobby of the Mizpah and will caravan together to the collection site, which is located about 30 miles outside of town.

What To Take

Nevada is a state comprised mainly of high desert climates. Remember to take sunscreen, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and a shade-providing hat. You’ll also need lots of drinking water and snacks. Gloves are recommended for handling rough stone along with closed-toed shoes for rocky terrain.

Pierside Straw Hat

The Otteson’s bring heavy equipment to collection sites to break up tailing for tour participants. Just look for color. These mines produce a great variety of turquoise, from a whole spectrum of blue-greens to baby blue.

On the market today, turquoise is available from white to dark blue or green. The perfect hue is in the eye of the beholder, and you may find several shades of specimens during your visit. You’ll need to bring your own tools, including a rock pick or hammer. A hand sledge might also come in handy for more experienced rockhounds.

Estwing Rock Hammer With Pointed Tip & Shock Reduction Grip

When You Get There

Once you’ve arrived on site there will be a short safety briefing. Then you’re free to start digging. After extracting your specimens from the available tailings, the tour will return to the cutting shop, where a few of your best finds will be cut and polished.

If you have questions or need additional information for your trip, you can call directly at (775)482-4832, or visit any of several websites about the facilities and tours.

  • How To Determine What Turquoise Is Worth

Collecting Turquoise On Public Lands

For die-hard, off the grid rockhounds, there are a number of areas in Nevada where concentrated turquoise mining takes place. With a bit of research, you can find these areas and the mines located there. The mines themselves are private property, but the Nevada Bureau of Land Management (BLM) allows limited collecting on public lands for non-commercial specimens. Go to the BLM site for specific rules and limitations.

Where To Go

A few areas to look at are Lander County in central Nevada, the southern slope of the Pilot Mountain Range about 50 miles west of Salt Lake, and Crescent Valley south of I-80 between Battle Mountain and Carlin. There have also been claims around Austin and the Carico Lake area in the central part of the state.

Turquoise mining can be challenging and labor-intensive. Small veins can quickly disappear or require heavy equipment to excavate. That kind of land disturbance is not allowed by the BLM, so don’t expect to come away with a collection of quality pieces on your own without a lot of sweat and manual labor.

Royston is a turquoise mine located within the Royston District near Tonepah, Nevada. The Royston District consists of several mines including Royston, Royal Blue, Oscar Wehrend and Bunker Hill. The mines in this district were discovered as early as 1902; in fact, Royston is the oldest patented mine in Nevada. While Royston is considered an active mine, it is small. Originally a tunnel mine, it is now an open pit. According to one of the current miners, Royston turquoise is known as “grass roots,” which means the best deposits are found within ten feet of the surface.  Royston is a good producer of high quality stones. Royston turquoise is known for its beautiful deep green to rich light blue colors. These unique color ranges are what make this stone so special. Royston stones are often two-tone, displaying both dark and light green and sometimes blue. Royston has a heavy matrix ranging from dark brown to gold in color. This matrix makes for beautiful combinations with the color variations of the stone. Royston turquoise is considered very collectible and a good investment. Ottesons and several other miners still find a varied amount of Royston.

Royston Fun Facts

  • Royston is the oldest patented mine in Nevada (1902).
  • Royston is an active mine operated by the Otteson family. In 1944 Lynn Otteson and family leased the Royston claim from miner Lee F. Hand, who also worked Blue Gem. His old house still stands at the claim. Lynn Otteson ran the show from 1958 to 1985. Since ’85 Dean & Donna Otteson have owned the mine.
  • You can visit this mine and look for turquoise yourself, “$100 gets you a bucket you can fill.”

Destination Spotlight: Mining for Treasure at the Royston Turquoise Mine

What is Royston Turquoise?

Royston turquoise is a type of turquoise gemstone from the Royston mining district located in Nevada. This area is known for producing turquoise of exceptional quality and color variety. Royston turquoise is often celebrated for its rich color spectrum that can range from a deep green to light blue, often with a brown or golden matrix that adds to its uniqueness. The matrix—the host rock in which the material is found—can vary greatly in pattern, making each stone distinctive.

Characteristics

  • Color : The colors can vary from deep blues to various shades of green. Sometimes, a single stone can display multiple shades, making it especially sought-after.
  • Matrix : The matrix can be dark brown, golden, or even yellow, adding character to the stone. The matrix patterns are usually very dynamic, contributing to the stone’s aesthetic appeal.
  • Hardness : Turquoise is generally a soft mineral, but Royston turquoise is often stabilized to increase its hardness and durability, making it suitable for various types of jewelry.
  • Transparency : Royston turquoise is opaque, which is a characteristic shared by most types of turquoise. This feature enhances its ability to stand alone as a centerpiece in jewelry.

Applications in Jewelry

Royston turquoise is highly valued in the jewelry market and is commonly used in a variety of settings, including rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Its rich color and unique matrix patterns make it a popular choice for both traditional Southwestern American jewelry and contemporary designs.

Market Value

The value of Royston turquoise can vary depending on factors such as color, matrix pattern, and overall quality. Stones with vibrant colors and intricate matrix patterns are generally more valuable. Due to its rarity and exceptional quality, Royston turquoise often commands a higher price compared to more common types of turquoise.

Common Divide on Opinion

While the uniqueness of Royston turquoise is widely appreciated, there is some debate among gem enthusiasts and collectors about the merits of stabilization—a process that uses resins to enhance the stone’s hardness and color. Purists may prefer natural, untreated stones, arguing that stabilization detracts from the stone’s inherent qualities. However, others contend that stabilization extends the stone’s durability and beauty, making it more accessible for everyday wear.

Given its aesthetic versatility and the high regard for its quality, Royston turquoise remains a sought-after gemstone, particularly for those interested in unique, high-quality jewelry.

Royston Turquoise Mine

Experience the allure of Royston turquoise, a premium gemstone sourced from Nevada’s Otteson family-operated mines. Communication

The stone is believed to enhance clear communication and truthful expression, fostering better understanding between people. Some attribute this quality to the sky-blue hues commonly found in turquoise, which are associated with the Throat Chakra.

Royston Turquoise Mine

High Grade Royston Turquoise

Royston Turquoise comes from the Royston mining district located near Tonopah, Nevada and has been mined since the early 1900s. "Royston Turquoise" originally consisted of four old Turquoise claims located within the Royston range: Bunker Hill, Easter Blue, Oscar Wehrend, and Royal Blue. The Royal Blue mine was responsible for the majority of the turquoise mined in the area and is often referred to as Royston Royal Blue.

Royston Turquoise Cabs

The Royston area mines produces some incredible turquoise ranging in color from a deep sky blue to dark greens. Often the colors run together in the same stone with golden brown mottled or webbed matrix. The mines currently produce some very high grade material, but in limited quantities. Visitors to the Royal Blue mine can currently pay to dig through the large tailing piles. Currently, the most active Royston mines are the Royal Blue, Montezuma, Aztec and High Grade Ridge mines.

Because of the many years of mining and intermixing of rough, most of the turquoise from this area will simply be identified as Royston turquoise.

Many healers who practice healing through crystals and stones highly claim that Turquoise has powers to detoxify poison, pollution, and alcohol from the human body.

Mental Healing:

Royston turquoise is considered a stone of communication by those who practice crystal healing. Modern age healers believe that turquoise contains the powers to heal or eradicate fears of people, such as the fear of public speaking. The stone enables the person to speak more confidently, creatively, and fluently. Royston turquoise also helps in the improvement of the mental and emotional state. It makes humans more stable, optimistic, empathic, creative, intuitive, and happy. Once the mental and emotional state is calmer, it helps the person to have profound self-realization, which allows him/her communicating more freely and strengthens bonds of family and friendship. Turquoise stones are treated in many different ways, some radical and some more permanent than others. People use waxing and oiling on the turquoise gem, which may enhance its color and features, yet this does not last permanently.

Since Royston turquoise is a phosphate mineral, it can be extremely fragile and sensitive. Cosmetics or any perfume will deteriorate the quality of the stone and possibly alter the color of the turquoise gems. Cleaning fluids, jewelry, and skin oils also affect aggressively.
