After Rumored Setbacks, Star Trek 4 Has Taken A Huge Step Forward

Hopefully this time the project will live long and prosper!

Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond

It’s been too long since Star Trek graced the big screen. The last time Trekkies watched the USS Enterprise go into warp speed in theaters was back in 2016 with Star Trek Beyond . Since then, Paramount has been trying to bring back Chris Pine ’s Captain Kirk and his crew for one last hurrah, but setback after setback has been rumored to bring down the project. However, the latest news about Star Trek 4 brings some revived hope for another galactic adventure.

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions have reportedly found a new screenwriter for Star Trek 4 in The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey. Per the news that comes from Variety , Yockey will pen the script for what’s expected to be the final installment of the saga starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban , John Cho and Simon Pegg . It’s a huge step forward for the long-gestating project, but it should be noted that this report signals Star Trek 4 is still in early development over at Paramount.

Steve Yockey started his career in Hollywood as a writer for television shows like Awkward , Scream and Supernatural before developing HBO’s The Flight Attendant from the novel of the same name. The series starring Kaley Cuoco was cancelled after two seasons, but was critically-acclaimed throughout its run and earned Cuoco numerous accolades, alongside other aspects of the production.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Yockey has another series coming soon to the 2024 TV schedule with Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives . The supernatural detective comedy is based on the DC Comics property by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, and is set to premiere for those with a Netflix subscription on April 25.

Over the years, there’s been numerous writers and directors attached to the next Star Trek movie, from Madame Web ’s S.J. Clarkson previously in talks to direct back in 2018, to Fargo ’s Noah Hawley being attached to write and direct back in 2019. WandaVision ’s Matt Shakman was last involved for a year before he decided to leave the project to direct the upcoming Fantastic Four movie . According to Shakman, while he very much enjoyed his time working on Star Trek 4 alongside J.J. Abrams, returning to Marvel Studios to revive the comic book crew, was “too hard to pass up.”

This step forward for Star Trek 4 comes just a few months after rumors came out that Paramount was thinking of rebooting the franchise again . A couple of months ago, it was also reported that Andor ’s Toby Haynes will direct another Star Trek movie based on a script by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ’s Seth Grahame-Smith .

While we know very little about the direction of Star Trek 4 , here’s hoping the main cast led by Chris Pine will in fact come back once more! Check out our ranking of all the Star Trek movies as we imagine what could be in store for the iconic Starfleet crew!

Star Trek 4 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

Star Trek 4 potential release date: When can we expect Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 cast: who's going to be in star trek 4, star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 still isn't close to being released, but we do at least know that development continues on the long-awaited movie .

In March 2024, it was reported that Steve Yockey – who developed The Flight Attendant – had become the latest writer to tackle a new draft for the movie, which is intended to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña.

This is separate from the other two Star Trek movies in the works: a prequel movie directed by Toby Haynes and Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Section 31 , which finished filming in March 2024.

We'll likely see both of those movies before we see Star Trek 4 , but at least it should be released one day. But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

Is Star Trek 4 confirmed?

As far as we know, Star Trek 4 is definitely going to happen despite the fact we're nearing eight years since the last movie, Star Trek Beyond , was released.

The long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce with Matt Shakman directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

We've heard nothing since about a potential director for the movie, but at least we know is that Star Trek 4 is in active development at Paramount, given that there is now a new writer on board.

director jj abrams and the cast from star trek

Once upon a time, Star Trek 4 was scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2023.

Of course, that never happened, and Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date as of May 2024. There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved seem to have faith in the project moving forward, though, and hopefully a new writer joining is a positive step.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

chris hemsworth as george kirk in star trek

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

star trek beyond chris pine as kirk

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

A new “ Star Trek ” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

Star Trek 4 Writer Confirms Long-Awaited Sequel Is Still Moving Forward

By Maggie Dela Paz

Speaking with Collider , Star Trek 4 writer Lindsey Anderson Beer finally clarified the current status of the long-in-development fourth installment to the J.J. Abrams -produced Star Trek film franchise. Despite its suffering from delays, Beer confirmed that the highly-anticipated project is still moving forward at Paramount Pictures.

“It is, it’s still on the tracks,” She said. “I love that project, and it was another one that I had to hop off of to direct this movie, and that was a hard thing to do. But I love that everybody involved with that project.” However, it’s currently unclear if Beer had already left Star Trek 4 in order to shift her focus on directing Pet Sematary: Bloodlines ,or if her work on the project is temporarily on hold while the Paramount continues its search for a new director .

Star Trek 4’s Pre-Production Setbacks

It has already been nearly four years since Paramount Pictures confirmed the development of Star Trek 4. Since then, the project has undergone multiple creative changes including director changes. Last year, fans began doubting if Star Trek 4 would ever get made after Paramount decided to remove it from their 2023 theatrical release schedule.

In early 2022, during Paramount’s Investors Day Presentation, producer J.J. Abrams confirmed that Star Trek 4 was indeed in active development with the original cast expected to return including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg. As of the now, the project currently has no director attached to it yet after WandaVision’s Matt Shakman exited the movie due to scheduling conflicts with Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four.

Maggie Dela Paz has been writing about the movie and TV industry for more than four years now. Besides being a fan of coming-of-age films and shows, she also enjoys watching K-Dramas and listening to her favorite K-Pop groups. Star Trek 4 Gets Promising Update From Roddenberry Entertainment Exec: 'There Is a Plan'

  • Paramount is planning a new Star Trek movie, with secrecy around the details, but fans can expect it "very near future."
  • Practical obstacles have delayed production, but the studio is committed to bringing Star Trek back to the big screen.
  • Star Trek 4 has been in development since 2016, with previous scripts exploring different storylines, including bringing back Chris Hemsworth.

Speaking at SXSW, Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth offered an update on the Star Trek franchise, revealing that “a plan” is in place for a fourth movie. Coming via Screen Rant , Roth was forced to keep things close to his chest for now, but was able to reveal some details about Paramount’s intentions with the world of Star Trek and the development of Star Trek 4 , saying that a new movie will come out “in the very near future.”

“I am not able to say much, but I can say that it is Paramount's intent to figure out the Star Trek side of movies and what's going on there. There's every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future. There's a lot of secrecy around what's going to happen there. But there is a plan getting into place. And we're very excited to see it return to the big screen.”

However, while Roth sounds hopeful that a new Star Trek movie will happen, he does admit that, sometimes, “practical things” do get in the way . Especially when it comes to the best laid plans.

“And I will tell you that you want to do it the right way. And yet, practical things get in [the way]. People a lot of times are like, ‘Oh, why isn't this happening or that happening?’ And sometimes those questions are really good questions. And other times, there's a lot you don't know that is happening behind the scenes that can make things more difficult than you would think. So all in all, we're getting there to my understanding, and we're excited, and plans are being put in place. And I know that from the standpoint of the studio, there is no lack of recognition of wanting and needing a Star Trek film coming out.”

Star Trek 4 Has Been in the Works Since 2016

The modern world of Star Trek on the big screen first began back in 2009, introducing younger versions of such iconic characters as James T. Kirk and Spock and exploring their early adventures as they boldly go where no man has gone before.

Star Trek 4 has been in development for years now, with a further sequel being discussed since the release of Star Trek Beyond back in 2016. Several scripts for the project have been written, with the follow-up going through several different stories, with one scrapped idea being to bring back Marvel star Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk using time travel.

Will Star Trek 4 Borrow from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home?

Previous Star Trek films have borrowed from The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. Will The Voyage Home be next in line?

Writer Lindsey Anderson Beer revealed at the end of last year that she is no longer attached to Star Trek 4 , meaning that we know even less about the sequel and its cast and crew than we did before. But, with the Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto-led franchise still popular, fans would no doubt love to see them embark on one more adventure. No matter how long it takes.

Alongside Star Trek 4 , Paramount is planning to expand the franchise even further on the big screen following the success of Star Trek on Paramount+. The studio currently has several projects in development, including an origin movie set "decades before" J.J. Abrams' rebooted Star Trek universe, which is all set to be directed by Andor's Toby Haynes.

The now-tossed Star Trek 4 went through many iterations since the first announcement in July 2016 , including a story by legendary Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino, a surprise 2022 Kelvin cast announcement that apparently Chris Pine and company only learned about through the press, and prequel story set “decades before the 2009 film.”

Following the new Star Trek 5 announcement, star Chris Pine reportedly reacted “with a deep sigh” according to Deadline . “Chris is excited learn about this new film through today’s studio announcement,” said a representative for the actor, “because it went really well the last time this happened, right?”

Also expected for the Trek 5 reunion are co-stars Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (“Bones” McCoy), and John Cho (Sulu). Actor Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Chekov in the first three films, passed away in 2016.

While little is known about the planned story of this new film, sources close to Trek 5 development hear that Paramount is pursuing  Dune and  Wonka star Timothée Chalamet for the role of “Sybok,” half-brother of Spock, originated by actor Laurence Luckinbill in 1989.

  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Star Trek 4 Release Date Rumors: When Is It Coming Out?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It has been seven years since audiences last saw Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock in Star Trek: Beyond. Since then, audiences have been wondering about the status of Star Trek 4 , especially after the film was confirmed to be in development and was later delayed indefinitely from its December 2023 release date.

Here’s all the Star Trek 4 release date information we know so far and all the details on when it is coming out.

Is there a Star Trek 4 release date?

Star Trek 4 does not have a release date at the time of writing. However, the project is still in active development, according to J.J Abrams .

The lack of a release date is due to the crew and producers of the film looking for a new director to helm the project after Matt Shakman, who was supposed to direct Star Trek 4, left the film on August 26, 2022, prior to the scheduled commencement of the shoot for Star Trek 4 at the end of 2022, likely because Marvel Studios tapped him to direct their upcoming Fantastic Four MCU reboot.

At the time of writing, the official cast for Star Trek 4 is unknown. However, fans can expect Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg , and John Cho to reprise their roles from previous Star Trek films. Sofia Boutella could also appear in the film and reprise her role of Jaylah from Star Trek Beyond , as she has expressed interest in doing so.

Where is Star Trek 4 coming out?

Star Trek 4 isn’t confirmed to release in theaters anytime soon.

As for what the plot of Star Trek 4 could be, it is unknown. However, the film could continue on from plot points established at the end of Star Trek Beyond, such as Captain Kirk and the rest of the crew of the USS Enterprise going on a new mission following the construction of their new ship, Jaylah honing her skills at Starfleet Academy, and Commander Spock working to develop his relationship with Nyota Uhura after the two reconciled at the end of Star Trek Beyond.

Trekkies have a lot to be thankful for this year as the Star Trek franchise we all know and love shows no signs of slowing down!

As of now, there are four series in production within the entire franchise. Before streaming took over in the mid 2010s, there were only five broadcast series on air including The Original Series ,  The Next Generation ,  Deep Space Nine ,  Voyager , and  Enterprise . Now, with so many additions, both animated and live-action, it seems almost impossible to keep track of what to watch next, but you’ve come to the right place.

If you’ve been wondering when and where you can watch the current and upcoming seasons of Star Trek series and learn what anticipated films are set to be made, read on to find out!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The most recently released live-action series in the franchise received positive reviews and has already been ordered for a third season ahead of its second season release. Strange New Worlds is set a decade before the events of the original series in the 23rd century and offers up a contemporary take on the original series’ episodic storytelling and 1960s design choices.

The main cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. The second season will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15 .

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The adult animated series takes place in the late 24th century in the Star Trek universe, in which Earth is part of the multi-species United Federation of Planets and focuses on Starfleet’s least important starships, the USS Cerritos.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in Summer 2023  with a 10-episode run.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Another wildly popular animated series in the franchise, Nickelodeon’s P rodigy is returning for a second season. The main cast includes Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Dee Bradley Baker, and Kate Mulgrew.

The series, which was met with positive reviews from critics and even received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, has been airing since 2021. While an exact release date has not yet been set, season 2 will arrive this upcoming winter on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

To Boldly Go: How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights

Author: Angela Dalton & Lauren Semmer

Published: 17 January 2023

From the Publisher: “Perfect for fans of  Hidden Figures  and  Mae Among the Stars !  To Boldly Go  tells the true story of Nichelle Nichols and how she used her platform on  Star Trek  to inspire and recruit a new generation of diverse astronauts and many others in the space and STEM fields.

As Lieutenant Uhura on the iconic prime-time television show  Star Trek , Nichelle Nichols played the first Black female astronaut anyone had ever seen on screen. A smart, strong, independent Black woman aboard the starship  Enterprise  was revolutionary in the 1960s when only white men had traveled to outer space in real life and most Black characters on TV were servants.

Nichelle not only inspired a generation to pursue their dreams but also opened the door for the real-life pioneering astronaut Sally Ride, Dr. Mae Jemison, and more.

This empowering tribute to the trailblazing pop culture icon reminds us of the importance of perseverance and the power of representation in storytelling. You just might be inspired to boldly go where no one like you has ever gone before!”

Star Trek: Phase II

Gene Roddenberry an seiner Schreibmaschine

Gene Roddenberry an seiner Schreibmaschine

6 paul giamatti roles that show he’s a perfect star trek villain.

5 Ways Star Trek: Discovery’s Ending Set Up Starfleet Academy

Paul giamatti’s 10 best movies, ranked, the rock was in star trek dwayne johnson's voyager role explained.

  • Paul Giamatti's impressive career suits him for Star Trek's villain role, attracting audiences of all ages beyond just the YA demographic.
  • Giamatti's experience in roles with complex depths, from villains to distressed teachers, prepares him well for his Starfleet Academy character.
  • Despite potential fan criticism, Giamatti's enjoyment of past roles shows his ability to navigate negativity, making him well-suited for Star Trek.

Paul Giamatti has been cast as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 's villain, and the actor's impressive career proves how suitable he is for the role. Giamatti is the second starry addition to the cast of Paramount+'s next Star Trek show, which also includes Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter as Starfleet Academy's Chancellor. Executive produced by Noga Landau and Alex Kurtzman, who is also directing the series premiere , Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will begin production in fall 2024 in Toronto. The involvement of Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter should mean that Starfleet Academy has audience appeal beyond its YA demographic .

Paul Giamatti is a Star Trek fan , so perhaps it's unsurprising that he's signed on for the upcoming Paramount+ show. Giamatti's casting was announced on X by the official Star Trek on Paramount Plus account, which stated that his villain would be a recurring guest character on the show. It's been teased that Paul Giamatti's character will have an ominous connection to one of the new Starfleet Academy cadets . As both a Star Trek fan and one of Hollywood's best-loved character actors, Paul Giamatti is perfectly suited for this villain role in Starfleet Academy .

Star Trek: Discovery's final season laid the groundwork for several elements of its upcoming spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

6 Limbo in Planet of the Apes (2001)

Paul giamatti will be no stranger to star trek's prosthetics..

It's unclear if Paul Giamatti is playing a human or alien villain in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , but if he is playing an alien, then the actor is no stranger to playing other creatures. Giamatti played Limbo in Tim Burton's 2001 Planet of the Apes remake, opposite Mark Wahlberg. Limbo was a slave trader who came into the possession of Mark Wahlberg's Leo Davidson. Although he was morally dubious rather than outright villainous, the role of Limbo feels like good preparation for playing a Star Trek villain . After all, Limbo ended Planet of the Apes as a relatively reformed character.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

In 2029, Leo Davidson ventures through a space-time storm to rescue his chimp friend, landing on Ashlar, a world ruled by talking apes. With newfound allies, he uncovers his spacecraft's fate and sparks a revolt against ape tyranny. Saved by his chimp companion, Leo returns to Earth, but discovers a deeply disturbing reality.

Although far from being one of Paul Giamatti's greatest movie performances, it's the role that feels most like a training ground for his role as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 's villain. The best Star Trek villains aren't two-dimensional antagonists, and instead have depth of character and the capacity for change. Limbo in Planet of the Apes is just one of many roles that Paul Giamatti has played like this. It just has the added bonus of preparing him for any heavy alien prosthetic make-up that he may have to wear.

Prolific Star Trek guest actor David Warner also starred in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes as Senator Sandar.

5 Chuck Rhoades in Billions (2016 - 2023)

Paul giamatti's been playing a tv villain for years..

Paul Giamatti has played U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades in Billions for the past seven years . A specialist in financial corruption, Rhoades has relentlessly pursued billionaire Bobby Axelrod across all seven seasons of Billions . As the show went on, Paul Giamatti became the villain of the piece, hellbent on punishing billionaires for their obscene levels of wealth. However, he started out from a fairly honorable position, wishing to stamp out rampant financial corruption. Chuck's descent into becoming Billions ' primary antagonist could be good training for Paul Giamatti's role as the unnamed Star Trek: Starfleet Academy villain.

Billions is a drama series created for Showtime that follows hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod's quest to accumulate power and wealth, often leading him to utilize unscrupulous tactics. The one man standing in his way is U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades - who will do what it takes to ensure Axelrod is brought to justice. The series is based on several real-world cases featuring dramatizations and embellishments for entertainment purposes.

Billions ran for seven seasons between 2016 and 2023, meaning that Paul Giamatti is used to the rigors of making prestige television . Having dedicated seven years of his life to a show like Billions , it may be surprising that Paul Giamatti signed on to an upcoming Star Trek TV show . Presumably, this is why Paul Giamatti's role in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is being billed as a recurring guest star for season 1, rather than a series regular. However, the relative freedom of being a recurring guest may entice Giamatti to return for future seasons if Starfleet Academy takes off on Paramount+.

Paul Giamatti stands out as one of cinema's most versatile and memorable actors, with several films in his filmography showcasing his best work.

4 Pig Vomit in Private Parts (1997)

Paul giamatti's breakthrough role was a different type of villain..

Paul Giamatti's breakthrough role in Howard Stern's biopic Private Parts proved that he had a particular skill for conveying boiling rage. Giamatti played Kenny Rushton, dubbed " Pig Vomit " by Stern, with whom he regularly clashed. Kenny was the head of WNBC, which hosted Howard Stern's show. In a 2024 episode of Q with Tom Power , Giamatti revealed that he never knew his character was based on a real-life network head until Stern complimented him for portraying Pig Vomit so accurately .

Private Parts (1997)

Paul Giamatti also described his character in Private Parts as almost " Shakespearean " in its comic buffoonery. Shakespeare and Star Trek have a long history, so Paul Giamatti's understanding of the Bard and how he influences contemporary writing and performing will stand him in good stead. However, it's the levels of rage that Kenny achieves while calling Howard Stern the Antichrist that should make Paul Giamatti an eminently watchable villain in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

3 Dr. Lawrence Hayes in San Andreas (2015)

Paul giamatti masters technobabble in the rock's disaster movie..

Paul Giamatti played seismologist Dr. Lawrence Hayes in Dwayne Johnson's 2015 disaster movie, San Andreas . When the movie opens, Hayes is experimenting with new technology that can predict earthquakes, which becomes pertinent when his colleague Kim is killed by one. Lawrence's technology predicts a massive earthquake heading for San Francisco, and takes to the airwaves to warn the public. Hayes' warnings to evacuate the city aren't taken as seriously as he'd have liked, but thankfully The Rock was on hand to do a lot of the rescuing with his helicopter.

San Andreas

Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as helicopter-rescue pilot Ray Gaines, the 2015 disaster movie San Andreas explores the catastrophic effects of a series of earthquakes caused by a shift in the real-life San Andreas Fault. Set in San Francisco, the film's cast also includes Carla Gugino as Ray's ex-wife Emma, Alexandra Daddario as their daughter Blake, Ioan Gruffudd as Emma's boyfriend Daniel Riddick, and Paul Giamatti as seismologist Dr. Lawrence Hayes.

Mastering Starfleet techno babble is a great skill for any Star Trek actor to have, and Paul Giamatti's role as a seismologist in San Andreas proved he's more than capable. There's a level of ridiculousness to some of the dialog in many Star Trek shows that occasionally veers into the B-movie territory of San Andreas . Thankfully, Paul Giamatti is well-versed in what will be required from him in delivering Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 's techno babble dialog with much-needed gravitas.

One of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's earliest acting roles was in a Star Trek: Voyager episode that played to his strengths as a WWE superstar.

2 The Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Paul giamatti is no stranger to sky-high fan expectations..

Taking on a role in a Star Trek TV show can be a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it's a chance to be part of an iconic franchise that has had a genuinely positive cultural impact. On the other hand, hardcore fans can be out for blood the moment a Star Trek show puts a foot wrong. Thankfully, Paul Giamatti's experience of playing Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should have given him a thick skin for any incoming insults from the more toxic corners of Star Trek fandom.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield returns to the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, dealing with balancing his life as a high school student and his responsibilities as a hero. After reconnecting with his old friend, Harry Osborn, Peter learns details regarding his late father's mysterious past and begins to connect the dots that his father's disappearance, the emergence of new supervillains, and other dark dealings in his city are all connected to Oscorp.

Following the release of Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , fans slated Paul Giamatti's "terrible" Rhino . However, despite fan criticism, Paul Giamatti revealed to Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast that he enjoyed the experience of playing the iconic Spider-Man villain. Giamatti was a fan of the Rhino and had coveted the role for years, so it's heartening to hear that fan criticisms didn't hamper his enjoyment. As a Star Trek fan too, it seems that Paul Giamatti will be able to navigate potential fan negativity surrounding his role in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

1 Paul Hunham in The Holdovers

Paul giamatti played a boarding school teacher with high standards..

One of Paul Giamatti's most recent roles is perhaps his best pre-cursor to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy . In Alexander Payne's Oscar winning movie The Holdovers , Paul Giamatti played grumpy history teacher, Paul Hunham , who was forced to look after the boarding school students who didn't go home for the holidays. Given the tease that his character is connected to a cadet, Paul Giamatti could be playing one of Starfleet Academy's mentors . If that's the case, then Paul Giamatti's villain could turn out to be an evil version of the cranky but sympathetic Paul Hunham in The Holdovers .

The Holdovers

The Holdovers is a comedy-drama film starring Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a prep academy professor hated by peers and students alike. Stuck at the academy for the holidays with no family or friends to visit, he finds himself in the company of a bright-but-troublemaking young student named Angus and the school's head cook, Mary. Together, the three will create a makeshift family as they bond during the holiday season.

Paul Hunham's high-standards and disdain for the privileged and feted students that he taught was played to perfection by Giamatti in The Holdovers . The bond that Paul eventually formed with promising but troubled student Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa) hints at the types of stories that a Starfleet Academy series could tell. Whatever Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau have planned for the YA Star Trek show is clearly enough to convince an actor of Paul Giamatti's talents to come aboard, which makes Star Trek: Starfleet Academy an exciting prospect.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to start shooting in Fall 2024 for a late 2025 or early 2026 release on Paramount+.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4 Filming Set For 2025; Anson Mount Thanks Fans For Patience

Star Trek: Discovery may be coming to an end tomorrow, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will live on, for years to come. The new anchor show for Star Trek on Paramount+ wrapped up production on its third season last week. Now we have the first indication as to when the crew will be returning to Toronto for season 4.

Beaming back to Canada in spring 2025

Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount is back in the USA after finishing up over five months of work on season 3, which is filmed at CBS Stages Canada in Mississauga, Ontario. On Tuesday Mount posted a message on Instagram praising Canada, thanking the country for its hospitality. He added, “We’ll see you again in the spring when ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ goes back into production for season 4!”

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Anson Mount (@ansonmount)

Paramount officially announced they had ordered a fourth season of the series last month. It looks like the soonest cameras will start rolling on again on Captain Pike’s USS Enterprise would be late March 2025, the official beginning of next spring. While ten months may seem like a long hiatus, that is the same amount of time between the end of production on season 2 in July 2022 and the originally planned start of production on season 3 in May 2023. However, the double strikes of 2023 extended the hiatus until December.

Mount thanks fans for their patience

Speaking of that extra-long hiatus between seasons 2 and 3, Anson Mount has a message for the fans. After our report that filming on season 3 was going to wrap up at the end of last week, Anson Mount took to Instagram to make it official. He filmed himself exiting the studio, announcing “That is a wrap on season 3.” As he tried to keep “stuff going on” out of the shot to avoid spoilers, the actor thanked fans for being patient following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, saying, “Thank you for sticking with us and understanding our need to fight.” He talked about how he is also a fan and was thankful he gets to live out his dreams.

I’m sorry it will be so long before they start filming Season 4, but I guess the writers need time to think and write, and of course Paramount isn’t in great financial shape at the moment.

To the cast, writers, directors, costumers, prop people, set makers, lighting folks, camera operators and all the rest — thanks for all your hard work, folks; we fans surely do appreciate it!

I’m curious why it takes so long for season 4 to start production. Any thoughts? Is another production using their sets?

The new Academy series would be my guess. It’s a working studio so I would guess they don’t just leave the sets standing. they break them down and store them so the stages are available for other work or even rented out (hey, it’s money.)

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. There was a reason why they brought that old-ass ISS Enterprise to the futue. LOL

So confused by the financialization of this situation. The strikes pushed them into being a 2023-2024 preproduction/production/wrap show. And now they’re going to wait until 2025, indeed, nearly an entire calendar year, to start this all up again? Surely, it’s cheaper to film 20 episodes in a 12-month span and pay for storage, wrap, and setup just once? I guess this is a cash flow issue. Paramount has the $ for a season at a time? Seems inefficient to an absurd degree. Then again, given the parties involved, far from surprising.

Yeah, I’s sure they had another 10 completed scripts (and all the cash/financing available) to just start right up. I mean writing a good script doesn’t take time – it just springs into existence fully realized…

Oh, wait…actual film production doesn’t work like that…

True, but the timeline is a bit wonky there. Were they not all set to begin filming one year ago but everything stopped because of the two strikes? It really takes 20-ish months (May 2023 to early 2025) to write ten more episodes? Yet the NCIS or Chicago franchises can crank out 50-ish in that same amount of time? I suspect there is more going on here than we’re being told.

Renewal for season 4 was only announced publically a few weeks ago. It’s possible that work on season 4 didn’t start before the producers knew they would actually get another season (although they may have learned before the public announcement)

While filming these episodes they could’ve been writing the next batch of 10. Have fun watching your dunk attempt fly off the backboard, redshirt.

No, it’s clearly a sign of financial limitations. In the past, 26 episodes were written and filmed within a 12-month period. They ran a tight and efficient ship (no pun intended). Modern showrunners and studios just don’t seem to have the same level of financial level-headedness.

I’m glad for the upcoming seasons of SNW. Mount is a solid Captain Pike and seems like a genuinely smart, humble, friendly guy.

I just hope we do actually get season 4 and it isn’t scrapped due to business shenanigans after the impending sale of Paramount, whenever that happens.

I imagine movies and TV are still handled quite differently, but we’ve had 8 years of promise after promise, announcement after announcement, change after change with plans for the movie franchise—and nothing to show for it.

We thought for sure we were getting a season 2 of Prodigy on Paramount+ and, welp. (Thankfully the show itself lives on.)

There is absolutely no need for all these announcements so far in advance that significant things can change, as in ‘oh sorry, that thing we talked about is not actually happening.’ Doesn’t Paramount realize this undermines trust and hurts their brand rather than helping increase streaming subscriptions? Then again—it’s a failing company, so… we’ve not had the brightest officers at the helm of Paramount Global, one assumes.

Anyway, we’re being well trained not to count our Trek chickens before they hatch. I’ll believe it when I can stream it.

sadly anson is a zionist propaganda spewer and beliver and he was called out for it on twitter by most snw fans and alor odf general trek fans and started blocking fans for even trying to show him the facts that the zionist propaganda was all lies by the israilie government and that they were infact commiting genocide and war crimes

Wow that’s allowed to be posted, and when I mock Kurtzman it is banned.

It is truly a pleasure to read your entries. :)

Five misspellings, at least seven incorrect capitalizations, and no punctuation. Or as michelle might write: 5 mispelings, at least Seven incorrect capitalizations and no punctuation

what ever grammar nazi

i type with one hand my left hand and generally on my refurbished early 2015 model MacBook Air so no autocorrect and i am generally watching something while i type or i am pacing around my house while typing so plus my mind runs fast so i have to type out quickly so i do not loose what i want to say

so at least you can read it well enough to get the gist of what i saying

I for one am relieved that the time table suggests a more “regular” interval between seasons (just hoping that SNW will run for more than five seasons). Some seven to ten months to write all the scripts and begin pre-production doesn’t seem exaggerated, even though it would be kinda nice to have SOMEWHAT longer seaons – 12 episodes maybe… but that’s just wishful thinking.

5 seasons and its done.

I think I figured out the Mount hair thing — he is trying to subtly suggest himself for The David Lynch Story.

That’s funny (and true), Kev! :)

My hair tends to fly up in the front too, but since it’s thinning fast, it reveals my shiny head under the white hair! If you remember my dad, my pate looks a lot like his! Now where’s my baseball cap? ;)

His hair is turning into its own Star Base.

i lost all respect for mount and anything he says when he started spewing zionist propaganda that the israilie goverment and military were not comming genocide and other war crimes on Palestinian civilians in gaza and when snw fans and general trek fans called him out on it and tried to show him that what he was beliving and saying was lies and that there were war crimes and genocides being done by the isailie military and goverment he just blocked the fans

well now i have another actor i will be replacing the name of with the character’s name in the opening titles and ending credit much like i have to do with andromeda and the lead actor who is a maga nutjob blacklisted hasbeen

Thanks for sharing

I hope there is a time jump between season 3 and 4 and season 4 opens up with pike now fleet captain stationed at Starfleet head quarters on earth with just a video call to una in the first episode and that is for the rest of the series and una is now captain of the enterprise with James t Kirk as her first officer and the new assistant chief medical officer is Leonard McCoy and the replacement for Sam Kirk is a ensign sulu and then another time jump between seasons 4 and 5 and we see Kirk take over the enterprise from una and McCoy becomes kirks cmo and Spock his first officer and Scotty his chief engineer and the second episode of season five is a remake of the second pilot and the 3rd episode has a newly promoted to lt sulu take over helm officer and uhura is also promoted to full lt and then new episodes for the rest of the season and that leads to snw being retooled into a much needed visually updated remake of tos and the episode prior to the menagerie will have a mid credits scene of pike being burned and crippled by radiation and being placed in his chair

Season 4 and 5 will be the last. They better stretch it out. LOL

I miss the days of TV seasons that started in the fall. Back then, a show either got cancelled or renewed between seasons, but if it got renewed you pretty much knew it would premier in the fall. Oh well, times change.
