EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

TAUCK'S YELLOW ROADS – Journey from Stockholm to North Zealand, from Copenhagen to Oslo and on to the fjords of Norway

A private, after-hours visit to Stockholm's Vasa Museum introduces maritime treasures – without crowds – including the  Vasa,  an intact 17th-century ship

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Guided visit to the Gol Stave Church

Exclusive early-entry private visit to Denmark's historic Frederiksborg Palace

Enjoy the natural beauty aboard a ferry cruise on the blue waters of Geirangerfjord

Take a "troll car" up to Briksdal Glacier for a trail walk to spectacular views of the glacier plunging to the valley below

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Sweden offers a modern take on history, combining its medieval heritage and maritime treasures with an urban-cool ambiance and staggering scenic beauty. Denmark is a rainbow of islands, gardens, schooners and crowning gems where mermaids and storytellers inspire new stories. Fjords head up a parade of natural wonders in coastal Norway, ferrying you aboard boats, troll car and private coach to glaciers, waterfalls, farms, country hotels and homes of artists who find music for their soul here.

Grieg's troldhaugen in bergen, visit edvard grieg's home & museum at troldhaugen.

One of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. You'll enjoy a guided visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen, a complex in Bergen comprising Grieg's former villa (Troldhaugen), where he resided with his wife Nina from 1885 until his death in 1907; the couple's gravesite; the hut where Grieg composed his music; a museum dedicated to his life and work, completed in 1995; and the Troldsalen concert hall.

Denmark's Frederiksborg Palace

Early-entry private visit to frederiksborg palace, a danish renaissance masterpiece.

Dating to the early 1600s as a royal residence for the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederiksborg Castle – built atop three islands in a lake near Copenhagen – has been through many trials, tribulations and changes over the centuries. Following a disastrous fire in the mid-19th century, this Danish Renaissance masterpiece was reconstructed and restored according to its original plans and drawings. Today, it's the Danish Museum of National History… and you're invited to discover its grandeur on an early-opening private visit.

We really enjoyed our night in tiny Flam. The fjords and glaciers of Norway were absolutely stunning.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Denmark, Sweden and Norway; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,  you should contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

The deposit amount is $600 per person

Final Payments:

Final Payment is due at Tauck's Wilton, CT office  60 days before departure. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Luggage Handling and Restrictions

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you are a resident of the U.S.,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the countries visited on this tour. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information about vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country,  please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries visited on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Scandinavia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture may present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. The visits to the palaces and castles, including Frederiksborg and Rosenborg, require climbing some steep stairways and walking moderate distances from the motor coach park to the entrance of the sites as well as within the grounds. There is a forty-five minute stroll on day 13 inside Vigeland Park in Oslo mostly on flat terrain. Perhaps the most challenging walk is at Briksdal glacier on day 9; the twenty-minute walk to the glacier is over rocky, uneven terrain. Although it can be rewarding and even exciting to get close to the glacier, the walk may not be for everyone.

All hotels on this itinerary have elevators, with the exception of the Toftaholm Herrgård due to the historic nature of the property. If you have difficulty walking, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that a room close to the public areas may be requested.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. The smaller hotels in Scandinavia tend not to have designated non-smoking rooms although they will make every effort to accommodate this request.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The southern halves of Sweden and Norway share in the climactic benefits of the Gulf Stream with Denmark. Their temperate climate has few extremes of heat or cold. The average high temperatures from May through September range from 55 to 75˚F (13 to 24˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). The lowland area around Oslo in Norway is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer. Not only is Bergen the warmest city in Norway, but it is also probably the wettest, averaging approximately 80 in (2,000 mm) per year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking  here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip.  Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The summers in Scandinavia are warm, but medium-weight sweaters and jackets are recommended. A waterproof raincoat with a removable lining will give you the versatility you will need in this northern climate. A topcoat is recommended for spring and fall.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee; however, these fees may be very expensive.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Scandinavia:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Land of the midnight sun and home to great natural spectacles including the Northern Lights , you’re never far from the pristine wilderness of Norway’s fjords or Sweden’s forests on a tour to Scandinavia. Let’s not forget, holidays to Scandinavia’s urban jungles are just as rewarding, with world-renowned museums and much-loved nightspots.

Tour Highlights

  • Rent a kayak from the water’s edge and paddle across the crystal-clear waters of Oslo’s fjords. At 100 km in length there’s plenty of opportunity to explore its small islands, and hidden coves, while always in sight of the Norwegian capital.
  • Get your kit off and plunge into one of Scandinavia’s saunas. A way of life in the region, they are a popular way of spending time with friends old and new, and come in all manner of styles, from the ultra-modern to those registered as national monuments.
  • Head beyond the Arctic Circle and you’ll not only encounter snow even in the height of summer (Santa Claus has his village in Rovaniemi, Finland ) but also the midnight sun. In winter, enjoy a fantastic opportunity to marvel at the Northern Lights.
  • Enjoy a night out at Tivoli in Copenhagen, the second oldest amusement park and pleasure garden in the world. First opened in 1843, its perhaps best known for its wooden rollercoaster, Rutschebanen, built more than a hundred years ago.
  • Splash about in Finland’s Lakeland. The southeast of the country is home to most of the country’s 180,000 lakes, which offer chances to swim, fish, and even keep a lookout for endangered species such as the Saimaa ringed seal.

Travel Tips

  • June to September is best time for sightseeing and experiencing the midnight sun, while the winter months offer wondrously snowy panoramas and the best chance of catching the northern lights
  • Scandinavia is an expensive destination to visit, but a trip to Scandinavia doesn’t have to break the bank. Each capital runs free city walking tours by volunteers eager to impress, who have a great knowledge of the cheapest places to eat and drink in town too.
  • Scandinavians speak a wide range of languages and are generally fluent in English.
  • If you’re thinking of renting a car in Norway, opt for an electric version, which has the benefit of free parking and charging points (of which there are many), and exemption from road tolls and even ferry fees
  • Scandinavian buildings are very well insulated against the winter chill. The downside of this is that they can be rather hot and stuffy during the summer, so pack night clothing accordingly.

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days) reviewer 1

  • AM Anthony · 27th August 2018 Excellent tour though a bit pricey. Excursions alone were $2000 Australian dollars for two but probably reflects Scandinavia generally. Most days held great interest and sights. Only two were more about getting from A to B. Trip date: August 2018
  • D DeniseCronin · 12th August 2018 The experience I had on the tour far exceeded my expectations. It was my first time on a tour, travelling on my own, and I didn't really know what to expect. I found I was put at ease right from the beginning when we all first met in London. Kassie... Show more Trip date: July 2018

FAQs About Our Scandinavia Tours

After landing at Keflavík Airport, you will travel to your hotel in Reykjavík. Located in the heart of Iceland’s capital city, Hotel Borg offers the best in both style and comfort. Following check-in, connect with your Tour Director before a visit to the Sky Lagoon. Relax in the warm waters of the geothermal lagoon and soak off your jet lag as your gaze upon incredible views of the North Atlantic. End your day with a gourmet kickoff dinner where you will get to know your fellow travelers and taste delicious Icelandic dishes. Your group tour of Iceland has officially started!

After breakfast, join a driving tour of Iceland’s capital. Notable sights include the famous Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall and the unique Sun Voyager sculpture. Following your tour, you will have free time to experience the city on your own. End your day with a delectable dinner and a drive to view the Northern Lights, if the skies are clear that night. If they are not, don’t worry. We will have many other opportunities!

Day 3 is dedicated to Iceland’s Golden Circle, which is made up of three must-see sights: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Thingvellir National Park. Nearby, at Fridheimar, you will enjoy a beautiful show with Icelanic horses and some organic, tomato-based delicacies as well. Following your guided tour of the Golden Circle, we will drive to Landeyjahöfn harbor and board a ferry to the Westman Islands. The short 45-minute boat ride will give you a new perspective of Iceland’s south coast. When the ferry docks on the main island, Heimaey, you might even spot a brave sheep grazing on the rocky cliffs surrounding you! Enjoy a delectable dinner at Hotel Vestmannaeyjar, your cozy accommodation for the evening.

Our private tours allow travelers to explore Scandinavian destinations with programs offering a great balance between pre-arranged activities and free time to explore. When implementing one of our private programs for you, we handle all the logistics involved, including: hotels, airport transfers, transportation from city to city and all guided activities and excursions. You will not be with a Tour Director throughout the program, but you will enjoy a number of sightseeing experiences led by experienced local guides. We can work with your desired dates, provided that availability exists at the many services involved in your program. This option is ideal for travelers who enjoy traveling independently and with a higher degree of flexibility to explore each location on their own.

Technically, Scandinavia refers primarily to Norway, Denmark and Sweden. When thinking of Nordic Countries, add to the list Finland and Iceland as well. Discover Scandinavia Tours can take you to any location in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Currently we also offer extensions in Estonia, which is of particularly convenient access when visiting Finland, given that Tallinn – Estonia’s beautiful capital – can be reached by a short ferry ride from Helsinki.

Simple: just call us at  800-936-2814  and talk to one of our Scandinavia specialists. Alternatively, you can email us at [email protected]

If you are interested in a group tour, you can book any departure as long as there are seats available (but remember: we have a maximum of 12 seats per departure, so booking early is recommendable). If you want a private tour, you can book as far as 2 years in advance. For last-minute travelers, please keep in mind that we need a minimum of 30 days to implement a private program.

With our group tours of Scandinavia you can choose from a number of fixed departures throughout the year. If you need more flexible dates, our private tours allow us to work with any dates you have in mind, provided that we find adequate availability at all hotels and other services included in your particular program.

Yes, we do. For details regarding commissions, please visit our TRAVEL AGENT portal.

You will find our cancellation policy, along with all our terms and conditions,  RIGHT HERE.

In short, you can typically view the Northern Lights between September and March. But if you really want a memorable Northern Lights vacation, we created an entire blog post dedicated to this question, which you can read  RIGHT HERE.

You most certainly can! Just email us ( [email protected] ) or call us ( 800-936-2814 ) and we will start your dream Scandinavian vacation with a free consultation.

How to Visit Oslo, According to Someone Who Spent 6 Years in Scandinavia

Oslo, Norway, is a year-round destination — with saunas, fjord cruises, and fascinating museums.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, best neighborhoods.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

The mere idea of a summer day in a place like Oslo — home to subzero waters and black-metal music — might seem like a mirage. But the summers here are famously light and hot, with the Norwegian capital being an ideal playground for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and hiking, replacing the darker months’ skiing, ice bathing, and roaring fireplaces.

Beyond its outdoor pursuits, Oslo 's eco-conscious efforts exceed most cities. In 2016, it introduced a “climate budget” with a goal of reducing emissions by 95 percent by 2030; two years later, 1,000 trees were planted for the Future Library project ; and in 2019, the city was crowned the European Green Capital .

Oslo’s young professionals and creatives may scatter themselves among the hip, diverse neighborhoods of Grünerløkka and Tøyen, or the more upscale Frogner and St. Hanshaugen (picture Parisian-like facades and tree-lined streets with mansions), but the main thing this city’s dwellers have in common is their commitment to time spent in nature. Visitors will find eco-friendly hotels committed to eliminating waste and championing reusable materials, restaurants that support third-world communities, and spas and saunas dispersed between the city’s central harbor and the dense surrounding forest.

At a time when travelers are becoming aware of how their leisure choices impact the environment, it’s interesting to see Oslo’s dedication to learning about and introducing the bigger ideas behind eco work. September’s Oslo Innovation Week, for example, is largely digital, with the aim of solving real global challenges through entrepreneurship, innovation, and green tech — the subjects of its panels include energy, circular economy, and life-science investment. For anyone interested in such, its panels and events make it a good time to visit.

For me, having spent six years in Scandinavia, and long summers and winters in Norway , Oslo became a base for months at a time. Most favor Danish and Swedish coastal cities for their accessibility. Like any capital, the Norwegian city is fast-changing and home to global diasporas that help shape the identity of this fjord-laden delight.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Any trip to Oslo calls for a bracing ice dip and sauna session.
  • History buffs might note the elaborate original fixtures of Sommerro, a former electricity factory
  • Restaurant Alex is the newest place to see and be seen, yet it's ultra-welcoming.
  • Marvel at Vigeland, a park displaying nude sculptures.
  • Go cross-country skiing or hiking, or simply enjoy the view from the top, at Nordmarka.

Francisco Nogueira

Not long after Sommerro's fall 2022 opening, the hotel and spa made its way on Travel + Leisure' s list of the 100 best new hotels in the world . Its electricity factory history is felt while the mid-century interior design and moody lighting offer a polished feel. The 231 rooms of various sizes include annexes, sloped ceilings, and exquisite upholstery, plus top-tier amenities and service. Don't miss the newly opened Izakaya, which serves a Nordic-Japanese menu.

Villa Inkognito

The next-door sibling property of Sommerro, Villa Inkognito is housed in a former private residence dating back to 1870. It was transformed into offices for the city’s first electrical company, and later served as the Algerian embassy. The 11-room retreat is also available on a full buyout basis for an ultra-special trip, and each room is meant to feel like a home away from home.

Amerikalinjen

This revved-up former Norwegian America Line headquarters toots its own stylish horn. The cheery staff resurrects the bustling energy of the storied spot , which is decked out in snappy tailoring from Norwegian fashion favorite Holzweiler. Guests can also expect a chic library, original elevators, and ceiling stuccos that remain across the rooms.

The Well Spa & Hotel

The Well Spa & Hotel provides a holistic approach to health — meaning uniform bathing suits and gowns, a zero-digital policy in restaurants and communal areas, excellent menus, relaxing treatments, and a decidedly tranquil feel in the stunning sculpture garden. Located in Sofiemyr, about 20 minutes from Oslo's city center via its own shuttle, the impressively vast property makes for a divine solo sojourn or a social spa trip.

Clarion Hotel The Hub

Located close to Oslo Central Station, Clarion Hotel The Hub stands out with its magnificent lobby showcasing marble features, a sumptuous bar, and refurbished rooms.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

With rugged natural terrain skirting the entire city, it’s no wonder most extra-curricular activities here revolve around getting outdoors. A winding, 20-minute tram ride up Nordmarka takes visitors to the place where the trees for Future Library are planted. Take the lift to ski jump Holmenkollen, then stop by Holmenkollen Restaurant for tartare, a hot toddy, and mountaintop views.

Sauna and Swim

In the winter, the adrenaline rush is rewarding, and come summer, the waters are refreshing. At Badstuforening , it's $25 for a two-hour communal seat; enjoy the peaceful camaraderie (and views) of this sweet setup. Just make sure to bring a towel. Alternatively, try Salt , a sauna and art space that's set opposite the Snøhetta-designed opera house and hosts concerts, plays, and exhibitions.

Museum Hopping

Explore the intricate history of explorer life at the Fram , which contains the reconstructed remnants of the ship that raced to the South Pole, headed by Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen. In the center of town, check out the Nobel Peace Center for its permanent and roving collections of significant human rights accomplishments. An unsung gem is the Emanuel Vigeland Museum , complete with frescoes and gong bath concerts. Tip: Plan in advance planning due to the location's unusual opening hours.

Silent Fjord Cruise

Take a silent electric fjord tour on the Brim Explorer , with multiple options to suit your mood. There’s yoga on the deck, an elegant brunch, or a dinner cruise. Other perks of this slick and small liner include less crowds and an intimate setting for your crew.

Courtesy of Restaurant Alex

Restaurant Alex

An overnight success with everyone from students to billionaires, this restaurant calls for advance reservations. Emerging chef Alexandra Ek guides a well-priced brasserie-style menu, while the resident DJs don’t frown upon dancing on tables after hours.

Sabi Omakase

Japanese cuisine this far from East Asia has a terrific head start thanks to the abundance of cold sea. At Sabi Omakase , guests can expect a carefully composed seasonal menu that's served in a harmonious, low-lit space. Interestingly, the chef used to be a surgeon — the locale and its offerings are not remiss of precision, and, yes, you’re safe in his hands.

Solsiden Restaurant

Solsiden is a fail-safe institution for seafood on the water, dapper and light-filled with its glass structure. Put on a pretty dress or shirt and enjoy the harbor breeze at this summer-only restaurant. Order the renowned shellfish tower and the Champagne.

It’s no secret Norway can whip the wallet. This fresh and lovely Asian noodle joint is a way of preserving splurges for another day while still giving you the opportunity to eat well. Plus, every purchase feeds a child in Africa, where founder André Evju spent lots of time.

Plant-filled with kitschy white tiles and pink lighting, Njokobok offers Senegal-style community dining. Order the jollof rice, grilled dorada, or whole lamb and indulge in the location's famous onion sauce three ways. Oslo has a sizable African diaspora, so you'll find good Ethiopian, Eritrean, Moroccan, and Somali restaurants throughout the city.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

While winter is for snow and snuggles, summer in Oslo is all about swimming and seafood.

Spring (or shoulder season), meanwhile, is ideal for soaking up art, history, opera, and the boutique shops. June through September sees music festivals such as By:Larm and Øya , and winter is prime time for ski tournaments, cozying up in a cabin, and cold-weather rituals like ice bathing and relaxing in a sauna.

The main thing to consider is winter's darkness — there are nearly 20 hours under cover, compared to summer’s two-hour nights.

Flying into Gardermoen is ideal for easy access into the city — it's about 20 minutes via speed train. Arriving at another airport means a long bus ride to the city, so don't be duped by the cheaper inter-European flights to Torp Sandefjord Airport. Another way to arrive is by cruise — check out eco operators such as Hurtigruten. You might also consider the spectacular, nearly eight-hour, cross-country Bergen Line route — often dubbed one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. If you're arriving from elsewhere in the country, domestic airline Widerøe is a great option.

Andrea Pistolesi/Getty Images

This east-of-central pocket is having a resurgence, thanks to the introduction of some trendy bars and restaurants, but its leafy, suburban feel is enduring. In addition to its waterside location, there are gorgeous local bistros, Frogner Church, grand foreign embassies, and lots of indie cinemas here. Plus, you're still a stone's throw from the theaters, palace, Litteraturhuset (House of Literature), and Vigelandsparken (Vigeland sculpture park).

The peninsula of Bygdøy has not only amassed some of the capital’s best museums and relics, but it’s also home to idyllic beaches — Huk, Paradisbukta, and Bygdøy Sjøbad — for swimming and picnicking. For something a bit more cultural, browse the collections at the Fram, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Oscarshall, or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. The Gol Stave church is also a must-see.

Day Trip to Drøbak

The wider area of Oslofjord is full of small towns, and picturesque-as-they-come Drøbak is a wonderful jaunt for the day. Just a 40-minute drive (or 90-minute scenic ferry ride) outside of Oslo, Drøbak is home to the dramatic Oscarsborg Fortress , great shellfish in cute old buildings, a summertime opera, and even a quirky year-round Christmas shop.

How to Get Around

Once you arrive in Oslo via the Flytoget airport transfer, walking is doable and preferable to most. An Oslo Pass is handy for riding the tram, train, bus, and ferry. E-scooters can be less arduous than biking if you need to dash somewhere, but locals prefer a more relaxed and measured approach to getting around.
