Ramoji is located at a distance of approximately 30 km from the city, and it covers a jaw-dropping 2500 hectares. Paigah Tombs

Another striking building in the city of Hyderabad is the Paigah tombs. This place will be a treat to your solo trip if you are interested in architecture and offers a blend of Rajputana and Asaf Jah’s style of architecture. If you want to see some Indo-Saracenic architecture, this is the right place. These tombs are the resting place of some of the most prominent members of the Paigah family, and the entire building is made of marble, displaying stunning jaali work. The Paigah family was a wealthy noble family that lived in the city, and many of the family members were married to the women of the Nizam families.

Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla is an Urdu word that literally translates to ‘four palaces’. The Chowmahalla Palace was built in the 18th century when the city was under the rule of the fifth Nizam, Afzar-ud-Daulah. The palace covered an area of 45 acres when it was built. However, given the development and encroachment, this area has now been reduced to just 12 acres. Divided into two courtyards, the southern and northern courtyard, there are a number of sections of the palace. Some of the sections here include Aftab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal, Afzal Mahal, Khilwat Mubarak, and Roshan Bungalow.

Qutub Shahi Tombs

One Of the oldest heritage sites in Hyderabad, the Qutub Shahi tombs are the resting place of seven rulers from the Qutub Shahi era. This place is located at a short distance from the Golconda Fort. Built by the Qutub Shahis, this place displays a beautiful blend of Indian and Persian architecture. These tombs were also renovated in the late 19th century and are in pretty good condition. The stunning ‘Ibrahim Bagh’ surrounds these tombs and serves as a popular picnic spot for tourists and locals alike. The Qutub Shahi tombs also serve as the venue for the Deccan festival, which is organized by the State Government.

Laad Bazaar

Before visiting Hyderabad, it is helpful to be aware of certain aspects that can enhance your experience in this vibrant city.

Telugu, Urdu, and English are the primary languages spoken in Hyderabad.
The city is popular for its cuisine, especially flavorful biryanis, kebabs, Haleem, and the local Irani chai.
Laad Bazaar and Sultan Bazaar are great for shopping traditional bangles, pearls, and handicrafts.
The traffic in Hyderabad can be intense, especially during peak hours. Plan your travels accordingly.
Hyderabad has a tropical climate, with hot summers and relatively mild winters.
While Hyderabad is generally considered safe for tourists, taking standard safety precautions is essential.

Places to See in Hyderabad in One Day

Commence your day by immersing yourself in the iconic symbol of Hyderabad’s heritage – Charminar. Meaning “Four Towers” in Urdu, Charminar was built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Located in the heart of the city, Charminar is a splendid example of Indo-Islamic architecture, blending Persian, Turkish, and Indian styles. It is a square-shaped structure with four grand arches, each facing a cardinal direction.

Charminar houses a small mosque on its second floor, which is still active for prayers. The call to prayer from Charminar resonates in the surrounding areas, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the place. At night, the monument takes on a magical charm when it is beautifully illuminated.

Recommended Time : 2 hours. Entrance Fee : Rupees 5 per adult for Indians and Rupees 100 per adult for Foreigners. Timings : 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Chowmohallah Palace

After exploring Charminar, proceed to the regal Chowmohallah Palace. Built over several years, starting in 1750, Chowmohallah Palace is an example of the grandeur of the Nizams, the rulers of the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad. Translating to “Four Palaces” in Urdu, the monument is a blend of architectural styles, including Persian, Rajasthani, Indo-Saracenic, and European influences.

The Grand Durbar Hall, or Khilwat Mubarak, one of the highlights of Chowmohallah Palace, served as the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, where the Nizams held their durbar (royal court) ceremonies. It also has a clock tower called the Khilwat Clock, which is over 250 years old and continues to tick with precision.

Recommended Time : 2 hours. Entrance Fee : Rupees 100 per adult for Indians and Rupees 400 per adult for Foreigners. Timings : 10 AM to 5 PM. Closed on Fridays.

Lunch at Paradise Restaurant

Head to the city’s renowned dining establishment, Paradise Restaurant, for a delightful lunch. Known far and wide for its Hyderabadi biryani, Paradise Restaurant is a culinary landmark in Hyderabad. Established in 1953 by Asaduddin Owaisi, the restaurant has a tale of passion, tradition, and a commitment to culinary excellence.

Sydney was home to a branch of Paradise Restaurant, a cherished Indian dining spot for my friends and me. Our favorite haunt, we frequented the place at least once a week to indulge in its delightful Hyderabadi biryani.

Recommended Time : 1 to 1.5 hours.

Hussain Sagar Lake

Following a delectable and fulfilling lunch, proceed to Hussain Sagar Lake. Built by Hazrat Hussain Shah Wali in 1562 during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, Hussain Sagar Lake is renowned for its unique necklace-shaped bund.

Hussain Sagar is a massive reservoir connecting the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and is constructed on the River Musi. Witnessing the sunset over Hussain Sagar Lake is a breathtaking experience as the sky casts reflections on the tranquil waters, creating a serene and picturesque ambiance.

Recommended Time : 2 hours. Entrance Fee : Rupees 15 per adult for Indians and Rupees 200 per adult for Foreigners. Timings : 8 AM to 5:30 PM.

Golconda Fort

The final destination preceding dinner is Golconda Fort. Originally constructed in the 13th century and expanded by the Qutb Shahi kings, Golconda Fort is perched atop a granite hill in the western part of Hyderabad. Serving as a robust defense system for the medieval city of Golconda, the fort showcases a seamless blend of military prowess and aesthetic elegance.

In the evenings, Golconda Fort hosts an enchanting light and sound show. Narrating the history of the fort, the show brings its legends to life against the backdrop of the illuminated fort walls.

Recommended Time : 3 hours. Entrance Fee : Rupees 25 per adult for Indians and Rupees 200 per adult for Foreigners. Timings : 9 AM to 5 PM. Closed on Fridays.

Dinner at Eat India Company

Travelers can easily reach the city by opting for a taxi service available at the airport.

Hyderabad enjoys excellent connectivity through trains and buses from various cities and towns across the state and country. Whether by train or bus, reaching the city is conveniently accessible, making transportation to Hyderabad a straightforward journey.

When I reached Hyderabad years back in 2009, the two things I kept in my mind was to visit the famous Charminar and to watch the Avatar movie at Prasad’s IMAX. During two months stay, I visited Charminar numerous time and also watched the Avatar at Prasads. But, while exploring Hyderabad, I found that there are much more to visit in Hyderabad. Grand Palaces carrying the legacy of Nizams and his office-bearers, Museums showing the prosperity of its old residents, a mud fort with its glorious past, amazing lakes, incredible temples, big mosques, tombs, film city, cyber city, outstanding colleges, shopping malls, street shops, world famous pearls, mouth-watering biryani ..Hyderabad has a glorious past to discover and incredible present to experience. Club all these with the nearby attractions of Sri Sailam Tiger Reserve, Beaches of Vishakhapattanam, Beauty of Ajanta and Ellora , Ruins of Hampi and Pattadakal (All are at overnight journey distance from Hyderabad), this part of India is the home to the every fantasy of a traveller’s dream.

I compiled this list to give you a brief idea about the must visit places in Hyderabad. Some places like Falaknuma Palace, Shilparamam, Taramati Baradari, Chilkur Balaji Temple etc. are not included in this list, because I was not able to visit those places. You require at least a week to experience the life in Hyderabad. Luckily, hotels in Hyderabad are available in plenty and they provide a pleasant stay to its customers.

1. Charminar and Mucca Masjid: Built by Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 AD, this structure is the global icon of Hyderabad. Situated in the old city of Hyderabad, it is a massive and impressive structure with four minarets. This two-stories square structure of granite, mortar and marble is a signature style of Islamic Architecture.

Just 100 meters away from Charminar, Mecca Mosque was also built by Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah. It is one of the largest mosque in India. Its central arch is believed to be built using the bricks made from the soil brought from the Mecca, the holiest site of Islam, thus giving the mosque its name.

2. Salarjung Museum: This museum is considered as world’s largest one man art collection. Located at the southern bank of Musi River, it is one of the three National Museums of India. It includes over 43,000 art objects, 9,000 manuscripts and 47,000 printed books from India, the Middle East, Europe and the Far East.

It has 38 galleries spread over two floors. There are further coordinating sections such as the Education Wing, Photo Section, Chemical Conservation Laboratory and a Display Section.

3. Chowmohalla Palaces: This official residence of Nizam is unique in style and elegance. From the date of its construction in 1751, it was one of the finest royal residences in India. The palace consists two courtyard, a Durbar Hall decorated by the chandeliers, beautiful gardens and fountains.

4. Golconda Fort: Located 11 kms west of the city of Hyderabad, Golconda is a Telugu term for Shepherd’s Hill. It is believed that a shepherd boy came across an idol on the hill. This led to the construction of a mud fort by the then Kakatiya dynasty ruler of the kingdom around the site.It is considered as the largest mud fort in India. It also served as a vault for the world-famous diamonds mainly Kohinoor and Hope. You can also watch an excellent sound and light show in the evening.

5. Qutub Shahi Tombs: These are tombs of the seven Qutub Shahi rulers and located about 2 kms away from Golconda Fort. These tombs stand on a raised platform and display a distinctive style, a mixture of Persian, Pashtun and Hindu forms. The tombs are graceful structures with intricately carved stonework and are surrounded by landscaped gardens.

6. Birla Temple: It is made of 2000 tons of pure Rajsthani marble on a high hillock. The chief deity of this temple is Lord Venkateshwara. The temple complex overlooking the southern side of Hussain Sagar offers a magnificent panoramic view of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. In the evening, you can watch a beautiful sunset behind the hills from the temple. It presents a colorful and spectacular sight when illuminated at night.

7. Parks in Hyderabad: Hyderabad is the home of the many beautiful parks with some special attractions.

Lumbini Park is located on the bank of Hussain Sagar. In the evening, a beautiful laser show is organised here everyday. Boat ride to monolithic Buddha Statue in Hussain Sagar is also available from this park.

NTR Garden is located at the walkable distance of 1.5 kms from Lumbini Park, along the road passing through the secretariat building. It is famous for its beautiful fountain, floral garden and bonsai garden.

Public Gardens is also a beautiful park near State Assembly and A.P.State Museum. Boat-rides are also available in a large lake inside public gardens.

8. Hussain Sagar: This lake is a wonderful place to hangout in Hyderabad, specially in the evening. Many landmarks of Hyderabad like Birla Temple, Lumbini Park, NTR Garden are located on the different corner of this lake. Walking along the Necklace road on the bank of this lake is one of the best memorable experience of Hyderabad, and if you go to visit Lumbini Park, don’t forget to take a boat-ride from there to the monolithic Buddha Statue in the middle of the lake.

9. Ramoji Film City: It is one of the largest integrated film city in India. The large area of film city consists many hotels, restaurants, parks and recreation centers. For the purpose of film shoots, it houses the settings of Hawa Mahal, Gateway of India, Golconda Fort, A Railway Station, An Airport, and even you can see the letter HOLLYWOOD on a hilltop, just like the original Hollywood.The ticket cost of a general visit for an adult in Rs.600 a day and for a child it is Rs.500 a day.

10. Malls, Multiplexes and the Paradise: There are lot malls, outlets, departmental stores and multiplexes available across the Hyderabad from Jublee Hills to Begumpet. Major shopping malls are Hyderabad Central and GVK One Mall.Prasads IMAX 3-D is one of the best cine-plex to watch 3-D movies in India. Apart from that, Hyderabad is also famous for its mouth-watering Hyderabadi Biryani . Paradise in Ambedkar Nagar is one of the best place to try the both, veg. and non-veg. Biryani. It also offers take-away facilities.

Despite of all these attractions and its popularity in the tourist circuit as a Heritage City, Hyderabad lacks a fast and efficient public transport systems. Massive jams are very common in the most part of the city. But, after all this state of Nizams is a very good place to visit and spend few days in the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan. You can book any of the Hyderabad-Hotels to enjoy your journey to the pearl city. Before your visit, just make an idea of all the places you wish to visit, because Hyderabad is so vast and so incredible, that sometimes you may feel your 2-3 days stay are not sufficient to explore it properly.

Hyderabad is a big metropolitan city, perfectly safe for solo travellers. It also has a good network of public transport. You should enjoy your stay there.

Yes, I think you can enjoy all these places in a week time. You will require a full day for Ramoji Film City, half day at Salarjung Museum and half day at Chowmohalla Palace. Also add half day for Falaknuma Palace. Have a great trip.

I didn’t have any arrangements for the upcoming weekend in Hyderabad, so a trip to Hampi by myself sounded like a nice relaxing getaway. Like most of my travel arrangements, this one was also done on the spur of the moment. One afternoon, armed just with a smartphone camera and no set itinerary, I purchased my bus tickets.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in India located near Hospet town in the Karnataka state, India.

Beautiful temples, palace ruin, aquatic structure remains, historic market lanes, royal pavilions, bastions, royal platforms, treasury buildings, and a seemingly infinite list of other sights may all be found at Hampi. Hampi is both a pilgrim’s pleasure and a backpacker’s utopia.

How to reach Hampi?

Train – Hospet is the nearest railway station from Hampi (about 12km).
Bus – There are a lot of buses from Hyderabad to both Hospet & Kamlapur (3km away from Hampi), and it costs approx Rs 800 for a 7 hour journey. If you’re getting off in Hospet, you can catch a local bus to Hampi for about Rs. 15 that runs every 10 minutes and stops at Hospet. From Hospet to Hampi, a rickshaw would run you between Rs 150 and 200.

Eventually, I began my journey aboard a sleeper bus on a Friday night. Although I detest taking buses, the trip itself was OK.

Day 1 in Hampi!

It’s six in the morning, and I can already make out the boulders in the area. I’m anxious about how I’m going to get about Hampi because I haven’t made any plans. I chose to get here from Kamlapur, which is three kilometres distant from Hampi. As soon as I step off the elevator, a few autowalas are circling the tourists and demanding steep prices for neighbouring locations.

I didn’t have much time to plan my day because it was an impromptu vacation, but I managed to secure a homestay in the Hampi village at a reasonable price. While I was riding in an auto-rickshaw and taking in the scenery, I also learned how to get around and tour the neighbourhood. The autowala was also quite helpful; he offered me lots of pointers and his contact information in case I needed to get around in Hampi. The best options are buses, which run every 10 minutes and cost about Rs. 8 to get from Kamlapur to Hampi.

Cycling is the ideal method to see Hampi if you’re a solitary tourist or travelling with a group of young people. Renting a bicycle costs Rs 150 per day. Cycling was enjoyable because I went in the rainy season (July). However, I advise having alternative options in the summer because it is really hot here and you can’t enjoy riding a bicycle because you will quickly become dehydrated or feel ill. Get a map from the Hampi Bazaar and go exploring on your own. I did the same thing since getting lost and having to figure things out on your own is half the fun.

You’ll run into English-speaking rickshaw drivers who will offer to show you around Hampi for the full day. They claim that the temples are so far away and that they’ll show you everything swiftly while charging Rs 800-1000 each day and possibly more.

AVOID THEM! Rickshaw rides are not common among travellers. All of that is intended for aunts and uncles.

It will be a memorable experience to visit the once-grand capital of the Vijayanagar empire. You might anticipate seeing nothing except the ruins of a once-thriving location. Therefore, Hampi is respectfully referred to as the “City of Ruins.”

The homestay I chose (Sudha Home Stay) was fortunately only 400 metres from the Virupaksha temple, and the view from the rooftop of my accommodation was really stunning—on one side, you can see the Tungabhadra river, and on the other, it’s just stones and temples. Numerous tiny shops may be found for clothing, antiques, cuisine, bicycles, rentals, and restaurants.

At eight in the morning, I rented a bicycle and began my tour of Hampi. I obtained a local map listing all the must-see attractions in Hampi. I started at the Virupaksha Temple before moving on to the nearby Kadalekalu Ganesha. There are many places in Hampi village that are close together, so you won’t need to commute, but the auto wallas won’t tell you everything.

Kadalekalu Ganesha On the northeastern slope of the Hemakuta hill, a massive boulder was used to chisel out this enormous statue of Ganesha. The name of this monument comes from the way its belly resembles a Bengal gramme (Kadalekalu in the local tongue).

My next points were Krishna Temple, Badavi Lingam, and Ugra Narasimha.

Krishna Temple The king (Krishnadevaraya) constructed this temple in 1513 AD to commemorate the conquering of the eastern kingdom of Udayagiri or Utkala (in the present day Orissa state). The statue of Balakrishna served as the temple’s primary idol (Lord Krishna as infant). This idol is currently on display in Chennai’s state museum. The history of this temple and Ulkala’s conquering is laid out on a sizable slab that was erected inside the temple’s courtyard. One of the must-see attractions in Hampi is this. The carvings are particularly magnificent, with the Yalis (the mythical lion) on the pillars and stunning carvings of elephant balustrades at the entrances to the temple hall.

Ugra Narasimha Laxmi Narasimha is seen at the Ugra Narasimha Statue in Hampi. One stone block was used to chisel the statue. Among the entire collection of monuments and artefacts at the site, this one-stone statue of Lord Narasimha is regarded as an important monument. Hampi has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the south of Hampi is where you’ll find the Ugra Narasimha Statue. The Ugra Narasimha statue at Hampi is 6.7 metres tall. At Hampi, the Ugra Narasimha is situated atop the Hemkunta Hills.

Badavilinga Temple This is the largest Linga image in Hampi. Located next to the Lakshmi Narasimha statue the Linga is housed inside a chamber with an opening in the front. A close look on this icon can reveal three eyes (depicting the three eyes of Shiva) carved on it. Legend has it that this was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name (Badva means poor in local tongue).

You can connect the story these temples and pillars tell with the period when humans must have carved them if you walk alone or spend some quiet time with them.

This area is indeed quite lovely, spotless, and well-maintained by the government. In every ruin there are guards, and Hampi has no trash.

I had more time to appreciate nature and the surrounding beauty because I was riding a bike. Being by myself allowed me to stop frequently for photos and thoroughly investigate my route. The breeze was fantastic, and the weather was great.

After that, I went to see some maintained and royal monuments. It’s odd to see that one of the lovely buildings that was unharmed during the siege of the city is this one.

Lotus Mahal & Elephant Stables Also known as Chitrangani Mahal and Kamal Mahal, this falls under the secular or nonreligious categories of structures in Hampi. It’s peculiar to note that this is one of the beautiful structures that were left undamaged during the siege of the city. This long building with a row of domed chambers was used to ‘park’ the royal elephants. There are 11 domed tall chambers; some of them are inter- connected. The center one is specially decorated and big. Probably the musicians and the associated band troupes had been using this during ceremonies involving elephant processions.

I was however anticipating seeing the most anticipated monuments and was daydreaming about their beauty and architecture. There are 85 places to view if you see by name or by Hampi. This extensive list cannot be completed in two days, and the majority of them are so little and close to one another that you are unaware that you have visited so many locations in such a short period of time.

When I made my 3-day reservation last year, it was regrettably cancelled, thus it was on my list of unfinished business. So, this time, I planned a 2-day vacation and was able to see all the attractions.

Stone Chariot was my next stop, and as you can see, both the monument itself and its surroundings are stunning.

Stone Chariot ( Vithala Temple ) The “Stone Chariot”, as it is often referred is the flagship tourist attraction of Hampi. This is not a chariot ,as the name suggests, rather a shrine built like a chariot. This is located inside the Vittala Temple campus. You would be visiting the Stone Chariot as part of your Vittala Temple tour. In mythology Lord Vittala is an aspect of Lord Vishnu (See Gods of Hampi and Mythology of Hampi). Garuda (lord of eagles) is the vehicle (mount) of Lord Vishnu. The Stone Chariot once contained the icon on Garuda, though the shrine is empty now. This shrine is in the axis of the massive Vittala Temple and faces the sanctum of Vittala Temple.

I am almost finished with the day’s tour and decided to take a nap in order to recharge before spending the evening at Hemakuta Hill and waving farewell to the sun:)

It was a lovely day, and I made sure to mention all the noteworthy elements. I intended to see the sunrise from Matanga Hill to start the following day.

Day 2 in Hampi!

I had a fantastic day the day before, so I decided to start my day a little early to see the sunrise from Matanga Hill. I got up early and started walking there at 5:20 in the morning. I had to arrive in time to view the sunrise, and while I kept checking my watch, I noticed that many other kids were also ascending the hill to observe the same thing.

The hilltop requires 600 stairs and a rather precarious path to reach. I took 25 minutes to get there, but it was well worth it because of the magnificent view. I was standing on the temple’s roof, where the Pujari (temple priest), who spoke excellent English, was giving out free water and tea to passersby.

I couldn’t see the sunrise as expected due to the clouds, but the experience of ascending and sitting on top of the hill, the view, the breeze, and the freshness made my morning so energising and motivated. Now, I have a plan for the rest of my day.

In order to explore more intriguing monuments, I rented the bicycle once more and travelled as indicated on the map. My next stop was the Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex, Queen’s Bath, Old Palace, Mahanavami Dibba, Pushkarani, Hippie Island, Coracle Ride, and Hampi Bazaar.

Queen’s Bath For some mysterious reasons this was called as the queen’s bath. But in all probability this was a royal pleasure complex for the king and his wives.

Pushkarni Pushkaranis are sacred tanks attached to temples. Most of the large temples in Hampi has a tank attached to it. The tanks cater to the ritual and functional aspects of the temple and life surrounding it.

Hippie Island Virapapur Gadde or also known as Hippie Island in Hampi, is a small place located across the Tungabhadra River, separating the historical part from an area with a smooth rhythm.

Things to do in Hippie Island in Hampi

Backpackers will love Hippie Island in Hampi, a symbol of natural beauty noted for its relaxed atmosphere and the placement of all guesthouses, hostels, or campsites.

The majority of hotels also have restaurants that serve delicious meals and cold beers—both of which are prohibited in Hampi—while providing stunning views of the river, the ruins, or the picturesque rice fields.

You will undoubtedly grow quite attached to this location, whether you choose to live in opulent surroundings or remain in modest huts or rooms, enjoy the flavours of Indian and Western food, or simply relax on any terrace overlooking the river.

Many of these cafes also function as guest hotels, where you may find inexpensive, basic rooms or more opulent ones.

There are plenty of activities to do while visiting this location for a few days, but you should, above all, just rest and do nothing. Here are some ideas for things to do on this hippie island and reasons why you must visit it on your trip to India.

Coracle Ride A circular shaped country boat to cross the river. A huge floating basket is a more appropriate description than calling it a boat. They are huge flat craft to ferry people & sheep (yes sheep!). About 6 feet in diameter, coracles are made of bamboo, cane, plastic sheets and a fine coating of bitumen to make it leak proof!

Hemakuta Hill Temple Thanks to its architecture these temples are mistaken for Jain Temples. In fact most of them are dedicated to Siva worship. These smart looking compact temples with pyramid-like roofs resemble that of the Jain temples.

Tungabhadra Dam, Hospet The Tungabhadra Dam also known as Pampa Sagar is constructed across the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna River. [ The dam is in Hosapet, Ballari district of Karnataka. It is a multipurpose dam serving irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, etc.

Where to Eat in Hampi?

Hampi is a totally vegetarian and alcohol-free location. However, you must travel to the “Hippie Island” if you really want non-vegetarian cuisine or alcohol.

A must-visit in Hampi are the eateries listed below.

I’ve eaten at the Mango Tree restaurant in Hampi Bazaar for both breakfast and evening. Food that is both hygienic and tasty, as well as a nice location to relax with background music.
Tibetan Kitchen – All Tribes Coffee Shop: Tourists abound at this coffee and chai establishment. Sadly, I was unable to visit there.
Open-air dining options may be found in Hampi Island’s guest homes, including Mowgli, Hema, Funky Monkey, Nargila Guest House, etc.

Solo travel to Hampi is completely worthwhile, both financially and in terms of the time spent there. For all it has to offer, it’s a location unlike any other. One is sure to wonder about the history of the settlement when they see the enormous boulders and the remnants of the temples and palaces. This location attracts a wide variety of tourists all year long as a result.

II went to Hampi on a hiking trip and fell in love with it right away. Any ardent tourist considering a trip to Hampi will undoubtedly feel the same way.

The joys of traveling solo are endless. It is freeing to explore new places alone—you can go where you please, eat when you want, and enjoy quality time with yourself uninterrupted. The interest in solo travel has been slowly rising for a while, in tandem with the desire for deeper, slower, more connective trave l. For many, solo travel is the perfect way to achieve this—it provides an opportunity to trust your instinct, go with your gut, and get lost in the experience. You rely on yourself rather than on others’ whims or desires.

But, if you’re not a seasoned solo traveler, it can be a daunting prospect. In an age of constant connectivity, the idea of being alone for an extended period of time is stark. Below, we spoke to travelers who frequently book solo trips about their golden rules for traveling alone.

Dining alone isn’t weird

For most people, the thought of dining alone is one of the biggest barriers to traveling solo. But once you get past the conviction that everyone is noticing or judging you, it’s a totally freeing experience. “Dining alone isn’t as uncommon as you might imagine,” says Estée Lalonde, a creative director and influencer with a passion for solo travel. “I personally find it empowering! Sometimes I bring a book with me or watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix with my headphones on, but other times I just enjoy the atmosphere and end up chatting to the people at the table next to me.”

Book counter dining at restaurants if it's too weird for you

If you are someone who does feel uncomfortable about dining alone, opt for a bar or counter seat. It’s much less intimidating than having a whole table to yourself, and you are more likely to end up chatting to the staff or the person sitting next to you. "The first time I went out for a meal alone, I went to JG Melon on the Upper East Side of New York City ,” Sarah James, Condé Nast Traveller ’s deputy digital editor, says. “I took a book, and nervously shuffled onto a bar stool for my burger—but ended up chatting away to the charming bartender and the women sat next to me. Now I often opt for a counter seat when eating alone, and no longer take a book with me. Either I end up talking to someone or just enjoy the peace. A general rule I live by—we're all so wrapped up in our own lives, no one is paying much attention to other people."

Consider a hostel

Not only are hostels affordable, but they're also great places to meet fellow travelers—whether they're in the same solo boat as you or not. Many have a cheap bar onsite that allows you to fall into natural conversation with compatriots who may become friends, or at least will have great tips for things to do.

Fake it till you make it

Most people feel nervous about meeting new people, and introverts especially struggle to make the first move when in a new place. But remember that everyone is in the same boat, and most solo travelers will have experienced those same emotions. The first five seconds are the hardest, but once you’ve introduced yourself, you’ll quickly realize it wasn’t as big a deal as you originally thought. You’d kick yourself if you let a bit of shyness ruin your trip, so use that as the motivation you need to approach a fellow traveler. And remember, if you present with confidence, that will show—fake it til you make it is a reliable life rule to follow.

Never consolidate all of your assets

“This is a lesson that I learned the hard way after getting pickpocketed in a crowded Jerusalem marketplace,” says global digital director Arati Menon, “I had stupidly carried all my credit cards and cash with me—luckily no passport!—in a single wallet and as a result, had no way of paying the hotel bill later that day when I checked out. Now, I always split my cards and cash (and IDs) across various places: wallet, purse, luggage—and if possible, store at least one of these in a locked safe back at the hotel.”

Don’t fear loneliness

“Remember that a bit of loneliness can be bracing and character-building,” says Toby Skinner, Condé Nast Traveller ’s features director. “My experience traveling is generally that people are decent, kind and interesting—and you found that out most acutely by being alone (whereas everyone leaves couples well alone.) Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been on my own—like when I was stranded in Nanjing at 2 a.m. by a delayed train in 2001, and a local student let me bunk in his dorm room for the night.”

Take the train

“While even the most extroverted of travelers avoid chit chat like the plague on a plane, I have found traveling by train to be a much more social means of transport," says associate editor Hannah Towey. "Last summer, I traveled solo on the Amtrak Coastal Starlight from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and spent the entirety of the 9-hour journey in the communal observation lounge, where fellow travelers rotated in and out, sharing tables and playing cards while admiring the views. As the sun set on the second half of the trip, a few musically-inclined passengers formed an impromptu band complete with an acoustic guitar and mandolin. Word slowly spread and others trickled in from other parts of the train to take turns singing songs in different languages. It might take a few more hours than a flight, but who knows, you might even find the Ethan Hawke to your Julie Delpy and spend a spontaneous evening together in Vienna.”

Plan around cultural events

Arriving at a destination just as the locals are gearing up for an important cultural event can be an incredible way to immerse yourself straight away. Look up religious festivals, bank holidays, and street parties to see what time is best to visit and plan accordingly. You’ll get a real flavor of the people, the food, and even the music, and you might end up making friends along the way.

Research solo travel in your destination

As obvious as “do your research” sounds, it’s an important step to remember. Look at online forums and speak to people who have previously visited the destination. What safety precautions should you be taking? Is it safe to walk between locations, or is it better to use taxis? Are taxis easy to find? What is the destination's culture like after dark? For women, in particular, it is best to plan ahead to avoid getting stranded in remote neighborhoods after dark.

Have a rough plan for each day

It can feel daunting waking up in a brand new destination and not knowing where to start, so make sure to create vague itineraries for your trip. What are your non-negotiables in this destination? Any big attractions you want to tick off? Restaurants you’ve been desperate to try? Beaches you’ve always wanted to visit? “I like to have 3-5 little activities in mind for each day, like visiting a particular store or trying the local cuisine,” Estée tells us. “If you have a bit of direction you can leave space in between each activity to be spontaneous and discover the local area.”

Build in group activities

Booking tours and group events is a great way to meet other travelers. Most hostels have a list of activities available for guests to sign up for, and if not, then there are walking tours or live music events at local bars. “Try to see people as opportunities," Toby advises. “I'd build in communal activities to your itinerary and remember that you’ll probably never see these people again, so you have nothing to lose in almost any interaction and possibly a lot to gain—though there might be a touch of male privilege in that.”

Walk as much as you can

“Sometimes when I travel to a new place, I can be nervous to leave my bed as a solo traveler,” Estée admits. “As soon as I get outside and start walking I feel better—like I’m part of the city and that I belong there!” Exploring by foot is a great way to get to know the bones of a destination. You’ll soon create a mental map of the area nearest your accommodation and might stumble upon some hidden gems you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.

Allow yourself to be spontaneous

On that note, try to allow yourself some spontaneity. Having a rough plan is definitely advisable, but don’t stop yourself from following your gut if you have a sudden urge to pop into a shop, follow the sound of the crowds or head for the beach. It’s often the spur-of-the-moment decisions that result in the best experiences.

Bring good books

It’s easy to whip out your phone and rely on scrolling when you’re by yourself, and while that is a great way to decompress if you’re feeling jittery, there are few things more romantic than settling in at a street-side cafe and getting lost in the pages of a good book .

Bring a journal

Journaling has become a popular pastime of late, and keeping a travel journal is a great way to combine the mental health benefits of getting out your thoughts and feelings with the memories and emotions of traveling solo. “I find all of that time alone enables me to clear my head, and journaling is a great way to regulate those emotions,” Estée explains.

Keep a separate copy of your personal details

Sounds old school, but in lieu of printing out paper copies of all your bank details, phone numbers, and accommodations details, try keeping a document of all your information and emailing it to yourself. This way, if you lose your phone, you can ask the reception of your accommodation or staff at a hotel/restaurant/bar to borrow a phone and log into your email account to access anything you need. It’s also worth memorizing your card details and any emergency phone numbers (both personal and local emergency service numbers).

Take other safety precautions

There are plenty of ways to protect yourself when traveling alone. Sharing your location with your friends and family back home is a lovely way to keep in touch without having to actually message them—they can watch your journey from afar and keep track of your whereabouts if you haven’t contacted them for a while. Remember to bring a padlock for your backpack and lockers if you’re staying in hostels, and study basic phrases in the language of your destination, just in case you get lost and need some help.

Don’t forget insurance

There’s always something that doesn’t go to plan on any trip, and as a solo traveler, you’ll want to make sure you mitigate any stress that comes from changing itineraries. Buying travel insurance is the best way to protect yourself from any transport cancellations and unforeseen circumstances, and will cover any costs from injuries or thefts. Sounds scary, but it’ll be worth it if the worst happens!
