3 Shocking Grand Traverse Commons Tours | Traverse City Historical Tours

Looking for one of the most fun and exciting things to do in Traverse City ? A historical tour of the former Traverse City State Hospital and Village at Grand Traverse Commons tours is a must-experience when visiting the Northern Michigan area.

Grand Traverse Commons Tours | Traverse City Historical Tours Offer Glimpse Into The Past

About the Village at Grand Traverse Commons

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons is also known as the former Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane. This area is a fascinating mix of abandoned buildings, spacious park areas, winding paths, renovated shops, office spaces, condos, and restaurants.

Totaling almost a million square feet, the former hospital housing and administration buildings are considered one of the largest historic restoration and adaptive re-use projects in the United States.

Grand Traverse Commons Tours | Traverse City Historical Tours Offer Glimpse Into The Past

History of Traverse City State Hospital

The Traverse City “insane asylum” hospital operated between 1885 – 1989. During its peak, it housed 3,500 residents.

Care at the facility was very progressive for its time. It operated on the philosophy that exposure to nature, socialization opportunities, and being productive were the best treatments for mentally ill patients.

The design of the hospital buildings and grounds reflects those views. Thousands of windows allowed for natural light as well as the presence of garden areas, pathways, and open-design buildings.

After the facility closed in 1989, it sat vacant until 2000. Then, a local preservation group and design company began working together to begin renovations.

Today, the renovated areas house shops, office space, condos, wineries, restaurants, and art galleries. Plans are in the works to continue renovations on the remaining buildings over the next several years.

The former grounds also have a new lease on life and regularly host a local farmer’s market, festivals, concerts, and other community events. Miles of groomed trails offer hiking, biking, jogging, and cross-country skiing opportunities.

There are several Grand Traverse Commons tour options . The most popular tour is the Guided Historic Walking Tour .

Visitors will walk through three former asylum cottages, restored shops, and finally, through the 1885 underground steam tunnels.  This tour focuses on the history of the hospital and the ongoing preservation efforts.

The Tripod Photography Tour  allows photographers of all abilities to capture unique images of the former hospital and grounds.

This tour allows for additional time to explore attics, basements, and abandoned buildings not included on the Guided Historic Walking Tour. This tour also includes a walk through the 1885 underground steam tunnels.

Looking for a bit of spooky fun? Book the Twilight Tour and hear fascinating stories about life at the hospital while touring an abandoned ‘cottage’ by flashlight. This includes a walk through the 1885 underground steam tunnels.

The average distance for all tours is approximately one mile. Be aware that age guidelines apply for all tours. VIP/private tours are also available.

Traverse City Asylum Tour Tips

  • Be sure to wear a closed-toe, rubber-soled shoe. The tours cover a lot of ground, some of it is slippery and uneven.
  • Even during the summer, the basement/tunnel areas are chilly. Dress in light layers, such as a t-shirt and jacket. Consider wearing pants and long sleeves, to protect arms and legs in the tunnels and abandoned buildings.
  • Check the age guidelines for all tours prior to booking.
  • Use the restroom before the tour begins – there won’t be an opportunity after you leave.
  • Consider the conditions prior to booking your tour. Anyone who has difficulty walking, has a fear of smaller, enclosed spaces (tunnel areas), or is unable to climb stairs should consider these factors prior to booking.
  • Be sure to book in advance. These tours fill quickly, especially during the busy summer months.
  • Plan some extra time to visit the shops and the unique Traverse City restaurants in the Commons area. Grab a sweet treat from the Pleasanton Brick Oven Bakery  or Underground Cheesecake Company. Stop by  Spanglish  for authentic Mexican cuisine or enjoy a wine tasting at Left Foot Charley .

‘Asylum After Dark’ tours to open at Traverse City’s former psychiatric hospital

  • Updated: Sep. 16, 2020, 9:47 p.m. |
  • Published: Sep. 16, 2020, 7:51 a.m.

Village at Grand Traverse Commons

The new October tour will be focused on Cottage #30, which is still in its original state.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The dark, crisp nights of October might be just the perfect time to be led slowly through one of the old brick buildings that are part of the former Northern Michigan Asylum - and hear stories about the people who used to live and work there.

The slightly creepy Cottage #30 will be home to the new “Asylum After Dark” tours, which will begin next month in part of the historic Village at Grand Traverse Commons development. Participants will be guided through four floors - from attic to basement - and get a taste of what life was like for residents of the old state hospital and those who cared for them. Vignettes from those years will be shared during the tour. And while we can’t spill exactly what stories will be told, be sure to listen closely for a horrifying tale about a glass jar full of bats.

The tour is deliberately not being billed as a “haunted” experience to undertake during the month-long countdown to Halloween, but if you do happen to sense something otherworldly, your tour guides likely won’t tell you that you’re wrong.

“The sights, sounds … and darkness will leave you wanting to explore more,” according to the event description. “Join us for a bonfire after your experience and take home an exclusive piece of asylum history.”

The event is slated to run Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in October. It includes:

  • 30-minute guided experience – includes exclusive map and $5 off village merchandise
  • Cost is $45 per person or $80 per couple, (Ages 18 & over ID required)
  • Not wheelchair accessible

To reserve a ticket and see available dates and times, check the website here .

Village at Grand Traverse Commons

Grand Traverse Commons runs a handful of historical and architectural tours year-round , taking advantage of several different buildings - and sometimes even tunnels - on the sprawling old hospital’s grounds. The gorgeous cream-brick Victorian Italianate buildings were constructed as a state-run asylum that opened in 1885 with innovative programming. It later was named the Traverse City State Hospital, where staff cared for patients for a century before it closed in the late 1980s. Now a mixed-use development, the huge main building and its wings have been renovated into condos, apartments and a shopping district that includes restaurants, a winery and a bakery. Many of the buildings are still in their original state and can be walked through on the tours.

For some time, staff at the Commons has been looking for a historically-accurate way to create a tour for all those clamoring for an October event.

“This is based in fact, stories that we have found from people who have worked here,” said Krystal Fluette, an office manager who handles the tour planning. “There are good descriptions. It stays true to the story of the Traverse City State Hospital.”

“It’s always been something that I have been trying to move forward. We’ve had a lot of interest in people wanting to do an October tour. It’s a great year to give people what they want.”

Visit the Most Haunted Places in Boston

Boston has a unique place in American history. It’s famous for Fenway Park, legendary football, baked beans, and craft beer—the American Revolution began and was fought on these very streets. Given that storied reputation, many people fail to see the foreboding darkness that lurks at the edges of the city’s historical working-class surface.

Ghosts have been a part of Boston’s legacy since the very earliest days. Book your Boston ghost tour today to get up close and personal with the gritty stories that make Boston so famous.

Omni Parker House

The Old Granary Burial Ground is the third oldest memorial site in Boston. Here, you can see the headstones of some of the country’s most notable figures. Benjamin Franklin’s parents, Abiah and Josiah Franklin, are currently resting in Old Granary. Several people who have visited the site at night have captured images of supposedly ghostly figures roaming around. Whether it’s neighboring ghosts or Franklin’s parents, it’s an eerie view into history you won’t want to miss.

Boston Athenaeum

The Boston Athenaeum is perhaps one of the spookiest locations on our ghost tour, even if you’re a skeptic. From books made of human skin and several photos of eerie cemeteries, it’s no wonder that countless people rush to this site annually. However, the ghosts that are said to roam around the Athenaeum aren’t your typical sinister spirits. Some visitors claim to feel enlightened when they encounter specific figures, such as the ghost of Reverend Harris, whose spectral presence appears in the library. The writer Nathaniel Hawthorne even saw the Reverend once reading his own obituary.

King’s Chapel and Burying Ground

Chapels and cemeteries frequently attract visitors from other parts of the world. After all, it’s where the dead are laid to rest. The King’s Chapel and Burying Ground in Boston is no exception. The site is well-preserved and sports a Victorian-era design. People who visit the cemetery claim to see shadow figures roaming around at night. The two spirits thought to be held responsible for the hauntings are Elizabeth Pain and Joseph Tapping.

Test your bravery, and join us!

What to expect on your boston ghost tour.

For a city that played a large part in forming the American cultural identity, Boston also has a discomforting connection to the otherworldly. Boston Ghosts offers an uncompromising look at what makes Beantown such a compelling haunted location.

As the birthplace of America’s revolutionary spirit, many people have ventured to the city in the hopes of being a part of history. What they did not know, though, is that sometimes history deals in cruel ironies. The blood spilled on these streets in the name of freedom and liberty has left an indelible mark on the area – one that can still be felt today.

Sure, you can read about the tragedy and death that underlie Boston’s legendary history, but experiencing its horrifying truth in person at night will help make you feel like you are a part of the city’s strange and ghastly history. Reserve your tour today and experience the side of Boston that you won’t see in the history books.

Why You Should Book Your Boston Ghost Tour Tonight!

The Omni Parker House

Haunted by its first owner and other notable ghostly guests, the Omni Parker House is considered Boston’s most haunted location . One room in particular has caused so much trouble, terror, and grief that the hotel was eventually forced to convert it into a storage room, lest they risk another guest suffering from a grisly night’s stay in the cursed room. What could possibly drive a hotel to permanently retire an otherwise perfectly good guest room? Discover the details on the Boston Ghosts tour.

Boston Common

This seemingly placid area is the country’s oldest park. For a century of its long history, Boston Common was the site of hundreds of hangings . Not all of the victims of these executions managed to escape the park, even after death. The grim ghosts of the hanging victims are the least of your paranormal concerns in the Common. Keep your eyes open and your wits about you whenever you’re at this park… or else.

Old South Meeting House | Old City Hall

Witness the birthplace of the Boston Tea Party protest and the very American Revolution itself at the Old South Meeting House. This building is of crucially historic importance, but that’s not the only legacy the meeting house is known for. There is a particular specter that sometimes appears. It always acts as a harbinger of impending death. Or perhaps it’s no messenger of death at all, but instead directly responsible for the string of deaths that have befallen the unlucky ones who’ve encountered it. Tread very, very carefully here, and hope you don’t end up seeing this fatal spirit.

Old City Hall

This former hub of Boston’s local government has since become a bustling mixed-use commercial and office property. Because of its historical significance being covered up with the new polish of redevelopment, at least one ghost exacts its revenge for this perceived disrespect for history on visitors. The Old City Hall may be magnificent looking , but watch where you look inside…

Colonial Williamsburg

The 15 best ghost tours in the U.S. for a good scare

Feel chills from head to toe on these terrifyingly fun ghost tours in the U.S.—book if you dare!

Photograph: Courtesy Colonial Williamsburg

Every town has a past worth exploring—both pleasant and sinister. If you want to learn about a city’s dark side, consider signing up for a ghost tour. These tours mesh history, mystery, and entertainment all in one evening as guides tell tales of the supernatural, take you by  haunted sites  and often show you mysterious local cemeteries .

In New Orleans, stroll the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter while learning about the world of voodoo, haunted mansions, and even pirate legends. In San Francisco, board a ferry to Alcatraz for a gripping night tour of the former prison to hear tales of daring escapes and those who disappeared without a trace. Other choices include the eerie "Trolley of the Doomed" in Key West, a chilling Chicago bus tour, or a family-friendly tour to hear about the ghosts of Colonial Williamsburg.

All the telltale signs that summer is ending are afoot—swimsuits on sale, a twinge of autumn crispness in the air, fading suntans. But that also means one of the best holidays of the year is right around the corner: Halloween.

The tradition of Halloween traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain , which was celebrated in present-day areas of the United Kingdom and France between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice, a time of the year when days become shorter and the nights longer. Samhain was celebrated as a harvest festival, but it was also believed that the veil between this world and the next was thinnest during the holiday.

After Britannia was conquered by the Roman Empire, Celtic Samhain tradition blended with Roman and, later, Christian influences. The term “Halloween” is derived from All Saints’ Day , an autumnal holiday held to honor the saints, and was called “ Alholowmesse ” or “All-Hallows” in Middle English. The day before All-Hallows was known as “All-Hallows Eve,” which evolved over the years into Halloween. Halloween was imported to the United States by European immigrants, particularly the Irish during the 19th century, when it would take on an American spin.

There’s no better way to give yourself the creepy crawlies than to tempt the supernatural and embark on a ghost tour during spooky season. Halloween and its sister holidays (like Día de los Muertos , celebrated on November 1 to honor deceased relatives) can be found in in some way or another in nearly every European country as well as those touched by European colonization.

Here are 10 of the best ghost tours you should consider this Halloween.

Savannah, Georgia is a perfect destination for ghost hunters in the South seeking a thrill.

1. Savannah, Georgia

Tour to check out: Genteel & Bard’s Savannah Dark History & Ghost Encounter Tour Starting price: $30

Well, I do declare—this coastal Georgian city has a reputation for being one of the most ghoulishly delightful locations in the United States. In 2002, Savannah was even given the title of the most haunted city in the country by the American Institute of Parapsychology . Savannah has seen both American Revolution and Civil War battles , a yellow fever outbreak in the late 19th century followed by a devastating fire, and a long, horrifying history of slavery—all of which have contributed the city’s distinctly historic and somber atmosphere.

Though there are several types of tours you can take in the Hostess City of the South, some of the most popular ghost tours in Savannah are hosted by Genteel & Bard , a family-owned company that specializes in walking tours. Its Savannah Dark History & Ghost Encounter Tour takes guests on a journey through some of the city’s most haunted locations with a knowledgeable storyteller. The tour lasts about two hours and covers three-quarters of a mile—the guide uses a wireless microphone that will transmit audio to a small wireless receiver and a set of earbuds given to each guest. During their time with Genteel & Bard in Savannah, guests can expect to see Sorrel-Weed House, which is home to several Civil War–era specters; the Wright “hanging” square, where a Yamacraw chief’s grave was desecrated and an Irish indentured servant was later hung; and the Foley House Inn, where a skeleton was discovered in a wall in 1987.

2. Paris, France

Tour to check out: The Catacombs of Paris Starting price: $27

What would be a better way to ring in Halloween than by descending into the infamous catacombs of Paris? During the 17th century when Paris was experiencing intense population growth, the city’s cemeteries were, at some points, literally overflowing with corpses. The problem became so egregious that during heavy rains in 1780, a wall broke in the Les Innocents Cemetery causing a wave of rotting bodies to flood into a nearby property. So, citizens turned to its network of underground limestone mining tunnels that were dug during the 13th century. It took nearly 12 years to move the bones of Paris’s overflowing cemeteries into the catacombs—a total of 6 to 7 million people—and during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror , bodies were buried directly in the tunnels.

The practice of burying people in Paris’s catacombs ended in 1860; it’s estimated that there are over 200 miles of bone-ridden passageways beneath the city. It is illegal to explore the vast majority of the tunnels, but a small portion is open to the public. The best way to see them is by booking a tour with Las Catacombes de Paris , which gives access to two miles of the underground system. Though you could simply buy a ticket and explore by yourself, guided tours that dive deep into the history of the city and catacombs are also available. Unfortunately, this activity is not accessible for wheelchair users or people with mobility disabilities since entering the catacombs requires a long trip down 131 stairs.

There are 42 cemeteries in the New Orleans area—31 of them are considered to be historic.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana

Tour to check out: Haunted History Tours Starting price: $30

Along with Savannah, New Orleans has a reputation for being one of the most haunted U.S. cities. In fact, it’s been used as a spooky backdrop in several Hollywood productions like True Blood , American Horror Story: Coven , and Interview With a Vampire . There’s just something about this 300-year-old city with its French colonial–style mansions, mausoleums, and Spanish moss that feels both beautiful and unnerving, providing the perfect setting for a scary story.

New Orleans, though well-known for Mardi Gras and Southern hospitality, has a history that’s been marred by several tragic events, including the genocide and forced removal of the Indigenous population, a smattering of yellow fever outbreaks, and the city’s role as a major slave port. In fact, before the Civil War, New Orleans was seen as the epicenter of the U.S. slave trade . The Big Easy is also sometimes called the northernmost Caribbean city and there’s still a tinge of obeah or voodoo in the air.

New Orleans–based Haunted History Tours offers 10 different ways to explore the city’s dark side. Guests can pick among options like a spooky walking tour through the Garden District or a stroll through the Cities of the Dead (a local nickname for the cemeteries filled with raised mausoleums that look like little buildings) on its Cemetery Tour. Those interested in a more boozy affair could opt for the Haunted Pub Crawl , which takes guests on a quest through some of the city’s most haunted bars, where signature NOLA cocktails like sazeracs are available.

Another popular option in the city is a guided walk hosted by Unique NOLA Tours . This company has a wide docket of options to peruse through, from their naughty Lewd Spirits Tour (which combines “raunchy ghost stories” with “seedy haunted bars”) to their Pestilence, Pandemic, and Plague Tour which takes guests on a journey through the many epidemics and disease outbreaks the Big Easy has weathered over the years—if you can handle that after the past few years. They also have a Spooky Family Ghost Tour if you’re hoping to bring the kids along. Tickets starts at $37 per person.

Scotland is an ancient city—it's also teeming with spirits.

Edinburgh is an old city—it’s also teeming with spirits.

4. Edinburgh, Scotland

Tour to check out: City of the Dead’s Haunted Graveyard Tour Starting price: $16

Edinburgh has served as the capital of Scotland since 1437—it’s an old city. It also is widely considered one of the most haunted places in Europe with a history rife with witches, warlocks, ghosts, body snatchers, and other paranormal things that go bump in the night. For example, during the Salem Witch Trials, 185 people were accused of practicing witchcraft. In Scotland, an estimated 4,000–6,000 people were put on trial for being witches—the vast majority of whom were tortured and then executed. And, of course, there’s Edinburgh Castle, said to be one of the most haunted castles in Europe; it’s seen no less than 23 attacks to capture it over the years, most helmed by the English.

One of the most popular ghost tours in the city is hosted by City of the Dead , a Scottish touring company owned by Black Hart Entertainment. Its Haunted Graveyard Tour gives visitors access to Edinburgh’s Covenanter’s Prison and the Black Mausoleum, home to the Mackenzie Poltergeist , one of the most well-documented paranormal phenomena in history. City of the Dead’s tours employ both historians and entertainers, so guests are sure to have a good time while learning a thing or two.

5. Montego Bay, Jamaica

Tour to check out: Rose Hall Night Tour Starting price: $27

Though it’s better known for scenic Caribbean beaches and a busy airport, Montego Bay, Jamaica, also happens to be home to one of the most infamous ghosts on the island: the White Witch of Rose Hall. Ever since the British expelled Spanish colonists from the island in 1655, Jamaica played an important role in the Triangle Trade and the production of sugarcane and rum. Jamaica was widely regarded as one of the worst places to be an enslaved person, with many enslavers like Thomas Thistlewood treating Africans with inhuman cruelty, violence, and brutality.

One of the worst offenders on the island was said to be Annie Palmer, the mistress of Rose Hall near Montego Bay. Though much of the lore surrounding her story is fiction, the legend goes that Palmer ruled her plantation with an iron fist and murdered all three of her husbands. Afterwards, she began taking enslaved men as lovers, but when she tired of them, she would have them done away with as well. After Palmer was killed by one of her servants, she was supposedly sealed in a special voodoo-charmed casket so her spirit could never rise again. However, it’s said that the spell didn’t take and that her ghost still wanders the plantation. Her story was immortalized in the 1973 Johnny Cash song “ The Ballad of Annie Palmer .” The singer was so intrigued by the tale that he actually purchased the Cinnamon Hill Great House on the property.

The great house was restored during the 1960s and is now open to the public for tours. There are day tours available, but for the ultimate spooky experience, try attending the night tour . Though Annie Palmer’s tale might be more fiction than fact, you’ll learn about how the European bourgeoisie lived during the colonial era and the cruelty that their enslaved workforce endured.

6. Singapore

Tour to check out: Oriental Travel and Tours’ Creepy Tales of Singapore Starting price: $100

Despite being one of the safest cities on the planet, Singapore also boasts a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in Asia. With a history entangled with World War II battles and Japanese and British colonies, this city-state has seen more than its fair share of bloodshed over the years. Changi Beach, considered one of the most paranormally disturbed places in Singapore, was the site of the infamous Sook Ching Massacre . During World War II and Japanese occupation, thousands of Chinese men suspected of anti-Japanese sentiments were rounded up and executed, then buried underneath the sand. It’s said that beachgoers can still sometimes catch the sounds of men crying and screaming.

Oriental Travel and Tours’ Creepy Tales of Singapore experience takes guests to Sook Ching beach as well as a few other scary places. They include the largest Chinese-style cemetery in the world outside of China, Bukit Brown —it’s estimated to hold more than 100,000 tombs. Tours are held in English and the cost of the ticket includes transport between all the different points on the four-hour itinerary.

7. San Antonio, Texas

Tour to check out: Sisters Grimm’s Haunted History Walk Starting price: $25

One of the oldest cities in Texas, San Antonio was founded in 1718, nearly 100 years before Austin was established. It also has a reputation as the most haunted city in the Lone Star State. There’s the Black Swan Inn, which once had a hanging tree on the premises and is said to be haunted by Native American spirits as well as a young couple who met an untimely death. Then, as any San Antonian knows, there’s the railroad by Villamain and Shane roads, which is haunted by benevolent schoolchildren who (supposedly) died in a train crash in the 1930s when their bus stalled on the tracks. They’ll push any cars stuck on the tracks over to safety. And don’t forget the Alamo—the old mission is said to still be protected by ghostly apparitions of the original defenders.

Get acquainted with the supernatural side of San Antonio on a Sisters Grimm Haunted History Walk . It takes guests to famously spooky locations like the Alamo, the Spanish Governor’s Mansion, the old Bexar County Jail (now a Holiday Inn Express), and the Menger Hotel—one of the most haunted hotels in the nation; it’s supposedly occupied by Theodore Roosevelt’s ghost. If getting in your daily steps is not your thing, the Sisters Grimm also has a Ghost Bus Tour , which includes a cemetery stop.

What is a Ghost Tour? Read This Before You Go

What is a ghost tour? What should you keep in mind before taking one? Should you bring anything with you when you go?

Most importantly, will you get to meet some real restless spirits while on the tour?

In this article, we answer some common questions about ghost tours to help you have the best paranormal experience possible.

What is a Ghost Tour?

A ghost tour is an organized event which allows participants to learn more about the haunted history of a particular location.

If you are a beginner ghost hunter (who doesn’t want to get too spooky just yet) or have young children in your group, the former is going to be a better choice for you.

However, if you’re ready for a hands-on ghost hunting experience, look for a tour with a paranormal investigation component.

What to Bring on a Ghost Tour

For most tours, all you’ll need is an open mind – and, in places like San Francisco, a warm jacket.

The organizers of paranormal investigation tours will usually offer additional ghost hunting equipment.

That can include EMF meters, infrared temperature detectors, dowsing rods, and bionic listening devices.

If you’ve got some of these tools at home, you can ask the tour company if you can bring them on your tour as well.

6 Reasons to Go on a Ghost Tour

1. not all of them will scare your pants off..

Many people don’t realize that ghost tours can be incredibly versatile.

Some of these tours are actually fairly family-friendly – especially ones that focus on exploring history and lore rather than purposefully stirring up restless spirits.

If you are wondering if a particular tour is suitable for you and your group, don’t hesitate to contact the tour company and ask.

2. A new perspective on a popular destination.

A ghost tour offers an opportunity to see a popular tourist destination in a very different light.

For example, did you know that San Francisco’s City Hall is rumored haunted by at least three restless spirits?

3. A chance be a tourist in your own backyard.

You don’t have to go traveling to go on a ghost tour.

Chances are, your town or city has a few dark secrets you don’t know about.

Taking a local tour will let you experience your city in a completely different way.

(It might also scare you away from your favorite bar or park. Consider yourself warned.)

4. A wide range of choices – no matter where you are.

You don’t have to be in a large metropolis like San Francisco or New Orleans to go on a hunt for restless spirits.

You can find paranormal investigation tours in cities and towns all across the country.

Local historical societies often run these tours in small towns.

Check out their websites if you’re unsure if your town has one!

5. An insider look at the local culture.

The best haunted tours are led by experienced local guides who know the ins and outs of their city.

Their stories can give you a glimpse behind the curtain to provide unique insights into the history and culture of a particular city.

What to Expect from a Ghost Tour

Most ghost tours take place after sunset, so prepare for 1-2 hours of walking through the city after nightfall.

During the tour, you’ll visit some of the most mysterious locations in the city, as well as get a haunted history lesson of a lifetime.

Haunted tours have been known to stir up restless spirits, so you might experience strange sensations or hear inexplicable sounds during the tour.

A haunted tour that’s focused on investigating paranormal activity will provide a more immersive, hands-on experience.

Instead of simply taking a stroll through the city, you’ll learn the fundamentals of ghost hunting and explore some of the most haunted places using authentic paranormal investigation equipment.

The Haunt Experience

If you’ve been itching to go on a haunted tour, we’ve got the perfect thing for you!

Led by experienced San Francisco locals – Mary, Sebastian, and Iris – our Haunted San Francisco Ghost Tour will show you a different side of our beloved city… One that you are not likely to forget anytime soon.

I Know Why Maelor Is Missing From House Of The Dragon, And It’s Not Good News

Sutekh's fate in doctor who season 14 ending gets definitive response from showrunner rtd, the boys all but confirms butcher is a supe: season 4, episode 4 twist explained.

  • Janine & Gregory's non-official relationship in Abbott Elementary season 4 is strategic to avoid classic sitcom pitfalls.
  • The show is steering clear of the "will they, won't they" trope to maintain viewer interest in the characters' future.
  • Avoiding common sitcom struggles post-couple formation, Abbott Elementary aims to end with Janine & Gregory together for good.

Abbott Elementary is dodging a common sitcom pitfall thanks to the way they're approaching Janine and Gregory's relationship storyline in season 4. Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary has been celebrated for its humor and heart. Since its release in 2021, the show has become a smash hit and has been likened to other popular sitcoms such as The Office . Throughout its time on television, the show has raked up numerous accolades including Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. With such a large following and such great success, it's no surprise that Abbott Elementary was renewed for a fourth season .

Though not much is known about what the fourth season of Abbott Elementary has in store for audiences, season 3 ended on a bit of a cliffhanger when it came to Janine and Gregory's relationship. The two have been a hot topic, both within the show and among audiences, as the characters have had palpable chemistry since the pilot episode. Abbott Elementary has put viewers through the classic "will they, won't they" situation, with each season providing twists and turns in regards to their potential relationship. After comments from one of the actors on Abbott Elementary it seems like the show has a strong plan for how to approach these characters' relationship moving forward.

Janine & Gregory Not Being An Official Couple In Abbott Elementary Season 4 Is A Good Thing

In an interview with TV Line , Tyler James Williams (who plays Gregory at Abbott Elementary ) explained what is in store for Janine and Gregory after season 3. The season ended with a passionate kiss between the two of them and an inferred hook-up. While this season finale may have seemed like the beginning to Janine and Gregory's highly-anticipated relationship , Williams explained that he can't say that they are going to be in an official relationship. He also shared that there is not going to be any " stop-start anymore ".

Though viewers rooting for Janine and Gregory's relationship may be initially disappointed by the fact that they are not an official couple in the upcoming season, it is actually a good thing in the long run. Williams' comments indicate that Abbott Elementary is not going to take viewers on the emotional rollercoaster of Janine and Gregory breaking up and making up in order to keep the show interesting. Instead, viewers can anticipate that if Janine and Gregory do finally end up together, it will be for the long haul. So even though it will be sad to not get to see the characters being in a committed relationship for the next season, there is a sense of relief in knowing that it sets the couple up to be end-game.

Other Sitcoms Have Struggled After Their Main Couples Got Together

A lot of the time, sitcoms have to have the main couple break up and make up because of the need to keep storylines interesting. For example, New Girl had a great amount of tension surrounding the "will they, won't they" of Nick and Jess. When the two ended up becoming a couple, the show lost some of its humor and appeal. Writers then broke the couple up, which felt like an out-of-character decision and came as a frustration to audiences.

How I Met Your Mother is another example of a sitcom that struggled after the main couple finally gets together. While the show revealed the mother's identity early on, a large part of the show's humor came from Ted Mosby's quest for love. After he finally meets the mother of his children, the later seasons shifted focus to their relationship struggles and getting to know the mother, which became less engaging for viewers.

Abbott Elementary's Final Episode Should End With Janine & Gregory As A Proper Couple

It's clear that Abbott Elementary is aware of this sitcom trend and is making concerted efforts to avoid falling into it. Pushing off Janine and Gregory's beginning as a proper couple avoids the need to stir up drama by having the characters break up. Instead, they can continue to leverage the anticipation viewers have for their relationship.

While it's the right call to avoid them being together right now, Abbott Elementary should definitely have the two end up in the committed relationship they deserve. One great way to make this happen is by having the series finale be the moment the two are officially a couple. Given that Janine and Gregory have had undeniable chemistry from the very first episode of Abbott Elementary , this makes for a perfectly full circle moment and allows for the characters to be happily in love for the rest of time in viewers' minds.

Abbott Elementary

Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary is a workplace comedy/mockumentary that follows a group of passionate teachers working with - and against - a difficult principal in the Philadelphia public school system. From the bright-eyed idealists who desire to change to the battle-tested "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" classicalists, these teachers are Underfunded, outnumbered, and consistently facing new odds stacked against them daily. However, they will work together to provide the best educational experience for the children they teach. Along the way, they'll navigate their own messy personal relationships and find benefits from the younger and older generations as they try to bridge the gaps left by a less-than-stellar school system.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

the commons ghost tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

the commons ghost tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

the commons ghost tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

the commons ghost tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

the commons ghost tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Why this adorable historic Arizona town is a top summer getaway: Local hidden gems

the commons ghost tour

From overlooked roadside attractions to offbeat museums and obscure natural wonders, Local Hidden Gems will showcase some of the unique and unexpected treasures that make America extraordinary. We will emphasize charm, surprise and delight.

Local hidden gem:  Bisbee, Arizona

To travel into the past, you only have to drive a little more than 200 miles southeast of Phoenix, Arizona, to a former mining town in the Mule Mountains.

Bisbee was once the largest city in Arizona, bolstered by a thriving mining economy that produced 8 billion pounds of copper over a century. Mining ended in the 1970s; today, people can go underground in the mine that propelled the city to prosperity.

The Copper Queen Mine , which opened in 1877 and operated for nearly a century, was where miners descended into constant 47-degree temperatures to find precious metals beneath the Earth’s surface. Miners found a strain of turquoise exclusive to the area , which became known as “Bisbee Blue.”

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Today, visitors can don hard hats and headlamps and ride a small train down into the Copper Queen Mine. Guides who worked in the mine share their experiences.

Local hidden gems: A spotlight on the American treasures in our backyards

Old Bisbee’s historic downtown delights travelers with its quaint small-town ambiance, abundant in eclectic shops and art galleries housed in colorful storefronts. Don't miss the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum , a Smithsonian affiliate, filled with exhibits from when Bisbee was one of the biggest towns between St. Louis and San Francisco.

There's a handful of culinary institutions, including Patisserie Jacqui, revered for its scratch-made croissants, and fine dining emporium Café Roka ( it’s up for sale ). The smallest bar in Arizona , the Room 4 Bar, is in Bisbee.

The city’s famously steep steps inspired an annual tradition, the Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb, a race held every October that traverses 4.6 miles of the numerous staircases built into the town's hills .

People don't wait for Halloween to go ghost hunting in Bisbee. The Old Bisbee Ghost Tour is open year-round. The Copper Queen Hotel is said to be haunted .

Bisbee's charm and nostalgic appeal have made it a must-visit destination in the U.S., recently overcoming a fire that destroyed two historic buildings in February . The steps, mining history and historic downtown drew attention from Atlas Obscura, which named Bisbee alongside Mongolia; La Paz, Bolivia; Greenland; and Vanuatu as one of the five best places to visit for 2024 .

Your guide to the Celtics’ championship parade: What to know if you’re going, and how to watch if you can’t

Rafael Campos, of Salem, held a homemade trophy before the start the parade on Friday.

Follow along with live updates from the Celtics’ championship parade

Clear your schedules, and plan to take the day off on Friday for the Celtics’ NBA Championship parade.

If you’ve forgotten the procedure in the six years since the City of Boston last hosted a championship parade, here’s a refresher: As many as 25 duck boats will begin their slow roll through the streets of Boston Friday at 11 a.m., starting in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street and ending on Boylston Street near the Hynes Convention Center.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly Friday after a sweltering week in Boston , but it’s still going to be a hot one, so Mayor Michelle Wu reminded fans to stay hydrated.

The celebrations began Monday night after Boston blew out the Dallas Mavericks, 106-88, in Game 5 at TD Garden to win their NBA-record 18th title.

Read on for everything you need to before Friday, including the route, road closures, safety information, and more.

After returning from a trip to Miami, the Celtics will board the duck boats and travel through the city.

Celtics parade in Boston: What you need to know

  • Date and time: Friday, June 21 beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Location: The parade route will run from in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street, past City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common on Tremont Street, and end on Boylston Street by the Hynes Convention Center.
  • Events: The Celtics players and staff will not give speeches along the parade route. Instead, they’ll host a pre-parade event at TD Garden before getting on the duck boats.
  • Forecast: The temperature is expected to be in the mid-80s. Keep up with the latest forecast here .
  • Getting there: Wu urged residents to take public transit on Friday as the MBTA will be increasing service on all transit lines. Parking on certain streets in the West End, Downtown, and Back Bay will be closed just after midnight on Friday morning, Wu said.
  • Road closures: Streets along the parade route will be shut down to traffic starting at 9 a.m. Friday morning, Wu said. A list of closed street is available on the city’s website .

When is the Celtics parade?

The duck boats will depart from TD Garden Friday at 11 a.m. — the usual start time for the dozen other parades Boston Duck Tours has held between February of 2002 and February 2019 for the Patriots (six), Red Sox (four), Bruins (one), and Celtics (one).

Ed Davis, the former Boston Police Commissioner in the middle of the Title Town parade run that included the Celtics’ 2008 rolling rally, said that a morning start is a hedge against adult-beverage-fueled unruliness.

“From a police perspective, having something in the morning, it’s less likely to have violence associated with it because of alcohol consumption and things like that, so it just makes it a safer time,” said Davis.

Insider tip: Stake out your spot early. It’s best to get there a few hours before the parade begins if you want to get close to the action.

What is the route for the Celtics parade?

The parade will run from in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street, following Staniford Street to Cambridge Street, which turns into Tremont Street, and then along Boylston Street until the duck boats reach the Hynes Convention Center.

Here’s the full route:

What’s the weather forecast for the Celtics parade?

According to Globe meteorologist Ken Mahan, this week’s heat wave is expected to lift just in time for Friday’s victory parade. The forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid-80s and a heat index — how it actually feels outside — of 87. The humidity, however, may be high, making it feel extra warm and muggy.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, and pack your sunscreen if you’re planning to camp out along the route.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management will have misting tents ats City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common to help fans cool off.

Check out the full forecast here.

Celtics parade rules and safety information

The celebrations on Monday night were relatively tame, as police arrested eight people, mostly for disorderly conduct. Boston police commissioner Michael Cox said there were no other major security or safety issues reported, which he hopes will be the case Friday as well.

“For the most part it was a good crowd,” Cox told the Globe Tuesday. “It’s always a little much when you have that many people, sometimes not everyone listens, but for the most part all our fans did well last night, hopefully they’ll continue to do well going into this. . . . We just want people to celebrate responsibly.”

Mayor Michelle Wu said Tuesday that fans should expect a heavy presence of police — including both uniformed and plainclothes officers — and first responders outside TD Garden and along the route.

“We are also encouraging everyone to celebrate safely, and look out for each other,” Wu said. “Although the weather will cool off slightly by Friday, this is our first heat wave of the year, and we are expecting temperatures in the mid- to high-nineties through Thursday.”

Cox reminded residents “there is no public drinking or use of marijuana on the route in any way.” He also said there should be no climbing or standing on mailboxes, bus vestibules, rooftops, or light polls. If fans do not get down from those areas when asked by police, they could be arrested, he said.

“Any disruptive behavior, fighting, things of that nature, will not be tolerated,” Cox said. “Let’s remember that this is a family-friendly event and we expect everybody to act accordingly.”

Prohibited items at the parade include alcoholic beverages; large bags, coolers, or glass containers; drones; weapons (or replicas of weapons); and fireworks.

During the Celtics’ 2008 parade, police made more than 20 arrests for a variety of reasons, ranging from disorderly conduct to assault and battery.

Road closures and T service during the Celtics parade

Streets along the parade route will be closed starting at 9 a.m. Parking will also be heavily restricted in the areas surrounding the parade route starting just after midnight on Friday. For a full list of street that will be shutdowns and parking restrictions, visit the city’s website.

Wu urged fans to use public transportation to get downtown. The MBTA will provide increased service and modified Commuter Rail schedules to accommodate the anticipated large crowds. For more information, visit the MBTA’s website.

How can you watch the Celtics parade at home?

If you can’t make it downtown for the parade but don’t want to miss out on the fun, you can watch the festivities on NBA TV and the NBA App.

NBC Sports Boston and NBC10 Boston will have live, all-day coverage of the celebrations beginning at 5 a.m. and running through the end of the festivities. Brian Scalabrine will host the coverage and will be joined by analysts, reporters, current and former players, and other special guests.

How many duck boats are involved?

Cindy Brown, CEO of Boston Duck Tours, said Friday that the company is expecting to deploy anywhere from the high teens to 25 vehicles to transport Celtics players, coaches, staffers, and assorted Green legends through throngs of fans along the route.

The company will run a full schedule-through the day before, and then spend the evening and overnight preparing the duck boats for a parade. That includes taking out the seats on the top deck and installing a platform high enough for the celebrants to be seen over the railing as the convoy slowly moves past the throngs of spectators.

Boston Duck Tours doesn’t get paid for the use of its boats and it doesn’t pay the city or the team to use its boats. The company will have to cancel pre-booked tours on the day of the parade and swallow a day’s worth of revenue that is “far into six figures,” said Brown.

“Obviously the marketing opportunity and the pure joy for our staff to be involved in something so important to the city is worth it,” said Brown.

Michael Silverman contributed to reporting.
