In comparison to many cities around the world, Auckland, New Zealand is brand spanking new. The oldest buildings date back to the 1840s and most of the downtown area has already gone through several major overhauls to create sleek and shiny reused spaces.

There are many things to do in Auckland – and the best way to get acquainted with the city is on an Auckland Walking Tour. To help other travelers to New Zealand, we created a One Day in Auckland Itinerary that includes a self-guided walking tour and one of the best half day trips from Auckland to Devonport.

One Day in Auckland Itinerary Outline

Visitors with just 1 day in Auckland have an array of options for what to see and do, and very little time in which to do them! We recommend spending an Auckland one-day trip seeing the top sights and experiencing the city on foot. Many Auckland tourist attractions are located in the heart of the city – and others are just a ferry ride away. We have made planning what to do in Auckland For A Day simple with our easy-to-follow Auckland Itinerary 1 Day.

We begin our day of Auckland sightseeing in the center of the city – taking in sights like the historic Civic Theater, iconic Sky Tower and revitalized harbor. We continue our Auckland tour as we navigate to the west, to see the oldest part of the city and landmark War Memorial Museum. We complete our walk by strolling back to the center through spacious parks and the university campus. To end the day, we hop on a ferry to one of the best Auckland getaways: Devonport…just 12 minutes away by boat!

Self-Guided Auckland City Tour

View from the Auckland Walking Tour Skyline, NZ

While the top places to see in Auckland are located in close proximity to each other, there is some walking between the sights. The total distance of our walking tour in central Auckland is seven miles (and doesn’t include the distances covered in Devonport at the end of the day). Be sure to pack good city walking shoes for your trip !

Our free Auckland walking tour highlights the top Auckland attractions. Visitors can simply enjoy the city by walking the route…or choose to visit the Auckland sights along the way. Three top Auckland activities that are along the route are soaring to the top of the Sky Tower ( buy tickets in advance ), eating lunch in the Wynyard Quarter and visiting the Auckland War Museum, which can include a cultural performance ( get your tickets today ).

If you plan on entering any of these top Auckland places to visit, be sure to calculate it into your itinerary and keep an eye on the time.

Top Tip : Our city tour of Auckland covers some ground! Visitors who want to see the sights without the long walk can use the Auckland sightseeing bus. We include details of the Hop On Hop Off bus – which covers all of the places to visit in Auckland on our route (and more!) – at the end of the post.

Go On A Self-Guided Auckland City Tour, New Zealand

Okay, we’ve given you an overview of what 1 Day in Auckland will look like, so let’s get started! Shall we? Our Auckland in a Day route begins at…

Britomart (and Auckland Ferry Building)

View of the Ferry Building, Auckland, New Zealand

The central transportation hub for Auckland, the former post office, is a redeveloped district for all things fashion and food. Britomart is an ideal starting point, as it is a railway station, bus station and also near the ferry terminal if you’re coming to Auckland for the day via boat.

Set off on your Auckland walk, heading south on…

Queen Street

Walk south on Queen Street, Auckland’s shopping street. One of the main thoroughfares since the 1840s, Queen Street has been traversed by horse-drawn buses (circa late 1800s) and electric trams (circa early 1900s). Queen Street has also served as the site of numerous parades, demonstrations and Auckland celebrations. The street was heavily renovated in the early 2000s to be more pedestrian friendly and improve downtown Auckland’s walkability score.

Take time to window-shop on Queen St. and then make your way to…

Aotea Square

Auckland Walking Tour 1 Day, New Zealand

Aotea Square is a lovely green space in the city center of Auckland. Built in 1911, the Edwardian Auckland Town Hall sits just across the street and since 2016 has been home to the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. The original Town Hall Organ is the oldest musical instrument in New Zealand and underwent a complete restoration in 2010.

View of Aotea Square, Civic Theatre, Auckland, NZ

Just north of Aotea Square is the Civic Theater, or just The Civic, that opened in 1929 and is the largest surviving atmospheric cinema in Australasia. After a hefty restoration in 1999, it still serves as a multi-purpose theater featuring musical acts, plays and film festivals.

Walk through/around Aotea Square to Mayoral Drive/Albert Street and walk north to Victoria Street. Turn west (left) and walk to…

Sky Tower Auckland

Looking up at the Sky Tower Auckland, New Zealand

The iconic Sky Tower landmark, reaching 328 meters (1076 feet) into the Auckland skyline, it is truly one of the city highlights! Created as an entertainment hub, spending time in the tower is one of the fun things to do in Auckland. In addition to the viewing platforms, there is a revolving restaurant and the daring SkyWalk .

True thrill-seekers can bungee jump from the building at the SkyJump attraction. We were not so brave, so instead found a spot across the street where we could watch the bungee jumpers plunge from the 629 foot (192m) mark.

From the Sky Tower, walk south on Federal Street to…

St. Patrick’s Cathedral Auckland

Interior, St. Patrick's Cathedral Auckland, New Zealand

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland, sits on the site of the first Catholic church of Auckland, which was built in the 1840s. Step inside to see the sun shimmering through the beautiful stained-glass windows.

Walk west on Wyndham Street to Nelson Street. Turn north (right) and walk (the street changes name to Market Place) to Pakenham Street. Turn west (left) and follow the street to Viaduct Harbor. Turn south (left) and walk around the harbor into the…

Wynyard Quarter, Auckland

Wynyard Quarter Shops, Auckland, New Zealand

Hopefully by now you are getting hungry, because there is no better place in Auckland for fish and chips than in Wynyard Quarter. The revitalized district is largely built on reclaimed land. Now locals and visitors alike flock to the area for seafood, cocktails and good times.

Auckland Fish Market Building, New Zealand

Stroll through the Auckland Fish Market , which is stocked with the morning’s fresh catch, and surrounded with some of Auckland’s best restaurants ready to serve it up to you. Looking for Lobster? Check out Lobster & Tap. Oysters on your NZ-must-eat list? Drop into Billy Pot. Not sure what you fancy? Head to the Market Galley for some of it all or just post-up at The Wreck for a beverage!

Alternatively, walk one block north to the harbor-facing North Wharf for lunch with a sea view. Good George Brewing has a solid lineup of craft beer and an excellent food menu to back them up!

From Wynyard Quarter, walk east to…

Viaduct Harbor

One Day in Auckland Itinerary, New Zealand Best Things To Do

Once a busy, commercial port, Viaduct Harbour is another one of Auckland’s successful renovation projects that has evolved into a trendy place to live, work and eat. Take some time to enjoy the view and people watching.

Relax at Viaduct Harbor, Auckland, New Zealand

Grab a seat on one of the large wooden loungers or sit on the steps that lead right down to the water. Cross the 100-meter-long Wynyard Crossing Bridge onto Te Wero Island, then take a stroll to the end of Princes Wharf.

Walk east past the the Ferry Building and continue east on Quay Street to The Strand. Turn south (right) and walk a short distance to Gladstone Road. Turn east (left) and follow the road around the curve to the entrance of…

Walk south on Gladstone to St. Stephen’s Avenue. Turn west (right) and walk to…

Holy Trinity Cathedral Auckland

The Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral was built in the 1960s, but the site has a much deeper history dating to 1841. The 19th-century St. Mary’s Cathedral and the modern glass-walled Bishop Selwyn Chapel are located on the property as well.

From the cathedral, walk south on Parnell Road to Maunsell Road. Turn west/northwest and walk to…

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Lest We Forget, Auckland War Memorial Museum Water Feature, New Zealand

Located on the Auckland Domain, the largest open green space in the city, the neoclassical Auckland War Memorial Museum building sits atop Observatory Hill. Also simply called the Auckland Museum, the collections detail the history of the country, the area’s natural history along with New Zealand’s military history.

Exterior of Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand

In addition to special exhibits, the museum has a large collection of Maori (native) artifacts – and has Maori performances, as well. Part of the museum and grounds are dedicated war memorials, honoring New Zealand soldiers who have died in wars.

Walk north through the Auckland Domain to Grafton Road and continue walking north onto the campus of…

University of Auckland

The country’s largest university, University of Auckland, dates to 1883. Comprising multiple campuses (although the Auckland campus is the largest), the university has over 40,000 enrolled students.

After wandering through campus, walk west on Alfred Street to…

Albert Park, Auckland

The hilly Albert Park features both forested grounds and formal gardens. Once military fortifications, the park was developed in the late 1800s. Dotted with statues, fountains, memorials and artwork, Albert Park is the perfect place to end a city tour of Auckland.

From the park, walk west on Victoria Street to Queen Street. Turn north (right) and walk to the Auckland Ferry Terminal where we began!

Half-Day Trip To Devonport, New Zealand

Take a Day Trip To Devonport, New Zealand

One of the best Auckland half-day tours is a trip to Devonport. Located across the Waitemata Harbor on the end of a peninsula, Devonport is a suburb of Auckland. Although it has a long history with the Royal New Zealand Navy, the town also exudes a charming, laidback atmosphere.

Devonport Ferry from Auckland

Leaving on the Ferry To Devonport from Auckland, NZ

We think taking the ferry ride to Devonport is one of the best things to do outside Auckland! Hop aboard the Auckland to Devonport Ferry for a short sail across the bay. On the ferry to Devonport, find a seat on the back of the boat to watch get excellent Auckland skyline views.

Top Tip : There are private tour boats and public ferries that make the Devonport-Auckland trip. Find information at the terminal – or check out the Devonport Ferry Timetable on the official public transport website  (where you can also check the Devonport Ferry price).

Things To Do in Devonport

Waterfront Park in Devonport, New Zealand

Planning what to do in Devonport will be based on your interests and time. There are many Devonport things to do – from getting a taste of locally made Devonport Chocolates to visiting military sights to eating at a chic café. Below, we outline that top Devonport attractions that we enjoyed on our day trip from Auckland.

North Head Devonport

View from North Head Devonport, New Zealand

After we docked at the Devonport Wharf, we strolled along the waterfront on King Edward Parade, passing the Devonport Beach along the way. We continued our route toward North Head, an old military base. Formerly know as Fort Cautley, the New Zealand army and navy occupied the hill from the 1870’s until 1996 to protect Auckland from an attack from the water.

Disappearing Gun Cannon, North Head Devonport, New Zealand

Now a park, North Head features the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum, remaining military barracks and replica artillery. Beneath the surface are the subterranean Devonport tunnels that can be freely explored. The biggest North Head attraction is the ‘Disappearing Gun’, housed in the side of the hill and built to recoil below ground level after being fired.

Devonport Restaurants, Bars and Cafes

Craft Beer at Tiny Triumphs, Devonport, NZ

The main streets in Devonport are lined with shops, restaurants, cafes and a handful of bars. During our trip, we wandered into a local craft beer bar,  Tiny Triumphs , which has nice outdoor space and was staffed with friendly bartenders. If you are looking for the best Devonport cafes and restaurants, read fellow traveler reviews on TripAdvisor .

More Devonport, Auckland Things To Do

Although a small town, visiting Devonport on a half-day trip from Auckland doesn’t allow for too much exploring. However, there are other things to do in Devonport, NZ than we did on our day trip.

In addition to the chocolate shop, other popular Devonport shops are book stores and art galleries. The Victoria Theater Devonport – or just The Vic – is a historic cinema that was built in 1912 and ranks as New Zealand’s oldest operating movie theater.

Devonport to Auckland Ferry

View of the Skyline of Auckland From The Water, New Zealand

Keep an eye on the time and catch a return ferry to Auckland at sunset for stunning views of Auckland CBD and harbor. Regardless of how much time you have in Devonport, a ferry ride is the perfect way to end one day in Auckland!

Before you travel to New Zealand, we have a few tips and packing hacks for your trip to Auckland!

Where To Stay in Auckland, NZ

During our visit to Auckland, we stayed at Titirangi Beach in an awesome Airbnb Apartment . We have found that staying in apartments is often less expensive than hotel rooms – with the added benefit of a kitchen and, usually, more space.

However, for those who prefer staying in traditional accommodations, there are many Auckland Hotels to choose from in – or close to – the city center. Start your search for the best priced hotel rooms on Booking.com – but read all our Top Hotel Tips first!

Getting To Auckland, NZ

Our preferred method of getting anywhere is by flying (we are JetSettingFools, after all!). We arrived at the Auckland International Airport (AKL) from French Polynesia (and Easter Island !) and departed to Sydney (via Wellington, NZ). Step back in time with new self-guided walking tours

Take a step back in time with Auckland’s two new self-guided walking tours which encourage people to learn more about Tāmaki Makaurau’s history.

Pride Walks: The Gay Liberation Trail and Tāmaki Makaurau’s Original Inner-City Shoreline are now available on smart devices via the AKL City Tours app.

Supported by Auckland Council, the app has seven self-guided walking tours and can be downloaded from Google Play and The App Store .

Pride Walks: The Gay Liberation Trail traces steps the origins of the Gay Liberation movement which took place in Auckland in 1972.

Made up of mainly young people; the activist group is credited with bringing LGBTIQ+ community out of the closet and proudly onto the city’s street for the first time.

Taking Tāmaki Makaurau’s Original Inner-City Shoreline tour allows people to retrace the city’s original shoreline which has changed dramatically by reclamation in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The marinas and commercial wharves, which now stretch from Westhaven through to Judge’s Bay, are very different from the foreshore lived on and worked by Mana Whenua and sighted by the first European settlers to Auckland.

Auckland Council’s City Centre Place Activation Team Leader Barbara Holloway says AKL City Tours gives residents and visitors a glimpse into Auckland’s rich history and heritage.

“With an excellent variety of tours available everyone can take a step back in time to discover the history and cultural heritage which have helped shape the city and the best thing is the learning can be done at any pace.”

Self-guided walking tours available include:

  • Pride Walks: The Gay Liberation Trail
  • Tāmaki Makaurau’s Original Inner-City Shoreline
  • Aotea Quarter Public Art Guide
  • Karangahape Road Heritage Walk
  • Pubs, Cathedrals, Toilets and the City (CRL)
  • Te Ao Tangata Hikoi Universal Design Tour
  • Te Paparahi, Toi Māori Walks in the City

The AKL City Tours app is funded by the Auckland City Centre Targeted Rate and Auckland Council.

Queen Street Auckland: Self-Guided Walk Uncovers Quirky Facts

The Maori gate at the entrance to Aotea Square on Queen Street in Auckland New Zealand

Every major city has a street that does it all; in Auckland, Queen Street is it. This main thoroughfare was once a dirty canal leading out to sea. Today, Queen Street Auckland is the heart of the central business district (CBD), a shopper’s paradise, and a tourist destination.

And, unbeknownst to many, the canal still runs deep underneath the street.

If you know where to look, you will discover more secrets and other evidence of Queen Street’s rich history as you walk the three kilometres up to Karangahape Road (K Road). Many of my favourite quirky Auckland fun facts are on Queen Street.

First, some Auckland highlights

Self-guided walking tour up Queen Street Auckland

Presented below as we walked from the water to Aotea Square.

Britomart Transportation hub

Queen St Auckland begins at Britomart, which is across the street from the Ferry Building (located on Quay Street at the water’s edge). Britomart is the city’s central transportation hub for both rail and bus.

Don’t let the current construction phase you; pedestrians can easily pass. Underneath the construction covers, this iconic building was once the city’s post office.

Britomart, the main transportation hub for Auckland New Zealand

An unfinished canal gate

The Dilworth building stands proudly at the next corner, an unfinished concept. If you look at its curved corner, imagine a mirrored image on the other side of Queen Street. The original design included matching buildings forming a gate at the base of the canal.

Queen Street: an Auckland shopping and restaurant district

Beginning just after Customs Street, the Queen Street shops cover the full range of value and quality. Ranging from high-end designers like Gucci to souvenir shops, there is something for everyone.

Queen Street restaurants offer a similar range of options, from a $40 steak to Burger King, and many are amongst our favourite Auckland restaurants .

Foodies may want to check out this well-rated Queen Street food tour. This three-hour walking tour features multicultural cuisine, local artisan produce, and information about the city’s architecture. Reserve your Queens Street food tour here .

Stores, and buildings on Queen Street Auckland, New Zealand

Remnants of the former Royal and Queen’s theatres

Another block and just passed the Queen’s Arcade is the entrance to Everybody’s Bar (44 Queen Street), originally built between 1886 and 1911. Once home to two theatres, it now houses an eatery and is a pass-through to Fort Lane, which explains its official address of 7 Fort Lane. The sloping cobblestone floor leads towards the former movie screen.

Fort Street: the former coastline (intersecting with Queen Street)

When you reach Fort Street, imagine life a few hundred years ago.  You are no longer on landfill and are now standing at what would have been a cliff top at the intersection of the dirty canal (now Queen Street) with the ocean. Looking along Fort Street, you would have seen a row of heads impaled on posts along this foreshore. (The original Maori name Te One Panea translates to “beach of the heads in line”).

Depressions on Fort Street identify the former coastline in Auckland New Zealand.

A haunted hotel

Another 100 metres up Queen Street and you are at Vulcan Lane. It earned notoriety from the drunken sailors who spent their on-shore time here. The Queen’s Ferry Hotel, completed in 1860, now the Urchin and Amber restaurant on the ground level and The Gin Room on the first floor is reputed to be haunted.

Stop in for a drink, and ask questions. Some of the longer-term employees have interesting stories to share.  The “friendly” ghost only appears occasionally on the third floor, which is not open to visitors.

The haunted former Queens Ferry Hotel in Auckland New Zealand

A leaning building

Auckland’s leaning building is also on Vulcan Lane. Not famous like the Leaning Tower in Pisa , or as unnerving as the over 600 leaning buildings on the coastline of Santos Brazil , Auckland’s Occidental Hotel has a leaning first floor. In a failed attempt to balance the building, engineers added a second and third floor.

Auckland's leaning building

An atmospheric theatre on Queen Street (one of the few left in the world)

At Wellesley Street stands Queen Street Auckland’s most intricate and iconic building, the Civic Theatre. It is one of a few dozen remaining “ atmospheric theatres ” in the world.

Civic Theatre in Auckalnd New Zealand is one of world's last remaining atmospheric theatre. #travel #newzealand #auckland #queenstreet #theatre

The world’s creepiest Christmas ornament was on Queen Street Auckland

From the 1960s to 2019, a giant Santa stood proudly every December over the entrance of what is now Farmers. Today, Santa can be found in the National Transport and Toy Museum in Wanaka .

Interestingly, in 2011 Cracked.com named the giant Santa on Queen and Victoria Streets as the world’s creepiest Christmas ornament . Oddly, two years earlier (2009), a ‘Santa makeover’ resulted in the static eye and finger we see today. (These were the features generally thought of by locals as his creepiest).

Giant Santa on Queen Street in Auckland New Zealand is named the world's creepiest Christmas ornament

Waharoa in Aotea Square

Walk one more block to Aotea Square, and you have reached the Waharoa, meaning “gateway” in Māori. This is the separating point between Lower and Upper Queen Street. Māori sculptor Selwyn Muru carved the wood and copper Waharoa with a chainsaw and chisel.

The five symbols across the top are Whetu me te Marama (representing heavenly spheres), Tawhiri Matea (God of the Elements), Tane Mahuta (God of the Forest), Tangaroa (God of the Sea), and Tama nui te Ra (God of the Sun). It also contains elements like the nuclear disarmament symbol, reflecting the modern influences on New Zealand art.

The Waharoa, a Maori gate, at the entrance to Aotea Square on Queen Street in Auckland New Zealand

Lord Auckland, the city’s founder

At the back of Aotea Square, a statue of Lord Auckland (George Eden, the first Earl of Auckland) stands proudly, overlooking the city that is his namesake. Mount Eden is also named after him.

Statue of Lord Auckland - George Eden - the first Earl of Auckland

I had no idea there was a Lord Auckland .  The plaque reads:

In 1840 Governor Hobson named this city after Lord Auckland, from whom he had received command of H.M.S. Rattlesnake when Lord Auckland was first Lord of the Admiralty in 1834. Lord Auckland served as Governor-General of India from 1835 to 1842, and this statue of him stood in Calcutta from 1848 to 1969 when it was presented by the government of West Bangal to the city of Auckland. The transportation of the statute to Auckland and its erection on this site was arranged and financed by the New Zealand Insurance Co. LTD. as a gift to its home city.”

Interestingly, there was also a ship also called the Lord Auckland that was used to bring immigrants to New Zealand and then later to bring convicts to Australia .

Town Hall on Queen Street

The Town Hall is just ahead (the building with the clock tower).

Auckland Town Hall in Aotea Square, Auckland New Zealand

From here, the neighbourhood becomes less touristy as it leads up to the alternative and funky Karangahape Road , more commonly referred to as K Road.

Hello Rhonda , splendid effort . Just in case you are not aware there is a plaque set in the pavement on the corner of Queen St and Customs St at the base of the Dilworth Hotel which explains that in 1942 the hotel was used by US forces to plan the invasion of Guadalcanal . At the time this event was critical to the survival of New Zealand which I’m sure you would agree deserves to be recognised . US armed forces took over fifteen other buildings in the vicinity for the duration of their stay in NZ .

I had no idea there is a lord Auckland either! We did have a quick visit to Auckland when we were in NZ, but I missed almost all of this! I guess we”’ just have to go back 😀 I was fascinated that the city is built over so many volcanoes.

December 15, 2019 at 1:35 am

What a fun place to walk about!

July 11, 2019 at 4:09 pm

Like most of the readers here I think the Auckland bridge is great!

August 11, 2018 at 10:07 pm

Auckland is not extending it’s light rail system. There is no light rail (yet). The construction is for a new rail link that will extend the existing rail system to a number of new stations on an underground circuit.

March 29, 2018 at 2:12 am

While I’m sure I visited as a kid, Auckland isn’t somewhere I’m familiar with at all. I like the look of the city, especially the architecture of that town hall. The impression of the former coastline in the middle of the footpath is so strange to me! NZ is clearly more than just its natural side.

The history behind the various landmarks of Queen Street makes for fascinating reading. I was really enchanted by the Post Office building. Post offices and Railway stations are of keen interest for me because in most cities these have a long and interesting history. The Post Office building looks so majestic. The Civic Theatre is another building that drew my attention. The interiors are mesmerizing and the building must have been a silent witness to many a spectacular show.

March 28, 2018 at 10:23 am

It’s funny, I’ve been to Auckland so many times (I have family who live there), yet I haven’t noticed half of these buildings! What a fascinating story about the Dilworth Building being half of a gate – sad the other side doesn’t exist. I can’t believe that from Fort street there used to be the canal reaching the sea. I’d love to see photos of Queen street as it was… oh how times have changed! I’m such a bad Kiwi, I didn’t know there was a Lord Auckland either!

March 27, 2018 at 7:40 pm

Wow! Never could imagine that there could be so many hidden gems on one street. Like you I too never knew there was a Mr Auckland lurking somewhere in NZ history! The whole place gives me an appearance as if it is in Europe. When we went on a road trip from Auckland to Wellington we hardly stayed in Auckland one day.

March 27, 2018 at 11:52 am

Your posts always fascinate me, Rhonda. It gives me the itch to travel your way… perhaps someday!

I love the contrasting architecture and the Maori gate. I am sure that all the items on it have a special meaning. I wonder how many people walking down the street on a daily basis know that there is a leaning building?

Rhonda Albom

March 31, 2018 at 11:26 am

I know I walked by it for years before I knew. Now it seems so obvious, I wonder how I missed it.

March 27, 2018 at 3:12 am

I don’t think I could stay in that hotel with the leaning first floor, Rhonda! I’d be afraid it would fall down in the middle of the night. Great finding out more about Auckland.

Queen Street is one of the most happening areas in Auckland and we were there 2 years ago. However, I did not know there are so many cool places there! For example, the area which was a former coastline or the one that was earlier a screen in a movie theatre. Also, I had no idea there’s a haunted hotel there. Thanks for this informative post on things to see on Queen Street, I only wish I had come across it earlier!

I’ve grown so accustomed to reading blog posts about New Zealand’s nature that I was beginning to think it was one big camping ground or wilderness park. I love your walking tour of Queen Street! So many interesting bits to explore, like the gorgeous clock tower. I never actually understood colonialism and what it really meant until I moved to Southeast Asia. Every time I see clock towers now I’m kind of surprised that they are still standing. Usually they are old/historic keepsakes, but because of what they represent; the arrival of the ‘white man’ and ‘white man’ ways. Never paid much attention to them in the US.

I love how Queen Street is so full of interesting and unique history, but it’s stuff that most people would walk right by without knowing – makes it feel like you’ve discovered a cool secret when you put the time into researching and learning about it! During our day in Auckland I got back to the ship and couldn’t get over how cool it was that the old coastline was dotted out on the pavement / sidewalk – I was telling Mike all about it!

You said that the canal is still underneath the street. Could the canal come threw in the future and have everything fall into the canal? Just the thought scares me. The Waharoa, this Māori gate to me was the most interesting thing in the city. I Loved it. New Zealand I find such an interesting country. Just reading about everything you say, give me a thought that maybe I should visit there. See ya Rhonda.

Well, this is something I never thought of before. I am not an engineer, but I would say no. Apparently there are many tunnels and lots of waterways running under Auckland.

March 26, 2018 at 9:35 am

Such a great way to explore a city’s history by taking it one street at a time, so many interesting places! You can tell you’ve lived in Auckland for a long time and know the city well!

It’s a great list! I have been to the Queen’s street but didn’t realize there are so much to see until you gave me this tour! The Former Coastline, Queens Ferry Hotel and Dilworth building stories are really interesting, and the Santa decoration to me… it’s not that creepy after all 😛 @ knycx.journeying

March 26, 2018 at 5:23 am

I would love to visit New Zealand one day and Auckland will certainly be on my list.

I enjoyed the interesting pieces of history that you added, particularly the points around Vulcan Lane, it looks a lovely place to visit.

How fascinating that this major street of Auckland was once a canal, and that the canal still runs beneath the street that was built over it! I really enjoyed “walking” the street with you, and especially the little things I would not have noticed such as the indentations marking the original cliff top and coastline.

March 25, 2018 at 8:57 pm

Wow so much in and around Queen’s Street. I like how the old look of the buildings is still being maintained. Both the haunted hotel and the leaning building has caught my fascination. Hope to see in real some day.

March 26, 2018 at 10:01 am

I am fascinated by the haunted hotel.

March 25, 2018 at 4:25 pm

Never been to Auckland. Your summary of Queen Street is delightful – perfect details for the first time visitor (or even the second or third!). It’s nice that Queen Street offers historic sites for the history buffs, Maori traces for those interested in cultural sites, shopping, dining, theatres, old and modern architecture, and even a hidden purpose — the cover over the canal. I personally love a good street walking tour when visiting a city for the first time. That’s basically what you’ve put together here!

March 26, 2018 at 10:00 am

I am guessing that even locals don’t know most of this. I learned some on an Artweek tour , and the rest from talking and interviewing people, and other research.

March 25, 2018 at 1:49 pm

What a fun and interesting walk around Queen Street! And, what a combination of sight: Santa Claus, Lord Auckland, and a haunted hotel. In one way or another, they work together to create a great place. I like the idea of learning more about the places that are close to us and that we think we know. I do not go often to the Downtown Los Angeles area (the traffic is so bad) but when I go I am marveled at the stories and history.

March 26, 2018 at 9:59 am

I have been to LA, I fully understand. Although Auckland traffic is getting pretty bad too, but not like yours.

March 25, 2018 at 12:52 pm

I had no idea the architecture was so beautiful there. Pity they didn’t complete the curved decoration on that one building. Always love hearing about ghosts and especially friendly ones. Love seeing the combination of old and new in the town and those depressions marking the original shoreline. Very cool walking tour.

March 26, 2018 at 9:58 am

The building is complete, they were going to make a matching-mirror image building across the street to make a gate welcoming visitors to the city.

March 25, 2018 at 11:58 am

oh how I miss Queen street, my first job was working in downtown square, I have happy memories.

March 26, 2018 at 9:56 am

Perhaps it’s time for a road trip to Auckland.

March 25, 2018 at 9:56 am

I had an idea that Auckland would be quite modern – in fact it looks Victorian in style to me. And so many fascinating places to see. Great post

There are plenty of modern buildings, but it is the older ones that have the most interesting history.

California Globetrotter

March 25, 2018 at 9:05 am

It’s truly amazing how the city has evolved over time! I’m sure it looks nothing like it did decades ago!

March 26, 2018 at 9:55 am

It’s only a 150 year old city, so it is always growing and changing, but so many of the buildings are still original.

March 24, 2018 at 5:41 pm

I love the lighting on the Town Hall clocktower. What a landmark! I would also like to have a look down K Street. Maybe we can go there next time.

March 24, 2018 at 4:17 pm

It was fun to see these snapshots of Auckland, it really brings to light the feel of the local life and architecture. I enjoyed learning about everything from the haunted hotel to the leaning tower! 🙂

So cool to read this post and versus feeling like it is so far away I say to myself….”Hey! I was just there yesterday!!!” Loved Auckland. We cruised thru a trendy little district but I cannot recall the street. Lovely area though. 1 quick night and now we are settling into gorgeous Opotiki. So much fun. I love the people and the unrivaled beauty of the place. NZ is the prettiest country I have ever seen.

If you were in one of the newer, trendy districts, you haven’t made it to Queen Street yet. Next time.

I’ve not been, but I really think I need to get myself there. It looks like a really gorgeous and regal city.

March 25, 2018 at 8:18 am

I love Auckland, it’s so filled with nature and quirky places.

March 24, 2018 at 2:18 pm

Aukland looks like a very fun city to visit. Hopefully, I’ll make it there someday and when I do, I’ll try to remember to look for some of these quirky thinks on Queen Street. That Māori sculptor surely had a lot of imagination, but to be honest with you I don’t really like his creation.

March 25, 2018 at 8:17 am

When you get here, I will take you up Queen Street and show it all to you.

March 24, 2018 at 11:54 am

How interesting that the canal still runs underneath it and the markings for the former clifftop and coastline. But the giant Santa has to be my favorite!

You should have seen the giant Santa before his makeover, he deserved his title back then.

March 24, 2018 at 11:38 am

Aucklands a pretty neat town! I’ve been there once to explore, however, I had no idea that half these places even existed!

March 25, 2018 at 8:16 am

LOL – neither did I until I did a city tour a few years ago. After that, I did some research. It’s amazing what you find when you turn over that proverbial stone.

April 21, 2015 at 10:40 am

It seems that almost every town or city has a Queen Street, whether great or small.

Courtney Turner (@mauijungalow)

April 21, 2015 at 9:06 am

That’s a gigantic Santa! Maui, where I live, has a main town of Kahului, but I’m not sure what our main street would be? Pu’unene or Hana Highway? Or Dairy Road? There’s not one road that shows up as the “main road.” None of the roads have any major sculpture or art!

Hi Rhonda – Queen Street looks a thriving hub … and I love the look of the atmospheric theatre – that Id’ not heard of before .. I see we don’t have one in the UK … but I was thinking about the artwork – when you commented on how much there is in Auckland .. love the Maori gate ..

Lovely to see Queen Street .. cheers Hilary

April 20, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Hmm. I’m sure San Diego has a “main street” like this, but I’m not sure what it is yet. I don’t spend much time downtown!

In Montreal, however, it’s quite obvious that the 2 main streets are Saint Catherine (running east/west) and St-Laurent (running north/south). They’re the main streets of the city, where you can find all of the shopping, dining and life. Sherbrooke is probably more trafficked by buses and cars, but Saint Catherine is where everything you want to see is at.

Alex J. Cavanaugh

Auckland to Rotorua: The drive south from Auckland takes you past the Bombay Hills and into the rolling farmland and rich dairy pastures of the Waikato. The Bombay Hills mark the outer boundary of greater Auckland area and it’s here you turn inland to central Waikato. You’ll soon go through the town of Matamata where you can visit the fully intact Hobbiton film set used in the shooting of the Lord of The Rings and Hobbit trilogies. Continuing on, you’ll pass several small farming communities before telltale signs of steam and other geothermal activity signal your arrival into Rotorua.

Marvel at the beautiful bush setting and see warriors in traditional dress who paddle an ancient warrior canoe (waka) down the Wai-o-whiro stream while trout and eels swim beneath the surface. Enjoy a traditionally cooked hangi meal and round your evening off with a spectacular cultural performance that tells the story of the Maori people, their past, carvings, and ta Moko -Tattoo art. Be captivated by the displays of weaponry and combat and be amazed by the spine tingling Haka finale. Truly an experience to remember.

Just north are the Huka Falls and a short detour to view is highly recommended. Things to do in Auckland over the long weekend

Spending your three-day weekend in Auckland? Here are some of the most exciting things happening across the city.

Looking for a way to light up your long weekend? From Matariki celebrations to an assortment of other events, here’s our selection of some of Tāmaki Makaurau’s best events to keep you, your whānau and friends entertained. There’s quirky comedy, whānau-friendly adventures, theatre made by young people and some made for young people, plus a couple of neat things to plan for later in the week and month.

1) Lights for Matariki - Various locations

For a bit of a DIY Matariki celebration, might we suggest a self-guided light tour of Tāmaki Makaurau? The central city is aglow with various light displays including Tūrama on Queen St, Lightpath Te Ara i Whiti, PWC (Quay St), the Sky Tower, Viaduct Harbour and the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Then venturing a little further afield, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Eden Park and Westfield Newmarket are all illuminated for Matariki. The piece de resistance is of course Auckland Harbour Bridge, which from 6pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday night this week will be displaying a five-minute Vector Lights show that you can view from locations around Auckland, including Maungawhau Mt Eden, Bayswater Marina, Silo Park, Takurunga Mt Victoria or anywhere you can get a good view of the bridge. Rug up and go light spotting with your friends, whānau or Tinder dates. Mānawatia a Matariki.

When: June 29 and 30 (Vector Lights June 29 only).

Where: Various locations in Tāmaki Makaurau. Visit vector.co.nz/lights to listen to a live soundtrack.

Price: Free.

2) Five Go on an Adventure - Takapuna

Opening this Saturday with their always-festive gala performance is Tim Bray Theatre Company’s production of Five Go on an Adventure . Based on the classic Enid Blyton book series, The Famous Five , Bray has created a wonderfully whimsical story about four children and their dog, Timmy, who head off seeking an adventure and along the way uncover a mystery they simply must solve. Bray is a master at adapting classic stories for young audiences, keeping them engaged and giggling throughout. Like all their productions, the show is a very manageable 50-60 minutes long - perfect for wriggly bottoms and itchy feet - and they offer sensory-relaxed, audio-described and NZSL-interpreted performances so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the theatre. After Saturday’s opening gala, there will be school/ECE shows during the week, before two weeks of twice daily performances in the school holidays. If you want to be extra cute, pack yourselves a themed picnic with honey sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer to enjoy lakeside at Lake Pupuke before or after the show.

When: June 29-July 20.

Where: The Pumphouse Theatre, 2a Manurere Ave, Takapuna, Auckland.

Price: Tickets start at $28 + booking fees from timbray.org.nz

3) Ice skating at Aotea Square - Auckland CBD

Embrace winter’s hat and scarf-based fashion and head into town for ice skating merriment at Aotea Square. Now one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most popular winter traditions, the ice rink opens Matariki weekend and runs through until mid-August. This year there’s more on offer than just skating laps with your crush – possibly the Olympics’ most intriguing sport, curling, is coming, with a two-lane curling rink where teams of four can go head to head. Challenge your neighbours, colleagues, cousins or pals to a 25-minute curling battle and things are bound to get a bit silly. If traditional ice skating is more your speed, then you’ll enjoy the Student Nights, Skate and Date Nights and DJ on Ice Fridays. The Aotea Square Ice Rink is Auckland’s answer to Rockefeller Centre but just a short train or bus ride into to town away.

When: June 28 - August 11, 10am-10pm Sunday to Thursday, until 11pm Fridays and Saturdays.

Where: Aotea Square, Auckland Central.

Price: Skating $26 adults; $21 children; $13 pre-schoolers; $69 family pass. Curling $21 per person (minimum two people); $15 Monday-Thursday evenings. Book at aucklandlive.co.nz

4) An Intimate Evening with Tabitha Booth - Auckland CBD

A wildly unique one-woman show opens Saturday night at Q Theatre called An Intimate Evening with Tabitha Booth . Created and performed by Melbourne-based comedian Frankie McNair, the slightly delusional, thoroughly outlandish character of Tabitha is a contemporary of Minelli, Streisand and Monroe. She’s a “heavily medicated lounge singer” who’s returning to the stage to share a lifetime of stories from old Hollywood. A Theatre Travels review says “If you miss it, I feel sorry for you” and while you may never have heard of that publication, we can all agree that’s probably the most emphatic thumbs-up a show could ever be honoured with. There are seven shows across the week in the upstairs Loft at Q Theatre, the perfect little space for an intimate evening of unhinged reminiscing.

When: June 29 - July 6.

Where: Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St, Auckland Central.

Price: Tickets $20-$32 + booking fee from qtheatre.co.nz

5) Matariki at MOTAT - Western Springs

Looking for a way to entertain the tamariki and engage in Matariki celebrations this long weekend? Head down to MOTAT, where you can create and design your own whetū (star) using weaving, knot and lashing techniques while learning all about celestial navigation and kūmara harvesting in the newly opened Te Puawānanga science and technology centre. Grab a Matariki star trail map on arrival and take a tour around the museum to see what treasures you find along the way. In the Discovery Dome, learn all about solar tsunamis courtesy of a Tūhura Otago Museum exhibit which lets you get hands-on with magnets, a plasma ball and more. Oodles of learning wrapped in fun to be had at MOTAT this weekend.

When: June 29-30.

Where: MOTAT, 805 Great North Rd, Western Springs, Auckland.

Price: Usual MOTAT entry fees apply.

6) Afloat: 20 Years After The Rise - Glen Eden

If you want to know what’s on the minds of young people today then Afloat: 20 Years After The Rise is a great place to start. This original musical is written by two teenagers - Samantha Hook, 18, and Harrison Maxwell, 17. It’s set in a future in which a nuclear plant malfunction has resulted in the rapid rising of sea levels and loss of all land on Earth. Survivors have created homes and empires on floating debris. In this post-apocalyptic world chaos ensues as a rebellion rises and friends become traitors - singing all the while. The musical features 17 young performers and 20 original songs, so if you’re worried teenagers these days just sit on their phones all day, this show proves just how much productivity and creativity the next generation is capable of. It opened Friday and has two performances on Saturday so get along and support the future Andrew Lloyd Webbers and Tim Minchins of Tāmaki Makaurau.

When: June 29, 2pm and 7pm.

Where: Glen Eden Playhouse Theatre, 15 Glendale Rd, Glen Eden, Auckland.

Price: Tickets $30 from afloatmusical.com

Plan Ahead: Mid-winter Christmas in Queenstown

If an ugly sweater party and some roast turkey isn’t quite living up to your mid-winter Christmas fantasies then maybe hopping a plane to Queenstown might do it? Ayrburn, the dreamy new food and wine hub in Arrowtown, is going all out for mid-winter Christmas, transforming into a winter wonderland for what they intend to be an annual celebration. There’s an ice skating rink, light displays and Christmas decorations aplenty. Throughout July, there’ll be a range of Christmas-themed activities and experiences to enjoy. So you can experience the hygge joys of a white Christmas without travelling halfway around the world.

When: Throughout July.

Where: Ayrburn, Arrowtown.

Price: Visit ayrburn.com for more information.

Plan Ahead: The Tīwhas! A Matariki Spectacular - Auckland CBD

The Tīwhas! A Matariki Spectacular is the Matariki celebration/education you never knew you needed. Wellington takatāpui drag group, The Tīwhas, are performing a theatrical reimagining of Matariki at the Basement Theatre next week and it’s a must-see. These queens are much more than meticulously make-upped lip synchers, they have their own brand of performance that includes kapa haka, drag artistry and live vocals. Featuring Dame Jthan, Slay West, Pania and new recruit Huh? Mama!, ring in te tau hou Māori/the Māori new year with some fabulously flamboyant bilingual singing, storytelling and celebration.

When: July 2-6.

Where: Basement Theatre, Lower Greys Ave, Auckland Central.

Price: Tickets $18 - $28 + booking fees from basementtheatre.co.nz

Plan Ahead: Doc Edge Film Festival - Auckland CBD

Proving year after year that truth is stranger than fiction, often more affecting and thought-provoking too, the Doc Edge Film Festival launches in Auckland and Wellington on Wednesday. The Academy Awards-qualifying festival this year has an unprecedented 12 world premieres, including Sharko , a revealing film about the destructive life of rugby league player Mark Graham, made by his son; The Other Side , journalist Sean Langan’s window into the Russian side of the war on Ukraine; and Pistachio Wars , uncovering a dirty secret of the healthy snack industry in California. Films are screening at The Capitol Cinema and Auckland Central Library over 12 days so get yourself tickets to see at least one of these eye-opening films or better yet, get a five or 10 film pass and knock yourself out with true stories from all over the world.

When: July 3-14.

Where: The Capitol Cinema, Balmoral and Auckland Central Library, Auckland Central.

Price: Tickets start at $17.50 from docedge.nz

Get a pair of skates on and have a go at ice skating down at Aotea Square's pop-up ice rink.
