Kids' "Pirates & Princesses" Fun Cruise

Took our two girls (aged 5 & 7) on one of the 'Pirates & Princesses' fun cruises - £10 per person (child or adult) for a non-landing day trip between Belfast & Cairnryan, depart Belfast at 11:30, returning 17:45. The kids get to dress up (two pirates here), and there are organised activities laid on onboard (treasure hunt, magic tricks, face painting and a few others, laid on in the Pod Lounge area) on top of the usual kids' facilities you'd get on a 'normal' cruise. A few years back, these used to be a 3-hr trip around Belfast Lough on a dedicated sailing, but now that it's on regular sailings, there are usually a few bemused-looking passengers trying to figure out what's going on as well. While it's not exactly a relaxing cruise - the atmosphere in the Pod Lounge is best described as 'mayhem' for most of the crossing, with the kids doing plenty of running around - for what you pay for it it's a decent day out. The activities keep the kids amused for most of the crossing (colouring sheets are handed out to keep them busy during turnaround at Cairnryan, when the crew mostly disappear), while the Pod Lounge has the ship's cinema, iPads, Xboxes and other gadgets that can be played with during the trip - plenty to be getting on with. Your ticket comes with discount vouchers for the on-board shop and restaurant, but there's no problem with bringing your own food on board and treating it as an extended picnic if you don't want to pay on-board prices. We used the restaurant on the return leg - service is a little slow but the food was good and prices not too extortionate (£23 for two adult & two kids meals with drinks). My main worry with this was that 7hrs would be too long for the kids, and that boredom would set it, but that didn't prove to be a problem, and it turned out to be a fun day for them and not too stressful for the adults. There are other themed trips available (Superhero or Teddybears' Picnic) depending on what your kids are interested in. Definitely worth it, for all that it costs.

Great and easy trip. Great facilities in board and not to expensive. Would definately travel this way again

We had planned to Amsterdam from London by Eurostar 5 hrs) but left to too late leading most expensive rail ticket costs Stlg 425for 3 pax 1 way. With lots of time to kill, we chanced on this sea route to Holland re Stena Dutch Flyer on TA and it turned out to be one of our best decisions/bargain at Stlg 200 by train from London to Amsterdam via Harwich to Port of Hook, then rail on to Rotterdam to AMS . The swedish mattress/beds on the Hollandia were indeed very comfortable and for a 3 person we got the outer room with a view to the sea (not that we would see anything at night). Had dinner on board which turned out to be mediocre based our choice of fish and chips and a steak medium rare steak (costing abt stlg 10 per set) After dinner you can proceed to the lounge and watch some live sports telecast or have a beer which will cost stlg 2-5. Or pay Stlg 6 to see the latest movie release of the week Iron Man 3 or yiu can retire to your cabin. The sailing was very smooth and next morning you arrive at Hook at 730 am and walk to Hook station to catch train to Rotterdam Centreal anbd then anoteher change to go to Amsterdam Whilst an eurostar will take you about 5 hours from London to Amsterdam, this roundabout way saves monies and provide a good nite's sleep on comfy beds. We arrived on a Monday morning and did not face a sea of comuters. Using the sprint to Amsterdam would require an add fare of eur 10. Worthy alternate rail/sheep trip to Europe if you have time to spare .

i traveled to Rosslare to Fish Guard last Tuesday and had a fabolous time. the sea was calm and every on board was in great form. there was great facilities available to us on the boat with complimentary movies and food available. the return sailing on Saturday was nothing in comparison. unfortunately the sea was extremely rough ( not stena lines fault) and most people on the boat were either unwell or asleep. as it was the late sailing only the bar and grill was open which removed the luxurious aspect. i would recomend the day sailing to everyone but be aware of the boredom of the night sailing.

Not exactly a day trip - I travelled overnight in both directions from London to Harwich to the Hook of Holland with two hotel nights in Amsterdam. The train journey from Liverpool St to Harwich takes about ninety minutes but was fine. You can board the ferry a couple of hours before sailing which gives plenty of time for a good nights sleep. Both vessels the Hollandica and Britanica are new with plenty of facilities although I couldn't get the internet to work. I had a single cabin which I found comfortable and got a good nights sleep. I caught the 07:52 train from the Hook which takes half an hour to Rotterdam. I was able to board the ship three hours before departure coming back. Be warned if travelling into London you arrive in the morning rush hour. The advantage of travelling this way is that you save one nights hotel bill in the Netherlands (or London if travelling from the Continent) so it can be cost and time effective. My only criticism is that the jetty was not working at Harwich requiring us to be bussed from the freight deck which added a bit of stress. (I nearly left a bag on the bus, luckily a fellow traveller noticed.) Bridges break down but I understand that it has been out of service for several weeks which is not good. That said I would highly recommend considering travelling this way, particularly overnight as its comfortable, watching the ship dock & undock is interesting and you get a full day at the start and end of your journey.

Took the ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare. The train drops you right at the door. Check in was easy, and fast; excellent service. Free Internet while waiting and you can check in luggage. The whole process was terrific. The crossing takes three and a half hours. You can rent rooms for 28£ or go to the lounge for 18£(snacks, drinks, Internet...a quiet room) ship says you get Internet so I did neither...I might think differently next time. Had a walk outside and saw a family set up to have a picnic....the mom said the food on board is 'yuck'. The outside area smelt of tires...deck covered in flooring made old tires. Went to the Bar and Grill...had a beer and burger. Beer good, burger crap! Meat like substance...could not eat it. Saw many others throw much of their food out too. Thought about a coffee...one lady had one sip of her two coffee's and took them back. Chatted with other...no one impressed with either food or drink. Went and sat in very uncomfortable chairs trying to watch a movie on two large screens, poor quality presentation, althought, you could watch the little TV's. The ferry did leave and arrive on time...bring your on food! I booked on line costing $34 good deal; others paid $73 ...do your research!

Specifications of Stena Elektra ferry

  •   Review

Stena Elektra ferry Review

Review of stena elektra ferry.

MS Stena Elektra ferry is a Ro-Pax passenger vessel planned (currently under development) for the Sweden-based company STENA LINE . The ship has max passenger capacity 1000, freight capacity 3000 lanemetres (3x car decks for ~600 cars or ~170 freight vehicles/trailers/trucks-lorries). The unique vessel is the first of two (planned by STENA) and scheduled for launch and inauguration in 2027.

Stena Elektra - the first of two battery-powered ships to be built for STENA LINE - will be deployed year-round on the Sweden-Denmark ferry route Goteborg/Gothenburg - Frederikshavn . For this project (Port Gothenburg's Tranzero Initiative), STENA partnered with Port Goteborg, Volvo Group (1927-founded, Goteborg-headquartered Swedish vehicles and engines manufacturing company/trucks, buses, heavy equipment, engines) and with Scania AB (1911-founded Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles/heavy lorries, trucks, buses, diesel engines). The project aims to reduce Port Goteborg's carbon emissions by 70% by the year 2030.

Stena Elektra ferry ship (STENA LINE)

The Tranzero Initiative was officially announced during a press conference on February 4, 2021, by Niclas Martensson (STENA LINE's CEO). The shipbuilding order for the first of two units (Stena Elektra) will be placed in 2025. The ship design is expected to be finalized in 2022.

Since 2018, the upgraded as "battery hybrid" fleetmate Stena Jutlandica (1996-built) operates the Goteborg-Frederikshavn service using battery power only while in port - during maneuvering for berthing and undocking only. Jutlandica's batteries are berth-charged (at Port Gothenburg) with "green electricity" which annually saves ~1500 tonnes of CO2 (equal to ~600 cars emissions per year). By 2030, STENA plans to reduce CO2 emissions fleetwide by 40% (over 2008) and by 100% (zero emissions) by 2050.

The newbuild ferry Stena Elektra will be the world's first fully-electric / fossil fuel-free Ro-Pax vessel (wheeled cargo and passenger ship). What is officially revealed so far about the vessel's details is LOA length ~200 m (~655 ft), 3 large-capacity cargo decks, fore-located passenger facilities (restaurants, reserved seating lounge, staterooms), Navigation Bridge, top-deck Funnels (smokestacks) and Helipad (helicopter-landing platform used in cases of emergencies). The ship will be constructed from high-tensile/low-carbon steel (hull) and lightweight composite materials (superstructure) to lower the weight and increase energy efficiency.

The new ferry is designed to run only on battery power for ~50 NM/nautical miles (~93 km / 58 mi) - or the entire Goteborg-Frederikshavn sea distance. To achieve this, the vessel will be fitted with powerful battery pack (capacity ~70 MWh) and also with shoreside power capabilities allowing recharging while docked in both ports.

Stena Line is also investigating the possibility to combine the battery power with alternative fossil-free fuels (fuel cells, hydrogen, bio methanol) to give the ships a greater reach. The development of Stena Elektra ship was one of Stena Teknik's main projects in 2019. The subsidiary Stena Teknik is the company's technical division for marine-related businesses. Stena Teknik is pro-environmental and focused on climate-neutral shipping, vessel design optimizations and artificial intelligence/machine learning (route optimization) for both existing ferries and newbuilds, aiming to increase fuel efficiency and cargo capacity.

In 2019, Stena Teknik also assisted the development of TENA LINE's E-Flexer Class ferries (China-built) which are among the most energy-efficient passenger ships ever constructed. Stena's E-Flexer units consume ~1/4 less fuel in comparison to equivalent GT tonnage ships.

STENA issues e-tickets (not separate train tickets) and the passenger's self-printed e-ticket serves as a train ticket. Dutch Railways tickets (to and from the port) can't be included in the ferry booking. These e-tickets are not valid on private UK rail carriers. Intercity Direct and ICE trains are with extra charge.

Special meals (vegan, vegetarian, kosher, halal food, gluten- or lactose-free foods) can be pre-ordered on the UK-Holland route Harwich-Hook of Holland. All the ingredients used for these special meals are verified by their manufacturers. Vegetarian meals contain dairy products, eggs, vegetables. Muslim meals don't contain pork (or by-products) as well as food containing alcohol. Special food orders must be made 48 hours prior departure (via email upon booking or by calling +31 (0)174 - 315 811).

Hand luggage restrictions per person (carried in the ship's public areas) include max dimensions 60x50x40 cm and up to 12 kg. Foot passengers are allowed to bring only 2 pieces of extra luggage (up to 20 kg), checked-in on day voyages (unless there is a booked cabin). Car passengers must leave their luggage in the vehicle. Remember that car decks are closed during the voyage. Any extra baggage will be surcharged.

The company doesn't allow 36 weeks' pregnant women to travel, as well as 34 weeks pregnant when expecting more than one baby. Passengers with restricted mobility will be assisted prior departure and also onboard. Such passengers must contact the company's staff at least 48 hours prior to departure (via email or by calling +31 (0)174-315811). Wheelchair passengers must arrive at the port at least 2 hours prior to departure and go to the company's check-in desk.

Tickets with blank return date are not offered. However, it is possible to book "open ticket" with a temporary date, that can be changed later to the actual return date. STENA LINE's deals are categorized as "Economy", "Flexi" and "Premium". ECONOMY fares are always the cheapest, but with an amendment fee and without refund for changes and cancellations. FLEXI fares allow changes to be made to your booking at no cost. Passengers only pay the difference in fare, with the option of a full refund for canceling. PREMIUM fares (depending on routes) offer different bonus perks, such as express boarding and disembarkation, Stena Plus Lounge seats, included Breakfast. PREMIUM deals are not available on the routes Sassnitz-Rugen/Rostock-Trelleborg, Grenaa-Varberg, Nynashamn - Ventspils Latvia and Travemunde - Liepaja Latvia . PREMIUM fares on the route Hook of Holland-England (Harwich) are inclusive of Stena Plus Lounge seat and Breakfast (on night voyages only).

Pets on the ship

Pets (dogs, cats, and ferrets) can be ferried on all STENA ships, but some requirements depend on the itinerary (destination).

Pets are not allowed in passenger cabins unless the stateroom is "pet-friendly" (usually 2-bed dog's cabin). All ships have a dog toilet. At all times during the voyage, dogs must be leashed and muzzled, and never left alone. Guide dogs travel for free and are allowed on all passenger decks and in the owners' cabin (but must wear a harness or jacket).

On STENA ferries serving Scandinavian routes (Sweden-Norway-Latvia) are required valid EU pet passports with standard information about the animal's identity, vaccinations (other treatments). Pets also must have an approved microchip (or tattoo) and rabies vaccination by an authorized veterinarian. Pets traveling to Norway must be treated for tapeworm. Passengers with pets must arrive at the port at least 1-hour prior to departure.

On STENA ferries to England and Ireland, passengers with pets must arrive at the port at least 2 hours prior departure. For all other routes, this time is 1-1,5 hours. All animals are subject to the UK Pet Travel scheme rules and must be at least 15 weeks old. EU pet passports and microchips are required. Car passengers can ferry up to 5 animals (per vehicle). These cars receive a colored hanger (placed on the windscreen rear-view mirror until customs are cleared in each port). Pets in vehicles must remain inside at all times. Foot passengers are allowed up to 5 pets, but pre-booking an onboard kennel is required. Children traveling with an animal must be 16 years old. When traveling with 6 or more animals, they must be at least 6 months old.

All STENA ships have onboard kennels, including big (100x97x94 cm), medium-sized (100x64x108 cm) and small (100x65x50 cm). All cabins provide TV monitoring of the kennels. Visits of the pet during the voyage are recommended.

Stena Elektra has three cargo decks (Car Deck areas interconnected via ramps). The ship's machinery (engines, backup generators, fuel tanks) are in the hull, below Car Deck 1.

Follows a list of car decks related safety procedures:

  • Disabled passengers or those requiring specific assistance should visit the ship's Information Desk (open 24-hours).
  • Apply handbrake and place the vehicle in park or 1st gear position. Switch off the ignition, alarm, electrical equipment, headlights. Gas cylinders, if any, must be switched off. Lock the vehicle.
  • From your vehicle take only valuables and essential hand baggage.

  • Access to the ship's vehicle (cargo) decks during the voyage is prohibited.
  • Smoking on vehicle decks, as well as in cabins and passenger lounges is forbidden.
  • Wait for the onboard announcement before returning to your vehicle.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

stena line party cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

stena line party cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

stena line party cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

stena line party cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

stena line party cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

stena line party cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

stena line party cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Belfast Cruise Port Guide | 10 Best Things To Do In Port

Port of Belfast and the Titanic Museum

Welcome to Belfast cruise port, Northern Ireland’s capital and its largest city, one of the most popular stops in the British Isles cruise itineraries! Belfast Harbour lies on the banks of the River Lagan on the country’s east coast and is famous for being  the birthplace of the Titanic. The port of Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest cruise port and consists of three cruise terminals, located within a short drive from Belfast downtown. In this article, read about:

  • Belfast cruise port (Belfast cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)

Belfast Cruise Port

Port Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest cruise port and consists of three main docking locations: Stormont Wharf, Pollock Dock, and New Belfast Cruise Ship Terminal. See the Belfast cruise schedule

  • Stormont Wharf  is dedicated to larger cruise liners and is located on Stormont Road approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from the Belfast city center.
  • Pollock Dock can accommodate smaller cruise vessels and is located closer to the city center, around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the downtown.

These terminals have facilities that include basic passenger assistance, a tourist information center, a gift shop, and parking for taxis/tour buses.

Since 2019, there has been a new cruise terminal D3 ( Cruise Ship Terminal Belfast ) located on Airport Road on the outskirts of the harbour, close to the George Best Belfast City Airport, approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from the city center.

With its 340-meter-long quay, this terminal is designed to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships. When there are no passenger ships in port and off-season, this terminal is used for cargo and container ships. There is a small terminal building housing a tourist information center where you can get city maps and brochures. A taxi rank, tour buses, and parking are available outside the terminal.

Belfast cruise port map

The port of Belfast is also one of the largest ferry ports serving the routes to Douglas (Isle of Man), Liverpool (England), Birkenhead (England), Cairnryan (Scotland), and a few other ports depending on the season. The majority of ferries are operated by Stena Line, one of the largest ferry companies in the world.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Belfast city center is small and can be easily explored on foot.
  • The cruise lines normally offer a convenient shuttle service to the Belfast Welcome Center (visitor information centre) on Donegall Square North, located opposite the Belfast City Hall. Tickets should be purchased onboard the ship. A 5-minute walk from there is Victoria Square Shopping Centre, one of the best places for shopping in the city.
  • The taxi station is located next to the terminal building. A ride to Belfast city center takes 10 minutes.
  • As for public transport , it is available however I will not encourage you to use it as the buses don’t run very often and the closest stop is at the port gate, which is quite a fair walking distance from the dock.
  • Belfast’s main railway station is Lanyon Place Train Station (formerly Belfast Central), located near the city center, approximately a 10-minute drive from the cruise terminal. You’ll find the timetables and fares at https://www.translink.co.uk/
  • Hiring a bicycle is a fast and cheap way to get around the city since the city is not very big. Belfast Bikes rental has more than 40 pick-up and drop-off points throughout the city. You can rent them for the hour or the day.
  • If you want to go sightseeing, Belfast Hop on Hop off bus runs from City Hall and covers stops at the major city highlights including Titanic Dock and Visitor Center, St George’s Market, Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast Castle, and others. 10 Best Things to Do in Belfast Cruise Port

The neighborhoods of Belfast boast a rich cultural offer and the city’s turbulent and interesting history is displayed through its art and architecture.

1. Belfast City Hall

The imposing City Hall is perhaps the best-known and most representative building in the city. It was built in 1906 to celebrate the appointment of Belfast as a “City” by Queen Victoria in 1888.

Belfast City Hall offers free 1-hour public tours every day led by a knowledgeable guide who provides information on the history of Belfast City Hall and its finest features. Tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis and visitors must register 10-15 minutes before the tour. Guests with disabilities and limited mobility are welcome.

2. Saint Anne’s Cathedral (Belfast Cathedral)

One of Belfast’s most treasured buildings, a beautiful Romanesque cathedral was built in 1899. It boasts magnificent architecture, stone carvings, huge stained-glass windows depicting characters from the Old Testament, and a huge historic significance. The cathedral is located around a 10-minute walk north of the City Hall. It is fully wheelchair accessible.

3. Belfast Castle

Built in the late 12th century by the Normans, the castle was located within the city of Belfast, but after suffering a fire in 1708, only the names of some streets remained that indicate that it was there before. Instead of rebuilding it in the same place, its owners preferred to go to the outskirts of the city and built the new Belfast Castle on the slopes of Cavehill Country Park. The new castle was completed in 1870.

Today the magnificent castle is a private center where banquets, weddings, meetings, and other large events are held. On the castle’s grounds, you can find a beautiful garden and park, an adventure playground, a gift shop, a restaurant, and a visitor center.

The castle is located a 15-minute drive from the port Belfast. To get to Belfast Castle, you can take public bus #1 from Upper Queen Street (located one block away from the City Hall) to Newtownabbey Serpentine Road and from there you need to walk 10 minutes to Belfast Castle.

4. Titanic Museum

Located in the Titanic Quarter, the same place where the Titanic was built in 1912, this museum is one of the icons of Belfast and one of the main tourist attractions of the city. This gigantic museum opened its doors in 2012 and is completely dedicated to the history of the ship. In 2016, the museum was crowned the best world tourist attraction by the World Travel Awards.

The tour of the museum is an authentic experience that allows you to access over nine galleries where you get to learn about Titanic myths and reality, its launch, Maiden Voyage, and tragic destiny. Enjoy the exploration of the re-created cabins and decks, the Shipyard Ride, and the underwater exploration theater! Belfast Titanic Museum is fully wheelchair accessible.

Titanic Museum Belfast

The driving distance between any of the Belfast cruise terminals and the Titanic Museum is approximately 7 – 10 minutes. If you are coming from the city center to the museum, the distance is approximately 2 miles and takes about 25 minutes on foot.

You can also take bus #94 from Wellington Place in the city center to Odyssey Pavilion, and then a 10-minute walk to the Titanic Museum. It is strongly recommended to purchase tickets in advance as you need to select specific times for the visit.

5. Belfast Mural Tour

If you are visiting Belfast, don’t miss the opportunity to visit its famous murals. These mainly represent the history of Northern Ireland during the last decades of the 20th century, a period known as “The Troubles”, one of the most tragic periods in European history at the turn of the century.

The tradition of political murals in Belfast dates back to 1908 when images of King William III began to be painted. This king is highly acclaimed by Protestants due to his victory over the Catholics at the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The murals were not usually permanent and they changed over time, reflecting the political problems of the moment. This is still the case today.

There are about 2000 murals scattered throughout Belfast, but it is in the Falls and Shankill neighborhoods that the most famous are found.

You can tour the murals on foot, but you will need time and desire to walk since the murals are separated from each other. Hiring a taxi is probably the most comfortable and quickest way to do it. A local taxi driver will take you around the main points of these neighborhoods and explain to you the symbols of the murals and what the different murals represent. The Belfast Hop on Hop off buses also stop at some areas where these famous murals are located.

6. St George’s Market

If your ship docks in Belfast on the weekend, then this is the place to visit if you want to enjoy local cuisine and crafts. Among the stalls of this colorful 19th-century indoor market, you can find practically everything – from fresh fruit and fish to antique items, handmade gifts, and original works by local artists.

The market has numerous places where you can enjoy delicious street food, fresh smoothies, local sweets and so much more. On Sundays, they have live music by local bands. St George’s Market is located in the heart of the city, less than a 10-minute walk from the City Hall and the shuttle bus drop-off point. Hop on Hop off buses also stops at the market.

7. Botanic Gardens

The elaborate public garden was born as a private Royal Belfast Botanical Garden in 1828 and was opened to the public in 1895. It covers 28 acres, and its main feature is an elegant domed conservatory known as “The Palm House”, a greenhouse that can be visited and where you can see various types of tropical plants.

The Botanical Gardens is located around 1.2 miles away from the city center and its City Hall, approximately 25 minutes on foot. A taxi ride from City Hall lasts 5 minutes. Gardens are wheelchair accessible and there are benches all around for visitors will walking difficulties.

Check out Belfast Botanic Gardens tours and activities

Belfast Botanical Gardens

8. The Ulster Museum

Situated in the same park as the Botanical Gardens, the Ulster Museum is the largest in Northern Ireland featuring rich collections of art, archeological findings, scientific artifacts, and the treasures of the Spanish Invincible Armada.

Here, visitors can explore 9000 years of Irish culture and history and learn about its turbulent history, traditions and ethnography. Within the museum, there are also zoological, geological, and botanical collections. The entrance is free of charge and provides easy access and exploration for wheelchair users.

9. Giant’s Causeway

You cannot leave Northern Ireland without having visited this natural wonder and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.

According to the legend, the origin of the Giant’s Causeway is due to two giants, an Irish one named Finn MacCool and a Scottish giant named Bennandoner. They fought each other throwing stones until so many of them were thrown that they formed a path between Ireland and the island of Staffa. Bennandoner crossed it intending to kill Finn, but his wife had the idea of dressing him as a baby. So when Bennandoner arrived and saw such a big baby, he imagined that the baby’s father would be much bigger, so he ran back stomping so hard that he destroyed the stone path they had created leaving only what we can see today.

Giant's Causeway Northern Island

Declared a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO and a national nature reserve, Giant’s Causeway is one of the strangest geological phenomena on the planet and a unique landscape that you cannot miss. There are two ways to experience the Giant’s Causeway: visit the stones or take a stunning 5-mile (2.5 hours) hike along the thrilling clifftop path.

Clifftop Experience Walk departs from the ruins of Dunseverick Castle along the coastline to the Giant’s Causeway. This experience is recommended for visitors in good health conditions and fitness levels. Wear non-slippery shoes and bring a light jacket .

How to Get to Giant’s Causeway from Belfast Cruise Port?

  • Distance from the port of Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway is approximately 62 miles (100 km), about a 1h 30-minute drive each way. The best way to get there is definitely on an organized shore excursion considering the distance and your time in port. I strongly suggest you book this tour in advance because it sells out quickly.
  • If you decide to get there on your own, will need to take train 3 from Lanyon Place train station to Coleraine train station, and then hop on bus 402 or 172 to Giant’s Causeway. The journey by train itself takes 1.5 hours, but overall (with a bus and a walking portion included), it can take up to 3 hours each way. Therefore, it’s not recommended for cruise passengers.
  • You can also hire a taxi from the port of Belfast, or book a private round-trip transfer which might be a cheaper option.

10. The Crown Liquor Saloon

This gastropub is one of the oldest pubs in Belfast and is worth stopping by for a pint or a succulent meal. The building was built in the Victorian style and is known for its rustic wooden interior decoration featuring carved mahogany booths, etched glass, and gas lamps from the 1800s. It is the most famous pub in Belfast and today it has become one of the symbols of the city because it’s the only pub in the country to be declared a national monument. The pub is located in the heart of the city, only 5 minutes walking distance from the City Hall.

Ferry operator Stena Line is to expand its operations outside of Europe by acquiring a 49 per cent share in Morocco-based ferry company Africa Morocco Link (AML).

AML, which is headquartered in Tangier, operates a freight ferry route between Tanger Med in Morocco to Algeciras in southern Spain. This summer, the company is to launch a new high-speed passenger and car ferry service between Tangier Ville in Morocco and Tarifa, on the southernmost end of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain.

“We are always looking to secure new business opportunities that will make us resilient in the long run,” said Niclas Mårtensson, CEO at Stena Line, which currently operates 26,000 sailings on European routes each year. “The strait of Gibraltar is a strategic location for passengers travelling between Africa and Europe as well as for global trade, and freight volumes in the area are expected to grow in the upcoming years due to the positive industrial growth and international trade in Morocco. These routes, their ports and the surrounding industries are under development and expected to drive healthy freight market growth in the coming 10 years. It’s a very exciting area to be able to operate in.”

The agreement between the two companies is subject to approval by the Moroccan authorities.
