Alpine sensation

A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250 metre long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. Not only because of the frosty temperatures, but also because of the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. 30 memorial tablets bear witness to this. The music on the way also gives you goosebumps: It brings back to life the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Even if visitors are more comfortable today than the miners were – they feel relieved when, at the end of the experience, they can pose in front of the giant snow globe and say: I made it!

Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch tour - unforgettable day trip in the Swiss Alps

With so many well-known mountain destinations in Switzerland, it might be difficult to choose where to go in the Swiss Alps. If you have time and money, you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one place.

However, if you visit just one or two places in the Swiss mountains, then I really think that Jungfraujoch Top of Europe should be one of them. It will be the highlight of your trip to Switzerland. Find out!

What is Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is a unique year-round mountain destination in Switzerland. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage site called Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch .

Jungfraujoch also referred to as Top of Europe , is a place where the highest railway station in Europe (3,454 m) is located.

With an elevation of 3,466 m, this is the lowest pass between two four-thousander mountains – Jungfrau and Mönch. It is therefore called the Jungfrau saddle (literal translation of the word Jungfraujoch).

Some people also call Jungfraujoch the Top of the World in Switzerland. And when you stand there, high above the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps, it sure feels like you are at the top of the world!

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe - one of the best places to visit in the Swiss Alps

Jungfraujoch history

It’s hard to imagine that the idea to build a railway to a glacier at over 3,5km (over 11,600 ft) height dates from the 19th century. Even today, it would be a huge challenge!

A Swiss entrepreneur Adolf Guyer- Zeller came up with a crazy idea to build a tunnel and a railway line to the rocky summit of Sphinx (now an observation deck at Jungfraujoch). Construction started in 1896, took 16 years to complete, and due to various reasons stopped a bit lower. The man behind the project died before it was completed…

The Jungfrau railway line is a significant achievement and even now, more than 100 years later, it still holds the title of the highest railway station in Europe.

Jungfraujoch Alpine Sensation experience is not to be missed when visiting Top of Europe in Switzerland

Where is Jungfraujoch, map & how to get there

It takes quite some time to reach Jungfraujoch. It’s a 2.5 hours train journey from Interlaken, 1.5 hours from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, or 1 hour from Wengen.

The only way to get to Jungfraujoch is by train . The last place where you can leave your car is Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, from where you have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg. You have to switch trains at Kleine Scheidegg, where you hop on the luxury Jungfraujoch Railway train for the last part of the journey.

You can visit Jungfraujoch on your own – just make sure to book a train ticket in advance , especially if visiting in the high season. Alternatively, you can join an organized excursion to Jungfrau from a variety of cities in Switzerland (see below).

Update: The new Eiger Express tri-cable gondola from Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier station is now the fastest way to get to Jungfraujoch. Once in Eiger, you have to take the train for the last section to Jungfraujoch. This journey takes less time than by train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and from there to Jungfraujoch.

This is also one of the cheapest ways to get to Jungfraujoch. You can also opt to take the gondola up and the train back down via Kleine Scheidegg, so you can enjoy different scenery on your way up and down. Keep in mind that the gondola can get closed in case of very strong winds; for that, the train remains the best year-round option.

TIP: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , you can get a discount on Jungfraujoch tickets. Alternatively, for children from 6 and under 16, you can also get a Junior Travel Card at any major train station in Switzerland – it will save you a fortune when exploring the country.

Good to know: Because groups get big discounts, it might be cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch with a tour than on your own , especially if you are traveling here from one of the bigger cities and are not staying in the area. Here are the most popular options for organized Jungfraujoch tours :

  • Jungfraujoch from Zurich .
  • Jungfraujoch from Lucerne .
  • Jungfraujoch from Interlaken .

For more practical tips for your visit to Jungfraujoch, please check our practical information section at the end of the article.

What to do at Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is so much more than the highest train station in Europe! In fact, it’s more than any other mountain destination we have visited so far. There is so much to see and do at Jungfraujoch that you can easily make a day trip of it, one of the best day trips in the Swiss Alps!

There is a wide range of activities at Jungfraujoch. Some activities like hiking or skiing and sledding at the Snow Fun park are seasonal (summer only), most others are available the whole year-round. Below is a short overview of everything that you can see and do at Jungfraujoch . Read on!

Things to do at Jungfraujoch:

1. Sphinx Observation Deck & Aletsch Glacier

The Sphinx Observatory is an astronomical observatory at Jungfraujoch, an international research station. Sphinx is one of the highest observatories in the world. It’s not accessible to the public, but you can visit the open viewing deck, called the Sphinx observation deck.

The view over the sea of snow of the Aletsch glacier from the Sphinx observatory is second to none. It is hard to imagine that this 22 km long glacier is almost a kilometer thick. Can you imagine that much ice?!

If you come here on a clear day (or if you find yourself above the clouds), seeing the Aletsch Glacier is one of the best experiences, a must do at Jungfraujoch.

To get to the Sphinx observation deck, you’ll need to take a really fast elevator. It ascends 108m in just 25 seconds.

You wouldn’t believe it, but even at this height, there are some birds living at Jungfraujoch. Yes, even in winter when temperatures of -20°C (-4F) aren’t uncommon, you are likely to run into some birds here. Unbelievable!

2. Ice Palace

If you want to get up close and personal with the glacier, then don’t miss the Ice Palace , probably the most impressive of all Jungfraujoch attractions.

Walking in an ice tunnel under a glacier is something that is always exciting. No matter how many times you’ve done it, it just takes your breath away.

There are all kinds of ice sculptures at the Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch. You never know what you’ll find, because they change exposition quite often. We saw eagles, bears, and the kids also found Scrat from Ice Age stuck inside the ice… They didn’t stop talking about it for days…

3. Alpine Sensation

Alpine Sensation is a 250m-long corridor that connects the Sphinx Hall with the Ice Palace. It’s a tribute to the miners who built the railway and the history of this unique place.

It’s a beautifully done, multimedia-staged trip back in time and a truly touching experience.

Our kids were fascinated by a giant snowball with a miniature world inside of it. They could have watched it for hours…

4. Jungfrau Panorama

Jungfrau Panorama film is a fascinating experience that shows you a 360° panorama of the surrounding area.

So even if you visit Jungfraujoch on a less beautiful day, when mountains are covered in clouds, this unique virtual experience lets you admire the magnificent panorama.

It takes just a few minutes and is included with any Jungfraujoch ticket.

Jungfrau Panorama 360° cinema experience at Jungfraujoch Top of Europe

5. Glacier Plateau

Glacier Plateau is an extremely popular photo stop at Jungfraujoch.

Not only do you have guaranteed snow and ice 365 days a year, but it also offers an amazing view over the nearby Jungfrau and Silberhorn mountain peaks.

Even if you visit Jungfraujoch in the summer, you’ll find snow here. So if you want to get outside and walk around on the snow, this is the place to be.

View over Jungfrau mountain from the Glacier Plateau at Jungfraujoch Top of Europe in Switzerland

6. Snow Fun Park

Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch is only open outside the ski season (mid-May to mid-October). If you come to Jungfrau in winter, there are plenty of ski slopes and sledding runs in the area. But if you visit this beautiful region in summer, you can experience the snow at the Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch.

Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snow tubing are available. More adventurous can also try the Flying Fox. Ziplining above the glacier – how (literally) cool is that?!

Keep in mind that Snow Park requires a separate ticket and – unlike most other experiences at Jungfraujoch – is not included with the railway ticket.

Single tickets are quite expensive, so I recommend getting a day ticket that includes all activities and the hire of the necessary equipment ( more info here ). Make sure to come early and you can spend the whole fun day at Jungfraujoch!

7. Mönchsjochhütte

If you visit Jungfraujoch in summer, in addition to all of the above, you can also hike to Switzerland’s highest serviced mountain hut, Mönchsjochhütte (Mönchsjoch Hut).

It is accessible from the Jungfraujoch on a marked footpath through the glacier and takes about 45 minutes one way.

Make sure you wear good hiking boots if you plan to go hiking here. Oh, and make sure to always stay on the marked paths. Wandering onto a glacier without an experienced local guide is very dangerous!

Usually, Mönchsjochhütte is open from +- mid-March to mid-October.

8. Lindt Swiss chocolate experience

You can’t visit any place in Switzerland and not try some Swiss chocolate. Jungfraujoch is no exception.

Lindt Chocolate Heaven is much more than just a chocolate shop. Combining the old-fashioned chocolate-making process with interactive displays, it’s a really fun place to see when visiting Top of Europe.

Don’t forget to treat yourself to some delicious Lindt chocolate – it melts in your mouth!

Lindt chocolate experience is just one of the many things to do at Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

9. Restaurants and shops

Since you will probably spend the whole day at Jungfraujoch, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of nice restaurants and shops on top. You can find everything from Swiss chocolate to traditional souvenirs, Swiss knives, and even clothes at one of the Jungfraujoch shops.

There is a self-service restaurant and also an a-la-carte restaurant with amazing glacier views. We had lunch at the Crystal Restaurant and found that the food was actually very reasonably priced for Swiss standards (and the portions were huge).

Dining high above the clouds and with a view like that is an unforgettable experience!

How expensive are Jungfraujoch tickets?

Jungfraujoch tickets are very expensive and prices depend on the season and on the train station from/to where you are traveling. In the high season, a regular ticket from a train station nearby will cost you around 250 CHF (about 260 EUR or 280 USD).

If you want to find out the exact price for your journey, you can check the price brochure here . Alternatively, you can easily see the most up-to-date prices in your own currency and book your tickets here .

This is the most popular ticket . It includes the train from Interlaken all the way to Jungfraujoch. During the booking process, you can choose whether you travel to the top via Lauterbrunnen or via Grindelwald.

Good to know. Kids under 6 and with Junior Travel Card travel free of charge and children under 16 pay half the price. As already mentioned, you also get discounts with the Swiss Pass .

Is Jungfraujoch worth the money?

Just like many people, you are probably also wondering if  it’s worth the money to visit Jungfraujoch? Also because there are so many places to include in your Swiss trip itinerary and limited time to see everything you want… I was asking myself the same thing before we visited.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is expensive, very expensive, but you probably already know that nothing is cheap in Switzerland. Also, all the activities I mentioned above (except for Snow Fun Park) are included in the ticket price . Just try to imagine how much it costs to build and run a place like this…

We have visited many places in Switzerland over the years and to us, Jungfraujoch is one of the most unique places and experiences in the Swiss Alps . So my answer is YES – if you can afford it and have time, Jungfraujoch is absolutely worth the money .

If, however, you still have a long list of places to visit in Switzerland, or have a tighter budget, there are also so many other beautiful destinations to visit that don’t cost half as much. So it really depends on what you compare it to.

If you only have a day in the region and your budget is tight, head to Grindelwald-First instead. Other nice options are Schynige Platte , Mürren. Also Mount Titlis or Mt Pilatus near Lucerne are nice alternatives. All these are much cheaper than Jungfraujoch.

How to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper

Here are some ways to visit Jungfraujoch cheaper:

1. Get a regional pass. If you are staying in the area for a longer time and get the Jungfrau Region Winter Sportpass pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass (only available in summer) for at least 3 days, you can get a ticket to Jungfraujoch at a seriously reduced rate (about 1/3rd of the price). In addition, this pass also gives you a 10% discount at the shops at Jungfraujoch.

We visited Jungfraujoch when we were skiing in Wengen . Because we had a ski pass for the area, we only had to get an extra ticket for the last part of the journey – from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, which was about 1/3rd the price of the regular ticket.

2. Go in a lower season. It is about 25 CHF cheaper to visit Jungfraujoch in the winter or in the shoulder season compared to summer. The peak season is from June to August.

3. Get a Swiss Pass. If you have the Swiss Pass , you can travel for free to Grindelwald or Wengen and get a 25% discount for the journey from there to Jungfraujoch.

4. Go with a group of friends. If you travel with a group of 10 people, you can get a group discount which is about 30%.

5. Go with a tour. If you book an organized tour to Jungfraujoch from bigger cities, it’s often cheaper than going on your own. This is because they take advantage of group rates.

6. Take a cable car. If you book a ticket by cable car + train rather than by train both ways, it’s sometimes a little bit cheaper that way.

Practical information and tips for visiting Jungfraujoch

  • Jungfraujoch Top of Europe can be visited the whole year round. It’s open 365 days a year .
  • Count one full day for your visit to Jungfraujoch . If you have some time left, you can hop off the train in Wengen and visit this picturesque mountain village. Also Kleine Scheidegg is a beautiful place for a short walk.
  • Leave your car in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen and take the train from there.
  • Reserve your Jungfraujoch railway tickets in advance . It’s a must if traveling in summer, but also in other seasons, it will save you lots of hassle. You can buy Jungfraujoch tickets here .
  • If you rather travel with a local guide (we had one and learned so much from her), here you can find and book guided day tours to Jungfraujoch .
  • Even in summer, you need warm clothes when visiting Jungfraujoch. Expect to find snow at the top.
  • Don’t stress about the weather – there’s plenty to see and do at Jungfraujoch in any type of weather. Sometimes it can be cloudy in the valley, but once you get there, you’ll find yourself above the clouds. And sometimes you just have to wait 10 minutes and the weather changes.

Where to stay near Jungfraujoch

You can visit Jungfraujoch as a day trip from many major cities in Switzerland, so you don’t absolutely have to stay nearby. However, there is so much more to see and do in this region, that it’s definitely worth planning a few days here.

The closest hotel to Jungfraujoch is   Hotel Bellevue des Alpes  at Kleine Scheidegg. However, it’s located high on the mountain, is very expensive, and there’s not that much that you can do there…

We always stay in Wengen , which is a car-free village with direct train connections to Kleine Scheidegg, from where you take the train to Jungfraujoch. Alternatively, there are lots of accommodations in Grindelwald , just on the other side of the mountains, and also with a direct train connection to Kleine Scheidegg and cable car to Eiger Glacier.

Most international tourists who come to the region for Jungfraujoch and the Grindelwald-First area, stay in Grindelwald. Here are a few hotel recommendations in Grindelwald town center for different budgets:

$$$$$ Bergwelt Grindelwald – Alpine Design Resort $$$$ Eiger Selfness Hotel $$$ Sunstar Hotel & SPA $$ Eiger Lodge Chic

TIP: Using the map below, you can compare hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rental accommodations in Grindelwald . Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll see what’s available for your stay. Check it out!

Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe, is such a special place that I really think it deserves to be included in any Swiss itinerary. It’s not just the highlight of the Jungfrau Region, but also one of the most unique places you can visit in Switzerland .

As for us, we have been to the Jungfrau Region many times and have just booked another trip for the summer. It’s a place you’ll want to return to as well!

TIP: If you like places like Jungfraujoch, you’ll also love Mount Titlis . It’s another wonderful day-trip destination in central Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch FAQ

Jungfrau is a mountain (4,158 m) whereas Jungfraujoch is Europe’s highest train station (3,454 m). Jungfraujoch means the “Jungfrau saddle”, which is basically the connecting point between the peaks of Mt Jungfrau and Mt Mönch. You can easily visit Jungfraujoch from where you can admire – among others – the view of Jungfrau.

Visiting Jungfraujoch is very expensive and many people wonder if it’s worth going there. Jungfraujoch offers one of the most unique experiences in the Swiss Alps, so yes, if you can afford it, it is absolutely worth a visit. If, however, you are on a tight budget, there are many cheaper destinations like Grindelwald-First, Schynige Platte, or Mount Titlis (to name just a few) that are worth your time just as much.

Jungfraujoch is the highest train station in Europe. Building and maintaining a railway this high in the mountains (where there is always snow) is very costly. Furthermore, there are just that many trains that can drive to Jungfraujoch in a day, which limits the number of visitors. All this makes it a more expensive destination.

Jungfraujoch is a year round destination and it’s open every day.

Jungfraujoch has something unique to offer in all seasons and since many attractions are inside, so you can visit at any time. There is always snow here, but if you visit in summer, you can hike to Mönchshütte or go snow tubing on the glacier. In addition, there are nice hiking possibilities in the area. So there’s more to see and do in Jungfraujoch in summer than in winter.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is only worth it if you are staying in the Jungfrau Region for at least 3 days and are planning to take trains/ gondolas every day. In that case, it’s absolutely worth it! Not only will it save you money for transportation, but it also gives you complete flexibility – you can easily change your travel plans during the day because all the trains and gondolas in the region are included.

I will be staying in Lauterbrunnen at the end of May. Is it possible to buy a ticket which gives you a choice of how to get up and down the Jungfraujoch i.e Eiger Express/train for the ascent and just the train for the descent to Kleine Scheidegg and then on to Wengen so that I can walk back to Lauterbrunnen?

Is there also a gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald?

Hi, a few things: Lauterbrunnen doesn't have any gondolas to that side of the mountain, only toward Mürren. If you want to go to Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, you'll have to take a train to Kleine Scheidegg and from there switch to another train to the Top of Europe. If you want to go to Grindelwald from Lauterbrunnen, the fastest way is by train via Zweilütschinen. Otherwise, via Kleine Scheidegg which is more scenic but also a lot more expensive. Eiger Gondola runs from Grindelwald, so if you want to take it either way, you will have to travel via Grindelwald at least one way. Just to be clear - if you just want to visit Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen, the easiest way is to simply take a train via Kleine Scheidegg and forget Grindelwald altogether. Unless you absolutely want to see the scenery there. Or you can simply visit Grindelwald separately, on another day if you are in the area longer. You can find all ticket options on the website of the Jungfrau Region but I can imagine that it can be very overwhelming. If you want to take many different trains in this area in a short time, it's often better to get a (multi-)day pass. If you just want a very specific ticket excluding some parts of the journey, simply ask at the ticket desk, but often, skipping one short part of the journey and doing it on foot will not be cheaper than paying for a round-trip ticket. You can still hike as much as you like though ;). Hope this helps a bit. In reality, it's not as complicated as it looks, but you need to decide which way you travel - the shortest route which is just up and down the same way, or the 'see everything' route which is basically a round trip via Grindelwald, going up to the mountain one way and coming back via the other side. Have a great trip!

Thursday 25th of January 2024

We plan to stay at Grindelwald for three nights. Of course, we want to visit Jungfraujoch. Is the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass better in price? We'll be there in the end of May.

Monday 29th of January 2024

Hi Julia, which pass or ticket is best for you depends on your travel plans - which trains/gondolas/boats you take, which mountain destinations you visit, etc. So I really can't compare it for you. Keep in mind that the last part of the journey to the top of Jungfraujoch (from Schynige Platte or Eiger gondola) is normally not included in any of the passes, but some passes give you a discount on it.

Sunday 26th of November 2023

Good day Jurga, happy to meet you and thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I and my husband will be arriving in Switzerland in beginning of Dec as per itinerary below, still thinking what category of Swiss Pass (SP) should I purchase. I am not going for skiing but would spend more time at scenic places and enjoy the views.

Day1: Frankfurt (Eurail ticket to Lucerne?) Day2: Lucerne : city sightseeing & Mt Rigi Day3-6: Grindelwald Town (stay here on day 3-6), Jungfraudjoch (1 day), Interlaken, Lauterbrunen, Murren, Wengen ...have more time to explore any more places? Day 6-8: Zermatt Day 9: Glacier Express (reservation seat paid), from Zermatt to Chur Day 10: Black Forest Day 11: Frankfurt

Would like to know which category of SP covers Jungfraudjoch and Glacier Express seat tickets. Appreciate your advice.

Regards Janice

Hi Janice, you may want to read our guide on Swiss Travel Pass for more information on what's included and what's not. In any case, the last leg of the train journey to Jungfraujoch is never included and gondolas/trains to most other mountain peaks (e.g. Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt or Grindelwald-First) are not included either, but you get a discount. Glacier Express is included, but you have to reserve the seats at an extra cost (which you seem to have done). Also, there is no difference in what's included with whatever Swiss Travel Pass you get - the main difference is the travel class and flexibility in terms or travel dates. Once again, please check the article I linked to for more information. Have a great trip!

Tuesday 31st of October 2023

Hi Jurga, i'm so glad i came across your post, very informative and interesting. I will be traveling with family to Switzerland in December 2023, sadly to say we will have a very short stay in the country for this trip. Our itinerary are as follows: Day 1 Arrival Zurich Day 2 Zurich to Grindelwald (overnight at Grindelwald) Day 3 From Grindelwald to Geneva Day 4 Geneva to Milan Our main purpose to Grindelwald is to visit Jungfraujoh and plan to go up Top Of Europe on day 3 before leaving for Geneva. Please advise: 1) Is it worth to buy Swiss Travel Pass ? should the pass be for 3 or 4 days? or a half price pass is a better option? 2) Does the STP covers train from Zurich-->Grindelwald-->Geneva-->Milan?

Friday 3rd of November 2023

Hi Evelyn, please take a look at our guide to Swiss Pass for more information about what's covered or not. Whether it's worth it, it depends on so many factors. With such a short trip it may not always be the case, but if you want to be 100% sure, the only way to check is to calculate the prices of everything you plan to do and then compare. If you have no time for this calculation, just get the pass for 3 days - normally, it should be worth it. And no, Swiss Pass will normally only cover train journeys within Switzerland so not all the way to Milan. Have a great trip!

Thursday 21st of September 2023

Hi! I will be staying near Interlaken ost, I'm wondering if it's possible to go to Grindelwald and enjoy some activities before going up to Jungfrau, or the whole trip up and down to Jungfrau would pretty much take up the whole day and it's best to just go up again to Grindelwald on another day?

Friday 22nd of September 2023

@Jurga, Thank you for taking time to answer. I appreciate your blogs, big help for new and old travellers alike. Keep it up and more power to your page. 😉

Hi Camille, it depends on what you want to do in Grindelwald. If it's just visiting the town and the sights in the valley, then you can easily combine it with Jungfraujoch. If you also want to visit Gridelwald-First, then it will be rushed and you'll need two separate tickets for each mountain peak, but won't be able to make the most of any of them.

Wondering what to expect when visiting Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe? Home to the highest train station in Europe, the largest glacier in the Alps, and incredible mountain views, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is an excursion in Switzerland that is not to be missed. It is truly one of the most beautiful places in the Swiss Alps. When the weather is clear, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is spectacular. We had a picture-perfect day visiting this famous European peak and we want to share exactly what you can look forward to when you visit this gorgeous viewpoint.

All About Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe in Switzerland

About Jungfraujoch top of Europe

Jungfraujoch is located in the region of Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Alps. With an elevation of 3454 meters (11,332 feet), you are going to feel the effects of altitude once you step off the highest cogwheel train in the world. So if you are sensitive to altitude, take your time as you explore, some people were feeling a wee bit dizzy at this elevation.

Here’s an interesting tidbit for you: Contrary to popular belief, when you visit Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, you are not actually going to the top of Jungfrau Mountain, you are going to a viewpoint that is known as a Joch. “Joch” in German is translated to Yolk in English, meaning you are basically wedged in the low end of a saddle between two mountain peaks, Jungfrau and Mönch. Trust me, you would rather be in the Joch than at the top of the mountain, the views from here are astounding.

How to Get to Jungfraujoch

How to get to Jungfraujoch top of Europe

To get to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, you need to make your way to Grindelwald Terminal in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland . The best way to get around Switzerland is by train. You can purchase a Swiss Travel Pass which will make it easy to get around anywhere in Switzerland by train.

  • Unlimited travel by  train, bus,  and boat
  • Public transportation in more than 90 cities and towns
  • Including mountain excursions: Rigi, Schilthorn, Stanserhorn, and Stoos
  • Free admission  to more than  500 museums  throughout Switzerland
  • Get your Swiss Travel Pass Here.
  • Two free informative apps to help plan your Switzerland journey are:  Grand Train Tour of Switzerland app  and the  Swiss Travel Guide app

You can purchase tickets from Grindelwald or Interlaken to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe in advance at Jungfrau Railways. We highly recommend a Top of Europe Pass to allow flexibility for the weather. Passes start at 3 days for 239 CHF ($260 USD)

We have broken down the exact route we took from Grindelwald Station in Grindelwald Village all the way to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe below.

Train to Grindelwald Terminal

Train to Grindelwald Station and the Top of Europe

There are two ways to get to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Train only or via the new Eiger Express. The Eiger Express is a state-of-the-art gondola that shaves 42 minutes off the journey. We took the Eiger Express and it was awesome. Depending on where you are staying, you will hop on the Bernese Oberland Railway to Grindelwald Terminal. Once you reach Grindelwald Terminal, you walk through the brand new facility that feels more like an airport than a ski area. With moving sidewalks, boutiques, and restaurants, it has everything you need. But you aren’t going to spend too long here, because you are going to the top of Europe baby!

Eiger Express to Eiger Station (Eigergletscher)

Eiger Express Jungfraujoch top of Europe

The Eiger Express is the most modern tri-cable gondola in the world. This new gondola was built with little impact on the environment using only seven towers spanning 6483 meters. Plus, it is massive, the Eiger Express can hold up to 26 passengers per gondola moving a lot of people at a time. The windows heat up keeping the views clear in winter and it moves fast. The Eiger Express takes you from Grindelwald Terminal to the Eiger Glacier station in just 15 minutes.By taking the Eiger Express, you shave off 42 minutes of travel time and transfers making the journey an easy straight shot to Jungfraujoch with only one transfer to the highest railway in Europe.

Jungfraubahn – Jungfrau Railway

Jungfrau Railway Jungfraujoch top of Europe

Once you reach Eiger Glacier Station (Eigergletscher) this when things get really interesting. From here, you transfer from the gondola to Jungfraubahn (The Jungfrau Railway) all the way up to Jungfraujoch. This historic cogwheel train is the highest cogwheel train in Europe. Not only that, it travels right through the Eiger and Mönch Mountains via a 7km long tunnel. It is steep and a very cool experience. There is also a little multimedia show to keep you occupied while you travel up for about 30 minutes.

Eismeer Sea of Ice

Eismeer Sea of Ice Jungfraujoch top of Europe

The Jungfrau Railway was completed in 1912 and is truly a feat of engineering. Imagine building a tunnel going through mountains at high altitudes more than 100 years ago! During the train journey, there is a stop in the middle of the mountain where you can get out of the train for views of the Aletsch Glacier. The Aletsch Glacier is an 80 square km ice sheet that is 22 km long and 1 km thick, making it the most powerful ice stream in the Alps. From here, you have a close-up view of Eismeer (“Sea of Ice”) of this mighty glacier. But the stop isn’t long because you are about to have your mind blown.

What to do at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

Sphinx Terrace

Sphinx Terrace Jungfraujoch top of Europe

Once you disembark the train, there is one more journey to take before you start exploring. It’s time to board the ultra-fast elevator that takes you up another 117 meters to your destination, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. It is here that you are free to explore all the panoramic views from The Spinx Observation Terrace. Take your time here as you have extraordinary views of Jungfrau and Mönch peaks. You can also see the Eiger from here as well as the Aletsch Glacier.

Alpine Cough Birds

Keep an eye out for the Alpine chough birds that soar through the air. These birds can only survive at altitudes of over 3000 meters. It is here that you are standing on the famous domed research station that you see in all the arial views of Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Note, drones are not allowed to be flown at this UNESCO World Heritage Site so leave that view to the helicopter tour or the professionals that have a permit.

Alpine Sensation

Alpine Sensation Jungfraujoch top of Europe

The journey continues through Alpine Sensation, a multi-media display showcasing the building of the Jungfrau Railway. As you enter, a giant snow globe welcomes you with scenes from Switzerland. It is in Alpine Sensation that you’ll learn of Adolf Guyer-Zeller, the creator of the Jungfrau Railway who had a vision of taking tourists to the top of the mountain via train. He never lived to see its completion but his legacy lives on.

Alpine sensation at the Top of Europe display

As you ride the moving sidewalk you pass photographs taking you on a journey from the early days of the building of the railway to the hardships that the construction crews faced. It also pays tribute to the 30 men who were killed building the railway.

Ice Palace Jungfraujoch top of Europe

We had seen pictures of the Ice Palace located at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, and expected a cheesy exhibit for kids. Boy, were we wrong! This glacier tunnel was dug in the 1930s with good old-fashioned chisels and hammers. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that we were walking under a glacier. I kept asking our guide Doris, “Are we under the glacier right now?” The long tunnel of ice is extraordinary.

Ice Sculpture in Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch top of Europe

There are ice sculptures scattered throughout the 1000 square meters of tunnels that weave under the Aletsch Glacier. From a Charley Chaplin ice carving exhibit (Charley resided in Switzerland after being exiled from the United States) to mountain animals, the ice carvings are works of art.

Glacier Plateau

Glacier Plateau Jungfraujoch top of Europe

It’s time to head outside to walk in the snow. It may be summer below in Grindelwald, but it is year-round winter up here at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. This viewpoint offers the best views of the mountains of Germany and France and on the other side an unobstructed view of the Aletsch Glacier.

View at Glacier Plateau

There’s also a photo opportunity to hold the Swiss Flag as you stand at the top of Europe. We liked to pretend we had just summited a mountain holding the flag, however, it was the easiest ascent we’ve ever had in our lives with gondolas, trains, and elevators taking us to this phenomenal viewpoint. It’s worth the shot though to say you’ve been there, done that.

Hike to Mönchsjoch Hut

Hike to Monchjoch hut Jungfraujoch top of Europe

We didnt’ have time to do a glacier hike, but we did get to see groups hiking to Mönchsjoch Hut. Imagine hiking at an altitude of 3650 meters through the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Swiss Alps as you take in the panoramic views of the mountains. You can stay overnight at the hut to enjoy the sunset from Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. (Make sure to book in advance)

Jungfrau Panorama

Panorama Jungfraujoch top of Europe

We were lucky to have a bluebird day during our visit to Jungfraujoch, but sometimes people go all the way up and are shrouded in clouds. If you happen to be at the top on a bad day, there is a 360-degree panorama display of the surrounding mountains. We didn’t spend too long here because we had the real deal in front of our very own eyes, but it is a cool film taking you to crevasses, through the clouds and overhead views of the Jungfrau Region. But you don’t have to stay overnight, the hike is only about 45 minutes one way, so you can make it out and back in about two hours.

Shops and Restaurants

Shops and restaurants at Jungfraujoch top of Europe

Going up to Jungfraujoch is an expensive excursion, so you don’t want to hurry back down once you’ve reached the top. Jungfrau Region has made sure to offer plenty of opportunities to make the most of your time at the top. Make sure to stop into Lindt Chocolate Heaven for a sample of chocolate and a chance to take home some delicious treats.

Also, like everywhere in Switzerland, you can purchase a watch if you want. I often wonder who buys a watch at the top of a mountain, but our guide Doris told me that many people buy watches here. You can even get a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife if you want.

Restaurants

Eating at Jungfraujoch top of Europe

And no attraction would be complete without a stop for a bite to eat. There are three restaurants at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Restaurant Crystal and Restaurant Aletsch offer traditional Swiss Cuisine while Restaurant Bollywood caters to those looking for some Indian food. There is also a Speedy self-serve restaurant for some dining as well. If you want to have a drink, there is a coffee bar or a cocktail bar. At the Sphinx Bar, you can enjoy a glass of bubbly as you make a toast from Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.

Hike the Eiger Trail

Hiking the Eiger Trail at Jungfraujoch

We didn’t spend too long at the restaurants or shops as we had a big afternoon ahead of us hiking the Eiger Trail. You don’t need to hike the Eiger Trail when visiting Jungfraujoch, but we highly recommend it. Rather than taking the gondola back down, take the Jungfrau Railway back to Eigergletscher (Eiger Station) and start hiking to Alpiglen. The Eiger Trail is an easy 2 hour hike that takes you along a rolling footpath that passes by the Eiger North Wall offering astounding views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Another beautiful hike in Switzerland is the 5 Lakes Hike in Zermatt.

Cows on the Eiger Trail

If you have ever wondered where those famous photos of Swiss Cows on mountains are taken, it is right here. While hiking along the Eiger Trail we came across a herd of cattle that are set free during the summer months to graze on the mountainside. The grass of the mountains is the perfect food to create delicious Swiss cheese. Along the route you’ll see beautiful flowers, waterfalls and views of the surrounding mountains. Don’t miss doing this hike!

Hot Tips for Visiting Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

Tips for visiting the Top of Europe

Top of Europe Passes can be purchased at their website here. Your pass includes unlimited trips to Jungfraujoch on the day of validity.

Check the weather before going to Jungfraujoch – The experience really depends on the weather and if you are spending that amount of money to go up to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, you are going to want to be able to see it.

Start as early as possible – Time tables change depending on the time of year, but we made sure to go up with the first gondola from Grindelwald Terminal at 8:00 am. Plus, the weather is usually better in the morning in the Jungfrau region. (don’t hold me to this, but it has been our experience)

Gondola ta the Top of Europe Grindelwald

Reserve your tickets – Make sure to reserve your tickets in advance so that you get on the first gondola and then first train. Other people had to stand in line to wait for tickets to become available.

Dress for cold weather – We saw people going up to Jungfraujoch in shorts and we knew they were going to have a horrible experience. It is cold up there. We had an outer wind layer and a warm fleece layer along with a winter hat and gloves that we could put on when we reached the top. It made for a very comfortable experience. Even the ice cave is cold, so you will want to be warm to truly enjoy it.

Hire a local guide – We had a guide with us and it was so helpful. We didn’t have to think about a thing as she led us through each step of the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe experience. Plus, she gave us insightful information and a guided history of the region. It truly was a special experience and one of our favorite days in Switzerland ever. (we’ve been to Switzerland three times!)

Where to Stay when visiting Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

We stayed at the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Grindelwald. It was a fantastic location just one stop from Grindelwald Terminal. It’s only about a 3-minute walk to Grindelwald Station and the train from Grindelwald Station to Terminal is only three minutes. Within 6 minutes we were at the gondola getting ready to make our way up the mountain. This historic hotel has a lovely outdoor patio for dining, a fantastic buffet breakfast, and fabulous views of Grindelwald-First.

So, Is Jungfraujoch worth it?

Is Jungfraujoch top of europe worth it

Yes, Definitely! We didn’t know what to expect when going up to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, but it exceeded our expectations. It was one of the most beautiful scenes we have ever laid eyes on. By going early in the morning, we stayed ahead of the crowds and had spectacular views. There is so much to do up at Jungfraujoch, we think it is definitely worth the price.

By riding the cogwheel trains, taking the gondola, going through the Ice Palace, and having the views from the Sphinx Viewing Platform and Glacier Plateau, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is definitely worth every penny. You don’t often get an experience like this without having to trek for hours and our visit to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is an experience we will cherish for years to come.

Description

When you think of Switzerland, the first thing that probably comes to mind are the snow-capped mountains and the mighty glaciers. Switzerland's uniquely beautiful mountains attract tourists and mountaineers from all over the world. This day trip from Zurich offers you the opportunity to experience one of Switzerland's most famous mountain resorts up close: the world-famous Jungfraujoch - also known as the "Top of Europe".

In the morning at 8:00 am you will board a modern bus in Zurich and be greeted by your tour guide. The coach will take you comfortably to Interlaken. During the ride, the tour guide will provide you with exciting information about the passing landscape. After a short stop in Interlaken, the journey continues to Grindelwald.

First, the ultra-modern Eiger Express cable car will take you to the Eiger Glacier station. From there you take the Jungfrau Railway up to 3500 meters above sea level to the highest station in Europe. On the way, you will make a short stop at the Eismeer station, where an impressive view of the glacier world awaits you. Through huge glass panes you experience the glacier up close

On the Jungfraujoch you won't be able to stop marveling. From there, you will have a fantastic view of the Aletsch glacier and the snow-covered mountains of the Swiss Alps.

During the next few hours, you will take part in the Alpine Sensation adventure tour. On the Sphinx viewing platform, you'll get a unique view of neighboring Italy and France. You will also be amazed by the longest glacier in Switzerland, the Aletsch Glacier. Then, in the Ice Palace, you'll get to know the inside of a glacier. So dress warmly, because up here it is frosty cold all year round.

You start the descent with the cogwheel train via Kleine Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen. In the late afternoon, the coach will take you back to Zurich from Lauterbrunnen.

Breathe in crisp mountain air from the rooftop of Europe. Switzerland tours are unforgettable for many reasons, being especially known for experiences in an environment that you can’t get anywhere else.

Here’s a summary of some noteworthy places you will want to add to your list when browsing our Switzerland tours.

Swiss Alps & Zurich

From the Matterhorn to Stanserhorn, the magnificent Swiss Alps cover 60 percent of the country. A scenic Switzerland tour will take you to Zurich, the world’s capital of banking, on the Limmat River, where you’ll walk the colorful street, Augustinergass and see carved windows of medieval merchant houses.

Lake Geneva

Visit the headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva or the home of the International Red Cross. Chillon Castle began as a Roman outpost on the other side of Lake Geneva and later belonged to Swiss nobility.

The mountain resort town St. Moritz beckons with its chic boutiques and cable cars.

Visit Ticino, where Italian is the official language, and stroll along the gentle shores of the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore. Take a delightful short on the lake boat trip while enjoying a Ticino tour to see the gorgeous Isola Bella, famous for its gardens and stunning white peacocks.

Central Switzerland & Lucerne

Central Switzerland is a great place to start your Switzerland vacation, as you can easily get to Lucerne from Zurich. Travelers on Central Switzerland tours want to explore this quaint town, see the melancholic Lion Monument, cross the covered Chapel Bridge, and take a walk nearby Pilatus. If you're looking for a snowy wonderland vacation, travelers love to take Switzerland tours in the winter to experience the magic of Lucerne's Christmas market .

Valais & Zermatt

Board the Glacier Express and continue your Swiss vacation to Zermatt, a southern resort town famous for its skiing and rock-climbing opportunities. Zermatt in the summertime offers many leisure possibilities: try swimming, hiking, or spending a whole day relaxing in the fresh Alpine surroundings. Or take a ride on Europe’s highest cable car to the snow-capped roof of the world for a magnificent panorama of the highest peaks in Switzerland, Italy, and France.

Welcome to Switzerland

Alpine adventures abound in one of the world's favorite year-round playgrounds. There is nothing better than climbing through the Alps by cogwheel train to the Jungfraujoch or the Matterhorn at "the top of Europe" as the view takes your breath away. Savor cultural delights from velvety chocolate to the gastronomic celebration of gooey cheese ready for dipping... enjoy the urban edge and charming architectural styles of Bern, and other treasured cities with unexpected nods to unique, modern aesthetics.

Visit one of the world's top-ranked cities in which to live... zurich, switzerland.

Switzerland's largest city, Zurich today is a global leader and a world capital of banking (not to mention of chocolate), and consistently ranks high among the world's cities in quality of life. But this modern metropolis on Lake Zurich has a long, rich history that stretches back some 2,000 years, and you'll enjoy experiencing some of it with Tauck – including Bahnhofstrasse, the exclusive shopping boulevard connecting Lake Zurich with the main railway station… Old Town, with its Niederdorf pedestrian area, whose winding streets are lined with shops, artisan studios, and restaurants… and a plethora of interesting architecture, fountains, squares, and churches like the Romanesque Grossmünster.

Join the "beautiful people" at the chic Alpine resort town of St. Moritz

Lovely vistas of sparkling lakes and majestic peaks greet you in the high alpine resort town St. Moritz in Switzerland's Engadine Valley. Set on the southern slopes of the Albula Alps, the town has been a popular winter sports destination for well over a century. St. Moritz has played host to the Winter Olympic Games twice – in 1928 and 1948 – and the world championships of alpine skiing in 1934, 1974, 2003 and 2017. Besides skiing, other winter sports including snowboarding, tobagganing and bobsledding are popular in St. Moritz, home to the world's last remaining natural bobsled run (built up with only snow and water, without artificial means), which opened in 1904. The resort, which enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine every year, ranks among the most famous – and glamorous – ski resort areas in the world, where celebrity spotting is almost as popular as the skiing.

Tauck Exclusive – Reception at the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace

Enjoy cocktails and more at the "top of europe" with an exclusive private reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.

As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). Here, at "the top of Europe," you'll find a restaurant, observatory, research station, a gallery of ice sculpture, and breathtaking views of the glacier-clad Bernese Alps, often called Switzerland's "jewel in the crown." And you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive... a private cocktail reception at the Ice Palace… taking time. of course, to savor the astounding views of the lofty peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch surrounding you!

Bellevue Palace Bern

More than a century of history in the shadow of the alps.

The only grand hotel in the heart of Switzerland's capital, Bellevue Palace Bern a national institution – the official guest house of the Swiss government for over 150 years, in fact. Whether you arrive for a romantic weekend, an eventful holiday or an official visit, the hotel's stylish and discreetly luxurious rooms and suites leave nothing to be desired. All offer classically elegant furnishings combined with modern-day comforts, harmonious colors and stunning views. Thanks to our hospitality, you are sure to feel at home.

Rhine Falls, Schaffhausen

Experience the largest waterfall in europe – the rhine falls, near schaffhausen in northern switzerland.

Located near the town of Schaffhausen on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland, the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe, Set on the "High Rhine," the falls are 150 meters (490 feet) wide and 23 meters (75 feet) high. They were formed during the last ice age – approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago – by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed. Travelers, artists and authors have been awed by the Rhine Falls for centuries; in the 19th century, J. M. W. Turner created several paintings of the falls, while "Frankenstein" author Mary Shelley wrote glowingly of it in her "Rambles" in the 1840s. With Tauck, you'll experience the Rhine Falls on a boat excursion from nearby Schaffhausen – with time to explore this historic town with its fine Renaissance-era buildings decorated with exterior frescoes and sculpture, and its circular 16th-century hilltop fortress, the Munot, in the center of town.

Top of Europe Pass: Jungfraujoch and More

Harder Kulm viewpoint

THE TOP OF EUROPE PASS IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE – It has been replaced by the Jungfrau Travel Pass

The Top of Europe Pass is a great idea for anyone looking to spend 3 days or more in the Jungfrau region in the Berner Oberland.

The area has so many attractions that you could easily spend a week there. And when you do, a pass like this really starts to make sense.

However, before you commit to the pass, find out what it covers (and not) and compare the prices to individual tickets you would need instead.

Table of Contents

Top of Europe Pass Prices

The price of the Top of Europe pass depends on the number of days you wish to travel and whether you have any applicable discounts.

* Discounted prices apply if you have any of the following:

  • Travel passes: Half fare card, General Abonnement (GA)
  • Seasonal Ski Passes: Jungfrau Ski Region Season Pass, Top4 Ski Pass

** Children aged 6 to 15 years can get one for 30 CHF. Children under that age may travel for free with accompanying adults.

What is included in Top of Europe pass?

Top of Europe Pass - Area of Validity

The Top of Europe Pass is valid throughout the Interlaken, Grindelwald, and Lauterbrunnen areas . This also includes one trip up the Jungfraujoch during the ticket’s validity period.

The pass includes all trains, buses, mountain railways, and cable cars excluding the Schilthorn in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

The following attractions are included in the Top of Europe Pass:

  • Jungfraujoch (one return journey)
  • Grindelwald First
  • Harder Kulm
  • Schynigge Platte
  • Kleine Scheidegg
  • Eiger Express

What is NOT included in Top of Europe pass?

Any trips outside of this region such as around the Brienz and Thun lakes or to nearby attractions and cities outside of Interlaken are not included in the Top of Europe Pass. It should be noted that the Schilthorn is not included either.

This pass is focused more specifically on Jungfrau and the nearby areas like Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen and all the transport and attractions there.

Once you head either directly east or west from Interlaken, the Top of Europe Pass will not cover anything .

Deciding If The Top of Europe Pass Worth It?

Grindelwald

Whether the Top of Europe Pass is worth it depends on how much travel you will be doing in the Interlaken, Grindelwald and Jungfrau region. However, if you go up the Jungfraujoch and also plan to visit other attractions like Grindelwald First, Männlichen, Schynigge Platte or Kleine Scheidegg, then it will definitely pay for itself and more.

You get one free trip up the Jungfraujoch, so that may be enough to make it worth your while. Such a trip costs at least 185 CHF from Interlaken Ost.

It is also helpful to see what other journeys cost so you can see whether it is worth getting this travel pass.

Return tickets without any other connecting trains or buses cost:

  • Harder Kulm – 26 CHF
  • Grindelwald First – 64 CHF
  • Schynigge Platte – 64 CHF

Trains from Interlaken Ost return cost

  • Mürren – 37.60 CHF
  • Kleine Scheidegg – 84.80 CHF

Example cost comparison

If you travel for four days around the region and visit a different attraction on each day, the costs could be as follows:

  • 269 CHF for a 4-day pass
  • 339 CHF for 4 days to Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald First, Schnigge Platte, Harder Kulm

NOTE : The 339 price above does not include all train connections you would need – eg. from Interlaken or Grindelwald. So this price is an underestimate!!!

Example 2 day visit:

If you only traveled to the Jungfraujoch and one attraction then the minimum 3 day pass might be overkill at 249 CHF. However, keep in mind that depending on where you stay and what you do on your second day it still might cover you.

Eg. Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald First costs: 64CHF + Train ride costs (22.40 CHF) = 86.40 CHF

Total minimum = 185 (Jungfraujoch) + Grindelwald First 86.40 = 271.40 CHF

Keep in mind the Jungfraujoch is more expensive in summer! 185 is the off-season price

Jungfrau Travel Pass 2024: All You Need To Know

Jungfrau travel pass vs top of europe pass.

There are many differences between the Jungfrau Travel Pass and the Top of Europe Pass. The Jungfrau Travel pass includes travel on and around the lakes of Interlaken, but only has a special price on the Jungfraujoch. The Top of Europe pass is more restricted to the mountains and provides one free trip up the Jungfraujoch.

So, although the Jungfrau Travel Pass is a little cheaper, you will have to pay extra for the Jungfraujoch.

Is The Top of Europe Pass Worth It?

If you are spending a lot of time around Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, then the Top of Europe Pass is definitely worth it. It includes not only one free trip to the Jungfraujoch but also the majority of all travel and mountain excursions in the region.

I will be staying in Interlaken [close to the west station]; so will the “Top of Europe Pass” be helpful for me , I mean to say will this pass offer unlimited train journey from Interlaken west – ost – Grindelwald – Lauterbrunnen ?

And, what about cable car rides [except the Schilthorn] ? are they free and unlimited under”Top of Europe Pass” ?

Your response would be appreciated.

From the details I have seen on the Top of Europe page on the jungfrau.ch website you can go from Interlaken Ost to almost anywhere in both Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen and above. There is a full list in the FAQ (validity section) here https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/top-of-europe-pass-winter/

My wife and I will be traveling to the Jungfrau region for 4 days in September 2023 (staying in Lauterbrunnen) as part of a 10-day trip. We planned on buying the Swiss Travel Pass and then purchasing the Top of Europe Pass with the discount. My wife just old me that, for 2023, the Top of Europe Pass will not be discounted for Swiss Travel Pass holders, only for Half Fare Pass holders. Can you confirm this for me? Thanks.

Just looked at the website (suggest you do too) and it appears that is true. (GA or Halftax discounts only) https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/top-of-europe-pass-winter/ Perhaps you can email them directly to check. Let me know what they say. I am no travel agent :>

Here is the email I received back when I contacted them directly, as you suggested. Guess I have to wait until February to see about discounts…

“Thank you very much for your email and your interest in our region. We don’t know yet the summer offers in detail, but you will find this information from mid of February at earliest. The reductions will be the same as before.”

My wife and I will be traveling to Switzerland from 4/29-5/8. With 3 days in Zermatt and 5 days in Wengen. We want to visit Jungfraujoch and many other areas in the Alps that are covered Top of Europe combined with the Swiss Half Fair Card. With limited info does this combo make the most sense?

Thanks kindly

If you are visiting a lot of the mountains and the Jungfrau while in Wengen, then yes.

My friends and I (12 of us) plan to visit the Jungfrau region between April 20 and 24, 2023. We will buy the “Top of Europe Pass Winter” (valid till April 30, 2023). We would like to visit Harder Kulm, does the Top of Europe Pass Winter cover it ?

Yes, Harder Kulm is included.

I will be in Jungfrau region between April 20 and 24, 2023. I think we will need to buy the “Top of Europe Pass Winter” (valid till April 30, 2023). I checked the area of validity, it does not seem to include Grindelwald-First (Cliff Walk). Can you verify it? Also, can I buy the regular “Top of Europe Pass” instead of the “Top of Europe Pass Winter”?

Hi Steve, Yes the First gondola is included, and the Cliff walk is right at the top. There are also winter walks and sledding around there. Just be aware its winter and potentially cold, so be prepared with the right gear/layers, beanie, sunglasses etc.

Hello! I can’t figure out how to buy top of Europe multi day pass for the end of May. Somewhere mentioned you just buy them at a train station once you’re there? Please reply if you can help guide me. Thanks so much!!!

As I understand it from another reader, they are not publishing summer prices or making them accessible til mid-Feb at the earliest, which is obviously gone by. You can try contact them via their website and see. I don’t have specific access or info. Sorry

Me and my wife plan to visit Switzerland late September and was planning to buy a 3 day top of the Europe pass .Does the pass cover Bernina Express and the Glacier Express train rides.Thank you and will appreciate your help.

Hi. I’m traveling from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen. Should I just pay for my ticket to Interlaken, and use my top of Europe pass from there to Lauterbrunnen?

Yes, your pass does not cover travel as far as Zurich, so you would need a separate ticket to the first location inside the pass region of validity.

The Top 10 Safest Countries In Europe To Visit in 2024

D reaming of a European adventure but prioritizing safety? It may be difficult to decide where to travel with so many nations to choose from. Living in or visiting a nation that is deemed “safe” is undoubtedly a luxury, but when it comes to vacations and international travel, it’s sometimes an afterthought. Planning your vacation might go more smoothly if you are aware of which nations are considered safe for visitors to visit before booking your trip. The following list compiles the top ten safest European nations to go to in 2024, along with some key safety indicators like crime rates, political stability and healthcare systems. Let’s find you the perfect European haven for your next unforgettable escapade.

Why Does Travel Safety Matter?

There’s usually a list of “must-haves” that a country has to have, regardless of whether you visit or plan to live there permanently. We are all familiar with the typical must-haves: stunning scenery, advanced infrastructure, a wide range of activities, etc. All of the aforementioned elements are important to Nomad Capitalists, but we also give top priority to things like tax breaks, a welcoming business climate, and investment opportunities.

However, safety is the one consideration that takes precedence over all others. Even if the nation became the most developed, tax-free investment destination, people would still be afraid of touching it with a rod if they felt insecure. Fortunately, Europe continues to be the world’s most tranquil continent.

The Top 10 Safest Countries In Europe to Visit

A safe environment consists of several layers. Not every safety talk touches on issues of law and order or violent crime statistics. Safety also includes general perception, healthcare and the political environment. In light of everything, the safest nations in Europe are:

Iceland has remained on top of the list of safest countries in Europe for ten years in a row. Known as “the land of fire and ice” because of its untamed terrain, it is regarded as one of the safest regions in Europe because of its persistently low crime rate, excellent standard of living and unnecessary reliance on unarmed police.

Iceland boasts robust social networks and a deep sense of community. Nearly 98% of Icelanders claim to know someone they can depend on in an emergency. One of the key benefits of living on an island with a tight-knit community is that crime rates remain low because people know one another and can support one another in situations of need. It is also the third happiest nation in the world, based on the World Happiness Report.

Even if you’re traveling alone, the nation is among the safest countries in Europe for female travelers. Schedule a visit to this secure European nation to increase your chances of seeing the fabled Northern Lights. Make a reservation for the Blue Lagoon for a tranquil activity where you may let your thoughts drift away and harmonize with the opulent surroundings.

Denmark is the second safest country in the world and Europe, and it is also the birthplace of the concept of utter contentment (Hygge). But this nation is renowned for more than just safety; it has a lot to offer visitors, whether they are traveling alone or with a big group of friends. Some of the attractions are LEGO, the Tivoli Gardens and even enjoying a nice Carlsberg beer. You’ll be departing with tales from one of Europe’s safest nations that someone like Hans Christian Anderson would be proud of.

Books, legends and a pint of Irish Guinness. The time has come to get to know  the Emerald Isle if an Irish tour isn’t the last thing on your mind. The Republic of Ireland is ranked third among the safest European nations by the GPI. It is distinct from Northern Ireland, a constituent of the Kingdom of Great Britain.

This little country takes great pleasure in its lush surroundings, its musical talents and its ability to pour the ideal pint. The nation also offers one of the lowest corporation tax rates in all of Europe. We’ve even highlighted Ireland as a great travel destination for single female travelers because of its comparatively low crime rate and low threat levels. Leave Dublin behind and immerse yourself in the fabled tales of bygone eras in other counties like Cork and Limerick; you never know what you could find. Furthermore, the Irish passport is regarded as one of the strongest five passports globally for its excellent freedom of travel.

Austria, which is renowned for its regal and ancient castles and palaces, comes in second place among the safest nations in Europe. But it’s not only architecture, either. Classical music enthusiasts can honor well-known composers like Mozart and Beethoven by swaying along in Vienna. Should your tour happen to arrive in the winter, you may enter the magical Christmas markets and experience a sensation equivalent to being within a joyous snow globe. Find out more about the best places to travel to in Europe during the winter.

Portugal, which completes the top 5 safest countries in Europe, enjoys cordial relations with its neighbors, a very low crime rate, and its armed forces. The country in southwest Europe has high levels of safety, in part because of the presence of security officials. Portugal is also safe politically, as its connections with other nations are cooperative.

In addition, the nation experiences over 300 days of sunshine on average, so visitors may be lucky to experience pleasant weather while touring. Take a tour of Portugal in the spring or summer and return feeling rejuvenated. Leave Lisbon behind and explore the city before expanding your horizons to include the other towns. Saying “yes” to a vacation in this secure European nation is the only thing left to do.

Slovenia is a country with breathtaking scenery, untamed lakes and elaborate cave networks. Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, was voted the Open City of Europe in 2016 because of its completely car-free city center, abundance of open areas and changes to the traffic laws that promote environmental health and sustainability.

But having beautiful scenery by itself doesn’t guarantee a place among the ten safest nations in Europe. Slovenia excels in several areas besides environmental safety. With almost 90% of recorded criminal charges being theft, it ranks high among the countries with the lowest levels of crime in the world. Slovenia deserves a spot on your next trip destination since it has a plethora of medieval castles, lots of recreational opportunities, and the cleanest atmospheres you’ll ever experience.

Switzerland

An excursion to Switzerland is sure to leave you craving more cheese, chocolate, and timepieces. Its long-standing neutrality has played a key role in keeping Switzerland safe, stable, and free of all bloodshed. The Swiss people are an exceptional nation because they have always lived in a tranquil environment free from instability or the threat of conflict. The nation has been able to focus on more vital issues like social welfare and growth because of the prolonged era of peace. Switzerland is now at the top of the Human Development Index.

Were you aware that Switzerland maintains one of the largest rates of gun ownership worldwide? Despite being known for being a major exporter of weapons, it has managed to keep its crime rate extremely low. That’s the extent to which the government’s gun control measures work.

The Czech Republic

Czechia, or The Czech Republic is a well-liked travel destination with a rich cultural heritage and a high level of security within Europe. There is little chance of terrorist threats, communities frequently coexist peacefully and the cost of medical services and other necessities is comparatively lower.

Finland is a deserving destination to be included in the list of the safest European countries. The country is proud to share the statistic that 11 out of 12 misplaced purses are given back to their owners. This country is a delight in every season, home to Lapland, the largest island in the world, and untamed wilderness.

Furthermore, Finland is the second-safest nation according to the Women’s Peace and Security Index, making it a safe sanctuary for lone travelers. Therefore, you can confidently pack your bags and reserve your next trip to this stunning nation if you’re a woman hoping to view the northern lights. If you like to avoid crowds, consider taking a trip in the fall, right before the holiday season.

The Republic of Croatia

Croatia ranks bottom among the ten safest European nations, surrounded by historic walls and terracotta roofs. Even when it came to the safest places to walk at night—which is frequently a top concern for women traveling alone—it came in second. Croatia is a strong candidate for any upcoming European trip plans you may have, given its Mediterranean climate.

Safe Travels!

Now that you are aware of the safest countries in Europe, pack your bags and embrace the peace of mind! Whether you crave the rugged beauty of Iceland or the charming canals of Amsterdam, Europe offers a wealth of safe and unforgettable travel experiences. Remember, this list is a jumping-off point, and further research can help tailor your choice to your specific interests.

While these countries consistently rank highly in safety, it’s important to remember that vigilance is key anywhere you travel. Staying informed about current events, researching specific destinations, and practising common sense will go a long way in ensuring a smooth and secure European adventure. With a little planning and this handy guide, your European adventure is sure to be as safe as it is spectacular.
